  1. This morning we continue in our series

  2. of lessons we started several Sundays

  3. ago and that of course is our shadows to

  4. substance series. And I would encourage

  5. you to again go in your Bibles here just

  6. a moment. We'll be looking at the book

  7. of Jonah. Jonah.

  8. Now,

  9. as we have noted throughout this series

  10. that God did not reveal his plan of

  11. redemption by happen stance,

  12. accidentally,

  13. suddenly,

  14. but progressively through those shadows

  15. that we've been talking about in this

  16. series, those shadows of the Old

  17. Testament that points to the very

  18. substance that is in Christ. as we've

  19. noted in Colossians 2 and verse 17, a

  20. shadow of things to come, but the

  21. substance is Christ. And so, as we have

  22. looked at at numerous, and again, we

  23. we've been looking at persons to person

  24. uh uh through many of them. We looked at

  25. uh one being thing to person uh

  26. regarding the tabernacle. And so, we

  27. still have some ground to cover that

  28. we're going to look together at. But for

  29. this morning, we are going to consider

  30. the life of Jonah as a type and shadow

  31. of Christ. It's probably one of the most

  32. unexpected persons to person type or

  33. anti-ype for that matter in this series

  34. of lessons. And when I said Jonah, the

  35. book of Jonah, like, well, what is he

  36. doing with this? Well, the scripture

  37. reading this morning might have been a

  38. hint. Okay. So, Jonah in in many

  39. respects

  40. contrast sharply with Jesus. All right.

  41. Uh, nevertheless, Jesus identified clear

  42. points of comparison that link their

  43. lives and missions. It's pretty

  44. interesting. In our Bible studies and in

  45. the lessons of the life of Jonah, uh, we

  46. might summarize the four chapters of the

  47. book of Jonah simply as Jonah runs from

  48. God. Jonah is swallowed by a great fish.

  49. Jonah prays and delivered and Jonah

  50. preaches in Nineveh. We might just say,

  51. well, that's pretty much summarizes

  52. Jonah. Obviously, there's a lot more in

  53. those four chapters. But, uh, a lot of

  54. lessons that we consider, but Jesus

  55. himself tells us that Jonas that Jonah

  56. is one of the clearest pictures of his

  57. own mission, his death, his burial, and

  58. resurrection. Matthew 12 and verse 40

  59. from this morning's scripture reading

  60. says what? For as Jonah was three days

  61. and three nights in the belly of the

  62. great fish, so will the Son of Man be

  63. three days and three nights in the heart

  64. of the earth.

  65. Now, I want us to walk through this

  66. remarkable shadow and see how Jonah

  67. points us to Jesus, who is the true

  68. prophet, the perfect preacher, and the

  69. risen Lord.

  70. So Jonah and Jesus, one of the first

  71. ones that I thought about in kind of

  72. working my way through Jonah chapter 1

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  73. through chapter 4 is

  74. firstly Jonah was sent to preach to the

  75. lost. Jesus was sent to seek and save

  76. the lost.

  77. In Jonah's commission, we might put it

  78. that way in Jonah chapter 1. Look at

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  79. Jonah chapter 1:es 1 and two. Now the

  80. word of the Lord came to Jonah the son

  81. of Amiti, saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh,

  82. that great city, and cry out against it,

  83. for their wickedness has come up before

  84. me." So

  85. this this commission that Jonah is given

  86. is, I believe, would say, very pointed.

  87. It's simple. It's direct. It's

  88. unavoidable. Right? What's he say?

  89. Arise, go to Nineveh, and cry out

  90. against it. Well, Nineveh, just a little

  91. background again, just a reminder, is

  92. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria. And

  93. the people of Nineveh were quite well

  94. known for their brutality. They were

  95. barbaric kind of uh people. They were

  96. idolatrous. They were violent is what

  97. I'm saying. And oh, and they were they

  98. were an enemy of Israel as well. Okay.

  99. So from a human perspective when we talk

  100. about Jonah, Jonah's uh had every reason

  101. to avoid them. Uh but from God's

  102. perspective is he cared for them.

  103. Jonah's mission shows us God's heart for

  104. the lost. You you see that in this

  105. passage that even what one may consider

  106. to be the worst of the lost, who would

  107. want to go to Nineveh and and preach

  108. repentance to them?

