  1. This morning we are continuing in our

  2. series Shadows to Substance. And I I

  3. have looked at, like I said, several

  4. other lessons that we'll be considering

  5. before we bring this less this series to

  6. a close. And I certainly do appreciate

  7. the encouragement that I've been given

  8. to continue this series. So, uh, as

  9. we've noted throughout this series,

  10. again, from the beginning, God has, uh,

  11. been teaching us through shadows. A lot

  12. of shadows, I believe we'd agree so far.

  13. Uh, and those shadows are temporary

  14. pictures that are pointing forward to

  15. something greater. We have noted that.

  16. And as we continue, we are reminded that

  17. every shadow finds its meaning, its very

  18. fulfillment in Jesus Christ. So from the

  19. opening pages of scripture, God is

  20. presented as a God who leads his people

  21. somewhere. You ever notice that he's

  22. always leading his people somewhere? He

  23. does not simply deliver them from

  24. danger. He delivers them to a

  25. destination. And salvation in the Bible

  26. is it's never just about leaving or

  27. escaping or anything like that. It's

  28. about arrival.

  29. So friends, one of the most comforting

  30. truths in the Bible is that God never

  31. saves his people from something

  32. without also saving them to something.

  33. And I believe we're going to see that

  34. this morning in our lesson in this

  35. shadows to substance

  36. part whatever number it might be

  37. entitled Canaan and heaven.

  38. Now,

  39. God has shown us as our minds will

  40. certainly reflect and we'll look at

  41. these passages that will take us first

  42. to Genesis chapter 12. We noticed some

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  43. of that a moment ago. So, I'd encourage

  44. you to go ahead to Genesis 12

  45. because

  46. we know God has rescued. He has

  47. delivered

  48. certainly,

  49. but again, he's leading his people

  50. somewhere. And that's why the story of

  51. of Israel is so powerful because in the

  52. Old Testament, God's people were

  53. delivered from Egypt and they were led

  54. toward a place called Canaan. And what

  55. we'll find of course in this is again

  56. reminding ourselves even that Canaan is

  57. a promised land, a prepared land, an

  58. inherited land. But as wonderful as

  59. Canaan was, it was never the final goal.

  60. And Canaan was simply again as we'll

  61. talk about that shadow. It was a

  62. goddesigned picture that portrayed that

  63. of a greater promise in that of heaven,

  64. the eternal rest and the home of the

  65. redeemed. So, as we follow the account

  66. of the promised land, uh the the journey

  67. to it, the rest that's found there, the

  68. warning of of those who who never

  69. entered, and the way God used all of

  70. that to point us to a greater country,

  71. it's my hope and prayer this morning

  72. that as we walk through this, you'll not

  73. only see the pattern, but I would even

  74. say that you feel the pull of heaven

  75. because God is still leading his people

  76. somewhere.

  77. So, let's talk about Canaan, this land

  78. that was promised by God. Now, you'll

  79. notice that in your studies when you

  80. look and we even talked about Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  81. chapter 12 last Sunday uh morning and

  82. Genesis chapter 12 that that this this

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  83. land of Canaan even really entered the

  84. biblical story, the account if you will,

  85. not as as a human ambition but as a

  86. divine promise because Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  87. 12 tells us that God called Abram out of

  88. and said what? Get out of your country,

  89. from your family, and your and from your

  90. father's house to a land that I will

  91. show you.

  92. Remember we talked about last Sunday. I

  93. will make you a great nation. The Lord

  94. said, he said, I will bless you and make

  95. your name great, and you shall be a

  96. blessing. I will bless those who bless

  97. you, and I will curse him who curses

  98. you, and in you all the families of the

  99. earth shall be blessed.

  100. You see, that's the thing. Abram didn't

  101. select the place, right? He didn't do

  102. that. Abram wasn't even negotiating the

  103. the the terms as to as to how this is

  104. all going to happen or or the property

  105. that he wanted to have. God simply

  106. promised and God uh when he promised

  107. that Abram obeyed. Now, that's important

  108. because it reminds us that Canaan was

  109. never merely just some type of uh we

  110. might say real estate. Okay, that's not

  111. what it was. It was again as the

  112. scriptures unfold, it was evidence. It

  113. was it's provided to us as evidence of

  114. God's faithfulness.

  115. And over and over again, you know what

  116. the Lord said, and I was going through a

  117. few of these in my study and preparing

  118. the lesson. Uh, one of those I was

  119. thinking about, Genesis 12:7, you read

    Genesis 12:7

  120. on down, you're going to find that the

  121. Lord appeared to Abram and said, "To

  122. your descendants, I will give this

  123. land."

