  1. This morning

  2. we noted last Sunday we began a series

  3. entitled Shadows to Substance.

  4. And we considered from that lesson, as

  5. we will see throughout this series,

  6. is that one of the most beautiful

  7. aspects of the word of God is the way

  8. the Old Testament prepares us for the

  9. New Testament.

  10. Paul reminded us and we noticed this in

  11. our our introductory I guess you would

  12. say an overview of what I presented last

  13. Sunday morning to start this series.

  14. It's Romans chapter 15 and verse4 that

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  15. says for whatever things were written

  16. before were written for our learning

  17. that we through the patience and comfort

  18. of the scriptures might have hope.

  19. And many of those things that were

  20. written before time or before are what

  21. we would also note throughout this

  22. series of types and shadows.

  23. And these types and shadows that we're

  24. talking about are images,

  25. symbols, and events in the Old Testament

  26. even that foreshadow the greater reality

  27. that's fulfilled in Christ. Another

  28. verse that we started out with last

  29. Sunday morning is from Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  30. chapter 2 16-1 17 where Paul was telling

  31. the Colossay brethren about let no one

  32. judgement food or a drink or regarding a

  33. festival or new moon or Sabbaths which

  34. are a shadow of things to come but the

  35. substance is of Christ.

  36. So this morning, we're we're going to

  37. continue in this study of the shadow and

  38. substance of God's plan for dealing with

  39. sin. And I believe as we see as even as

  40. the the Old Testament has been referred

  41. to as being a school master or as a

  42. tutor that leads us to Christ, we see

  43. how important it is

  44. to have this understanding of God's plan

  45. for dealing with sin. as we consider a

  46. type and shadow found in the Old

  47. Testament from the very beginning

  48. account of Genesis and which we'll

  49. consider this morning as Adam being that

  50. type and shadow of Christ.

  51. A type and shadow of Christ.

  52. Now, brethren, this account is is yet

  53. another again type and shadow of the

  54. remarkable things about the Bible as it

  55. shows. It's it's consistent ties

  56. together from beginning to end. And I

  57. stated before that the Old Testament is

  58. not it's not a collection of stories. A

  59. lot of people say, "Well, it's just

  60. collection of stories." No, there are

  61. accounts. It's God's way of preparing us

  62. for Christ.

  63. And right here in the beginning of

  64. Genesis and throughout Malachi,

  65. God was painting pictures. He was giving

  66. us spiritual previews, if you will, of

  67. what he would accomplish through his

  68. son.

  69. And this earliest and I believe clearest

  70. of those pictures is Adam, the first

  71. man. Now, in Romans chapter 5, what our

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  72. scripture reading this morning that

  73. brother Robert Wooten read as we read

  74. along there, it talks about in verse 14

  75. this again, notice this. It says,

  76. "Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam

  77. to Moses, even those who had not sinned

  78. according to the likeness of the

  79. transgression of Adam, who is a type,"

  80. y'all see this part, "who is a type of

  81. him." That's talking about Jesus who was

  82. to come.

  83. That means Adam's life, his position,

  84. and his actions all point forward to

  85. Jesus Christ. Not in equality,

  86. but in contrast and completion.

  87. So this morning we're going to explore

  88. this theme as Adam as a type of Jesus

  89. Christ. Again, Adam who is a type of him

  90. who was to come. as we'll see how

  91. through Adam came death

  92. and through Christ came life.

  93. Through Adam came condemnation

  94. and through Christ came justification.

  95. And that text I believe is we find

  96. throughout this lesson is really how

  97. amazed again we should always be at the

  98. unity of God's word.

  99. how even from the dawn of creation,

  100. God's plan of redemption was already in

  101. motion. Romans 5 12-14 as we read

  102. in our scripture reading that talks

  103. about just as through one man sin

  104. entered the world and death through sin

  105. and thus death spread to all men because

  106. all sinned. For until the law, sin was

  107. in the world. But sin is not imputed

  108. when there is no law. Nevertheless,

  109. death reigned from Adam. Most even those

  110. who had not sinned according to the

  111. likeness of the transgression of Adam,

  112. who was a type of him who was to come.

