"Anger” Part 1 | Developing Christians for Christ Series | Pastor Carl Henry

[SPEAKER_00]: to be angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: So what do we learn about anger and where it starts from, inside of man, right, to the spirit, it's weird of man.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then it goes on it says, in that verse, for anger, restists in the bosom, inside if you will, the heart of a fool.

[SPEAKER_00]: So if you went in reverse order, a fool is then quick or hasty inside of him to allow anger to happen.

[SPEAKER_00]: So God says,

[SPEAKER_00]: people that love anger are fools.

[SPEAKER_00]: How we doing on a Sunday morning here so far?

[SPEAKER_00]: This is such a blessing in encouragement today, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, guess what, we need to talk about things.

[SPEAKER_00]: We need to talk about issues, and that's what we're doing.

[SPEAKER_00]: We've just finished up with contentment.

[SPEAKER_00]: We looked at the opposite of that, which has to do with covering.

[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about how our mind needs to come to a place of contentment.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to be looking at anger for a couple of weeks.

[SPEAKER_00]: We cannot conclude this one in one week.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, is there that much?

[SPEAKER_00]: Folks, I have three pages of notes.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't have no tujually, so we got a lot on this subject because God talks about it an awful lot.

[SPEAKER_00]: The texts and Romans, we'll see some of these in a roundabout way as we go through the series.

[SPEAKER_00]: But in that text in Romans 12, he's dealing with how we interact with people that don't like us.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now I realize we as Christians, everybody loves us.

[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody thinks we are just the greatest thing and nobody would ever get angry with us or mean to us and that we find once in a while people really don't like us within family as well as within work relationships and people can just flat out be as mean as a hornet and they attack you and you didn't do anything and you know you only don't what you're supposed to do and yet people can sometimes attack you how do we handle that as Christians or we vengeance.

[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get them, we'll pray they have a flat tire on the way home, you know, just sick of the word.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, no, no, no, no, that's what he's saying, you overcome evil by doing good to people.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're actually supposed to be nice people as Christians.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're not supposed to be wanting bad things to happen to other people, even though they did something bad to you, you smile and you go overboard to try to help them.

[SPEAKER_00]: What I say to people is this, and if they put the boxing gloves on, and they're ready to fight you, don't put your boxing gloves on.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's really hard for them to fight against somebody that doesn't want to fight back.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's really a kind of a boring thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they might look at you as weak at first, and that's fine, but then they're going to realize this guy's actually smarter than me.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm actually the one that's so full in the situation, because I've allowed my emotions

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we're dealing with as Christians.

[SPEAKER_00]: We as Christians can sometimes be over emotional people.

[SPEAKER_00]: And yet what we're going to learn in Galatians is that we are actually happy to have control of these type of urges that we may have.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let me give you Webster's definition of anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: In the Latin form, it means to choke into strangle somebody.

[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty clear, isn't it?

[SPEAKER_00]: I can't stand you, it's that spot.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, Westbury, detailed, it really is.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's even a route when you look at the Greek form of it is just like you are.

[SPEAKER_00]: They're so angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, in Steven's life, they're now they nashed at him with their teeth, you know, when they're just hurting, we could grip a hole in you and throw you out and just

[SPEAKER_00]: The primary sense is to press or to squeeze and to make narrow.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like you're getting this a hold of this.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like you're going to control this situation.

[SPEAKER_00]: It definitely has a violent passion inside of the mind that is excited by a real or supposed injury.

[SPEAKER_00]: Meaning, I think you did me wrong.

[SPEAKER_00]: So now I'm going to go after you.

[SPEAKER_00]: You follow me?

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like whether it's real or whether we think, this is what somebody meant or did by that action.

[SPEAKER_00]: We get enraged or excited inside, become violently passionate to go after that person and we're gonna make them feel worse than they made me feel.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's not Christian.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're following where this anger doesn't go along with Christianity.

[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's gonna find it very hard to find anywhere

[SPEAKER_00]: And other symptoms have anything to do with something positive.

[SPEAKER_00]: But next week, you got to come back because we're going to show you the balance of this subject of anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anger by this excitement and by wanting to injure or hurt a person and as Webster defines it, offer to a relation.

[SPEAKER_00]: friend or party to which one is attached, okay?

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not somebody that you just saw at Walmart.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is somebody that you interact with on a daily basis that you can show a hangar towards them.

[SPEAKER_00]: I maybe this never happens in your home, but you know, one or the other goes to work.

[SPEAKER_00]: They had a really, really bad day, and they've suppressed it all.

[SPEAKER_00]: They got home, and who do they take it out on?

[SPEAKER_00]: Their family.

[SPEAKER_00]: They take it out when they're spouse.

[SPEAKER_00]: They take it out on the dog.

[SPEAKER_00]: They take it out on somebody that they can lash out at, right?