  124. One of the key things I want us to point

  125. out here is I will give. That's God

  126. saying it. I will give. Look in Genesis

  127. 17 and verse 8. That's another one where

  128. you see this. I give to you. Also, I

  129. give to you and your descendants after

  130. you the land in which you are a

  131. stranger. All the land, what's the name

  132. of the land? Canaan.

  133. as an everlasting possession and I will

  134. be their God. Now those are just a

  135. couple of passages I wanted to show you

  136. and emphasize what God was saying. I

  137. will give

  138. I will. He framed the promise in grace.

  139. He gave Israel a future that they didn't

  140. even create. Right

  141. now go to Exodus chapter 3. Now

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  142. following along here. Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  143. God tells Moses that he has heard the

  144. cry of his people and will bring them

  145. out of Egypt. Exodus chapter 3, this is

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  146. where you find that verses seven and 8.

  147. Again, prove all things according to

  148. God's word, not DJs. And the Lord said,

  149. I have surely seen the oppression of my

  150. people who are in Egypt, and I have

  151. heard their cry because of their

  152. taskmasters. For I know their sorrows,

  153. so I have come down to deliver them out

  154. of the hand of the Egyptians. And here

  155. it is to bring them up from that land to

  156. a good and large land to a land flowing

  157. with milk and honey to the place of the

  158. Canaanites and the Hittites and the

  159. Amorites and the Parisites and the

  160. Hivites and the Jebusites.

  161. Y'all notice that he said that he was

  162. going to bring them out of Egypt into a

  163. good and large land, a land flowing with

  164. milk and honey.

  165. Do you ever notice something about this?

  166. That God describes the land as good

  167. before they ever even see it.

  168. And he promises that there's blessings

  169. ahead of the experience. And yet, even

  170. as God promised Canaan, he was also

  171. teaching that the promised land on earth

  172. was not the final hope even. And that's

  173. when you go, let's go to Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  174. 11 for just a moment.

  175. Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  176. And notice in Hebrews chapter 11 that

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  177. that speaking of the hall of faith, then

  178. of course you get down to a Abraham and

  179. and Abraham is is being described by

  180. faith and and and understanding that he

  181. he left his country. He he he obeyed

  182. what God had said for him to do as we

  183. saw from Genesis 12. And it tells that

  184. Abraham lived like a stranger in the

  185. land. What was he doing? He was dwelling

  186. in tents because he was looking beyond

  187. Canaan. Look at the way it said by

  188. faith. Verse eight, by faith Abraham

  189. obeyed when he was called to go out to

  190. the place which he would receive as an

  191. inheritance. And he went out not knowing

  192. where he was going. By faith he dwelt in

  193. the land of promise, as in a foreign

  194. country, dwelling in tents with Isaac

  195. and Jacob, the heirs with him of the

  196. same promise. Look at verse 10.

  197. For he waited for the city which has

  198. foundations,

  199. whose builder and maker is God.

  200. In other words, Abraham lived in the

  201. shadow and all the while he was looking

  202. for the substance.

  203. And I believe there's application in all

  204. of this.

  205. That faith begins

  206. when we do just like we see here in

  207. Hebrews 11 by faith.

  208. When we trust when we believe God's

  209. promise more than the present

  210. circumstances

  211. because that's what Abram had to do

  212. because he left his familiar

  213. surroundings and he went not knowing

  214. where he was going. How how how would we

  215. do that, right?

  216. We plot our journeys out, don't we?

  217. But what Canaan teaches us that God's

  218. people move forward because God has

  219. spoken.

  220. And there's a lot of lessons that we can

  221. certainly get into that for sure, but

  222. time will not allow today to go into

  223. that. So, let's talk about the journey

  224. to Canaan. Okay, this is really what

  225. what I would call a pilgrimage of faith.

  226. a pilgrimage of faith.

  227. Now, you might remember that between

  228. Egypt and Canaan, there was something

  229. else. What was that? It's called a

  230. wilderness. It was a wilderness. And I

  231. would submit to you that the wilderness

  232. is where faith is tested.

