  1. Welcome, Welcome to Venture Church. If you don't know who

  2. I am, I am Brandon. I'm the lead pastor of

  3. the church. Glad that you have chosen to join us

  4. here on what I am calling the first day of

  5. our next twenty years. But you're a part of it.

  6. I want to just express my gratitude on behalf of

  7. Di and I to all of you. We felt so

  8. loved as we celebrated our twentieth birthday. We really do

  9. appreciate how much love you guys showed.

  10. Also to our kids.

  11. It was a great time celebrating everything that God has done.

  12. We had put together a committee that Nicole Butcher very

  13. faithfully led that has been meeting for about a year,

  14. and what they wanted to do is really honor the

  15. people and honor the stories that really told the Venture journey.

  16. And I think they did an amazing job. And I'm

  17. so thankful for everything that God has done. When I

  18. look back at this journey, I just am filled with joy.

  19. Probably the number one thing that I pray is I

  20. thank God for allowing me to be able to be

  21. a part of it, because it's been really fun to

  22. witness all of it. All that to say, I desperately

  23. do not want us to be a church that is

  24. one of those churches that only talks about their past,

  25. that only talks about remember this person in the past,

  26. Remember when this thing happened in the past. What I

  27. really feel compelled to challenge all of us here today

  28. with is let's put a period on that chapter of

  29. everything that God has done, and let's begin to look

  30. ahead to what He's going to do next. I want

  31. to ask everyone to close your eyes. I want to

  32. pray for you, Lord Jesus in the next several moments

  33. as I share my heart. Lord, I asked that you

  34. would speak through me. More than anything, Lord, I need

  35. your help. I want to pray that I'm able to

  36. convey your words to these people in the greatest way possible. God,

  37. I thank you for everything that's brought venture to this.

  38. Moment right here. But Lord, we.

  39. Anticipate and are excited about the moment that is going

  40. to come. We commit it to you and Jesus, I

  41. humbly ask you to help me in your name, I pray.

  42. Amen.

  43. My wife and I are gonna head out for a

  44. four day vacation. We leave after church and I'll sit

  45. on an airplane and in all likelihood someone is gonna

  46. ask me about my tattoos. I always get asked about

  47. my tattoos. This is not me endorsing tattoos. This is

  48. not me suggesting you should get a tattoo. Kids, This

  49. is not the pastor of the church telling your parents

  50. they should let you get a tattoo.

  51. So this is not me doing that. But my tattoos.

  52. I'm quick to tell everyone they share my spiritual journey

  53. that these are my spiritual mile markers that whenever God

  54. does something really significant in my life, I want to

  55. remember it. Because I'm not a big journaler, I journal

  56. on my body, and so I have a these tattoos.

  57. They tell the story of everything that Jesus has done. Specifically,

  58. it's now turning into a full sleeve, but I had

  59. a half sleeve for a while. That reminded me of

  60. probably the biggest thing that the Lord helped me overcome

  61. in the first say ten years of venture. Everything that

  62. God has done at venture is really ironic when you

  63. view it through the lens of who is one of

  64. the leaders that God chose to use. Because I am,

  65. by my nature a very fearful person, I struggle with

  66. fear and now I didn't really how fear began to

  67. manifest itself in me, and it began to manifest itself

  68. for years in anxiety, and I didn't know I had

  69. really bad anxiety until about six years ago. I could

  70. never really define how I was feeling and different things

  71. like that until my anxiety was so bad in one

  72. moment that I got rushed to the emergency room because

  73. they thought I was having a stroke. And these tattoos

  74. on my upper arm, they symbolize the opposite of fear,

  75. and it's one of.

