Well that was awesome, man. I love that.
-
Hey, welcome everybody here, everybody joining us online. Welcome to
-
Venture Church. If I haven't met you yet, my name
-
is Morgan Blessed Be one of the pastors here. Excited
-
to continue our series titled Stressed. Hopefully by the end
-
of this you feel peace. I don't know if that's
-
going to happen or not, but I pray it does.
-
I'm excited to hop into this and I just want
-
to say one quick thing. I know Christian just came
-
and presented about Light Bearers project. I just hope that
-
you hear the communication and the heart behind what we're doing.
-
We want to raise up the next generation here at
-
Venture Church, and we believe that this investment is not
-
just about making things pretty. It's about putting kids in
-
the environment where they can grow in the relation with
-
who Jesus is and step into the full calling that
-
God has for their life. Amen, and the opportunity to
-
be a part of that has been so fun for me.
-
I'm excited to continue it and see how it all
-
progresses this summer, and excited to do it together as
-
a church as we dive in. Let me just start
-
with this quick question here. How many of you have
-
ever said something along the lines or something similar to
-
I'm just a little stressed. Anybody show hands just you know,
-
I'm just a little stressed. I just think that's such
-
a funny phrase, I'm just a little stressed. Imagine if
-
you look to your left or right in the middle
-
of service and you saw somebody a little bit on fire.
-
I guarantee you would not just be like, huh.
-
No, we'd freak out right just a little stressed.
-
Or this one, this is the one that I recognized, like,
-
this is this is probably my go to statement when
-
somebody comes up to me. You've probably come up to
-
me and said, Morgan, how you doing?
-
How about this one?
-
Have you ever just said like, I'm good, just busy. Right,
-
I'm good, I'm just busy. Can I tell you what
-
this is? This is Christian code for my life is
-
utter chaos, and I'm trusting in God kind of.
-
Like I'm doing my best.
-
These are all pretty relatable phrases or things that we
-
might find ourselves saying just to the normal rhythms of life. Right,
-
I'm just a little stressed, I'm good, I'm just busy.
-
But as I thought, about it.
-
Here's what these kind of phrases actually reveal to us
-
when we look at them. Honestly, you know what they reveal.
-
It reveals the truth that we have learned how to
-
normalize stress in our life instead of just dealing with it,
-
instead of actually seeing it for what it is and
-
having something that we do to deal with the stress
-
that we experience. I don't know about you, but oftentimes
-
we'll all joke about the stress that I have. I'll
-
make funny jokes to just like get through it right.
-
Sometimes we'll mask the stress in our life. Other times,
-
maybe you're the kind of person in here where it's
-
just like, hey, when stress is there, I'm just going
-
to plow through it, or I'm just gonna push my
-
way through it. But here is the reality, and here's
-
the truth, friends, is that you could do any of
-
those things. You can joke about it, you can mask it,
-
you can push your way through it. But the reality
-
is is that through all of that, you still feel it.
-
You're still experiencing stress in your life, you still feel
-
the weight of stress in your life. And all I
-
just want to say this clearly before we go any
-
further this morning, you can love Jesus deeply. You can
-
be a Bible believing Christian. You can pray every day
-
of your life. You can come in here and lift
-
your hands in worship. You can live a life deeply
-
in love with Jesus, and you can still feel deeply
-
stressed in life. Those two things are not separate from
-
each other. And I think this is important to just
-
say out loud to get us going this morning, because
-
I think that there's this unspoken stigma that if life
-
ever stresses you out, then you are weak, that you
-
are not a good Christian, or your faith isn't strong enough.
-
And to that, hear me say, that's garbage. That is
-
just not true at all. You can love Jesus deeply
-
and still feel deeply stressed in life. Let's define stress
-
so that we all know kind of where I'm coming
-
from this morning, so we're all talking about the same thing.
-
Stress is the pressure created when what is demanded of
-
you and I feels greater than what you and I
-
can carry. It's the thing that is demanded of us
-
that feels more than what we can carry. So let
-
me just help you breathe for a second in this room.
-
Maybe you walked in this morning, and you walked in with.
-
Some stress in your life.
-
Maybe you walked in and you feel just this weight
-
and this pressure over your life. Can I just tell
-
you this morning? Hear me say this morning. Stress is
-
not sin, Stress is not weakness. Stress is not an
-
indicator of failure in your life.
