Hi, and welcome to Venture Church Online. My name is
-
Kelsey and I'm our online campus pastor. We're so glad
-
that you're joining us. Drop a comment below of where
-
you're streaming from. We would love to interact with you.
-
We hope that you enjoy today's service.
-
I want to thank you for coming to Venture Church
-
this morning. If I've never met you before, I'm Brandon.
-
I am the.
-
Lead pastor of the church. I'd love the opportunity to
-
meet you. If you're new, I'll be hanging out in
-
the lobby after the service. Please come up introduce yourself
-
to me. I'd love to shake your hand, get to
-
know your name, and all of those things.
-
As you can tell, there's a lot of construction going
-
on around this place.
-
We are deep in the midst of our facility expansion.
-
Every week you come, something new has happened. Morgan mentioned
-
in between the services that the platforms were put on
-
all the balcony seating, so I had to sprint up there.
-
It's crazy how fast this is happening.
-
We are believing that this entire expansion will be completed
-
by thanks Giving at worst, in time for all of
-
our Christmas Eve services. So for those of you that
-
had to wait for an usher to find your seat,
-
you can sit in the balcony hopefully on Christmas Eve,
-
because we'll have three hundred seats up there also. But
-
we are trying to do our final push of raising
-
nine hundred thousand dollars for this facility expansion.
-
We started that a month ago and I'm happy to.
-
Say we have reached one hundred and eighty thousand dollars,
-
so that is in a month. My goal is for
-
the month of September, so we stove today. We still
-
have a few days that we would break two hundred
-
thousand dollars. So if you are ready to give, want
-
to encourage you to give at some point today this week.
-
You can scan one of the QR codes that's in
-
the lobby and it will pull up a directory and
-
if you'd like to specifically sponsor an area that's being built,
-
we'd love to have you do that, or you can
-
just give directly, but all those proceeds go to help
-
us finish this nine hundred thousand dollars goal that we
-
have to finish this project.
-
And it's happening, whether we.
-
Like it or not, really fast, so it's good Everybody,
-
bay your heads, close your eyes. I want to ask
-
everyone to repeat this prayer after me. Everyone say, Dear Jesus,
-
speak to my heart, change my life in Jesus' name.
-
Amen.
-
Today, I'm continuing our series break Free. We're talking about
-
breaking free of strongholds that you might have in your
-
life and people have in your life. Last week, if
-
you weren't here, I really encourage you to go back
-
and listen to the podcast to the message. It was
-
a very intense message. I talked about the stronghold of
-
hidden sin. For some of you, I know that that
-
message hit very hard, but I believe that one of
-
the biggest strongholds that we have in our life is what.
-
We're hiding inside.
-
And I shared some really practical steps on how we
-
can overcome the stronghold of hidden sin. We confess, then
-
we repent, and then we find someone that we know
-
loves us, cares about us to hold us accountable. So
-
today won't be quite as heavy, and it's going to
-
be a shock by the question that I'm going to
-
ask you to begin with.
-
This is a rhetorical question, so please don't shout out answers,
-
not that you would want to.
-
But what is the biggest mistake you've ever made? I
-
knew you weren't going to want it answer it, did
-
you know that? Sometimes to break the ice, when I'm
-
meeting new people, I'll ask him this question. I will say,
-
what is the worst thing you've ever done?
-
Some of you are like, that's why I avoid meeting
-
with you.
-
The first thing you're gonna ask me is what's the
-
worst thing you've ever done. I'm hoping it's gonna, you know,
-
be something that stupid that you did while you were
-
in high school that you know it's kind of in
-
the past, but think of that one thing that you
-
wish you could do over that if you had a
-
do over, this is your do over. A while ago,
-
I met with a guy in our church. I share
-
this with permission, who'd made a terrible mistake and he
-
hidden his mistake. Typical story. I've heard it a million times.
-
I was in the wrong place at the wrong time,
-
and I had too much to drink. Instead of going home,
-
I stayed longer than I should and I had a
-
few more drinks. I ended up flirting with a girl.
