  1. Well, last Sunday I was out, my family

  2. and I were out of uh town.

  3. [clears throat] We were um I was

  4. preaching a meeting effort in Bumont.

  5. So, appreciate so much those who filled

  6. in for me while I was out and also

  7. filling for kids. He wants you in the

  8. kids Bible class there. Uh but uh

  9. certainly do appreciate uh the efforts

  10. that are put forth and those so capable

  11. that able to do that. And uh so you had

  12. a little break in a sense from the

  13. shadows to substance. Joseph uh preached

  14. on on a wonderful lesson there that kind

  15. of coincided about the fathers and

  16. children uh aspect of it. Uh but we're

  17. going to continue in our series of

  18. shadows of substance this morning. And

  19. I'm trying to figure out how to end this

  20. series. I've been doing this one since I

  21. know uh there's a lot. Uh so I've been

  22. trying to figure out how to kind of

  23. close this one out. Uh Case and I were

  24. having that discussion last night and

  25. there's still several more that I'm

  26. trying to debate on. So if y'all have

  27. any ideas of how long y'all want this

  28. one to go, I can keep going till

  29. probably 2027. I'm not sure yet. But

  30. y'all know how about series of lessons.

  31. I love my series of lessons. Uh but I as

  32. we get our minds focused uh we we think

  33. about

  34. all in this series about how God has

  35. always been a teacher, hasn't he? And

  36. one of the ways that he teaches is he

  37. takes everyday things and and fills them

  38. with eternal meaning. He fills them with

  39. eternal significance, doesn't he?

  40. And for this morning's lesson, you know,

  41. we've been talking about person to

  42. person uh sometimes person to thing and

  43. and things to just all sorts of

  44. different avenues that we've looked

  45. shadows uh to substance

  46. from the Old Testament all the way to

  47. the New. And the ones that we're going

  48. to be considering this morning is

  49. bread and water.

  50. bread and water that actually are a type

  51. and shadow of Christ.

  52. And as I was thinking about this, and

  53. you've heard lessons on on these types

  54. of of things before, I'm sure. Uh bread

  55. and water, they're they're ordinary. I

  56. think we would agree with that. They're

  57. ordinary. They're common. They're quite

  58. familiar to us. Uh simple, I believe.

  59. But I also would I think you would agree

  60. with me that that even though as common

  61. and as simple and familiar as bread and

  62. water is to us that they are also

  63. essential.

  64. Without bread,

  65. strength fades.

  66. Without water, life itself collapses.

  67. So it should not be a surprise to us

  68. that the Lord repeatedly uses bread and

  69. water as actual pictures of salvation.

  70. In the wilderness, taking us back some

  71. time. In the wilderness, Israel learned

  72. a hard lesson. Deliverance from Egypt

  73. did not mean that they could live

  74. without daily dependence on God.

  75. They were free, but they were not yet

  76. home, right? They were redeemed, but

  77. they were still on a journey. And on

  78. that journey, God provided two things

  79. they could not create for themselves.

  80. And what was that? Bread from heaven and

  81. water from the rock. Y'all remember

  82. those?

  83. I submit to you, those were not random

  84. miracles.

  85. They were shadows. Sometimes we miss

  86. that. Sometimes we do. Now, Paul tells

  87. us the wilderness accounts. They were

  88. examples. I want you to go to 1

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  89. Corinthians chapter 10. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  90. chapter 10, I want to notice verse 6 and

  91. verse 11. There's a whole lot that's

  92. actually packed into chapter 10. I tried

  93. to break it down just a little bit for

  94. time sake this morning, but I would

  95. encourage you to read all of chapter 10.

