  1. And good evening. Thank you so much for

  2. joining in on this live stream. I know

  3. that there uh were some complications

  4. today with the weather. So due to the

  5. inclement weather that was uh getting

  6. worse, uh we decided to do an online

  7. study. Uh, so I know we haven't done one

  8. of these in quite some time since COVID.

  9. So, I'm still trying to get used to some

  10. of the uh moving around parts of trying

  11. to put the charts on the screen. I even

  12. made uh charts today uh to go with a

  13. lesson as I always do. Uh so, I

  14. encourage you to follow along and again,

  15. thank you for joining in on this uh on

  16. this live stream in a study of God's

  17. word

  18. this evening. I was trying to figure out

  19. what am I going to talk about because

  20. well, for one, uh I had the sermon and

  21. song planned for this evening's worship

  22. service. However, I'm not going to be

  23. doing the songs and and all of that. Uh

  24. just me and a camera for that matter. Uh

  25. but uh I decided to to do the very topic

  26. of the adventure of disciplehip. Now,

  27. this is going to take us to Mark chapter

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  28. 1 and verses 14- 20. And that's Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  29. chapter 1 14-20. I would encourage you

  30. as we go through these few verses in

  31. this brief time together this evening

  32. that you follow along with me and some

  33. of the thoughts that I want to share

  34. with you. This kind of goes hand inand

  35. with a podcast that uh is on the

  36. disciplehip that I do each week. So,

  37. follow along Mark chapter one. And one

  38. of the first things I want to point out

  39. in this lesson is that Christianity was

  40. never meant to be boring. All right. Um

  41. there is a quiet um lie that has slipped

  42. into modern thinking sometimes even into

  43. the church that disciplehip is it's

  44. dull, it's restrictive, it's

  45. predictable.

  46. uh that following Jesus is merely about

  47. sitting and listening and waiting until

  48. heaven.

  49. But when we open the gospel records,

  50. we really don't find boredom. Um what we

  51. do find in a study of the gospels is

  52. movement. You find risk and you also

  53. find radical change.

  54. Christianity, as we see from the

  55. scriptures, is not what we call it's

  56. it's not a spectator sport. Uh it's an

  57. adventure. And in Mark chapter one,

  58. Jesus is not inviting

  59. uh people, especially these these men

  60. that were chosen here to attend a

  61. seminar, to enroll in a class, or to

  62. observe from a distance. uh he issues a

  63. call that disrupts lives.

  64. And those two words that we'll find in

  65. our our reading this evening,

  66. follow me. And when people truly follow

  67. Christ,

  68. life is never the same again. So follow

  69. along with me here. Go to Mark chapter

  70. one. And I want you to notice that in

  71. our first point that I want to make a

  72. second point maybe I guess here is is

  73. this one and that is the adventure

  74. begins with a proclamation. And in Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  75. chapter 1 vers 14 and 15 read with me.

  76. Now after John was put in prison Jesus

  77. came to Galilee preaching the gospel of

  78. the kingdom of God and saying the time

  79. is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is

  80. at hand. to repent and believe in the

  81. gospel.

  82. So really what we find here is yes the

  83. adventure begins with this proclamation

  84. this disciplehip begins with good news

  85. certainly right that's what I see there

  86. um and Jesus begins his ministry not

  87. with condemnation but with proclamation

  88. if you'll notice that in the passage

  89. there he says the time is fulfilled

  90. which means basically God's plan is on

  91. schedule um also So you notice it says

  92. the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Again,

  93. this is verse 15. And what that's saying

  94. is God is stepping into history. But

  95. with all of that in mind, he's saying,

  96. hey, a response is required. And that

  97. means you need to repent and you need to

  98. believe. That has to do with obedience

  99. to the gospel message that is being

  100. proclaimed. Now, the adventure of of

  101. disciplehip

  102. does not begin with self-improvement.

  103. Now bear with me as I say that. What I'm

  104. meaning by that is really at first it

  105. begins with surrender. Um think about

  106. this. Um kind of reminds us of well kind

  107. of the weather that we're dealing with

  108. and bridges that may be closed or shut

  109. down. Now thinking about this from that

  110. standpoint, when a bridge is out, the

  111. sign is not asking for your opinion. Uh

  112. it demands a decision. Now, that means

  113. that you can either turn around or you

  114. can plunge forward. You have a choice in

  115. that. Well, the gospel is the same way.