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I know that never happens in your home.

[SPEAKER_00]: I know you've never noticed, you're at home.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're just having a cup of coffee, and your spouse comes in.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you could just tell the boxing gloves are on already because the door has been slammed, and you could tell the stomping and the throwing of the shoes.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is not been a good day for them.

[SPEAKER_00]: they're very angry inside and it's you can almost sense this boiling and so there again you say well how do we handle a person that is angry and you're just in innocent bystander we're going to talk about that one too so you got to come back you got to make sure because we're going to answer some of these things because this is a real world and this is a really motion that we have inside of us

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, why bring this one up?

[SPEAKER_00]: About a year ago, I sat down and I thought, what do I counsel, who do I counsel?

[SPEAKER_00]: What am I dealing with in people in my office?

[SPEAKER_00]: And so I started writing down, and I came up with over 30 different subjects.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anger was one of them.

[SPEAKER_00]: Contentment was one of them.

[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about the home January through May, and the list has been going on.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to deal with in our minds as Christians.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have to be ready, folks.

[SPEAKER_00]: And our mind needs to be prepared.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have to be able to stand with the word and know what we're supposed to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: And what I'm sensing is sometimes, maybe because we're not a word, maybe we're not listening to the Spirit of God inside of us, but it's almost like we're taking over our lives and it's hurting us and it's hurting our reputation as Christians.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so we don't wanna do that.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, what do you mean?

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm 20 something, Lori and I are married.

[SPEAKER_00]: Don't even know if we had any children yet, can't remember.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I remember it was a day that was a mountain top experience for it.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was a day of fasting.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was a day of prayer.

[SPEAKER_00]: I have been saved maybe about two years at the most, probably more like one year.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm a brand new Christian and I am so on fire for God, I just want to just do everything just right.

[SPEAKER_00]: It says fast, sure, I'll go a week.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I was just overboard, overzealous with everything, not that I did it for a week, but I was overzealous.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it was one of those days when it was a top of the world and I come home just beaming.

[SPEAKER_00]: because I made it through the day, and I come home from work, and sure enough, as soon as I came in, something negative was thrown at me right away.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you say, what was it?

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember.

[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing I remembered thinking was this, this isn't fair.

[SPEAKER_00]: I've been praying, I've been fasting, I've been loving my Lord all day long, and I walk home.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then I have negative three things thrown to me.

[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't fair.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I was angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: I went from this beautiful relationship with the Lord and in a minute's time, I was enraged inside of my heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I took this chair.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I went, that's not right, and went down on it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it went into a little bit of pieces.

[SPEAKER_00]: So I gathered up all the pieces of pine and I took it down to the basement and I threw it in the corner because we had an old coal stove and the basement, that's all we needed to house and I was going to burn it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I didn't burn it right away.

[SPEAKER_00]: A little history behind this table in chairs is that my father was the one that refinished the table and re-glood everything to make everything all solid and my daddy at that time was not a Christian.

[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, knowing that you need to witness to everybody, I'm witnessing to my father about accepting Jesus as his personal Savior because you're going to have joy in your life.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he came, we were dumps in some wood down into the basement, and while we're down there, they looked in the corner.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, what's that?

[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, that's the chair.

[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't even have to say what happened.

[SPEAKER_00]: He knew exactly what happened.

[SPEAKER_00]: And my unsaved father looked at me and said, boy, you better get a hold of your anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: You want to talk about humble pie?

[SPEAKER_00]: Who is teaching who?

[SPEAKER_00]: These emotions that can get a hold of us will cause us to say things that we wish we'd never would have said to do things we wish we never would have done.

[SPEAKER_00]: hurt relationships that we will probably maybe not ever be able to fully mend.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's because we don't have self-control that comes as a result of the spirit inside of us.

[SPEAKER_00]: A Christians is time for us to get a hold of our emotions.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have to take these things that can boil up inside of us

[SPEAKER_00]: and not allow the emotions that, by the way, we can't trust to take over our lives and hurt us, hurt our testimony.

[SPEAKER_00]: What are we trying to do for the Lord?

[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes, our emotions can actually take us opposite of what we are trying to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, where does it ultimately come from?

[SPEAKER_00]: Look at Proverbs with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: Proverbs in chapter 21.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're looking at just one verse here, verse 24.

[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, good verse before it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's read them a couple verses before.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's read twenty two also down to twenty four.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we're in Proverbs, chapter twenty one, starting a verse twenty two.

[SPEAKER_00]: A wise man, scale of the city of the mighty, and cast it down the strength of the confidence thereof.

[SPEAKER_00]: who so keep it his mouth and his tongue, keep it his soul from trouble.

[SPEAKER_00]: So God's saying there, control the mouth if you can't control the mouth, then guess who's going to be in trouble?

[SPEAKER_00]: You are.

