Worship in the Valley | Todd Jones

Well, good morning, church. Good to see you guys

this morning. I want to welcome those of you

online that are hanging out with us today. So

cool. I heard there's an entire family that's

having like a family reunion type thing. They're

all watching together. So welcome to you guys

for that. And man, it has been a while since

I have been up here to teach you guys. And we

just finished up last week a collection. It was

called Know Your Limits. And as we were starting

this collection and Pastor John was... pondering

it. He came to me about teaching that. And I

did something that I've only done twice in my

ministry career. The first time I did it was

when I was working at a church and I'd only been

in ministry for about a year and a half at this

time. And the pastor comes to me and he says,

hey, would you preach on a Sunday morning? And

I said, awesome. Yeah. And he goes, the topic

is marriage. And I'd only been married for two

years. And I was like, I will absolutely not

preach that. I don't even know if I like her

yet. Like I'm not. And I'm fairly certain she

doesn't like me, okay? So I definitely need to

learn this and not teach this. And so when Pastor

John came to me about a series about knowing

our limits and about resting, I was like, listen,

I haven't rested since the third grade, bro.

Like, I'm not your guy. I need to learn this

before I can teach this. And so it's been a while

since I've been up here with you guys. It's great

to be able to have this conversation with you

this morning. But I have to be honest, I'm up

here with a little bit of a heavy heart today.

The last time I spoke was Easter Sunday, and

my parents were here. And my parents were able

to join us and be here for the service. And then

at the 930 service, we got them a room where

they just prayed for the whole service. They

prayed for you guys. They prayed for our pastors.

They prayed for the church. Just an incredible

time. Nine days later, I got a phone call that

rocked my world. It was 7 .30 in the morning,

which my mom doesn't usually call at that time,

but she was calling to let me know that my dad

was on life support. And it was completely a

shock. It was completely out of the blue. And

then I got another call later that evening to

let me know that he had passed away. And I didn't

know how to feel. I didn't know what to think.

I didn't know how to process it. To be honest,

the last seven weeks of my life have kind of

been that, not knowing how to process this, the

shock of it, the sadness of it. Like I miss him

so deeply. And I don't know how to get through

this difficult time that I'm going through. And

I'm like, God, this is so hard. And I think when

it comes to... When it comes to becoming a Christian,

I think we have a misconception. And one of the

biggest misconceptions we have in life is that

when you meet Jesus, everything is good. Everything

is great. It's rainbows and butterflies. It's

not compromised. You know what I mean? Like it's

good. We're not gonna have any issues because

we meet Jesus and everything is smooth sailing

from then on out. And I don't know why we have

this misconception or this belief because Jesus

himself said something completely different.

Like literally when Jesus was on the earth, he

told us straight up, like Jesus doesn't mince

words. He straight up says it in John chapter

John 16:33

16, verse 33. He says, in this world, you will

have trouble. Thanks, Jesus. Thanks, bro. Like

he didn't even say, oh, maybe you'll encounter

some issues in this life. You know, we'll see

how it goes. He's like, no, you will have trouble.

It's gonna happen. If you are a human that's

alive, you are going to have trouble in this.

But the call in scripture to follow Jesus isn't

an exemption from suffering. It's an invitation

to walk through suffering differently. Because

the world has a way that you walk through suffering.

The world has a way that you walk through it.

And for those of us who call ourselves followers

of Jesus, you need to know that suffering will

happen, but maybe. Maybe that suffering in your

life is an opportunity. Maybe it's an invitation

to worship. And I know that sounds weird. Suffering

and invitation to worship? That makes no sense.

Oh, we know how to worship when times are good.