  76. My core values, which is courage.

  77. And I define courage for me as the willingness to

  78. do something that I'm afraid to do. And when you're

  79. a fearful person who struggles with anxiety, that is a

  80. lot of things. It's crazy when you think about the

  81. fact that God told Die and I when we were

  82. in Modesto to plant a church because I'm fearful and

  83. I'm also good at math, which means I can do statistical.

  84. Analysis of things.

  85. And I knew that seventy five percent of church plants

  86. died within their first three years, but God said, years later,

  87. we've survived, and we've made it to year twelve, and

  88. then God says the next big thing, which is plant

  89. your flag in the city of Mill Creek. I want

  90. you to build a hub, flagship campus.

  91. Planting a church.

  92. Is the most difficult thing that any minister can do.

  93. It is the equivalent of trying to start a business

  94. with no money and no product that you are producing

  95. and selling like it doesn't make any sense. It is

  96. the hardest thing a minister will ever do. The second

  97. hardest thing that any minister will ever.

  98. Do is to build a building from dirt.

  99. Here's the stat on building programs. Eighty percent of ministers

  100. resign their church after their building has been built and opened.

  101. They resign within one year because of everything it takes

  102. to build that building, raise that money, and do all

  103. of that. Ministers quit when God says, Brandon, it's time

  104. for you to build a building from dirt. I am

  105. like Jesus. I struggle with anxiety. I want people to

  106. like me. People do not like fundraising campaigns. In addition, Lord,

  107. what if it doesn't work? And when you struggle with fear,

  108. that's what you say, what if it doesn't work? And

  109. then I always come back to you. But God called

  110. me to live a courageous life, which means if I'm

  111. afraid to do something, I must do that something. So

  112. you just put one step in front of another and

  113. you do it. When Di and I in a group

  114. of people in Modesto dreamt a venture church, we never

  115. imagine that this is what it was going to be.

  116. If we knew this was the end result, every single

  117. one of us would have signed up for it without

  118. thinking twice.

  119. But I'll also tell you this.

  120. That if when God said move back to Seattle and

  121. plant to church, if he would have said the twenty years,

  122. those first twenty years, you were gonna fight so many wars,

  123. so many battles. You're gonna have victories, but so many defeats.

  124. You're gonna have wins, but so many losses. There's gonna

  125. be so many people that you thought were your friends

  126. who are going to say just horrible things about you.

  127. You're gonna have all of these bad things happen along

  128. the way, and all of these challenges along the way.

  129. I'm gonna be blunt. If God would have told me.

  130. The cost to get here I struggle with fear, I

  131. never would have done it.

  132. I think that's the way that the Lord works in

  133. our life.

  134. Like when God tells us something, he usually tells us

  135. what's next and to take a step. Doesn't maybe gives

  136. us a glimpse of the future, but he doesn't tell

  137. us about the journey because the journey is not a

  138. straight line. God kind of withholds all of that because

  139. he knows, as humans, at any moment, we're willing to

  140. bail along the process and quit, So he doesn't tell

  141. us everything we're going to go through.

  142. He just promises that it'll be.

  143. With us, and he just tells us to take the

  144. next step. Now, looking back at twenty years, I can

  145. tell you wins, defeats, victories, losses. I would do it

  146. all over again to see what I've seen now that

  147. I've seen the whole thing, and I was praying about

  148. this first twenty year thing. This is the verse that

  149. the Lord laid on my heart, Zechariah four to ten.

  150. I didn't know when the Lord laid this on my

  151. heart if this was supposed to be encouraging or discouraging. Says,

  152. do not despise small beginnings. This is small, like I

  153. thought small was. When I was meeting in the office space,

  154. we didn't have chairs and people were sitting on the floor.

  155. What was that Microscopic says, do not despise these small beginnings,

  156. for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin. I

  157. wrestled with that for a while until I underunderstood what

  158. God was saying to venture, that this is only the beginning,

  159. that what we've seen so far, this is just the

  160. foundation being laid. These are the work that had had

  161. to be built and had to be done so that

  162. God could do what he really wants to do through

  163. this place.

  164. When you look around and you.

  165. Think of this is just the foundation, what is he

  166. going to do next?