-
My defenses were down, and he found out the next
-
day that he had slept with a prostitute. Told me
-
that I tried to pretend it didn't happen. I went
-
to church, went to one of the revival nights, came forward,
-
wept at the altar, had a pastor pray for me.
-
But I was consumed with guilt for weeks afterwards because
-
of my hidden sin. By the time he'd met with me.
-
He met with me the day after he finally confessed.
-
To his wife.
-
Well, we set them up for several months of counseling. Again,
-
I share this with permission. After months of counseling, their
-
marriage was salvage.
-
Thanked the Lord. But he kept telling me.
-
PB every time we would get in a fight, every
-
time our kids were struggling, said anytime anything went bad
-
in our finances, I always felt it was all my
-
fault because of what I had done. And he said
-
I felt so guilty, and I felt so much shame.
-
So, Pastor Brandon, I'm so a shamed.
-
Shame is this feeling that we have disappointed ourselves, that
-
we have disappointed those that we love. Shame is that
-
sense that we have disappointed God. I think there's many
-
of you today the stronghold that the enemy has you
-
bound in is the stronghold of shame.
-
You see, what the enemy loves to do is the enemy.
-
Loves to say God didn't really forgive you of that,
-
you haven't really made that right, that is still destroying
-
your life. And he loves to heap shame upon sin
-
that Jesus has already set you free of. Loves to
-
overwhelm us with shame. The Bible has a lot to
-
say say about the word shame. In fact, the word
-
shame comes up very frequently in the Bible. In the Hebrew,
-
the Hebrew word for shame is bosh. With that word bosh,
-
it's grouped together with shame. It's grouped together with some
-
other words like disconcerted, disappointed, confounded, bound together, this word
-
gives us a sense of sin and a sense of guilt. Now,
-
guilt and shame are uniquely different. You see, guilt is judicial.
-
Guilt is I did it, I'm guilty, I was found guilty.
-
But shame is relational, It is emotional. Shame is beyond
-
a sense of ownership and responsibility. Shame at its worst
-
can be almost consuming and paralyzing. I think we've all
-
had moments where we face shame. I'm gonna read you
-
some verses. I'm gonna rattle them off, but their verses
-
throughout the Old Testament and New Testament that describe what
-
happens with shame. And as I read these verses, you were,
-
You're probably gonna think, I remember that, I remember when.
-
I felt that way. There's others of you.
-
You were gonna say, that is exactly the way that
-
I feel right now. And it might be a hint
-
that the enemy has bound you in the stronghold of shame.
-
Jeremiah three twenty four. I think they're gonna get the
-
verses up. I'm gonna rattle them off really quick, so
-
let's see if they can keep up. Shame is a
-
wild beast Jeremiah three twenty five. Shame is like a
-
garment that covers us Jeremiah twenty vers eighteen.
-
Jeremiah really struggled with shame.
-
Shame is a lifelong torment or a blight against us.
-
Hebrews two ten says shame is sin against our soul.
-
Isaiah thirty says shame is connected to our defeat.
-
Isaiah fifty four. Shame is overwhelming disapproval.
-
Isaiah six says shame leads to destruction Isaiah forty seven.
-
Shame is a constant threat. Daniel Chapter twelve says shame
-
is full of everlasting contempt. Proverbs thirteen, Shame leads to poverty.
-
Proverbs eighteen, shame is connected.
-
To our folly.
-
Proverbs chapter nine says shame leads to nothingness. Some of you,
-
you hear those verses, shake your head in agreement. So
-
the question isn't have we experienced shame? I think we've
-
all had times where we have done something that we
-
know we shouldn't have done.
-
Maybe we haven't repented of it.
-
So we're still feeling an extreme amount of guilt and
-
sin because of conviction from the Holy Spirit. But then
-
in addition to that, there's some of us that are
-
here and shame is coming because the enemy is constantly
-
lying to you. You have been forgiven, you've been set free.