  233. Israel's journey teaches us that

  234. salvation, it's not merely an an event.

  235. It's truly a walk. And Israel was

  236. redeemed by blood at Passover. Remember

  237. that? And then they were called to

  238. travel. They were called to follow. They

  239. were called to trust. They were called

  240. to endure.

  241. That passage that was ringing out in my

  242. study was Deuteronomy chapter 8. And I

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  243. wanted to share that one with you this

  244. morning as well. Look at Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  245. chapter 8. And although there's a lot

  246. that certainly Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  247. has, I would encourage you to read that.

  248. Deuteronomy chapter 8 verses 1 through3.

    Deuteronomy 8:1–3

  249. Let's just look at that one.

  250. He says, "Every commandment which I

  251. command you today, you must be careful

  252. to observe

  253. that you may live and multiply and go in

  254. and possess the land which the Lord

  255. swore to your fathers. And you shall

  256. remember that the Lord your God led you

  257. all the way these 40 years in the

  258. wilderness to humble you, test you, to

  259. know what was in your heart, whether you

  260. would keep his commandments or not. So

  261. he humbled you, allowed you to hunger,

  262. fed you with mana, which you did not

  263. know, nor did your fathers know, that he

  264. might make you know that man shall not

  265. live by bread alone, but man lives by

  266. every word that proceeds from the mouth

  267. of the Lord.

  268. You see, Moses explains here that God

  269. used the wilderness to do certain

  270. things, to humble them, to test what was

  271. in their hearts.

  272. And the wilderness revealed whether

  273. Israel would live by faith or by sight.

  274. And friends, that wilderness journey

  275. is actually a mirror of our spiritual

  276. reality.

  277. When we obey the gospel, God delivers us

  278. from bondage and captivity of sin,

  279. but we still travel through a world

  280. that's not our final home. Remember that

  281. song we sing quite often? This world is

  282. not my home.

  283. I'm just passing through.

  284. Because guess what? Although I come up

  285. as a new creation out of the watery

  286. grave of baptism, I've been buried with

  287. Christ to arise and walk in newness of

  288. life as Romans 6 and4 says that I am in

  289. that relationship with God through Jesus

  290. Christ. Guess what? I'm still going to

  291. have temptations and I'm still going to

  292. have trials and I'm still there's still

  293. going to be times of discouragement.

  294. There's going to be spiritual battles on

  295. every corner.

  296. And just as Israel had to keep moving

  297. toward Canaan, Christians must keep

  298. moving toward heaven.

  299. That's why scripture,

  300. and I mean there's a lot that I can show

  301. you, but again, for time's sake, this

  302. stimulates our minds. I'm just going to

  303. give you First Peter 2 11 and 12 is a

  304. prime example. One of these right here,

  305. Peter says to the Christian, "Beloved, I

  306. beg you as what? Sojourers and pilgrims,

  307. abstain from fleshly lust, which war

  308. against the soul, having your conduct

  309. honorable among the Gentiles, that when

  310. they speak against you as evildoers,

  311. they may by your good works which they

  312. observe glorify God in the day of

  313. visitation.

  314. See, we're described the same way. We're

  315. just pilgrims. We're just solders.

  316. And we only have a limited time here

  317. upon this earth

  318. to do what God has called us to do as

  319. his people leading us somewhere.

  320. That's why when you think about what

  321. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:7, for we

    2 Corinthians 5:7

  322. walk by faith and not by sight.

  323. As God's children, we're still on a

  324. journey. See, that baptism, that's not

  325. the end all. That's how we become

  326. members of the body of Christ. We're

  327. added to his church.

  328. You see, the wilderness is not proof.

  329. Some say, "Well, the wilderness, you

  330. know, God failed." No, the wilderness is

  331. is is not proof that God failed. It's

  332. proof that God was shaping

  333. in his infinite wisdom. That's what the

  334. wilderness does.

  335. That's why James 1 talks about cannot

  336. joy when you fall into various trials

  337. because there's rhyme and reason behind

  338. those because that's where growth

  339. occurs.

  340. Some of God's greatest work

  341. happens between deliverance and

  342. destination.