  167. When we.

  168. Built this building, we gotten the loan approved. I would

  169. tell everyone this as I was raising the money. I

  170. would say, there's going to come a day twenty years

  171. from now, you're going to drive down thirty fifth.

  172. You know, we know if you live in Mill Creek.

  173. Thirty fifth both Leverett Highway, they're the two main drags

  174. through Mill Creek. I said, there's gonna come a day

  175. people are gonna drive down thirty fifth.

  176. They're gonna drive by all these two.

  177. Million dollar homes in one of the wealthiest areas in

  178. western Washington, and they are gonna drive by this church building,

  179. and they're gonna point at it and they're gonna say,

  180. how did this ever get built?

  181. How did they ever do that?

  182. And then I told you that there's gonna come a

  183. day you're gonna be the person they're gonna ask that

  184. question too, and you're gonna say, let me tell you.

  185. What God did.

  186. I mean, it was impossible. We fought all of Hell.

  187. It was like everything that could go.

  188. Wrong went wrong, But God did this. I remember the day.

  189. This stage was about to be built, we had.

  190. A worship service in here.

  191. I mean, it was just kind of a prayer time,

  192. and I knelt down where I knew my pulpit would be,

  193. and I laid hands on it, and I just begin

  194. to speak and prophesy. I begin to say things like, Lord,

  195. the words that are spoken from this spot, I pray

  196. they'll penetrate the hearts of people. God.

  197. I pray that.

  198. Whenever a call for people to find Jesus is given

  199. from this moment, that there will never be a time

  200. that not at least one hand is raised.

  201. God.

  202. I pray that people's husbands and wives will find you,

  203. that their kids will find you, their friends, their neighbors

  204. will find you. And I wrote literally underneath this spot

  205. Joshua fourteen twelve, and Joshua fourteen twelve was our rally

  206. and cry as we went to build this building. This

  207. is what we told everybody. I think you guys have

  208. the verse. I'll read it from you, guys. He says,

  209. give me that mountain that you promised me that day.

  210. Those were words spoken by an eighty five.

  211. Year old Caleb. He remembered the first time.

  212. That he'd stood on that mountain and he'd looked out

  213. at it. That was the land that God had promised

  214. the people of Israel. They got on the cuff of

  215. entering into the promised land. They sent in spies to

  216. the promised land. When those spies came back, this was

  217. the report they gave. They told Moses and all the

  218. leaders of Israel.

  219. They said, we can't do it.

  220. The city is too large, it's too fortified, the people

  221. are too strong. In fact, the direct quote in scripture

  222. is this, we looked like grasshoppers in their eyes, and in.

  223. Fact that's the way we felt, too.

  224. And so they refused to go into this land that

  225. God promised, and as a result, an entire generation died

  226. and passed away.

  227. And now there's new leadership.

  228. Joshua and Caleb is the only one that's still alive that.

  229. Went into that land and saw it. And now he's

  230. eighty five.

  231. This eighty five year old man comes to that point

  232. again and he says.

  233. There it is that is the dream, that is what

  234. I've been holding on to. This time.

  235. We aren't gonna chicken out this time.

  236. God is gonna give us that mountain that he promised

  237. us on that day.

  238. And that that is the words that are written right

  239. underneath this spot. When I walk out of my office,

  240. that is right there. I walk through this hallway back

  241. here to come on the platform to preach, and the

  242. last picture that I see is this one that has

  243. popped up here, and this is the picture where I

  244. wrote this.

  245. And every time I walk by that, I remember.

  246. That when a group of people are willing to overcome

  247. their fear, that when a group of people are willing

  248. to live fearless, courageous lives, unbelievable things can happen. When

  249. we started the church, when we came together to build

  250. this building, you were our dream. We dreamt that this

  251. place would be full, over and over and over again.

  252. This was our dream. Let me describe last week. This

  253. puts it in context. Remember, we were at church without

  254. a home for sixteen years. We were like the Israelites

  255. wandering in the wilderness. We were nomads. We would plant

  256. our tent for a while, we would destroy that land,

  257. and then we would pick and we would move somewhere else.

