For those of you that don't know who I am

because I've been gone for three weeks. I'm Brandon. I'm

in charge. Honestly, it's great that you're here. I do

want to say, as all of our teenagers are leaving,

we're gonna miss you.

Guys.

This is the last Sunday that the staff doesn't have

to work because starting next week we go back to

three services. So I know Die already mentioned it, but

I want to mention it again for those of you

that weren't here when Die was up at the very

beginning of the service. We go back to our three

service format starting next week eight thirty ten eleven thirty,

so so please mark that down. I'm sure we'll probably

send you way too many reminders in the days and

weeks to come, but I just want to take a

moment remind you.

But do me.

If everybody by your heads, close your eyes, repeat this

prayer after me, Everyone say, Dear Jesus, speak to my heart,

change my life in Jesus' name.

Amen. I love to tell stories from our past.

Most of the time I tell you stories that are

really encouraging, but we have lots of stories that go

down and infamy also, so I want you to like

allow me to share a story that in the history

of venture has gone down and infamy. Now I have

been serving communion at our church in the same way

for twenty two years. So if you've been here when

we do communion, we will be doing communion next week.

But I try to make it a very deeply meaningful

spiritual experience. I give everyone the opportunity before we receive

of the cup to make a commitment in their faith

every single time I do it. And then I talk

about the cup of juice and I say, it's not

what it is that matters, it's what it represents, and

it represents the shed blood of Jesus. And then I

basically explain that it represents grace. The grace is unmerited favor,

that grace is a gift. You didn't earn it, you

didn't deserve it, but Jesus loved you so much that

he gave it to you. And then we pray the

sinner's prayer, and then at Amen and I say, let's

drink the cup of Grace together. And it symbolizes God's

grace covering all of our sin and all of our shame.

So as people took the cup and they drank. People

begin to gag, people begin.

To spit it out. I like, this is my version

of the story. People begin to vomit. Now when when

I drank it, I like had to pause because I

was like, what in the world is that? And when

we sent our volunteers to go buy grape juice, they

mistaked grape juice for prune juice. So we served prune

juice at that communion service two years ago. That went

down in history, and I like to say we made

everyone regular that week. But today we're talking about what

it means to be all in. Pastor Morgan introduced this

series last week, and today I want to talk to

you about what you need to understand and appreciate if

you truly want to be all in adventure. And I

really believe that there are three things that you and

I need to be fully on the same page with

that we need to understand and appreciate. And the first

one is you need to understand and appreciate our journey.

You need to know our history. You need to know

what brought us to this point. Did you know the

first Sunday in November we formally celebrate our twenty.

Second birthday as a church.

I thought it was our twenty third birthday, but I

got corrected by my wife after the first service, so

I like to say the first service, that's our run

through service.

But I want to give you an idea of our

history of our church. Here it is.

Whenever I do discover venture, which is dinner with the

pastor we do it every month for all of the guests.

I do a brief overview of this. Now, when we

were only in existence for five years, it was easy.

Then it got to ten years, we could simplify it.

But now that we're at twenty two years, this takes

a while. But all of these dates symbolize a lot

of things, and I want to emphasize this that I

think it is impossible to separate the future of our

church from its past. I don't think you can appreciate

where we're going until you have a clear understanding of

where we've been.

There is a verse.

I quoted it a couple of weeks ago, but I

want to remind you again, and it's Matthew sixteen, verse eighteen,

and Jesus was talking to his disciples, and he specifically

began to address Peter and he said, I tell you

that you are Peter, and on this rock I will

build my church and the gates of Hell will not

overcome it.

Church. Honestly, if you want to be all in at venture,

you need.

To understand and appreciate the journey that the Church has

been on. It is impossible to separate our past from

our future. And over these twenty two years, I have

had an amazing board, just incredibly supportive men and women

that love the Church, love Jesus, bring all of their

unique giftings and talents to our regular board meetings. In fact,

in two weeks, for the first time in twenty two years,

we are actually doing a board retreat. There's a few

big visionary things that we need to navigate through discuss

and we're getting away for a couple days just to

figure those things out. But over the years we've had

an amazing board full of men and women that have

brought a great perspective to our meetings. But I will

be honest and say not everyone was a great fit.