[SPEAKER_00]: Number 24, proud and hotty or one who was lifted up.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, I feel like I'm better than anybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's a hotty spirit that you feel that you're above everybody else.

[SPEAKER_00]: So proud and hotty scorner is his name, who?

[SPEAKER_00]: Dealeth in proud wrath.

[SPEAKER_00]: So now we have a word, a derivative, if you will, of wrath with anger that is associated with pride.

[SPEAKER_00]: So when something doesn't go our way, if we don't feel it is right, the me factor gets involved with it all, and I'm listed up on how is this going to make me look?

[SPEAKER_00]: And then that pride ends up lashing out in wrath

[SPEAKER_00]: And as a result of that, as a result of that, you are considered one who was a scorner, and that is the name that is associated with you, that you're a mouth and what you're doing with people, is you're ripping everybody else apart through your pride that ends up being raffle, vengeance in anger, and you start ripping people to shreds.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's almost like people that, you know, I wonder, well, I wonder why I don't have any friends.

[SPEAKER_00]: Where everybody you're around, all you're doing is ripping them apart or somebody else apart.

[SPEAKER_00]: And making yourself look good.

[SPEAKER_00]: And God says that is led by the pride that brings out anger or wrath inside to tear apart other people, and that's the squirting part of it all.

[SPEAKER_00]: So pride inside is where anger

[SPEAKER_00]: originates as we learned earlier.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's inside the spirit of man.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's inside our chest.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's inside of our breast.

[SPEAKER_00]: It happens right if you will, inside of the heart that is sinful and deceitful and it is a desperately wicked thing inside of our heart.

[SPEAKER_00]: So God says, we gotta get a hold of this thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Folks, I have literally, and this is not an exhaustive list, I probably have 30 plus verses that are all isolated things that deal with anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: I give this out.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, who do you give it up most to, young men?

[SPEAKER_00]: So I give it up to most of all, or young men, 20 somethings that are working through their life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And off times, there's frustration going on in their lives.

[SPEAKER_00]: things maybe aren't turning out the way they wanted it to all these major responsibilities are coming on their lives all at once and there's an anger inside they they're not a teenager anymore they don't have that freedom now it's this responsibility thing now they're done with school i got to get this job that i thought i was going to pay a lot and i'm i'm working here instead and i'm making one of one and there's this frustration

[SPEAKER_00]: for many young men in their 20s.

[SPEAKER_00]: But that doesn't mean this is only who goes through it as we are going to see some examples.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have to realize where anger comes from and it comes from within.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want to show you a couple of illustrations today.

[SPEAKER_00]: Would you turn with me to the book of Genesis and we're going to be seeing each week on this subject, illustrations, and how it can then show you and I,

[SPEAKER_00]: Why is it that we go through what we go through?

[SPEAKER_00]: Why is it that we are sometimes even attacked by a way of anger?

[SPEAKER_00]: And how does it also affect me or how does it affect them?

[SPEAKER_00]: While you're turning here, I want you to remember something.

[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, Roma 12, vengeance is mine, say it's the Lord.

[SPEAKER_00]: I will repay.

[SPEAKER_00]: So by learning that concept, when somebody does wrong towards us,

[SPEAKER_00]: Our reaction when it comes to persecution is not retaliation, but ours is to pray, to witness, and it is a time of darkness that's happening in our life that we can become the greatest light, because the rest of the world, the rest of your office, is going to retaliate.

[SPEAKER_00]: and they're going to see who wins at the end, see who gets fired, see who goes up the corporate ladder and that it's just that vengeful type of a spirit.

[SPEAKER_00]: Folks, you know what that does?

[SPEAKER_00]: It just takes you into the spiraling.

[SPEAKER_00]: that you don't even know if you're going to come out on top or not, and you're going to be miserable, you're going to be taking out on everybody else, you're going to be beating yourself up as a Christian because you know you're not supposed to have that kind of a spirit, and then you're lashing out, it is just a spiraling, and you're not going to be a happy Christian because you're angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: You would never think that anger would be associated with religion.

[SPEAKER_00]: Would you?

[SPEAKER_00]: All religions are seeking peace, really?

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we know Genesis 3, we're in Genesis 4, but we know Genesis 3, man falls into sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: That I can't give you the chapter, old people.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, you're going to Genesis 4.

[SPEAKER_00]: And while you're turning there, we know in chapter 3 is when Adam and Eve particularly the fruit they weren't supposed to and sin entered into the world.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that affected everything in this universe.

[SPEAKER_00]: it affected the animal life, the plants, just everything was affected.

[SPEAKER_00]: And because of that sin that had entered into the world, when Adam and Eve finally had children came able, sure enough, that sinful nature that they had received was passed on down to them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's why when you have children, as wonderful and beautiful as you think they are,

[SPEAKER_00]: And they are, they're wonderful, and they are beautiful, but they got your nature.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they got this sinful nature, and that's why they look at you in a face that I did not do that.

