“The Power of One” by Mark Jobe

Welcome to Gateway Churches Podcast.

Wherever you're tuning in from, we hope you're encouraged by today's message.

Well, we're beginning a new series on discipleship called Follow Me.

But the truth is that we have a hard time following someone we don't know, and especially following someone we don't trust.

So discipleship boiled down is getting to know Jesus, surrendering our life to him, and following him along with other believers.

Because when I get isolated or when I began to do life alone, I miss so much of what God's trying to do in me.

I remember years ago, one of our pastors who used to oversee groups got up here one weekend and he said, If all you ever get from Gateway Church is what you receive on the weekends, you're missing over half of what we have to offer.

And he went on to say, we do life in groups.

We might come on the weekends to worship and be encouraged and be filled up again, maybe be healed, be saved, whatever.

But we do life in groups.

So I want to encourage all of us this year that if we're not in a group, if you're not in a group, you get into a group, into a small group, do community together, because that's where true discipleship takes place.

The enemy will try to get you isolated, it'll try to get you self-absorbed, try to rob you of your joy, because we were called to do life together as the body of Christ.

I want to speak to you today on the subject of the power of one.

I will say that some of the most miserable people I know are those doing life alone.

There is a problem with just doing life alone.

Let me just tell this story if you don't mind.

A few years ago, Sandy and I were uh doing a conference in Kenya, and so one afternoon they said, we want to take you guys to uh uh African safari.

That sounds pretty exciting, right?

Now, don't get too scared.

It wasn't with rifles and guns, and it was a photo safari.

Bring your phone, bring your, you know, bring your camera.

But it was so exciting.

And uh they took us early one morning and we saw this pride of lions, and they were gathered around, and the the guide said, I want you to look at those two lions right there.

I'm telling you by their stance that they're gonna be having a feast later today.

And I got to thinking, okay, how does he know that?

And so we went back later that afternoon, same pride of lions, and sure enough, there they were, eating their kill, you know, the cycle of life, the circle of life.

Can I say that everyone caught up in the circle of life?

It's not a circle of life for them, okay?

But what had happened was this wilder beast had gotten isolated and separated from the herd.

And those lions had been watching that herd all day.

And just as soon as one got isolated, as soon as one got separated, they moved in.

That's exactly the way the enemy tries to stalk us.

The scripture says he roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

And I heard a preacher one time say, Yeah, but Jesus pulled all of his teeth.

Well, that might be funny in a sermon, but how many of you have ever had the enemy take a bite out of you?

You know what I'm talking about?

Satan's real, demons are real, evil is real, and the enemy's always looking for an opportunity to try to separate us, isolate us, and take us out.

That's why the scripture says we're to be sober and vigilant, and we're to always be watching and be ready, and we're to guard our hearts because the enemy's always trying to do something to take us out.

In Luke chapter 15, starting in verse 1, I want to read a story to you.

Luke 15 · chapter mention

It's a parable that Jesus shared with the teachers of the law of that day.

It's starting in verse 1, it says, Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathered around to hear Jesus.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.

Then Jesus told them this parable, and here's what he said.

He said, Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them.

Now that's the way it's quoted in Luke 15.

In Matthew 18, it says, One goes astray.

One goes astray.

I want you to remember that.

Moving on, it says, Does he not leave the 99 in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and he goes home.

Then he calls all of his friends and neighbors together and says, Rejoice with me, like I'm throwing a party.

Rejoice with me, I found my lost sheep.

I tell you that in the same way there would be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous persons who do not need repentance.

You see, repentance is a good thing.

Repentance is not some preacher screaming at you about your sin and trying to condemn you and you know, screaming the word, repent.

Repentance means to change your mind in such a way that it changes your heart in such a way that it changes your future.

Repentance is a is not just a mind change, it's a life change.

It's like saying, I'm setting my heart and I'm setting my mind on the things of God.

Repentance is a good thing.

You see, we were created, as I said, to do life together.

When God created Adam, he said, it's not good for man to be alone.

Now, a lot of wives can agree with that.

They're like, Yeah, that's bad, you know.

I get that.

Matter of fact, I'm gonna date myself for a second here, and I'll just say, if you know, you know, okay.

But uh Three Dog Knight understood it.