  113. What I want us to notice in in this

  114. first part is that Adam and Christ is

  115. what we call the head of two races. And

  116. you say, well, what in the world does

  117. that mean? Well, bear with me, okay?

  118. Because I have a lot that I'm I'm trying

  119. to impart here this morning.

  120. Adam is noted here in this passage as

  121. standing

  122. as the head of the human race. That's

  123. that's the very thought we get is being

  124. considered as as a father of mankind if

  125. you will. But Christ, what he's saying

  126. stands as the head of a new race. We

  127. might say uh we we sometimes use the

  128. word again a new nation of a sort or a

  129. new kingdom. We might use words like

  130. that. But the thought is it's a

  131. spiritual family born not of flesh but

  132. of faith. And I say that because of what

  133. we find even in John chapter 1. Remember

    John 1 chapter mention

  134. we we we there's a lot that's in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  135. chapter 1 about speaking of Jesus who

  136. came as the word right of the light.

  137. John chapter 1 12 and 13 tells us that

    John 1 chapter mention

  138. but as many as received him talking

  139. about Jesus to them he gave the right to

  140. become children of God to those who

  141. believe in his name who were born not of

  142. blood nor of the will of the flesh nor

  143. of the will of man but of God. See, that

  144. tells it right there. We're talking

  145. about the difference between physical

  146. and spiritual, even that even as Adam

  147. has been referred to throughout the

  148. scriptures as being the head of

  149. basically the old creation

  150. and then you have Christ who is the head

  151. of the new creation. See, those kinds of

  152. words are are used throughout the Bible,

  153. especially when you look at 2

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  154. Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 17. What

  155. do you see there?

  156. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is

  157. what? He's a new creation. Old things

  158. have passed away. Behold, all things

  159. have become new.

  160. And so, we see this contrast that's

  161. being made here. Even

  162. that Adam,

  163. that sin, that first sin, if you will,

  164. Eve, of course, she took of the fruit of

  165. the tree of knowledge. It was in the

  166. midst of the garden that she was told

  167. not to partake of. Adam knew this as

  168. well. She took of that fruit and then

  169. what did she do? She gave it to Adam.

  170. Adam fortook of it. That's Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  171. chapter 3 referring back to that from

  172. last Sunday.

  173. That by that Adam brought a curse upon

  174. all his descendants.

  175. What's the flip side?

  176. What do we see? This Christ brought

  177. blessing to all who come to him.

  178. The moment Adam sinned, the human story

  179. changed.

  180. You remember what I I I mentioned last

  181. Sunday is that sin always changes one's

  182. location.

  183. Always changes one's location. It

  184. changed Adam and Eve's location, didn't

  185. it? Because they got kicked out of the

  186. Garden of Eden.

  187. That came separation. See, that's the

  188. idea. We see death and separation from

  189. God entered the picture.

  190. But when Christ came, he opened the way

  191. for a new story.

  192. One that shows reconciliation,

  193. forgiveness,

  194. redemption. Those are the words you see

  195. tied there.

  196. As the scriptures make abundantly clear,

  197. with the first man, Adam,

  198. we inherited mortality

  199. and we inherited a sinful world.

  200. But only those who are born again

  201. through the gospel or in Christ wherein

  202. mortality puts on immortality.

  203. Which leads me to 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  204. 15. Again, there's a line in 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  205. Corinthians chapter 15 that I won't be

  206. able to get to everything, but again,

  207. this stimulates our thoughts and what

  208. we're talking about. First Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  209. chapter 15, look at verses 21 and 22.

  210. [clears throat]

  211. Prove all things according to God's.

  212. We're not DJs. Here we go. For since by

  213. man came death, by man also came the

  214. resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam

  215. all die, even so in Christ all shall be

  216. made alive.

  217. What does that tell us? When we look at

  218. Adam and Christ,

  219. we see the first Adam brought death. The

  220. second Adam brings life.

  221. So when Adam disobeyed, the penalty of

  222. sin was death.

  223. We know that Romans 6 verse 23. What

    Romans 6:23

  224. does it say? For the wages of sin is

  225. what? Death.