They were great people, they weren't a great fit.

And I remember one.

Particular board member we had years ago, and this board

member hated talking about the history of the church. Just

any time I would refer to something that had happened

in the past, he would pull me aside after the

board meeting and he would correct me. Now, the way

that I operate, when I present a big initiative that

I want the board to wrestle through, I will always

share context, because it is impossible to look to the

future until you understand the journey that the church has

been on. So I will explain and bring every one

of our board members up to speed on where we've been,

what we've done in the past, and why we've landed

on this as a potential initiative for the church. And

every time I did it, he hated it. And it

was because he was new to the church. He'd been

around for like three years. He was a very experienced

board member. In fact, he had been a board member

of another church than that church had over the years,

celebrated over one hundred years of being in existence. Now,

when you are a part of a church church that's

over one hundred years old, you don't talk about the

past a lot. You know why, because no one presently

in the church knows it. No one knows the story

of how they bought the building they have heard urban

legends about it, but people hadn't experienced it. So he

wasn't used to going into board meetings where the past

influenced where the future was headed.

But at this church, there's a lot of us that.

Have been here since day one, Like we've been in

all eleven buildings that we have had as a church.

In fact, I want to show you a picture. This

isn't even eleven buildings. These are six of the locations

we've been since. This is the last ten to forty

five service. We're gonna have fun today, so we're gonna

play a game.

How many of you have been in all.

Six of these locations? Raise your hand, let me explain

what they are. Just some of your Like I bad eyesight,

I can't tell. That is Jackson High School. We were

actually there on two separate occasions. In the middle is

where we started Heatherwood Middle School. Over on the right,

we call this the ev Muck Building over by Boeing

down in the you've all get it. You all been

in this one. This is the building you're currently in.

If you didn't know you were in that one, please

see Morgan after the service because you need help. We

call this middle one. This is the first building that

we ever owned as a church. This is the Ashway Building.

We have a strong affinity for this building. Did you

know it's currently a church of Scientology. Maybe we should

never have sold it.

And then this we call this the Dome? All right?

Six buildings? How many of you? Raise your hand? Have

you been in all six? Look around?

Raise your hand up, Come on, be proud, you're ogs.

Look at these people have been at all six buildings.

That means they know the history. Put your hands down.

How many of you have been in five of these buildings?

Raise your hand? Okay, how many of you have been

in just four of these buildings?

Look at this? People have been in four of them.

Love it. Put your hands down, all right? How many

of you you be honest, you've only been in three?

Say some of you? Good looking up in the balcony.

I see you. Put your hands down. How many of you.

Have been in two of these buildings? Likely it was

the Dome or Jackson and this building. Raise your hand.

If people only been in two, that's why there's so

few of you. That's why we call those the dark

days of venture.

All right, how many of you have only been in

this building. Raise your hand all right, put your hands

down perfect.

This board member obviously is no longer on the board,

and that was because he struggled to appreciate our history

and how our history has dramatically influenced where we're going

in our future. Here's the challenge that you have. Di

and I are the founding pastors. So we have been

leading this church now for twenty two years. Most founding pastors,

this is statistically in America, most founding pastors transition from

the church they launched within the first three to five years.

We navigated through that. Did you know?

In addition, most lead pastors transition within two years of

a major building program. Do you know how many major

building programs I've had here, maybe eight, and we've navigated

through every one of them. Di and I soon will

share our twenty sixth anniversary, twenty sixth, twenty second It

all becomes a blurr. After a while twenty second year

of being the pastors of this church, we are planning

on retiring as the pastors of this church.

This will be the only church likely that Di and

I will ever lead.

And I say that because it is impossible when the

founding pastor is still leading the church twenty five years later.

To separate the past from the future.

If you want to be all in adventure, you need

to not just understand, but appreciate the journey that brought

us to this point. One of the things that blows

my mind over the years is my current office. Now,

we did the last expansion. We added the executive wing,

and I gotta be honest, I.

