  7. enjoy this week's message. Let's open your Bibles,

  8. if you would, to John chapter 4. And I believe

    John 4 chapter mention

  9. the Lord has got something to share with us this

  10. morning. I'm going to continue where we kind

  11. of left off last week. I'm going to do my very

  12. best to kind of bring us into some understanding

  13. of this passage of John 4. We know that this

  14. passage is a very famous passage. There is so

  15. much, as I said last week, there is so much depth

  16. inside this passage that we often skip over some

  17. of the things that Jesus was actually uncovering

  18. and digging at in regard to knowing spirit and

  19. truth. And so, Father, in Jesus' name this morning,

  20. Lord, we've come to your altar, we've come to

  21. your throne. Lord, we're reminded that the priests,

  22. they came to the altar to offer prayers before

  23. you. And Lord, that's what we get to do every

  24. time we come to the house of God. We come to,

  25. Lord, we recognize we as people are now the church.

  26. And Lord, this becomes just a gathering place,

  27. a sheep shed, so to speak, to where we encounter

  28. your presence, where each person brings, Lord,

  29. Lord, their redemption, they bring the spirit

  30. of God that's inside of them. And God, we come

  31. to collectively worship and honor you. And in

  32. this moment, Lord, we're coming to you not only

  33. as king and as Lord and as savior, but now we're

  34. coming to you, Lord, in the feeding time of your

  35. people. You said, you are the sheep of my pasture

  36. and of your hand. And Lord, we come to you as

  37. sheep this morning and we ask you, oh, shepherd

  38. king, We ask you to feed us this morning your

  39. word. You are more than just stale bread, Lord.

  40. You are the living bread. You speak a living

  41. word. And I'm asking you to anoint your word

  42. this morning that it would go deep into our heart.

  43. And God, like the word, can only do according

  44. to Hebrews chapter 4. It can divide. It divides

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  45. between that which is soulish and that which

  46. is truly spirit. It's also said in your word

  47. that your word was like a hammer. And Lord, it

  48. breaks up the fallow ground. It breaks the hardness

  49. of the heart. I'm asking now, Holy Spirit, that

  50. you would come and with the word of God, you

  51. would begin to feed, you would begin to reveal.

  52. Let the light of your truth shine forth this

  53. morning as we open the scriptures and that you

  54. would speak to us. Lord, we ask that you would

  55. help us step away. from things of routine, of

  56. shields and barriers that keep us insulated from

  57. the power of your word. We step from behind the

  58. rocks of excuses. We ask for the fig leaves to

  59. be set aside and we ask you to clothe us in your

  60. truth. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Thank

  61. you, Jenny. I appreciate it. John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  62. we'll kind of just start here where we left off

  63. last week. Just a reminder, John chapter 4, verse

    John 4:10

  64. 10 and 11. We understand, and let me just give

  65. a little narration. We understand that Jesus

  66. was coming into the region of Sychar, the area

  67. of Samaria. And I'm not going to read the first

  68. 10 verses because if I do, I'll never get to

  69. where I'm going to go. So I'm just kind of giving

  70. a summation. And he stands. And as he's been

  71. journeying by foot, now, remind you, this is

  72. why it takes us so long to go through some of

  73. these series, is because Jesus never operated

  74. in a motorized vehicle. He walked everywhere.

  75. So that's why it's slow. We're walking our way

  76. from Passover to Pentecost as we're kind of talking

  77. through this mindset. Jesus has now walked. into

  78. Sychar area, into Samaria, and he is sitting

  79. by or standing by the well that was driven into

  80. the ground in the area that was given by their

  81. father Abraham. The reality is he had been walking

  82. probably since daybreak. That time started there

  83. in when we deal with time frame there. As you're

  84. looking at the Bible, their morning started at

  85. 6 a .m. Because that's usually sun up to sun

  86. down. 6 a .m. to 6 p .m. Everything was within

  87. usually those 12 hour periods. And so Jesus had

  88. been walking for six hours. And he was tired.

  89. The disciples had gone to go get some food. And

  90. Jesus was by himself at the well. And coming

  91. out of the well at noontime was a lady that came.

  92. And you never come to the well. Now, this is

  93. important. You never come to the well in the

  94. heat of the day. That wasn't normal. In fact,

  95. is anybody that lives in Arizona right now, or

  96. in Palm Springs, or in Palm Desert, or anywhere

  97. that has the word desert to it, in the summer,

  98. you don't go out and go, hey, why don't we just

  99. take a nice walk at two in the afternoon? You

  100. can fry eggs on the sidewalk. You can fry, literally,

  101. on my solar panel, you could fry an egg. Literally,

  102. I mean, you just don't do it. People stop working.

  103. They put wet cloths over them. They either work

  104. early in the morning and at about 10, 10 .30,

  105. they cut it, and then they get back after the

  106. sun sets because of how intense the heat is.

  107. So think of it in the Middle Eastern culture.

  108. This is the same aspect that in the middle of

  109. the day, at noontime when they should be eating.