[SPEAKER_00]: It was down.

[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, you were standing there watching them do it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And they could still with a straightest face, lie to you, straight it your face, because you're seeing yourself.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're seeing that nature that you have given to them and it's in you, and now it's in them.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what happened with Cain and Abel.

[SPEAKER_00]: So let's see it, verse one.

[SPEAKER_00]: Adam knew Eve, his wife, she conceived and bear Cain, first born.

[SPEAKER_00]: And said, I have gotten a man from the Lord, and she began, she again, bear his brother Abel.

[SPEAKER_00]: Abel was a keeper of sheep.

[SPEAKER_00]: but Cain was a killer of the ground.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's stop and look at this.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, are both jobs important, absolutely.

[SPEAKER_00]: Matter of fact, God said to Adam, listen, you are going to be farmer and you are going to kill the ground and this is what I want you to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a good thing, but it goes on and says, in the process of time, it doesn't say how long, that's for those who are the Bible students and criticisers of the Word of God,

[SPEAKER_00]: Because we don't know how old they were, we don't know how many other siblings there are, where to gain get his wife and all that kind of stuff.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't even know.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no time that has talked about here.

[SPEAKER_00]: But in this process of time, came broad for the ground.

[SPEAKER_00]: And notice this is an offering unto the Lord.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, is that a good thing?

[SPEAKER_00]: I, you say, where did even think of this idea?

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you look back in Genesis 3,

[SPEAKER_00]: After Adam and Eve, for took of the fruit that they weren't supposed to, that God had a sacrifice of an animal to take that skin and to create clothing for Adam and Eve because of the knowledge of good and evil and understanding right and wrong and nakedness and how lust could be there and so they began to clothe themselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so with that, there seems to be

[SPEAKER_00]: something that God began, and that was that there would be an offering.

[SPEAKER_00]: No doubt, we are not given everything, that there was, in other words, this just seems to be something that was a very positive thing, and God takes ables and accepts his offering.

[SPEAKER_00]: So we know it's a good thing, but in their mind, they're saying, I want to come to you, God, and I'm going to give you my best.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so, as Cain, he takes the grains and the weeds, the barley, and everything that he has been growing and harvesting, and he brings it over to God, and he says, God, this is what I have for you.

[SPEAKER_00]: You say, is there anything wrong with a grain offering?

[SPEAKER_00]: You look later on, and you'll see there are meal or grain offerings later on.

[SPEAKER_00]: But there was something that went beyond just the thought of what he was bringing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because as you see what happens later on, do you see just a little bit of pride with Cain?

[SPEAKER_00]: You know the story?

[SPEAKER_00]: You see a little bit of God looking at the heart of why he did what he did, and by the way folks, that's what God is looking for us.

[SPEAKER_00]: And in us, as we are doing for him, not just what great works we have done, but why we are doing them?

[SPEAKER_00]: The Spirit by which we are doing them.

[SPEAKER_00]: So even though we may applaud man for what they have done, God may be up and heaven going, I don't even like that one.

[SPEAKER_00]: See, because God looks past the outward, and God looks at the inside, what we're doing and why we're doing it.

[SPEAKER_00]: We need to be humbled, Christians, and serve Him with humility, realizing we're not serving man, we are serving our Savior.

[SPEAKER_00]: And therefore we have to do it with the right spirit.

[SPEAKER_00]: Amen.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I was hoping for about there.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's what I was kind of hoping for.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so he brings, and then, of course, he goes on and says, an able, also, verse 4, he also brought the first thing to the flock and the fat thereof, and the Lord had respect unto able unto his offering, but unto cane, and to his offering, he had not respect, and cane was, here it is, very,

[SPEAKER_00]: for a very angry and what happened the countenance, the whole face totally changed.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can almost see them, oh, it's just no fair.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand.

[SPEAKER_00]: I did all this work.

[SPEAKER_00]: I did all of these things and I bring it to God says, yeah, I don't like getting you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't understand.

[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, do you think, do you think King was angry with just his brother?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think he was really, when you look at who he was involved with, wasn't it God that was not respecting the offering?

[SPEAKER_00]: Now a little thing that we've learned in the last 15 years through Christian psychology is that it's okay to be angry with God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Find that in the Bible, please, for me, and when you do, tell me if they lived or not.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[SPEAKER_00]: God is God.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is sovereign.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is all powerful.

[SPEAKER_00]: We are the clay.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is the potter.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is making.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he made this whole thing of offerings, not man.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't Christians.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have the right to get angry at God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Like God, the bad person up there.

[SPEAKER_00]: He just doesn't understand my problems.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'll trust me.

[SPEAKER_00]: He understands, but he might be trying to chisel some things out of your life.

