What's In Your Pack? - John Challinor

So we're in a collection of talks called Just

Camping, and we've been rallying around 2 Corinthians

2 Corinthians 5 · chapter mention

chapter 5. If you've been here each week, you

know, you're familiar with this verse, verse

1. For we know that if the earthly tent we live

in is destroyed, we have a building from God,

an eternal house in heaven, not built by human

hands. And kind of what we've said along the

way with this is that Your body, your life is

like a tent is what Paul compares it to. That

there will be a point when you lay down the tent,

you lay down the physical body. And he's saying

that when that happens, when you take your last

breath here, what you can expect is there is

an upgrade waiting for you. That what is coming

is better than what's here. And so what we know

is that what we've kind of rallied behind is

this life is temporary. You are just camping.

He compares it to a tent that this life is just

a camping trip. And you are living in something

that is going to wear out. There's something

that is going to be laid down at some point.

And when that happens, you have an upgrade coming.

And then in between. verse 1, and where we're

going to pick up in verse 6, he talks about specifically

this idea that the Holy Spirit has been given

to you as a guarantee so that you can bank on,

you can know, as a believer, I can count on these

things. And so verse 6 says, therefore, we are

always confident. Why are we confident? Because

of what came before, that we have an upgrade

waiting. Right, that we have the Holy Spirit

as a deposit, a guarantee that death has been

swallowed up by life. Therefore, we are always

confident and know that as long as we are at

home in the body, we are away from the Lord.

For we live by faith, not by sight. For we are

confident, I say, and we prefer to be away from

the body and at home with the Lord. So we make

it our goal to please him, whether we are at

home in the body or away from it. For we must

all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,

so that each of us may receive what is due for

the things done while in the body, whether good

or bad. So he says, to be absent from this body

is to be present with the Lord. And it's seamless.

What he's talking about, and the reason he can

say this, is because in the person of Jesus,

you have eternal life now. Eternal life doesn't

start when you get there. Eternal life has already

begun. And because eternal life has begun, when

you take your last breath here, when the shell

lays empty, you are seamlessly in a nanosecond

in the presence of Jesus. That's true of you

today as a believer. And then he goes on to state

in between kind of what the goal is. And then

he goes in the last verse there. He talks specifically

about this idea that we will all, we will all

stay in judgment as believers. Now we talked

last week, we have boards up here. If you didn't

see it, you have to go back and watch it. Not

because I gave the talk, but because what you

heard is from the scriptures. And what it does

is lays a foundation for your entire life. Like

this is a foundation for you as a believer. This

is why you can live the way you live is because

we know that we know that we know. That there

is a day coming where we will pass away from

this earth, we'll be present with God. There

is a day coming when we will have glorified bodies.

There is a day coming when you will stand before

the throne of God. Every single person on the

planet, no one excluded, will stand. And in fact,

this week, I had the privilege, we made a last

minute trip to go to a church service in LA.

And wouldn't you know it, in the church service,

there's an... A -list celebrity that comes in

and sits 20 feet from us. And it was a reminder

to me of what's coming because he was just there

to worship. He was just there to be a part of

the family. It was a reminder that whether you're

an A -list celeb or you think you're unknown

to your mama, right? Like whatever that bridge

is, you are going to stand before the throne

of God. And what's beautiful is this, that as

followers of Jesus on that day, because the judgment

from the great white throne of God is that there

will be those that are thrown into hell. And

there are those whose name will be in the book

of life. On that day, we will realize how important

Jesus is. On that day, we will realize how good

grace is. That with everything you've done, he

goes, your name is in the book of life. It then

says that as believers, because the great white

throne, that judgment's not for you if you are

in Christ. It says that you will stand, you will

step up, you will appear in the behemoth seat.

You will step up and you will be given an account.

