“Let’s Go” by Charlotte Gambill

Welcome to Gateway Churches Podcast.

Wherever you're tuning in from, we hope you're encouraged by today's message.

And now it's been entrusted to me to start a brand new series with you.

It's called Let's Go.

I think it's a perfectly entitled series.

There's something about this next chapter that's all about let's go.

Let's wake up from our slumber.

Let's get out from under the rock maybe we crawled under.

Let's shake some dust off our feet.

Let's get busy with the job that God's called us to do.

Let's get our life off pause and back onto play.

Let's go.

I think it's a call from the Holy Spirit to remind us all of why we are even on the planet.

So as I get ready to launch you into this series, let's invite the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do.

God, we thank you.

Just in the few moments of just talking about what's about to happen, a chapter that's about to be written.

We sense in the atmosphere this hovering of the Spirit saying, Let's go.

Let's go, church.

Let's wake up.

Let's mobilize.

Let's be the hands and feet of Jesus.

So God, I pray over these next few moments and over the next few weeks, as this message is uttered in small gatherings and in large on every different campuses.

God, that as the words are spoken, your spirit would move.

And as we sense the call to go, we would prompt your anointing that only goes with us when we say yes to you, God, you anoint our yes, you go with us.

And so we have nothing to fear in the going, for you've already gone before us.

So, Holy Spirit, would you help me as always get out of the way and would you have your way in Jesus' name?

Amen and amen.

Thank you, friend.

I want to encourage us this whole series that we're about to be in, which by the way has a devotional series that goes with it, that you can go on the website and you can click on and you can join the journey for 21 days of let's go together, let's be in this together and read verses together, read stories together, and get involved with this at a whole other level than just a service that you attend.

But this is all based around the verse in Mark 16, verse 15, when Jesus said, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Mark 16:15

There is something about serving God that means you have to sign up for a consistent life that is in motion.

There is nothing about serving God that is standing still, sitting down, being in a place where we have apathy, all lukewarmness about us.

We have an assignment to do, and as many of you today are getting ready to send your kids back to school, and you're all praising God that they are going back to school and that summer is over.

And as you get ready to send them back to school, because you know they need to go to school.

You know, just over the summer it has testified to your spirit all over again.

It is not good when you sit around all day with nothing to do.

It is not good when you need me to entertain you 24-7.

It is not good for your development when you are watching TV or on some kind of device.

You need to go back to school because I need you to grow.

I need you to learn, I need you to be doing something.

You need an assignment that I can assign for you.

And just how you feel that about your kids in the natural is how God feels about his kids in the spiritual.

It's not good for you to sit on your blessed assurance.

It is not good for you just to sit in a service once a month.

Hello?

Let me just stay there for a moment.

I'm happy if this is your once-a-month visitation.

Thank you for giving us the honor of your presence.

But church is not supposed to be a once-a-month visitation, it's supposed to be a community that you're involved in, that you're planted in, that you serve in, that you come to whenever the gatherings are happening.

You're a part of the gatherings.

Can we get back to actually being the church and showing up at church?

That's like saying to the school, I'm a once-a-month attender at this school.

I will honor you with my presence once a month, and you better make sure it's a good lesson on the one time that I show up in that month.

The school will be like, I don't think that's how this works.

I think you have to show up for all the lessons.

I think you have to come Monday all the way through to the Friday.

I I think you need to be at your desk, and I think you need to be in your classroom because that's how school works.

And somewhere in America, we all got this weird thinking that church was an optional extra that we can just jump in of and jump out of.

Can we begin to get back to what community looks like?

Can we begin to get back to what the gathering actually means?

I am a local church girl and I am seeking no cure.

It is the place that has grown me, it's the place that has given me my husband.

I met him in the church.

All you single people, don't be thinking God's gonna bring them around once a month.

You better get here on a regular basis.

You know what I'm saying?

The pastor in me is coming out.

I can't help it.

But when it's talking about us going, when we're gathering as a church, we gather so we can go, we come together so we can go out together.

We come and learn so we can go out and be those that help others know the truth.

And there was a religious person that was having a conversation with Jesus.