  109. But then in contrast,

  110. Jonah's reluctant journey with Jesus

  111. entire purpose as we find in Luke

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  112. chapter 19 and verse 10. Luke 19:10

    Luke 19:10

  113. says, "For the son of man has come to

  114. seek and to save that which was lost."

  115. I think we we are quite well aware when

  116. we think about the contrast here is that

  117. Jesus didn't run from sinners did he uh

  118. he's that we find ran toward them. Uh

  119. truth be told Jesus is recorded you know

  120. spending more time with sinners than

  121. religious leaders. Uh he was called even

  122. in Luke 7:34 the son of man has come

    Luke 7:34

  123. eating and drinking. You say look a

  124. glutton and a wine a friend of tax

  125. collectors and sinners.

  126. I mean understanding that his mission

  127. was was not Israel only but his mission

  128. was for the whole world. We know John

    John 3:16

  129. 3:16 and 17 it says for God so loved the

  130. world that he gave his only begotten son

  131. that whosoever believes in him should

  132. not perish but have everlasting

  133. life. For God did not send his son into

  134. the world to condemn the world, but that

  135. the world through him might be saved.

  136. Where Jonah was sent to one city,

  137. Jesus was went was sent to a world in

  138. darkness.

  139. And I want you to think about this.

  140. If Jesus came to seek the lost, then his

  141. church must share his mission.

  142. Because evangelism is not optional.

  143. It's not optional. It's the very

  144. heartbeat of God. And Jesus provided us

  145. the great example in demonstrating such

  146. in his life. And yay, even in his own

  147. death.

  148. What else do we think about with Jonah

  149. and Jesus? Jonah ran from God's will.

  150. Jesus ran towards God's will.

  151. In verse three of Jonah chapter 1, we

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  152. know that Jonah arose to flee to Tarses

  153. from the presence of the Lord. He went

  154. down to Japa and found a ship going to

  155. Tarses. So he paid the fair and went

  156. down into it to go with them to Tarsus

  157. from the presence of the Lord. Friends,

  158. I always think that he bought a ticket

  159. to go to Tarses.

  160. He paid the fair. Nineveh is reported to

  161. have been over 500 miles

  162. northeast from Jonah's hometown.

  163. Tarses

  164. would have been two or three times that

  165. distance, the opposite direction,

  166. thousands of miles.

  167. Jonah was attempting to go to the

  168. extreme western reaches of the known

  169. world while Nineveh

  170. lay far to the northeast illustrating

  171. how drastically he tried to escape God's

  172. commission. Why?

  173. Why was that? Well, Jonah chapter 4 and

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  174. verse two,

  175. remember? So he prayed to the Lord and

  176. said, "Ah, Lord, was not this what I

  177. said when I was still in my country?

  178. Therefore, I fled previously to Tarsus,

  179. for I know that you are a gracious and

  180. merciful God, slow to anger and abundant

  181. loving kindness, one who relents from

  182. doing harm."

  183. Now, that's a reason, isn't it? The

  184. reason that he was getting as far away

  185. as he possibly could of God's commission

  186. was because he didn't want Nineveh

  187. saved.

  188. He says, "I I I knew you were gracious.

  189. I knew you were merciful."

  190. But you contrast that with Jesus.

  191. In John 6 and:e 38, Jesus said,"For I

  192. have come down from heaven not to do my

  193. own will, but the will of him who sent

  194. me."

  195. Of course, Jesus, he never hesitated to

  196. obey, never resisted the father, never

  197. ran from a difficult command. But even

  198. in Gethsemane although you the thinking

  199. about that that robe that he was that

  200. cross that he was going to bear

  201. the death that he would die what do you

  202. pray in Luke 22:41-42

    Luke 22:41–42

  203. I think the kids were learning about

  204. this in their Bible class this morning

  205. Luke 22:41-42

    Luke 22:41–42

  206. Jesus praying in Gethsemane

  207. and he was withdrawn from them about a

  208. stone's throw and he knelt down and

  209. prayed saying father if it is your will

  210. take this cup away from me.

  211. Nevertheless, not my will but yours

  212. be done.

  213. What we see is that Jonah shows the

  214. danger

  215. of resisting God's voice. Jesus shows

  216. the beauty of surrender to God's will.