It will be made clear what you did with your

life. Here's what matters, church. Your life

matters. This camping trip matters for all of

eternity. This camping trip is so important that

there will be a day when you step up before Jesus

himself and give an account of what you have

done with what he gave. It matters. I don't want

you to get to the point where you get to this

day and you step up and you're like, I never

knew. Because you can do nothing about it at

that point. But while you have breath in your

body, you can praise the Lord today. While you

have breath in your body, you can do something

about it today. While you have breath in your

body, you can determine how this camping trip

plays out. And it says over in 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians 3 · chapter mention

chapter 3, we read this last week. Verse 12,

if anyone builds on this foundation using gold,

silver, or costly stones, right? So what he's

getting at is in this life, you can build with

things that last. You can build with things that

are eternal. You have in your possession right

now as a follower of Jesus the resources you

need to build for eternity. And that's not determined

on if you had more money than the person next

to you. That's not determined. None of that is

determined, right? What he's getting at is that

you have, you can build with that, or you can

build with wood, hay, or straw. Their work, believers'

work will be shown for what it is because the

day will bring to light, will bring it to light.

It will be revealed with fire. That picture of

Jesus, his eyes are fire. His eyes are gonna

look through you. There's nothing that's gonna

be hidden. And fire has this idea of purifying,

right? Of burning off. And so it will test, the

fire will test the quality of each person's work.

It will test. The motives that you did it with.

Because here's what I know, right? I don't know

if you're like this. Is that how I am? I can

smile at you and you can think, man, he really

is engaged. He really likes. I can be thinking

about what I'm having for lunch. Right? I can

listen to what you're doing and I can applaud

you in person and in my mind be going, wow, that's

the stupidest thing I ever heard of anybody doing.

Right? My motive will be shown when I stand before

Jesus. As believers, what are we building? Do

we really believe that God is going to check

the heart? Because that's what it's getting at,

right? Like what are you building with? Because

you can be doing all the right things and have

the wrong heart. And what he says is it's going

to burn. It's going to disappear. And you will

suffer loss. But notice what he also says, verse

14. If what has been built survives, the builder

will receive a reward. Isn't it crazy? Like,

think about it for a second. Just play for a

second, okay? You guys, I'm sure you still like

to play, so we'll just play. Think about the

story of God for a second, right? Think about

how crazy it is that while you weren't even...

On the planet yet, Jesus goes, I'm going to show

up for them in 2026. And then he shows up. He

takes on your sin, right? Puts it in a tomb to

set you free, to give you life. So now you have

life. You get to live this life the way he intended,

back to the original purpose, right? So now you

get life. And in getting life, He goes, hey,

guess what? I'm going to give you some gifts

too. And you go, okay, God. So you gave me life.

You gave me gifts. I use this life. I use these

gifts. I use this camping trip, right, for you.

And then guess what he says? When you get to

eternity, I'll reward you. Huh? You gave it all

to me and you're still going to give me a reward.

Like what? That's how good your God is. That's

how good he is. You didn't do any of it. You're

just like, I just. I'm just down here living.

I'm just camping. And he goes, it matters for

eternity. It matters for eternity. So where are

we going today? Because that's your recap. So

what does this mean for today? Well, have you

ever heard of Ryan Trahan, anybody? Nobody's

heard of Ryan Trahan? Oh boy, this is going to

be long. Okay, can we do something? I don't know

what we did with timers, but can you figure it

out? We're going to take a little longer than

I have. Okay, so Ryan Trahan. Let me try and

catch this up because this is going to be a long

conversation because you don't know who Ryan

is. Okay? Ryan's a YouTuber. There you go. You

got the whole thing. That's all you need to know.

So Ryan's a YouTuber, right? And he does these

different types of things. And one of them is

called the Penny Series. And my family and I,

we're in the middle of watching the Penny Series

right now. And what it is is this, that Ryan

decided he's going to take a penny. And he's

going to go from West Coast to East Coast and

give the penny to a fellow YouTuber on the other

side of the country. But here's the catch. He

starts with a penny. So how is he going to get

in 30 days from the West Coast to the East Coast?

That's kind of the, ooh, how's he going to do

this type thing, right? So you have him start

out and he's in California and he's got a penny

in his hand and he trades the penny and then

he sells what he traded and then he's got just

enough to buy a pack of water. And he walks around

selling water, right? And as he sells water,

he changes to soda. Then he realizes people in

California don't drink soda, right? And so they

only drink water. So he goes back to water and

keeps selling water. And then he buys something.

He buys something. He buys a hammock because

he needs somewhere to sleep, right? And so now

he strings the hammock up between two trees in

a nice neighborhood. And he's just camping. And

the next day he gets up and he's on purpose and

he does what he needs to and he has all these

different ways to make money, begins to make

money that day. And his goal is he wants to buy

a plane ticket to the next city. And he's just

going to work his way across the country. Now,

here's what's interesting. Here's what's interesting.

