“Christianity Is More We Than Me” by Lisa Harper

And so I have really, really that's my cousin.

Happy July the 4th, it feels like today.

Um, I wore leather pants, so I will be sweating tonight.

My apologies.

Um I I flew in this afternoon to DFW and I didn't ask her if I could do this, but Grace with American Airlines, will you stand up?

Where's Grace?

Grace.

Okay.

Missy and I were walking out.

Well, come here, baby.

If you've got a rear-end that small, it needs to be on the screen.

Gosh.

We were walking outside of DFW and I hear this beautiful young pumpkin go, Miss Lisa.

And I turned around expecting somebody to be like selling me candy.

And it was Grace, who looks like she's 12, but she's actually a big shot with American Airlines.

So if you need some more miles, go to Grace.

But she said, she said, I'm so excited you're here.

I'll see you at church this afternoon.

And I thought, that's just, that's just family.

And Grace, you had no idea that I needed an illustration for a quote I have from a dead guy I have a crush on.

His name is Henry Nowen, one of my favorite recent theologians.

And Henry Nowen said this: everyone who returns from a long and difficult trip, anytime you're flying into DFW, it can be difficult, is looking for someone waiting for him at the station or airport.

Everyone wants to tell their story and share their moments of pain and exhilaration with someone who stayed home, waiting for them to come back.

We all desperately long to be seen and to be celebrated.

That beautiful young woman had no idea what it did for my spirit to have someone in a giant impersonal airport go, Hi, Miss Lisa.

And I thought, my goodness, that's what we're talking about for the next few weeks.

How many of y'all wear Apple watches?

Alright, I've got a bone to pick with you.

I'm not anti-Apple.

As a matter of fact, I so wish I had bought stock 20 years ago.

But I think our culture is getting uh increasingly, shall we say, um uh deficit in making eye contact because we're all looking at our wrists and our phones.

And so I want us to have a little uh body exercise before we dive into this love letter we call the Bible.

I want you to take the next 30 seconds, and you don't have to hug anybody if you're not a hugger, um, which means you're also not a believer.

But no, that's just me.

You don't have to hug anybody.

I don't want you to be insincere.

Stay within the context of that beautiful personality God has given you.

But would you take 30 or 45 seconds to find someone around you whom you have not yet met, find out their name, and then will you, as authentically as you can, do what Grace did for me this afternoon and say, sure is good to see you.

You got forty-five seconds, be the body.

Well, you know, my baby is Haitian, so I'm always drawn to braids.

I normally have her in box braids for protective this time of year.

Hills and valleys.

There's always some hills and valleys.

Well, hey, beautiful.

What you're doing.

I'm in great man.

Your parents did a good job.

All right, I want to ask you something about that saint you just met.

And uh and this is rhetorical, you don't have to answer back.

Can you remember three details about them?

Can you remember the color of their eyes?

Can you remember what they were wearing?

Can you remember if they smelled good or were a little ripe?

Maybe they came straight for the softball field.

Y'all, what we just did may initially seem superficial or personality driven, but I would venture to say it's the holiest thing we do all week.

Because we are quite literally called to community.

It's not based on our personality, it's not based on our Enneagram number, it's based on our Heavenly Father.

If you brought your Bible, turn to Genesis chapter 1.

Genesis 1 · chapter mention

From the very beginning, most of us know that Paul talks a lot about community in the New Testament.

Some of us don't realize that it's actually a sweeping biblical theme to be in community.

Genesis chapter 1, verses 26 and 27.

Genesis 1:26

Then God said, Let us, if you're comfortable writing in your Bible, and I've talked to y'all about this before, but I'm a huge fan of brick and mortar Bibles.

Um, if you don't have a brick and mortar Bible, please see somebody after this service.

And it doesn't make them holier.

Just because the Bible's bound by leather does not make it better.

It's just God made us tactile people.

And if you are over 11, there will be seasons in your life that are tough.

And I can promise you, sleeping with an iPad will do nothing for you.