[SPEAKER_00]: Or it might be trying to implement things in your life, like anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you get angry with God, can you imagine how you handle man?

[SPEAKER_00]: You see in it, we have a good time in church today or what?

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have a right to get anger with God the very first time man gets angry.

[SPEAKER_00]: taking what he has done, if I'll be in his own self-righteousness, that God would not accept the self-righteousness, the works of man for atonement.

[SPEAKER_00]: To be at one, that's the thought of atonement at one with God.

[SPEAKER_00]: God says, I don't want your fruit in your veggies and the things that you've killed.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking for something else.

[SPEAKER_00]: Abel, on the other hand, brings the best

[SPEAKER_00]: Atonement is taken in sacrifice and God says that I accept or that I respect.

[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, the pattern that he gave in Genesis 3 for Adam and Eve was an animal sacrifice.

[SPEAKER_00]: Able followed through with the pattern of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: King through self-righteousness was coming to God and saying, accept me what I have done.

[SPEAKER_00]: Able was bringing to God the sacrifice of another.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood of a lamb, hmm, I wonder who that picture is?

[SPEAKER_00]: Picks is Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: As John said, behold, the Lamb of God which take it the way the sins of the world.

[SPEAKER_00]: and the sacrifice there that was pictured, as God gave the picture of one that was innocent, dying on behalf of the others to cover them, we are covered with the righteousness of our God that we don't deserve because it's the sacrifice of another for us.

[SPEAKER_00]: The blood was shed for us.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not our own blood.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the blood of an innocent one.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're the guilty.

[SPEAKER_00]: We can't wash away our own sin with our own blood.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no penance, there's no steps you can crawl up and have your knees, buddy, and say, God, look at what I'm doing to sacrifice myself for you.

[SPEAKER_00]: God says, I don't want that, that self-righteousness.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking for the righteousness that comes from myself through Jesus Christ, for the sin of the whole world.

[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why if you're here saying, but I go to church, and I do this, and I do that, and that's what's gonna get me to heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're in trouble, mister.

[SPEAKER_00]: Because if it's by what you have done, your works.

[SPEAKER_00]: Then why did Jesus have to die?

[SPEAKER_00]: As Galatians tell us, in chapter I do not frustrate the grace of God, because if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead and vain.

[SPEAKER_00]: In other words, His death was meaningless if there was any other way for man to cleanse

[SPEAKER_00]: from sin and do you want what God?

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's Christ alone, isn't it?

[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what God is like, I like Ables.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's what I want.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I desire.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, follow me on this.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, so this is what enrages King.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to see a pattern in the form of religion.

[SPEAKER_00]: The self-righteous despise and are angry with those who have the righteousness

[SPEAKER_00]: And when you look at all of the history between Israel and the Arab people, and you'll see this in Galatians also, that there's always a battle going on between the two, you know why?

[SPEAKER_00]: Because they, the Arab people say it was through not Isaac, but Ishmael, that the blessings came, that Ishmael was the one on the Mount, on the rock that was sacrifice, and it

[SPEAKER_00]: And they take that whole credit to say it is Abraham through that son, through haygar, and the scriptures are very clear on that, and they actually despise those who look through Isaac as the son of promise, and his Galatians says to that point, and we say to this very day, they're so fighting.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if you look in a text, God reveals something to us, if both were to have a treaty,

[SPEAKER_00]: If both were to lay down arms, if both said I'm not going to do anything, who do you think is going to throw the first punch?

[SPEAKER_00]: God says, Arabs, because it's the self-righteousness, where the wars and stem from pride, anger, battling.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's another illustration I want to give you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Look with me to the book of numbers.

[SPEAKER_00]: Doing okay?

[SPEAKER_00]: Are they doing okay?

[SPEAKER_00]: All right, don't want to worry out.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're looking at numbers, and chapter 20, we're going to give you the chapter this time.

[SPEAKER_00]: Numbers chapter 20.

[SPEAKER_00]: The numbers, the book of numbers is about the

[SPEAKER_00]: And part of that whole 40 years, and there is the ins and outs of what happens in the different stories in these chapters.

[SPEAKER_00]: And in chapter 20, we're kind of in a midst of a time period when Israel had pretty much just about had it.

[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it is just miserable out here in the wilderness.

[SPEAKER_00]: And my fact of griping and complaining, the murmuring was happening.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there's times that God says to Moses, you know what?

[SPEAKER_00]: I am so tired of these people.

[SPEAKER_00]: How do we wipe them out and start all over with you?

[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, Moses would intercede and say, oh, Lord, you don't want to do that because all the nations who say, look at God does it with people.

[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to be one of his people.

[SPEAKER_00]: We kill you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And so we don't want to do that.

[SPEAKER_00]: And then the next chapter, Moses would say, God, that's it, kill him.