They said one's the loneliest number you'll ever do.

I get that, okay?

You don't want to be alone, not in the kingdom of God.

But the enemy's always trying to get us alone.

Ecclesiastes 4, 9 and 10 says, Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.

And I love this part.

If either of them fall down, one the other one can help them up.

But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

We need each other.

We have a kind of a funny saying among some friends of mine.

I'll call them when I'm having a bad day.

And I say, Are you on the edge of the cliff today?

And they go, No, not today.

I say, Good, because I am.

Talk me down.

And we're serious.

We need each other.

We need others to process life, we need others to process problems, we need others to pray for us and enter into the equation and help us sort it out.

Am I making sense to you?

Because if you try to sort it, I know some of us are like, well, I've got God, I'll just go to God.

Have you ever been around someone who formed all their theology off of Google?

Alone, in a vacuum, they come out with weird stuff.

I'm like, dude, you need a wife.

You need somebody to bounce that off of.

You need community, you need a small group, you need a theological help, pastor, you know, someone to help you with that.

It's just not good to be alone.

Loneliness is an epidemic in America.

A recent Harvard study says that social isolation or loneliness can actually shorten your life.

Millions of dollars are spent every year on medications to help Americans cope.

It's been a larger problem since COVID.

I mean, I want you to think about it.

COVID, I know, 2020, we're five years away from it, but we're not five years away from the fear.

There are people still living in fear because either they lost someone they loved.

I mean, how many of you lost someone you loved during that time?

I did.

I lost some close friends.

I preached funerals for some close friends.

COVID was real.

For all those out there that say it was a political thing, I'm sorry.

I watched my friends die.

And it put a fear on the church.

It put a fear on us coming together in large crowds.

And I understand that.

Some people are at risk with their health.

Some people are health compromised.

And I know people who have asthma, and they they just have to be careful where they go and what they do.

But I'm going to tell you something.

If you're if your health is not at risk and you've taken that now and made it an excuse, the enemy's used it to isolate you.

It's time.

Maybe I'll just go this way.

It's time, if you're watching at home, if you're fearful, it's time to come back.

We need each other.

We need corporate worship.

We need the laying on of hands.

We need sometimes for somebody just to put their arm around us and say, hey, we're going to make this and we're going to make it together.

And I understand.

So the enemy will try to get you hurt because if he can get you hurt, then he can back you away from relationship.

But if you back away from relationship too long, you'll self-absorb and then you'll self-destruct.

So I want to talk to you about this.

Number one, the problem of one.

The reason one can be a problem is there's a danger of isolation.

But just like there is a problem with one, I have to say that usually every family has a problem child.

Just like that sheep that decided, I, you know what, I see some other grass over there.

I think I'll go over there and they they kind of get self-absorbed.

Every family, or let's say almost every family, has a problem child.

If you don't know who that problem child was in your family, and you kind of look at a family picture and you can't find that problem child, I bet I could help you find that problem child.

And if you're an only child, I know who the problem child was.

But the scripture says here in Isaiah 53, 6, all we like sheep have gone astray.

We're all problem children.

And then it says, we have turned everyone to his own way.

And that's the reason living alone and the danger of isolation is real.

By nature, we do our own thing.

By nature, we pull away from people.

And it says here in Isaiah 53, the Lord has laid upon Jesus the iniquity of us all.

But it says we've all turned to our own way.

So why'd the sheep go astray?

For the same reason we do.

We turned our own way.

We focus on ourselves.

We make life about us.

And when we make life about us, we become, listen to me, oblivious to the fact that the enemy is around us, just waiting for an opportunity.

When we make life about us, we pull away, we get isolated, and we become vulnerable.

And he's looking for that time to take us out.

We need each other.

Number one, not only the problem of one, but I want to talk to you about the priority of one.

So we may be the problem child, we may be horrible alone, but let me tell you something.

The Lord puts his priority on us.

And this passage I just read to you a moment ago is not just talking about a sheep that ran away.

It's talking about a good shepherd who pursued him.

And that's exactly the heart of the Father.

You see, this story is not about sheep at all.

It's about us.

This parable is trying to communicate to us that yes, we're like sheep, but he's a good shepherd.

