newer staff member and I was asking, I'm gonna go, so.

How have you handled this?

And they said, well, the gray was a little bit surprising,

but we love the weather now. And they said, but

our kids are really confused by how long.

The days last. She said, I'll.

Send our kids to bed at like nine thirty and

they're like, Mommy, it's still light out and it is confusing,

but we love it.

So enjoy it while it's here.

If I've never had the opportunity to meet you, I'm Brandon.

I'm the lead pastor of the church. If you're new

to Venture, I love the opportunity to meet you. I'll

be hanging out in the lobby after the service. Please

come up introduce yourself to me. I'll be easy to

That's very loud and sparkly. In the words of my wife,

I want you.

To grab your bibles.

I want you to turn to Proverbs chapter one. Basically,

since the beginning of the year, we have been looking

at the life of Solomon. We transition a month ago

to some of the writings of Solomon. We looked last

month at the Book of Ecclesiastes, and now we're going

to finish up our look at Solomon by looking at

the Proverbs. Most of the Proverbs were written by Solomon.

You'll find this very interesting Proverbs chapter one, verse one.

How do we know they're written by Solomon? It says

right here, the Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, King

of Israel. For gaining wisdom and instruction, for understanding words

of insight, for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what

is right and just and fair, for giving prudence to

those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young.

Let the wise listen and add to their learning. He's

basically saying, whether you're young or old, you need wisdom.

Then he says, and let the discerning, get guidance for

understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and the riddles of

the wise.

And then Solomon adds in this juggernaut verse.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,

but fools despise wisdom and discipline. I want to ask

everyone to buy your heads, close your eyes. I want

you to repeat this prayer after me. Everyone say, Dear Jesus,

speak to my heart, change my life in Jesus' name.

Amen. I want to give you a.

Little background on the Book of Proverbs. One of the

things that people frequently ask us, It's one of the

things I love about venture is there's so many of

you that have found faith in Jesus at this church,

and you very sincerely come up to staff and many

of our leaders, and you ask the right questions, And

one of them is I just bought a Bible or

I just got a Bible.

How do I read this Bible?

Because the unique thing about the Bible is it's not

like a normal book. It has the beginning and it

has an end, but it really isn't meant to be

read that way.

You don't start at the beginning and read to the end.

Because what the Bible is is it is an anthology

of sixty six different books written by a multitude of authors,

and overall, the Bible tells you the story of the

person of Jesus, and you basically see this arc and

stream that leads to you and I being given the

opportunity to have a relationship with Jesus and seeing that

God is at work in every single aspect of our lives.

So when I give people advice on how to start

reading the Bible, one of the things I always tell

them is get in the habit of reading a proverb

a day. Read the Proverbs every single day. The Proverbs

there's thirty one chapters, like most months have thirty one days,

and so I always say, read the chapter in Proverbs

that coincides with the day of the week. So today

is June seventh, so you would read Proverbs seventh. One

of the things you'll find fascinating about Proverbs is people

quote it, even non religious people, all the time. You

can be at an Oscar speech and someone will say

a wise man once said, and they'll quote a proverb.

Or a politician in a speech will say a person

once said, and they will quote a proverb. Many of

these proverbs are familiar with you. The main theme of

proverbs is Wisdom's used one hundred and twenty five different

times over these thirty one chapters. Now, if you think

about the Bible being sixty six different books written by

all these different authors, you can imagine that they all

used various different writing styles and techniques. The writing technique

for proverbs it falls in.

The category of wisdom literature.

Now, when you and I think about wisdom, we think.

I have a struggle in my life.

I need to get some advice, So I'm going to

go talk to a therapist, a pastor, a mentor, someone

I believe is wise and gives good advice.

We think of that as wisdom.

We also think wisdom is okay, I'm out a crossroads.