  226. That's not just physical also, but also

  227. spiritual. talk about that separation

  228. from God again. And when Christ obeyed,

  229. the reward of righteousness was life,

  230. both spiritual and eternal. That's what

  231. those passages are telling us. Now, I've

  232. created some charts, and it's funny.

  233. I printed charts out, but I don't think

  234. I put them back there. I think they're

  235. still in my bag.

  236. After services, you can get a copy of

  237. these charts, okay? because you probably

  238. going to be able to see them. You might

  239. be able to.

  240. I knew I was forgetting something. But

  241. we talk about Adam's sin and and Christ

  242. obedience. And and there's a there's a

  243. outline here for us basically to look at

  244. when you go through the scriptures. And

  245. and one of the charts I'll give you

  246. later on has all the scriptural

  247. references of what we're talking about

  248. this this morning.

  249. Adam, the first man when you talk about

  250. the type and shadow and then Christ on

  251. on the right side there column is the

  252. second man which is the anti-ype or the

  253. substance that we've been talking about

  254. in this series. Well, Adam sin, what did

  255. it do? It brought decay, death. Christ

  256. obedience brought restoration.

  257. The first Adam ate from a forbidden tree

  258. and brought death. The second Adam died

  259. on a cursed tree and brought life. The

  260. first Adam was conquered by temptation.

  261. The second Adam conquered temptation.

  262. The first Adam was expelled from

  263. paradise. The second Adam opened

  264. paradise

  265. again. And really when you go to the

  266. scriptures, it it it shows us this

  267. imagery in the very beginning of Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  268. chapter 3 that that sin it's like a

  269. disease. It's it's introduced by one

  270. person that that spreads to all. Right.

  271. Sometimes that's the way it feels like

  272. in a house. You got one sick kid and

  273. they sneeze on you. What happens? Well,

  274. you got it. And then you sneeze on

  275. somebody and they got it. We all know

  276. how that is, right? We know how that is

  277. because that's patient zero, as we might

  278. call them. Okay, that's patient zero.

  279. Well, this is the imagery that we get.

  280. Adam is that one that brought sin, death

  281. into the world.

  282. Christ is the cure,

  283. the antidote that heals every person who

  284. comes to him. Look at this big picture

  285. here. Even in Revelation talks about

  286. this about, you know, uh no more sorrow,

  287. no more tears. What does all this lead

  288. us to? Understand this that every

  289. funeral, every tear, every broken heart

  290. is the shadow of Adam's fault. That's

  291. exactly what it is.

  292. But every baptism in every restored

  293. sinner, every resurrection promise is

  294. the light of Christ's victory. That is

  295. the beauty of the scriptures that

  296. unfolds from beginning to end.

  297. And if we're not careful,

  298. we'll miss it.

  299. These are the types and shadows that are

  300. so abundantly clear right in front of

  301. us.

  302. the first man.

  303. Go to 1 Corinthians chapter 15 47-49.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  304. Now

  305. the first man was of the earth

  306. made of dust. The second man is Lord is

  307. the Lord from heaven. As was the man of

  308. dust, so also are those who are made of

  309. dust. And as is the heavenly man, so

  310. also are those who are heavenly. And as

  311. we have borne the image of the man of

  312. dust, we shall also bear the image of

  313. the heavenly man.

  314. What's he saying? You got Adam, you got

  315. Christ. First man, second. What's he

  316. saying in that passage? The first Adam

  317. was of earth. The second Adam is from

  318. heaven. Now,

  319. as we know from the creation, Adam was

  320. formed from the dust of the ground.

  321. And the Lord breathed him the breath of

  322. life.

  323. He gave him physical life. Christ came

  324. down from heaven. And what did Christ

  325. give us? Spiritual life. Y'all see that?

  326. So Adam's nature was earthly.

  327. He was a subject to weakness and hunger

  328. and temptation and mortality. Christ's

  329. nature though was divine. He came from

  330. heaven, lived perfectly, and conquered

  331. death.

  332. What did Adam give us? He gave us the

  333. image of dust.

