  1. We've all heard the phrase,

  2. "The grass is always greater on the

  3. other side." We may have used that at

  4. some point or another in our lives. Now,

  5. that phrase sounds harmless,

  6. but I believe it reveals something

  7. deeply spiritual

  8. because it exposes the human tendency

  9. to believe that somewhere else

  10. holds what God has not provided here.

  11. And that's where the illusion of greener

  12. grass comes in.

  13. Maybe we have said these words.

  14. If I had a different job,

  15. if I lived in a different place,

  16. uh if my marriage were different,

  17. if my circumstances

  18. would change,

  19. then I would finally be content.

  20. Now, I will submit to you that that

  21. mindset, that illusion of greener grass

  22. is not a new thing.

  23. A man by the name of Solomon wrestled

  24. with this very issue thousands of years

  25. ago. And in fact, the entire book of

  26. Ecclesiastes is Solomon standing at the

  27. fence line of life, okay? and looking

  28. across every possible field.

  29. And we could list some of those uh like

  30. pleasure, wealth, wisdom, power, and

  31. asking is any of this better?

  32. And he opens with words that that shake

  33. us, that kind of jolt us. And I want you

  34. to look at Ecclesiastes 1 and verses 1

  35. and two to start us off here.

  36. Ecclesiastes 1:es 1 and two.

  37. The words of the preacher, the son of

  38. David, king of Jerusalem, vanity of

  39. vanities, says the preacher, vanity of

  40. vanities, all is vanity.

  41. Now the word vanity derives from the

  42. Hebrew term habel which translates

  43. vanity or vain referring concretely to a

  44. mist vapor or mere breath and

  45. metaphorically to something that is

  46. fleeting or elusive.

  47. This word appears five times in this

  48. verse and another 29 other verses in

  49. Ecclesiastes. You see Solomon repeat

  50. these constantly. Vanity, vanity.

  51. And what Solomon is saying, everything

  52. pursued apart from God disappears when

  53. you try to hold it.

  54. So for this morning, we ask Solomon's

  55. question in modern language.

  56. Is the grass

  57. really greener on the other side?

  58. Ecclesiastes chapter 1. I want us to go

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  59. there if you're not already there.

  60. Ecclesiastes chapter 1 and we're going

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  61. to look at verses 8 through 14.

  62. in regards to the eye

  63. that is never satisfied.

  64. Ecclesiastes chapter 1, beginning in

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  65. verse 8,

  66. let's read on down.

  67. All things are full of labor.

  68. Man cannot express it. The eye is not

  69. satisfied with seeing, nor the ear

  70. filled with hearing. That which has been

  71. is what will be. That which is done is

  72. what will be done, and there is nothing

  73. new under the sun.

  74. Is there anything of which it may be

  75. said? See, this is new. It has already

  76. been in ancient times before us. There

  77. is no remembrance of former things, nor

  78. will there be any remembrance of things

  79. that are to come by those who will come

  80. after. I the preacher was king over

  81. Israel and Jerusalem. And I set my heart

  82. to seek and search out by wisdom

  83. concerning all that is done under heaven

  84. this burdensome task God has given to

  85. the sons of man by which they may be

  86. exercised. I have seen all the works

  87. that are done under the sun, and indeed

  88. all is vanity and grasping for wind.

  89. You notice that Solomon begins

  90. by describing

  91. human relentlessness

  92. or restlessness rather.

  93. They're relentless in that that the eye

  94. is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear

  95. filled with hearing.

  96. And the point that he's making there and

  97. and we're thinking and considering today

  98. is we are never done wanting. I mean,

  99. can we agree with that? We're never done

  100. wanting. Okay. Uh we we use terms like

  101. this. We scroll.

  102. Uh we compare. Uh we upgrade. Uh we we

  103. chase.

