  1. Well, good morning once again. Again,

  2. it's wonderful that we could be here

  3. this morning. Great to see those that

  4. are back with us that have been out for

  5. a little bit due to to recent injuries

  6. and and sicknesses and such. So, it's

  7. good to good to see you in our number

  8. again this morning. Uh we have our

  9. continued series of Shadows of Substance

  10. continuing this morning. Uh and I would

  11. submit to you again

  12. that as we have noticed throughout this

  13. series and again we will this morning

  14. that God did not reveal

  15. his plan of redemption suddenly or

  16. accidentally.

  17. Rather, the Lord revealed it

  18. progressively through shadows of the Old

  19. Testament and that point to the

  20. substance in the New Testament. We've

  21. used Colossians chapter 2 numerous times

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  22. throughout this series as to where the

  23. title that I put here for this series

  24. talking about those shadow of things to

  25. come. But the substance is of Christ.

  26. And as we have noted from the numerous

  27. shadows we have studied, another one

  28. that is among I would say the clearest

  29. and and again most powerful of these

  30. shadows is that of the life of David.

  31. Now David as we know

  32. is was a shepherd boy who became king.

  33. Now, David's life from the pasture to

  34. the palace was designed by God to point

  35. to a greater shepherd, a greater

  36. conqueror,

  37. a greater king. David was a shadow.

  38. Jesus is a substance. And David's throne

  39. was earthly. Jesus throne is eternal.

  40. David ruled for a generation. Jesus

  41. rules eternal forever and ever. So this

  42. morning we will see the shadow found in

  43. David, his calling, his character, his

  44. battles, his kingdom to reveal the

  45. substance and that is the glory of Jesus

  46. Christ, the son of David

  47. and king of kings. Now

  48. whether we you know sometimes we have to

  49. be reminded of these things as I was in

  50. in putting this lesson together this

  51. morning in my studies that again how

  52. many times we find that Jesus is

  53. referred to again as you think of

  54. Matthew chapter 1 and verse one that's

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  55. one of the places that you'll find in

  56. Matthew 1 and verse one that Jesus is

  57. referred to and we'll see this again

  58. here in just a moment but as it talks

  59. about the book of the genealogy of Jesus

  60. Christ. What does it go on to say? The

  61. son of David, right? Matthew 1 verse

  62. one. You find it again in chapter 21 and

  63. verse 9 of Matthew. Matthew 21 and verse

  64. 9. That talks about the multitudes who

  65. went before and those who followed cried

  66. out saying, "Hosana to the son of

  67. David." We studied that last Sunday

  68. evening, didn't we? in the triumphant

  69. entry of Jesus,

  70. son of David. And so God promised to

  71. raise up a ruler, didn't he, from

  72. David's line whose kingdom would never

  73. end. We're going to see that again, too.

  74. And the angel, remember what the angel

  75. told Mary? The angel told Mary that her

  76. son would sit on the throne of his

  77. father, David.

  78. Luke 1 and verse 32.

  79. So what I'm submitting to you at the

  80. very beginning here is David is not just

  81. what we say a historical figure in time.

  82. He is a preview of Jesus Christ the

  83. righteous.

  84. So this morning we'll study from shadow

  85. to substance David and Jesus. Right off

  86. David and Jesus first thing that come to

  87. my mind was that they were both

  88. shepherds

  89. weren't they? Now

  90. when you think about David's humble

  91. beginning, I think this is paramount as

  92. well. In 1st Samuel 16 and:es 6-11, I

  93. want you to notice as again we go from

  94. Old Testament to new. That's how the

  95. shadow substance works, right? So 1st

  96. Samuel 16 and 6-11, I want you to notice

  97. how this is described of David's humble

  98. beginning. Read with me. Prove all

  99. things according to his word, not DJs.

  100. So it was when they came that he looked

  101. at Elab and said, "Surely the Lord's

  102. anointed is before him." But the Lord

  103. said to Samuel, "Do not look at his

  104. appearance or at his physical stature

  105. because I have refused him. For the Lord

  106. does not see as man sees, for man looks

  107. at the outward appearance, but the Lord

  108. looks at the heart."

  109. So Jesse called Abinadab and made him

  110. pass before Samuel and he said, "Neither

  111. has the Lord chosen this one."