You know what I mean? When you buy a new car,

you're like, God, we praise you. And listen to

how much we're gonna praise you. I'm gonna turn

up my new Bose sound system right now. Listen

to that. We're gonna worship you. All right,

when you get the email that says you got the

job. You're like, God, we worship you. We're

gonna give you praise right now because God,

life is good. When your kid makes the team, we're

gonna worship you, God. All right, those of you

who are single and ready to mingle, come on,

you know who you are. And you meet that one that

could be the one. Praise you, Jesus. Some of

you are like, yes, Jesus, come on, quicker. It's

easy to praise God when times are good. I want

you to have breakthrough in your life. It's easy

to praise God. I imagine the Israelites as they

walk through on dry ground, as the Red Sea is

parted through Moses, through God's power, Red

Sea parts, they walk through on dry ground, the

Israelites are saved and they're like, we have

major breakthrough. Praise God. Worship breaks

out. When you have breakthrough in your life,

maybe you experience God in a new way in your

life. It's easy to praise God. Maybe you broke

the addiction in your life and it's easy to praise

God in that moment when you have breakthrough

in your life. But what do you do when you find

yourself in a situation that you don't wanna

be in? What do you do when you find yourself

in a situation where you're like, how did I even

get here? I'm walking through a valley and I

don't even wanna be here. How do you handle that?

Two weeks ago, we were driving to San Diego for

my dad's memorial service. So we loaded up our

15 passenger van because when my family rolls,

we roll, baby. We have to load up a 15 passenger

van to get there. I got a lot of kids. And so

as we were heading there, when we got to San

Diego, we were gonna pick up my in -laws that

had flown in for my dad's service. And so we

needed nine seats, which means it's 15 passenger

van time. So we loaded up and as we were heading

to San Diego, we're coming in and we're coming

over the last hill before we go down into the

last town in Arizona before you get to California.

Sorry I said that word. I triggered some of you

right now by saying that word. I won't say it

again. But as we're heading over there, we get

to the last city, and as we're going down the

hill, the car starts making this clunking sound.

And the sound is like not a good sound. And I

don't know anything about cars besides when you

press the gas pedal, they go. And so I took a

video of this sound, and we sent it to our friend

who's a mechanic. We were planning on stopping

to get gas in Yuma anyway, and so we stopped

in Yuma to get gas, and we pull up to the pump,

and I put the gas pump in, and my phone rings.

And it's our friend who's a mechanic, and I answer

the phone, and he goes, listen, your car's done.

And I was like, when you say done, do you mean

done? Like, I gotta replace the windshield wipers,

or what? Like, what do we gotta do here? He's

like, no, your engine is completely done. And

to make it worse, when I just find out that the

engine is completely blown and my car is completely

useless, I look over to the gas pump that I just

pumped $75 worth of gas into a car that won't

work. So man, we start calling rental car companies.

There's three rental car companies in Yuma. And

I called every single one of them. Please, dear

God, let there be a 15 passenger van. So I called

every single one of them. There's no 15 passenger

van. Like, okay, we'll go to the second best

option. If we can get a minivan, they have seven

seats. When we get to San Diego, we will just

strap my in -laws on the top of the car. It'll

be awesome. So we called every single rental

car company to try to get a minivan. None of

them had a minivan. So we went, okay, what do

we do now? An economy car doesn't have enough

seats for our family, but we have my wife and

I that can both drive. So we're gonna try to

get two economy cars. That's our plan. We called

every single rental car company. None of them

had any rental cars. Listen to me. How does a

rental car company have no rental cars? This

should be a crime. Somebody investigate this

right now. Like, how is Yuma a real place? That's

crazy. And so we're stuck here. Called every

single rental car company, there is no rental

cars. Our van is done. And I'm going, you cannot

even script this situation any worse. I'm literally

driving to my dad's funeral and our car gives

up. See, sometimes in life, we find ourself in

valleys, we find ourself in situations, but you

have to understand that God has called us to

follow him, and there's no caveat to when life

is hard. Yeah, you can follow me, but when life

gets hard, you get a free pass. When you're walking

through a valley, it's okay, you don't have to

actually follow me. God says, here, follow me.

And there's no caveat to what that looks like

when life gets difficult. We're gonna be in Acts

Acts 16 · chapter mention

chapter 16 today. And there's a lot of examples

throughout scripture of people who've walked

through difficult times. What we have here is

we have Paul and Silas. And the Paul and Silas

are walking around and they're doing the Lord's

work, man. They are preaching Jesus. They're

preaching to people and people are getting saved.

People are going, hey, I wanna follow Jesus.

And all this crowd has come with them. And so

as this crowd forms, there's also this girl that's

following them. And this girl that's following

them is annoying the heck out of them. She keeps

saying stuff. And she's demon possessed. And

as she keeps coming, I love this. It's so funny

in scripture, Paul gets fed up with it and he

stops and he casts the demon out. Not because

he's a good guy, but because he got annoyed.