  110. And then they did what they would, what we would

  111. call in Latin America, we would call a little

  112. siesta time. That would be their time to kind

  113. of take a break, let it digest, try to get a

  114. little nap because you're going to go back to

  115. work after the hotness of the sun sets down.

  116. Here comes this woman to get water to actually

  117. work during the day. And Jesus is there. We pick

  118. this up in verse 10. And Jesus, as he asked her,

  119. he said, would you give me a drink? And she kind

  120. of rebuffed that statement and Jesus' response

  121. to her rebuffing, her rebuffing was this, you,

  122. being a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a

  123. drink? And Jesus' response in verse 10 is this,

  124. he says, Jesus answered her, if you knew, could

  125. you say that with me? If you knew, if you knew

  126. the gift of God, and who it is saying to you

  127. give me a drink you would have asked him and

  128. he would have given you living water now to review

  129. from last week we said listen jesus was revealing

  130. himself first and foremost in this passage as

  131. the gift of god he said if you knew the gift

  132. of god he was saying listen i am the gift of

  133. God. Now that, if you just say it in today's

  134. context and don't understand who Jesus was, that

  135. sounds a little arrogant. I am the gift of God.

  136. Well, if you're the son of God, yes, you, you

  137. are. But, but the reality is he was, he was saying

  138. something that would be said all the way through

  139. the scriptures for God, the father. In John 3,

  140. 16, just one chapter prior to this, gave his

  141. only begotten son that whosoever would believe

  142. in him would not perish but have everlasting

  143. life. Jesus had no problem declaring what the

  144. father's will or what the father's gift was to

  145. the world. And if you knew who it was, it was

  146. the gift of God. If you knew the gift of God,

  147. Jesus saying, I'm that gift. Jesus is declaring

  148. also the heart of the father. The heart of the

  149. father is saying what? I am now declaring something

  150. about God that you have not understood. God's

  151. nature is a gift giver. Now if there's anything

  152. that that culture needed, if there's anything

  153. that the Jewish people needed and the Samaritan

  154. people needed and every other tribe and nation

  155. needed is they needed a fresh understanding of

  156. who God was. Because the narrative of the goodness

  157. of God had not broke through. The overwhelming

  158. narrative was God is to be feared. God is to

  159. be respected. And whatever type of God they had,

  160. it was always on the basis that humanity was

  161. trying to please God in some way to satisfy him.

  162. That's the narrative of all the nations of how

  163. they serve their deities. Jesus comes on the

  164. scene saying, listen, I've come to breach. Excuse

  165. me, to bridge the breach that came through sin.

  166. And I've come to set something in place here

  167. so that you would understand the real nature

  168. of the father and that his desire is to give

  169. of himself. He is at essence a giver of life,

  170. a giver of love, a giver of grace, a giver of

  171. mercy, a giver of hope, a giver of all things

  172. that are good. That is his nature. And that smoked.

  173. The belts of every person. Because the reality

  174. is. They couldn't compute that. Because culture.

  175. Mandates. Religion. Had created a mindset. Of

  176. how to approach God. And that's why Jesus was.

  177. Acting so intentional. With this woman saying.

  178. If you knew. The gift of God. And who it was.

  179. Saying to you. Give me a drink. You would have

  180. asked him and he would have given you. Notice

  181. how Jesus turned it. He was saying, listen, if

  182. you just give him, you're little. That's all

  183. God is looking for. You give him what you have.

  184. Just give him a drink. Give him the act. of what

  185. he's asking. And you have no idea what's in store

  186. because he's the giver of life at every area.

  187. See, Jesus was declaring to this woman, and here's

  188. where we ended up last week, the gift of God

  189. wants to be known. Really, that's what Jesus

  190. was doing with the Samaritan woman. He was declaring

  191. God's gift is not meant to be in secret. God's

  192. gift is meant to be known. God's gift is meant

  193. to be experienced. And Jesus was saying to the

  194. Samaritan, which would represent all Gentile

  195. nations, he was saying, listen, he's going to

  196. say this here a little further. He said, listen,

  197. salvation is of the Jews. Because she had some

  198. arguments. She goes, well, you Jews say you worship

  199. over there at that mountain. We worship at this

  200. mountain. And Jesus... I had people come to me

  201. over the years. I've had almost 35 years of,

  202. 36 years of ministry, 33 years of ministry full

  203. time. 36 years of ministry, I've had people come

  204. say, you know, Jesus doesn't correct and doesn't

  205. correct people. He's always so kind and gentle.

  206. I'm thinking, have you read any of the stories?

  207. I mean, you know, have you read any of the times

  208. he talked to the disciples? Oh, you of little

  209. faith. Why do you not believe? Or the time that

  210. he would say to his disciples, how long must

  211. I be with you? These are not statements of great

  212. endearing. These are statements of exasperated

  213. parenting. And in this particular instance with

  214. the Samaritan woman, he basically just said,

  215. you're wrong. You Jews worship there, we worship

  216. here, but I know when Messiah comes, this was

  217. her phrase, I know when Messiah comes, he will

  218. teach us all things. He goes, I'm he. Salvation

  219. is of the Jews. Folks, if that isn't a correction,

  220. I don't know what is. That's not a loving, oh,

  221. nice try, honey. Here's a participation award.