Love my office. My office is bougie.

You walk into my office, it is like you stepped

out of the TV show Yellowstone.

I am super proud of my office.

And those of you that don't understand our history just think,

of course pastor big church wants a big office. You

don't know the offices that I've had over the years.

Let me just share with you a couple. I had

an office in the Mill Creek Town Center that my

little square box square in the middle of it was

a pole in the middle of the office, a pole.

I had my dad bumped up to the pole.

When I would have people meet with me, they would

have to choose which side of the pole they needed.

To sit on.

That was one of my offices, and up to then,

that was my nicest office. One of my offices I

had was in an industrial space on both LeVert Highway

in one eightieth It was painted smurf blue. It smelled

so bad of diesel fuel from the company that was

next door that every hour I had to leave the

office because my eyes were getting bloodshot from inhaling diesel

fuel and just breathe oxygen outside and not good oxygen

because it was bothele Livert Highway oxygen.

So I have seen all of these things.

In fact, did you know, Morgan Butcher one time had

an office that actually the boiler room at the church.

It wasn't in office, it was a boiler room. But

we told Morgan, here's your office as the youth pastor.

You cannot separate the past from our future.

And let me tell you why, because the past is

a reminder that God's hand is on this church. When

Jesus looked at Peter and he said, Peter, on this rock,

I'll build my church, and the gates of Hell will

not prevail against it church. I cannot tell you how

many times venture church in twenty two years has had

to fight the gates of hell. Do you know how

many times the enemy has tried to shut this church?

Down. I know the stories. I know all the mere miracles.

I know this building you were sitting in is an

absolute miracle.

Nobody here knows how. I had to fight city council.

I had to fight the county council. I had to

fight the environmentalists. I had to fight peta, I had

to fight the neighbors. I had to fight blenders. I

had to fight everybody to get this building bill. And

when we first had a service here, I couldn't believe it.

I'd given up a long time ago that this was

even possible. And every time we have a worship service

in here, and there's one like in the middle of August,

and I'm looking people on the balcony, the floor is

almost full youth at the altar and they're singing this

song about revival.

I'm thinking, that's why we went to war to get

this thing built. Did you notice.

When I said how many of you this is the

only church building that you've ever been in with venture

that means you're new within the last six years, that

was eighty percent of you. Can I tell you why

we built this building because we believed you'd come someday.

We believed you'd come find Jesus here. That's why that

twenty percent of people that have been here before this building.

That's why we gave money.

That's why we went back to a high school again,

after having multiple buildings that we'd own. We did all

of that believing someday, if we build it, people will come,

and people's lives will be changed, and the church will grow.

When we see you raise your hands, we are reminded

once again that venture was a God idea long before

it was a grad school thesis pro For me, you

can't separate the past from our future. Why are we

doing what we're doing in the kids area because there's

gonna come a day in a couple of years. I'm

gonna ask how many of you are new to the

church since we expanded and updated our kids area, and

fifty percent of the hands are gonna raise, and those

of you that are here right now are gonna look

around and think, that's why I sacrificially gave for that.

I gave so that this miracle would happen.

Church.

You cannot appreciate the future until you understand the past.

We just had Jared ming here a couple of weeks ago,

and Jared and I have spoke for each other's churches

for twenty one years. We were on staff together in Modesto.

He was the worship pastor. I was the youth pastor.

I moved to Seattle, die and I we start venture.

He moves to la Him and de Vet and they

start higher vision. And the most amazing thing for both

of us are seeing number one, how large our churches are.

But number two, we're still pastoring those churches over twenty

years later. You can't appreciate the future until you understand

the past. And I'm reminded again we had a promise

from God on this rock, all build my church and

the gates of Hell will not prevail against it. For

about the first fifteen years of the church, there was

one verse. It was the theme of eighty percent of

my sermons. Some of you, I'm gonna mention it. If

you've been here for at least five years, you'll think, okay,

I can finish that verse because Brandon quoted it all

the time.

In fact, I mentioned this.