-
Do you know what stress is? It is a human
-
response to the pressures.
-
That we face in life. Are you with me this morning? Now,
-
Over the next few weeks, we're gonna talk more. We're
-
gonna talk more about worry, We're gonna talk about anxiety.
-
But today we're just talking about stress. Because stress is
-
what is happening to you. It is the result of
-
external pressures building up in your life that you are
-
now faced with dealing with. And here is the big
-
tension when it comes to stress. Do you know what
-
the tension is? Stress is normal. Stress is impossible to escape.
-
It is going to show up in your life. If
-
not now later, If you haven't experienced stress yet, you
-
are a walking miracle and the most unrelatable person I've
-
ever met in my life. You are going to find
-
yourself in situations when the pressure of responsibility, the pressure
-
of deadlines, the pressure of tension, the pressure of family dynamics,
-
the pressure of finances is something.
-
That you are forced to navigate.
-
Stress is going to show up in your life, friends,
-
but hear me say, it is never meant to rule
-
your life. It's going to show up, but it was
-
never meant to rule your life. Now, you may be
-
here this morning and you're like, Morgan, I just I
-
don't get stressed. I just don't really usually deal with stress.
-
It's not something that I ever really feel like is
-
a problem for me. And to be really honest, up
-
until about a month ago, I probably would have put
-
myself in the same category as you. And it's just
-
a funny thing that whenever you get a sign to
-
preach a sermon, God just reminds you you're not immune
-
to anything. But I honestly probably would have said, like,
-
stress is just not something that really affects me that much.
-
I don't really feel like I get stressed out.
-
And here's the truth that I just want to say
-
to you.
-
If this is you, just because you don't get stressed
-
often doesn't mean that you are immune to stress. It
-
was just about a month ago, actually, I think a
-
month ago today. I had a moment where I was
-
reminded of this truth in a very real way. Our
-
family the last couple months has been really busy. You know,
-
we have kids, so say no more, but we also
-
have like a life outside of that, you know, and
-
we've had a lot of things going on.
-
You know, for us.
-
As East Easter approaches, life just gets a little more hectic.
-
It's like a little more busy. There's more things on
-
the calendar.
-
One of my roles here at the church is when
-
we get ready for Easter, I'm in charge of the
-
pass Over dinner. How many of you were at the
-
pass Over dinner with us? That was awesome, That was
-
so fun. I hope you join us next year for that.
-
So I'm in charge to that, and that's that's always fun.
-
But it's a lot. While that's kind of.
-
Going on, we also have this like big looming kids
-
remodel project, and and Christian mentioned it. I'm like, you know,
-
it'll be like the middle of the weekend and I'm
-
like looking on Facebook marketplace for supplies to go randomly
-
leave my family and grab, you know.
-
So that we can use it.
-
You know, there's just all these things that are kind
-
of building up, you know. I'm speaking one week and
-
you know, just.
-
Part of my reality, our reality.
-
As pastors is honestly like when there's stuff going on
-
in your life and I'm connected to you, when when
-
they're you're going through hard times. Oftentimes we're not supposed to.
-
We're trying to.
-
We're supposed to try to figure out ways to better
-
handle it. But sometimes those things just kind of pile up.
-
And there was a lot of people that I love
-
that were walking through some difficult things, friends of mine
-
that we're walking through difficult things. I think in addition
-
to that, there's probably some health things that were on
-
the back of my mind that weren't on the forefront
-
until about a month ago on Sunday when they came
-
to the four Front. I was here on a Sunday morning.
-
I was hosting service. If you were with us in
-
third service, I was here hosting and literally when I
-
walked up to host in the middle of hosting, I felt.
-
This tightness in my chest. I had felt small.
-
Feelings of tightness in my chest before in the past year,
-
but nothing as strong as what I was experiencing during
-
third Service that Sunday morning, and I could feel it
-
like jumbling my thoughts and I was getting distracted. I
-
made it through hosting, and as the lights went down
-
and the buckets were passed, I walked over here and
-
I started to feel dizzy. Thankfully I didn't fall off
-
the stairs, because that would have really been a shocker.
-
But I get off the stairs and I look to
-
Die sitting in the front row, and I said, hey, Die,
-
I think I need to step out. Something's not right.