  343. The growth process is beautiful.

  344. Let's talk about Canaan some more about

  345. this land of rest. Some I want to make a

  346. distinction here again. Is it's land of

  347. it's called a land of rest but it's not

  348. perfect rest.

  349. And if you ever notice that when when

  350. Joshua leads Israel into Canaan, the

  351. Bible makes a triumphant statement. If

  352. you go to Joshua chap 21 and look at

  353. verses 43 uh through 45. Joshua chapter

    Joshua 21:43–45

  354. 21

  355. verses 43- 45.

  356. So the Lord gave to Israel all the land

  357. of which he had sworn to give to their

  358. fathers and they took possession of it

  359. and dwelt in it. The Lord gave them rest

  360. all around according to all that he had

  361. sworn to their fathers. And not a man of

  362. all their enemies stood against them.

  363. The Lord delivered all their enemies

  364. into their hand. Not a word failed of

  365. any good thing which the Lord had spoken

  366. to the house of Israel. And it came to

  367. pass.

  368. Think about this. For a people who had

  369. wondered,

  370. this was glorious. I mean, no more

  371. moving tents. That's pretty exciting,

  372. isn't it? No more endless desert. No

  373. more Egyptian chains. They had a home.

  374. You think about what all that meant to

  375. them. You think about cities, vineyards,

  376. fields, all of those things.

  377. But again, the key is this. Canaan was a

  378. rest, but not the ultimate rest.

  379. Even in the promised land, even in the

  380. promised land of Canaan,

  381. they still had enemies.

  382. They still had temptations. They still

  383. had wars. They still There's still sin.

  384. There's still death.

  385. And that's why from our scripture

  386. reading this morning, Hebrews 4 and

  387. verse 8, for if Joshua had given them

  388. rest, then he would not afterward have

  389. spoken of another day.

  390. In other words, the rest that Joshua

  391. provided, yes, it was real,

  392. but it was incomplete

  393. because God's true rest was still ahead.

  394. Here's the shadow.

  395. So what we see is that yes, earthly

  396. blessings, they're they're they're

  397. they're real and we should certainly

  398. thank God that we have them, but none of

  399. them are final.

  400. Even the best Canaan here on this earth,

  401. and we could classify that as whether we

  402. have health or or or home, success,

  403. whatever on the worldly standard or

  404. worldly stage for that matter, still has

  405. sorrows of some sort attached to it.

  406. The heart was made for a better rest.

  407. See, and it takes that physical stuff.

  408. It says that's, you know, we're got to

  409. look at the spiritual side here

  410. because the land of Canaan, as we've

  411. been noting,

  412. was a type of heaven.

  413. Was a type of heaven.

  414. And what we do is we see really we start

  415. seeing the pattern clearly.

  416. Canaan points forward to heaven in

  417. really a lot of profound ways.

  418. I'll share a few of them. Uh Canaan

  419. first of all was promised and guess

  420. what? Heaven is promised.

  421. God's people move toward Canaan because

  422. God promised it.

  423. Likewise, we as Christians, we move

  424. toward heaven because well, God promised

  425. it. What's John 14 in verse two say?

  426. In my father's house are many mansions.

  427. If it were not so, I would have told

  428. you, I go to prepare a place for you.

  429. Canaan was promised to Abraham's seed.

  430. Heaven is promised to Christ disciples.

  431. What about this one? Canaan was

  432. prepared. Heaven's prepared. We just saw

  433. that in John 14.

  434. Israel entered houses they did not build

  435. and vineyards they did not plant. Yet

  436. heaven is not something we design. It's

  437. something God has prepared. That's again

  438. John 14:2.

    John 14:2

  439. Canaan was inherited.

  440. Heaven is inherited. Israel received

  441. Canaan like an inheritance from God's

  442. promise in heaven is described that same

  443. exact way in 1 Peter 1 and verse three

  444. and four. Blessed be the God and father

  445. of our Lord Jesus Christ who according

  446. to his abundant mercy has begotten us

  447. again to a living hope through the

  448. resurrection of Jesus Christ from the

  449. dead to an inheritance incorruptible and

  450. undefiled and that does not fade away

  451. reserved where? In heaven for you.

  452. That's for God's children.

  453. And speaking of that, what else do we

  454. think about how Canaan pointed toward

  455. forward to heaven? Well, I would submit

  456. to you, Canaan required faith and

  457. obedience, and heaven does too.