-
What does Jesus say? He says, if you repent, I'll
-
restore you that you may serve me.
-
In fact, the Psalms say, as far as the east is.
-
From the west, so far he has removed our transgressions
-
from us. The Bible actually tells us that God chooses
-
to forget our sin.
-
Isn't that amazing. Now, that is sin that we have
-
repented of.
-
He chooses to forget, that's what makes him God, and
-
you and I not God. Have you noticed that we
-
can't forget it, forget anything? Like I always joke that
-
I can't remember anyone's name. I'm so embarrassed. I so
-
badly want to learn the names of every single person
-
in our church. But like names come in my brain
-
and then they quickly escape. But if you do something
-
to wrong me, I will never forget you.
-
Isn't that the way we work? How do you overcome
-
the stronghold of shame?
-
Me?
-
Shame is something that we all deal with. How we
-
overcome it?
-
The Bible gives us some clues in Isaiah chapter fifty.
-
This was a prophecy about the coming of Jesus, and
-
it tells us about when Jesus comes, this is what
-
he will bring for you and I. Isaiah fifty verse six,
-
it says, I offered my back to those who beat me,
-
my cheek to those who pulled out my beard. I
-
did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. Because
-
the sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore,
-
I've set my face like flint, and I know I
-
will not be put to shame. It is this promise
-
that when Jesus comes, he is willing to take our
-
shame upon himself. The prophet Joel said this in Joel
-
two twenty five. Promise from God, as it pertains to
-
our mistakes, says, I will repay the years the locusts
-
have eaten, the great locust, the young locust, the other locusts.
-
The locust swarm my great army that I have sent
-
among you. You will have plenty to eat until you
-
are full, and you will praise the name of the
-
Lord your God, who has worked wonders for you.
-
Here it is never.
-
Again will my people be shamed. Then you will know
-
that I am in Israel, that I am the Lord
-
your God, that there is no other God. Never again
-
will my people be shamed. You see, God wants to
-
restore us, and he wants to take away our shame.
-
Is the story in the Life of gi Jesus. It's
-
in John chapter eight. Here's the story. At dawn, Jesus
-
appeared again in the temple courts. This is verse two,
-
where all the people gathered around him and he sat
-
down to teach them, the teachers of the law and
-
the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They
-
made her stand before the group, and they said to Jesus, teacher,
-
this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In
-
the Law of Moses, it's commanded us to stone such
-
a woman.
-
Now, what do you say? And we're told their motive.
-
They were using this question as a trap in order
-
to have a basis for accusing Jesus talk about people
-
heaping shame upon you. Can you imagine being this woman?
-
I mean, Jesus is in a setting like this, he's
-
teaching in the temple courts, and they grab a woman
-
and they drag her in front of Jesus and everyone
-
he's teaching and show her say, this woman has had
-
an affair. What are you gonna do about it? Are
-
you gonna say anything?
-
What are you going to do?
-
And Jesus is cool, This is maybe the coolest response ever.
-
Here's what he does. Jesus meant down and he started
-
right in the ground with his finger, says, They kept
-
questioning him. Does she ever wonder what he was drawing
-
in the ground? I wonder if you like, wrote a
-
smiley face. But eventually, it says, he straightened up, and
-
he said to them, let any one of you who
-
is without sin be the first to throw a stone
-
at her.
-
Then he went back down.
-
He finished drawing, and says, at this those who heard
-
begin to go away, one at a time, the older
-
ones first, until it was only Jesus with the woman
-
still standing there. Jesus stood up and he asked her, woman,
-
where are your users? Where are they? Has no one
-
condemned you? She responds, no one, sir, And then Jesus says,
-
neither do I condemn you, But I added the butt
-
in there.
-
Go now and leave your life of sin.
-
If you repent, I'll restore you that you can serve
-
me your sin I am capable of forgiving. Now going,
-
You're no one's condemning you, now going, Just don't sin anymore?