But when you can flip through a Bible and go to pages that you wrote on, I don't even prefer this translation anymore.

I just love this particular Bible because my dad wrote in it before he died.

I'm telling you, we need brick and mortar Bibles back in the house of God.

One of the reasons isolation and loneliness permeates our culture as we are, by and large, biblically illiterate and we get God's word through Instagram.

I'm telling you, this will drive you to community.

God is an us.

If you have a brick and mortar Bible, circle that fifth word in from that promise.

Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

So God created man in his own image.

And by the way, that's a gender-inclusive term.

It means all of us.

In the image of God, he created him, male and female, he created them.

So from the get-go, Scripture reveals that you and I were made in the image of a holy God who is a perfect community unto himself.

Holy Spirit didn't just come on the scene in Acts chapter 2 with all the drama and the flames, as much as Pentecostals we like to claim, Acts chapter 2, but that's just his New Testament debutante party.

The very beginning of Genesis shows Holy Spirit hovering over the darkness.

Jesus is there at the very beginning.

Augustine, one of my other favorite pretend theological boyfriends, only he's really old.

Augustine says this only the Christian God exists in a perfect community unto himself.

And he makes it very clear that we were made in his likeness.

Some of y'all have the tattoo, Imago Day.

Comes from that passage right there.

Latin for image of God.

A friend of mine showed me her tattoo.

She's a lot younger than me.

She has tight skin and high metabolism.

And she didn't capitalize the D in that tat.

And if it's Imago little D, you could just be the image of an amoeba.

Make sure if you're getting that tattoo, you capitalize the D.

That's God, capital D.

Some of y'all don't just Google if you're getting a tat.

Go to like Pastor Matthew and say, is this correct Hebrew?

Some of y'all have like the bread of, you know, lean cuisine.

I'm like, please, please ask Dr.

Fambro, go somewhere to somebody who knows the Greek and Hebrew.

Imago day is theological concept that comes from Genesis 1, 26 and 27.

You and I were made in the image of God.

In other words, we were hardwired for community, the same way he's in community.

We have a Trinitarian God.

And he said, I made you in that image.

You are made, whether it's playing softball or quilting or going to Weight Watchers, you were made to be in a community.

I loved watching Rebecca and Kieran up here on the worship team because we traveled together for years with a group called Women of Faith.

And Women of Faith, uh they started right here in Dallas.

Company, they don't exist anymore the way we were part of it, but it was a, I used to call it estrogen festivals.

We would um have these faith-based women's events all over the country in big arenas.

And it was amazing because women would come to those who wouldn't darken the door of a church.

They'd be nervous about going to church, maybe they they smelled like cigarettes or they wore leather pants, but they would come to an arena knowing, well, I can just check out if this gets a little weird, and they'd get their pretzel and they'd get their Diet Coke and they'd hear the gospel.

And it was kind of like a girls' Billy Graham Crusade.

We'd see thousands of women saved every weekend.

It was epic.

We traveled together for years.

We became this little, you know, traveling road, I've got your back community, kind of like the circus, only without the wild animals and the juggling clowns.

And um, one year Cece Wynans was part of our little traveling group.

Now, those of you under 30 who may not know Cece, you need to crawl out from under a rock because she is like the most gifted musician who has ever sung into a microphone.

She's lauded as really the mother of gospel music.

She's unstinkin' believable.

We were at a women of faith, this was about probably 10, 12 years ago in Denver, Colorado, and uh several of us were right on the front row, probably 10,000 women.

Cece's on stage.

I don't remember what she's singing, but it was, oh my heavens.

You know when you can just imagine the angels stopping what they're doing in glory and just leaning over to listen.

I mean, it was just that amazing.

And so I'm on the front row listening to Cece, and we live in Nashville and our are kind of sort of friends.

Mostly I'm a stalker, but I know Cece pretty well.

And I was so overwhelmed by how amazing her song was that I just unzipped my boots and I hurled one after the other on stage.