  116. You don't casually observe it. You

  117. respond to it. And that's the thing

  118. about repentance is being talked about

  119. here. Repentance is not merely feeling

  120. bad. It's about changing direction.

  121. That's the idea of response.

  122. Now, even faith, faith is not mere

  123. agreement. It's actually placing trust

  124. And before Jesus ever says those words I

  125. mentioned earlier, follow me. Before

  126. before he says any of that, what he's

  127. saying is, well, first one needs to

  128. change the direction, one needs to

  129. believe the gospel message. And that

  130. leads me to the next point that I want

  131. to share with you. And that is the

  132. adventure is issued through a personal

  133. call. Now, if you continue on in this

  134. reading, it's very interesting as you go

  135. to verses 16 and 17.

  136. And as he walked by the Sea of Galilee,

  137. he saw Simon and Andrew his brother,

  138. casting a net into the sea, for they

  139. were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them,

  140. "Follow me, and I will make you become

  141. fishers of men."

  142. What's always been striking to me is

  143. that Jesus calls ordinary people. Now,

  144. these men were not scholars. They were

  145. not priests or leaders. They were

  146. working men with callous hands. And we

  147. might also say, well, they had

  148. predictable routines, right?

  149. Jesus does not wait for perfection.

  150. He calls availability.

  151. Now think about this. God does not call

  152. the equipped. He equips the called. Now

  153. we've heard that right throughout life.

  154. That the adventure of disciplehip does

  155. not require greatness.

  156. That's exactly what produces it.

  157. Follow me is a relationship. It's not a

  158. route. And Jesus does not give them a

  159. fiveyear plan or 10-year plan. What he

  160. gives them first and foremost, he gives

  161. them himself. And to follow Christ is

  162. not merely to obey commands. It is to

  163. actually walk with Jesus. Is to walk

  164. with the Lord. Now, you'll notice in

  165. that passage again says, "I will make

  166. you." Do y'all notice that? I will make

  167. you. And what that does is it shows

  168. transformation in God's work. That's his

  169. work. Jesus does not say make yourselves

  170. fishes of men. That's not what he says.

  171. He says I will make you.

  172. Disciplehip then is not a

  173. behavior modification. In that sense, it

  174. is a divine formation. It's what God

  175. calls us to through his holy and divine

  176. will. It's not in ourselves in of

  177. ourselves to do. We have to rely upon

  178. his word to change us. That's why Romans

  179. 12 speaks this very truth. When when

  180. when Paul says in verse one of Romans

  181. 12, I beseech you therefore, brethren,

  182. by the mercies of God to present

  183. yourselves, your bodies a living

  184. sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,

  185. which is your reasonable service. Now

  186. verse two, he says, "And be not

  187. conformed to this world, but be

  188. transformed by the renewing of your

  189. mind, that you may prove that which is

  190. good and so the perfect will of God." It

  191. goes back to that faith. It goes back to

  192. that trust, knowing his way is better

  193. than our way.

  194. Well, with that being said, I would also

  195. submit to you that

  196. from that very passage,

  197. think about the adventure, how it

  198. requires immediate obedience. If you go

  199. on down to verse 18 of our of our text,

  200. it's they immediately left their nets

  201. and followed him. One of the words that

  202. stands out obviously is the word

  203. immediately.

  204. So there's no delays, no negotiations,

  205. no conditions

  206. because delayed obedience is

  207. disobedience. We sometimes tell that to

  208. our kids, right? They did not ask, hey,

  209. what's in this for me? What's the

  210. salary? What where are we going? You

  211. know, what if this doesn't work? It says

  212. they left their nets. And really when

  213. you think about what it means to leave

  214. their nets, it means they left their

  215. livelihood. They left their security and

  216. even their

  217. identity.

  218. Now consider

  219. this that you cannot cling to the dock

  220. and expect to sail.

  221. At some point the ropes must be untied.

  222. And that's the point I believe we see

  223. from these scriptures even is that

  224. disciplehip always cost something.

  225. But what we find from each and every

  226. scripture that we read about disciplehip

  227. is that all although it certainly cost

  228. us something it always leads to

  229. something greater.

  230. Now, here's something else I think we

  231. need to take into account here, and that

  232. is that the adventure of disciplehip

  233. disrupts comfort and familiarity.