  96. There's a lot there. I'm going to try to

  97. give you a little bit here from these

  98. particular verses even is in 1

  99. Corinthians chap 10 6 and then 11. Look

  100. at this. Now these things became our

  101. examples to the intent that we should

  102. not lust after evil things as they also

  103. lusted. He's pointing back. Okay, he's

  104. pointing back as I was mentioned in the

  105. wilderness. Now verse 11. Now all these

  106. things happened to them as examples and

  107. they were written for our admonition

  108. upon whom the ends of the ages have

  109. come. Now you go on and and and back up

  110. a little bit verses 1-4 now. So he's

  111. saying these things are examples. Look

  112. at verse 1-4. Moreover, brethren, I do

  113. not want you to be unaware that all our

  114. fathers were under the cloud. All passed

  115. through the sea. They all were baptized

  116. into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

  117. And all ate the same spiritual food and

  118. all drank the same spiritual drink. For

  119. they drank of that spiritual rock that

  120. followed them. And that rock was Christ.

  121. What I was meant to is look all the

  122. shadows that's found its substance in

  123. the New Testament. That's what he's

  124. doing. The rock was Christ. In other

  125. words, the Old Testament is not just

  126. history. It's preparation.

  127. Don't lose sight of that. I think we

  128. have noted a lot in this series

  129. these types and shadows that point to

  130. this.

  131. So, we're going to walk through these

  132. shadows of bread and water in the Old

  133. Testament, and we're going to see how

  134. Jesus in the New Testament stands as the

  135. substance of the true bread and the

  136. living water. Let's go with bread from

  137. heaven in the wilderness to start us

  138. off. Now, again, this bread from heaven

  139. uh in the wilderness, that was a shadow

  140. of Christ. I want you to go to Exodus

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  141. chapter 16. Let's go back to Exodus

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  142. chapter 16 for a moment.

  143. In Exodus chapter 16,

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  144. then the children of Israel are newly

  145. freed. Uh but now they are hungry. We

  146. kind of know how this goes, right? Uh

  147. their stomachs, they begin to speak

  148. louder than their faith. Can we put it

  149. that way? Maybe. Uh they complain. And

  150. here's what they say in verse three.

  151. They said to them, "Oh, that we have

  152. died by the hand of the Lord in the land

  153. of Egypt when we sat by the pots of meat

  154. and we ate bread to the full for you

  155. have brought us out into this wilderness

  156. to kill this whole assembly with

  157. hunger." Sounds quite dramatic, doesn't

  158. it? Right? Uh sometimes I think that's

  159. how my kids sound, you know? uh uh we we

  160. get that way ourselves, don't we? Let's

  161. be honest about it. So, it it's amazing

  162. though that when you look at it, how

  163. quickly the people can forget the chains

  164. of Egypt when the wilderness gets

  165. uncomfortable.

  166. That's what happened.

  167. There's a lot of lessons in that for us.

  168. Yet, God does not answer their grumbling

  169. with thunder, does he? How does God

  170. answer? Well, if you remember this quite

  171. familiar, look at verse four. Then the

  172. Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain

  173. bread from heaven for you, and the

  174. people shall go out and gather a certain

  175. quota every day that I may test them

  176. whether they will walk in my law or

  177. not."

  178. This is quite amazing. All right. Every

  179. morning, mana appears.

  180. Love it. They gather it, they eat it,

  181. and they live.

  182. Now,

  183. you ever notice the the lessons that are

  184. all in this one verse and this whole

  185. situation here going on what this mana

  186. is designed to teach them? It's pretty

  187. interesting. First of all, I think the

  188. first one we see is the source.

  189. The source, it came from above. Y'all

  190. see that?

  191. One of the things noted, it wasn't

  192. produced by Israel's strength. They're

  193. on a journey, right? They're in the

  194. wilderness. They didn't produce this by

  195. their own strength. They didn't plan it

  196. and they didn't earn it. A gift.

  197. Oh, you're like, you don't get ahead of

  198. me yet. Y'all are trying to. I'm sure

  199. y'all like I see where you're going. God

  200. fed them because they were helpless and

  201. they were hopeless without him. And

  202. that's exactly the point that Jesus was

  203. making in John chapter 6, wasn't it? Go

    John 6 chapter mention

  204. to John chapter 6. Look at verses 31 and

    John 6 chapter mention

  205. then verse 32 as well. Look at this. Our

  206. fathers ate mana in the desert as is

  207. written. He gave them bread from heaven

  208. to eat. Well, what does he do in verse

  209. 32? Jesus said to them, most assurely I

  210. say to you, Moses did not give you the

  211. bread from heaven, but my father gives

  212. you the true bread from heaven. There we

  213. go. Jesus is bringing the shadow into

  214. the light. He's saying, I'm the

  215. substance.