  222. He literally comes and re - frames her thinking.

  223. And you understand what he did was actually show

  224. us what it takes for repentance. Because repentance

  225. before you can ever turn and walk something different

  226. means you have to change your heart perspective

  227. and your thought process to actually realign

  228. with God's. She actually had to let go. If she

  229. was going to embrace who he was and what was

  230. standing in front of her and receive the gift

  231. that he was ready to give, not just one gift,

  232. but multiple gifts. of love and acceptance of

  233. salvation, of living water, of the Spirit of

  234. God. If she was going to receive the gift that

  235. she didn't know, she would have to do what? She'd

  236. have to take the correction, reframe it, believe

  237. it, and then allow a new understanding to come

  238. to her. Do you understand? That's often why people

  239. don't get the gifts that God actually has for

  240. them. Because they want to receive a gift without

  241. actually changing their perspective. Jesus was

  242. saying, listen, you've not known the nature of

  243. my father. You've not known his gifts, his goodness.

  244. Jesus is saying, if you really knew, if you knew

  245. God's nature and God's heart, then you would

  246. want everything that he has for you. Jesus continues

  247. the dialogue with this, if you really knew what

  248. I bring. And I want us to focus our attention

  249. on this in what it says in John 10. When it says,

  250. if you knew the gift, you would have asked. That

  251. word is eteo. in the Greek. And I want to drill

  252. down on this this morning. I know sometimes the

  253. Greek, we don't always understand it, but it's

  254. important to look at the original language that

  255. this was written in because the word ateo actually

  256. means something beyond just this phrase. This

  257. one word in the Greek actually means you would

  258. have asked. You would have asked. Four words.

  259. equaling one word in the Greek. That word ateo

  260. means this, to crave, to call, to ask, to desire,

  261. to require, and to beseech of wanting the more.

  262. Now, that's important because, and I'm gonna

  263. come down and just try to explain this. If you

  264. understand what Jesus was saying, if you knew

  265. who it was that you were talking to, if you understood

  266. the gift of God, if you had a fresh revelation

  267. and you stepped outside of the banks of your

  268. thought process, your religion, your culture,

  269. even in the big one for most of us today, you'd

  270. step outside. Of the issue of what you think

  271. you've done wrong. And the framework of what

  272. you've done wrong. And you'd stop allowing those

  273. voices to keep you from receiving. If you'd just

  274. allow yourself to step into who he really is.

  275. You would have had something inside of you. That

  276. would have. A teode. What would have a teode?

  277. It would have asked. It would have called. It

  278. would have almost begged to do what? To receive

  279. something more. You see, at the heart of every

  280. person, when you meet, thank you, looking at

  281. me there, because it said yes. So I'm going to

  282. take Van, for instance. At the heart of when

  283. Van accepted Jesus Christ, at the very essence

  284. of who he is, when he surrendered to Jesus Christ,

  285. several things happened at the same time, the

  286. Bible tells us. He was, when he repented of his

  287. sins and he asked Jesus to come and live in his

  288. life, here's what happened. Number one, he was

  289. justified. That word is a big word, but it simply

  290. means he was made right with the laws that he

  291. was contrary to. And God legally made him right

  292. because of, Christ's life through faith that

  293. is now given to him right standing so he's no

  294. longer in illegal standing he's no longer unlawful

  295. he's been made right second sanctification begin

  296. to take place meaning what what he couldn't clean

  297. up himself the Holy Spirit begins to clean up

  298. and begin to work Number three, the faith that

  299. he didn't have before. God granted faith the

  300. time that he believed that word. And faith partnered

  301. and accompanied grace to do the work in his life

  302. that he couldn't do on his own. And then this

  303. thing that we're talking about here happened

  304. as well. Meaning what? He knew the gift of God.

  305. And at the knowing of the gift of God. Okay,

  306. hang on. I'm not going to hurt you. Too bad here.

  307. Okay. At the knowing of the gift of God. Back.

  308. Right. Just smack right in there. All of a sudden.

  309. Okay. All of a sudden there was something imparted

  310. to him that wanted more. It wasn't self -generated.

  311. He didn't have to like kickstart an old Harley

  312. in the morning. Like, you know, I think I want

  313. Jesus. I think I want, that's a stupid thing.

  314. I think, no. He automatically had on the inside

  315. something that said, what I receive from him

  316. is calling me and drawing me to want to get more

  317. of him. I've got to say this to you. That's how

  318. you know you got really saved. In the essence

  319. of justification, sanctification, regeneration,

  320. faith, something deposited in that grace gift

  321. that came to the inside and you woke up with

  322. the next morning going, you didn't wake up going,

  323. oh, that was... a lost venture. You wake up in

  324. the morning recognizing something shifted and

  325. there's something in me drawing me to him. That

  326. is that thing of what Jesus was actually calling

  327. forth to that woman saying, listen, if you knew

  328. who was before you, if you knew the gift of God

  329. that was there, you would have asked me. And

  330. I would have given you living water. How does

  331. this work? Well, number one, you have to be able

  332. to step out of the mindsets that hold you. It's

  333. not about tradition. It's not about religion.