And he shows us two things in this passage.

He shows us our worth because he's willing to leave it all to come rescue us.

I love that about this passage.

I'm going to tell you a short story as it relates to worth.

A father was talking to his son about a family heirloom, and he said, Son, I've waited until now to give you this pocket watch from your great grandfather.

And I want you to understand the worth of this watch.

So I'm going to ask you to take this pocket watch down to the local jeweler, and I want them to appraise it for you, and I want you to bring it back to me, and I want you to tell me what they said.

So the young man takes the watch down to the jeweler, he comes back.

His dad says, What'd they say?

And they said, Well, it's worth about a hundred dollars because it's old.

He said, Okay.

Now I want you to take it to the pawn shop, and I want you to see what they say.

And he said, Okay.

He takes the same watch, the pocket watch, to the pawn shop, and he comes back just so frustrated.

He said, Dad, they said it's only worth$20 because it's all scratched up.

He said, I understand.

He said, One more place I want you to take this watch.

I want you to take it down to the museum.

And I want you to ask the curator to tell you what this watch is worth.

Son came back shocked.

He said, Dad, the curator said it's worth$375,000 because it's a one-of-a-kind antique.

You see, the value of the watch depends on who knew about it the most.

The one who knows you the most, he knows that you're a one of a kind.

He knows you're worth the blood of Jesus, and he's willing to leave the 99 and chase after you because he knows your worth.

You see, this is not just about a good shepherd, but this is about the good shepherd who knows you.

He not only knows you, he knows where you are.

He knows where you're hiding.

Some of you are hiding in the world.

You don't want anybody to know what you did Friday night.

I understand.

Many of us have been in that world.

We've lived in that place, and we hide from God because we think he's mad at us.

He's not mad at us.

He's a good shepherd, and he's following you into that bar, and he's following you into that sin because he's trying to rescue you, not just correct you.

Some of us hide in the world.

Some of us hide in church.

The bigger the church, the easier it is to hide.

I'm not saying because you're on the back row, you're hiding.

I'm not saying that.

You can hide right down front.

You can get religious and put up a wall and a mask and hide behind all kinds of terms and things that you've learned.

But inwardly, I want to know have you shut God out?

What's he trying to say to you?

What does he want to do?

I love how this passage really shows us the true heart of God.

I love the fact that the shepherd does not send an angel to find you.

But the shepherd comes personally.

There was a pastor one time I heard preach on this passage, and he basically said that when a shepherd chases after sheep, if that particular sheep keeps rebelling and keeps straying and keeps running away, that the shepherd would actually break the legs of the sheep, put them on his shoulder, and take them home.

And I thought, not only is that a horrible story, that's really bad theology.

The Bible says it's the goodness of God that leads us to repentance, not the fierce anger of God.

I had a woman stop me not a f just a few years ago, right down here, and say to me, I don't understand you guys at Gateway Church.

She said, You preach about the love of God and the goodness of God and the favor of God, but you don't preach about the judgment of God.

What about the judgment of God?

And I said, Oh, dear lady, you don't understand.

God put all of his judgment on Jesus.

Jesus bore the judgment of God that we might know the goodness of God, the favor of God, the love of God.

Jesus took it.

Yeah, there's a judgment, but Jesus took it.

So when I think about what the shepherd came to do, he came to rescue us, put us on his shoulder, his shoulders, and bring us back home.

You see, this shepherd that I was I was studying about an actual shepherd in Israel, he said, Sheep have a good memory.

You break their legs, they're gonna remember.

You know what I'm talking about.

Sheep have a memory.

And I really believe it's the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.

I love John 10, 11.

It says, I'm the good shepherd.

The good shepherd lays down his life for a sheep.

You remember what John 10 10 says?

The thief comes not but for to steal, kill, and destroy.

But the Lord says, But I've come to give you life.

And to give it to you more abundantly, then he says, I'm the good shepherd.

And the good shepherd lays down his life for a sheep.

I'm thankful this passage doesn't say, and the good shepherd breaks your legs.

Scripture says we love him because he loved us first.

Scripture says, while we were yet sinners, he died for us.

He comes to get you because of your worth and because of his love.

Number three, I want to talk to you about the power of one.

Yeah, we can be a problem, but God's made us a priority.