In the first service, and people started sending me pictures

of when.

I wrote that verse on the floor of this building.

And it's Galatians six', Nine and is this great, reminder

let us not become weary and doing, good because at

the proper time you will reap a harvest if you

do not give. Up raise your hand. Again if this

is the only church, building this new building At venture

you've ever, been and raise.

It look it, Up raise it, up be proud everybody.

promised that if we didn't give, up we would reap a.

Miracle if you wonder if miracles happen, today you are

sitting in one right. NOW i want you to appreciate

the history of our, church And i've made it easy for.

Our core.

Values our core values are so important that they are

written on the pillars that hold up the roof of this.

Building people ask me all the time when they hear

the story THAT i wrote HOW i would plant a

church as the thesis for My masters Of divinity. PROJECT

i never planned on planting a. Church but AFTER i

had finished my thesis and turned it, IN i felt

like The Holy spirit spoke to me and, Said, brandon

will you give your thirties to church? Planning after like

two years of two months gives me of wrestling through

Die AND i finally, said we will give our thirties

to church. Planning the number one question THAT i get

asked from everybody when they hear that is CAN i

see your? Thesis we do have a copy of You

i'm not sure exactly where it. IS i will say

it's not a priority to find, it copy it and

give you, it And i'll tell you why because we

threw it out after the first, week because there is

no manual for planting a. Church they're all, different the

journey is. Different the only thing in the thesis that

still applies today is that we wanted a church that

was built on its core, values that there would be

these non negotiables that in the history of the church

would never. Change you need to know these core. Values

these are who we. Are these explain why we make

the decisions that we. Do these are the values that

we want, you as a part of venture to embody,

also and they are number one.

Mission we are driven by our.

Mission jesus his last command to his, disciples to his,

followers it's called The Great. Commission you find it In

matthew chapter twenty, eight verse. Nineteen jesus, said go and

make disciples of all. Nations why do we have a

group of teenagers right now In Puerto, Rico because we

are fulfilling what is the.

Great commission to.

Us we are sending people on missions trips because that's

what we should. Do go and make disciples of all,

nations baptizing them in the name of The, father of The,

son and of The Holy, spirit and teaching them to

obey everything That i've. COMMANDED i tell, everybody this church

exists for. Mission you're way. Early you can just chill

for a little. BIT i decided to go, along BUT

i appreciate you being. Here how many of the six

buildings have you been?

In so Four.

Gary's men in Four gary's had me embarrass him publicly

Buildings you exist for. Mission the church exists for. Mission

you know?

Why the church doesn't exist so that your kids have

a safe environment at Kids. Church the church doesn't exist

so that your teenagers have a youth ministry where they

can find. Friends did you know the church doesn't exist

so you can have a small. Group those aren't the

reasons the church. Exists the church exists for. Mission in other,

words the church exists so that people that don't Know

jesus can have the opportunity to begin a relationship with.

HIM i hope you appreciate the journey that brought you

to this. POINT i hope you remember the story of

when you had that aha, moment the light bulb went

on and you began a relationship With, jesus and then

my biggest hope is that you want everyone else to

experience the same life changing relationship With jesus that you've.

Had The church exists for.

Mission by the, way those other, things they're, important but

they're secondary to the reason that the church, exists which is.

Mission in, FACT i believe every follower Of jesus that

you exist for, mission and that you should be regularly asking,

yourself how's? Mission how AM i doing? Mission one core?

Value community is our second core. Value we're devoted to

authentic community and authentic commitment to each. OTHER i Know

Pastor morgan did an amazing job teaching on this last,

week but let me remind You hebrews. Ten hebrews ten,

says let us consider how we may spur one another

on toward love and good. DEEDS i think we all

agree we should be challenging each, other encouraging each other

to do. Good we should be challenging each, other encouraging each,

other inspiring each other to love people to love each.

Other we all agree on. That the problem is we

forget the end of the.

Verse it says. Not he says we should all agree

love good, deeds but not give up meeting, together.

As some are in the habit of. Doing you know

the crazy thing about this? Verse this was written over

two thousand years. Ago it's almost like it was written

for the church in twenty twenty.

