Kingdom Divided | Pastor Brandon Beals | Venture Church

Today. If you're new to Venture, I've never had the

opportunity to meet you. I'm Brandon. I'm the lead pastor

of the church. If you're new, I'll be hanging out

in the lobby afterwards. Please come up, introduce yourself to me.

Fist bump me, say h, I love the opportunity to

meet you. Easter two weeks. I've quoted this stat for

a long time. Now I finally want you to listen

to it. Eighty five percent of people say if they

were invited to an Easter service, they'd attend. Let's be

the church that invites people to the Easter services. So

on your way out after the service, we're going to

give you invite cards. You can take these, take as

much as you want. Please don't just leave them in

your car. Please hand them to your friends, neighbors, co workers.

Invite people to Easter. We've added. My staff is wishing

we'd have added more, but we added one extra Easter service,

as you can tell by our ten am service. I

would advise you if you don't want to struggle with

parking finding a seat, you should come to either the

extra service that we planned on Saturday or the eight

thirty or eleven thirty. This service is going to be

really crowded. But four services on Easter, let's invite people.

We also have yard signs. There's still probably like forty

some odd of those left. And I gotta be honest

driving around town seeing the fact that venture has littered

these signs all over the communities that we all live in.

Blesses my heart, just please make sure the week after

Easter you then pick up those signs so I don't

get yelled at by a lot of people. All right,

how many of you have ever heard the phrase could

it would have? Should have? Could it would have? Should have?

It's this idea that man, if I could hop in

a time traveling DeLorean and go back to nineteen eighty five,

here's the things I'd change. Here's the things that I

do differently. Oftentimes were faced with the result of one

of our choices, and we live in this could it

would have should have? Jesus in Mark chapter three, verse

twenty four, made this great statement, and I am convinced

he was thinking about the time of Solomon when he

said it. And here it is, if a kingdom is

divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. I want to

ask everyone to buy your heads, close your eyes. I

want to ask you to repeat this prayer after me.

Everyone say, Dear Jesus, speak to my heart, change my

life in Jesus' name. Amen. Today is the culmination of

a series we started at the beginning of this year

on the life of Solomon. I want to say, first off,

I've never preached through Solomon before, so this has been

very insightful for me as your pastor. I hope that

you've learned. I hope if you're new to this whole

faith thing and you've jumped into Venture in the middle

of this series, I hope I've communicated it in a

way that you got a lot out of it also.

But I want to take a moment and give you

a journey through the last two years. So, if you've

been a part of Venture over the last two years,

we've taken you from the very beginning of history to

this moment, and in five minutes or less, using some

old classic stained glass window pictures, I want to take

you through history that I believe is critical to this

moment in the life of Solomon. So it begins with

a guy by the name of Abraham. There he is

I think that's him. Abraham has an encounter with God.

God says, Abraham, I want you to leave everything that

you know, and I want you to travel to this

place that is unknown. But if you do that, Abraham,

I have a promise for you that I'm gonna make

you your family a nation, that I'm gonna bless you

and your descendants. And in fact, Abraham, all the people

in the world will be blessed because of you if

you're willing to leave what is known and travel to

what is unknown. So Abraham packs up his family and

he heads to an area that he's never been before.

The whole time he's holding on to a promise from

God that God is gonna bless his descendants. Crazy thing

about Abraham and his wife Sarah, Sarah was barn. God

said I'm gonna bless your descendants, and they couldn't have children. Finally,

in their eighties, pause for a moment. In their eighties,

they have a son by the name of Isaac. This

is the child of promise. Isac eventually has fraternal twin boys,

Jacob and Esau. And Jacob and Esau from the moment

they were born fought against each other and it leads

to this moment where Jacob, the younger brother, tricks Esau,

the older brother, out of his inheritance rights and his

birthright promise, and Esau makes this statement. This tells you

how badly these brothers got along. Esau makes a declaration

that after my father passes away and we're done mourning him,

I'm going to kill my brother Jacob. Jacob finds out

about this, and he literally escapes to another land. And

while Jacob's there, he has twelve sons. Now, these twelve

sons end up becoming the twelve tribes of Israel. Of

his twelve sons, are you with me so far? The

youngest son's name is Joseph, and like many of the

youngest in the family, Joseph was spoiled rotten. The older

siblings incredibly jealous. If you are the oldest in your family,

you know what it's like. It's like when your parents

had you, they weren't ready to have kids, they were broke.