  217. What about the storm in the book of

  218. Jonah? in in Jonah

  219. in Jonah chapter 1 as we know it

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  220. progresses from there in Jonah chapter

  221. 1:es 4 and 5 that we think about this

  222. storm well

  223. we know the storm that we see in with

  224. that of Jonah we also see the storm with

  225. Jesus who was also on a boat at one time

  226. wasn't he Jonah caused the storm while

  227. Jesus calmed the storm

  228. and Jonah remember when he ran

  229. says that the Lord sent out a great wind

  230. on the sea and there was a mighty

  231. tempest on the sea so that the ship was

  232. about to be broken up.

  233. Mariners were afraid and every man cried

  234. out to his God and threw the cargo that

  235. was in the ship into the sea to lighten

  236. the load. But Jonah had gone had down

  237. into the lowest parts of the ship had

  238. laid down and was fast asleep.

  239. Think about that. The sailors panicked.

  240. The ship almost sank. And Jonah,

  241. symbolizing spiritual apathy, was fast

  242. asleep.

  243. Jonah slept in rebellion.

  244. Jonah slept in denial.

  245. Jonah slept while souls were perishing

  246. around him.

  247. However, in contrast to Jonah, we find

  248. Jesus storm in Mark 4:es 37-39.

  249. And a great windstorm arose and the

  250. waves beat into the boat so that it was

  251. already feeling. But he was in the storm

  252. in in a stern asleep on a pillow. And

  253. they awoke him and said to him,

  254. "Teacher, do you not care that we are

  255. perishing?" Then he arose and rebuked

  256. the wind and said to the sea, "Peace be

  257. still." And the wind ceased, and there

  258. was a great calm.

  259. See, Jesus, he slept in a storm,

  260. but he slept with a clean conscience,

  261. full faith, and perfect peace. And when

  262. he w when when he awakened, Jesus

  263. rebuked the the wind and he said, "Peace

  264. be still."

  265. Jonah's presence brought chaos to the

  266. sea.

  267. Jesus presence brought calm.

  268. And what we find in contrast from the

  269. life of Jonah and Jesus is, I think,

  270. quite simple.

  271. Running from God creates storms.

  272. walking with him calms them.

  273. What else do we find from the life of

  274. Jonah? Well, Jonah offered himself to

  275. save others.

  276. Jesus offered himself to save the world.

  277. in verses 10-2 of Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  278. Remember obviously there the men were

  279. afraid exceedingly afraid obviously and

  280. and said to Jonah,"Wh have you done

  281. this? For the men knew that he fled from

  282. the presence of the Lord because he had

  283. told them." Then they said to him, "What

  284. shall we do to you that the sea may be

  285. calm for us?"

  286. For the sea was growing more temptous.

  287. And he said to them, "Pick me up and

  288. throw me into the sea. and the sea will

  289. become calm for you. For I know that

  290. this great temptest is because of me. So

  291. Jonah recognized he was because of the

  292. danger. He told them and by giving

  293. himself up the sailors would be spared.

  294. And that's what happened.

  295. Jesus in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  296. and verses 17 and 18.

  297. Therefore my father loves me because I

  298. lay down my life that I may take it

  299. again. No one takes it from me but I lay

  300. it down of myself. I have power to lay

  301. it down and I have power to take it

  302. again. This command I have received from

  303. my father.

  304. Yes, Jonah offered himself to save a

  305. ship, save the people that were on the

  306. ship. Jesus offered himself to save the

  307. world.

  308. Jonah's

  309. death would calm a temporary storm.

  310. Jesus' death would calm the eternal

  311. storm of sin.

  312. You think about this in this passage

  313. of what that meant

  314. of Jonah offering himself to save

  315. others.

  316. That he was willing to give his life so

  317. that the others would be saved. Right?

  318. But Jesus again

  319. will be able to calm the eternal storm

  320. of sin.

  321. Well, then Jonah, Jonah's burial, and I

  322. I put quotes there. Jonah's burial and

  323. the fish

  324. and the great fish, but Jesus burial in

  325. the tomb. I want you to notice this as

  326. well. In Jonah 1:1 17, we have this

    Jonah 1:1

  327. recorded that the Lord had prepared a

  328. great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah

  329. was in the belly of the fish

  330. three days and three nights.

  331. Now, what such represented to Jonah,

  332. it was the very realm of death. And I

  333. know that because of what's recorded in

  334. Jonah chapter 2. If you look at Jonah

Jonah 2 chapter mention Jonah 2 chapter mention

  335. chapter 2, look at verse two. And he

  336. said, "I cried out to the Lord because

  337. of my affliction and he answered me. Out

  338. of the belly of sh I cried and you heard

  339. my voice."