I got two different options and I'm not sure which

way to go. So I'm going to talk to somebody

with a little bit more life experience, somebody who believes

in me, and I'm going to get their advice because

they always give me wisdom. And so we think of

wisdom in terms of I'm struggling, or I need to

have plans for the future. To an ancient Jew, wisdom

was much more than good advice or successful planning. There

is a Jewish theologian. His name is Roy Zuck. He

described wisdom this way. He said, wisdom means being skillful

and successful in one's relationships and responsibilities, observing and following

God's principles of order in the universe. Now, I was

talking to somebody this week. We were kind of talking

about what I was going to share on Sunday, and

he brought this up, and by his illustration, you know,

he's my age. He said, Oh, it's kind of like

Bugs Bunny cartoons, because you know, whenever Bugs Bunny is

about to do something that he shouldn't do, a little

angel would pop up on his shoulder and would try

to talk him out of it, and then a little

demon would pop up on his other shoulder, and so

over and over again. In these Bugs Money cartoons, he

doesn't always choose the right thing. Sometimes he listens to

the demon and doesn't listen to the angel, and other

times he listens to the angel and flicks away the demon.

But it is this idea that there is always two

things that are vying for our attention. In the first

nine chapters of Proverbs, Solomon he means this metaphorically, don't

get hung up on it. He refers to two women

that are vying for your attention. He refers to one

as wisdom and the other one as folly or foolishness,

and both are vying for your attention.

Both are trying.

To get you to make a decision one way or another.

If you break it down, it's basically saying you and

I always have an option between God's plan and our

own plans. We have a choice between wisdom and foolishness.

God's plan, our plan, wisdom and folly. And realize that

these voices are constantly shouting at us, trying to give

us advice and trying to share an opinion on.

What we should do.

And part of this life is realizing God is trying

to get through with the voice of wisdom, but oftentimes

all we hear are these outside voices shouting at us,

these foolish voices that are trying to get us led

further and further from the truth. Everyone today has an

opinion about everything, and you don't have to go far

to hear everyone's opinion about everything. People have an opinion

about what you should eat, they have opinion about what

you should drive, how you should raise your kids, what

type of animal you should or shouldn't have.

They have an opinion about where you should.

Live, what you should think, who you should vote for,

how you should spend your money. People have an opinion

about everything, and they shout them loudly at us. It

seems like our friends have an opinion about everything we do.

Celebrities seem to have an opinion about everything we do.

Professional athletes have an opinion. Billionaires seem to have an opinion.

Social media influencers have an opinion.

The problem is, none of.

These people, when push comes to shove, really cares about you.

Yet their opinion shapes and changes our minds.

It's never changed. This is the way life has always been.

Solomon says, there are two women vying for your attention,

Wisdom and Folly, God's way, Man's way over the last

I would say months, I have a podcast called Pastor's

Unfiltered Again.

I encourage you to check it out sometime.

Pastor Tony and I he's our Seattle campus pastor, co

host this podcast. And we had a discussion about our

first two messages on Proverbs this weekend next week, and

I said Tony, tell me things you've heard from people

over the last month, And Tony just starts rattling off

these and we kind of go back and forth. But

these are the things we hear from people today. Man,

the real estate industry, it's really struggling.

Heard that one.

My job in the tech industry is so tenuous. I'm

thinking about switching careers. I can't find a job. I

can't find a job in the Seattle area because the

job market is so soft.

I'm beginning to expand.

My search nationwide, and I'm worried about the state of

the economy.

Gas prices are killing me.

Should I even go on this vacation overseas? There's so

much turmoil around the world. It doesn't seem safe. My

business is struggling. I am afraid to raise my children

in this world. I don't trust political leaders anymore. You've

heard all these statements too. These are just in the

last month. So what do we do? Where do we turn?

Solomon says, there's the way of a wise person and

there's a way of a fool. But he begins all

of this with the juggernaut statement, which is what I

want us to wrestle through today. Because if you want

to understand proverbs, if you want to unlock proverbs, if

you wanna unlock wisdom in your life, it begins in

Proverbs one, verse seven. The fear of the Lord is

the beginning of knowledge. But fools despise wisdom and discipline.