-
And she know, She's like, what's going on? It was
-
like something my chest. I don't know what's happening, but
-
something's going on with my chest. And thankfully Die went
-
in to straight up mom mode, you know, like the
-
most calm you know.
-
Like Okay, let's walk this way, you know.
-
And we walk out this door over here, and I
-
go into the production room and I sit down and
-
I'm just trying to like kind of like calm down.
-
I didn't know what was really going on. Within literally seconds,
-
it felt like seconds. We had and we have an
-
incredible team of people that respond to emergencies here at
-
our church.
-
They're here every single Sunday. They come into the room.
-
Mike McConnell runs into the room, Kevin Baker runs into
-
the room, Mike is checking my blood. He's you know,
-
checking my I don't know what he was doing. He
-
was doing all sorts of things. He was asking me questions,
-
and so many things were happening. Within just what seemed
-
like a couple seconds longer, the medical unit arrived and
-
they come in and you know, they're lifting my shirt up,
-
and all I'm thinking is, oh my gosh, Di's standing here.
-
They're like, oh my god, this is so awkward. It's like, die,
-
can you wave? It's like having your mom in the
-
dressing room. You know, it's like this, and uh, they're
-
putting these stickers all over me, and you know, they're
-
asking me more questions and see.
-
I can joke about my stress. Uh. And they're asking
-
me all these questions.
-
They're they're they're doing the e KG thing, they're they're,
-
you know, they're doing all these tests. And and they
-
arrive at the conclusion that I'm not in like life
-
threatening danger in that moment, pray Scott. But they say
-
you need to go to the hospital. We can take
-
you there by ambulance. And I was like, no, we're
-
not doing that. Uh uh. And so Nicole and I
-
leave in the middle of service and we drive to
-
over Lake and uh we're there for like six hours
-
and uh they're doing all these tests, more stickers, uh.
-
You know more. I literally we got home that night
-
and I'm like, I have a sticker on my leg.
-
You know, it's like, what is that there?
-
All these things all me ransom test, X ray. I
-
have to go in for a stress test in a
-
couple of weeks. All that to say, everything so far
-
has come back good.
-
Praise God. Very thankful for all of your prayers.
-
If you didn't know that, it's not like what I
-
was trying to hide anything from you, but many of
-
you knew, and I was getting.
-
Texts and messages and prayers and just thankful for all
-
of you.
-
But the doctor said something as we're in the room,
-
and they just said, Morgan, you know you need to
-
start taking better care of yourself. You know there's things
-
that you need to start doing to help you manage
-
your life and to be healthy.
-
And it was a shock to me.
-
You know, it was one of those moments where you're
-
just like, how did I get here?
-
How did this happen?
-
And people have since, you know, come up to me
-
in the conversations. Have you felt more stressed right now,
-
like have you been feeling more stressed? And honestly like no,
-
like not any more than I normally feel, or that
-
would be normal to me in my life. But I
-
have resonated on that for the last month now, and
-
I've had to face the reality that I may just
-
be doing the same thing that I started us off
-
talking about at the beginning of this message, normalizing the
-
realities of stress in my life instead of actually figuring
-
out ways to deal with the stress of my life.
-
And I'll be really honest, there was a moment where
-
we're driving in the car and I was like kind
-
of scared, you know, like reality hits you really quick,
-
and you're like, dude, this is not going to be
-
my life. This is not what my life is going
-
to be like. And you start asking yourself some really
-
weird questions in that moment. And in that moment, as
-
I was feeling what I was feeling, and the medics
-
were hooking me up to stickers and cords all over
-
my chest and I'm embarrassed because Die is in the
-
room and all those things, what hit me was that
-
I was not in control. I had lost control. And
-
here's what I learned in that moment about stress is
-
that stress never asks for permission.
-
It just shows up.
-
And here's what God has been reminding me in the
-
last month, through all the stuff that has been going
-
on in my life. It's that there are times that
-
I cannot control what is happening. But the thing that
-
God has been reminding me is that I.
-
Can choose where I put the weight.
-
I can't always control what's happening in my life, but
-
God has been subtly reminding me I can choose where
-
I put the weight. Stress is going to show up friends,
-
It's going to happen oftentimes uninvited, but it doesn't get
-
to take me over. And this is where scripture speaks
-
so clearly to us. It actually provides us instruction in
-
the Word of God. Psalm fifty five twenty two says,
-
cast your burdens to the Lord, and he.