Maybe you would say he was like a church attender, he knew all the things about religion, he knew all the things about the ways and the laws of the of the religion, and uh, and so he was a little bit of an expert, a little bit of a know-it-all, thought he had it all down, and he has a conversation with Jesus.

And at the beginning of this series called Let's Go, I thought I would let Jesus do the talking.

So you can't get mad at me, you can only get mad at God, and I wouldn't suggest that you do that because it doesn't go well for you.

But let's look at Jesus dealing with a religious person about whether they should go or not go, whether they should reach out or not reach out.

So in Luke 10, we read this conversation that is well known to many of us, but let me read it to you in this context.

It says, one day an expert in religious law, a good, you know, knows the word, knows the law, stood up to test Jesus.

Said, Jesus, teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?

Look at Jesus turning it back on the expert.

Jesus replies, Well, you're an expert.

What does the law say?

How do you read it?

The man answered, Well, you must love the Lord, your God, with all your heart and all your soul, and all your strength and all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.

Right, Jesus told him.

Well, then do this and you will live.

But the man wanted to justify his actions.

He wants to know how much do I really have to do?

Like, like the message Bible says, he was looking for a loophole.

And he asked Jesus, well, who is my neighbor?

Like, define it for me.

I'm sure you don't mean I have to go to everyone.

I'm sure you're not sending me out there to everybody.

So Jesus replied with a story.

A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits.

They stripped him of his clothes, beating him up, and left him half dead beside the road.

By chance a priest came along, but when he saw the man laying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.

Temple assistant walked over, looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

And then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him.

Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them.

Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn where he took care of him.

And the next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, Take care of this man, and if the bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I am here.

Now, which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by the bandits?

Jesus asked.

And the man replied, Well, the one who helped him showed him mercy.

And Jesus said, Yes.

Now go and do the same.

I want to, for the next few moments, remind us of our mission, of our assignment, to be those that go to every person that comes across our pathway and be the hands and feet of Jesus to every person that we find, as it were, on the roadside of our lives.

That when we read verses like the verse of Mark that says, go into all the world, actually, I want to make it real simple for you.

You actually just need to start in your part of the world.

Because if you reach your part of the world and I reach my part of the world, and you reach your part of the world, between us we have covered all of the world, and for too long, we've had a lot of religious Christians that think that I'll just pray for someone to go to the other side of the world.

I can't possibly get to the other side of the world, but my prayers can.

That's good.

But do you know you have people at the side of your road every single day?

Do you have people at your grocery store every single day?

You have people at the hair salon every single day.

You have people in your community every single day who have been beaten up by life, who feel robbed by life, who are just like that man laying by the side of the road, desperate, not knowing where their help comes from, not knowing if anybody cares, not knowing if they'll even make it.

And Jesus answers this religious man with a picture that is so powerful to let him know there are no excuses.

Your assignment is right in front of you, but your choice is how you will respond.

In this story, there are three people that are seeing what everyone else is seeing.

They're seeing this man, and yet two become reactors.

What they see, they react to.

The priest and the temple assistant say, I don't know that I want to get involved.

I I don't know that I want to touch something unclean.

I don't know if I want that mess in my world.

And church, we can do exactly the same thing.

We can look at people and think, I don't know if I have the time.

I don't know if I really want that stuff in my life.

I don't know if I can actually help them.

I don't want to really mess up my schedule.

I don't really want this touching my home, my family.

There were two that were reactors, and the first responder was the last person you would expect, and he did not react, but he responded.

Church, we we are the first responders to hurting humanity.

We are God's first responder service on the earth.

Uh, we don't have first responders in England, that's not a term that we use.

When you call 911, they ask you who you want and they send whichever service you request.

When I was in America years ago and I had an accident, uh a friend of mine called 911 to get me help, and I was shocked because I'd hurt my arm, but the fire brigade showed up.

And I'm like, I am not on fire.

Uh is there something I didn't see?

I'm not on fire.

Why are the fire brigade here?

I don't need a hose or a hydrant of water, I don't understand.

And they began to explain.

No, all first responders are trained to arrive at the scene of a casualty and they know what to do.

They know how to solve the situation up to a point.

And sometimes in the church we've said, well, I'm not an evangelist, so it's not my job.