  216. Read on.

  217. For the bread of God is he who comes

  218. down from heaven and gives life to the

  219. world. Then they said to him, "Lord,

  220. give us this bread always." And Jesus

  221. said to them, "I am the bread of life.

  222. He who comes to me shall never hunger,

  223. and he who believes in me shall never

  224. thirst." That was our scripture reading

  225. this morning, wasn't it? Mana came down

  226. each morning. And Jesus came down from

  227. where? What's verse 38? Go to verse 38,

  228. John 6. Look at it. For I have come down

  229. from heaven not to do my own will but

  230. the will of him who sent me.

  231. Wow. Jesus came down from heaven.

  232. Mana sustained their bodies

  233. and Jesus sustains the soul.

  234. And it's all connected to the one true

  235. source that is the Lord.

  236. Powerful, right?

  237. What about number two that we'd say?

  238. What else do we learn from this? The

  239. nature,

  240. it was sufficient.

  241. Now, if you notice when you think back

  242. to Exodus, the command that was given in

  243. Exodus chapter 16 of how they were I'm

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  244. going to let me just kind of scroll back

  245. over there to that verse. You know, the

  246. people shall go out and gather a certain

  247. quota every day. All right? And there's

  248. a test that's going on here. Now, as you

  249. kind of go through that passage, God God

  250. didn't just give them enough to survive.

  251. He gave enough to sustain them.

  252. Day after day, the bread was there.

  253. When they were weak, he provided

  254. strength.

  255. Isn't that what Jesus does? Does Jesus

  256. do the same thing? You're interested in

  257. John chapter 6. Let me let me show you

    John 6 chapter mention

  258. in verse 35 again. What does verse 35

  259. say again?

  260. He who comes to me shall never

  261. hunger.

  262. See that has the idea again of

  263. sustaining

  264. sustaining.

  265. Now as we saw in Exodus 16 verse4 there

  266. was a limit.

  267. limit. Uh the word quota was kind of

  268. given there, wasn't it? M mana though

  269. understanding we're thinking back in

  270. exception that bread that they were

  271. receiving in Exodus that couldn't give

  272. eternal life. All right. Uh here here's

  273. the hard truth that Jesus states plainly

  274. in John chapter 6. You're still there?

    John 6 chapter mention

  275. Look at verse 49.

  276. Your fathers ate the mana in the

  277. wilderness and are dead. I mean there it

  278. is. Mana was good but it was temporary.

  279. It could not conquer death. It could not

  280. cleanse sin. It could not transform the

  281. heart. It was exactly as we see in this

  282. series of lessons is it's a shadow and

  283. it was pointing forward to the one who

  284. could do it.

  285. So I I want to submit to you something

  286. here. The world offers and I'm going to

  287. put in quotes air quotes bread.

  288. They offer bread. The world offers bread

  289. that satisi satisfies for a moment. Some

  290. people have called, you know, these kind

  291. of things. They sometimes have used the

  292. idea of money is they call it bread

  293. sometimes. That's a slang that's used.

  294. And you know, you can use that for

  295. anything, money or entertainment or

  296. success or pleasure. But here's the

  297. thing about the world's bread is it

  298. never satisfies.

  299. It never fully fills. It never does any

  300. of that. It is still a gaping hole in

  301. the heart and the spirit. The whole it

  302. never fills the soul. Never does.

  303. The point that Jesus is making is that

  304. Christ himself is the only bread that

  305. fully fills and satisfies.