  334. We are frail and we are temporary.

  335. That's exactly what we are. But yet

  336. Christ gives us the image of heaven,

  337. eternal and glorious. That's exactly

  338. what you see in verses 47 through 49,

  339. don't you?

  340. Sometimes there's there's a lot of words

  341. that that are spoken. And I I love the

  342. the descriptions that are given. Uh

  343. sometimes we we are talked about as as

  344. tents. Uh that these are just our our

  345. tents that we have that we're living in.

  346. It's our physical bodies. Peter makes

  347. mention of that as well as as Paul.

  348. And sometimes we're referred to as as

  349. vessels.

  350. uh you might you might consider might

  351. think of in the way of if you've ever

  352. handled uh fine pottery. Okay. What you

  353. understand about handling that fine

  354. pottery is that it's fragile. It's

  355. fragile.

  356. That's really us because we're made of

  357. clay

  358. and we are easily broken.

  359. But in Christ, the potter takes that

  360. fragile vessel and and fills it with

  361. what? Heavenly treasure. I know this

  362. because the scripture says in 2

  363. Corinthians 4 and:e 7 he says but we

  364. have this treasure in earthn vessels.

  365. What's the earth and vessels? That is

  366. our physical body. Earth and vessels

  367. that the excellence of the power may be

  368. of God and not of us. The treasure that

  369. we have is what Christ came to give us.

  370. That's the treasure.

  371. So yeah, physically we we bear the very

  372. image of Adam, okay, the first man.

  373. But what the scriptures teaches us as we

  374. go to the New Testament and see what is

  375. God's plan in dealing with sin and the

  376. whole redemption process, all of this,

  377. what what spiritually we are called to

  378. be transformed to Christ's image. Look

  379. at Romans 8 29.

  380. What's it say? For whom he forneew, he

  381. also predestined be conformed to the

  382. image of his son that he might be the

  383. firstborn among many brethren.

  384. See, Christ was was reflecting that,

  385. right? Thinking about the Lord God

  386. himself. And look at Romans 12:es 1 and

  387. 2. This says it all right here. I

  388. believe when Paul said, "I beseech you

  389. therefore, brethren, by the mercies of

  390. God that you present your bodies a

  391. living sacrifice, holy God, which is a

  392. reasonable service. And do not be

  393. conformed to the world, to this world,

  394. but be transformed by the renewing of

  395. your mind, that you may prove what is

  396. that good and acceptable, the perfect

  397. will of God."

  398. The question that we ask

  399. is which image are we shaping our life

  400. after today?

  401. Which image?

  402. Go to Romans chapter 5. Now look at

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  403. verses 18 and 19.

  404. I told you there's a lot to this. Romans

  405. 5 18 and 19.

  406. It says, "Therefore, as through one

  407. man's offense, judgment came to all men,

  408. resulting in condemnation, even so

  409. through one man's righteous act, the

  410. free gift came to all men, resulting in

  411. justification of life.

  412. For as by one man's disobedience, many

  413. were made sinners,

  414. so also by one man's obedience, many

  415. will be made righteous."

  416. So here we have the first Adam's

  417. disobedience that condemned many. The

  418. second Adam's obedience justified many

  419. as the very thought. Adam's single act

  420. of rebellion in the garden brought death

  421. into the world. But yet Christ's act of

  422. obedience on the cross brought life to

  423. the world. And obviously there's many

  424. passages that speak of Jesus in such a

  425. way. And one of those is Hebrews 5 8 and

  426. 9 that says though he was that though he

  427. was a son yet he learned obedience by

  428. the things which he suffered and having

  429. been perfected he became the author of

  430. eternal salvation to all who obey him.

  431. Jesus was obedient to his father's will.

  432. Adam's single act, his choice affected

  433. all of humanity. And Christ,

  434. his choices to live, to do the father's

  435. will and his own sacrifice offers

  436. redemption to all of humanity.

  437. So again, through Adam came condemnation

  438. and through Christ came justification.

  439. Here you have again

  440. sin spreading because people followed

  441. Adam's path. But yet grace spreads

  442. because people follow Christ.