Six.

NOW i love the fact That jesus And christianity is

becoming cool. AGAIN i love that Gen z is finding

faith In jesus like. CRAZY i think it's. Awesome but

there is this rising contingent of people that say, THIS

i Love, jesus BUT i don't love the. Church i'm A,

CHRISTIAN i just don't do the church. Thing, Okay i've

been leading venture for twenty two. YEARS i was a

youth pastor for twelve years before, that So i've been

professionally a minister for thirty four. Years i've had thousands

of peace people call me pastor over those thirty four.

Years and in my thirty four, YEARS i have not

seen an exception to this. RULE i have never seen a,

growing thriving follower Of jesus that is not committed and

connected to a body. Believers the myth That i'm A

CHRISTIAN i just don't do the church is one of

the greatest lies of the. Enemy for every one person

that you might know somewhere in your life that is

a Committed, christian they just don't do. CHURCH i will

show you a hundred that said that that it wasn't

true when it was all said and.

Done in, Fact i'll go this.

Far if you are not consistently attending church over a

two month period of, time you are likely. Backsliding, well

you got really. QUIET i think those two things go

hand in. Hand why is That because IF i can't

make it without being connected to a body of, believers

it's really hard for me to believe that you. Can

we need to, commit and committing to a church is

not like being committed to your coffee. Shop you, know

some of you you're really into a coffee shop when

you live in the neighborhood and it's close and convenient

and you like the brand of. Coffee but as soon

as one or two things change you. Bail you need

to like, say this is my. FAMILY i am choosing

to commit to these, people which means you commit in

the good and it's easy to commit when everything's.

Good but you also commit when you're.

At Jackson high schoo for the second time you have

no building because you demoed the building and all you're

doing is raising money to hopefully build a. Building you

commit in those. Times you commit when it's good you

commit when it's, bad you commit when it's, easy you

commit when it's.

Hard that is what family.

Does if you're constantly switching your commitment from one church

to the, next this is because you view church from

the perspective solely of what DO i get out of?

Church not what CAN i.

Contribute if ALL i think in my family is what

DO i get out of this, family Then i'm not

a really good. Father Then i'm really not a very

good family, member because INSTEAD i should be thinking how

DO i? Invest how DO i? Contribute how DO i?

Help that is the.

MOTIVATION i think it's important for us to be in community.

Together we're, Stronger we're meant.

To live life.

Together how many of you you're dating yourself? Here how

many of you remember THE tv Show? Cheers see you're

all the ones who weren't raised in church because it's

that you know. Someone our desire. Adventure how did they

Generosity we want to create a culture of inspirational. GENEROSITY

i believe it is irresistible For god to bless a generous.

CHURCH i also believe it is irresistible For god to

bless a generous. Person so we unapologetically challenge you to,

tithe to give above your tithe. Generously because generosity is

an act of. Worship generosity is a practical way for

us to testify About god's goodness and.

Provision generosity is.

Contagious did you know that radical generosity is something that everybody,

celebrates even people that don't go to, church have no faith.

Whatsoever it astounds. People here's an.

Example we have a horrible wildfire's happening in our, state

but it's on the east. Side it's five hours disconnected

from you AND. I but last week we took a

spontaneous offering for The spokane. Wildfires you guys gave over

twenty thousand thousand. Dollars has proved. It generosity is something

that everybody. Celebrates radical generosity blows people's.

Mind you know, why because we're naturally.

Stingy but when we see people, give and by the,

way when we see the total of all of our

collaborative giving twenty thousand dollars spontaneously in the middle of the,

summer in all of the different fundraising campaigns that venture

has been in the middle, of is pretty. AWESOME i

was so proud to be all an. Adventure you need

to understand and. Appreciate, finally number, three our mission statement

and our. Creed what is our mission statement at our?

Church Make jesus. Famous it's so. Easy everybody knows. It

you can quote.

It it's on the. Wall it's three.