  458. There it is.

  459. Israel had to follow God's direction.

  460. They had to cross the Jordan.

  461. They had to fight battles. Think think

  462. about that with, you know, I mean,

  463. there's a lot of examples that I I was

  464. considering,

  465. but what about the battle that they went

  466. forward?

  467. Call of Joshua, right? What do he want

  468. them to do? Remember the walls of

  469. Jericho? That was a pretty big one,

  470. wasn't it? Not a way. Not not those

  471. walls weren't going to fall according

  472. the way man. They had to they had to do

  473. what God directed them to do. March

  474. around seven times, right? They had all

  475. these things that were God said for them

  476. to do and those walls would fall.

  477. But they had to obey

  478. his commands.

  479. That's just one of many that you find

  480. that they had to have faith and

  481. obedience.

  482. So how do we apply that even today?

  483. Heaven is not entered through casual

  484. interest, right?

  485. It means we have invested interest. And

  486. if you have an invested interest in

  487. something, you're going to your time is

  488. going to be used a lot more wisely.

  489. You're going to prioritize.

  490. So yeah, heaven's not a casual interest.

  491. It's not empty words. It's through faith

  492. that obeys

  493. because we think about that place of

  494. rest that Canaan was and that's what

  495. heaven is considered but heaven is the

  496. final rest as from our scripture this

  497. morning we read verse eight a moment ago

  498. or verse uh verse eight of Hebrews 4

  499. there remains therefore a rest for the

  500. people of God verse 9 there remains

  501. for he who has entered his rest has

  502. himself also ceased from his works as

  503. God did from his

  504. Canaan, you know, thinking about the

  505. journey that they were on and all the

  506. way back, thinking about Egyptian

  507. captivity, it gave rest from Pharaoh and

  508. and all of those types of things. Heaven

  509. heaven gives rest from sin, sorrow,

  510. death, and the devil forever. Friends,

  511. God has always trained his people with

  512. visible promises to strengthen them for

  513. invisible ones. Let that sink in for a

  514. second. Canaan was God saying, "You can

  515. trust me to keep my word through from

  516. the very beginning of the opening pages

  517. of the Bible and we go all the way

  518. through it. His character unfolds before

  519. us and it shows us exactly

  520. who God is.

  521. that he is true, that he is faithful.

  522. And friends, if thinking about how that

  523. all unfolded from Canaan, we can

  524. certainly trust him about heaven.

  525. Again, there's a lot

  526. to both of these

  527. and the shadows that the shadow that

  528. Canaan certainly is.

  529. But I want to share with you something

  530. that's already I've already mentioned.

  531. But I want us to look at this solemn

  532. warning

  533. that we need to take seriously as well

  534. about those who failed to enter Canaan.

  535. That one of the most sobering truths in

  536. the Old Testament is that many

  537. Israelites who left Egypt never entered

  538. Canaan.

  539. And a question might rise, well, why?

  540. Why didn't they?

  541. Well, Hebrews chapter 3 gives us again

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  542. some insight. I mean, it's re re

  543. recollecting obviously from the Old

  544. Testament. But Hebrews chapter 3 16-19

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  545. speaks of this. For who having heard

  546. rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who

  547. came out of Egypt led by Moses? Now with

  548. him, who

  549. was he angry 40 years? Was it not with

  550. those who sinned, whose corpses fell in

  551. the wilderness? And to whom did he swear

  552. that they would not enter his rest, but

  553. to those who did not obey?

  554. So, we see that they could not enter in

  555. because of unbelief.

  556. Here's something I want us to just grab

  557. a hold of as well.

  558. They saw miracles.

  559. They heard God's voice. They ate mana.

  560. They drank water from the rock.

  561. And still they hardened their hearts.

  562. Hebrews uses Israel as a warning to

  563. Christians.

  564. Don't drift. Don't harden your heart.

  565. Don't stop believing. Don't trade the

  566. promise for the present.

  567. That's the problem that we have. There's

  568. so many just

  569. Hebrews 4:1 says, "Let us therefore or

    Hebrews 4:1

  570. be diligent to enter that rest, lest

  571. anyone fall according to the same

  572. example of disobedience. He's referring

  573. back to the days of old.

  574. It is possible to start the journey and

  575. fail to finish if faith dies.