He's like, I'm sick of this, get out of her.

And he casts this demon out of this girl. The

problem is this demon in this girl was giving

her this power to be able to tell the future

for people. She was a fortune teller. And so

she was a slave girl and her masters were profiting

off the fact that because of this demon, people

would come to her. She would tell them their

fortune and then they would make money. Paul

cast the demon out and all of a sudden their

moneymaker is gone. And so they're very, very

upset. And so they seize Paul and Silas and we

pick up the story in verse 22. It says this,

the crowd joined in the attack against Paul and

Silas. And the magistrates ordered them to be

stripped and beaten with rods. It says, after

they had been severely flogged, not regularly

flogged, severely flogged, they were thrown into

prison and the jailer was commanded to guard

them carefully. When he received these orders,

he put them in the inner cell and fastened their

feet in stocks. Listen, this is a bad day. You

may have had a bad day, but I don't know how

many of you have had a Paul and Silas bad day.

They are beaten to the point of almost death,

severely flogged. And then they are thrown into

prison, but not just any cell in prison. They're

taken to the deepest, darkest cell. And what

you need to know about a Roman prison is the

farther in you go, the worse the conditions are.

There is no light. You are in the worst conditions.

And they are chained in this. Their feet are

put in the stocks in the inner cell. They're

in the belly of the beast. They are in the deepest

part of the doo -doo, if you know what I mean.

This is where you do not wanna be. They are in

a valley right now. And for them, maybe you've

walked through a valley where you find yourself

in the same place as them going, I don't know

how I got here. This is not where I wanted to

be. This is not what I had planned for my day

or my life. And here's where I'm at. So what

is their response in this place that they find

themselves right here? Verse 25, about midnight,

which by the way, if I just got. beat to almost

dying by midnight, I'd be asleep. So it's about

midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing

hymns to God and the other prisoners were listening

to them. Their response in a major valley was

worship. Their response in the major valley they

did not expect to be in was to worship God. And

I'm not gonna read the next part of the story.

If you know the next part of the story, I'm not

gonna read the part where an earthquake happens

and the prison doors are blown off and the chains

fall off of them. I'm not gonna read that part.

You know why? Because Paul and Silas' response

to their valley did not come after God showed

up. In their valley before God showed up, their

response was worship. When they didn't see a

way out, their response was worship. God's power

doesn't dictate how we respond to the valley

we're in. Oh, God is worthy of our praise. Don't

hear me wrong. But it's not an expectation of

a miracle that allows us to worship God. In the

middle of their valley, in the middle of their

brokenness, in the middle of their situation,

Paul and Silas worship because it's not worshiping

after the valley, it's worshiping in. If you're

taking notes, write this down. We have to remember,

we are worshipers. We are worshipers. Life is

worship. I preached a message a few months ago

that God had been putting on my heart to understand

that life is worship. I have to understand that

God created everything in the garden. He created

all of humanity. He created everything with this

original design to be a worshiper. That is the

purpose of creation is to worship God. And he

created you with an original design. And then

what happened is sin came in. And when sin broke

original design, there needed to be a solution.

And the solution is Jesus. God sent Jesus to

stand in your place to be the solution for the

brokenness and the sin. And what that did is

it restored original design. Remember, original

design is a worshiper. And so for those of you

who are in Jesus, your original design is restored.

You are restored to being a worshiper, which

means that your life is worship, which means

that everywhere you find yourself is an opportunity

to worship because you were created as a worshiper

and life is worship. And I am not talking about

singing songs. Not talking about singing, right?

In the American church, we have put worship in

a box. And the box is when we say things like,

would you stand for worship? Would the worship

band come on up? And so we limit worship to the

time when we sing songs in church. And you have

to understand that that is not what worship is.

That is an act of worship through song, but your

life is actually worship. And you have to remember

that you are a. So we pulled the van into a parking

spot. We were kind of at the pump for a lot of

it. And we pulled into this parking lot off to

the side, right? It was making a sound that was

just unbelievable, right? It sounded like Chewbacca

got something stuck in his throat, right? It

was like, like it was terrible. Come on, that

was funnier than that. That was, I mean, that

was good. That just, that was off the top of

the dome right there. And I'm going, man, we

got to call these rental car companies. And so

I'm behind the Maverick. In Yuma, Arizona, it's

105 degrees. Listen, I don't know why people

live there. I'm just saying. If you're from Yuma,

God bless you. All right, I'm just saying. I'm

glad you got out. Come on, don't write me an

email. That's a joke too, okay? It's 105 degrees

and I'm pacing behind. I'm calling my friends

to complain. I'm calling the rental car companies

to bargain with them. Can you just fly a car

in here? Like, I don't know, do something. I'm

on the phone with all of them. I've called my

close friends to complain about my situation.