It's like all of a sudden you showed up and

they didn't even know what they were doing. It's like

no one should have given your parents children at that

point in time. But then by the time the youngest

is born like they got a totally different set of

parents than you grew up with. It's like they grew

up with friends instead of like tyrants leading them Like

all of a sudden, your parents are rich when they

have them. It's just a radically different experience when you're

the baby of the family. Well, Joseph was adored. He

was Jacob's favorite, and his brothers were so envious of

him that they hated him. They eventually sold him as

a slave to slave traders, and Joseph ends up in Egypt.

The crazy thing is Joseph was a man of God,

and due to his faithfulness to God and his hard

work through amazing circumstances, God elevates Joseph to second in

charge of all of Egypt. At this point in history,

there is a massive world wide faminine drought, and this

faminine drought is causing all of their livestock to die,

their crops to die. But Joseph had a word from

God seven years beforehand that this drought was going to

come and that he was to store up reserves in

Egypt to provide food for really the nations. So people

from all around the world traveled to Egypt because they

were the only nation with food, and Jeff was in

charge of distributing this food. Well, lo and behold, the

Israelites come, and his eleven brothers and their families come

to Egypt for supplies. There's this. It's a great story.

You can go back listen to the sermons that I

did in Genesis on this. But God ends up reuniting

Joseph with his brothers, He gets reunited to his father.

He eventually moves his entire family to Egypt to survive

the famine. At this point in history, it ends the

Book of Genesis. There are seventy let's remember that seventy

Israelites in Egypt. Fast forward to the time of Moses.

Four hundred years later. There are now a million Israelites

slaves in Egypt. You know the story. The Exodus happens.

God miraculously leads them out of Egypt under the leadership

of Moses. Then they spend the next forty five years

wandering around aimlessly, waiting to get into the promised land.

Moses dies, Joshua is the new leader. They eventually go

in and occupy what is now Israel. Are you with me? Okay?

Good for the next three hundred and twenty five years.

Israel lives under the period of the Judges. This was

a time where God did not have them have a king.

God wanted to be their king, but he gave them

a judge that would protect them lead them through difficult circumstances.

And that was God's intent. But at the end of

the Period of Judges, the people were envious of all

the nations around them. They said, we want a king

of our own. We want a king that we can

look up to, we want a king that we can

point to. And God kept telling them I want to

be your king. I want to be your king. And

they're like, no, we want a king like all these

other nations. And God warns them. He says, if you

have a king, that king will be ruthless. That king

will tax you, that king will force you to work

for him. You will serve that king. Are you sure

you want a king? They said, give us a king.

So God gave them Saul. They had Saul for about

forty years, and eventually the pinnacle of Israel happens and

they have King David. David leads Israel for an additional

forty years, and eventually David dies turns over the kingdom

to his son Solomon, who we've been talking about for

the last several months. Solomon rules Israel for forty five years.

I shared with you several weeks ago that at halftime

of Solomon's reign he has an encounter with God. And

at halftime, for all intents and purposes, Solomon was blowing

away the competition. He had built a massive lead in

this game. He built the temple over a seven year

period of time. He built the palace complex over an

additional thirteen year period of time. God meets him at

halftime and gives him a promise. He says, Solomon, if

you serve me all the days of your life, if

you worship me, worship me alone, your descendants will always

be on this throne and you'll be blessed, he says.

But in One Kings nine, verse six, he says, but

if you were to your descendants turn away from me,

do not observe my decrees I have given you, and

go off and serve other gods, then I will cut

off Israel from the land I've given them, and will

reject this temple. Solomon, if you serve me, everything's going

to be great. But if you fall into idle worship,

this ends badly. So Solomon spends the next twenty years

after that encounter with God building his own kingdom. He

gives into the addiction of success and the addiction of pleasure.

Like we've talked about the last couple weeks, there's a

line that Pastor Morgan used last week that I thought

was so good, I'm gonna steal it and claim it.