  443. And what Paul makes abundantly

  444. grace abounded much more so that as sin

  445. reigned in death, even so grace might

  446. reign through righteousness to eternal

  447. life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  448. That's a lot of stuff I'm giving, ain't

  449. it? That's a lot. Well, I'm trying to

  450. make this a two-part series, so I'm

  451. going to keep going.

  452. Genesis chapter 2. Let's go back.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  453. Genesis chapter 2:es 21-23.

  454. This is reminding us of what's mentioned

  455. earlier. Here's the reference here.

  456. Genesis chapter 2 21-23

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  457. talking about Adam being created by the

  458. Lord God. It said, "Lord God caused a

  459. deep sleep to fall on Adam and he slept

  460. and he took one of his ribs and closed

  461. up the flesh in its place. Then the rib

  462. which the Lord God had taken from man he

  463. made into a woman and he brought her to

  464. the man and Adam said, "This is now bone

  465. of my bones and flesh of my flesh she

  466. shall be called woman because she was

  467. taken out of man."

  468. you know, you get to thinking about this

  469. and the types and shadows and some of

  470. the things that sometimes say, well,

  471. maybe I might be looking a little bit

  472. too deep into it. I don't know. But but

  473. I I thought about this and and it's

  474. interesting when you look at Adam and

  475. Christ even that Eve was taken from

  476. Adam's side.

  477. The church came from Christ's side. You

  478. ever thought about it in that kind of

  479. way?

  480. Adam obviously put him into a deep sleep

  481. and and and God opened his side, took a

  482. rib to form Eve. That was his bride. And

  483. as he stated, bone of his bones, the

  484. flesh of his flesh. When you think about

  485. Jesus that when he was hanging up on

  486. that cross, his side was what? It was

  487. pierced. And from that wound came blood

  488. and water. John 19:34 actually records

    John 19:34

  489. that, doesn't it? One of the soldiers

  490. pierced his side with a spear and merely

  491. blood and water came out.

  492. Do you know what blood and water

  493. represents? Now, that's a whole another

  494. study. That might be another series for

  495. another time. But blood and water is

  496. very significant throughout the Bible

  497. because blood and water has always been

  498. a symbol of salvation and baptism. Did

  499. y'all know that?

  500. That's throughout the scriptures. And

  501. we'll get into more of that maybe later.

  502. So, think about the church. You think

  503. about the bride of Christ that was born.

  504. The shadow that we're talking about with

  505. Adam, the bride from from the side of

  506. the sleeping Adam was Eve. That was his

  507. bride. The substance though of what we

  508. see in the New Testament is the church

  509. came from the side of the crucified

  510. Christ. Even Acts 20 and 28 makes that

  511. abundantly clear. Look at Acts 20 and

  512. verse 28.

  513. Acts 20 and verse 28. I don't have it on

  514. the charts here. Acts 20 and verse 28.

  515. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to

  516. all the flock among which the Holy

  517. Spirit has made you overseers to the to

  518. shepherd the church of God which he

  519. purchased with his own what? Blood. Acts

  520. 20 28.

  521. Out of Adam's sleep came his companion.

  522. Out of Christ's death came his people.

  523. God was showing from the very beginning

  524. that life and relationship come through

  525. sacrifice.

  526. That just as as Eve belonged only to

  527. Adam, the church belongs only to Christ.

  528. He is the head and we are his body. And

  529. there are numerous scriptures on this

  530. one. Ephesians 1:es 22 and 23. And he

  531. put all things under his feet and gave

  532. him to be head over all things to the

  533. church which is his body the fullness of

  534. him who fills all in all.

  535. There it is. This is the very church

  536. that Jesus said in Matthew 16:18 upon

    Matthew 16:18

  537. this rock I'll build my church and the

  538. gates of hell shall not prevail against

  539. it. That's Matthew 16:18.

    Matthew 16:18

  540. And and the church will be referred to

  541. yet again later on in the book of

  542. Ephesians in chapter 5. And look at

  543. verses 25 through32. Read that. Look at

  544. this. Ephesians 5:25-32.