You either choose to make wise decisions, or you choose

to make foolish ones. You either choose to go God's way,

or you choose to go your own way. And in

the margins I always write in these verses. I always

write in my Bible in the margins, and I write

things like whenever it's statements like this, I always write

down God's plan versus my plan, God's plan versus my

plan to remind me that the Bible warns us about

this over and o over again, that there is this

constant pulling one way or the other. And I think

one of the smartest things you could ever do as

a human being is to know you're usually wrong. Like

there are people that I meet with on a regular

basis who say, this was the decision I was presented with,

These were the two three options, and I chose this one,

and ninety nine percent of time they choose the wrong one.

And Solomon says this in Proverbs Proverbs twelve fifteen.

He says, the way of a fool seems right.

To them, but the wise listen to advice. If you

knew how many times the counseling advice that I give

to people is every tree decision you make on your own,

your gut instinct, your natural reflex is wrong. So my

advice to you is, since you're always wrong, the wisest

thing you could do is literally do the opposite of

what you think you should do. For all intents, everything

you think is smart is usually dumb. What you think

is a good decision ends up being a bad one.

You'd actually end up ahead if you just did the

opposite of what you.

Do, because people are convinced they're right, and Solomon says,

the way of a fool seems right to them and

seems like a good decision, seems like a logical decision.

And the crazy part is fast forward. This is twenty

twenty six. We are so embracing of your feelings now,

like we care so much about how you feel, and

so if you feel like this is what you.

Should do, you should do what you feel.

Part of wisdom is stepping back and thinking, sometimes my

feelings are crazy. Sometimes my feelings are not appropriate to

the situation I'm dealing with. And if I am led

by my feelings, I am gonna drive off of a

cliff that was all free. So there's this constant pulling

God's way, my way, the way of a fool, the

way of the wise, God's way, my way, wise foolish.

And then Solomon tells us, well, the fear of the

Lord is the key to unlocking wisdom. Did you know

that he refers to the fear of the Lord eighteen

times throughout these proverbs, you hear fear of the Lord,

and ninety nine percent of us don't really understand what

it means because when we think fear, we think it's

a bad thing. But Solomon is saying, this is the

key to unlocking wisdom is understanding.

The fear of the Lord. But if you're afraid of someone,

that's a negative thing.

So when we hear that, all of these negative emotions

and maybe trauma that we dealt with from someone that

caused us pain and hurt stirs up. And then being

told we are supposed to fear the Lord, that that

is the beginning of wisdom. It stirs up a lot

of angst inside of us. And when you hear the

fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge that

can be confusing. So is Solomon literally saying I am

supposed to be afraid of God? Is Solomon saying I

am supposed to like shake in fear whenever I sense

the presence of God?

Or what does it mean? If you were here.

And you are not a believer, you do not have

a relationship with Jesus. If you are here and you

are far from God, then you probably should be afraid

of God because you should have a fear of judgment,

a fear of death, and a fear of what does

it mean to be eternally separated from God?

But most of you are a follower of Jesus.

Now we're at different points in that journey because a relationship.

A g He says, that's what it is. It's a journey.

You're serving God. You fall, you mess up, you make.

Mistakes, you pick yourself up, you say, Lord, will you

forgive me? And you just kind of keep walking. And

that is a spiritual journey. It's up, it's down, but

it's hopefully when I look at where I'm at today

compared to where I was two years ago.

I'm not where I want to be.

But at least I'm not where I used to be.

And you're on this journey with Jesus. If that is

you and you are a follower of Jesus, the fear

of God is much different. It's not fear like we

think as human beings. It is a reverence for God.

This morning, in our staff gathering, we do devotions as

a team with all of our volunteers, and Die led that.

And she actually referred to this verse. It's Hebrews twelve

twenty eight. This sums up what does fear of the

Lord mean?

What is a right?

That's just healthy understanding of a fear of the Lord?

And it's Hebrews twelve twenty eight. Therefore, since we are

receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be

thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

for our God is a consuming fire.

This reverence and awe.