You may or may not know that in urban churches, that is kind of like a standing ovation.

That's Motown's Motown's version of a standing ovation.

And and I love black church.

My daughter is black, and so I just thought, I'm just gonna tell her how amazing it is.

So I thaw boots.

I mean, I was wearing something appropriate.

It was not bougie, um, or hoochie is what I was trying to say.

Uh unzip, sorry, Matthew, you're gonna have to clean this up in just a minute.

Um, I zip off my boots, and one after the other, I throw them on stage.

Well, CeCe is howling.

She knows exactly what I was trying to communicate.

I'm like, you go, girl, you're uh nice bang.

But the police at this particular arena didn't understand the sentiment, and like three officers come running down and they were going to arrest me.

And if that had they thought I was like a crazy fan, which I am, but I was, you know, didn't deserve jail.

Um, and our production team had to tell them she's actually, she's actually okay.

She's one of our Bible teachers.

Um, I don't know if C.S.

Lewis was thinking about hurling shoes when he said this, but listen to what Sir Lewis said.

I think I can almost justify my boot hurling.

God can show himself as he really is only to real men.

And that means not simply to men who are individually good, but to men who are united together in a body, loving one another, helping one another, showing him to one another.

For that is what God meant humanity to be like, like players in one band or organs in one body.

Consequently, the one really adequate instrument for learning about God is the whole Christian community waiting for him together.

It's not an idea.

The body of Christ is actually a mandate from the very beginning.

Scripture is riddled with the theme of this series, we were made for each other.

As a matter of fact, when you get to the New Testament canon, 98% of the imperatives, and that's just a fancy seminary word, that means when God tells us or instructs us to do something, 98% of the imperatives in the New Testament are in the context of community.

That means we actually can't do the Christian life without each other.

We've got 59 one another, body of Christ, imperatives in the New Testament.

And we're gonna scroll all 59 because I know it's February 1st, and some of you are behind on your Bible reading.

Be at peace with each other, wash one another's feet, love one another, love one another, love one another, love one another, love one another.

John really sticks on that theme.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love, honor one another above yourselves, live in harmony with one another, love one another, stop passing judgment on one another, accept one another, then just as Christ accepted you.

Instruct one another, greet one another with a holy kiss.

I love that when I'm 61 and single.

When you come together to eat, wait for each other, have equal concern for each other, greet one another with a holy kiss, greet one another with a holy kiss.

Thank you, Apostle Paul.

Serve one another in love.

If you keep on biting and devouring each other, you will be destroyed by each other.

Let us not become conceited, provoking, and envying each other.

Carry each other's burdens, be patient, bearing with one another in love, be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual psalms.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ and humility.

Consider others better than yourselves.

Do not lie to each other, bear with each other.

Forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another, teach one another, admonish one another.

Make your love increase and overflow for each other.

Love each other, encourage each other, encourage each other.

Build each other up, encourage one another daily, spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Encourage one another.

Do not slander one another.

Don't grumble, grumble against each other.

Confess your sins to each other, pray for each other, love one another deeply from the heart.

Live in harmony with one another.

Love each other deeply.

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others.

Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.

Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Love one another.

Love one another.

Love one another.

Love one another.

Love one another.

Love one another.

You deserve to be celebrated.

That was epic.

That was really, really good.

What scripture teaches us is it is impossible to run toward Jesus alone.

It's again not based on our personality type.

It's not based on our Enneagram number.

It's not based on our preference.

The body of Christ is not a metaphor, it is a mandate.

This love letter we call the Bible.

It is not a, I have a quote that I really liked that I actually wrote, but I don't remember because I was drinking caffeine when I wrote it.

The Bible isn't just inscripturated data about our Creator Redeemer, nor is it solely a set of divine parameters by which we can establish a system of ethics.

God's word also stresses and strengthens belonging to a community of other believers.

The body of Christ isn't a metaphor, it's a divine mandate.

The longer I stumble along this journey of faith, the more I've come to realize I am desperate for other people.