    Ephesians 5:25–32

  545. Husbands, love your wives just as Christ

  546. also loved the church and gave himself

  547. for her, that he might sanctify and

  548. cleanse her with a washing of water by

  549. the word. that he might present her to

  550. himself a glorious church, not having

  551. spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but

  552. that she should be holy and without

  553. blemish. So husbands ought to love their

  554. own wives as their own bodies. He who

  555. loves his wife loves himself. For no one

  556. ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes

  557. and cherishes it just as the Lord does

  558. the church. For we are members of his

  559. body, of his flesh and of his bones. Oh,

  560. did y'all see that? That sounds

  561. familiar, doesn't it?

  562. Verse 31. For this reason, a man shall

  563. leave his father and mother shall be

  564. joined to his wife, and the two shall

  565. become one flesh. This is a great

  566. mystery, but I speak concerning Christ

  567. and the church.

  568. Maybe I'm not thinking too deep into

  569. this, am I?

  570. Maybe this is exactly what we're seeing.

  571. The shadow and the substance. There is

  572. no other savior, no other husband. There

  573. is no other arc of safety.

  574. I believe that's clear. The shadow and

  575. the substance.

  576. Let's go to another passage. Genesis 3

  577. and 21. We we talked about this one uh

  578. briefly last Sunday morning.

  579. a after they had sinned, of course, Adam

  580. and Eve, they they made some some fig

  581. leaves, right, to cover themselves

  582. because they realized that they were

  583. naked. And and after their

  584. confrontation, I guess you would say,

  585. with with God, God asked a question. And

  586. of course, all of this started, you

  587. know, coming out here. Okay. Well, this

  588. is what we did. Well, also for Adam and

  589. his wife, the Lord God made tunics of

  590. skin and clothed them. I thought that

  591. was interesting. and and and I and I was

  592. kind of thinking about,

  593. you know, how how God again

  594. the covering in Eden and the covering in

  595. Christ of what we see. And we we talked

  596. about the innocent slain to cover the

  597. guilty, right? Because that's that's

  598. what it costs. It costs an animal,

  599. right? To cover.

  600. There was always sacrifices throughout

  601. the scriptures as we mentioned even on

  602. uh Sunday morning last week. But even

  603. think about this. We talk about covering

  604. or being clothed in righteousness. Those

  605. are the kind of words that are used

  606. throughout the Bible. And in Romans

    Romans 13:14

  607. 13:14, it says that we are to put on the

  608. Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision

  609. for the flesh to fill its lust. And and

  610. what I believe is is is as we saw with

  611. Adam and Eve and talking about the the

  612. the covering that when they realized

  613. their shame and tried to cover

  614. themselves with those fig leaves, they

  615. realized that it was inadequate and God

  616. himself provided those garments of skin.

  617. The first shedding of blood to cover

  618. sin. And yet the shadow, what was that?

  619. The innocent slain for to cover the

  620. guilty. And the substance was what? It

  621. was Jesus, the innocent lamb slain to

  622. cover our sin forever. John 1 verse 29,

    John 1:29

  623. behold the lamb of God who takes away

  624. the sin of the world.

  625. You see, if you if you spill ink on a

  626. white shirt, I've done that numerous

  627. times. You can try to hide it under

  628. another layer, but you know what still

  629. remains?

  630. The stain.

  631. Only proper cleansing can remove it. And

  632. man tries to cover sin his own way, but

  633. only Christ's blood can cleanse it

  634. completely. And that's what we see

  635. throughout the scriptures in the New

  636. Testament. Galatians 3:26 and 27 even

    Galatians 3:26

  637. makes this abundantly clear as well. For

  638. you are all sons of God through faith in

  639. Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were

  640. baptized into Christ, what'd you do? You

  641. put on Christ. You put on Christ,

  642. clothed in righteousness, right?

  643. God no longer sees such sin. He sees the

  644. righteousness of his son that covers.

  645. You know, as we were I'm going to go

  646. back to Romans chapter 5 for just a

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  647. moment

  648. and and I want us to think about this

  649. verse 2021 because this is we talk about

  650. how does all this work. Well, it has to

  651. do with that word grace that we

  652. mentioned earlier and and what's

  653. mentioned in verse 20 and 21

  654. that though Adam's sin introduced death,

  655. God's grace through Christ introduced

  656. eternal life. The shadow of Adam's fall

  657. stretches across human history. But the

  658. light of Christ

  659. resurrection outshines it all.