  234. You go on down in our text to verses 19

  235. and 20, and I believe that we will

  236. certainly see this as we go on. Verses

  237. 19 and 20, read with me.

  238. When he had gone a little farther from

  239. there, he saw James, the son of Zebedee,

  240. and John his brother, who also were in

  241. the boat mending their nets. And

  242. immediately he called them, and they

  243. left their father, Zebedee, in the boat

  244. with the hired servants, and went after

  245. him.

  246. What I was thinking about in this

  247. passage is following Jesus may separate

  248. you from what feels safe.

  249. When you look at this passage, James and

  250. John left not only nets, but they left

  251. family expectations.

  252. Jesus never teaches us to dishonor

  253. family, but he does demand supreme

  254. loyalty. We certainly see that as Jesus

  255. will continue to teach about him about

  256. the kingdom being first and foremost.

  257. And here's a thought. Anything you must

  258. abandon to follow Christ was never meant

  259. to define you.

  260. Faith often begins where comfort ends.

  261. Think about this. The boat represented

  262. stability. The shore represented safety,

  263. but Jesus represented uncertainty, but

  264. also purpose.

  265. Disciplehip is not reckless.

  266. It is courageous.

  267. Now, let's make this point too

  268. that the adventure is not just about

  269. where you go, but who you become. Again,

  270. look back to the text. what Jesus said,

  271. I will make you become fishers of men.

  272. Now, as I again dwelling on this and and

  273. considering this passage, many times in

  274. in my life and studies and even this

  275. evening as we reflect upon this, when

  276. Jesus says, "I will make you fishers of

  277. men," well, they went from catching fish

  278. to seeking souls.

  279. They went from earning a living to

  280. saving lives. They went from working for

  281. themselves

  282. to working for eternity. They were

  283. putting in the miles and the effort into

  284. that which truly translates into

  285. eternity.

  286. That's what disciplehip does. The chapel

  287. ship changes our priorities, our

  288. purpose, and also our perspective.

  289. Now,

  290. I thought about this as a fisherman. Not

  291. that I am one for certain. I'm not a

  292. fisherman. You can ask my brother about

  293. that. But a fisherman measures success

  294. by what's in the net.

  295. But a disciple measures success

  296. by who has encountered Christ.

  297. Let that kind of resonate there. A

  298. disciple measures success by who has

  299. encountered Christ. And you think about

  300. all the words that Jesus gives about the

  301. work that is before us as disciples. And

  302. it's exciting work and it's it's tough

  303. work. But again, what has that done for

  304. us? It has redirected us to understand

  305. our priorities are different, our

  306. purpose and our perspective. It has made

  307. those changes in our minds and our

  308. hearts because we see something greater

  309. and it leads to something far greater in

  310. Christ. And that leaves us with this

  311. that is the adventure continues today.

  312. Friends, the call has not changed.

  313. Jesus is still saying and echoing from

  314. the pages of Mark chapter 1 in this

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  315. passage that we have considered briefly.

  316. He still says follow me,

  317. repent, believe. My friends, it has to

  318. do with obeying his will, obeying the

  319. gospel.

  320. He is still saying leave what holds you

  321. back.

  322. The only question is not really is is he

  323. calling.

  324. The question is well will we follow.

  325. Consider that heaven

  326. will not be filled with people who

  327. admire Jesus.

  328. Heaven will be filled with those who

  329. follow.

  330. That's what the scriptures teach. And we

  331. have to ask ourselves,

  332. are we true disciples?

  333. Are we actually following him each and

  334. every day? The work that has been set

  335. before us. And again, it certainly is a

  336. an adventure. It really is because I'm

  337. asking the question in this brief lesson

  338. this evening.

  339. Are you ready for the adventure?

  340. Disciplehip is not safe.

  341. It's not predictable

  342. and it's certainly not comfortable.

  343. But I will say this as the scriptures

  344. make abundantly clear,

  345. disciplehip,

  346. the adventure that it brings is

  347. absolutely

  348. worth it. The greatest adventure you

  349. will ever take is not across oceans or

  350. mountains. And those are probably some

  351. wonderful things. And I've been in the

  352. oceans and I've been in the mountains

  353. and those are quite fun and and

  354. certainly adventurous.