I'm not in a moment where I want to worship God.

But God spoke to me in that moment. And the question

he asked me in that moment is I'm literally in

the biggest, deepest part of this situation.

The question that God is asking me right there

is how do you worship me right now? Like, how

do I worship in the way that I act, in the way

that I react, right? Now. Because if life is

worship, it's not an exclusion for when you're

going through a valley. And in the valley, God

asked me the question of how are you worshiping

right now? And I think what we have to understand

is that worship is a choice, not a feeling. It's

a choice that we make. It's not a feeling that

we have. I don't think Paul and Silas are like,

man, I just got beat within an inch of my life

and now I'm chained to a prison wall. You know

what I feel like doing right now? I feel like

a worship session. Like that's not what they're

thinking at that moment. You know why? Because

worship isn't a feeling, it's a choice. They

chose to worship. As I'm pacing behind the Maverick,

105 degrees in Yuma, and it kind of stinks. I

didn't feel like worshiping. I felt like saying

a lot of other words that I can't say right now.

But I didn't feel like worshiping. Worship is

a choice, not a feeling. It says this in Psalm

42 .5. Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so

disturbed within me? Going through a valley,

he says, what do we do? But put your hope in

God, for I will yet praise him, my savior and

my God. The choice to worship in the valley is

a choice that you have to make. And what this

choice looks like, worshiping in the valley looks

like a thousand daily decisions of faithfulness.

The decisions that you make during your day,

when you go through, It's these decisions of

faithfulness, right? It's choosing prayer instead

of panic when you're anxious. When you walk through

the valley and you're going through it, it's

choosing to trust his character when you don't

see his plan. It's choosing in these moments

forgiveness over bitterness. Worshiping in these

moments and the choice to worship looks like

when you're grieving to bring your pain honestly

to God instead of running from God. It looks

like when temptation hits in your life and the

enemy's attacking and the devil's saying, go

for this, try this, it's gonna feel good. It's

for you to stop in that moment and say, listen,

I'm gonna choose what God desires over what I

desire in this moment. And you can look back

and you can say, God, listen, you are worth more

than this temporary thing because I'm gonna make

a choice to worship you. We were created to worship.

And that means that every situation we find ourself

in is an opportunity to worship. So how do we

have that attitude of worship when we're in the

valley? You need to know this. Your valley does

not cancel God's presence. Because when we find

ourselves in a valley, a lot of times the question

we ask is, God, why? God, where are you? I don't

see you anywhere, God. All I see is pain. All

I see is suffering. I'm consumed by what's going

on. God, you have left. Where are you, God? And

you need to know that wherever God is, is an

opportunity to worship him. And he is everywhere.

He's everywhere. Even when you don't feel it,

God is everywhere. And so everywhere you find

yourself is an opportunity to worship him because

he is there. We have to realize that he meets

you in your brokenness. God hasn't abandoned

you, he's meeting you in your brokenness. Why

are Paul and Silas, while chained to a wall in

prison, why are they able to worship? Because

they know that God is there. In that moment,

they weren't seeing evidence of God, but they

knew that God was there, so they were able to

worship God in their situation. And what happens

when we're able to posture our heart to worship

God in the situation that we're in? We start

seeing God's goodness in the situation. God is

always there, which means there's goodness that

God has given us in those situations. I don't

know if you've made the trip from Prescott to

Yuma. There's a lot of nothing on your way. And

I could have broke down anywhere along those

desert roads where there's literally nothing

in every direction. But God's goodness was that

we broke down at a gas station. That we made

it to an actual place where there was things

and we could stop at a gas station. Not just

any gas station, Maverick. They have food, which

means they have tables, which means we sat in

air conditioning in tables. God is so good. In

the middle of this situation, God was able to

show his goodness in where we were even at. The

fix to our situation is we called my mom, who

lives in San Diego, who drove from San Diego

to Yuma to pick us up to drive us back. But three

months ago, my mom had an economy car that wouldn't

have fit us, but she got a new car that has eight

seats. Seven for us and one for her. God was

working before we even knew we needed him to

work. God's goodness was showing up months before

we even needed the situation that we were in.