I can't carry the weight of my own life by myself.

I need other people.

Now, just in case you've been playing Candy Crush for the last 10 minutes, I want to go to another passage, kind of an unlikely passage, that underscores this idea of us walking together in community.

The fact that we really were made for each other.

If you brought your Bibles, turn to Leviticus, I know that seems like an unlikely place to go to a passage on community, but most of us are familiar with Acts.

Most of us are familiar with 1 Corinthians.

But I want to really highlight the fact that this is not just a New Testament idea.

Apostle Paul didn't just dream this up from the very beginning.

Our creator, Redeemer, has emphasized: I want y'all together.

I want you to bear one another's burdens.

I want you to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

This is Leviticus chapter 7, and it's not about scabs.

Leviticus 7 · chapter mention

Verse 11, and this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings that one day that one may offer to the Lord.

If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the thanksgiving sacrifice unleavened loaves mixed with oil, unleavened wafer smeared with oil, and loaves of fine flour well mixed with oil.

With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving, he shall bring his offering with loaves of leavened bread.

And from it he shall offer one loaf from each offering as a gift to the Lord.

It shall belong to the priest who throws the blood of the peace offerings, and the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his offering.

He shall not leave any of it until the morning.

Now my gut says a few of you are going, I was not at all encouraged by that.

That just seems gross and barbaric.

And I get it.

At first read Leviticus 7 sounds very Old Testament-y, until you read between the lines, until you understand their socio-historical context, and then you'll realize oh, it would do us good to practice Leviticus 7 even tonight after church at Papacitos.

What was going on here is God was giving his people yet again parameters for community, an antidote to loneliness.

He said, when y'all come together to say thank you to me, maybe it's because you had a healthy baby, maybe it's because you had an abundant harvest.

When you come to bring your thanksgiving offering to acknowledge that I'm the giver of all good gifts, I want you to bring both leavened and unleavened bread.

That means bread made with yeast and without yeast.

So think pita and facasha.

And by the way, how many of you are still on your uh carb-produced diet of the year?

Keto, paleo.

It's from the devil.

Jesus calls himself the bread of life.

So just saying it's not at all biblical.

Um, but no, didn't mean to step on your toes.

He says, Bring bread.

Skinny bread and thick bread.

And then he says, bring an animal, because you, in this culture, before the crucifixion and resurrection of our Savior, animal blood was part of a symbolic sacrifice.

So if you drove a Ford, you brought a goat or a sheep, because everybody had those.

If you drove a BMW, you brought a cow.

And so those of y'all who live around Southlake, you'd bring cows.

Um of y'all who live out in the boonies like me, you'd be bringing a sheep or a goat.

And so you bring your animal, you bring your bread, you go to the priest, and uh they would butcher your animal, and then they would take the fat and the entrails of the animal, and they'd put it in a ceremonial bowl, and they'd set that on the off altar.

And then they would take blood from your animal.

And they'd throw that against a wall as is prescribed in the Old Testament.

And then once the sacrifice has been made, you would give to the priest a portion of that bread you brought, usually it's about 40 loaves, and you'd give them a portion of the meat you brought.

That's how God established a system for vocational ministers to eat, kind of divine Instacart or Uber Eats.

And once you had shared that bread and that meat with the priest, then you had the rest of the bread, about 35 loaves, and you had the rest of the meat.

Now, if you want to Google how much meat you can get from a sheep or a goat, it's between 35 and 50 pounds.

So just imagine you've got two or three priests.

I mean, even if they're big eaters, they're not going to eat more than a pound of meat a piece.

Google how much meat an average size cow yields.

Some of y'all grew up on dairy farms, some of y'all still have beef cows.

It's between three and five hundred pounds, depending on the cut.

Now remember what God tells his people in Leviticus 7.

All of that has to be eaten before your alarm goes off, preferably not on an Apple Watch tomorrow morning.

All of it has to be eaten.

Y'all, what is God saying?

You've got to have a party.

You've got to have a party.