  258. But we were homeless for sixteen years.

  259. Last week, to give you an idea, Monday, we do

  260. a dinner for free for people in this region that

  261. are going through recovery.

  262. While that is going on.

  263. In our parking lot, they're giving away anywhere from five

  264. hundred to seven hundred and fifty bags of groceries. We

  265. do that every Monday afternoon to people in our community

  266. who need food. Then Tuesday rolls around and we serve

  267. another free dinner to the community in North Everett.

  268. And then on Wednesday, this place is packed.

  269. There's a bunch of adults in here practicing for our

  270. Christmas concert choir. While that is happening, the youth are

  271. obnoxiously loud in the hub. There's people meeting in classrooms

  272. that are makeshift classrooms all around this building, learning the

  273. Bible and growing in their faith. While all that is

  274. going on, there's a full kids ministry happening that is

  275. Wednesday night. On Thursday night, the Ukrainian Church that's a

  276. part of us has a large gathering that takes place

  277. here on Thursday night. Then the weekend comes and we

  278. have our twentieth birthday party.

  279. Then we lead up to a dinner. Sunday night.

  280. Four hundred people were given a free dinner because sixty

  281. more people showed up than it registered.

  282. That's why we ran out of food. Register next time.

  283. If you were here, how many of you were here

  284. Sunday night, just raise your hand. I'm not going to

  285. ask how many of you forgot.

  286. A register, but.

  287. You remember what this place looked like after Sunday night.

  288. How many of you were thankful you got to go home?

  289. Did you notice that it's not a mess in here anymore?

  290. Somebody came in and cleaned all of this up, So

  291. that was the staff too. Then. Oh, by the way,

  292. I also forgot to mention that we also did drunk

  293. or treat and God decided. This is in the midst

  294. of all this that God decided to illustrate what we'd

  295. been teaching on Sunday about the flood by bringing the

  296. worst weather ever on trunk or treat and still two

  297. thousand sopping wet children showed up at trunk or Treat.

  298. We're only into a week.

  299. Yesterday we had a big wedding because our kids pastor

  300. got married yesterday. Not bad for a bunch of wandering nomads,

  301. is it? What?

  302. That's what's happened.

  303. Since God allowed us to build this building like that's

  304. the typical week in the lives of venture.

  305. I was on my sabbatical.

  306. And people have asked me over and over again, pebe,

  307. what did God speak to you.

  308. On your sabbatical.

  309. You've all hated the answer because I said nothing.

  310. I just had fun. No, no, no, surely he said something

  311. to you. No. I didn't pray the entire time I

  312. was on my sabbatical. Not just kidding. The Lord did

  313. speak one thing to me, and I'm now sharing it.

  314. I wrestled with it because I didn't want to do it.

  315. But the one thing that the Lord said to me

  316. was once you get back, it's time to expand the facility.

  317. I wrestled with that one. But this incredible building.

  318. Is packed.

  319. We need kids space, we need classroom space, we need

  320. office space, we need more space in the auditorium. I

  321. knew this day was coming. I want to share with

  322. you the verse that God spoke to me about our

  323. next twenty years. It's a verse in Ephesians. I quoted

  324. it last week. It's Ephesians three twenty. So when you

  325. put into contexts that this is just the beginning, the

  326. small beginning, that this is the foundation with which God

  327. now wants to build on. I'm speaking this prophetically over

  328. you now, to him who is able to do immeasurably.

  329. I'm a math guy.

  330. If something is immeasurable, it means you can't measure it.

  331. To Him who is able to do immeasurably more.

  332. Then you were able to ask.

  333. And it's Christmas time coming. Your kids are already starting.

  334. To ask you for what they want.

  335. Have you noticed that we don't normally have a problem asking,

  336. But God is able to do immeasurably more than you

  337. ask or imagine? How many of you have a big imagination.