  112. Then Jesse made Shah passed by and he

  113. said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this

  114. one." Then Jesse made seven of his sons

  115. pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to

  116. Jesse, "The Lord has not chosen these?"

  117. And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all the

  118. young men here?" Then he said, "There

  119. remains yet the youngest, and there he

  120. is keeping the sheep." And Samuel said

  121. to Jesse, "Send and bring him, for we

  122. will not sit down till he comes here."

  123. What we find is when Samuel when he came

  124. to anoint the next king, Jesse lined up

  125. all his sons except David.

  126. David was what we might consider young,

  127. unknown,

  128. maybe might be overlooked

  129. and he was out in the fields. He he was

  130. doing a lowly job that you know we we

  131. think about him watching the sheep and

  132. yet we think about how that's where God

  133. found him. and 2 Samuel chapter 7 and

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  134. verse 8. Now therefore, thus shall you

  135. say to my servant David, thus says the

  136. Lord of hosts, I took you from the

  137. sheepfold,

  138. from following the sheep to be ruler

  139. over my people, over Israel.

  140. That was a reminder that that's what

  141. what he has I'd say has always been

  142. intriguing to me is those we would have

  143. never considered. You ever think about

  144. that? The characters of the Bible like

  145. Moses, who's picking that guy, right?

  146. Who's who's picking these people? Would

  147. we would we would we pick those to do

  148. the chosen work?

  149. We'd say we wouldn't have.

  150. Yet, what's always been intriguing is is

  151. is God often chooses the small places

  152. and hidden jobs to shape people for

  153. larger work.

  154. Because if you consider what

  155. David was doing,

  156. he's simply a shepherd.

  157. He's just shephering sheep.

  158. But really, it's the things that you

  159. find in

  160. what a shepherd does in all the many

  161. passages that I could take take you to

  162. this morning. I don't have time to do

  163. that. Maybe a lesson for another time.

  164. But what shephering taught David, I'm

  165. just going to kind of give you a real

  166. quick rundown of this because I I will

  167. say to you that David wasn't just

  168. killing time uh with the flock, was he?

  169. Well, I would submit to you that God was

  170. training him. Wouldn't you agree?

  171. But you would say that what you find

  172. recorded in 1st Samuel 17,

  173. it's recorded that he fought off lions

  174. and bears. He recounts that, doesn't he?

  175. So he was a protector. That's what a

  176. shepherd does. They protect the sheep.

  177. He led, he fed, he guarded the sheep. He

  178. was provided tender care to them.

  179. And and and you really recognize his

  180. his love for that kind of work that he

  181. was doing, how deep that was for him,

  182. how personal it was to him. when Nathan

  183. had that confrontation with him and he

  184. used

  185. that of a sheep as part of his

  186. confrontation in that story to get David

  187. to realize something and to repent to

  188. come to his senses.

  189. So David had a connection because that's

  190. that's David's part is being

  191. [clears throat] ownership even as as he

  192. was tending to that flock that was his

  193. he treated them as as as precious. They

  194. weren't disposable.

  195. So I would say that shephering gave

  196. David a heart for the weak

  197. and I would also say that it gave him

  198. courage against danger.

  199. And what that reminds me of

  200. in regards to Jesus

  201. is how Jesus refers to himself

  202. at John 10 and verses 11- 16. Jesus

  203. said, "I am the good shepherd."

  204. The good shepherd gives his life for the

  205. sheep. But a hirling who, he who is not

  206. the shepherd, one who does not own the

  207. sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves

  208. the sheep and flees. And the wolf

  209. catches the sheep and scatters them. The

  210. hireling flees because he is a hirling

  211. and does not care about the sheep. I am

  212. the good shepherd and I know my sheep

  213. and am known by my own. As the Father

  214. knows me, even so I know the Father. And

  215. I lay down my life for the sheep. And

  216. other sheep I have which are not of this

  217. fold, them also I must bring, and they

  218. will hear my voice and there will be one

  219. flock and one shepherd. Y'all see that?

  220. Verse 11, I am the good shepherd. Jesus

  221. said the good shepherd. What does he do?

  222. He gives his life for the sheep. And

  223. what's he say in verse 14? I know my

  224. sheep and I have known by my own.