God was saying, no, listen, my goodness is here

and I'm gonna work in your situation even when

you don't know that you need me to work. The

goodness of God was showed through people. We

had people that found out about our situation

and they said, hey, we're gonna send you some

money because we know you can't afford a rental

car. We had people that are in our church that

work for a rental car company that are on the

phone trying to figure out how they can get us

a car, sending us discount codes saying, listen,

I'm gonna show up for you. The goodness of God

was shown through people showing up and loving

us. Our friend who's a mechanic who we sent the

video to said, hey, listen, van's done. We're

like, well, then what are we gonna do with the

van now? We parked it in a spot and we tell the

Maverick people, hey, we're gonna leave our van

here. And they're like, when are you coming to

get it? I'm like, I don't know. He drove from

Prescott to Yuma and towed our van back here

for free. Why? Because God was working and there

was goodness of God even in a situation where

it felt like God was absent. Sometimes we don't

feel God in our valley, but you need to understand

that your valley does not cancel God's presence.

And the truth is that valleys are actually often

places where God forms us. You find yourself

in a valley and you go, God, why am I here? And

he goes, because I want to deepen you. Because

I wanna form you. Because I wanna reveal myself

to you. Maybe you're just a seed. See, seeds

are planted before they grow. Seeds are put in

the dirt. Seeds are put in the darkness. Seeds

are put in the place where they go, why am I

here? I'm in the darkness, I'm in the dirt, but

they are in a place specifically so that roots

will grow so that they can flourish. Maybe your

darkness right now is just you being planted.

Maybe your brokenness right now, maybe the dirt

that you feel is your life right now is just

God planting you somewhere so that your roots

can grow in him and you can flourish. Because

even in our valley, God is present. And here's

the cool thing about how we act in this. Write

this down, your worship in the valley affects

others. Your worship in the valley affects others.

Man, I love the story where Paul and Silas are

in prison. Because I can imagine the other prisoners.

The verse says that they worshiped and they prayed

and the other prisoners were listening. Can you

imagine the other prisoners? They're like, oh

man, I'm gonna listen to these guys. They just

got beat within an inch of their life. They're

probably gonna be crying all night. And all of

a sudden they start worshiping and they're like,

what the heck is going on? What is going on?

This doesn't warrant this response right now.

What is happening? That's not the response that

you expect. And in our life, when things don't

go the way we want, there's an expected response.

But when we worship in the valley, it affects

other people. It affects other people. You know

why? Because your kids are watching. Because

your coworkers are watching. Because your family

is watching. Because your spouse is watching.

And what if in your valley, it becomes someone

else's evidence of Jesus? What if your valley

is someone else's evidence of Jesus because they

see you in a time that you should not be worshiping,

but your worship affects others? I'm behind the

maverick and God had just spoke to me and told

me, hey, listen, what would it look like for

you to worship in this situation? My attitude

shifted because I didn't wanna worship. And I

go back into the Maverick and my kids were sitting

at this table and man, there's so many things

around them. One of them being the IC machine

that glows like a beacon from heaven in the corner

of the store. And they're like, look at that.

It's beautiful. And so my oldest comes up to

me and she goes, dad, with my own money, can

I buy an IC? And I looked at her and I said,

no. She goes, okay, okay. And I said, because

I'm buying them for all of you right now. They're

like, no way. Greatest thing ever. Because how

you worship in the valley affects those around

you. How you act in the valley, how you react

in the valley. Are you gonna react to what you

want? Because our first response usually is the

one you shouldn't do. How you act, how you react.

How you represent Jesus, because if you're a

follower of Jesus, you are called to follow him

regardless of the situation. Are you representing

Jesus well? Because your worship in the valley

affects others. Here's what you need to know

about the valley. I don't know what valley you

find yourself in. I don't know how long you've

been walking through this valley, but you need

to know this, valleys reveal what we're anchored

to. Valleys reveal what we're anchored to. Because

if you were a ship, what happens when an anchor

is gone is that you are tossed wherever the storm

takes you. Because an anchor holds you in place.