  660. Now, if you've ever stood outside at

  661. sunset, you know how long your shadow

  662. can stretch.

  663. But once the sun rises high in the sky,

  664. what happens to the shadow? It

  665. disappears.

  666. And that's the imagery I think we get

  667. from the scriptures here is the cross

  668. and the empty tomb are the rising sun,

  669. the son of righteousness. That's in

  670. Malachi. See, there's so much in these

  671. scriptures. And that rising sun of

  672. righteousness dispels Adam's shadow

  673. forever.

  674. No matter how far sin has spread, God's

  675. grace reaches further. No matter how

  676. dark the shadow, the light of Christ is

  677. brighter still. Friends, I want to keep

  678. in mind though when I talk about grace.

  679. I always want to make mention from

  680. Romans chapter 6 that we don't forget

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  681. this part.

  682. Romans chapter 6 because that is not a

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  683. license to sin. It's not the triumph of

  684. grace

  685. over sin is that we live differently.

  686. We live for the one who died for us. And

  687. that's what Romans 6 goes into detail

  688. about. And I just want to share with you

  689. verses 1-6 as we start bringing the

  690. lesson to a close. Romans 6:es 1-6. Look

  691. at that.

  692. Romans 6 1-6.

  693. What shall we say then?

  694. Shall we continue in sin that grace may

  695. abound? Certainly not. How shall we who

  696. died to sin live any longer in it? Or do

  697. you not know that as many of us as were

  698. baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized

  699. into his death? Therefore, we were

  700. buried with him through baptism into

  701. death, that just as Christ was raised

  702. from the dead by the glory of the

  703. father, even so we also should walk in

  704. newness of life. For if we have been

  705. united together in the likeness of his

  706. death, certainly we all shall shall be

  707. in the likeness of his resurrection.

  708. Knowing this, that our old man was

  709. crucified with him, that the body of sin

  710. might be done away with, that we should

  711. no longer be slaves of sin.

  712. Grace is not a license to sin. And I

  713. think Romans 6 continues to talk about

  714. that from what we've been studying in

  715. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  716. how thankful we should be for the grace

  717. that has been offered and extended to

  718. us, but don't take it for granted.

  719. Don't use it and abuse it as so many

  720. have certainly done. We want to be so

  721. careful with what we're doing with the

  722. word of God. So, as a concluding

  723. thoughts, as I mentioned these charts,

  724. I'll have those um for you following uh

  725. the service this morning. But all of

  726. this of what we talked about goes into

  727. again the scripture references. We have

  728. looked at the origin about Adam the

  729. first man, the type and the shadow and

  730. Christ the second man the anti-ype and

  731. the substance. And of course again the

  732. scripture reference for all of these.

  733. Adam formed from the dust of the ground.

  734. Yet Christ came from heaven eternal son

  735. of God. The first man, the first Adam,

  736. head of the old creation. The last Adam

  737. head of the new creation. The nature of

  738. Adam. The first man was earthly,

  739. natural, corruptible. And yet Christ,

  740. the second man, the substance is

  741. heavenly, spiritual, incorruptible.

  742. The relationship that was with God, with

  743. Adam and the first man, was created in

  744. God's image, but he disobeyed. Yet

  745. Christ, the second man, the antitype,

  746. the substance, was the image of the

  747. invisible God, and he was perfectly

  748. obedient. the temptation. You see that

  749. Adam yielded to Satan in the Garden of

  750. Eden, but yet Jesus, as we know in

  751. Matthew chapter 4, overcame Satan in the

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  752. wilderness as well as in Gethsemane.