-
How do we deal with the stronghold of shame? How
-
do we overcome it? You have to remember you are
-
a child of God, if you have repented of your sins,
-
if you have invited Jesus into your life, if you've
-
prayed the prayer and you meant the prayer, if you've
-
been baptized and you are different.
-
If you have really given your.
-
Life to Christ, you are a child of Godah, which
-
means you are forgiven. How do you overcome shame?
-
You have to.
-
Remember who you are when the devil constantly reminds you
-
of all of your mistakes, constantly reminds you of everything
-
you've done, when the devil tries to heap shame.
-
Upon you, remember who you are.
-
You are a child of God, you are forgiven.
-
That's how you overcome shame.
-
There's there's a verse in Corinthians one Corinthians six'. Nine
-
people love to use this. Verse they love to use
-
this verse to attack. People they love to use this
-
verse really to condemn.
-
People And i'm gonna read with this.
-
Verse these two verses, say and most of us are guilty.
-
Of one of these. Things so it's it's. Heavy here's
-
what it.
-
Says so the words Of paul One corinthians six,' nine
-
do you not know wrongdoers will not inherit the Kingdom.
-
Of god do not be deceived neither the, sexually.
-
Immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers nor men who have sex,
-
with men, nor thieves nor, the greedy, nor drunkers, nor
-
slanderers nor swindlers will Inherit the Kingdom.
-
OF god, i mean it's literally.
-
Just called out eighty percent. Of us, he says you
-
won't inherit the Kingdom. Of god the problem is oftentimes
-
people quote, those verses and there are, true verses but
-
they leave out the, next verse.
-
Which Is actually. Paul's point paul's.
-
Point Is, without jesus this is who. You Are without jesus,
-
forgiving you setting, you free, delivering you you are not
-
worthy of Inheriting the Kingdom.
-
Of god.
-
But first john one to nine says that if we confess,
-
our sins he is faithful and justin will forgive us
-
our sins and cleanse us and purify us from. All
-
unrighteousness So, without jesus.
-
You're right if, we don't we don't Inherit the Kingdom.
-
Of God. But jesus and that's the.
-
Important part this whole portion of scripture is about.
-
Verse eleven.
-
So because of all the stuff, you've done you are
-
not personally worthy to Inherit the Kingdom.
-
Of God. But jesus.
-
And, it says and this is what some of, You
-
were but you, were washed you, were sanctified.
-
You.
-
Were justified what is that word justified mean it means
-
you were, declared innocent you, were absolved you.
-
Were acquitted that is who. You were.
-
But Because of jesus you, were washed you, were sanctified
-
you were justified in the name Of The Lord jesus
-
christ and by the spirit Of.
-
Our god when the.
-
Devil tries to heap shame, on you remember that's who
-
you were.
-
To what. You did but you, were washed you, Were
-
sanctified you were justified because Of what. Jesus did in,
-
other words.
-
You were legally declared innocent in the Eyes.
-
Of god don't allow shame to be a stronghold you find.
-
YOURSELF in, i mean if you're dealing with shame and
-
conviction because of, hidden sin DO what i suggested. Last, week,
-
confess repent. Get, accountability, confess repent. Get accountability if we confess,
-
our sins he is faithful in justin will forgive us
-
our sins and purify us from. All unrighteousness if the
-
devil continues to keep shame, upon you remember who.
-
You were THAT'S who, i was but NOT who i.
-
Am NOW who i am NOW is i am a Child.
-
Of god i've, been, washed. Sanctified justified i've been declared
-
innocent in the Name. OF jesus i want everybody to.
-
Stand up you were supposed to get a communion emblem
-
when you. Came, in uh raise. Your hand if you didn't,
-
GET one i predicting it's half.
-
Of you, so there raise your.
-
Hand up the ushers are gonna sprint around really quick and.
-
Give it.
-
Whenever we, receive communion this is our opportunity.
-
To pause.