  334. It's the fact that you, now listen, I'm all for

  335. truth. We have to have truth. But sometimes the

  336. religion is not actually based in any form of

  337. truth whatsoever. It's based on somebody's opinion

  338. of what they think something means. But they

  339. actually can't point to a theme. I'm not saying

  340. every, there is not a verse for every action

  341. in the Bible but there are themes all the way

  342. through the scripture that address every issue

  343. of life. And sometimes the things that we think

  344. are godly don't even find a stream or a theme

  345. even in the Bible. I mean, I know this for a

  346. fact. I was raised in a godly home. I went to

  347. a place that loved God the Father, God the Son.

  348. They said they knew the Holy Spirit, but they

  349. didn't know how to engage Him. And one of the

  350. things that they preached against in my conservative

  351. upbringing was type of music was, other than

  352. your voice as the instrument that God provided

  353. you, was not righteous. And then you have to

  354. ask yourself, have you read the Bible? With clanging

  355. cymbals, make a joyful noise. With stringed harps,

  356. make a joyful noise. With the lute and the flute,

  357. make a noise. And you have to bypass whole sections

  358. of scripture to believe that gobbledygook. But

  359. it sounded righteous. But the righteousness of

  360. man does not equal the righteousness of God.

  361. Come on, somebody. And the reality is you have

  362. to begin. To step out of these things as God

  363. begins to come to our lives and say, what am

  364. I doing that satisfies me versus am I doing something

  365. that's pleasing and honoring the Lord and am

  366. I receiving of the gift that's life -giving or

  367. am I just drinking natural water in a religious

  368. setting? You all right? I'm gonna keep meddling

  369. and pressing here a little bit. Notice he said,

  370. if you would have asked, Jesus said, I would

  371. have given. That word given in the Greek is the

  372. word, and here we go, didio me. And I love what

  373. the definition of this word means. It means to

  374. give, which we have in our English rendering

  375. here. I would have given. It also means to grant.

  376. It means to reach out. And here's even better.

  377. I'm gonna give you something to administer, to

  378. furnish. Didio me means I'm going to extend and

  379. present. This is the beauty. Now, I know I've...

  380. Did I send him to the hospital? Is it all right?

  381. All right, no, just kidding, just kidding. I

  382. know I was cranking on him here a little bit.

  383. Okay, I'll pick on Van because he's still over

  384. here. Okay, now you have to understand when God

  385. says this, he said, I would have given you, meaning

  386. I would have what? Granted you, I'd give you.

  387. I'm going to give you something to administer.

  388. I'm going to extend and I'm going to present

  389. you with something. If you'd have known who it

  390. was and the gift that was here, I would have

  391. extended and presented you something. with the

  392. waters of life. Let's read it this way. If you'd

  393. have known the gift of God that it was and who

  394. it was, you would have asked me and I would have

  395. given you something to administer. Whoa. Let's

  396. think that through. Do you understand that every

  397. gift that God gives comes with administration?

  398. God doesn't give gifts that are stagnant. Every

  399. gift that he gives comes with the ability to

  400. administrate it. So let's just start off here.

  401. We'll pick on Jody a little bit because he's

  402. sitting over here on this side because I was

  403. over there. That side was way more unruly, so

  404. we're going to just be peaceful right here. Okay,

  405. think about it this way. jode when you receive

  406. salvation the gift that was now imparted into

  407. you you put just put your hands on your chest

  408. right there the gift that was imparted into you

  409. okay now notice it doesn't just stay it's not

  410. to stay dormant it actually is to be administrated

  411. Meaning that there was a godly presence inside

  412. of you that is meant to come now into your mind

  413. and into your heart where you begin to administrate

  414. the truth and the revelation of who you are.

  415. Because at the moment you said, as we were talking

  416. about it, justification, sanctification, regeneration,

  417. faith, grace comes to your life, then what happens?

  418. Well now, 2 Corinthians 5, 17, if any person

  419. is in Christ, They are a new creation. The old

  420. is gone. The new has come. Well, at that point,

  421. the administrative power of the grace gift of

  422. God of salvation to you... helps you not listen

  423. to the voices or the mindset of yesterday. And

  424. therefore, he expects you to administrate the

  425. truth of who you are in God. So as you're walking,

  426. that gift, you're administrating that gift to

  427. different mindsets that would confront you during

  428. the day. You're administrating that gift to the

  429. group of friends around you and to the people

  430. around you. All of a sudden, they're seeing a

  431. change and you're responding. Here's the wonderful

  432. thing about God. Remember I told you that God

  433. always sets the stage. He does what only God

  434. can do, but then he expects you to partner with

  435. him. He sets the stage for you to always partner

  436. in the administration of that gift. You can't

  437. just let the handlebars go and just say, okay,

  438. Jesus. I mean, it's a wonderful song. Jesus take

  439. the wheel, but it's totally unbiblical. Okay.