There's no stinking way one family can eat 35 loaves of bread and even on the skinny side, 35 pounds of meat, much less 500 pounds.

So if you are thanking God for something He's done for your family, and you're like, oh, snap, we've got 500 pounds of fajitas.

You've got to invite not just your neighbors, you've got to send your kids out on their bikes.

You've got to get everybody in your town.

And then think of the evangelistic opportunity here.

Why did I get invited to this party?

We were kind of hungry.

Our harvest hadn't been so great.

Wow, I get all these, all you can eat, fajita bar.

This is epic.

And bread because that's Christian.

Wow, why are y'all celebrating?

Let me tell you what Yahweh has done.

Do you see?

From the very beginning, God said, I want y'all getting together.

You can't do this by yourself.

And when you're at your lowest, is when you're going to be the most prideful and you're not going to want to be an inconvenience.

And if you haven't had good Christian counseling, you're going to isolate.

So I'm going to establish parameters that ensure that you get together because you're going to forget you're made in my image.

You're going to forget you are hardwired for relationship.

So I'm going to establish a system by which y'all get together all the time.

And y'all, it wasn't just the Thanksgiving offerings.

There was the weekly Sabbath, the seventh new moon, or the Feast of Trumpets, the sabbatical year, the year of Jubilee, Passover, Pentecost, the Feast of Tabernacles.

Over and over and over again in Scripture, he said, Let me give you a reason to get together.

Let me give you a reason to have a barbecue.

Let me give you a reason to get together over and over and over and over again.

Loneliness was never part of God's original plan for us.

It came with a fall.

Because from the very beginning, he has said, y'all were made for each other.

It's not just a theme, it's not just a series, a gateway.

God wrote this.

You were made for each other.

You can't have intimacy with me if you don't have intimacy with each other.

I don't have that many gifts.

I feel like I'm kind of a jack of all trades, master of none.

I'll tell you the two things that I do reasonably well.

I can hug.

And at this age, I'm 61.

I can hug, and usually there's not any weirdness to it, you know?

Because even though I would like a man between 60 and death, I'll go younger, I'll go 55.

But usually there's there's nothing untoward or weird about it.

And I love when some of these precious young men and young women want to hug from their auntie.

I can hug with the best of them.

And I'm grateful because I know what a train wreck I was before Jesus.

I know what a train wreck I've been after Jesus.

And instead of kicking me to the curb, he has had so much mercy for my sorry self.

Those are the two things I do well.

Relatively well.

I was at a women's event right before Christmas.

They were about, I don't know, 500 women at this event.

I still do a lot of estrogen festivals.

So I love the testosterone.

Thank you, brother.

So excited when there's men in the house.

But this was a group of just women, and at the very end of the night, uh, the woman who's the main speaker said, you know, we're just gonna be family tonight, and and let's have a time of prayer tonight.

Instead of just saying, I'll pray for you.

Doesn't it bug you when people go, I'll pray for you?

And I'm like, Well, how about now?

You know, a woman told me not too long ago she prayed for me every Tuesday at 9 a.m.

And at first I was encouraged because I thought I'm so excited somebody besides my mom prays for me every week.

But my second thought was, What if I'm struggling on Wednesday?

You know, I mean, I you know you just want prayer then.

Well, this woman who was leading the event said, we're gonna have a time of really intentional prayer right now.

And she said, you know, the holidays are coming up.

We're we're just on the other side of Christmas.

And the common denominator of Christmas is usually disappointment.

And so many of us have a seat at the table that's that's not filled anymore.

So many of us don't have a Norman Rockwell Christmas.

And she said, if you're struggling with loneliness this season, will you stand up?

Well, probably 30 or 40 women stood up out of that group of four or five hundred, which you know that's that's a hard thing to do, especially in the south, and you're wondering if your spanks have rolled, you know.

I mean, it's like that's just kind of a very vulnerable thing.

And this woman on the very front row, I was kind of sitting right down there, Pastor Matthew.