But there's something about a person when they get filled up with the Holy Spirit of God, when they get discipled.

You know what I'm concerned about about us going into this discipleship series?

That you're so isolated or maybe so hurt, or maybe still filled with distrust that you're not willing to sign up for a class or attend a small group and to really jump into discipleship because you're just going to kind of wait and see.

I'm telling you, it's no longer time to wait and see.

It's time to jump in with all of our heart, with all of our mind, with all of our soul, loving Jesus and loving each other because the Lord wants to raise us up.

Here's why.

Some of you, listen, you need to take that smile to the door and be a greeter, but there's a process for you to go through to do that.

Some of you need to be ushers, but others of you, there's leadership in you.

For instance, if you're a CEO of a large company, you say, listen, I don't know that I just want to be a greeter.

We want to train you up, get you ready, let you lead a small group, let you lead uh uh an equipping class.

There's something for you to do in the kingdom of God.

Some of you, when you drive down the road, you your heart bleeds for the homeless.

Then let's get you plugged into outreach.

There's something for you to do.

But it's deeper than that.

There's a calling on your life.

God gave you gifts, he's anointed you with the Holy Spirit.

He wants to get you trained so that he can release you to do what he's called you to do.

There's power in one.

There's power in one.

Jeremiah 29, 11 says, For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord.

Plans to prosper you, not to harm you, not to break your legs, plans to give you hope and give you a future.

The happiest people I know are the ones who've not only fallen in love with Jesus, but they've fallen in love with what Jesus wants them to do with their life.

Not everybody's called to do what I'm doing.

Thank the Lord.

I mean, we need spirit-filled doctors, we need spirit-filled teachers.

God knows we need spirit-filled lawyers.

You hear what I'm saying?

We need spirit-filled judges, we need spirit-filled politicians, but we need spirit-filled moms and dads.

We need those who, you know what it means really to be discipled?

It means you look like, act like, walk like, and are like Jesus.

That's what we need.

And in every area of our life that we don't have that, we need to yield our life.

Lord, just make me more like you, more like you, more like you.

You see, you're called to make a difference.

You're gifted for a purpose.

Fulfillment and joy in life comes from walking in that purpose.

He rescues you because he loves you.

He sets you free so he can empower you.

He empowers you so that you can become a disciple.

And you're the only one that can be you.

I can't do what you're called to do.

You know why you can lead some people to Jesus that I could never touch?

They don't know me, but they know you.

I heard someone say right uh one time that family members, your own family members are the hardest one to lead to Jesus.

I disagree with that.

I heard someone say, your friends are the hardest ones to lead to Jesus.

I disagree with that.

Now that might be true if you're a hypocrite.

If they see you acting one way and then they find out you're saved and they're surprised.

That happens.

But I think your family and your friends ought to be the easiest ones to lead to Jesus because they're watching Jesus in you.

Man, when I got saved, my friends were shocked.

First of all, I lost half my vocabulary.

I didn't know I had no adjectives to describe life.

I finally had to read my English book and learn a few.

But the change in my life was a testimony that Jesus is alive.

Same with you.

There are people that you'll lead to Jesus, people that you'll impact for God.

I could never impact.

Impact for God because they don't know me.

Matter of fact, a lot of times when I walk up and they say, Hey, what do you do?

I say, I'm a pastor.

And you just watch the walls go up.

Oh.

It's really fun on the golf course.

About whole ten after they've been drinking, cussing, and lying and cheating.

And hey, what do you do?

Oh, I'm a pastor.

Oh.

I usually always win the second nine.

I don't know why.

I just.

But I'm going to tell you something.

The Lord wants to use you in a very personal way to change others' lives.

There's power when you find out who you are and you begin to live it out.

And I just want to submit something to you.

There's no better time than now to get full of Jesus, yielded to his spirit.

Let him save you, let him heal you.

Let him set you free.

Let him fill you with the Holy Spirit.

Let him disciple you so that you can serve.

And I'm going to tell you something.

The vision of this house has not changed.

The Lord wants to use us together as one giant family to bring the kingdom of God to earth.

Do you believe that?

I believe that with all my heart.

I want to tell you a story of a gentleman that made an incredible difference.