  440. Jesus take the wheel and he expects you to actually

  441. partner with him. Yes. I understand. It's about

  442. let Jesus be in control, but he still wants you

  443. conscious and hands on the wheel. Okay. Jesus

  444. take the wheel. Doesn't mean hell, whatever Lord

  445. is your will. No, that is not the case. The administration

  446. of salvation means that you are in full faculties

  447. learning to process your thoughts and begin to,

  448. where you didn't have a filter before, now have

  449. a filter to recognize the mixed from the true.

  450. Are you there? The whole point of the Holy Spirit

  451. and the Holy Word is to give you a filter to

  452. determine what is false and what has mixture.

  453. And what you're going to find out in any form

  454. of Christianity is the majority of mixture doesn't

  455. come with outside of the people of God. It comes

  456. within the people of God. That's a good word,

  457. preacher. Because the people on the outside,

  458. they know they're jacked up. They know that they're

  459. lost and fallen. It's the ones that think they

  460. know that carry the mixture that you have to

  461. be able to discern what is coming out of their

  462. talk, their words, their mindset. Is it truth

  463. or is it their own version? That's why Jesus

  464. was dealing with this Samaritan woman. Why? She

  465. was trying to persuade Jesus that where the Jews

  466. worshipped versus where she worshipped was equal

  467. to them. Messiah would sort it all out and she

  468. was good where she was at. And Jesus was saying,

  469. no, listen, if you knew the gift of God that

  470. was in you. and you knew who it was that would

  471. say to you, give me a drink, I would have bestowed

  472. and granted and extended to you. I would have

  473. reached out to you and given you the administration

  474. of the spirit of life and truth. That would cause

  475. you now to think differently. It would cause

  476. you now to make different choices. And as you

  477. partner with it, you're going to learn to discern

  478. the truth from the lie. Are you guys doing okay?

  479. Because this is really, really important. Listen,

  480. in today's culture, the world, the flesh, the

  481. devil will try to convince us. Listen, this is

  482. where you live, this is where I live. It will

  483. try to convince, listen, the world, the flesh,

  484. and the devil doesn't stop the minute you get

  485. saved. Have you noticed that? It's like nobody

  486. puts a little red flag up at your heart and says,

  487. okay, no soliciting by the devil anymore. You

  488. cannot come. Okay, that's not what happens. They

  489. still knock on the door of your mind and your

  490. heart. Why? Because although he knows that you're

  491. in the hand of God, what's he trying to do? He's

  492. trying to keep you from actually walking in the

  493. administration of truth and in the administration

  494. of his Holy Spirit. If he can get you to get

  495. mixture, then you're saved, but your effectiveness

  496. with mixture will be diluted with everyone else,

  497. and he still has the opportunity to pull people

  498. in through deception. See, that's part of my

  499. assignment. Every pastor's assignment is as the

  500. congregation comes in from the week as we celebrate

  501. Jesus and we celebrate the Father and the Holy

  502. Spirit and we offer worship. The word of God

  503. preached is not only to establish doctrine, but

  504. it's also the cleansing power of the word of

  505. God that separates little mixtures and the truth

  506. from the lies of getting in so that what? Not

  507. only is worship stay clean, our lives stay clean,

  508. and we are reaffirmed, encouraged to go out and

  509. serve the Lord in purity and in honesty before

  510. the Lord and before men. That's the whole job.

  511. That's why the preaching of the word is so effective.

  512. It's supposed to be because it comes and it cleanses

  513. us. It not only feeds us, but it acts as a fresh

  514. shower over our conscience, over our values,

  515. over our filters. And so the enemy's goal when

  516. you get saved is he can't take your salvation,

  517. but if he can marginalize you. If he can get

  518. you to believe that God is haphazard in his word.

  519. That God is superstitious. He only once in a

  520. while does what he says he's going to do. If

  521. you can believe that he'll try to get you to

  522. convince you that God has certain favorites and

  523. he doesn't love all of his people the same. He'll

  524. try to convince you that God is kind of like

  525. a bingo that once in a while you get a stream

  526. of truth and favor and you get your answer. But

  527. most of the time it's just I -94. See, if he

  528. can get you to believe that God is haphazard

  529. in his approach to you, that he's fickle, that

  530. he's moody, and you better guard your heart and

  531. play it safe because to give God all of your

  532. heart might mean you get disappointed. He then

  533. has taken your focus off of you trusting the

  534. Father in his timing and you trusting your heart

  535. and preserving you and you've just... fallen

  536. into the snare of a filter of mixture that you

  537. won't be able to administrate purity and truth.