And if the anchor is not there, then you are

tossed when the storms come. The storms will

come. Jesus said, you will encounter tough times.

It won't be easy. What are you anchored to? Because

if your life has been anchored to your job, if

it has been anchored to your car, if it has been

anchored to your house, if it has been anchored

to a relationship, if it's been anchored to a

person, if it's been anchored to anything but

Jesus, when those things are gone, you will be

tossed. But when your anchor is Jesus, you will

stand firm. Think of the book of Job. In the

Old Testament, the enemy, Satan, the devil looks

and he goes, does anyone worship God? And God

goes, yeah, Job does. He goes, well, that's easy

for him. He's got everything. He's got a great,

great income. He's got wealth. He's got riches.

He's got servants. He's got everything. He's

got health. God goes, okay, take it away. Satan

goes and takes it away. He goes, hey, I'm gonna

cut this because you're anchored to your wealth.

Your wealth is gone. Job goes, joke's on you.

I wasn't anchored to my wealth. I'm still praising

God. He goes, okay, well, I'm gonna cut this.

You're anchored to your family. And he goes,

joke's on you. I'm not anchored to my family.

I'm anchored to God. Well, I'm gonna cut your

health then. You're anchored to that. I'm not

anchored to that. Joke's on you. I'm anchored

to God. And the devil thought that he was anchored

to all these other things in his life. And his

strategy was to cut these things out of his life

to see if he would still be worshiping God. But

he was anchored to God. And so when you're anchored

to God, it doesn't matter what falls apart in

your life. It doesn't matter the valley that

you're walking through. You have something that

holds you solid and it is Jesus. So church, listen

to me. Cling to Jesus. I don't know what you're

going through, but I know that when you cling

to Jesus, you get through what you're going through.

Because when Jesus is your anchor and the storm

hits, you stay anchored. You know why? Because

he will never leave you or forsake you. He will

never leave you or forsake you. How do we know

he'll never leave us or forsake us? Because of

the gospel. The gospel means good news. What

is the good news? Even in your valley, the good

news is this, is that you could not pay the penalty

for sin, which is death, but Jesus could. And

God sent Jesus to die in your place on a cross.

And when Jesus died in your place on a cross,

he made a way for you to have a relationship

with God. And the relationship that you have

with God through Jesus is your anchor. And some

of you in here, you've never put your faith and

trust in Jesus. And you don't have an anchor.

You are just primed and ready to be tossed by

the storm that is life. And my encouragement

to you today is this. You gotta meet Jesus. And

if you don't get anything else today, you gotta

meet Jesus. Because when the grenade of a loss

of a family member gets tossed in your life,

if you don't have Jesus to cling on to, you have

nothing. Because when things aren't going the

way you want, when you're walking through the

valley and you're going, God, I don't even see

an exit. I've been in this valley for too long

and I don't even know how to get through it.

If you don't have Jesus, you will not get through

it. Jesus is calling you today. For those of

you who maybe have put your faith and trust in

Jesus, but you've realized that your anchor is

not in him, you have to make your anchor Jesus.

Jesus has to be the thing that you are anchored

to in the storm. Because Jesus said it himself.

He said, you're gonna find tough times. But I

only read you a piece of that verse. But actually,

the full verse in John 16, 33 says this. I have

told you these things so that in me you may have

peace. Peace. Because in this world, you're gonna

have trouble. It's gonna happen. He says, but

take heart. He says, I've overcome the world.

Yes, you're gonna have trouble. But Jesus says,

I've overcome the world. Jesus is our peace.

In our storm, in our valley, in the thing that

you didn't want to walk through, Jesus is our

source of peace. So let me ask you this question.

How is your worship in the valley? Let's pray.

God, thank you. That you allow us to worship

you. God, thank you that you even listen to our

worship. God, I pray that you would help us to

live our life in a way that worships you even

in our valley. That we would ask the question

of, how is my worship in the valley right now?

Because how we act and how we react is an opportunity,

God. to worship you, to praise you, to represent

you, to affect the others in our life. It is

only because you are our anchor, Jesus, so I

pray that we would stay anchored to you. Whatever

it is that we are going through, whatever pain

and suffering is represented in this room, God,

pray that you would be our anchor. God, I pray