[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I said, I had it with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's the chapter.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is like one of those chapters where Moses,

[SPEAKER_00]: as the leader had absolutely had it.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I cannot understand being the leader of hundreds of thousands of people and you're the one that everybody's looking to.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're the one that God's speaking to to tell everybody what to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: Ha ha, give you a badge of that.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so in chapter 20, verse one, then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation into the desert of Zen

[SPEAKER_00]: And the people abode and k-dish in Miram died there, and we have things we could talk about there, but we won't.

[SPEAKER_00]: And she was buried there.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there was no water for the congregation.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is not the first time, is it?

[SPEAKER_00]: That we know in the life of Israel and the wilderness wanderings, the Dave Run at a water.

[SPEAKER_00]: and they had the mana and they get tired of the mana and they weren't flash on that, you know the stories.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, here's another one of those occasions where they're saying, we're thirsty, the whole congregation and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you could almost see them walking up like this.

[SPEAKER_00]: You sure where we're going?

[SPEAKER_00]: When do you think you could guide us where there might be some like water for us all to drink?

[SPEAKER_00]: If you maybe got that way 20 miles, maybe there would have been a little stream a little bit of a little brush where we could actually got something to drink.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thirsty.

[SPEAKER_00]: You ever been really thirsty?

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of thirsty now I'm talking.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm kind of thirsty and I might get a drink here in a little bit, but honestly, I'm at thirsty.

[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not dehydrating.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're been dehydrated and you begin to cramp up.

[SPEAKER_00]: Your body literally begins to cramp and you're not feeling good and what are you doing every day?

[SPEAKER_00]: You're not getting in your car.

[SPEAKER_00]: Not wilderness, you're walking and then you walk some more for 40 years walking in circles.

[SPEAKER_00]: And these people will finally come to place where they had it.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is one of those times it appears that God is sympathetic to them who are going to see in a moment what God says.

[SPEAKER_00]: to Moses and what he is supposed to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it wasn't long before this guy had come to Moses and said, listen, you know, we got to get these people to some water and there's a rock here and I want you to take your rod and want you to smite the rock and water is going to flow out of that rock.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the people are going to drink, the animals are going to drink, everybody's going to be happy until the next time they're thirsty.

[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, give us this day or day our daily bread is something hard for us to understand.

[SPEAKER_00]: These people were walking by faith, trusting God for everything that they had every day.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, no water.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, the people chowed with Moses, murmuring with him and spoke,

[SPEAKER_00]: Why have you brought up the congregation Lord into this wilderness that we and our cattle should die there?

[SPEAKER_00]: Wherefore have you made us to come up out of Egypt to bring us into into this evil place?

[SPEAKER_00]: It is no place to see.

[SPEAKER_00]: We can't grow anything.

[SPEAKER_00]: We're moving.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's no figs or no vines or no pomegranates.

[SPEAKER_00]: Neither is there any water to drink, we're dying in here.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Moses and Aaron went before the presence of the assembly of Thor, the Tyroneck, with the congregation, and day that his Moses and Aaron fell upon their faces and the glory of the Lord appeared unto them.

[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, to experience that one time.

[SPEAKER_00]: Can you imagine being there and God's presence if you will light,

[SPEAKER_00]: his spirit, the working, and the voice from God begins to give them direction of what they're supposed to do with the people for seven.

[SPEAKER_00]: Lorsfolk unto Moses saying, take the rod, gather the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak unto the rock before their eyes, and shall give forth his

[SPEAKER_00]: and thou shalt bring forth them water out of the rock so thou shalt give the congregation and their beast drink pause.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the instruction is very clear, God did not say, review, God did not say, take it out on them.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want you to send lightning down and hit the people.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is not a time to bring fury.

[SPEAKER_00]: get through a hard time in her life.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the clearness of the speaking to the rock, Moses knew what he was supposed to do.

[SPEAKER_00]: He can't say, oh, I didn't hear that part, God, I didn't hear that one.

[SPEAKER_00]: You knew exactly what you were supposed to do, and I want you to see this.

[SPEAKER_00]: So verse 7, I'm sorry, verse 10, verse 10,

[SPEAKER_00]: take the rod, gather out the assembly together, everybody, I'm sorry, verse 9, Moses took the rod from before the Lord as he commanded him.

[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of debate with commentaries, which is a really, really valid point.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to teach, this is kind of one of those little nuggets that it seems to be, it previous chapter, Aaron's rod was then taken and stored.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if you haven't decided this out, we have a stick that buds and brings almonds.

[SPEAKER_00]: Life coming from that which is dead, it's a picture of the resurrection.

[SPEAKER_00]: So now we have this bodied rod that many believe is the one that he took.

[SPEAKER_00]: So the death and the resurrection are all pictured.

[SPEAKER_00]: The gospel is done.