Words even like the person that's the worst at memorization

can remember three words Make jesus. Famous the fun thing

for me is all SUMMER i spoke at churches all

over AND i would talk about, like Make jesus famous

is our church's mission.

Statement and now.

Churches are dropping all of their fall merch so it's

starting to hit online social media right. Now ours drops next,

week by the, Way and so many of the churches

THAT i spoke at like the Make Jesus famous thing

that it's on all THEIR t.

Shirts SO i will.

Be wearing MANY t shirts from many different churches with

our mission statement on. It but it's just this reminder

that we're not here to make venture, famous that we're

here to Make jesus. Famous that this is not about

everybody knowing Who brandon, is but everybody knowing Who jesus.

Is Make jesus famous is broken down in our, creed

which has three. Parts you hear me quoted all the.

Time did we Believe jesus is the hope of the world.

Period there was a famous pastor about fifteen years ago

wrote a ton of books and coined the phrase the

church is the.

Hope of the. World we are not the hope of the.

World we are screw.

Ups we do too many embarrassing things to be the

hope of the. World we were never meant to have

that level of pressure, or by the, way that level of.

Credit when things go, well the church is not the

hope of the. World he is.

Wrong jesus is the hope of the. World jesus will

not let you, down he will not fail. You by the,

way it ultimately wasn't a church that changed your. Life

it was a relationship With jesus that changed.

It jesus is the hope of the.

World second part of our creed is we believe The

gospel changes. LIVES i get asked all the time what

is our preaching, strategy AND i, say we preach through

books of The.

BIBLE i shared that.

With somebody a couple days, ago and the pastor of

the church, said, oh, yeah once a year we do

an in depth study through a book of The bible

for two. Months AND i was, like, adventure we do

a topical series once a year because all we do

is teach through The. Bible in, fact starting In, September

i'm teaching a series Through ezra And. Nehemiah some of

you didn't even Know ezra And nehemiah were books of The.

Bible by the end of this, year you will know

it backwards and. Forwards and by the way you were

going to conclude, THIS i did not know this was

in The.

Bible that is.

Amazing it is totally applicable to my life. Today and

my hope and prayer is you SAY i need to

study The bible.

More CAN i tell you?

Why because it's not my persuasive words that change. You

it's not some creative one liner that a church creates

that changes.

You it is Studying god's.

Word it transforms you from the inside out and you

will never be the same. Again my, goal beyond, anything

is to make you love reading and studying this because

this will change.

You So jesus is the hope of the.

World The gospel changes, lies but there is a spot

for us that The Church big c Is god's chosen

agency to advance this. Message why do we? Exist we

exist to tell Everybody jesus is the hope of the.

World hope of the world is not in your four

to one K the hope of the world is not

in who you. Elect the hope of the world is

not in a, Person it is not in a, Country

it is not in a. Government it is In. Jesus

he is the hope of the. World and by the way,

this if you allow this to penetrate the hardness of your.

Heart and some of you are here this morning and

your heart is. Hard but if you allow this book

to penetrate the hardness of your, heart it will transform your.

Life you will never be the. Same you can go

and Play gary Because i'm. Done he was our one

year anniversary as a. Church my, pastor Also Pastor tyrone's,

Pastor Glenn, bertow came and he spoke at our one

year anniverse AND i gotta be, HONEST i was a

little bit embarrassed to have. Him we were at The

Heatherwood Middle school cafeteria on metal folding. Chairs might have

been two hundred and fifty people, there AND i knew

this was probably the smallest crowd That Pastor berteau had

spoken in front of in five.

Years but he came and he.

PREACHED i sat in the front, row and As Pastor berteau,

preached he talked about being committed to. CHURCH i remember

sitting there, thinking you can't Tell seattle people. This they're

all gonna leave if you ask them to be. Committed

and Then he ended his message by, saying here's WHAT

i want you to do. Today he, Goes brandon is

going to be standing out in the lobby, greeting.

And as you, exit if this is your, CHURCH i

want you to.

Shake his, hand look him in the, eyes and, say

our families committed to this. Church AND i remember when

he said, THAT i felt so, awkward AND i remember