  306. Now, what's that point us to?

  307. Jesus makes a like I said John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  308. lot here that we're seeing

  309. but he's saying this very point about

  310. daily dependence these are these are

  311. lessons that we we grasping from old

  312. testament of the shadows

  313. physical bread and spiritual faith let's

  314. talk about that for a moment the mana

  315. was not just about food did we ever

  316. catch that when we're reading that in

  317. Exodus chapter 16 it wasn't really just

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  318. all about food although That was

  319. certainly helpful, right? But it

  320. ultimately was about trust.

  321. It was about trust because here's the

  322. thing about the uh when you look at

  323. Exodus 16 19 and 20, the commands that

  324. were given, Moses said, "Let no one

  325. leave any of it till morning."

  326. Notwithstanding, they did not heed

  327. Moses. We we know how they were very

  328. stubborn people. And again, we might

  329. have some things familiar common with

  330. them. But some of them left part of it

  331. until morning and bread worms and stank

  332. and Moses was angry with them. So as as

  333. you're catching up here thinking about

  334. this, well God commanded them to gather

  335. it daily, right?

  336. If they tried to hoard it, it spoiled.

  337. That's what it means when it worms and

  338. stank. Okay? They were hoarding it.

  339. That's not what God wanted them to do.

  340. The lesson was simple. You don't live by

  341. yesterday's bread. You don't live by

  342. yesterday's.

  343. You trust God daily. Today, think about

  344. Jesus prayer. [clears throat] Y'all mind

  345. think about Jesus prayer? Matthew 6:1.

    Matthew 6:1

  346. Give us this day our daily bread.

  347. See, here's what I want us to think

  348. about.

  349. We have opportunities today, right now.

  350. This morning, we had Bible class.

  351. Opportunities. Our children learning

  352. in here. the adult class. We had that

  353. this morning. We have this morning

  354. worship service. We have the singing. We

  355. have prayers. We have a miracle of the

  356. Lord's supper. We have all sorts of

  357. scriptures. We're using of of studying

  358. the Bible right now in this lesson,

  359. right? We got a lot that we're engaged

  360. in, a lot of our minds put into gears,

  361. you know. Then what else do we have?

  362. Well, tonight, Lord's willing, we back

  363. together and we'll have another service,

  364. right? Wednesday, Lords, we'll have

  365. another time together Bible study,

  366. right? Then it here's my point that I'm

  367. saying Christianity is not a once a week

  368. snack.

  369. It's not

  370. that's not what Christianity is. It is

  371. daily dependence.

  372. I believe the point is abundantly clear

  373. in what we read and study from the

  374. scriptures is that one cannot survive

  375. spiritually on last year's zeal.

  376. Man, I sure was zealous last year.

  377. You can't live on that one. You can't

  378. you can't sustain on that one. You can't

  379. you can't survive on last month's prayer

  380. life either. And you can't survive on

  381. last Sunday's sermon. If you can

  382. remember what last Sunday's sermon was,

  383. I could start testing right now. Let

  384. start flipping my notes real quick.

  385. Right? See, that's what happens. We got

  386. a daily bread daily.

  387. And we can't survive on yesterday's

  388. Bible study either.

  389. Just as Israel had to go out each

  390. morning, each time, God calls us to feed

  391. on Christ every day. How do we do it?

  392. Well, what did Jesus say when he was

  393. being tempted in Matthew chapter 4?

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  394. Remember that he said, "It is written,

  395. man shall not live by bread alone, but

  396. by every word that proceeds from the

  397. mouth of God."

  398. Jesus himself said, "That is what

  399. sustains us every single day.

  400. through his word, through prayer,

  401. through obedience, through worship,

  402. through faithful living. All of those go

  403. hand in hand, don't they?

  404. Now, I want us to ask ourselves the

  405. question, am I living on something I've

  406. stored up?

  407. Or is it true daily relationship?

  408. Remember, mana spoiled when it was

  409. hoarded.

  410. Faith spoils when it's neglected.

  411. And that happens more times than we'd

  412. like to admit.

  413. Let's talk about water.

  414. Water from the rock. This is another

  415. shadow of Christ, isn't it?