Are exactly what the fear of God means for a

follower of Jesus. This is the motivating factor for us

to surrender to the creator of the universe. It's not

a fear like you and I have with someone who

has hurt us, or someone who tries to control us,

or someone who has power over us, like fear of

the Lord. Is not like the fear you have for

your boss who could fire you. It's not fear like

you have for a coach who could cut your son

from the baseball team. It's not fear like you have

for someone who has wounded you or hurt you. It's reverential,

respectful fear like a child would have for their parents.

Most of us, many of us are here. We're parents,

and we do our best. We're not perfect parents. But

when our kids are young, children adore their parents. Their

parents are their heroes. They're sad when they're separated from

their parents. Their parents make them feel safe. Their parents

make them feel like allow them to have fun.

But at the same time, they have this.

Deep love, almost hero worship for mom and dad.

They have fear of you.

It's like you better follow the rules, you better behave,

and if you don't, you get in trouble.

Our kids.

We didn't have to ever physically punish our kids, and

it is because we only had to give them an

expression of disappointment.

If my kids thought I was disappointed.

In them, that was the most that caused more tears

than twenty five spankings could ever cause them. And that

is an example of this reverential, respectful fear. They're not

worried about mom or Dad blowing their tops, screaming at them,

getting physically violent, but they have such reverence and awe

of their parents that the sheer thought of.

Mom and Dad being dis pointed in me is crushing.

Now I'm gonna speak for my staff that my staff

isn't afraid of me.

They don't like fear me.

They don't think Brandon's gonna fly off the handle and

start screaming or something like that.

And but.

My staff does not want to disappoint me. They just

said it right there, like So that is reverential, respectful fear.

And if you and I fear the Lord, it is acknowledging.

Not just in our heads we know the right things

to say, we know what we should think. It is

not just in our head, but in our heart. We understand.

God is the creator. I am just his creation. I

mean that in itself puts you in this humble place

before God. He is the father and we're his children.

He is the master and we're his servants. It is

this understanding that respect for who God is. We listen

carefully to what he says. We strive to obey his word,

understanding that disobedience displeases him, like the God is disappointed

when we don't follow his word. It's an understanding that

when you and I sin, it breaks fellowship with Him

and it invites his correction into our life. So don't

think afraid of God, scared of God. Think respect and

reverence towards God.

Are you with me so far?

Until we understand who God is and develop a reverential

fear of him, we'll never have true wisdom, because true

wisdom comes only from understanding who God is, that God

is holy, that God is just, and that God is righteous.

The fear of God is the basis for our walking

in his ways, serving him, even loving him. Believers aren't

scared of God. We have no reason to be scared

of God because we have his promise that absolutely, this

is Romans eight thirty eight, that nothing can separate us

from His love. You don't have any reason to be

afraid of someone who has told you there's nothing that

you can do that will separate your love, my love

from you. I think it helps to be a parent

to really grasp that verse in a very small way,

because as a parent, especially as your kids get older,

they have a life of they have a mind of

their own, and that I always say those little kids

that you're their hero. They eventually become teenagers and you're

no longer their hero. And then they become young adults

who think they're way smarter.

Than they actually are.

And then at around twenty three, twenty four to twenty five,

you fall back into hero spot again. But there's that

like gap of five to six years where mom and

dad are an idiot and when mom and dad are dumb,

kids do things that we don't think are smart. And

this is the thing, no matter what my kids do,

it absolutely does not change the fact that I love

these kids. Like no matter how frustrating my kids were

when they were teenagers, I'm still their dad. Nothing changes that.

That is what it means. There's nothing you can do

that will separate you from his love. If you feel

that way about your kid, imagine how much greater.

God feels that way about you.

Then it also says we also have this other promise

and Hebrews thirteen to five Q worship team that God

will never leave us or forsake us. That like God

is always going to be there, He's always.

Gonna help us.

Like we don't have to worry about waking up one

day and God is left and nowhere to be found.

God will never leave us nor forsake us. So fearing

God means having a reverence for him that greatly impacts

the way that we live our life. Fear of God

is respecting him, obeying him, submitting to his discipline, and

worshiping him in awe. Fear of the Lord is a

deep awareness that God sees everything, that God knows everything,

and that God is everywhere, Like no matter what you do,

you can't hide from him. He hears everything that you say,

he sees everything that you do. He knows everything that

you think. You can't like think I'm gonna get away

from God and do this bad thing here because He's everywhere.