His purpose really is not to take a penny from

here to there. It's just an opportunity. Because

his purpose that is driving him is that he is

raising money to feed America. And his goal was

100 ,000. In the episode we just got to, he's

over a million raised. But because of his purpose,

it determines how he camps. Because of his purpose,

it determines how he spends his money. Because

of his purpose, it determines how he spends his

day. Because of his purpose, it determines what

he does with the people that he meets. Your purpose

determines your camping trip. Your purpose of

this camping trip changes everything. Your camping

trip is determined by the purpose you hold. 2

Corinthians chapter five, verse nine. We already

read this. So we, we, we, the body of Christ,

those that have said yes to Jesus, we make it.

Our, what's that next word? Goal. You know what

goal is? Purpose. You know what goal is? Your

highest ambition. That's what the original language

is getting at. It actually is this love honor,

right? Like your highest ambition. This is your

one thing. So what is your one thing in this

life? Your one thing is to please him. is to

please him. I lost my place. Hang on. We'll get

there. So we make it a goal to please him whether

we are at home in the body or away from it. So

we make it our goal to please him whether we

are in this body still or we're away from this

body. The goal's not gonna change because you're

a follower of Jesus. What is the goal? The goal

is that you would please him. Now this is weird

because when you go, okay, we're gonna please

him? Like what is he, like an emotional rollercoaster

based on how I live my day? No, God is not an

emotional rollercoaster based on your day. That

word pleased is that your life can delight him.

It can delight him. It can honor him. So we make

it our goal, the whole purpose of the whole camping

trip. Some of you came in going, I don't know

why I'm here. I just told you. This is why you're

on planet Earth. This is why you're in the body

you're in. This is why you're on the camping

trip you're on with the stuff that you have in

your life. This is why you are on this camping

trip. To delight, have God delight in you. It's

possible that the creator of the universe can

delight in you today. That's wild. That doesn't

make sense. That the creator God can delight

in my day today. I'm not just drinking coffee

no more. Think about it for a second. Think about

it. Everything in your life has been given for

the purpose of accomplishing your goal. Which

means everything on your camping trip, right?

Because when you go camping, what do you do?

You take a... It's not a trick question. I've

been wearing it a little while. Pack. You wear

a pack. Right? Because you're taking stuff with

you to accomplish your goal. Okay. So I got some

stuff for you. Ready? There's a guy. There's

a guy who he has worked at the church. He's a

friend. He's more like a member of the church

family. His name is Jaron. He's a drummer. You've

probably seen him drumming. He drummed at Easter.

He drummed for our winter camp this year. Jaron's

a phenomenal guy. What you need to know about

Jaron is this. He loves to ride a bike, right?

And so what Jaron does is Jaron, he was here

at the time and out of nowhere, he goes, or probably

not out of nowhere to him, but out of nowhere

to like me catching up with the story. He goes,

I'm gonna ride to San Diego on your bike. And

he's like, yeah. So what was sweet about it is

this, that when you are going to go, and it's

called ride packing, apparently. I didn't know

that. But when you're going ride packing, guess

what Jaron doesn't have? This guy. In fact, his

bike looks something like this. I think we have

a picture of it. Okay. We almost had a picture.

So on the front, on the front, there we go, on

the front is his tent. See that little thing

under his handlebars? That's his tent. And then

he's got a backpack. And in his backpack, he's

got just the essentials that he needs. He doesn't

have a pad for the floor. He doesn't have a lot

of things that you would take. He just has a

simple backpack. Because the goal of the ride,

what's the purpose of what he's doing? I don't

think that's going to stay up, so we'll just

let it fall. That's fine. What's the purpose

of what he's doing? To get there. How far, how

far can I get and how fast, right? Well, then,

just so we're clear of what it looks like, because

he's carrying such minimal stuff, this is what

it looks like when Jaron is camping on one of

those, on that trip to San Diego. That tent is

just big enough for him. That tent just covers

him. Why? Because the purpose determines what

you have in your pack. Right? And so here's what's

interesting. There's different types. And Toby,

those of you who know Toby, we can give it up

for Toby. He's part of our production team. He's

amazing. But Toby, he was explaining this to

me. You know what this is? This is an ultralight

pack. It's so light, everything that you make,

everything that you bring is light. In fact,

everything that's in there, for the most part,

is in here. Right. And so what happens, what

happens with the ultralight is it's designed

for we're out and we're just walking and we're

going to camp and we're going to walk again and

we're going to camp and we're going to walk again

and we're going to camp. So it's designed for

being on a journey. It's designed for making

distance in that journey. It's designed for reaching

the purpose that you have. But it's also not

cumbersome and it's also not designed like this

one. Why? Because what you have in your pack.