  338. God's words said that He can do more, immeasurably more

  339. then you or I ask or can even imagine, according

  340. to His power that is at work within us. Everything

  341. you've seen, and by the way, if you missed the

  342. documentary that we showed Sunday night. Brandon Greenwal, our media

  343. creative director, did just an amazing job compiling all this

  344. archived footage and pictures and in a narrative story as

  345. best he could, shared the twenty year story of Venture.

  346. You can go on any.

  347. Of our staff's Facebook pages and you can see that

  348. YouTube link and you can watch that and it will

  349. remind you of everything that got us to this point.

  350. But we are putting a period on that chapter. We

  351. are beginning to write the next chapter. And just as

  352. a group of people had to seed into this church

  353. so that it could get launched, just as a group

  354. of people had to seed into this church so that

  355. this building could get built, we are gonna need a

  356. group of people to seed into our next twenty years.

  357. I share this every time I do one oh one.

  358. I say, you are reaping the benefits of seeding and

  359. giving that was done by people that you've never met.

  360. I said, But there's gonna come a time you were

  361. going to get an opportunity to seed into the future.

  362. And this is that moment, just a moment I my

  363. worship team to come back out. They are going to

  364. prophetically sing a worship song over you and your family.

  365. And as they do that, the ushers are gonna come

  366. and they are gonna give you two cards. And we

  367. had decided when I shared with the staff, that our

  368. fundraising was gonna be all of twenty twenty five. Now

  369. here's the cool part. All the plans that we're moving

  370. forward with to expand this facility. The cost is four

  371. point five million dollars.

  372. Because of the growth of.

  373. The church in our current financial situation, we already have

  374. access to three million of it, so we have.

  375. A delta or a.

  376. Shortfall of one point five million dollars. We had decided

  377. that we were going to take all of twenty twenty

  378. five and raise one point five million dollars, which, by.

  379. The way, totally doable. Totally doable. That was the plan.

  380. We were going to talk about it in January.

  381. Have a year to raise the money.

  382. Here's the anxious part about taking an entire year to

  383. be in a fundraising campaign, because that's what you talk

  384. about for a year, and as much as you try

  385. to keep everybody on mission, you're constantly talking about the

  386. fundraising campaign. And us disappointed about that, but it's a

  387. practical reality.

  388. Of what we knew we were going to have to do.

  389. We had a seminar that our church was hosting from

  390. a pastor in Minnesota. The place was full of ministers

  391. from around the region, and it was during this that

  392. the Holy Spirit spoke to our leadership team at our

  393. church that we didn't want to take all of twenty

  394. twenty five focusing on fundraising and shifting off mission, but

  395. that we were going to try to do something that

  396. seems way out of possibility, like that seems so ridiculous

  397. that if it happened, only God could have done it.

  398. And we decided that we were going to take a

  399. miracle offering in December and see if the Holy Spirit

  400. would move upon the people in our church to give

  401. and give generously so that we have all of the

  402. resources that we need to expand this facility, and we

  403. have them before twenty twenty five rolls around. I want

  404. you to imagine, if we come together and give a

  405. million and a half dollars in an offering, we have

  406. all the resources we need to expand this facility, kids ministry,

  407. classroom space, auditorium space, better office space.

  408. The only thing that I can't increase is the parking lot.

  409. Maybe another shuttle.

  410. I don't know, but I begin to imagine what if

  411. we could do that? And then all of twenty twenty

  412. five gets to be focused on the mission of Jesus

  413. building his kingdom. All of twenty twenty five we got

  414. to be encouraged because right after Easter we break.

  415. Ground on the expansion.

  416. I mean, our dream would be, could it be that

  417. if we raise all this money that we have by

  418. the end of twenty twenty five a fully expanded building,

  419. that we.

  420. Get to see it happen? Could that happen?

  421. So I shared that dream with the staff, and the

  422. staff got excited about it. Christian, who leads the staff,

  423. looked at the staff and said that means you're gonna

  424. have to lead the way. So I shared this with

  425. my elder board, and I said, what do you guys think?