Fear of the Lord involves all of your life.

Fear of the Lord by the way it drives out

your fear of man.

Some of you you care so much about those loud

of voices and opinions of other people that you don't

have time to fear God because you're so afraid of

other people. But when you are, you have a righteous, holy,

reverent fear of God. You don't have fear of other

people because in the end, I want to choose the

way of wisdom, not the way of folly.

Fear the Lord.

Is usually expressed through our obedience.

So how do we know how we obey God?

Well, you study his word, you go to church, you

go to small groups. You got to learn God's word

to know what obedience really is.

Fear the Lord old.

Ultimately, what it does is it leads to a deeper

relationship with the Lord. And finally, the fear of the

Lord is the key to wisdom and understanding. It is

the key to unlocking the book of Proverbs. When you

came in this morning, we handed you communion. I'm hoping

you got it. If you didn't get it, raise your

hand and one of our ushers will very quickly sprint

down the aisle and give it to you. I'm gonna

keep the ushers really busy. Wow, you got's like half

the number of people in the first service, and half

of them.

Didn't get it. So we got you better this service.

When you talk about reverence and respect, I think, out

of everything that we do in the church, there is

nothing more sacred than receiving communion together. This, what you're

holding in your hand, represents everything that.

Jesus did for us.

We're told two things about this, that whenever we receive

communion we should take time to reflect. And then it

also tells us that whenever we receive communion, we should

remember the price that was paid so that you and

I can be right before God. So let's get this

working real quick. Peel off the top. There's the cracker.

Peel off the second layer. There's the juice. Want you

to hold those emblems in your hand. Fear of the

Lord is coming into service at ten am, and when

worship is happening, you put your phone down. You're not

worried about who's here looking around because you're in awe.

This is your moment to worship the Creator, to worship

the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. If

you came into worship and you're worried about I better

check my Instagram. I better look around and see if

my buddy's here. If you're worried about all those other

stuff takes some time to reflect right now, because whenever

you receive communion, it gets an opportunity for you to say, Jesus,

how are you and I doing? And maybe it's been

a rough week. Gives you an opportunity to say, Jesus,

will you forgive me? Before I receive communion today, I

want to make sure that me and you were good.

So I want you to close your eyes. I just

want you to take a moment and just reflect. It's

between you and Jesus, not you and your spouse, not

you and your kids, you and your creator.

How are you and him doing? And if you are

not where you need.

To be, take a moment and just say you're sorry.

I was thinking about this as I wrote this sermon,

and it was leading to communion, and I was thinking

about what a sacred moment it is for me to

serve you communion.

Like this is not this.

Is not something that's insignificant.

Not to pick on our baristas.

But this is not like a barista making you coffee,

or a waiter waitress serving you at a restaurant, or

someone changing the oil on your car. Like this is

a sacred moment that several thousand years ago. Jesus himself said,

I want you to do this. Whenever you gather and

I want you to do this to remember me. This

is the communion. This is that moment where there should

be a sense of awe that we get to do this,

that we get to do this because of what Jesus

has done for us, Because for God so loved the

world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes

in him would not perish but receive eternal life. That

you are those people that he's talking about. The Bible

tells us that on the night that Jesus was betrayed, beforehand,

he got together with his disciples.

They ate dinner.

Then after dinner, he took a piece of bread and

he broke it into pieces, and he passed it around

to each one of them, and he said, this represents

my body that is broken for you. He said, whenever

you receive of it, pause, remember me.

Let's receive of the body together. I want you to

stand up. The cup is the heavy part. I say

this very often.

That it's not what it is that matters, it's what

it represents that matters.

That this represents the shed blood of Jesus.