  340. You see, to Jonah, he was as good as

  341. dead. I mean,

  342. he was cut off. He was helpless.

  343. Buried in watery darkness.

  344. But Jesus burial,

  345. think about that. I think of Matthew 27

  346. 59 and 60.

  347. Matthew 27:59 and 60. When Joseph had

    Matthew 27:59

  348. taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean

  349. linen cloth and laid it in his new tomb

  350. which he had horned out of the rock. And

  351. he rolled a large stone against the door

  352. of the tomb and departed.

  353. Jesus is described being wrapped, laid

  354. in the tomb, sealed, left in silence.

  355. And Jesus says Jonah's experience was a

  356. prophecy of his own.

  357. Jesus draws upon Jonah's experience to

  358. foretell his own descent into shield or

  359. hades

  360. saying as we saw in Matthew 12:40

    Matthew 12:40

  361. when Jesus referred to this it says for

  362. as Jonah was three days and three nights

  363. in the belly of the great fish so will

  364. the son of man be three days and three

  365. nights in the heart of the earth.

  366. You know, the same the same idea

  367. seems to surface in Peter's sermon on

  368. the day of Pentecost.

  369. When you go to the book of Acts and go

  370. to Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  371. this is where Peter he cites the

  372. passage.

  373. Acts chapter 2 26 and 27.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  374. Therefore, my heart rejoiced and my

  375. tongue was glad. nor will my flesh also

  376. arrest in hope. For you will not leave

  377. my soul in Hades.

  378. Nor will you allow your holy one to see

  379. corruption.

  380. See, Jesus willingly offered his life to

  381. secure salvation for others.

  382. He moved from the wooden cross to the

  383. tomb, stayed in the grave for three

  384. days, then rose from the dead.

  385. And after his resurrection, he fulfilled

  386. the father's purpose by commissioning

  387. his apostles and establishing his

  388. church, the kingdom.

  389. See, Jonah's

  390. death was a symbol.

  391. Jesus death was the substance

  392. that redeems mankind.

  393. But then obviously it doesn't stop there

  394. because although we have the death, we

  395. also have a resurrection, don't we?

  396. Think about Jonah's resurrection

  397. and Jesus glorious resurrection.

  398. You go to Jonah 2 and verse 10, it's,

  399. you know,

  400. simply put, the Lord spoke to the fish

  401. and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

  402. And although it's an ugly scene,

  403. obviously,

  404. there's certainly beautiful meaning

  405. because Jonah emerges alive when he

  406. should have perished.

  407. And he experiences

  408. a type of resurrection, if you will, not

  409. physical, but symbolic.

  410. Think about what's said in Mark 16 and

  411. verse 6.

  412. But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed.

  413. You seek Jesus of Nazareth whom was

  414. crucified. Who was crucified? He is

  415. risen. He's not here.

  416. See the place where they laid him. See,

  417. Jesus resurrection was literal, bodily

  418. witnessed, world changing, eternal.

  419. Jonah walked out of darkness to preach

  420. repentance. Jesus walked out of the tomb

  421. to bring salvation.

  422. Friends, the resurrection of Jesus is

  423. the center. It's the very core of our

  424. faith. If he lives, obviously, then sin

  425. is defeated. Death is temporary. Our

  426. hope is secure. And that's exactly what

  427. Paul was talking about in 1 Corinthians

  428. 15.

  429. Jonah

  430. and Jesus.

  431. We got through chapter one and chapter

  432. two.

  433. What's chapter 3 show us?

  434. Well, Jonah preached repentance. Jesus

  435. preached repentance and salvation.

  436. I thought about this. Obviously, we

  437. don't have the full transcript of

  438. Jonah's sermon. I'm I'm guessing that

  439. the only thing that we have recorded is

  440. that he says, "Yet 40 days and Nineveh

  441. shall be overthrown."

  442. Short sermon, long results, I think that

  443. we will say on that. But this is what

  444. the word of the Lord came to Jonah the

  445. second time and said, "Arise, go to

  446. Nineveh, that great city, and preach it.

  447. Preach to it the message that I tell

  448. you." So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh

  449. according to the word of the Lord. Now

  450. Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a

  451. three-day journey in extent.

  452. Jonah began to enter the city on the

  453. first day's walked, and he cried out and

  454. said, here's those words again, yet 40

  455. days and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  456. Jonah preached judgment

  457. and Nineveh repented from the king down.