  225. Some parallels we we grasp from this

  226. real quickly is that of David who risked

  227. his life for his sheep. Jesus gave his

  228. life for souls for his sheep. David knew

  229. his flock.

  230. Jesus says he knows each of his by name.

  231. David guided sheep through physical

  232. valleys and Jesus guides us through the

  233. valleys shadow of death. Even as a

  234. psalmist would talk in Psalm 23 and

  235. verse4,

  236. there's a lot of applications that you

  237. find in each of these parallels and all

  238. of these lessons that we've been talking

  239. about and I've been sharing of those

  240. with you throughout this series

  241. that Jesus, if he's our shepherd, that

  242. means he leads you.

  243. He leads,

  244. not us.

  245. It means that we trust his voice over

  246. all others. Isn't that what verse 27

  247. that goes on to say? And like I said,

  248. there's a lot in John 10 that I would

  249. love to get into. Y'all know sometimes I

  250. I try to stay on my my notes here.

  251. John 10 and verse 27.

  252. Look what he says yet again. My sheep

  253. hear my voice and I know them and they

  254. follow me.

  255. It means we trust him. We stay with his

  256. flock and we don't wander away into

  257. spiritual danger.

  258. When we ask the question, who's really

  259. shephering my life? Jesus or my own

  260. desires? There's applications that we

  261. can put definitely with it.

  262. But you see that connection, that

  263. parallel of shepherds.

  264. But what else? David, we we might also

  265. understand that David and Jesus were

  266. both anointed. They're both anointed.

  267. Now, something interesting when you go

  268. back to 1st Samuel chapter 16

  269. is that David was anointed

  270. king while Saul still reigned.

  271. Huh?

  272. Remember in verse 13 of 1st Samuel 16,

  273. Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed

  274. him in the midst of his brothers and the

  275. spirit of the Lord came upon David from

  276. that day forward. So Samuel arose and

  277. went to Rama.

  278. Now, we know that when David was

  279. anointed, as as noted here in 1st Samuel

  280. chapter 16, that David did not

  281. immediately sit on the throne. He he

  282. didn't go straight to the palace, if you

  283. will. But Cassaul remained king,

  284. David returned to the sheep for a time,

  285. but God's anointing came a long before

  286. David's appearing as king.

  287. So this shows the already not yet

  288. aspect of God's plan.

  289. And if you go and you look at the word

  290. anointed, and I shared a few little

  291. things in my study that I found in

  292. regard to the word anointed, it comes

  293. from a Hebrew word that means Messiah.

  294. The Greek word is Christos,

  295. which is Christ.

  296. Huh?

  297. I wonder what that was pointing to. I

  298. think we know, don't we?

  299. As David

  300. was an anointed king, but yet Jesus is

  301. the anointed one.

  302. He's the true Christ. And again, you see

  303. that thread connected because of the

  304. lineage aspect.

  305. You might remember that Jesus when he

  306. was anointed, well that was by the Holy

  307. Spirit as we see in Matthew chapter 3:16

  308. and 17. When he had been baptized, Jesus

  309. came up immediately from the water.

  310. Behold, the heavens were open to him and

  311. he saw the spirit of God descending like

  312. a dove and a lighting upon him. And

  313. suddenly a voice came from heaven

  314. saying, "This is my beloved son in whom

  315. I am well pleased."

  316. You'll see that at Jesus' baptism, the

  317. spirit descended like a dove and the

  318. father's voice making this very

  319. declaration. This is my beloved son in

  320. whom I am well pleased.

  321. You know in Luke chapter 4 even in Luke

Luke 4 chapter mention Luke 4 chapter mention

  322. chapter 4 let me share with you verses

  323. 16-9 also something interesting. In Luke

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  324. chapter 4, beginning in verse 16 down

  325. through verse 19,

  326. here you have Jesus reading from the

  327. prophet Isaiah.

  328. So he came to Nazareth where he had been

  329. brought up and as his custom was, he

  330. went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day

  331. and stood up to read. And he was handed

  332. the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when

  333. he had opened the book, he found the

  334. place where it was written, "The spirit

  335. of the Lord is upon me.

  336. because he has anointed me to preach the

  337. gospel to the poor. He has sent me to

  338. heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim

  339. liberty to the captives, and recovery of

  340. sight to the blind, to set at liberty

  341. those who are oppressed, to proclaim the

  342. acceptable year of the Lord.