He was one man, but through his leadership and through his just godly ministry, he got a burden during COVID for what was happening in Italy.

In Italy, everyone that went on the ventilator died.

It was horrible.

They were losing people by the thousands.

Hospitals were doing everything.

It wasn't a medical issue.

They couldn't figure out what it was that was missing.

But he knew in his heart that he could make a difference.

So through his organization, he shipped a field hospital over to Cremona, Italy, to treat the patients.

After a few weeks of treating patients, they began to see some breakthroughs.

One gentleman by the name of Umberto had the temperature of 105 degrees.

He was in the ICU and they placed him on a ventilator.

His wife and kids kissed him goodbye because that had been the history of what had happened up until then.

But what this American knew would bring a change and a difference into the scenario was bringing God into the equation and bringing intercessors in to pray.

Qualified doctors, the best of the medical that the medical world had to offer in equipment, but he took prayer teams.

And they laid hands on Umberto, and as Umberto began to drift off to sleep under the medication and the ventilator, the last thing he remembered was people praying.

And later his testimony was when I woke up, they were still praying.

This scenario happened over and over and over again.

So much so that the Italian government said about this man in the local newspapers as well, he's like Mother Teresa on steroids.

That's a pretty incredible compliment.

I'm talking about a gentleman that we've had speak here before.

His name's Franklin Graham.

Franklin's just one man.

But the influence that he had in Italy, it was so incredible.

Matter of fact, after all the people's lives were saved, they said, You've saved so many lives and so many people have been healed.

What would you like to do next?

And he said, Well, I've helped heal their bodies.

How about we work on healing their souls?

And they said, Well, how do you do that?

And so he explained to them basically a crusade, a gospel meeting, much like what we're in here.

And he said, Let me tell them about the good news of Jesus Christ.

But he'd gained so much favor they let him do it.

It went so well in Cremona that a couple years later they asked him to come do it in Rome.

Standy and I had the privilege of being there because they invited two of our favorite worship people to be there, and we just said, We're going to.

But they filled the city auditorium, 10,000 people inside to hear the gospel message.

Almost that many outside in the rain in front of large screens, so hungry for the simple truth that Jesus loves you.

And when they gave the invitation, the floor just began to be filled with people coming to Jesus Christ.

It was an amazing, amazing thing to see.

I'll tell you why.

I don't know what's in the heart of God of how he wants to use you.

All I know is you're worth enough for him to leave everyone else and come rescue you and to bring you back on his shoulders because he has a plan for your life.

He has something that only you can do.

He doesn't want you isolated, and he certainly doesn't want you struggling with loneliness.

You know what the greatest remedy for loneliness is?

Some say, well, you need freedom ministry.

Oh, you might.

But I think the greatest thing for loneliness is a real relationship.

A real relationship with God and a real relationship with brothers and sisters in Christ.

I believe today two things.

The Lord, first of all, if you don't know Jesus as your Savior and your Lord, He wants you to surrender your heart and your life to Him.

Some of you grew up in church.

Maybe you were baptized as a child.

Maybe you prayed a prayer like I did when I was eight.

But between the age of eight and the age of 16, I got no better, I got worse.

I didn't have a relationship with Jesus.

But at the age of 16, I realized I needed him.

I bowed my knees and I said, Jesus, be Lord of my life.

And he changed me from the inside out.

Some of you still need that.

You may be 60 years old and you still don't know if you know the Lord.

Today I want to pray with you that you might know the Lord.

The second thing today is I believe the Lord wants to set you free from loneliness and all the things that plague you alongside loneliness, all the regrets, all the guilt, all the fear, all the things, all the anxiety, the Lord wants to set you free from that.

So I'm gonna ask you to stand with me right now.

I'm gonna ask that you stand at every campus, and I want you to look at me for just a moment.

I want your pastors today to be able to know who I'm praying for right now.

And so I'm gonna ask if you would, all over the auditorium here and all over the auditorium there, would you just bow your heads for just a moment?

I say that because I want you to have privacy with you and the Lord.

Because I want you to be honest about what I'm asking right now.

I'm asking you, do you really know that you know that you know that you have a relationship with Jesus?

Maybe you've heard it said like this if you died today, do you have assurance you'd go to heaven?