-
This is our opportunity to stop in the middle of,
-
the craziness the busyness of everything.
-
In life this is.
-
Our opportunity to, ask OURSELVES am i Right? With jesus
-
are Me and? Jesus good this is that that moment
-
where we get to just pause and make sure that
-
we feel right. With him for some, of us this
-
is a moment where we evaluate maybe something that. We've
-
hidden for others, of us it may be that moment
-
where we're we're thinking about this is the shame that
-
has been heaped.
-
On me.
-
But communion is that moment where where we can just
-
kind of lay it all Out, to jesus where we
-
can just pour out our Heart. To jesus and what
-
this symbolizes is it literally Symbolizes what paul talked About In.
-
First corinthians it literally symbolizes us, Being washed it symbolizes us,
-
being sanctified and it symbolizes us.
-
Being justified so HERE'S what i want.
-
To do peel off, the top grab, the cracker peel
-
off the, next layer grab. The juice hold the two
-
pieces of these emblems in, your HAND.
-
And i want you to close your eyes for the next.
-
Several moments take some Time.
-
With jesus this is between You, and jesus no one.
-
Looking around this is your moment, To, say jesus will
-
you forgive me? Of that If you repenny restores you
-
that you can. Serve him this is your moment, TO
-
say I know i shouldn't have. DONE that I know
-
i shouldn't have. SAID that i shouldn't have treated this person.
-
This way will you forgive me.
-
If you confess he's faithful and just to forgive you
-
of your sins and purify us of.
-
All unrighteousness this is your moment, To, SAY jesus i
-
need you to, wash me.
-
SANCTIFY me i want to. Feel justified.
-
Just take.
-
A moment.
-
It's your chance to get him to take away that shame.
-
Press in.
-
Some. Of you that's what you need, to say and, You,
-
SAY jesus i know you forgave, me THIS but i
-
still feel shame. For it we take away. MY shame
-
i rebuke that Shame in. Jesus' name search, MY Heart,
-
o god test and know my, anxious thoughts.
-
And see if there's any wickedness, in me and if,
-
there is lead me in the way. Of everlasting on
-
the Night that jesus, was.
-
Betrayed He celebrated passover with, his disciples and After the,
-
passover meal he took a piece of bread.
-
And he broke it into, many pieces and.
-
He passed a piece of the bread to each one of,
-
his disciples and, he says this represents my body that
-
is broken. For you, he says whenever you receive of
-
this or, remember me.
-
Let's receive of the. Body together in just, a moment
-
we're going to drink the. Cup TOGETHER.
-
And i love to remind you that this, Represents grace grace's,
-
unmerited favor meaning you didn't, deserve it you didn't, earn
-
it but you are giving it because someone loved you
-
enough to give you. This gift but this represents what
-
it is that, washed us what it is that, purified
-
us what it is that. Justified us and the thing
-
about communion is every time we receive, of it it
-
gives us that moment where we drink of the cup
-
and we get this Image of jesus' blood.
-
Literally washing, us clean like all.
-
That stuff is, going away that we are declared.
-
Legally innocent because.
-
Of Him so i'm gonna pray. For THIS when i,
-
say amen we'll receive the, cup together and then our
-
worship team's gonna conclude, the service leading.
-
Us in a.
-
Worship song and as we do this, WORSHIP song i
-
want to encourage you to press in and just have
-
him take away all. The shame let's leave the stronghold of.
-
Shame here let's go home. Free Today, dear jesus we
-
thank you that if, we repent you, forgive us that you,
-
wash us that you, sanctify us, purify us, justify.
-
Us that you make.
-
Us innocent, And, NOW lord i pray that we would,
-
feel it we, feel innocent that we would, feel forgiven that.
-
We would feel set free.
-
And Delivered, and lord as we drink of your, CUP
-
today i pray that there is a sense of your
-
spirit covering all of, our sins that there is an
-
overwhelming sense of forgiveness covering all of these. People Today in, Jesus',
-