  416. >> Now, if hunger is severe,

  417. thirst is deadly. Look at look at uh

  418. Exodus 17. So, we we see parts of Exodus

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  419. chapter 16. Pretty powerful stuff going

  420. on there. You know, you got the

  421. complainers and all that stuff. Well,

  422. what do you think happens in Exodus

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  423. chapter 17? Repeat. It's just something

  424. different. Okay. All and the pe uh first

  425. I'm sorry, Exodus chapter 17 3-7. I must

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  426. not put that one up there already.

  427. So, go to Exodus chapter 17 3-7. I must

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  428. have skipped that one on my handouts

  429. there in my charts. Exodus chapter 17

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  430. 3-7.

  431. Let's read together.

  432. And the people thirsted there for water.

  433. And the people complained against Moses

  434. and said, "Why is it you have brought us

  435. up out of Egypt to kill us and our

  436. children and our livestock with thirst?"

  437. So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying,

  438. "What shall I do with this people? They

  439. are almost ready to stone me." And the

  440. Lord said to Moses, "Go on before the

  441. people and take with you some of the

  442. elders of Israel. Also take in your hand

  443. your rod with which you struck the river

  444. and go. Behold, I will stand before you

  445. there on the rock in Ore. And you shall

  446. strike the rock, and water will come out

  447. of it that the people may drink. And

  448. Moses did so in the sight of the elders

  449. of Israel. So he called the name of the

  450. place Massa and Meabah because of the

  451. contention of the children of Israel and

  452. because they tempted the Lord, saying,

  453. "Is the Lord among us or not?" Now,

  454. Israel had no water. You know, they had

  455. the bread issue. They ain't going to

  456. water. They quarrel. This is kind of a

  457. repeat, as I said earlier. And and what

  458. do they automatically do? Well, they're

  459. going to accuse Moses.

  460. They test God. And God commands Moses to

  461. strike the rock. Water pours out. The

  462. rock becomes one of the clearest Christ

  463. foreshadows in the Bible.

  464. Clearest. When you look at 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  465. chapter 10, I do have that one before

  466. you in 1 Corinthians chapter 10:es 3-6.

  467. This is what we were noting a moment

  468. ago, weren't we? When he said, "And the

  469. people thirsted there for water." And

  470. the people complained against Moses

  471. said, "Why is it you have brought us up

  472. out of Egypt to kill us and our

  473. children, our livestock with thirst?" We

  474. just read that in Exodus 17, didn't we?

  475. There it is.

  476. And if you notice there that he said, "I

  477. will stand before you there on the rock

  478. in Horeb and you shall strike the rock

  479. and their water will come out uh that

  480. the people may drink. And Moses did so

  481. in the sight of the elders." That's

  482. actually that that passage I was just

  483. reading. I'm sorry I got most my

  484. scriptures mixed up there. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:4

  485. 10:4 it says, "And all drank the same

  486. spiritual drink, for they drank of that

  487. spiritual rock that followed them, and

  488. that rock was Christ."

  489. So when you look at that of what's being

  490. stated there of what I had before you is

  491. actually from Exodus there chapter 17

  492. and and just listed different with a

  493. title there but in 1 Corinthians 10:4 is

    1 Corinthians 10:4

  494. pointing to this spiritual rock the rock

  495. that was Christ that's the substance

  496. part

  497. now when you think about what all of

  498. that means the rock came from the water

  499. came from unlikely place right

  500. because a rock is not where you go

  501. looking for water. I think we'd agree

  502. with that one.

  503. But what happened in Exodus chapter 17,

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  504. as we read, God brought life from what

  505. looked lifeless.

  506. Is that not exactly what God did at

  507. Calvary?

  508. Life came from a place

  509. that looked like defeat.

  510. Salvation came from suffering.

  511. Hope came from a cross.

  512. Y'all see how that is connected?

  513. So, not only did a water come from an

  514. unlikely place, water came at the moment

  515. of need. The fact of the matter is when

  516. we see in Exodus chapter 17, they were

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  517. desperate just like they said when they

  518. were food. They were desperate for

  519. water.