  538. Why? Because out of your past experience, that

  539. spoke to you louder than your encounter with

  540. the gift. You see, when God says in Luke 11,

  541. 13, He says, if you are evil, know how to give

  542. good gifts to your children. How much more will

  543. your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to

  544. those who ask him? He's saying, above all the

  545. gifts. And that's what Jesus was getting with

  546. the Samaritan woman. Here was the gift. Of the

  547. son of God himself. And the giver of living water.

  548. Which we'll get to in the weeks to follow here.

  549. Which is always representative of the Holy Spirit.

  550. Jesus here becomes not only the gift. of salvation

  551. but he would be the gift he would be the one

  552. who would give the Holy Spirit of the gift that

  553. would keep on giving and yet because of experience

  554. because of culture because of religion because

  555. of fear because of whatever excuse many times

  556. we just simply only settle for the little things

  557. in the natural And we don't actually open our

  558. heart for the things that he actually has. You

  559. see, Jesus in his correction of this woman in

  560. John 4, 22. And Jenny, if you'd come to the piano

  561. wherever you're at. Jenny, Jenny, Jenny. You

  562. worship, listen to what Jesus said. You worship

  563. what you do not know. We worship what we know.

  564. I want to share with you something that might

  565. sound a little callous, but this is a huge point

  566. that Jesus is making. He was saying to the woman

  567. at the well that she was a worshiper, but her

  568. worship was not actually doing her any good.

  569. I want you to think that through for a moment.

  570. You worship what you do not know. Meaning you

  571. can come into this room today. You could have

  572. worshiped and sang those songs. But if you don't

  573. actually know Jesus on the inside, it doesn't

  574. mean that God doesn't honor the fact that you're

  575. trying to worship him. It means that your worship

  576. actually didn't go through to life to you or

  577. him. Think of that. You see, Jesus wasn't coming

  578. to a woman that had complete ignorance. Joseph,

  579. don't come down here. All right, Jesus wasn't

  580. coming to a woman that had complete ignorance.

  581. He was coming to someone who knew. She knew she

  582. had background of knowing that Messiah would

  583. come. You read the whole passage, read it over

  584. and over. You'll find that Jesus was dealing

  585. with something that she knew Messiah was on his

  586. way. She knew that God was going to give a gift.

  587. She worshiped on a mountain and she worshiped

  588. in a culture and she hid behind it. And Jesus

  589. said, because of that, you worship. And your

  590. worship is, you're truly trying to do something,

  591. but your worship isn't changing your life. Why?

  592. Because you don't know the gift. You only know

  593. it from a true perspective that you think you

  594. know who God is, but you haven't actually been

  595. introduced to who he really is. You worship what

  596. you don't know. My question is in the church,

  597. in this house this morning, how many people are

  598. walking in this room today that are actually

  599. worshiping God, desire to worship God, but because

  600. of cultural ramifications, because of the listening

  601. to the voice of the past, because of religious

  602. things that you thought that it was really a

  603. choice for you to make and you've said no to

  604. it, that has actually kept you from actually

  605. receiving living water. That worship becomes

  606. a ritual rather than life -giving. It's huge.

  607. And oftentimes we'll come to church services

  608. and we don't often get, and I'm not saying it's

  609. always right to just preach a message that just

  610. kind of pokes you in the eye. Sometimes you have

  611. to be encouraged. Amen? But sometimes you need

  612. actually a word of conviction that actually comes

  613. to break hardened mindsets and hardened hearts

  614. and religious traditions and say, what have I

  615. put in front of me? What have I allowed to frame

  616. it in that actually isn't Bible at all and that's

  617. keeping me from receiving the drinking of living

  618. water? That I wouldn't even ask for it. I didn't

  619. even know I had a need for it. You see, this

  620. Samaritan woman got so used to living with the

  621. routine of her life where she'd been ostracized

  622. from culture. Well, partly because she'd had

  623. five different husbands and the one she was with

  624. now wasn't her own. The ladies in the town weren't

  625. exactly thrilled to have to play bingo with her.

  626. She was a threat to every marriage. Then she

  627. wrapped herself in that mindset in addition to

  628. the Samaritan mindset of being mixed and now

  629. worshiping on Mount Ebal versus where the Jews

  630. had set the temple on Mount Moriah. And we're

  631. going to get into that next week, so stay tuned.

  632. Why was those two mountains So radically different.

  633. Why would they think that evil was the same as

  634. Moriah? It all comes back to tradition. It all

  635. comes back to how man tries to justify getting

  636. out of true obedience and worshiping something

  637. that's close. That's good enough. Jesus comes

  638. back. And his word saying. If you knew. If you

  639. knew. And notice what he says next in verse 23

  640. through 25. The hour is coming. And now is here.

  641. When true worshipers will worship the father

  642. in spirit. And truth. For the father is seeking

  643. such people to worship him. We hear this verse

  644. a lot. I quote this verse a lot. God is spirit.