  753. The disobedience of the first man

  754. brought forth sin. And the second man,

  755. the antiype, the substance that Christ

  756. is, obedience brought righteousness. The

  757. tree, we mentioned that that he Adam ate

  758. from ate fruit from a forbidden tree

  759. that brought forth death. And the second

  760. man, Christ, died upon a cursed tree and

  761. it brought forth life. The consequence

  762. of such an act, Adam brought

  763. condemnation to all humanity, but yet

  764. Christ brought justification to all who

  765. obey. The effect of the work, well, Adam

  766. introduced sin and death. Christ, he

  767. conquered sin and death. Adam was the

  768. head of the old fallen race. Christ is

  769. the head of the redeemed race. We bear

  770. the image of the man of dust, that is

  771. Adam. But yet Christ, we bear the image

  772. of the heavenly. The relationship to the

  773. bride is Eve was taken from his side in

  774. his sleep. Yet Christ purchased from his

  775. side in death. The covering of sin. God

  776. clothed it with animal skins, the

  777. temporary covering. But yet Christ

  778. closed us with his righteousness,

  779. eternal covering. The result for

  780. humanity? Well, Adam was exiled from

  781. paradise and separation from God. Yet

  782. Christ the second man gave us access and

  783. reconciliation with God. The destiny

  784. Adam ended in death and corruption but

  785. Christ Jesus ends in resurrection and

  786. glory.

  787. And what's the legacy? The legacy as

  788. we've seen from these scriptures briefly

  789. this morning is exactly what 1

  790. Corinthians 15 and verse 22 stated. In

  791. Adam all die,

  792. but in Christ all shall be made alive.

  793. Romans 5:1 17 said, "For if by one man's

    Romans 5:1

  794. offense death reign through the one,

  795. much more those who receive abundance of

  796. grace

  797. and the gift of righteousness will reign

  798. in life through the one Jesus Christ.

  799. Through the first Adam came ruin.

  800. Through the second Adam came that

  801. wonderful redemption.

  802. Friend, as we prepare our hearts and

  803. minds, as we prepare for this invitation

  804. song, a lot that has been mentioned, and

  805. I know it has been a lot that I I I I

  806. gave you this morning in the shadows to

  807. substance in this part two of the

  808. series.

  809. We were born into a world marked by sin

  810. and death.

  811. That it's an Adam.

  812. But I submit to you, as you have seen, I

  813. I believe abundantly clear in just a few

  814. passages I've shared with you already.

  815. You can be born again into Christ, the

  816. second Adam, where there's forgiveness,

  817. there's righteousness, and there's life.

  818. How do you make that change? Well,

  819. that's God's plan of salvation, not DJ's

  820. and not yours. It's God's. And all these

  821. scriptures make it very clear as well.

  822. You believe that Jesus Christ is the son

  823. of living God. Then you act upon that

  824. and you confess him to be the son of

  825. living God. You repent of your sins, for

  826. all have sinned and fallen short of the

  827. glory of God. That includes me. Romans

    Romans 3:23

  828. 3:23 makes that clear. You repent of

  829. your sins. You confess to be the son of

  830. living God. And you're baptized,

  831. immersed, as we saw in Romans chapter

  832. 6:es 3 and 4, buried with him in baptism

  833. to rise and walk in newness of life. Not

  834. only there in Romans 6 and 4, but you

  835. also saw it in Galatians 3 26 and 27.

  836. You are baptized for remission of those

  837. sins, and you come out of the water

  838. grave to walk in newness of life. In

  839. that moment, you died to the old man and

  840. you are buried to rise and walk in his

  841. life. That part of the new creation, the

  842. part of the family of the second Adam,

  843. you can do that this morning.

  844. All things stand ready. If you'd like to

  845. study more, don't leave here without

  846. saying, DJ, I want to talk to you more

  847. about this.

  848. Don't leave here without saying that.

  849. If you're already in Christ, maybe you

  850. have drifted back toward Adam's old

  851. ways. You went back to the shadows.

  852. How thankful we are that you can come

  853. home. The same grace that saved you

  854. still will restore you.

  855. Let us never return to the shadows. Let

  856. us live in the light of Christ who is

  857. the substance of God's eternal plan.

  858. Come out of the shadow of the first man

  859. and walk in the light of the second.

  860. What a beautiful thing we find from the

  861. scriptures as we have seen today. If

  862. you're subject to the invitation call,

  863. whatever your spiritual need is this

  864. morning, won't you come as we stand and

  865. we sing the song that's been selected.