  520. They were empty. God met them to quench

  521. their thirst. And that's why Jesus says

  522. to the Samaritan woman. He makes this

  523. connection in John chapter 4. Look at

    John 4 chapter mention

  524. John chapter 4 and verse 10. Prove all

    John 4 chapter mention

  525. things according to God's word, not

  526. DJ's.

  527. Y'all see how I got the charts mixed up

  528. a little bit ago? prove all things

  529. according to his word. John 4:10,

    John 4:10

  530. Jesus answered and said to her, "If you

  531. knew the gift of God and who it is who

  532. says to you, give me a drink, you would

  533. have asked him and he would have given

  534. you living water."

  535. What is Jesus telling her?

  536. He's saying

  537. that he is not a water source.

  538. He's telling her he is living water.

  539. Now that water in the wilderness that

  540. was temporary cuz the fact is you go

  541. through the scriptures that they drank

  542. and you know what happened later on as

  543. you go and you read about their

  544. wanderings? They thirsted again.

  545. That miracle sustained him physically,

  546. but it didn't remove spiritual thirst.

  547. In John chapter 4, I want you to read in

    John 4 chapter mention

  548. verses 13 and 14 as well. John 14 uh

  549. John chapter 4 13 and 14.

    John 4 chapter mention

  550. Jesus talking there at the woman at the

  551. well. He says, "Whoever drinks of this

  552. water will thirst again, but whoever

  553. drinks of the water that I shall give

  554. him will never thirst. But the water

  555. that I shall give him will become in him

  556. a fountain of water springing up into

  557. everlasting life. You see, some are

  558. trying to quench thirst

  559. with sinful wells. That's what I call

  560. them. Sinful wells.

  561. Think about that. Relationships

  562. of of of addiction, pride, anger,

  563. materialism. But those wells never

  564. satisfy. They do not fill the void. Only

  565. Jesus provides the water that becomes

  566. what do he say? A fountain into

  567. everlasting life. Because those sinful

  568. wells that that Jesus is talking about

  569. regarding uh this water, he said you

  570. drink of this water, you're going to

  571. thirst again there at the well. So when

  572. you make an application,

  573. he's saying you can be involved in all

  574. sorts of things of this world and guess

  575. what? It's never going to quench. It's

  576. never going to satisfy. It's never going

  577. to fill

  578. because those things don't translate

  579. into eternity. They don't.

  580. But Jesus does.

  581. I shall give him this water,

  582. living water that he is will become in

  583. him a fountain of water spring up into

  584. everlasting life. That translates into

  585. eternal life.

  586. So, we're taking bread and water and I'm

  587. I only have a for my time limited this

  588. morning. I'm giving you just quick some

  589. points here from Exodus 16 and 17 and

  590. what we see in several passages in the

  591. New Testament how this type and shadow

  592. and when you look at this wilderness

  593. pattern there's a lot that's in the

  594. wilderness pattern that I could

  595. definitely preach another series on that

  596. one for that matter

  597. between redemption and rest

  598. this is one of the most I I I believe

  599. when you when you consider the typology

  600. that we've been talking about,

  601. this is quite significant

  602. because when you look at Israel's story,

  603. that account that we have recorded for

  604. us in the Old Testament is is a

  605. spiritual map. Have you ever considered

  606. that way? It's a spiritual map.

  607. Like let's let's make some points here.

  608. Egypt represented what? bondage,

  609. captivity

  610. to sin. I want you to consider this

  611. Red Sea. They passed through the Red

  612. Sea. Y'all saw that 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  613. chapter 10. Remember they all passed

  614. through that Red Sea on dry ground to

  615. the other side. What was that called?

  616. Deliverance, wasn't it? Through that

  617. water. That was deliverance by the Red

  618. Sea. By God's power, they did.

  619. What's the wilderness represent?

  620. The journey of faith.

  621. That's the journey of faith.

  622. Where were they heading?

  623. Promised land. What's the promised land

  624. mean to us? That means eternal rest.

  625. You can go through all of those things.

  626. Israel was redeemed, but the fact is

  627. they weren't home yet, were they?