Well, I'm not very good with people that are suffering with anxiety, so that's not my job.

You know, I'm not really well trained to talk to people about addiction, so that's not my job.

Do you know Jesus?

Then it's your job.

Do you have the power of the Holy Spirit on the inside of you?

Then it's your job because we're all supposed to be first responders.

We got to get the church out of being reactors back to being responders.

You're a responder, uh, and we respond with the goodness of God, and we respond with the love of God, and we respond with the kindness of God, and we respond with the faith that comes with being a believer in God.

And there was only one that chose to respond.

And I'm asking today, church, will we get back to our assignment?

We're called to go, not to go to the other side and pretend we didn't see it.

Hello.

We're called to go.

And you might say, I don't know all the answers.

No, but you do know who is the answer.

You do know who has the peace that passes understanding.

You do know the one that saved you when you were a sinner and a wretch.

You do know the one that forgave you, you do know the one that healed a family member, you do know the one that gave you back a sense of dream and hope.

So you know a lot more than the rest of the world out there, which is why we need you to be first on the scene.

Hello?

Have you ever noticed when that first responder showed up in the environment that was freaking out because there was a lot of blood.

I'd severed my finger and it was hanging off and it was not pretty, and there was just a lot of panic.

But when the first responder showed up, they did not panic.

My panic did not affect them, my hysteria did not affect them.

You know why?

Because they knew stuff, they knew stuff that I didn't know.

They'd seen this a thousand times before.

First responders are able to be still in a panic situation because they know some things.

That's why the Bible says, be still and know.

Because when you know, you can walk into the unknown and you can keep your calm and you can keep your stillness and you can help people that are freaking out because you know some stuff.

You know some stuff.

We have a world right now that is messed up, broken, dysfunctional, hurting, lost, confused, and you work with them.

You stand at the water cooler next to them, you drop your kids off at the same school as them, and here you are, and you know some stuff that if they just knew a little bit of what you knew, they could be still in the situation that right now they're freaking out about.

Church, we gotta get back to going.

The enemy does not want you as a church to go, he wants you to sit down, feel sorry for yourself, stroke your skin, feel sorry for your wounds, share, talk, keep it all inside these four walls.

He does not want you to say, you know what, I'm done with sitting, I'm done with whining, I'm done with complaining, I have an assignment, I have a job to do.

Let's go.

Let's go.

Some of you, if you started to go, you'd have a lot less complaining.

You started to go, you'd have a lot less time on your hands.

You started to go, you see a whole world full of need where you've said, I don't think anyone needs me.

Are you kidding me?

Have you been outside recently?

There's a sea of need awaiting a people that need to wake up and go like this story that Jesus was illustrating through.

So, what makes us go?

What made the third person different than the first two?

Just three things I want to give you to think about today to help you go.

Number one, this person was activated by compassion.

He said that this Samaritan was traveling down the road, and he says, when he saw the man's condition, his heart went out to him.

He was moved.

The Samaritan had compassion for this person.

When we have no compassion, we have no compass.

We just go round and round in circles, talking about things that really, in the scheme of things, don't matter because we've lost our compass.

Our compass is the true north of direction for our lives, and compassion is your compass when you feel what God feels, when you see things the way God sees them, all of a sudden the true north kicks in for your life, and you can't help but be drawn to the places that other people are avoiding.

He didn't just see him with these eyes, he saw him with these eyes.

When we become judgmental, we lose the eyes of compassion.

When all we see is what disturbs us or what we disagree in, then we disqualify ourselves from even helping or healing.

But Jesus was always moved by compassion.

I could give you verse after verse.

Matthew 9, verse 36.

Matthew 9:36

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless.

Matthew 14, 14, when Jesus saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed the sick.

Matthew 15, 32, Jesus called the disciples, he said, I have compassion for these people.

They've been with me three days and have had nothing to eat.

Jesus was moved by compassion.

Where's your compassion at?

When you see that situation, what's the first thing you think?

Do you judge it?

Or do you allow God to show you what he sees?

Do you make a face value judgment?

Well, it's your fault.

You should have been in the right part of town, and clearly you're in the wrong part of town, and that's why you got robbed.