  458. That's what we find in Jonah chapter

  459. 3:es 5-10 that talks about the king

  460. sackcloth and ashes and all. And then it

  461. says, "And God saw their works that they

  462. turned from their evil way and God

  463. relented from the disaster that he had

  464. said he would bring upon them and he did

  465. not do it.

  466. What's Jesus message?

  467. We understand repentance, right?

  468. Repentance is is that of a change of

  469. heart, change of mind leads to a change

  470. of direction, a change of life. In Mark

  471. 1:es 14 and 15, we find that that that's

  472. what Jesus was preaching that after John

  473. was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee

  474. preaching the gospel of the kingdom of

  475. God and saying, "The time is fulfilled

  476. and the kingdom of God is at hand.

  477. Repent and believe in the gospel.

  478. You see, Jesus' message in preaching

  479. repentance, it was it was so much more

  480. in the gospel.

  481. Forgiveness, new life, spiritual

  482. rebirth, the kingdom of God, eternal

  483. salvation.

  484. And then we find ourselves in Jonah

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  485. chapter 4.

  486. Jonah and Jesus.

  487. Jonah resented God's mercy, but Jesus

  488. embodied God's mercy. In Jonah chapter

  489. 4:es 1-3, it's kind of almost shocks us.

  490. I mean, every time I read it, it shocks

  491. me. But look at the first three verses

  492. of Jonah chapter 4

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  493. that remember they just repented.

  494. Nineveh repented.

  495. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and

  496. he became angry. So he prayed to the

  497. Lord and said, "Ah, Lord, was not this

  498. what I said when I was still in my

  499. country? Therefore, I fled previously to

  500. Tarses, for I know that you are a

  501. gracious and merciful God, slow to anger

  502. and abundant, loving kindness, one who

  503. relents from doing harm. Therefore now,

  504. oh Lord, please take my life from me,

  505. for it is better for me to die than to

  506. live.

  507. That's a shocking statement, isn't it?

  508. That Jonah was displeased exceedingly

  509. and he became angry. Jonah was angry

  510. that Nineveh repented. He was angry that

  511. God was gracious.

  512. It's quite interesting that Jonah loved

  513. receiving mercy but struggled when mercy

  514. was shown to others.

  515. But Jesus as we know is quite opposite

  516. of Jonah. For Jesus was never angry when

  517. sinners repented. He rejoiced. He gave a

  518. whole bunch of parables, didn't he? In

  519. Luke chapter 15

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  520. about the lost coin, the lost son.

  521. Remember again as it was his Jesus

  522. mission. That was his mission. Luke

    Luke 19:10

  523. 19:10 was to seek and to save that which

  524. is lost.

  525. Jesus became emotional over the lost.

  526. Luke 19 and verse 41 records that as he

  527. drew near, he saw the city and wept over

  528. it. Y'all remember why?

  529. Even look at Matthew 23 gives us some

  530. insight as well. Verses 37-39.

  531. How often I would have gathered you

  532. together as a hen with her chicks, but

  533. you were not. You were not willing.

  534. Behold, your house is left you desolate.

  535. Jesus as we know forgave his enemies.

  536. Jesus came full of grace and truth. John

  537. 1 and verse 14.

  538. Jonah resisted mercy.

  539. Jesus is mercy.

  540. Friends, there's lots of applications I

  541. believe even in this one that we always

  542. have to check our hearts.

  543. Can you imagine being angry when God

  544. saves those who

  545. we think don't deserve saving?

  546. Do we rejoice when God saves

  547. those

  548. two

  549. friends in many respects

  550. I believe we have seen through this

  551. lesson Jonah's Jonah was quite different

  552. from Jesus right

  553. yet Jesus deliberately deliberately

  554. parallels

  555. his own experience with Jonas

  556. and by doing so he provided his

  557. listeners with another clue that he

  558. intended

  559. to give his life and face death for all

  560. humanity. Jesus was intentional on this

  561. and they may not have fully grasped this

  562. beforehand, but the meaning

  563. became unmistakable once he arose from

  564. the grave and extended the hope of

  565. eternal life to all who would trust and

  566. obey.

  567. that although Jonah as a person may not

  568. perfectly represent Jesus,

  569. the situations he encountered with God

  570. clearly foreshadow the key moments in

  571. Jesus mission to fulfill the father's

  572. will on earth.