  628. And you know what that means for us?

  629. That's us.

  630. Their story is our story.

  631. We've been redeemed through Christ, but

  632. we've not yet entered heaven,

  633. eternal rest. We We still live in a

  634. world that's full of dryness and hunger.

  635. And we are in the wilderness of

  636. temptation, trials, greed, and spiritual

  637. warfare. And it's a journey of faith.

  638. Well, let me ask you,

  639. what do we need on this journey? You

  640. know what? I'm glad you asked. Bread and

  641. water.

  642. That's exactly what we need. We need

  643. bread and water. And you know who that

  644. bread and water is? It's Jesus Christ

  645. >> because he is the one who sustains us

  646. until we reach home.

  647. I don't want us to misinterpret the

  648. wilderness.

  649. Trials don't mean God abandon us.

  650. What trials represent just as James

    James 1 chapter mention

  651. chapter 1 goes in to talk about as well

  652. is it often means God is training,

  653. teaching and molding us to depend on

  654. him. Is that not what they were needing

  655. in Exodus 16 and 17 and on as they were

  656. journeying in that wilderness?

  657. Dependence upon God.

  658. Absolutely.

  659. Well, friends, let me just mention this

  660. as well. Jesus multiplies bread. And

  661. when he does that, he's he's pointing to

  662. his own body.

  663. Think about this. Jesus fed the

  664. multitudes. Y'all remember that? Feeding

  665. the multitudes. It was not only the

  666. compassion that he had to feed them, but

  667. it was revelation. He was showing

  668. something. He was showing what kind of

  669. savior he is. one who provides.

  670. And John chapter 6, like I said, John 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  671. has a lot and I said read all of that

  672. later on, but John 6, if you notice,

  673. Jesus takes this miracle so much deeper.

  674. In John 6 and verse 51, he says, "I am

  675. the living bread which came down from

  676. heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he

  677. will live forever. And the bread that I

  678. shall give is my flesh which I shall

  679. give for the life of the world.

  680. What bread just became

  681. was a picture of the cross

  682. because bread is broken to be shared

  683. and Jesus body was broken to save us.

  684. Does that tie into anything that we're

  685. thinking of this morning

  686. for the table?

  687. Do this in remembrance of me. Matthew 26

  688. 26. And as they were eating, Jesus took

  689. bread, blessed, and broke it and gave it

  690. to the disciples and said, "Take, eat.

  691. This is my body." It was broken to be

  692. shared

  693. for all.

  694. Representing his body. And the very

  695. first day of the week, as we see from

  696. the scriptures, reminds us that the

  697. bread of life was offered so we could

  698. live.

  699. And every time we take the Lord's

  700. supper, we're declaring my life depends

  701. on his sacrifice. We don't live just by

  702. bread alone, but by every word that

  703. precedes the mouth of God. We live by

  704. the bread of life that translates into

  705. eternity.

  706. And what else can I say about the waters

  707. other than this is the open invitation.

  708. Come to the waters.

  709. Isaiah 55 is one of the most beautiful I

  710. I'd say invitations in the Old

  711. Testament. And we see it repeatedly.

  712. Isaiah 55. And notice verses 1 and two.

  713. Isaiah 551 and two.

  714. Oh, everyone who thirsts, come to the

  715. waters. And you who have no money, come,

  716. buy and eat. Yes, come buy wine and milk

  717. without money and without price. Why do

  718. you spend money for what is not bread

  719. and your wages for what does not

  720. satisfy?

  721. Listen carefully to me and eat what is

  722. good and let your soul delight itself in

  723. abundance.

  724. Y'all ever notice that invitation is

  725. used?

  726. He says it's free. It's without money.

  727. It's urgent. It's satisfying. And it's

  728. lifegiving. And it's life sustaining.

  729. Jesus echoes Isaiah's invitation in the

  730. New Testament passage of John 7 and

  731. verse 37.

  732. On the last day, that great day of the

  733. feast, Jesus stood and cried out,

  734. saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come

  735. to me and drink."