-
Will will sustain you. He will never.
-
Permit the righteous to be moved. That word burden is
-
really interesting in Hebrew. It literally means what's been given
-
to you, your portion, your assignment. And when I read this,
-
it totally just spoke to me differently. It all of
-
a sudden hit me the reality is some of the things,
-
most of the things that stress us out in life,
-
they're not random, they're actually some of the best things
-
that you love about life. Like oftentimes the thing that
-
stress you out are the blessings that God has put
-
in your life intentionally, right Like, there are times that
-
the thing that stresses you out is your job. The
-
thing that stresses you out is your family. The thing
-
that stresses you out is your calling or your responsibilities.
-
They are what has been given to you. They are
-
your portion, they are your assignment in this season. And
-
here is the tension that I don't think we always
-
understand or grasp about stress, is that God has put
-
these stressful things in our life. But you know what,
-
He has never once asked for you to carry it alone.
-
He's put them all there.
-
In fact, in a different lens, we would call those
-
burdens blessings. And oftentimes the burdens we feel like we've
-
just got to carry it.
-
But God has never once asked us to carry it
-
on our own.
-
In fact, Jesus himself would come and address us carrying
-
weights and pressure like this in Matthew chapter eleven.
-
He he would say, come to me, all who are
-
labored all who are.
-
Heavy laden, feeling the pressure of life, and I will
-
give you rest.
-
You know what I love about Jesus is he doesn't.
-
Deny that you and I are carrying things that are
-
heavy in our life. He doesn't try to justify the
-
weight that you're carrying. Wouldn't it be a bummer if
-
you went to Jesus and we're like, God, there is
-
some heavy thing is going on in my life.
-
Man.
-
My family is struggling, My financers are in a bad spot.
-
Man, I am so stressed out. I don't even know
-
what to do. And Jesus looks at.
-
You, like, figure it out, buddy. Thankfully, that's not the
-
God we serve. He doesn't look at us and try
-
to justify the weight that we're caring. What he does
-
actually is he invites you and I to bring it
-
to him so that you and I don't have to
-
carry it alone.
-
And let's just be real. I think that if we
-
were honest.
-
The truth is is that we just aren't good at
-
doing what Scripture so clearly tells us to do. Most
-
of us, we don't cast our burdens, we collect them.
-
We like bring him with us. Some of you, your
-
burdens are like show and tell. We carry them in
-
our mind, we carry them in our body, We carry
-
them in bed at three am when we wake up
-
and we have to list all of our burdens on
-
the notes page of our iPhone.
-
You know what I'm talking about.
-
We carry them into every conversation, We carry them to work,
-
and then we leave work and we carry them into
-
our home. But the Bible doesn't say listen to me, friends.
-
The Bible doesn't say manage your burdens. The Bible doesn't say,
-
figure out how to manage the burdens that you have
-
in life. Do you know what it says. It says
-
cast your burdens. Do you know what that word cast means?
-
It means to throw it, to hurl it. Not like
-
throw up, that'd be disgusting, but like I imagine like
-
you're trying to lift this heavy object, and you know,
-
when you're like putting all of your effort into lifting
-
something and you're.
-
Just like stop, just ah.
-
You know, it's like it requires all of your body
-
to make it happen. It, Just hurl it, release the
-
things that are burdening you can. I tell you what
-
this is, friends, This is not gentle Christianity.
-
This is not weak prayers. This isn't God.
-
Could you just like maybe just like kind of help
-
me with some stuff that's going on in my life.
-
No, this is God.
-
I am not holding this anymore. Your word instructs me
-
to cast the burdens of my life to you, because
-
you are my sustainer.
-
I trust you, I believe in you. I believe that.
-
Your ways are better than my ways. I believe that
-
you can carry more than I can carry. Friends, that's
-
not weak prayer, that's powerful prayer. Scripturally literally says to
-
throw the burden, to hurl it. And what I love
-
about the scripture is that it is instruction for us
-
that God intends.
-
For us to follow.
-
Those who are weary and burdened. Come to me, cast
-
your burdens. And then there's a promise that follows. Did
-
you catch the promise? The promise is he will sustain you.