And it's not my problem, it's your problem.

Which approach do you take?

Or do you say, I remember the day when I looked a lot like you?

It was a different circumstance, it was a different situation, but somebody stopped and they saw me, not judged me, they saw me, and through the eyes of compassion, they were activated to do something about my situation.

If you're going to go, it begins by compassion being awakened in your heart all over again.

Compassion disturbs you, it provokes you, it ignites you, it niggles away at the inside of you.

You're sat in the restaurant ignoring and trying.

To have just time on your own with your wife or with your family, and something in your eye captures someone, and you know you're on an assignment, and you know that God put them there while you were in the same restaurant, and you have a choice to make.

Do I carry on eating my dinner and pretend I didn't see them?

Or do I allow the compassion in me to be awakened?

And God will drop things in your heart.

I have been in restaurants walk to complete strangers and just said one sentence that God gave me for them.

And walls have come down, tears have flooded, and you realize if God's using me to do that in a random circumstance, how many more of those people out there?

Is God trying to reach the church?

But we're all busy.

I'm gonna go see my friends.

I've got this thing arranged this week.

I got some things that I'm doing.

Like we're all so busy.

This thing is to bring you back.

You were sent supposed to be taking the good news of the gospel to those that have had a belly full of bad news.

Compassion disturbs you and it awakens you.

Compassion alone is not enough.

Compassion is what we're activated by, but then we have to be mobilized by connection.

This man, the soul, the Samaritan.

He didn't just say, Oh, I feel for you.

Oh, let me pray for you.

Pray is good, feeling is good, but what's better is doing something about it.

It says that he actually went to him and he bandaged his wounds, and he poured oil and wine on him, and then he put the on his own donkey in his own SUV.

It's been a long time since we got involved in anything.

I loved watching that story of John and Linda.

They could have just said, Well, we're moved.

That would have been good.

We're praying for the next generation to fall in love with Jesus.

That would have been good.

But what's better is we're gonna open our home, we're gonna show them they're loved, we're gonna have them in our space, we're gonna get a handsome literally making cinnamon rolls, and we're gonna feed them because we want them to know we're not just moved, we also want to make a connection.

So you need to get in a small group because you need connection, you need a point of connection, he had oil, and he had wine, oil was used to soothe wounds in that day, and wine was used to cleanse because you know we also have oil and wine, we have the oil of the Holy Spirit that soothes every troubled mind and troubled heart, and we have the wine of the blood of Christ, which cleanses every wound and forgives every sin.

We also have oil and wine.

You have the power of God on the inside of you.

You have the Holy Spirit on the inside of you.

The world just got darker, darker and darker, more despair, more addiction, people getting lost, and here we are, with the light of the world on the inside of us, and I was praying about you, church, and I was praying about this series, and this was the visual that I had in my heart as I was praying that if we'll go, if we won't just be moved by compassion or pray a nice prayer, but if we'll actually go and actually say, Hey, come with me, I'd love to bring you in my donkey, in my SUV, to a place where you can hear things that are gonna help you.

I'd love to tend to those wounds, I'd love to pour oil and wine into the situation.

It's like we would be bringing something that has no power all the way to the source.

And when that man was moved with compassion, now he said, I'm gonna do something so you don't just hear words that sound good, but you know what it looks like to be rescued.

And he began to help the men, and all of a sudden the power within him made a connection to someone without power, and a light came on.

And if you'll go into your school, into your community, you're gonna find these everywhere.

You're gonna find people that have potential but no power, dreams, but no presence of God, dying hopes, but no way of reviving them, feel beaten up, robbed by life, and don't know if anybody even knows that they're on the street feeling the way they are.

And you know what?

I know this is Dallas, and people paint a fake picture of what their life is really like.

You might not see the blood like this man could see, you might not see the stripped clothes like this man couldn't see, and you might not see the brokenness like this man can see, but don't let the Botox and the designer clothes and the well-dressed attire cause you to think something that God is not thinking because He's not seeing what you're seeing.

And if we could start to not just be moved, but now connect.

How many lights would go on in our city?

How many lights would go on in our community?

How many lights for some of you would go on in your own family?