  736. Look at the connection we have from

  737. Isaiah 55 to Jesus himself who is the

  738. living water of John 7:37.

    John 7:37

  739. The point that's being made is salvation

  740. although freely given

  741. must be received God's way and that's

  742. through obedient faith. That's exactly

  743. what we say.

  744. a lot of things that we see in the

  745. scriptures.

  746. And as I have given yet again, we have

  747. the charts front and back. You have

  748. those in the back. There's some more

  749. copies. I know the other ones went

  750. pretty quick this morning, handouts, but

  751. in the back, you'll also see a handout

  752. that's front and back. I usually put

  753. these on the chart as well. It's just

  754. hard to see them before you. A lot of

  755. the Old Testament shadow, New Testament,

  756. that is substance that is Jesus. And of

  757. course, the scripture references that go

  758. along with that. a lot of what we've

  759. looked at. There's other uh passages

  760. there that you'll also consider. Take

  761. those copies, go home and study those

  762. even further. The front the one of the

  763. pages that has to do with the man of the

  764. bread that we talked about this morning

  765. and the second one has to do with the

  766. shadowing substance that is the water

  767. that we also considered uh briefly this

  768. morning.

  769. The mana was good

  770. but again it could not give eternal

  771. life. The water from the rock was

  772. miraculous, but it couldn't remove sin.

  773. What were all these things that we

  774. talked about this morning? Exactly that.

  775. They were shadows and they were

  776. substance. the shadows that led to the

  777. substance that is Jesus,

  778. the physical

  779. uh bread and water, the temporary

  780. provisions, the shadow of the sustained

  781. Israel in the wilderness, the required

  782. daily gathering. And what did all those

  783. things mean right there? The substance

  784. is spiritual life in Christ, eternal

  785. satisfaction sustains Christians on the

  786. journey to heaven and requires daily

  787. faith and obedience. all of those right

  788. there.

  789. I'm asking this

  790. morning

  791. and our invitation,

  792. are you hungry for something more than

  793. this world can offer?

  794. Are you thirsty for a peace that does

  795. not fade away?

  796. Are you hungry for forgiveness?

  797. Are you tired of chasing satisfaction

  798. that never lasts? All those wells of the

  799. world.

  800. Jesus is the bread of life and Jesus is

  801. the living water. And Jesus says, "Come

  802. to me."

  803. That's the invitation that he still

  804. gives today.

  805. And you can have that just as we saw in

  806. those scriptures. And it's God's plan of

  807. salvation. It's going to be received on

  808. his terms, not mine and not yours. It's

  809. on his. You believe that Jesus Christ is

  810. the son of God. If you say yes, I

  811. believe that he is. You do something

  812. about that. You come to him. He says,

  813. "You come to me. Those that are weary

  814. and heavy laden, and I will give you

  815. rest." That's in Matthew chap 11, isn't

  816. it? And you know what? We believe. We

  817. repent of our sins. We confess him to be

  818. the son of living God. And we are

  819. immersed. We are buried in baptism to

  820. rise and walk in newness of life.

  821. And as we rise from that watery grave in

  822. newness of life, as Romans 6:3 and4

    Romans 6:3

  823. says, we're fed by the by the by the

  824. bread of life and we are refreshed by

  825. the living water. And we rise again to

  826. begin a life sustained by the one who

  827. never runs dry.

  828. You can do that this morning. You can be

  829. washed in the blood right now. cleansed

  830. from that old sinful ways. How thankful

  831. we are of all the shadows that have

  832. pointed us to Jesus Christ, the

  833. righteous, the substance that he is.

  834. If you're already a disciple of Christ,

  835. a Christian, and and maybe trying to

  836. live on spiritual leftovers, don't work

  837. that way. Realize that you come back to

  838. the table because the bread of life

  839. still satisfies and you can do that. We

  840. we pray on your behalf. love to help you

  841. in any way we possibly can. Whatever

  842. your spiritual need,

  843. you can come. As we stand, as we sing

  844. the song that's been selected for us,