  343. Isn't that interesting that the prophecy

  344. fulfilled in what Jesus was anointed to

  345. do? To preach good news to the poor, to

  346. heal the brokenhearted, and to set

  347. captives free. And there is a lot to

  348. cover on that one as well.

  349. that just as David David didn't seize

  350. the throne by force

  351. and Jesus didn't start an earthly

  352. revolution either.

  353. He waited on the father's timing and

  354. chose the cross before the crown.

  355. And that's the same lesson that we learn

  356. from these examples that our task is

  357. faithfulness

  358. not self-promotion.

  359. And we see that both in the life of

  360. David as well as Jesus.

  361. What else do we get from David and

  362. Jesus? Well,

  363. a lot of times when we hear the word

  364. David, our mind goes straight to the

  365. battle of Goliath, right? Our kids

  366. already were like, "Oh yeah, we're going

  367. to talk about Goliath today." That's

  368. right. That's a part of it. David's

  369. battle and ultimate victory with

  370. Goliath, but Jesus also his battle and

  371. ultimate victory over Satan.

  372. I want to think about what these

  373. represent for just a moment. I know

  374. we've heard a lot of lessons on David

  375. and Goliath throughout our lives, but

  376. again, we we think about Goliath.

  377. He was one who towered over Israel.

  378. Strong,

  379. terrifying, armored. That's what 1st

  380. Samuel 17 records.

  381. And Israel's soldiers were well

  382. paralyzed

  383. with fear. They were unable to defeat

  384. him. They stood there hopeless unless

  385. someone else fought for them.

  386. So Goliath represented more than a

  387. giant.

  388. He is a picture of everything that

  389. overwhelms us. sin, death, Satan

  390. himself.

  391. And David the youth, remember, he

  392. stepped forward

  393. not with armor but with faith.

  394. And I've always tried to picture this in

  395. in in in my head what that was like.

  396. And what David said should resonate 1st

  397. Samuel 17:45-47.

  398. Then David said to the Philistine,

  399. "You come to me with a sword, with a

  400. spear, with a javelin, but I come to you

  401. in the name of the Lord of Hosts, the

  402. God of the armies of Israel, whom you

  403. have defied. This day the Lord will

  404. deliver you into my hand, and I will

  405. strike you and take your head from you.

  406. And this day

  407. I will give the carcasses of the camp of

  408. the Philistines, the birds of the air,

  409. and the wild beasts of the earth, that

  410. all the earth may know that there is a

  411. God in Israel. Then all of this assembly

  412. shall know that the Lord does not save

  413. with sword and spear, for the battle is

  414. the Lord's, and he will give you into

  415. our hands.

  416. You remember he took five smooth stones,

  417. yet he only needed one. And and you

  418. know, people's always ask that question.

  419. I talked about this one a while back in

  420. in a lesson that the kids were learning

  421. in David and Goliath in their classes.

  422. You ever wonder why did he take five?

  423. Why did he take five?

  424. You know what that proved to me is that

  425. David was not going to give up with just

  426. one. He was going to make sure that it

  427. was done. That showed his consistency,

  428. his persistent,

  429. but he only needed one.

  430. And with a single strike to the head,

  431. the giant fell and David remained

  432. victorious.

  433. It's powerful lessons.

  434. And I thought about Jesus.

  435. Hebrews chapter 2 10-15.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  436. Read with me. For it was fitting for him

  437. for whom are all things and by whom are

  438. all things and bringing many sons to

  439. glory to make the captain of their

  440. salvation perfect through sufferings.

  441. For both he who sanctifies and those who

  442. are being sanctified are all one. All of

  443. one. For which reason he is not ashamed

  444. to call them brethren, saying, "I will

  445. declare your name to my brethren. In the

  446. midst of the assembly, I will sing

  447. praise to you. And again, I will put my

  448. trust in him. And again, here am I in

  449. the children whom God has given me." In

  450. as much then as the children have

  451. partaken of flesh and blood, he himself

  452. likewise shared in the same, that

  453. through death he might destroy him who

  454. had the power of death, that is the

  455. devil, and release those who through the

  456. fear of death were all their lifetimes

  457. subject to bondage.