-
That word sustain it means to hold you up, It
-
means to support you. It means to keep you from
-
collapsing under the weight. I say this all the time,
-
but sometimes we need to also look at what scripture
-
doesn't say.
-
Do you know what it doesn't say? In scripture. It
-
doesn't say God removes every stressful situation.
-
Sorry, that'd be awesome, though, wouldn't it be like God
-
remove stress bring It's like, oh, that's amazing. I feel
-
like God would be like, no, no, no, that's heaven and
-
you're not quite there yet. No no, he says, I
-
will sustain you. In other words, the pressure might still
-
be there, but you won't break under it. I was
-
thinking about it like a bridge. Anyone ever just drive
-
down I five and you're sitting on the ship Canal
-
bridge on I five in the middle of rush hour traffic,
-
and there is like thousands of cars just like not
-
moving on one side, thousands of cars not moving on
-
the other side, and then good news, there's thousands of
-
cars underneath you that you can't see. But they're also
-
just sitting there. And I don't know about you, but
-
sometimes I'll just sit there and.
-
Think this shouldn't work right, Like.
-
This concrete is suspended like two hundred feet above the water,
-
and there's way too many cars sitting on this bridge.
-
I get stressed out just thinking about it. I gotta
-
cast that to God. But but honestly, God's promise kind
-
of reminds me of this illustration. Thousands of cars are
-
driving over this bridge every single day, unrelenting pressure pressing
-
down on this thing. And honestly, if it was just
-
a slab of concrete two hundred feet above the air,
-
it wouldn't hold. But it's what is underneath it that
-
holds it. Friends, hear me say, this is not just
-
what God does in your life. This is who God
-
is for your life. He's not saying I'm removing all
-
the weight. He's not removing all the pressure. Jesus himself says,
-
in this world you will face trouble. Friends, there is
-
going to be times where there will be pressure. We
-
will be stressed. But Jesus himself says, he's not removing
-
the weight, but he's strengthening us underneath. It goes on,
-
and the scripture says that we will cast our burdens
-
to the Lord, and he will sustain us. He will
-
never permit the righteous to be moved.
-
Do you know what that means?
-
That means that when everything else around you feels like
-
it's shifting, you will not be moved. That when we
-
cast our burdens to him, you and I will not
-
be moved. We will not slip up. We will not collapse.
-
We will not fall apart. You see, when you and
-
I cast our burdens on the Lord, just because life
-
feels unstable doesn't mean that you have to live unstable.
-
It reminds me of Psalm forty six.
-
God is our refuge and our strength, a very present
-
help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the
-
earth gives way. Friends, There's gonna be times in life
-
where life doesn't feel stable, But because He is our sustainer,
-
it doesn't have to make you live unstable. He is
-
our sustainer. You will not be moved. And I just
-
want somebody to hear this this morning. I don't know
-
who you are, but I come across a lot of
-
people who feel that they have to manage all the
-
weights of their world, and I just want you to
-
hear me say. If your life is built on your capacity,
-
your ability to manage life, your ability to manage the
-
pressures of life, you may fool yourself just long enough
-
to think that you can do it all on your own.
-
But the person who is faithful to cast their burdens
-
on the Lord every single day is a person who
-
understands that this life was never designed.
-
To be built on your capacity.
-
Friends, hear me say, your life was designed to be
-
built on Jesus.
-
He is your sustainer.
-
Those who understand and are consistent and faithful and regular
-
on taking the pressures of the life and casting those
-
things to the Lord. That is a life that is unshakable.
-
That is a life that will not be moved. It
-
will not fall, it will not collapse because it isn't
-
just based on what you can hold. It is sustained
-
by the power of God, who is your faithful sustainer
-
in life. So the question then that we should probably
-
be asking is how do I actually practically cast my burdens?
-
How do I cast my stress on the Lord? What
-
does that even look like? Can I tell you what
-
it starts with? It has to start with prayer. This
-
is not a metaphorical teaching that Jesus is giving us.
-
This is a practical lesson for us to live out
-
in our life, and it starts with a life of prayer.
-
This is where people get stuck. And I want to
-
encourage you to add a couple really important elements to
-
your prayer life that honestly we should be implementing into
-
our prayer life daily, maybe.