And it is this understanding that success in itself isn't bad.

Like there's nothing wrong with you being successful. It's nothing

wrong with you wanting to build a business and how

that business be a success. But I will tell you

success makes a terrible God. There is nothing wrong with pleasure.

Pleasure is a gift from God within the confines with

which God allows it. But pleasure makes a terrible God. Solomon,

by the point where we begin again, now has seven

hundred wives from all these different nations in the world

first Kings eleven, verse four. As Solomon grew old, his

wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart

was not fully devoted to the Lord, his God, as

the heart of David, his father had been. Verse six.

Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and

he did not follow the Lord completely as David his

father had. I want to just share with you a

few of the gods that Solomon worshiped. In addition to Yahweh,

he worshiped Ashterith. And why would he do this is

because when he would marry these foreign wives, they brought

in their culture, their traditions, and their upbringings, and Solomon

would begin to participate in their worship services. And he

worshiped Ashtith, who is the goddess of the Sidonians, the

goddess of fertility. Worship of Ashterith included exorbitant feasts, gorging

yourself at feastsrifices, and temple prostitution. But there's two gods

that Solomon begin to worship, Molek, the god of the Ammonites,

and Timosh, the god of the Moabites. Why do I

point these two out because the worship of these gods

did not exist in Israel, and tell Solomon introduce the

people to it. I point this out because the worship

of these gods involved child sacrifice, human sacrifice. So not

only with Solomon forbidden from Idol worship, he influenced the

nation of Israel to be involved in idle worship. What

we know about the worship of these two gods. For

generations after Solomon, they tried to remove this type of

worship from Israel. Kings tried, priests, tried, prophets tried unsuccessfully.

The worship of these gods was not stripped from Israel

until they ended up exiled in Babylon, and Solomon the

King warned at halftime of his life, don't give into

idle worship. Not only gives into idle worship, but influences

the whole nation to be involved in this type of worship,

and the whole time his wisdom never left him. We

heard about that a couple weeks ago. Solomon is living

like the devil. He's living this horrible life. He's a

horrible influence. But the gift he was given from God

that elevated his leadership, that caused the success that he

has to be at this level the whole time he's

living this way, he still has his gift. And Solomon, deceived,

like many of us were something similar happens, went around thinking,

must not be that bad. I mean, I'm doing all

these things that are probably questionable, but the wisdom hasn't

left me. Be careful when you believe your own press clippings.

Solomon himself wisely made this statement. It's Proverbs twenty verse seven.

This is going to be a familiar verse to anybody

that's been around venture for any length of time, because

I quote this verse every time I do a child

dedication in front of the church. Solomon said these words.

He said, the righteous lead blameless lives. Blessed are their

children after them. Solomon said that what does that mean

for you and I today? It means that if we

honor Jesus with the way that we live our life,

if we're willing to choose the hard way, the way

of integrity, If when the opportunity to give in to

the addiction of success or the addiction of pleasure, comes,

we choose to deny ourself, pick up our cross, and

follow Jesus. If we are willing to choose the hard way,

God's word promises us a blessing for our children. Now,

I do want to say this where the opposite will apply.

Sometimes this doesn't say that the opposite applies. In other words,

that if you choose to give in to pleasure, if

you choose to give in to the addiction of success.

If you choose to live a life that is not

aligned with what a Christian life should be, it doesn't

guarantee a curse on your children. All I know is

that if you serve Jesus faithfully, guarantee is a blessing

for your kids. Why is this man who ever lived

said those words in church? I want to just say this,

If you won't serve Jesus for you, if you won't

serve Jesus because it is the right thing to do,

will you serve Jesus for your kids? If you as

a parent, like I'll tell you the heart of a parent.

If there is something that I knew that I could

do that would guarantee a blessing for my children, I

would do that thing. It doesn't necessarily mean that the

opposite applies, but sometimes we don't want to accept that

our actions negatively affect our kids. Now, I say that

very cautiously because what I don't want you to do

is you to leave this place and say, Pastor Brandon,

I went to church. Man, he just heaped shame on me.

He just heaped guilt and judgment on me. Hey, I

am not saying that because you choose to live for

yourself that it is guaranteed to hurt your kids. I

am not saying that. Do not quote me as saying that.