  576. Friends, the question is not merely,

  577. have you left Egypt? The question is,

  578. are you still walking toward home?

  579. When we speak of home, the only way that

  580. I think I could end this lesson is

  581. basically off the point about heaven

  582. is a true and final rest.

  583. That's the substance that Canaan was

  584. pointing us to.

  585. Friends, we lift our eyes from the

  586. shadow to the substance. And heaven is

  587. not simply we say, well, it's a better

  588. version of Canaan. That's that's not it.

  589. Okay? Heaven is the end of everything

  590. that hurts.

  591. Revelations 21:es 3 and 4. You know, we

  592. were studying the book of Revelation,

  593. our adult Bible class recently. Uh, and

  594. the last thinking about what's what's

  595. stated in these last chapters, but

  596. chapter 21:es 3 and 4. And I heard a

  597. loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold,

  598. the tabernacle of God is with men, and

  599. he will dwell with them, and they shall

  600. be his people. God himself will be with

  601. them and be their God. And God will wipe

  602. away every tear from their eyes. And

  603. there shall be no more death, nor

  604. sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no

  605. more pain. For the former things have

  606. passed away.

  607. You see, here's a distinction that's

  608. made. Canaan had enemies. Heaven has

  609. none. Canaan had graves. Heaven has

  610. none. CA Canaan could be invaded.

  611. Heaven cannot. Canaan could be lost.

  612. Heaven is secure forever. And that's why

  613. you spend time in the scriptures and you

  614. look at this wonderful design and what

  615. it's all pointing toward like 2

  616. Corinthians 5 and verse one, what Paul

  617. says, "For we know that if our earthly

  618. house," he's talking about our bodies.

  619. He's talking about our physical tents.

  620. This tent is destroyed. We have a

  621. building from God, a house not made with

  622. hands, eternal in the heavens.

  623. He's saying that's home. If you lose

  624. something here, yeah, it hurts, but for

  625. the Christian, nothing is lost forever.

  626. Heaven makes grief bearable and faith

  627. worthwhile.

  628. And what kind of encouragement do we

  629. certainly need from lessons like this

  630. is, friends, we need to live today as

  631. people that are actually headed home.

  632. Because I I look at the Israelites and

  633. as much as we might, you know, cast

  634. stones at them and say, "I don't know

  635. what's wrong with these people." They

  636. saw they whine and, you know, they, you

  637. know, gripe and complain about, "Oh,

  638. we're starving to death out here and yet

  639. here's bread, right? Well, we're

  640. thirsty. Well, here's water came from a

  641. rock." You know,

  642. do we not see ourselves in them?

  643. I think we we we have some things in

  644. common with these folks

  645. because we're on a journey too. But what

  646. they're what what Moses was trying to

  647. get through their heads as well is you

  648. need to live in such a way in this

  649. journey that we actually make it to

  650. Canaan.

  651. That we actually make it there the

  652. promised land.

  653. And since heaven is our Canaan, how

  654. should we live? Well, Philippians 3:20

    Philippians 3:20

  655. and 21 is one of the verses that Paul

  656. says about our citizenship. For our

  657. citizenship is in heaven from which we

  658. also eagerly wait for the Savior, the

  659. Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform

  660. our lowly body that it may be conformed

  661. to his glorious body, according to the

  662. working by which he is able even to

  663. subdue all things to himself.

  664. Do you know what that means? It means

  665. that we must not let Egypt become our

  666. comfort zone. See that that's the

  667. problem that they had back then too. It

  668. means we live we have different values.

  669. We choose holiness over indulgence.

  670. We true faithfulness over popularity.

  671. And yes, that means that we have to go

  672. against the grain of what our culture

  673. says is right and good in their own

  674. eyes.

  675. We have to take truth over convenience.

  676. And we have to choose eternity over

  677. temporary pleasure.

  678. We don't despise blessings here.

  679. But we refuse to confuse them with home.

  680. You know, as that old saying is that

  681. everybody wants to go to heaven, but

  682. nobody wants to go. Now

  683. that's weird, doesn't it? It sounds

  684. weird.

  685. I always wondered if you told that

  686. people of the Israelites said, "Are you

  687. ready to get to Canaan?" And they're

  688. like, "Yeah, you want to we we could be

  689. transported there right now." No.