is determined by what? Your goal. I wonder what's

in your life today that's a part of your pack

of this camping trip that has nothing to do with

the purpose that God has for you. I wonder how

many of you need to clean up your pack today,

right? And that's not even the point. That's

just a freebie. So there you go. And so what's

amazing, what's amazing is you have... You have,

depending on the purpose, you have what you put

in your pack. God has put things in your pack

for this camping trip. How amazing, how amazing

that God not only saved you, but he gave you

things that would help you delight, delight him.

That as you delight in the things he has given,

he is delighted in you. That's pretty crazy.

I didn't think about it a second, right? It says

here, right, we make it our goal to have him

delight, which means that it's real simple, you

guys. This Christian life, we made it way too

hard. It's real simple. You know what it means?

It means when you wake up, you go, God, how can

I delight you today? It means that when you walk

into differences, God, how can I delight you

today? God, how can I delight you today? God,

how can I delight you today? In this, whatever

this happens to be. I mean, think about it. Think

about relationships for a second, right? Like,

God, how can I delight you in my relationships

today? God, how can you be seen? Because what

I know from scripture is this person's supposed

to see you in me. And you're delighted when I

make a representation of you. And I don't mean

like you sit there and preach the gospel. I mean,

you just be you because God made you to be you

and you love them the way God has loved you and

God delights. But to wake up and go, God, in

this relationship, how do you want to delight?

How do I put him first? God, how do I make this

the goal? See, we as Christians, we want to sit

and have an individual faith. We want to sit

with God. And I'm not knocking this in the sense

of, I do think it's good for your soul. You get

in the Bible for yourself, it's the best thing

you can do. But you're in the Bible for yourself,

you're with God. And here's the thing. Here's

the thing. I can have my quiet time and treat

people terribly, and God is not delighting. You

can sing your worship songs on the way to work.

Hallelujah. This pack's getting heavy. You can

do all those things. But if you treat people

terribly, it doesn't matter. We get so messed

up in our Christianity that we think, okay, I

got relationships on the pack. They're all here

to serve me. No, they're not. You're here to

delight God. If you're going to delight God,

those relationships aren't going to serve you.

You're going to serve them. Aha, I agree. It

should be that simple. It should be that simple.

Let's take another one, family. What a gift that's

been placed into your hands. What a gift that

God would honor you and go, hey, I've put you

into a family. And then your job is to wake up

and go, God, how do I honor you with my family

today? God, how do I raise my kids? I'm going

to be honest with you, raising kids sucks. It's

hard work. It's tiring. Oh, there's a lot of

joy. But can I just be honest, like just for

me? I can take raising kids at times and it not

be delighting to God because I haven't even thought

of him or haven't even walked with him or couldn't

really tell you what he thinks about how I'm

raising my kids. I'm just out here making what's

easiest for my life. Some of you, some of you,

here's the problem, right? So when you go, if

you ever go camping, how weird would it be? How

weird would it be if, actually in this bag, And

I probably don't need to get it out. Actually,

now that I'm doing this, it's probably not something

I need to do. See this guy? This guy actually

belongs in here. You know why? It's ultra light,

right? This thing is so light, it's like a Frisbee.

I can throw it to you. You don't believe me?

It has a purpose. You know what its purpose is?

There's a little camp stove put on top of the

camp stove. Cook some beans. It's kind of shallow

for beans, but we'll cook beans. If we're men,

we're cooking meat. So some kind of meat is going

in here, okay? Just so we're clear. You know

what's crazy? This isn't the purpose of the camping

trip, agreed? Some of you made your kids your

purpose of your camping trip. They're not your

purpose. Your purpose is to delight God, not

your kids. Some of you got grandkids, and you

made your grandkids your world. Your purpose

isn't your grandkids. That's like taking this

and going, you know what? This is what the whole

trip is about. It's not. I'm going to say something.