But I'm gonna ask it even a little differently.

I want to ask you, has Jesus moved into your life in such a way that he's changed you from the inside out and he is as real to you as anyone else you meet.

Do you walk and talk with him?

Does he speak to you?

Has he changed you?

Is he forgiven you?

Or are you still carrying around the guilt of your sin?

I don't want to see you get isolated and the enemy pick you off.

So right now, if you'd say to me, Pastor, I want you to pray for me.

I want to settle this issue.

I want to know Jesus Christ, and I want to know that I'm saved, and I want to know that I've been forgiven.

Pray for me.

If that's you, I'm gonna ask you to hold your hand up in this auditorium and in every other auditorium right now.

And if you're online and you're at one of the campuses, one of the prison campuses, let your brothers, let your sisters know that that's you, and that you want someone to pray with you.

Anyone else, just raise your hand all over the auditorium.

I'm gonna lead us in a prayer in just a moment, but I want to know who am I praying with?

Anyone else?

All right, I see your hands.

You can put them down.

I'm gonna ask right now that you would pray this prayer after me.

If you're there at a campus, pray this prayer after me.

If you're here in this auditorium, let's pray this out loud.

As a matter of fact, I believe we could all pray this prayer.

It won't hurt us to all pray this prayer.

So let's pray this prayer together.

I want you right now to say, Heavenly Father, I ask you right now, would you forgive me of all of my sin?

I believe in you, Jesus.

I believe you're the good shepherd that you came looking for me, and today I surrender to you.

I repent of my sins, I confess you as my savior and Lord.

Put me on your shoulders, bring me back to the fold.

I want to engage, I want to know my brothers and sisters, I want to know you, I want to know my purpose in Jesus' name.

Amen.

The second thing that I felt so strongly about was that the Lord today wants to release and remove off of you loneliness.

And this time I'm gonna ask you just to keep your eyes open and your head up, because those around you are gonna be part of loneliness breaking off of you.

Remember what I said, we can't do life alone, we need each other.

And some someone around you right now will be the key to loneliness breaking off of you forever.

So if you'd say to me right now, Pastor Mark, I've struggled with loneliness.

I've struggled with isolation.

Maybe you'd say, I struggle with anxiety and worry and regret and fear and all the things.

It's almost like loneliness has a family.

You know what I mean?

If loneliness comes in and isolation comes in, then here comes the whole family.

Can I tell you the whole family's vacating the house today in Jesus' name?

Okay, is that all right?

So you just say to me, I I've I've I've been lonely too long.

Then I want I want to I want to let those around you agree with you in prayer.

The Lord wants to set you free today of loneliness and that family that goes with it.

You'd say, that's me.

I want you to hold your hand up.

Your heads are up, your eyes are open, hold your hand up.

I've struggled with loneliness too long.

I want those around these with their hands up, reach over and touch them on the shoulder.

We're gonna pray together.

Also at every campus right now, hands in the air of struggle with loneliness, I've struggled with anxiety, fear, regret, isolation.

Hands are up, and I want if you're close to any of these with their hands up, just reach over and touch them.

We're gonna agree together right now.

Father, in the name of Jesus, we command loneliness to go and the whole family along with it.

All anxiety, all fear, all worry.

Lord, I just saw people crying in the night because they were so alone.

Those who struggle with loneliness, you can be in the middle of a crowd this big and you're still alone.

You don't feel like anybody notices you.

You feel like you have no value.

All that today changes in the name of Jesus.

We command it to go in Jesus' name.

Lord, let your spirit right now come on these.

Lord, we believe that by your spirit, by relationship with Jesus, by relationship with brothers and sisters, loneliness turns into acceptance and the joy of the Lord can begin to flow.

And Lord, we just thank you that by your presence, Lord, by your presence alone, loneliness goes.

Holy Spirit, come.

In Jesus' name.

If you feel comfortable, would you just lift both hands to heaven?

Father, right now in the name of Jesus, we pray for the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Matter of fact, all of us need that.

Just lift your hands to heaven right now in Jesus' name, Lord.

We pray for the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

We ask you, Lord, to begin to speak to us about our place, our calling, our purpose, and the ways that you want to use us inside and outside this church.