[SPEAKER_00]: And now he takes that very rod.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he takes the stone, which is a picture of Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: And instead of speaking, he then takes that rod and smite that rock with the rod, this butted, and God said, you'd just blew the testimony, man.

[SPEAKER_00]: You'd just blew the typology.

[SPEAKER_00]: First Corinthians 10 says that rock, which followed them, that rock was

[SPEAKER_00]: The picture of Christ, Christ is our rock.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's the rock for Israel.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is the foundation stone.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it was the one who gives life.

[SPEAKER_00]: He had to die one time.

[SPEAKER_00]: He was smoked one time.

[SPEAKER_00]: Once for all, not a continuation death, but a one time for all.

[SPEAKER_00]: And he Moses smoked the rock, taking away the beautiful typology that Hebrews clearly has taught us as we've talked about that on Sunday nights.

[SPEAKER_00]: up because of his anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we'll read it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Moses' first hand gathered, the congregation gathered before the rock, and he said unto them, here you now, you revels, must we fetch you water out of this rock, question to them, and Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod, he smoke the rock twice.

[SPEAKER_00]: The water came out abundantly, and the congregation

[SPEAKER_00]: Something for you and I to learn.

[SPEAKER_00]: A little bit of a marriage was talking about what are we, his Christians were nothing but sinners say of the grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: And does it not amaze you as a Christian?

[SPEAKER_00]: You know you, the God uses you and spite of you.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever stop being amazed at that, you're missing grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: God still gave water.

[SPEAKER_00]: It does still bless Israel through a disobedient leader at that moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, guess who didn't get to go into the promised land?

[SPEAKER_00]: Moses, guess why he didn't get to go in.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a biggie.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a little thing.

[SPEAKER_00]: Anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: taking over him in this wrath, this vengeance, this yelling at the people, this rebellion, commenting on how rebellious they are, he couldn't see himself.

[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't see what he was becoming at this moment.

[SPEAKER_00]: angry people, look at the circumstances.

[SPEAKER_00]: It happens to them and then they lash out.

[SPEAKER_00]: Not even caring what the circumstances or the outcome is going to be because their emotion has taken over and they have to drive their point.

[SPEAKER_00]: You need your reverse 12 with me.

[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord spoke unto Moses and Aaron.

[SPEAKER_00]: I want you, if you've never highlighted this next phrase, you need to, because you believed me not.

[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't say just because you were angry, not just because you hit the rock the second time.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's saying you didn't believe me.

[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't believe me to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel.

[SPEAKER_00]: You could have been an incredible witness for me right here to show mercy to these people, to show grace to these people.

[SPEAKER_00]: You could have given them that water from the rock and you could have said, look how God has provided for you folks.

[SPEAKER_00]: Don't go after the other idols.

[SPEAKER_00]: No idols going to give you water out of a rock.

[SPEAKER_00]: This is the true one living God.

[SPEAKER_00]: This was His opportunity to praise and to worship God.

[SPEAKER_00]: And to magnify God's name, it was a time for him to show the glory of God and the power of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: But instead, he took it as a stage for himself and put God to the side.

[SPEAKER_00]: And God says, you didn't believe me.

[SPEAKER_00]: If you couple that with Hebrews chapter 3 and 4, why did they Israel not to go in, get the chance to go into the Promised Land?

Hebrews 3 · chapter mention

[SPEAKER_00]: because of the sin of unbelief, and guess who didn't get to go in also because of their sin of unbelief.

[SPEAKER_00]: His wrath, his anger, overtook him, and because of this, he messed the plan of God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Moses then acted upon himself, and it's so he sanctified himself.

[SPEAKER_00]: He put himself up on the stage instead of God, and the answer is, because of his angry anger, he lost it.

[SPEAKER_00]: Folks, I want us as a church to be a good testimony that you would be as good testimony for our church, absolutely.

[SPEAKER_00]: For your family, absolutely.

[SPEAKER_00]: But most importantly for our God.

[SPEAKER_00]: I got to ask you a couple questions, are you an angry person?

[SPEAKER_00]: Are you driven by this?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you find yourself constantly being angry at individuals that are around you over the most little petty things and you almost can't wait for it to happen so you can tell somebody how angry you are?

[SPEAKER_00]: I really think it for some people that it becomes an adrenaline rush because they like the feeling.

[SPEAKER_00]: They like to criticize others.

[SPEAKER_00]: They like to rip other people to shreds.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's all because of your pride making you look good and the other people like they are bad people.

[SPEAKER_00]: And God says, guess what, it is time for you and I to check out our hearts and to see if we have an anger problem.

[SPEAKER_00]: I don't live with you, but you might want to ask your spouse

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think I'm an angry person?

[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think I'm always bad-mouthing and attacking other people because of pride in my heart?

[SPEAKER_00]: And you can tell that I'm angry at a lot of people.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's so, you get an anger problem.