I don't know if it's controversial or not. I

don't really care. Some of you men in the room,

in your relationships, I have a question for

you. It goes to men and women, but especially

men. Are you safe? Are you safe? And what I mean

by safe is you're there to delight God. So there's

no ulterior motive to what may happen between

you and me or where this is going or letting

my thoughts go to where they shouldn't. Like,

are you safe? That if somebody comes to you and

they're broken, that you'll actually be a safe

place for them. You won't be a place that's looking

to do something that's not God honoring, but

you're actually, they can delight because they

know you're delighting in God and you're safe

for them to come to. Women, are you the same

way? Or are you talking to that gentleman because

you're kind of, back of your head, who knows

what could, like you guys, you guys, this is

nuts and bolts ground floor, right? Like we were

given by God relationships, but in your relationships,

honor God. Are you safe? Let's talk about, should

we pick? Let's talk about money. Money is a good

topic. God, I want to delight you. Well, then,

if you want to delight God, then you're already

asking the right question, right? Because what

you're saying is, God, it's all yours. What do

you want to do with it? You just put it in my

hands, and what he's trying to figure out is,

can he get it through you to the next person?

Why? Because here's the thing. This all comes

full circle. You're on a camping trip, and the

camping trip is about people, so he's going to

use what he puts in your hands for what? The

purpose of people. Whether it be your family,

whether it be the relationships, whether it be

he's going to use what is in your hand to build

his kingdom and his kingdom is about people.

And so what happens is, God, you put money in

my hand. And so how do I delight you in how I

use my money, God? I will talk about this one.

Sex. Right? God, how do I delight you in my sex

life? I can tell you how it's not looking at

porn. Porn is toxic for your soul. And you may

go, John, I'm not an addict. Okay. But it's the

thing you keep going back to. So that kind of

sounds like addiction. Just going to put that

out there. It's the thing that you go back to

for your dopamine hit. Some of you, you need

to understand that sex was designed in a specific

way by God. That leads me to the next one, right?

Your marriage. How do I delight God in my marriage?

Well, you're not going to delight God in your

marriage if your marriage is all about you. Your

marriage is supposed to be about the other person.

There's a context for marriage. There's a context

for sex when it comes to Scripture. The marriage

according to Scripture. is between a biological

male and a biological female. That is the marriage

structure that God has created. And if you get

outside of that, it does not work because it

was never intended to be outside of that. And

then you go to sex. Where does sex belong? Inside

of the marriage structure. So if you are participating

in sex outside of marriage, I'm just here to

tell you, you can't wake up and go, God, how

do I delight you with my sex life and be outside

of God's design, which is inside of marriage,

which is between a biological male and a biological

female. I need you to hear me. If you disagree

with me, it's okay. It's okay. I'm just telling

you what the book says. I'm just telling you

what God's design is. I'm just telling you what

he laid out. But you are welcome here. We love

you. And this does not change any of that. But

it does change how you wake up and go, God, how

do I delight you? How do you like God with your

time? Let's go to 1 Peter, 2 Peter, chapter 3,

2 Peter 3:8

verse 8. But do not forget this one thing, dear

friends. Speaking of time, with the Lord, a day

is like a thousand years and a thousand years

are like a day. Can we just go, man, our timeframe

does not work with God, right? The Lord is not

slow. What he's getting at is that the life is

like a mist, right? Like think of James. James

got that water bottle. Man, it is hot. Do we

have the AC on? The water bottle and the mist,

you squirt it and the mist goes out and then

it disappears like a vapor. That's your life.

That's your life. That's the picture he's giving.

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promises.

Some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient

with you. Not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone

come to repentance. He is patient. He is not

in a rush. He is holding off. Why? Because he

doesn't want anyone. He doesn't want, listen

to this. He doesn't want anyone. If we really

believe this story, he doesn't want one single

person on the planet today to be thrown into

the lake of fire. At the great white judgment.

But he is patient. And if you're here and you

don't know Jesus, then I just need to tell you,

he is waiting for you. He's waiting for you today.