  573. It's also evident that God arranged the

  574. circumstances

  575. around Jonah's story so the people in

  576. Jesus day and later Gentiles, Gentile

  577. converts and even believers today could

  578. recognize those parallels

  579. and learn from them. As I have been

  580. giving these handouts every Sunday and

  581. doing this series, uh obviously it's

  582. always smaller on the chart there. So,

  583. grab a handout. There's some in the

  584. back. I still see of several that I have

  585. added here regarding the shadows of

  586. sufface regarding Jonah and Jesus.

  587. Thinking about Jonah, a prophet.

  588. Jesus is the prophet.

  589. Jonah dead three days. Jesus buried and

  590. risen three days. Jonah preached to one

  591. city. Jesus preached to all nations.

  592. Jonah resented mercy. Jesus is mercy.

  593. Offered mercy. And many other ones that

  594. that again, make sure to grab a chart

  595. with the scripture references there for

  596. you. The point that I have shown

  597. throughout this series yet again with

  598. another example here that we're using

  599. with that of the life of Jonah is the

  600. shadow points forward.

  601. The substance stands before us in Jesus

  602. Christ. Friends, the words of Jesus in

  603. Matthew 12 are both sobering and

  604. hopeful. What we started with in our

  605. scripture reading this morning, I will

  606. end with in Matthew 12:39-41.

    Matthew 12:39–41

  607. Again, an evil and adulterous generation

  608. seeks after a sign, and no sign will be

  609. given to it, except

  610. the sign of the prophet Jonah.

  611. For as Jonah was three days and three

  612. nights in the belly of the great fish,

  613. so will the Son of Man be three days and

  614. three nights in the heart of the earth.

  615. The men of Nineveh will rise up into

  616. judgment with this generation and

  617. condemn it because they repented as the

  618. preaching of Jonah. after preaching of

  619. Jonah and indeed a greater than Jonah is

  620. here.

  621. Jesus reminds us that his resurrection

  622. is the ultimate sign, the proof of his

  623. identity and the foundation of our hope.

  624. Jonah came back from the depths of the

  625. sea.

  626. Jesus came back from the depths of the

  627. grave.

  628. Jonah's message brought repentance to a

  629. wicked city.

  630. Jesus message brings salvation to the

  631. whole world.

  632. But notice what Jesus says. The people

  633. of Nineveh, what how how are they

  634. described earlier in the lesson? Y'all

  635. remember they were pagans. They were

  636. idolattors. They were barbaric. They

  637. were violent.

  638. They repented when God called them. And

  639. Jesus says they will stand in judgment

  640. against all who refuse to repent today

  641. because indeed a greater than Jonah is

  642. here.

  643. I looked at this passage many times in

  644. the for John and I if if Nineveh could

  645. repent

  646. certainly we can too.

  647. If God offered mercy to them he

  648. certainly offers mercy to us. But

  649. repentance cannot wait. Judgment is

  650. certain. A risen savior stands ready to

  651. save. But he does not force himself on

  652. anyone. And his resurrection is God's

  653. final

  654. and undeniable sign. And now the choice

  655. is ours. Friends, the God who gave

  656. Nineveh a second chance is offering you

  657. one this morning.

  658. Salvation that Jesus came to offer to

  659. all. Having heard the word, you believe

  660. that Jesus Christ is the son of living

  661. in God.

  662. To repent of your sins,

  663. change of heart, a change of mind, which

  664. leads to a change of life, confessing

  665. Jesus to be the son of God. I mean,

  666. baptized, immersed, buried with him in

  667. baptism, to rise and walk in newness of

  668. life, to remain faithful to him,

  669. to do as he wishes, as he so desires, as

  670. he so wills. You can do that this

  671. morning. All things stand ready. As a

  672. Christian, if you have wandered away,

  673. maybe going the opposite direction like

  674. Jonah was,

  675. don't run no more.

  676. Repent like Nineveh.

  677. God is grace, graceful,

  678. merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in

  679. loving kindness. And how thankful we

  680. should ever be for that.

  681. May we be like Paul in this song, living

  682. for Jesus. Christ liveth in me and the

  683. life which I now live I live by faith in

  684. the son of God. Won't you do that? Won't

  685. you be Won't you respond to this

  686. invitation call subject to it? Won't you

  687. come as we stand as we sing this song

  688. that's been selected.