-
Hourly in our life, and this is where it starts.
-
It starts with us.
-
The first thing that you've got to add to your
-
prayer life to help you cast your stress, to cast
-
your burdens, is that you have got to be able
-
to what it is.
-
You've got to put a name to your burden.
-
You've got to get specific. You've got to be able
-
to say in your prayer life to God. God, you
-
understand my financial situation is not where it needs to be. God,
-
you understand that I need this much money or else
-
we are going to lose this. Right, God, I need
-
your help in this relationship. God, I don't know how
-
to manage this dynamic.
-
God.
-
I need you in my workplace because this job is
-
getting overwhelming to me. I'm stressed out with my job.
-
I'm stressed out with my boss. I think it is
-
so important that we name it. And here is why.
-
Because you can't release what you won't acknowledge in your life.
-
It's impossible for you to release something that you are
-
not aware of what is causing you a burden. You
-
can't just say, God, I'm stressed, Well, what is it
-
exactly that you're releasing you can't release what you won't acknowledge.
-
We've got to put a name to our burden. And
-
the second thing is this, and this is probably the
-
harder part, is that you and I have to practice
-
and learn how to release control of our burdens. You know,
-
casting is not informing God. You know what it actually is.
-
It's transferring responsibility. It's saying God, I cannot handle this
-
on my own. I don't know what it is that
-
I'm even supposed to do with this, God, but I
-
trust that you can sustain me through this. It is
-
a transferring of responsibility in our life. And this is
-
where it gets real, because if you are still trying
-
to control the things that are burdening you, stressing you out,
-
then you haven't actually cast it unto God. And the
-
truth is is that I don't think anyone really has
-
a problem with the promise that precedes cast your burdens
-
to the Lord. Everybody, for the most part, likes the
-
idea of God sustaining us.
-
Amen. I think the problem.
-
Is is practically we sometimes trust ourselves more than we
-
trust God with our burdens.
-
In our minds.
-
Releasing control of the things that we are stressed out
-
about is actually more stressful than actually releasing it to
-
God because we're not in control anymore. And I just
-
want you to hear me say, you will never feel
-
more peace in your life than when you learn how
-
to release control of the burdens.
-
Of your life.
-
You will never feel more in control when the control
-
is not in your hands but in God's hands. I
-
think there's some indicators that we can look for in
-
our life to say, if we practically, realistically, if we
-
really have cast our burdens onto God, and if you're
-
taking notes, I think these are just good practical things
-
to maybe jot down. Maybe you will catch yourself doing
-
this after you pray prayers and cast these burdens onto God,
-
and these are just indicators that maybe you haven't actually
-
fully released control of these things that you've prayed that
-
God would take in your life. And the first indicator
-
is this. Maybe you are a person who you cast
-
burdens unto God. Maybe you say the prayer and you say, God,
-
I give you this thing in my life. But the
-
problem is you keep replaying it in your mind. You
-
say you've given it to God, but it's still running
-
on repeat in your mind. You're in the shower and
-
you're thinking about it, you're driving down the road and
-
you're thinking about it, you're laying in bed and you're
-
thinking about it. And friends, hear me just say, that's control.
-
It is still controlling you because mentally, you're still trying
-
to solve it, you're still trying to fix it, you're
-
still trying.
-
To predict it. And here's the truth.
-
If I'm still obsessing over it, I'm still holding it.
-
So maybe the indicator that you have to look for
-
is if you keep playing it on repeat in your mind.
-
Maybe the second indicator that you need to look for
-
is maybe you're the kind of person who feels like
-
everything depends on you.
-
This one hits deep.
-
Right because I know that there are probably so many
-
of us in the room that you feel like you
-
have these conversations in your mind, like, man, if I
-
don't figure this out, if I don't make this happen,
-
if I don't hold this all together, Friends, that's control,
-
because what you've done is you've placed yourself in a
-
position that only God is supposed to.
-
Hold in your life.
-
The truth is is that when I carry the weight
-
of it all depends on me, I've actually taken back what.
-
I said I already gave to God. That's control.
-
Another indicator that maybe you haven't actually cast your.
-
Burdens to God.
-
Is maybe you can't rest without feeling guilty. This's a
-
big one for all my high capacity high achievers.
-
In the room.
-
Maybe that stressed you out just hearing it. You try
-
to rest, but here's the truth.