  458. I thought I thought about David in this

  459. instance for a moment and and how

  460. we think about the captain of their

  461. salvation.

  462. Kind of what David represented, wasn't

  463. he? He was the captain of of Israel's

  464. salvation in itself as he stood there

  465. with faith in God.

  466. And yet Jesus,

  467. there was no one else

  468. who could fight Goliath and no one else

  469. could defeat sin.

  470. David walked down into that valley

  471. alone. And Jesus walked up Calvar's heel

  472. alone.

  473. David struck the enemy's head. He

  474. certainly did. And Jesus fulfilled in

  475. Genesis chapter 3 and verse 15 by

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  476. striking, bruising the serpent's head.

  477. What David did for Israel physically,

  478. Jesus did for us spiritually.

  479. And what's the share in that victory?

  480. When Goliath fell, Israel shouted and

  481. pursued the Philistines. David's victory

  482. became their victory.

  483. When Jesus died, was buried, and rose

  484. again,

  485. his victory over sin, death, and hell

  486. became ours.

  487. But that's only if we are in Christ.

  488. Romans 8 1-4. Read it with me. Prove all

  489. things. There is therefore now no

  490. condemnation to those who are in Christ

  491. Jesus who do not walk according to the

  492. flesh, but according to the spirit. For

  493. the law of the spirit of life in Christ

  494. Jesus has made me free from the law of

  495. sin and death. For what the law could

  496. not do in that it was weak through the

  497. flesh, God did by setting his own son in

  498. the likeness of sinful flesh on account

  499. of sin. He condemned sin in the flesh

  500. that the righteous requirement of the

  501. law might be fulfilled in us who do not

  502. walk according to the flesh but

  503. according to the spirit.

  504. See Paul would bring all this into 1

  505. Corinthians 15. As we know 1 Corinthians

  506. 15 is letter to the Corinthians. That

  507. first letter, what's he say? Verse

  508. 54-57.

  509. So when this corruptible has put on

  510. incorruption, and this mortal has put on

  511. immortality, then shall be brought to

  512. pass the saying that is written, "Death

  513. is swallowed up in victory. Oh, death,

  514. where is your sting?" Oh, Hades, where

  515. is your victory? The sting of death is

  516. sin, and the strength of sin is the law.

  517. But thanks be to God, who gives us the

  518. victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  519. It's beautiful.

  520. The images we see, the representation,

  521. the parallels, it's all there.

  522. What else do we see about David and

  523. Jesus?

  524. Both were rejected. Both were despised.

  525. And both were persecuted.

  526. Remember David that he was hunted

  527. though anointed by God. David spent

  528. years

  529. running for his life from Saul.

  530. 1st Samuel chapter 18- 26 records

  531. this

  532. back and forth

  533. hiding in caves.

  534. He was surrounded by everyone. Look at

  535. this in 1st Samuel 22 and:e 2. And

  536. everyone who was in distress, everyone

  537. who was in debt, and everyone who was

  538. discontented gathered to him, gathered

  539. to David.

  540. What did he become over them?

  541. Captain [clears throat]

  542. Kind of rings a bell from Hebrews,

  543. doesn't it?

  544. So he became captain over them and there

  545. were about 400 men with him.

  546. Now we know from the scriptures

  547. obviously David was the rightful king,

  548. wasn't he?

  549. But although he was the rightful king,

  550. he looked like a fugitive, didn't he?

  551. Absolutely.

  552. But then we go to Jesus and we think

  553. about what about him?

  554. Well, Isaiah 53 is one of those passage.

  555. I tell y'all many times during the

  556. Lord's supper, this is one of my

  557. passages I go to and I read the entire

  558. chapter, chapter 53

  559. about the suffering savior

  560. in Isaiah 53 1-3. Who who has believed

  561. our report? And to whom has the arm of

  562. the Lord been revealed? For he shall

  563. grow up before him as a tender plant and

  564. as a root out of dry ground. He has not

  565. no form or clumliness. And when we see

  566. him, there is no beauty that we should

  567. desire him. He is despised and rejected

  568. by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted

  569. with grief. And we hid as it were our

  570. faces from him. He was despised and we

  571. did not esteem him.

  572. So Jesus himself again was rejected and

  573. despised, wasn't he?