  645. And those who worship him. Must. Can we say that

  646. word together? Must. Worship him in spirit and

  647. in truth. I need you to just drill down with

  648. me for a second. And then we're going to pray.

  649. The time of just worshiping around truth and

  650. truth alone, I say this carefully, had already

  651. been passing from the scene. Truth without spirit

  652. passed from the scene because of Jesus' life.

  653. The truth that would emerge was the truth that

  654. was Spirit filled and covered. What was he saying?

  655. He's saying just having the law, having the truth

  656. alone does not lead to life. The father's not

  657. looking for those just to live by the letter

  658. of the law. He's now looking for those that will

  659. take the truth and have the spirit of truth in

  660. it. Because the spirit of truth comes also from

  661. the Father. His name is what? And this is Jesus'

  662. big introduction. His name is Holy Spirit. And

  663. Jesus gets further into that. He's only in John

  664. 4. When he gets to John 14 and he gets to John

  665. 16, he introduces, and I will send the spirit

  666. of what? Truth. So what was Jesus doing? Jesus

  667. was setting the stage, Chris, right in the beginning

  668. with this doctrinal understanding with a Samaritan

  669. woman that had lived outside the boundaries of

  670. everything that was real truth. And yet under

  671. the culture and the idea that she was giving

  672. God her best, he was saying, listen, if you're

  673. going to worship God, you now have to operate

  674. in both spheres of truth. You have to operate

  675. in the truth of his word. And you have to operate

  676. in the fullness of his spirit. Now that doesn't

  677. mean that you're going to have that. It means

  678. that you have to desire the spirit of truth.

  679. And you have to desire both spirit and truth.

  680. Because if they are the spirit of truth. It highlights

  681. the truth of the word. And it highlights everything

  682. that God is in the spirit. And God says. I'm

  683. looking for that now. And if you're going to

  684. come to worship me, you actually must worship

  685. in those two realms, in spirit and in truth.

  686. That word is a huge dividing word, even now in

  687. the body of Christ. It divides. Why? Because

  688. some people want to just worship around truth

  689. alone. The black and white of it, that's what

  690. it is. If I don't understand it, it doesn't matter.

  691. I just stick with what I know. Well, no, he wants

  692. you to worship. Worship means what? You got to

  693. get vulnerable. The system of being detached

  694. was an Old Testament system. You brought your

  695. offering to the priest and you walked away. It

  696. was a detached offering of just truth. Now, the

  697. system of worship that God is asking of us is

  698. not detached. It means I bring my life as obedience.

  699. That's why Paul says in Romans 12, 1 and 2, I

  700. present myself as a living sacrifice, holy and

  701. acceptable to God, which is my reasonable service

  702. of worship. That's the first part of truth. Bringing

  703. what? I bring myself. The next part of worshiping

  704. in spirit and truth is that I now minister in

  705. vulnerability to the Lord with everything that's

  706. in me and I allow his spirit to awaken me to

  707. areas where I'm not aligned, awaken me to areas...

  708. That aren't actually in the truth. Clean out

  709. of me places of mixture. Remove from me. And

  710. then move into freedom. That living water would

  711. actually satisfy me. And that I would want more.

  712. That's what the father is after. You see. And

  713. I'll end with this. Pastor Scott if you'd come.

  714. In the Old Testament. scriptures. At a young

  715. age, a lamb was considered a year old and less.

  716. After a year old, you weren't considered a lamb

  717. anymore. You were considered a sheep. Okay, whether

  718. you were a ram or a ewe, the reality is a lamb

  719. had a year basis to it. In Old Testament law,

  720. under the law of Moses, you could bring a kid

  721. goat. A kid goat is what? A year or less, I'll

  722. say the full of a goat that's called a kid. In

  723. the sacrificial system, you could offer a lamb

  724. or a kid. They were exchangeable. But the minute

  725. you move past the year lamb or a kid, you became

  726. categorized as either a sheep or a goat. Why?

  727. Because the nature of what was in that animal

  728. would begin to be seen and begin to manifest.

  729. That's why the Bible would always call the people.

  730. He says, you are the sheep of my pasture. Notice

  731. he doesn't say, you are the goats of my pasture.

  732. But shepherds shepherded both sheep and goats.

  733. But we were, anybody that was of the Lord was

  734. always required to do what? They were always

  735. said, my sheep hear my voice. The sheep knows

  736. the shepherd's voice. Why? Because a goat, a

  737. sheep's nature is what? A sheep's nature is to

  738. follow the shepherd even when they were going

  739. somewhere else. The voice and the counsel and

  740. the appearance or the physicality of the shepherd,

  741. the sheep change direction to follow the shepherd.

  742. That's the nature of a sheep. What's the nature

  743. of a goat? I don't ever tell you to go to YouTube

  744. or TikTok. Most of the time, I tell you don't

  745. go there. But just look up goat experiences.