All I'm saying is that if you live for Jesus,

your kids are blessed. If you choose to not live

for Jesus, you're rolling the dice with your kids. I

don't know if an immoral life negatively affects our kids.

I do know that it removes a guaranteed blessing from them.

So brings us to Solomon. How did God feel about

everything that Solomon was doing? Did God just ignore it?

Did God think I'm gonna look the other way? Well,

the character of God, God is holy, God is just.

God cannot ignore sin. So what does the Lord say?

It says verse nine, the Lord became angry with Solomon

because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the

God of Israel, who'd appeared to him twice. There is

a saying that says you shouldn't yank on Superman's cape.

Solomon kicked God off, and as a result, God decided,

I'm gonna rip this kingdom that he is pursued at

the expense of everyone else to accumulate I'm gonna rip

it away from him. But nevertheless, verse twelve, for the

sake of David, your father, I'll not do it in

your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand

of your son. The righteous man leads a blameless life.

Blessed are his children after him? Why was Solomon blessed

because of David? But eventually Solomon's not around anymore. What

happens next? Verse fourteen, Lord raised up against Solomon, and

adversary hadad Verse twenty three. God raised up against Solomon.

Another adversary reison verse twenty six. Also, this one's the

big one. Jeroboam, son of Nabat, rebelled against the king.

He was one of Solomon's officials. Here's how all of

this ends. I started you with Abraham. I went through

one thousand years of history that builds to this critical moment. Solomon,

serve me. Everything that's led up to this moment can

be thwarted at this moment. Solomon serve me. But Solomon

was addicted to his success. He was addicted to pleasure.

Jeroboam was a servant of Solomon's and he kind of

rose to the top of leaderships, oh much so that

Solomon put him in charge of the tribe of Joseph.

So remember Jacob has twelve sons. Of those twelve sons,

Joseph is one of them, the youngest of the twelve

sons that eventually become the twelve tribes of Israel. The

tribe of the Levites is the priestly tribe. They are

not given any land, so all of the land inheritance

was given to the other eleven tribes. And now Jereboam

is in charge of the tribe of Joseph, and he

has turned against Solomon this whole time. Like God does

for you and I, he tries to bring people into

our life that will talk sense into us. He brings

people into our life to speak the truth. So the

prophet a high Jah speaks to Solomon Jerobomb, and he

does it through this really unique illustration. He takes the

cloak off of his back and he tears it into

twelve pieces, and he gives one of the pieces to

These names are confusing. Follow Along gives one of the

pieces to Riabom, who is Solomon's son who is supposed

to be king, gives one to him, and then gives

ten to Jerobomb and he says, because of your sin, Solomon,

God is stripping the kingdom away from you. He's splitting

it in half. Because of David. Your son is still

going to get one tribe, but the other ten are

going to someone who's not even in your family. So

how does Solomon respond to this? He should repent. Instead,

he thinks, well, I'll just kill Jerobom. Jerobom finds out

about this, and he goes and hides out in Egypt,

twiddling his thumbs, waiting for Solomon to die. Remember, your

righteous living guarantees a blessing to your children, but your

immoral living leaves their future to chance. We don't want

to accept this. But what you and I do in moderation,

the next generation will do in excess. Peebee. Yeah, I

smoke a little bit of weed, and I do it

because I have anxiety. Yeah that helps, man, I do.

I have a really rough day, and to deal with

all the stress and things, I just smoke a little

bit of weed. Someday, when your kids are really struggling

with addiction, remember what you do in moderation, your children

will do in excess. Eventually, Solomon dies Chapter eleven, verse

forty three Riaboma's son succeeds him as king. Ria Bohm

went to Schechem for all Israel had gone there to

make him king. This is when this gets interesting. Remember,

a righteous man leads a blameless life. Blessed are his

children after him. So Ria Boham is now king. Jerobom

finds out Solomon has died, so he come back from

Egypt to Israel and he rallies all the people around

himself and they have a meeting with the new king,

Rea Bomb. I know, Rea Bomb Jerobomb confusing, but they're

two different people. So Jeobom like a union leader. This

is the way that I would describe it. He's like

a union leader. He's fighting for rights for the workers.