  690. Why? They were wanting to go back to

  691. Egypt, weren't they? They weren't

  692. willing to go through those things that

  693. shaped them and forwarded them.

  694. Friends, we live like pilgrims with our

  695. eyes forward.

  696. As a Christian who forgets heaven

  697. will eventually start living like Egypt

  698. isn't so bad.

  699. But a Christian

  700. who keeps heaven in view, keeps focus,

  701. can endure any wilderness.

  702. I've met those Christians who have went

  703. through some terrible, terrible times

  704. and they endured some really bad things

  705. in the wilderness.

  706. But then they teach such valuable

  707. lessons

  708. that the song many times says that we

  709. sing of heaven.

  710. Friends,

  711. Canaan was promised.

  712. Heaven is promised. Canaan was prepared.

  713. Heaven's prepared. Canaan was inherited.

  714. Heaven's inherited. Canaan was rest.

  715. Heaven is eternal rest.

  716. As I have given throughout this series

  717. more charts. I still see some in the

  718. back there. So, I made extra copies. Try

  719. to try to keep up with the Sometimes we

  720. we run out. But, uh, if you'd like if

  721. you if you run out of them, there's no

  722. there's no more that you want to get you

  723. want to get a copy of or have them sent

  724. emailed to you or whatever, let me know

  725. and I'll get them to you. But again,

  726. what a what a massive list that we see

  727. of all the shadows,

  728. all the shadows that Canaan shows us and

  729. the substance that is pointed forward to

  730. heaven.

  731. Because really, let me put all these up

  732. here so you can see them.

  733. Just this small chart of the shadow that

  734. delivered from Egypt, substance

  735. delivered from sin. The shadow journey

  736. through wilderness substance we're

  737. pilgrims through the world. The shadow

  738. is the Jordan crossing. Substance is

  739. death or final transition.

  740. And shadow is earthly rest. And the

  741. substance is eternal rest. Canaan was

  742. the shadow. Heaven is the substance.

  743. Friends, Hebrews 13 and verse14. For

  744. here we have no continuing city,

  745. but we seek the one to come.

  746. What I say at the very beginning of the

  747. lesson, God is still leading his people

  748. somewhere.

  749. I'm asking this morning, are you still

  750. in Egypt, which is representative of

  751. captivity, of sin? Are you wandering in

  752. the wilderness, maybe delaying

  753. obedience, drifting, growing cold?

  754. The promise is still true and the

  755. invitation is still open. And to begin

  756. that journey toward heaven, you say, "I

  757. believe that Jesus Christ is the son of

  758. living God." And if you say, you believe

  759. be like that that Ethiopian unic. Here

  760. is water. What hinders me from being

  761. baptized?

  762. You repent of your sins. You confess

  763. Jesus be the son of God. and you are

  764. baptized, buried with him in baptism to

  765. rise and walk in newness of life. That's

  766. exactly what God's plan of salvation

  767. says.

  768. And you come out of that watery grave to

  769. walk in newness of life. Yep, we're

  770. going to still have temptations. Yep,

  771. we're still going to have trials. We're

  772. still going to have problems.

  773. Yes, we are.

  774. But he's shaping us

  775. because

  776. he doesn't want us to stay the same. He

  777. wants us to grow towards him. And that's

  778. what Canaan what all that teaches us

  779. from the wilderness as well. The Lord

  780. will set our feet on the road that leads

  781. home. What a beautiful, beautiful thing.

  782. The song has been so wonderfully

  783. selected.

  784. Sing to me of heaven.

  785. Is heaven on our minds? I hope it is

  786. because that's the road that we are

  787. traveling towards. It's a beautiful

  788. place that's described in the scriptures

  789. and all the descriptions that's given.

  790. It's very it's that's I I know it's it's

  791. descriptions that we even have a hard

  792. time grasping,

  793. but it's what was given. So, we'd have

  794. some glimpse, some idea of how wonderful

  795. heaven will be. If you have put on the

  796. body of Christ in baptism, you can do

  797. that this morning. All things stand

  798. ready. or a disciple of Christ something

  799. that's a miss in your life again maybe

  800. have become discouraged may you need

  801. prayers on your behalf whatever your

  802. spiritual need won't you come as we

  803. stand and sing the song that's been

  804. selected