  746. And you will find that even the most wonderful

  747. goats that the shepherd has fed and watered and

  748. they just had as soon as they turned their back,

  749. boom! Pulled some. Okay. What do they do? The

  750. budding nature. Means I'll follow when I want

  751. to follow, how I want to follow, and you won't

  752. tell me and I will not be able to be relied on.

  753. That's why Jesus said at the end of the age,

  754. he will do what? He will separate the sheep from

  755. the goats. It'll be the nature of who truly want

  756. to follow the Lord in the fullness, allowing

  757. the mixture out of their life, following the

  758. shepherd and pursuing him versus he'll get what

  759. he gets and I'll decide when I'll follow and

  760. when I want. You see, that's what Jesus was trying

  761. to take out of the Samaritan woman. Not only

  762. was he trying to redo her mindset, That had been

  763. framed by her mistakes and her behavior. That

  764. was just one of the issues. He was removing the

  765. mindset. That the mountain that she was worshiping

  766. on. Was equal to what God said needed to be pursued.

  767. And that's what the Lord is doing. In his house

  768. right now. Is he is cleansing the mixture. Allowing

  769. people to embrace what? The real word of God.

  770. Not just what you think. The real word of God.

  771. There are scriptures that we are actually supposed

  772. to believe and adhere to while we pursue the

  773. Holy Spirit. It is the scriptures that keep us

  774. in the purity of pursuing the Holy Spirit. You

  775. cannot trade truth for spirit. You cannot trade

  776. spirit for truth. You must have them both. Why?

  777. because John explained it best in his opening

  778. salvo as I'm closing in the gospel of John chapter

    John 1:14

  779. 1 verse 14 and you know the beginning salvo says

  780. in the beginning was the word and the word was

  781. God and the word was with God and the word was

  782. made flesh and right before 14 he says and we

  783. beheld him the only begotten son of God who came

  784. in the flesh we saw his glory for he was what

  785. filled with Grace and truth. Grace is the spirit.

  786. Truth is always the truth. They're both truth

  787. in God. Jesus operated in both. And as he moved

  788. forward in the gospels right from the beginning,

  789. he would constantly reveal that you needed God

  790. as the gift and you needed the Holy Spirit that

  791. was the part of that truth gift. and they were

  792. to be yours to be embraced and received because

  793. it would make, it would cause you to know the

  794. giver of the gift. Would you bow your heads and

  795. your hearts this morning? If you're here this

  796. morning and you have not, experienced the knowing

  797. of the gift of Jesus Christ. I'm not talking

  798. about knowing him from a distance. I'm not talking

  799. about knowledge. I'm talking about having an

  800. encounter with Jesus Christ himself that would

  801. put that administration of his grace and of his

  802. spirit on the inside of you. If you have not

  803. known him by his holy word this morning, he is

  804. here in spirit. to draw you to himself. He stands

  805. before you just like he stood before the Samaritan

  806. woman. He said, if you knew who it was that was

  807. speaking to you, if you would ask, I will give

  808. you living water. He comes today with the gift

  809. of himself to give to you if you'll ask. But

  810. that asking means that I have to recognize that

  811. what I have has kept me really from experiencing

  812. him. And I'm willing to trade it. I'm willing

  813. to lay it down and say, Jesus, forgive me for

  814. putting all the excuses and the boundaries around

  815. you. I come to you plainly. I come to you out

  816. of my own free will and I'm asking you to come

  817. live inside of my life. If that's you. I'm asking

  818. you, I'll send somebody right to you right now.

  819. Just lift your hand and we'll help you. We'll

  820. pray that prayer and we will watch God actually

  821. give you a drink of living water. If that's you

  822. this morning, you say, yeah, that's me. I want

  823. to receive him. I don't, I've only known him

  824. at a distance. I've not been able to drink deeply

  825. from life. I've only known ritual and religion

  826. and mixture. And as you're thinking about that,

  827. you can raise your hand at any time. I'll send

  828. somebody to you. I want to speak to those that

  829. you know that God is dealing with the mixture

  830. right now. Mindsets that have kept your heart

  831. guarded. Mindsets that have kept you from fully

  832. trusting God. Fully giving yourself in worship.

  833. to him. If that's you this morning, you say,

  834. yeah, Lord, I need you to help me. Direct me

  835. back to have an encounter with you. If that's

  836. you, would you just be so bold just to lift your

  837. hand and say, yeah, pray for me. Yeah, thank

  838. you. Thank you. Come on, just lift them up. I'm

  839. not going to call you forward, but I am going

  840. to ask you to respond in the presence of the

  841. Lord saying, Jesus, that's me. I need more of

  842. your spirit. I need to be free. I need to let

  843. go. Help me now. Remove the mixture. Let me know

  844. the truth and let me understand the Holy Spirit.

  845. Father, you see every hand that's lifted even

  846. now. And Lord, every decision that's being made,

  847. I ask Holy Spirit. that you would come to them.

  848. Lord, touching their mind, touching their heart,

  849. unravel from them, Lord, the justifications and