-
Your mind just won't shut off. Even when you stop working,
-
You're still striving. And even that is you holding control still.
-
Because what your soul is actually saying is I don't
-
trust that anything will be okay unless my hands are
-
still on the plow, unless I'm still moving it forward.
-
And here's the truth. If you can't rest, it's often
-
because you haven't released still controlling you. Maybe an indicator
-
that you can relate with is maybe you keep on checking,
-
fixing and managing it. This is so subtle, The way
-
this plays out is so.
-
Subtle in our life.
-
You pray about it, but then you keep checking in
-
on the situation, you keep trying to fix people, you
-
keep managing outcomes.
-
That's control.
-
It's like imagine this, It's like handing something to God
-
and then hovering over God's shoulder.
-
Like you got it.
-
You sure do you want me to step in? You
-
keep checking it, you keep fixing it, you keep managing it.
-
But here is I think probably the clearest sign of
-
us not actually casting our stress, our burdens to God.
-
It's that your peace is still dictated by the outcome.
-
Friends, hear me say, if your.
-
Peace rises or falls based on what happens next, based
-
on what someone's says, based on whether things go the
-
way that you wanted them to or not, you're still
-
holding it because true casting, says God, even if this
-
doesn't go the way that I want, I trust you,
-
I trust you. You see all of these indicators, they
-
reveal the same truth to us. And the truth is
-
that casting your burdens is not just giving it to God.
-
It's actually letting go of your grip on it. It's
-
letting go of your grip on how it turns out.
-
And here is the thing. When you and I find ourselves,
-
because it'll happen, casting our burdens to go, and then
-
suddenly reaching.
-
Down and picking them back up, picking.
-
Up that worry, picking that stress back up, It'll happen.
-
Can I just encourage you today when you find that
-
happening in your life. Don't shame yourself, don't think that
-
you're a failure. Just say, God, here I am again
-
holding this thing that I know I already said is yours,
-
and God, I release it again to you. I cast
-
my burdens on to you, and I trust that you
-
will sustain my life.
-
This is your verse for this week. This is your
-
staying power.
-
Cast your burdens on the Lord and he will sustain
-
you when stress hits, and we pray God, I cast
-
this on you. I trust that you are my sustainer.
-
Hear me say this.
-
Staying power doesn't come from us caring more, doesn't come
-
from us picking up more. Staying power actually comes from
-
caring less because we learn to give it to.
-
Him and not pick it back up.
-
And here's what I want to do to close today.
-
I actually want to say this prayer together. So I
-
want to invite you to bow your heads and close
-
your eyes all over this room. Maybe you came in
-
here this morning with some heavy stuff on your life.
-
You heard that we're doing a stress series and you're like, man,
-
I got to figure out what to do with my stress.
-
There's a weight on your heart.
-
There is a weight on your mind that's been sitting
-
there for a long time. There's that pressure that you feel,
-
and I want to lead you in a prayer that
-
literally you can walk out of this room and say
-
to yourself when you go home, because the pressure and stress,
-
it doesn't leave us, but we learn.
-
How to cast it.
-
And so I want you to just repeat this prayer
-
after me this morning. Would you say, Holy Spirit, help
-
me to release what I've been holding. I bring you
-
the heavy burdens of my life, and I release my
-
need to control it. I release the outcome to you.
-
I trust you with what I can't carry.
-
You are my sustainer. I will not be moved.
-
In Jesus' name, Father God, I pray over our church
-
right now, and God, I pray over all those who
-
are feeling the weight of stress and burdens on their life. God,
-
your scripture teaches us so clearly you never intended us.
-
To walk with that alone.
-
And so Father, I say this morning, God almost as
-
a prayer of declaration and instruction to me and my friends.
-
God, God, I'm speaking to myself this morning. You know that.
-
God, we cast our burdens to you. We don't just
-
give them to you. We release the outcome to you.
-
We release the weight of it to you. And Father,
-
we say together we trust you. You are our sustainer,
-
and we trust you with our life. We trust you
-
with the outcomes that are to come.
-
We pray that you would walk with us and encourage
-
us as we daily walk through the.
-
Stresses of life and are faithful to release those things
-
to you. God, we love you, and we thank you
-
in Jesus name. And everyone said, amen.