He's saying, every two hours, we should get a fifteen

minute break, we should get an hour lunch, we should

get medical benefits, think about our retirement, you know, things

like that. So he is meeting with the king about

the people, and it says this verse four, your father

put a heavy yoke on us. Now lighten the harsh

labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and

if you do, we'll serve you. So Ria Bohm says, hmm,

let me think about this. Give me three days to

consult with my people. Come back. Meet me after three days,

and I'll tell you what my decision is. So Ria

Boum meets with two different groups of people. First, he

meets with the elders in his like in his tribe,

the wise people, the people that have some life experience,

the people that he probably should listen to. So he

meets with them first, and they say this. They give

him some great advice. They say verse seven. If today

you will be a servant to these people and serve

them and give them a favorable answer, they'll always be

your servant. The wisdom of elders, you should listen to

the elderly people in your life. Listen to the people

with some life experience in your life. Unfortunately, Riobam rejected

the advice of the elders, and guess who we went

to next. I've been I've been doing this job for

twenty some odd years. I've seen this one over and

over again. Can I be blunt? Sometimes the worst people

to get advice from are your buddies. You know why,

because your buddies want to be your buddy. They don't

want to tell you your marriage stinks. They don't want

to look at you and say you're being a terrible parent.

Maybe you should discipline your children. They don't want to

look at you and confront you because they want to

be your buddy. So they tell you what you want

to hear. Don't be mad at me. You're all looking

at me like, how dare you? I'm just literally paraphrasing

the story. Don't blame me, blame Jeremiaho wrote First Kings.

So he goes to his buddies. It's actually described as

the young man he grew up with. By the way, Mike,

drop right there. Hang out with the young men you

grew up with. But seriously, don't get a life advice

from them. They say. These people have said to you,

your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make

our yoke lighter. Now you tell them, my little finger

is thicker than my father's waist. My father laid on

you a heavy yoke. I'll make it even heavier. Father

scourged you with whips, I'll scourge you with scorpions. Your

friends are idiots. Well, Ria Bohem heard what he wanted

to hear, so he went back to the people. The

Bible says he answered the people harshly, Well, how do

you think that went careful? Listening to just your friends,

because they'll usually tell you what you want to hear.

I always think you need me in your life. You

need Morgan in your life, You need Die in your life.

You need the pastors in your life. You need Sean.

Who else is sitting over there? I see Claire's hiding

back there, Johnny, you need these people in your life

because God has called us to not be your friend,

to be your shepherd. Anyone can be your friend, like

any person you meet anywhere can be your friend. But

you need a pastor who's willing to tell you the

truth that if you keep doing this, this is going

to destroy your marriage, if you keep living this way,

this is going to destroy your business, This is going

to destroy your family, This is going to destroy your health.

If you make these decisions, these are bad. You will

always find people that will tell you what you want

to hear, But sometimes those are the people that you

need to ignore. You need to find the people that

love you but have a very unbiased opinion about what

you choose to do with the information they give. Well,

what happened next? Ria Bohm becomes King of one tribe

of his Jerobom, Solomon's servant, becomes king of ten tribes

in Israel. I want to show you the picture of

the way Israel looks. Now there it is. I show

you this for one reason. Many of you you sign

up and you do the read the Bible in the

year thing. Then you get to Leviticus and you kind

of wean off. Then you go to church a few times,

feel guilty and think, well, I don't want to catch up.

I'm just going to jump back in. And then when

you jump back in, there's like Judah and Israel and

the northern and southern and all these different kings, and

it's all totally confusing, and you don't have a clue

what's going on. As a result of Solomon's idolatry, God

split Israel in half. Northern Kingdom of Israel, the king

is Jerobom, Southern Kingdom of Judah, the king is Ria.

Bomb got it. Jesus said, a kingdom divided against itself

will not stand. Can I read that verse from a

few other translations? Did you know that July fourth, it's

the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of America. We're two

hundred and fifty years old in July fourth Americans, which

I'm a proud American, But we are so narcissistic sometimes

to think that we are the culmination of all of history.