  574. In his earthly life,

  575. his hometown rejected him. Luke 4

  576. records that in verses 28 and 29.

  577. Religious leaders, they plotted his

  578. death in John 11 and verse 53.

  579. And the crowds would cry out, what's

  580. those two words? Crucify him.

  581. What's interesting is

  582. that Jesus was

  583. the true king,

  584. but yet he wore a crown of thorns.

  585. You think about the loyalty,

  586. the few.

  587. David had a band of loyal followers

  588. obviously

  589. who believed that he was a true king

  590. even when

  591. others did not.

  592. In the same way Jesus disciples, they

  593. followed a rejected teacher, rabbi,

  594. ridiculed, persecuted, and ultimately

  595. crucified.

  596. Friends, following the son of David

  597. still means being willing to stand with

  598. a king whom the world ignores or mocks.

  599. That's what it means.

  600. accepting that favor with God may may

  601. mean reproach from men.

  602. Hebrews chapter 13 12-16. Read with me.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  603. Hebrews 13:12-16.

    Hebrews 13:12–16

  604. Therefore Jesus also that he might

  605. sanctify the people with his own blood

  606. suffered outside the gate.

  607. Therefore let us go forth to him outside

  608. the camp bearing his reproach.

  609. For here we have no continuing city, but

  610. we seek the one to come.

  611. Therefore, by him let us continually

  612. offer the sacrifice of praise to God,

  613. that is the fruit of our lips,

  614. giving thanks to his name.

  615. But do not forget to do good and to

  616. share, for which for with such

  617. sacrifices God is well pleased.

  618. what the Hebrew writer is still saying

  619. today.

  620. If our king was rejected, should we be

  621. surprised when his people are?

  622. I think it's answered quite clearly that

  623. we should not be shocked and in awe.

  624. But yet that is what so many today face.

  625. We we ourselves find ourselves fearful

  626. to share about our king. But yet we

  627. claim citizenship in his kingdom.

  628. We can't do that. We can't have it both

  629. ways.

  630. And we have to show our children that

  631. they can't have it both ways either.

  632. Jesus said, "If you're with me

  633. or you're against me,

  634. that's it."

  635. Lots of lessons that I can go on with

  636. that, but time will not allow another

  637. time.

  638. Also, David and Jesus,

  639. let's talk about David's throne and

  640. Jesus's eternal kingdom.

  641. When you go back to the Old Testament

  642. book of 2 Samuel chapter 7, there's a

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  643. promise that was given. The promise that

  644. I mentioned at the very introduction in

  645. 2 Samuel chapter 7. Let's read verses

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  646. 12-6.

  647. Says, "When your days are fulfilled and

  648. you rest with your fathers, I will set

  649. up your seat after you. Who will come

  650. from your body and I will establish his

  651. kingdom?

  652. He shall build a house for my name, and

  653. I will establish the throne of his

  654. kingdom forever. I will be his father.

  655. He shall be my son. If he commits

  656. iniquity, I will chasten him with a rod

  657. of men and with the blows of the sons of

  658. men. But my mercy shall not depart from

  659. him as I took it from Saul whom I

  660. removed from before you and your house

  661. and your kingdom shall be established

  662. forever before you. Your throne shall be

  663. established forever. Some perplexing

  664. statements sometimes we read that I

  665. think when David was receiving this you

  666. know he might have h forever because

  667. here's this dynasty. Sometimes we use

  668. that word this this house, this kingdom,

  669. a throne that would be established

  670. forever that's being noted here. And

  671. part of this was fulfilled in Solomon,

  672. right? Solomon was also David's son,

  673. okay? But not all of it. Now, you know,

  674. Solomon's kingdom, it ended. The throne

  675. in Jerusalem eventually fell.

  676. Yet, here we have it that God said,

  677. "Your throne shall be established

  678. forever." What's going on?

  679. What we have to see in the prophecy is

  680. that this pointed to another son of

  681. David that we talked about in Matthew 1

  682. and verse one already and that is the

  683. son of David

  684. the Messiah

  685. the anointed one right Christos

  686. the New Testament as I mentioned already

  687. from Matthew 1 and verse one the book of

  688. the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of

  689. David

  690. son of Abraham

  691. the lineage, the importance of the

  692. genealogy that you find throughout

  693. Matthew chapter 1, making that very

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  694. connection.