  426. Is this too big of a stretch? And my elder board.

  427. Bunch of math guys.

  428. They started doing the math, and one of them said, well,

  429. if one hundred families give fifteen thousand dollars.

  430. We've done it.

  431. If maybe, and then someone else said, well, if two

  432. families give one hundred and fifty thousand, and these give

  433. fifty thousand, and then this and that and everybody does something,

  434. we can do that.

  435. One of my board members said.

  436. Pastor Brandon, we need to share with you what our

  437. pledges are before you share this with the church. So

  438. before we've even officially announced this, between the board and

  439. the pastors, we already know that at least two hundred

  440. thousand dollars is coming in in this offering.

  441. But now it's your chance.

  442. This would be a miracle that we would have to

  443. trust Jesus with and do together. You're going to get

  444. handed two cards, and on the back of the one

  445. that says writing our next chapter, it says, this is

  446. my plan. This is my vision, this is my dream.

  447. By the way, we are not receiving pledge cards back.

  448. This is between you and Jesus.

  449. But I do want to challenge you to think through

  450. this process that this is my plan.

  451. What I mean by that, this is what I.

  452. Know I can do, that my family can do this

  453. by December. Maybe your plan reasonably, Maybe you're thinking I

  454. can be one of those fifteen thousand. It'll be a stretch,

  455. it's gonna mean things are gonna be tight, but we

  456. could do fifteen thousand.

  457. But then the next category is.

  458. This is my vision, and the vision is well, if

  459. some other things fall into place.

  460. If Tesla keeps shooting through the roof in my stock portfolio.

  461. If something happens, well, maybe we could give this instead.

  462. Maybe fifteen thousand is my plan, but maybe we could

  463. give twenty thousand. If this contract comes in, this sale

  464. comes in, this bonus comes in. But then the final

  465. one is this is my dream and my challenge is

  466. every one of you here come up with a dream.

  467. This is where you are testing Jesus. Here's what the

  468. dream is. We all know that all the resources that

  469. we need.

  470. Are in God's hands, right, that.

  471. He has the abundance of the universe and the plum

  472. of his hands.

  473. The dream is you saying, Lord. I don't know how

  474. this would happen. I don't know if.

  475. It's possible, but I think it would be really cool

  476. if our family could give this. So, Lord, I'm asking

  477. that you would take some of what is easily in

  478. your hands.

  479. I don't know how you will do it.

  480. I don't know what miracle is going to fall into

  481. my lap, but I'm asking that you would take some

  482. of what is in your hands and place it in

  483. my hands and give me the opportunity to be obedient

  484. with it. This is you saying, God, I'm believing. I

  485. don't know how it will happen, but my dream is

  486. that we could give fifty thousand dollars.

  487. It doesn't make any sense in.

  488. It is so far beyond what my plan says I

  489. can afford.

  490. This would only be a miracle. But if you deposit

  491. those funds.

  492. In my hands, I'll be obedient with it and release it.

  493. One of the things that I'm excited about is I'm

  494. excited for some of you to learn this spiritual lesson.

  495. In the next month.

  496. You are gonna see when you ask God for something,

  497. He's able to do immeasurably more than you ask.

  498. Or imagine.

  499. Many of you, you weren't given the privilege of seeding

  500. into this building so that it would be built. Now

  501. you're getting the privilege of seeding into the building so

  502. that it can be expanded for the next twenty years.

  503. So I'm gonna pray for you. The worship team is

  504. gonna sing a song over you, and the ushers are

  505. gonna come and they're gonna hand out these cards. Lord Jesus,

  506. all I ask is that everyone here would participate. If

  507. it's a dollar, if it's one hundred, thousand dollars, that

  508. everyone would participate in God, that together we would see

  509. the most extraordinary miracle that we have yet to see.

  510. As a church, I claim it in Jesus' name.

  511. Amen,