  355. But that's not the greatest adventures

  356. that one will ever take. It's not again

  357. across oceans and mountains. It is

  358. walking

  359. son of God one step at a time. It's

  360. following him in the path that he has

  361. given us. That narrow path that leads

  362. unto life. Jesus still walks by the sea

  363. of ordinary lives. Jesus still looks

  364. into

  365. working routines. Jesus still says

  366. follow me. Those two same words, follow

  367. me. And the adventure of disciplehip

  368. is not someday.

  369. What you saw in that call of Jesus there

  370. in Mark chapter one was it's now.

  371. It's now.

  372. And my friends, that is the adventure of

  373. disciplehip. Now, there's certainly more

  374. that I could speak on in this topic

  375. because it certainly is a wide ranging

  376. topic. And if you've been following

  377. along in the disciplehip journey with DJ

  378. podcast on Mondays, Monday mornings at

  379. 8:00 usually is when I have those uh

  380. out. uh you've been kind of following

  381. along there, you'll you'll hear things

  382. topics like excuse on uh topics of

  383. excuses and tomorrow mornings will be on

  384. distractions and all those things that

  385. will certainly try to veer us off the

  386. path of our disciplehip journey. And I

  387. hope that we look at our lives this

  388. evening and do some some reflection,

  389. some self-examination and say really am

  390. I on this journey? Am I experiencing the

  391. adventure of disciplehip according to

  392. the gospel, according to Jesus? And and

  393. I always like to bring this up in in

  394. anytime that I'm talking to anyone

  395. regarding the gospel is what Jesus said.

  396. How does one become a disciple? Well, he

  397. made it very clear in Mark 16:15-16 or

    Mark 16:15–16

  398. Matthew 28:18-20

    Matthew 28:18–20

  399. that speaks about the great commission

  400. when he said, "Go into all the world,

  401. preach it for he that believeth and is

  402. baptized shall be saved." And we know

  403. throughout the scriptures that one is to

  404. believe. Faith comes by hearing and

  405. hearing by the word of God. Romans 10

  406. and verse 17 that that faith that moves

  407. us to do something. That means as Jesus

  408. says, repent and believe. Do something

  409. with it. And that means believe has to

  410. do with action. And that means obeying

  411. his word to repent, a change of

  412. direction, a change of mind, a change of

  413. heart, which to leads to a change of

  414. life. And to be able to confess him that

  415. he is a son of living God and be

  416. baptized, buried with him in baptism to

  417. rise and walk in newness of life as

  418. Romans 6 3 and 4 says, and we are added

  419. to the Lord's church as we see in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  420. chapter 2. and the great example that we

  421. see there in the pattern that was set

  422. before us in the book of Acts. Friends,

  423. so much that we should be putting forth

  424. to doing what the Lord says. Our creator

  425. has given us his word, his will. And he

  426. says, "Follow me. Follow my words.

  427. Follow my will." And I hope that we

  428. certainly search ourselves and say, "Am

  429. I doing what he has commanded of me? Am

  430. I truly ready for the adventure? Am I

  431. ready to, you know, roll up the sleeves

  432. and get to work? And that is being

  433. fishissurers of men going out and

  434. seeking souls to save. And again, your

  435. soul may be the one that's in say that's

  436. in need of saving right now. I want you

  437. to think on that. And if you have

  438. questions or comments or or or what have

  439. you, you can certainly send those to me.

  440. You can comment on this thread on the

  441. YouTube or or Facebook, whichever one

  442. that you might whichever platform you're

  443. on, or you can send them to an email at

  444. uh at djaportchurchof christrist.com. Uh

  445. and I would love to hear from you. And

  446. if you'd like to study more about God's

  447. word, please let me know. I would I

  448. would certainly get you hooked up with a

  449. cor Bible correspondence course that we

  450. have on our website as well. Um just uh

  451. understand how important the being a

  452. child of God is uh from the scriptures

  453. and God's plan of salvation or as a

  454. disciple of Christ. Again, let's do some

  455. evaluation. How well are we doing in our

  456. disciplehip?

  457. That's very important to ask that we are

  458. actually progressing and we are growing

  459. spiritually maturing each and every day

  460. and that we still see the challenges

  461. before us.

  462. There's challenges we need to face.

  463. Again, it's not comfort. It's not going

  464. to be comfortable. It's about

  465. conviction.