  695. Luke 1:es 23, I'm sorry, 32 and 33 that

  696. says he will be great and be called the

  697. son of the highest and the Lord God will

  698. give him the throne of his father David

  699. and he'll reign over the house of Jacob

  700. forever and of his kingdom there will be

  701. no end.

  702. But is that where it stopped?

  703. No.

  704. Obviously, Acts chapter 2 in our

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  705. scripture reading this morning. What did

  706. you see that speaks of therefore being a

  707. prophet and knowing that God has sworn

  708. with an oath to him that of the fruit of

  709. his body according to the flesh he would

  710. raise up the Christ to sit on his

  711. throne.

  712. He foreseeing this spoke concerning the

  713. resurrection of the Christ that his soul

  714. was not lived in Hades, nor did his

  715. flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has

  716. raised up of which we all are witnesses.

  717. Therefore, being exalted the right hand

  718. of God, and having received from the

  719. Father the promise of the Holy Spirit,

  720. he poured out this which you now see and

  721. hear. What is it? Verse 34.

  722. For David did not ascend to the heavens,

  723. but he says himself, the Lord said to my

  724. Lord, "Sit at my right hand till I make

  725. your enemies your foottool."

  726. Therefore, let all the house of Israel

  727. know assuredly that God has made this

  728. Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and

  729. Christ. Oh, you know, not too long ago,

  730. we were doing prophecies, uh, the series

  731. on prophecies, and and you know what's

  732. we find there in that passage of verse

  733. 34

  734. is exactly

  735. that of what we find in Psalms.

  736. Prophecy fulfilled.

  737. Peter declared that Jesus is now sitted

  738. at seated at God's right hand fulfilling

  739. God's promise to David all the way back

  740. from 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  741. So here's the thing. Jesus kingdom,

  742. it's spiritual. It's not political.

  743. Jesus answered in John 18:36 before

    John 18:36

  744. Pilate, he says, "My kingdom is not of

  745. this world. If my kingdom were of this

  746. world, my servants would fight so that I

  747. should not be delivered to the Jews. But

  748. now my kingdom is not from here. It's

  749. not of this world.

  750. And where did his kingdom begin? The

  751. kingdom that Jesus said, "Upon this

  752. rock, I'll build my church and the gates

  753. of hell shall not prevail against it."

  754. Matthew 16:18. And in Acts chapter 2,

Matthew 16:18 Acts 2 chapter mention

  755. what happened? It began in power day of

  756. Pentecost.

  757. Who all makes up this kingdom? Well,

  758. Colossians chapter 1 13 and 14 gives us

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  759. a big clue, doesn't it? He has delivered

  760. us from the power of darkness and

  761. conveyed us into the kingdom of the son

  762. of his love in whom we have redemption

  763. through his blood, the forgiveness of

  764. sins. It's made up of those who are

  765. Christians, those who have submitted to

  766. him as lord of lords and king of kings.

  767. You see, David reigned about what 40

  768. years over Israel.

  769. Jesus reigns forever over heaven and

  770. earth. That's what Jesus himself even

  771. made known in Matthew 28:18. And Jesus

    Matthew 28:18

  772. came and spoke to them, saying, "All

  773. authority has been given to me in heaven

  774. and on earth."

  775. See, David could rule over his people,

  776. but only for a limited time.

  777. The difference is though, Jesus rules in

  778. the hearts of his people forever.

  779. That translates all the way into

  780. eternity.

  781. You see, to be saved is not to simply

  782. accept Jesus as savior, as many have

  783. put, but it's about submission to him as

  784. king. It's about obeying his will,

  785. repenting of our sins, confessing him to

  786. be the son of living God, and being

  787. baptized, immersed, buried with him in

  788. baptism to rise and walk in newness of

  789. life. As Romans 6:3 and4 says, to walk

    Romans 6:3

  790. in newness of life.

  791. We obey his commands.

  792. What did Jesus say in Luke 6:46?

    Luke 6:46

  793. Why call me Lord, Lord, and not do the

  794. things which I say?

  795. We seek his kingdom first. Matthew 6 and

  796. verse 33. Seek ye first the kingdom of

  797. God is righteous and all these things

  798. shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33.