If you just start to take the power source within you and allow it to connect with the potential around you, and as I was praying, I'm like saw lights going on all across this city and beyond.

All of a sudden, things awakening in people because we went as a community with the power that was on the inside of us.

He picks up the man, he touches the pain, he soothes the wound, he cleans up the mess, ensures that he goes to a place that's safe and he takes care of him.

And not just that, the third thing he does is he continues to be committed.

He didn't just say it, he doesn't just do it once, but this story says the next day he went back and he checks on him and he pays the bill.

If there's been one that's been run up, he stays committed.

You know, we live in a world where people are used to getting a handout, but then the hand disappears.

People are used to someone saying, Oh, I'll pray for you, but then they never see them again.

That's why we need community, that's why we need to build a place where we can build, bring people in and say, We're committed.

You'll find me here next week, and I'll be here the week after that, and I'll pick you up for this, and I'll be there with you for that, and I'm gonna pray, and I'm not just gonna pray in this moment, I'm gonna be praying in all of the moments.

We need to be those that are moved by compassion, connect people to the power of God and stay consistent in our commitment.

All of us were once that guy at the side of the road.

Jesus ends saying to the religious man, which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by the bandits?

And the man replied, Well, the one who showed him mercy.

And Jesus said, Yes.

Now go and do the same.

Church, I feel like Jesus is saying the same to us.

Go and do the same.

Well, where do I start?

At the side of the road.

Where do I start?

In my own neighborhood.

Well, how do I do it?

I was with someone the other day, they love God, been serving God for years and years and years.

I was shook.

Because they asked me such a simple question.

They were like, well, I see clients in my business every day, but I mean, how do I start to know?

Do I give them a track about Jesus?

Do I do I do I tell them to watch something?

Do like like do I do I tell them a YouTube clip from a church service?

I said, no, you ask.

You simply say, you know what, I'm a believer.

Is there anything I could pray for?

You're gonna find nine times out of ten, people are not gonna turn away free prayer.

Well, actually, my mom's got cancer.

I can pray for that.

Not only can I pray for that, I can connect on that.

I could bake something, I could make some cinnamon rolls, I could drop off a pallet of LaCroix.

It's not hard, it's oil, it's water, it's wine, it's comfort, it's kindness, it's faithfulness, it's who Jesus is.

You have everything you need.

Now let's go.

You are positioned as a church.

Now let's go.

Some have been saved so long, but somewhere you forgot your assignment, and you have to go back to school, back to the classroom, sit back at the desk and say, I think there's a lesson I skipped called compassion.

I think there's a lesson I skipped called loving my neighbor.

I think there's a lesson I skipped in my busyness called being your hands and feet, but I want to go back to school and I want to learn how to go, and I want to learn who to be.

And can I tell you what right now in your world feels huge?

It will find its rightful place when you begin to get back on mission.

See when purpose is not boss, problems are when going is not our first thought, complaining is when helping has come down the ladder because of our hurting, then hurting chooses the agenda for the day, and helping has no seat at the table.

He was moved by compassion at the state of humanity, and because God was moved by compassion because it was your life and it was mine, he didn't just say, I am moved, he said, I'm gonna connect, I'm gonna send my only son who is a source of light, so they can plug their empty lives into a place that will give them hope again.

And he didn't just say, I'll send him, but then I'm done.

He said, No, when he returns to heaven, I'm gonna give you someone that's gonna stay with you every single day.

I'm gonna give you the presence of the Holy Spirit, I'm gonna reside with you, I'm gonna be all over you, I'm gonna go before you, I'm not gonna leave you or forsake you.

Jesus models all of these things, and we are all recipients of all of these things.

So you might say, Charlotte, you could have gone easy on us, but I think sometimes we have it too easy.

We go home and we lay in our beds and we forget about the people on the street, we forget about the person locked in abuse, we think, well, that's not my problem, I got my own problems.

Imagine if Jesus would have done that.

I got a lot on right now, so I don't have time for you.

But even as he hung on a cross, he said to the thief, let's go.

You want to come with me?

Let's go.

He's hanging there, gasping the last breath, blood running down from the pressed down crown that they'd mocked him with of thoughts, nails in his hands, eyes wide open to a guy right next to him, a fief on a cross.