We've been around for two hundred and fifty years. We're

blip on the radar. I just described a thousand years

of history in God's chosen nation that he got so

frustrated with he divided it in half. Did you know

that the state of Washington, we have barely been a

state for one hundred and thirty years. Keep that in perspective.

A kingdom divided against itself will not stand. Other translations,

this is what they say. If a kingdom is divided

against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. A nation whose people

fight each other won't last very long. If a country

divides itself into groups which fight each other, that country

will fall apart. For if civil war breaks out in

a kingdom, nothing can make that kingdom last. If a

kingdom divided against itself, it will not stand. Could have,

would have? Should have? I wonder if Solomon could hop

into a time traveling DeLorean, if he'd have made some

different decisions. I wonder if he saw the end result

of what was going to happen to his son when

God said, don't give in to idle worship, and the

opportunity came for him to be addicted to success. I

wonder if he could do it all over again, if

he'd say, nope, best for me in my house, we

are going to serve the Lord. I wonder if he

could go back in time and get to that moment

where he completely gave himself over to pleasure, if he

could do it all over for again, if he'd say,

not today has for me in my house, we will

serve the Lord. H I don't know what to say.

This is It is the end of Solomon, a guy

who had it all and gave into his flesh. I

wish there was a happy ending. Here's the reality. Some

of you you're here. I have them all the time.

I have a lot of that could have, would have,

should us. I have lots of moments where I think,

if I could go back and do that one again,

I'd do that differently. I have lots of them. The

reality is we can't change are past, but you can

change your future. Craziest thing about this history that I

walked you through is the pinnacle of Israel's history was

under the leadership of David. By the way, David was

far from perfect. David did some of the most vile,

horrible things in the world, but we know him as

Israel's greatest king. We know him as a man after

God's own heart. God loved him so much that he

blessed Solomon in spite of himself because of David. So

what did David do different than Solomon? One thing. When

confronted with the sin in his life, David repented it.

That's the only difference. When David was confronted with the

reality of his sin, he repented, and as a result,

he is known as a man after God's own heart.

That should tell you a couple of things. It should

tell you that God knows you cannot be perfect. It

should also tell you that when you come to a

church service and you feel like Pep's he'pen shame on me.

Maybe it's not me, Maybe the enemy is lying to you.

Maybe that is your moment to say, wow, I gotta

get my head screwed on straight. If I repent, God

will restore me that I may serve him. You cannot

change your past, but you can change your future, and

it just begins with making a decision today. As for

me and my house, we will serve the Lord make

that decision today. I want to ask everybody to buy

your heads, close your eyes. I just have one quick question.

If you're here, and that was for you, and you

want to say, Brandon, man, I have got to live

the right way, sometimes not for me, but at least

for my children. If that's you, raise your hand right now,

raise us it up. But everyone do me a favor.

I want you to stand up on your feet. I'm

gonna I wanna pray for all of you. There is

a psalm that David wrote. Here's what David said. He said,

search my heart, Oh God, test and know my anxious thoughts,

and see if there's any wickedness in me, and if

there is, lead me in the way of everlasting. So

this is the David like, the one that's after God's

own heart. And David said, let me paraphrase it. He said, Lord,

I don't know if I did anything today that would

interfere with my relationship with you. But Lord, if there

is something that I have done that maybe I didn't

even realize I did it. Maybe my motives were wrong.

Maybe I thought something I shouldn't thought. If there is

anything that would hinder my relationship with you, please forgive me.

I want to be led in the way of everlasting.

That is the way we live our Christian life. We

are just like Lord. I am an imperfect person. Forgive

me of all my sins. That's what I want to

pray right now. Lord, Jesus, search our heart. O God, testin,

know our thoughts. See if there's any wickedness in any

one of us. And if there is, Lord, forgive us.

Your word promises that if we repent, you'll restore us

that we may serve You. And Lord, we don't want

history to repeat itself in our family with the life

of Solomon. Lord, we want to learn from the reality

of Solomon's life. And God, I thank you that your

word shows us the good and it shows us the ugly,

and we get to learn from both. God. I thank

you for this amazing church and everyone that's here. Lord,

I pray that this word that I preached this morning

would be sealed on their heart in Jesus' name. Amen.