The Bible says that without the shedding of blood, there

to have been no forgiveness of sin. The Bible also

says that it's by his stripes we are healed, that

by his stripes we are set free, that by his

stripes we are delivered. That it's because of what this

represents that you and I get a stand here knowing

we are right with God. It represents grace, it represents forgiveness,

it represents freedom, and it represents an opportunity, no matter

where you are, to surrender your life to Jesus. I

want you to bow your heads, close your eyes. If

you are here today and you do not know Jesus,

you were that person I was referring to who should

be afraid of God. But you want to say pastor

Brandon Today, I want to begin a relationship with Jesus.

I'm going to count to three, and when I say three,

I want you to raise your hand. But I also

know that there are some of you. You've gone to church,

you've prayed prayers. But if you were completely honest with

this question, are you in a right relationship with Jesus?

You'd have to be honest and say no or I'm

not sure. And if that is you don't leave this

place without knowing you are in a right relationship with Jesus.

So if that is you, when I say three, I

want you to raise your hand.

Here I go.

Just between you and Jesus. One. Two, raise your hand

right now.

Three, raise it up high.

Some of our ushers are gonna run around.

They're actually gonna stick something in your hand, on the

floor in the balconies, people all over. Before we receive

this cup, I want to make sure there our hearts

are in the right place. So those that raised your hands,

those that didn't need to raise their hand, let's pray

this prayer together. So everyone in this place, say, dear Jesus,

I stand before.

You today and I admit I'm a sinner.

I'm in need of grace, I'm in need of mercy.

And today I ask you to forgive me. I invite

you to come into this place to change me.

I choose from.

This day forward to serve you with my life.

Thank you for forgiving me, for saving me. In Jesus' name.

hard to complete our Kingdom Builders light Bearers.

Project light Bears is our efforts.

To complete our kids spaces for the kids of this

kid but also this community, as well as our partnership

with the Dominican Republic where we are completing the install

of solar panels to bring a physical light but also

spiritual light to a place that is pretty hard to visit.

Actually it's a plantation, but I thought it.

Would be so fun to bring two of our very

own to the stage to share with you why this

project matters.

This is Mike and Kayla Anderson. Aren't they cut? Don't

I tell you why.

I'm so proud of them because they are products of

our student ministries here Adventure. So Mike and Kayla both

we're part of our youth ministry. Shout out to the

incredible student ministry here. They also still serve in our

youth ministry which is thank you so much for how

you serve there. They met there, they started dating there,

they got engaged as a part of that ministry.

I mean they had graduated from high school.

Don't worry about.

Uh.

Now they are married, part of our young couple ministry,

but also serving in our youth ministry. And they're gonna

bring a baby not only into their family, but into

the kids ministry here ad Venture Church. So who more

appropriate now you can give them a hand Who more

appropriate to share the importance of what we're doing in

this Light Bearer's project than these two.

I'm I'm very thankful for Kids Ministry. I'm very thankful

for the people who poured into kids ministry. I got

saved in kids ministry. There's future leaders in our classrooms

right now that aren't just future leaders, but are leaders

right now. And some of them are even better leaders

than I am right now. But so I'm just thankful

for them as we bring our son in September. I'm

just super thankful for Kingdom Builders and Pastor Jonathan Kaylawnie

for their vision and the Light Bears project. And I'm

just praying that we can fill our classrooms and fill

our space just with the love of Jesus. And I

just pray that so many of our kids in our

own son can come to know Jesus through that.

Yeah. And I just want to preface like, there's so

many ways that you can give, and for many years

we just gave our time and there's not an hour

spent serving. There's not a dollar that we've poured into

this ministry. There's not anything that has gone to waste,

and it is all important in the sacrifice that we've made.

And so I just want to invite you guys to

join us in that. If you can give financially, great,

if you can give with your time great. If you

can give just through prayer, that is amazing. I just

recall a time when I was fifteen years old helping

in the kids ministry, when we were at Jackson High School,

praying for times like this where we would be able

to taste and see the blessing that I prayed for

a couple of years ago, and to raise a family

here has already been such an amazing blessing. And so

we're just so excited for what God has already done

and what He's gonna do. And so we would love

for you guys to partner with us.