This woman, basically where you are, and I'm right down there, stood up.

And the moment she stood up, probably 45, she just began to sob.

And I thought, oh, oh my goodness, she needs somebody with skin on.

And so I just ran down.

It was kind of formal, but I thought, you know, I'm old, I can break formality.

I ran down and I just grabbed the saint.

And I just held her, never met her before in my life.

I just held her.

And you know how sometimes when you've almost got it together, even though you're crying, but somebody hugs you, especially if it's your mama.

I mean, it's just like, you know, just like the whatever was in the dam comes out and all the water comes out.

And she just began to heave.

I've got broad shoulders.

I'm just holding this saint.

And the woman who is praying is a friend of mine, and she's kind of an introvert, so I thought it's probably gonna be like a two or three minute prayer, you know, this will be just right.

Well, for whatever reason, she got super Pentecostal, and the prayer just I mean, you know, after like the sixth minute, because I was back up against the stage.

I had nowhere to go.

And this woman, it was a sold-out event.

I mean, there's nowhere for her to go.

And so after a while it got kind of uncomfortably intimate because we're just, I mean, we are just stuck together like glue.

And she's sobbing, and I'm holding her, and I thought, I've got, like, I've got nowhere to go.

And I didn't know the prayer would be 14 minutes and we'd be stuck together.

I mean, after a while you start to sweat.

I mean, it was very, very awkward.

And I thought, I'm gonna just back my head up to say, sorry, you know, I didn't mean to hold you for this long.

This is just a little awkward.

Well, when I go to back my head, there's no place to even put my head.

And she kind of puts her head back a little bit, and we get tickled, and she said, I'm so sorry.

And I said, Oh, you don't you don't have to say you're sorry?

And she goes, No.

And I said, No, no, no.

I'm I'm I'm I mean, I have times I need people to to just be like this when I'm sad too.

She goes, No, no, I'm sorry.

I got a big glob of snot in your hair.

Now y'all, I've been in vocational ministry for 40 years.

I have never had such a uh a large deposit in my hair.

And I couldn't do anything about it.

You know, it's like that's fine.

And I was up next, so I couldn't go to the restroom, and so I just walked up to the front of these women, and I thought, this really is the holiest thing I've done this year.

The holiest thing I did in 2024 was to get to be with that saint and say, I got you.

I'm right here.

I couldn't even get it out of my hair in the restroom.

And I thought God just wanted me to know you're most shaped like me.

When you wear somebody else's joy or somebody else's pain, I've made you for that.

And so we're gonna end tonight.

You know, I'm the least professional guest you ever have at Gateway.

And I am so grateful that God has woven me into this family.

I'm gonna ask you, if you've struggled with loneliness this year, would you please stand?

You're in a safe place.

Just stand.

Some of you gentlemen, go ahead and bre be the brave brothers you are, because this isn't based on uh gender.

David went through acute seasons of loneliness.

Paul went through acute seasons of loneliness.

If you're a little lonely, would you just stand up?

Saints, I'm gonna ask you to practice real community right now.

If you're not inclined, you don't have to hug them.

But it doesn't take much to put your hand on a brother or a sister's shoulder and say, I see you.

I'm right here.

What a glorious gift to get to take the corner of somebody else's mat and carry them to the roof and lower them to Jesus.

We were made for this.

This is where the body of Christ differs from any other community.

We were made for this.

Other campuses, would you just follow Holy Spirit?

Uh, pastors, just do whatever's appropriate on your campus.

But if we can practice being a family right now in an authentic way, I just think, I think it's right.

I think it will honor the Lord.

If you're standing, or those of y'all up in the beautiful cheap seats, if nobody around you has stood up, would you just ask those beautiful image bearers around you, how can I pray for you?

What's going on in your family?

What's your name?

Do you play softball?

Ask somebody around you if they've got plans for dinner.

Let's not let Gateway be a place that underscores isolation and loneliness.

I've been in a lot of big churches that are filled with lonely people.