He's patient. But the day of the Lord will come

like a thief. The heavens will disappear with

a roar. The elements will be destroyed by fire.

Fire is purifying, right? Like everything done

will be laid to bear. Since everything will be

destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought

you to be? Wait, wait, wait, wait. Because all

of this is true, because this whole story we've

been inside of, because all of this matters,

because we have a purpose to this camping trip,

what kind of people should we be? What should

we be? You ought to live holy and godly lives.

That means the godly piece, you should live according

to what God has called us to. What God has made

us to be like, the holy is set apart, that you

don't just jump in the stream, right? Like whatever

stream is flowing culturally, whatever stream

is flowing from the news feeds, whatever stream

is flowing from pop culture, whatever stream

is flowing from whatever. You don't just jump

in those. But you are separate. Why are you separate?

Because today your camping trip can what? Delight

God. That's what it's all about. I don't know

how you feel, but I hear this and I go, John,

it's way easier to say those words than it is

to live those words. And it can kind of feel

cumbersome and heavy on this camping trip. There's

a verse in Matthew chapter 28, or chapter 11,

Matthew 28 · chapter mention

verse 28. And it goes something like this. I

don't have it. There we go. Perfect. Thank you.

Are you tired, worn out, burned out on religion?

And that kind of seems like the camping trip

like this, right? Are you tired? And interesting,

the religion there is me trying to. like trying

to get something from God. I'm doing these things.

There's all these things I gotta do. And I'm

trying to do them because I'm trying to gain

a better standing. I'm trying to gain something.

I'm trying to get God to look my way. Can I tell

you that God looks at you like I look at my grandson,

right? With the biggest smile. Come to me. Get

away with me. And you'll recover what? Your life.

the purpose you were rescued. I'll show you how

to take a real rest. Walk with me, work with

me, watch how I do it. Walk with Jesus, work

with Jesus, and watch how who does it? He doesn't.

Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. Isn't that

beautiful? I won't lay anything heavy or ill

-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll

learn to live freely and lightly. This one has

everything in it. All the same parts. The difference

with this one, it's not heavy. If I can figure

it out. I think this is what this life is supposed

to be like. I think we got a bunch of people

walking around with this. And you're worn out.

You're like, I don't know if I can do this anymore.

And you're not supposed to. That's the point.

Come to me, Jesus says. And I'll show you how

to take a real rest. You know what happens when

you rest? You have space. We talked about this

in our teaching prep this week. You have space

to ask the question. And what is the question?

How do I delight you in this today? Walk with

me, Jesus says. What a gift of grace that we

get to walk with Jesus today in this life, on

this camping trip. He's your hiking buddy. Work

with me. Watch how I do it. Team, you can come

on up. We're just going to go straight in. It's

time to party. Learn the unforced rhythms of

grace. Why? Because your God is not laying anything

on you that he is not going to do, that he will

do through you. He's the only one. He's going

to do it through you. He's not going to put anything

on you he can't get through you. You know what's

amazing? You know what's amazing? Is what does

he say? Walk with me. It's a new day. How do

I delight? How do I delight you today? Even in

that. Work with me. You know what's beautiful?

You go to the story of scripture. What are we

called to be? We are called originally to be

coworkers with God. What do we have in Jesus?

We have Jesus who is coworking with us. He goes,

work with me. But then guess what? That spirit

that I gave you is a guarantee of your deposit,

which means you can count on everything in this

story to be true. That Holy Spirit, I'm going

to do it through you. I'm going to do it through

you. How am I going to affect your relationships?

How am I going to affect your camp trip? How

am I going to affect your purpose? I'm going

to do it through you if you'll walk with me and

work with me and watch how I do it. Why? Because

his burden is light. And that's good news for

this camping trip. So here's what I need you

to do. I need you to stand where you are because

we are going to party. We are going to praise.

But here's, hang on, hang on. I got to get you

ready, okay? Because it is by grace that you

have eternal life today. It's by the grace of

God. You did not deserve Jesus. He showed up

for you. It is by grace. That we have an upgrade

when we pass on from this life. We have an upgrade

waiting. It is by grace that when you pass away,

that you are absent here and present with him.

It is by grace and grace alone that when you

get to the great white throne, you can say, Jesus.

It is by grace that your name is in the book