[SPEAKER_00]: Time to get right.

[SPEAKER_00]: How can our church have a revival with anger?

[SPEAKER_00]: You can't have.

[SPEAKER_00]: How can we be, as a church, an effective tool for God to use in this community, to reach people with the gospel of Christ, if there's anger, can't happen, can't happen.

[SPEAKER_00]: So it's time for revival.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's time for you and I to look at our hearts and to say, I've got to evaluate myself.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy to see it in other people, but sometimes we put that blind run when it comes to our own lives.

[SPEAKER_00]: Your preacher to this day will always have to suppress anger.

[SPEAKER_00]: But you can ask my wife, do I my always victorious?

[SPEAKER_00]: No, not always victorious.

[SPEAKER_00]: But I hope that my wife and my children can say that he is not an angry man.

[SPEAKER_00]: My husband is not an angry man.

[SPEAKER_00]: Ask him.

[SPEAKER_00]: Ask your children, do you think I'm angry?

[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, you're always yelling and talking about this for again, and it is a, yeah, be ready because it took an unsafe father to help me realize I have an anger problem.

[SPEAKER_00]: And if there is something in you that that is easily stimulated, that emotion quickly comes to the surface

[SPEAKER_00]: Because it could become your addiction, it could be your drug of choice.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we gotta get in order.

[SPEAKER_00]: We've shared through two texts, the gospel very clearly.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have shown the sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sin.

[SPEAKER_00]: We have shown how Jesus Christ is the rock that provides for us the living water if you will.

[SPEAKER_00]: so that we could have eternal life.

[SPEAKER_00]: There is no other way, my friend, for you to get to heaven than through Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is the way, the truth, and the life.

[SPEAKER_00]: He has provided the way for you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And you say, I found out that I'm like king, I thought it was what I do.

[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was my own righteousness to get me into heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now you can't do it.

[SPEAKER_00]: You can't do it on your own.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: And what he has done alone for you, that will get you into heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we're saved by grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why we love this song, Amazing Grace.

[SPEAKER_00]: that saved a wretch like me.

[SPEAKER_00]: We don't say, I am so glad that I am good enough for God to get me, you know, for me to go to heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's not what I have done for him.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's great.

[SPEAKER_00]: It's God giving to us not what we have done for God.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's pray Father, we love you.

[SPEAKER_00]: Your word is profound.

[SPEAKER_00]: It is an amazing thing that shows us ourselves.

[SPEAKER_00]: That's why you tell us that the word

[SPEAKER_00]: It pierces our very being and you even know the thoughts and the intents of our hearts.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Lord, work in our hearts this day.

[SPEAKER_00]: This brief invitation time, Lord, it is your time to work inside of us.

[SPEAKER_00]: Lord, if there are some here that do not know Christ as their Savior, Lord, that today would be the day of salvation for them, that they will trust Christ and Christ alone.

[SPEAKER_00]: He is the one true living God that is able to save because He came to this earth, and He shed His blood, He rose again from the dead, and Lord we pray that men, women, children would draw unto you this day.

[SPEAKER_00]: Lord, work on our hearts as long as you can, Lord, this is your invitation and Jesus name we pray.

[SPEAKER_00]: Amen.

[SPEAKER_00]: Let's stand together.

[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that great?

[SPEAKER_00]: And so, Stan had a chance to lead him in the Lord, and he encouraged him, and he said, you know, it's so important for us as Christians to make it public, and we can do it through baptism, and that's a good thing also, it's a wonderful public profession, showing others what we believe in, but this is also a good thing here, what we're saying.

[SPEAKER_00]: Just to publicly let this young man let you know that he has trusted Christ, his Savior,

[SPEAKER_00]: sure is, God tells us that if we confess Him before man, He, God, the Jesus will confess you before my father and heaven.

[SPEAKER_00]: And there's a confession that's going on here, and God says, thank you.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I encourage Him with the verse, I am not ashamed.

[SPEAKER_00]: of a gospel of Christ.

[SPEAKER_00]: And it's also a young man for us to be praying for.

[SPEAKER_00]: Trust that the Lord is going to use him and grow him up.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we're thankful for him, the whole family, the Lord brought him our way.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to pray for him.

[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Father, we thank you for Nick and his profession this day.

[SPEAKER_00]: And we do pray that you'll help him to grow as we surround him.

[SPEAKER_00]: And show our love for him and just remember the day when we trust that you would save your, we rejoice with him and Lord, we know Satan is going to take this well.

[SPEAKER_00]: And the attack will always come.

[SPEAKER_00]: So surround him, Lord, keep the heads about him and his family.

[SPEAKER_00]: I pray that you will bless him for this decision to make his faith and you public.

[SPEAKER_00]: And I pray that you will continue to meet the spiritual needs that he has.