  466. So, I I want to thank you for for being

  467. in being here and joining me in this

  468. this time of of

  469. study for this evening. Uh I would of

  470. course be aissed if I didn't of course

  471. share that on on our our times of

  472. worship at Leaport. You're in the area

  473. around the course. So, we have our 9:30

  474. a.m. Bible class for all ages, 10:30

  475. worship service and 5:00 pm worship

  476. service. And on Wednesdays, we have

  477. seven o'clock Bible class for all ages

  478. as well. Adult Bible class, we're

  479. studying the book of Acts. Uh so we

  480. certainly would enjoy for you to be with

  481. us if you're around the area or if

  482. you're not able to get out, uh you're

  483. shut in and such and uh then certainly

  484. join us online. We always like to try to

  485. put this out out there for folks uh to

  486. be able to to be encouraged as well if

  487. they're not able to be in person. But

  488. I'll say this real quickly as well as we

  489. know this so true. It's not the same as

  490. actually being in person. It's not me

  491. looking at a camper cam camera is not

  492. the same uh than being with my brothers

  493. and sisters in Christ and the

  494. encouragement that we get being

  495. together. Um so I certainly miss miss

  496. each one this evening, but I'm glad that

  497. we have this opportunity to spend some

  498. time in God's word together. And I thank

  499. you for joining in in this study. Um,

  500. but before we close out, of course, I

  501. want us to go to our heavenly father in

  502. prayer

  503. um as we as we close out our live stream

  504. this evening. So, let's let's pray.

  505. Our righteous and loving father in

  506. heaven, we come before you with grateful

  507. hearts, thankful for your mercy. We're

  508. thankful for your patience. We're

  509. thankful for the gift of your son.

  510. Thank you for the good news of the

  511. kingdom. Thank you for calling us out of

  512. darkness and into the light of your

  513. truth. And Father, as we have considered

  514. the call of of thy son and our savior

  515. Jesus to follow him, Father, we we

  516. confess that at times we have held

  517. tightly to our needs. Uh we recognize

  518. that we hold to our comforts and our

  519. routines and even our fears.

  520. Forgive us when we hesitate, when we

  521. delay, and or when we allow the familiar

  522. to stand in the way of faithful

  523. disciplehip that you've called us.

  524. Help us, Lord, to hear the voice of your

  525. son clearly. Give us hearts that are

  526. willing to repent, minds that believe

  527. fully in the gospel, and lives that

  528. respond immediately when you call. that

  529. you shape us, you mold us just as you

  530. promised into fishers of men and that is

  531. people who

  532. reflect your son and our savior Jesus

  533. Christ in our words, our actions and our

  534. priorities.

  535. Grant us courage to step out of the

  536. boat, to have the faith to trust where

  537. you lead, humility to rely on your

  538. strength rather than our own, and that

  539. our lives will bring honor to your name,

  540. and that others will be drawn to you as

  541. they see

  542. Christ living in us. Father, we ask that

  543. you go with us as we continue throughout

  544. this day and not as hearers only, but as

  545. followers seeking out the adventure of

  546. true disciplehip that we've been called

  547. to be, walking daily in obedience,

  548. service, and love. Keep us faithful,

  549. Father, until the day we stand before

  550. you,

  551. praying, Father, that having been found

  552. faithful, we'll hear the words, "Well

  553. done, thou good and faithful servant,

  554. the joys of thy Lord." Father, be with

  555. those that that are infirmed, those that

  556. are in our hearts and minds that are

  557. dealing with various ailments,

  558. struggling, Father, and that you will

  559. that you will give them strength and

  560. that they will receive encouragement and

  561. that those that minister care to them

  562. will do the things that are necessary

  563. and proper to bring them to a good

  564. measure of health. Be back with us in

  565. the near future. Father, we pray,

  566. Father, we'll always look to your son

  567. Jesus as the author and finish of our

  568. faith. how thankful we are above all for

  569. the great sacrifice that he made for us

  570. on Calvar's cross. And it's through his

  571. precious name that we pray. Amen.

  572. Again, I want to thank you for joining

  573. me in this evening Bible study. And I

  574. hope that you have been encouraged from

  575. the word that we have considered. And I

  576. hope that you will continue to read

  577. further in Mark chapter 1 throughout the

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  578. scriptures that you have. uh thinking

  579. back to this disciplehip lesson and

  580. again do that self-examination that

  581. reflection. I certainly do appreciate it

  582. and uh the time that we've been able to

  583. spend together. I hope you have a

  584. wonderful