Jesus, this would have been a day we'd have said you don't need to worry about it.

But see, when you know what you have on the inside of you, you can't keep it to yourself anymore.

And I want to shake you in the nicest way possible.

I don't want to say, hey, wake up.

Hey, once a month, wake up.

Hey casual church attender, wake up.

Hey, I just fit God in when I can fit him in, wake up.

Because darkness is fully awake, and it will take what you leave behind, and it will it will cover what you decide not to have compassion over.

And we can't get mad at the devil if we are too busy in our own day-to-day schedule to do anything about the darkness around us.

So all across the house, let's stand to our feet.

Because the time has gone.

I love you, church.

Hear me.

I love you, church.

I love this house.

I've loved it for many years.

God loves you so much.

But what you have is too good to stay inside these four walls.

It's time to go.

It's time to go.

It's time to go.

Some of you need to start a small group.

Fill it with people in your community.

It's time to go.

Some of you need to start inviting people, it's time to go.

Some of you need to come back.

This is gonna be a shock.

Hold your breath.

Don't pass out on me.

Some of you need to come back tomorrow to the same service, but not on your own.

Because there's someone you know that is that person at the side of the road, and you need to connect tonight, put them in your SUV tomorrow, and bring them to a place that has oil and wine.

If we're gonna be doers of this word, that's what it looks like.

Sprite we are, close your eyes.

God, we don't even know where to begin.

There's not enough ways to say thank you for the way that you were moved with compassion towards our lives.

Because when life had beaten us up, spit us out, tore our hearts out, trampled our dreams, messed with our minds, corroded our bodies, invaded our souls.

You did not stand back.

You did not cross to the other side, you did not walk by because it was too much or too dirty or too hard.

But you came right up to us, and with your own blood you cleansed us, and with your eye oil you surrounded and filled us, and in your own arms you carried us.

Where would we be without you?

And yet we stand in this moment so aware of what we did not deserve, so aware of the grace that is amazing, and yet we stand sobered in the same moment that that is now our assignment, that you said that we were to go, that you said that we were to go into the world to spread the good news, to find the lost, to minister to the broken, to heal those with your words that had no hope to show them there is a peace that passes understanding.

God forgive us where we've made it about us.

When you said you'd leave the 99 just for the one.

God, I pray this would not just be a series, but it would be an assignment.

I pray this would not just be a few messages, but it would be a recommissioning of this house.

That this house was made to go, that we are your hands and feet.

We are the gateway itself to the presence of God.

That is why we do what we do, so that more people will know you.

Awake the sleeper.

Disturb the comfortable.

Rattle the one that has been unrattled for too long.

Shake the settles.

Kip out the one that has become stagnant.

God, however you do it, just do it.

And as we just hold for a moment, church, just let God speak to you right where you're at.

Names are gonna come to mind, faces, some from years ago.

People two dollars down, people in your own family, they're gonna come to mind in these next few hours and days.

Don't discard it, don't dismiss it.

But if you're in the room right now and you say, I'm the Samaritan, I'm the I'm the guy at the side of the road, I'm the one that needs a good Samaritan today, I'm the one that needs someone to cross over the road, I'm the one that is broken, I'm the one that feels beaten, I'm the one that feels lost, I'm the one that feels confused.

If that is you today, then we want to be the good Samaritan to your life.

We want to let you know you don't have to stay that way.

We want to pick you up with the arms of Jesus and we want to let you know God has a purpose for your life.

We want to connect you to the light today and pull you out of the darkness.

So if right now you say that's me, I need forgiveness, I need salvation, then right where you are, as the rest of the church are praying, just put your hand up, say that's me today.

I I need forgiveness, I need a savior, I need a new beginning.

I I've ended up in a place, I don't know how we even got there, but today, for whatever reason, I'm here and I'm responding.

You gotta respond in this moment.

Just like that man got on the back of that donkey and he let someone lead him in a way that was to life today.

If that is you, respond in this moment.

With that hand you just raised, just put it right on your heart.

God, you see every person that just reached out a hand, every life that's saying right now they need you.

God, I pray in this moment they would sense your presence.

I pray in this moment that there will be forgiveness for their sin.