    Matthew 6:33

  799. And what do we do? We do exactly as Paul

  800. told the brethren at Philippi,

  801. Philippians 3:20. We actually live as

    Philippians 3:20

  802. citizens of his kingdom. We live in such

  803. a way that honors the king.

  804. The question is not is Jesus king.

  805. That's already been answered.

  806. He already is. The question that we have

  807. to ask am I willingly under his rule and

  808. does he live within me?

  809. I I I say to you that there's a lot of

  810. shadows and substance here. The shadows

  811. that point to the substance that is

  812. Jesus Christ. And

  813. the chart again as I've been giving you

  814. every every one of these lessons.

  815. There's handouts there in the in the

  816. back. I was able to summarize a lot of

  817. that right there. Again, has scriptures.

  818. So, make sure to grab one of those. And

  819. uh if you if you want that in uh PDF

  820. form or what have you, let me know and

  821. I'll email that to you.

  822. But it gives you again a lot of the

  823. parallels we see. And and what I want to

  824. share with you, just like I have in the

  825. last the last several that we've done,

  826. David's account that we have of him, his

  827. story is some say it it points beyond

  828. itself.

  829. It's like an outline that only makes

  830. full sense when Jesus steps onto the

  831. scene.

  832. And that's the way it has been for the

  833. others that we have noted.

  834. When Jesus steps onto the scene, you see

  835. the puzzle

  836. completed.

  837. When we read about David,

  838. I think about a shepherd with a sling, a

  839. fugitive in the cave, the king on the

  840. throne, a man after God's own heart is

  841. Acts 13:22. That's I think about David

    Acts 13:22

  842. like that. Don't you? Now, he had some

  843. other parts obviously of his life.

  844. But when you think about Jesus,

  845. what do we think about? the good

  846. shepherd, the suffering servant, the

  847. exalted king, and the perfect reflection

  848. of God's heart as Hebrews 7 26.

  849. That's what I see.

  850. What David foreshadowed Jesus fulfilled.

  851. David could lead his people to victory

  852. over enemies like Goliath. He could do

  853. it.

  854. Jesus leads us to victory over sin and

  855. death. and it translates into eternity.

  856. David could rule from Jerusalem,

  857. but Jesus rules from heaven itself

  858. where our citizenship lies.

  859. David died. He was buried. And his tomb

  860. is with us this day. That's that's what

  861. we read in Acts, didn't we?

  862. Y'all remember Acts 2? That was our

  863. scripture reading.

  864. Jesus died, was buried, and rose again,

  865. his tombs empty.

  866. What Peter was impressing upon the

  867. people

  868. that heard this very powerful gospel

  869. sermon on the day of Pentecost.

  870. It's not a question as do I admire

  871. David.

  872. It's have I surrendered to the son of

  873. David,

  874. the one who pointed all the way forward

  875. to fulfill the prophecies,

  876. the king of kings and the lord of lords.

  877. Friends, the king of kings

  878. invites you into his kingdom.

  879. I mentioned a moment ago God's plan of

  880. salvation. You believe that Jesus is the

  881. Christ and living God. Do you believe

  882. that? Do you believe

  883. that he is truly reigning

  884. and that one day we will see him

  885. coming in the clouds?

  886. If you believe in Jesus, then you better

  887. do what he says as king over his

  888. kingdom. He's asking, he is saying,

  889. submit, repent of your sins, confess

  890. him, and be baptized into him for the

  891. remission of your sins.

  892. So you can be conveyed into the kingdom

  893. of the son of his love as Colossians 1

  894. and verse 13 said and walk under the

  895. loving rule of the true shepherd king.

  896. All things stand ready.

  897. If you are subject if you are already a

  898. Christian

  899. but have drifted from your king

  900. you can come back. David himself, we

  901. know, needed mercy and restoration,

  902. didn't he? Psalm 51 speaks of that. But

  903. Jesus, the greater son of David, still

  904. extends grace to those who return.

  905. How thankful we should ever be for that.

  906. And what do we need to do? As a song

  907. will say as we sing it together, we need

  908. to trust and obey. Blessed are all they

  909. that put their trust in him. Psalm 2 and

  910. verse 12. Won't you do that this

  911. morning? Whatever your spiritual need

  912. is, won't you come as we stand, as we

  913. sing the song that's been selected.