  104. I mean, have you ever bought something

  105. that you were excited about only to lose

  106. interest weeks later? I mean,

  107. everybody's going, "Yeah, yeah, that's

  108. me." It's called We find that, you know,

  109. you find that now. Your junk drawer

  110. and everybody has one, but you might

  111. have two. We have two. I mean, let's

  112. just be honest. I mean, I might might as

  113. well. We might have three. I'm not sure.

  114. But everybody has at least one of those.

  115. Okay.

  116. But the point that I make with that,

  117. especially with kids,

  118. you know, a new vehicle becomes just the

  119. car.

  120. A promotion becomes just work.

  121. How about a new phone? Does it become

  122. outdated? Yep.

  123. So Solomon tried everything.

  124. Excuse me.

  125. He tried pleasure, projects,

  126. possessions,

  127. prestige. All of those you find

  128. throughout chapter 2. Chapter 2 talks a

  129. lot about those things.

  130. And after it all, this is what he said

  131. in verse 11.

  132. Then I looked on all the works that my

  133. hands had done and on the labor in which

  134. I had told, and indeed all was vanity

  135. and grasping for the wind. There was no

  136. prophet under the sun.

  137. Here's a truth.

  138. Distance creates illusion. You ever

  139. think of it like that? Distance creates

  140. illusion.

  141. Uh

  142. from afar,

  143. another person's life looks perfect.

  144. But up close,

  145. every field has its weeds.

  146. Every family has struggles.

  147. Every marriage has hard seasons.

  148. And every career has pressure, right?

  149. Now, that's one thing I think about

  150. social media. See, social media shows

  151. highlights, don't they? They show

  152. highlights. They don't show hospital

  153. rooms.

  154. The grass doesn't grow greener because

  155. you cross the fence.

  156. It grows greener where it's watered.

  157. Now, I want you to follow through this

  158. with me in our study of Ecclesiastes.

  159. And I'm not giving you a whole we're not

  160. going to go through each and every

  161. chapter, but I'm going to try to get the

  162. highlights, if you will, of it. So, what

  163. he goes on in in Ecclesiastes chapter 4

    Ecclesiastes 4 chapter mention

  164. is something we mention even uh this

  165. morning about comparison. Comparison and

  166. how comparison can certainly steal

  167. contentment.

  168. Ecclesiastes 4 and verse4 Solomon

  169. observes something profound.

  170. He said, "I considered

  171. again, I saw that for all toll and

  172. every skillful work a man is envied by

  173. his neighbor.

  174. This also is vanity and grasping for the

  175. wind."

  176. In other words, much of what drives us

  177. is comparison.

  178. We don't want, you know, we don't just

  179. want improvement. We want advantage.

  180. Now, if you think about how really I got

  181. to see this, especially when you have a

  182. second child, you really get to see

  183. this. Uh I was the second child uh

  184. growing up. So, this is kind of how it

  185. plays out.

  186. or when you get two children together

  187. for that matter, they can be perfectly

  188. happy

  189. or content until one sees what the other

  190. has. Right? That changes real quick.

  191. Real quick,

  192. suddenly the toy that they had, it's

  193. just not good enough.

  194. And really, when you think about it,

  195. adults are no different, are we? We're

  196. not different.

  197. Because this is where we start. Well,

  198. we're going to compare houses. We're

  199. going to compare incomes, vacations,

  200. families, and I I mean, the list could

  201. go on and on for that matter. But what

  202. we see with just these is that

  203. comparison quietly

  204. steals joy. It steals that contentment.

  205. Solomon later on writes in chapter 5,

  206. you flip over chapter 5 and you look at

  207. verse 10. Look what he says. He who

  208. loves silver will not be satisfied with

  209. silver, nor he who loves abundance with

  210. increase. This also is vanity.

  211. So what he's saying is no amount is ever

  212. enough.

  213. And really this again, you connect a lot

  214. of these to these other scriptures like

  215. Proverbs has a lot to say. Proverbs 14

  216. and verse 30, a sound heart is life to

  217. the body, but envy is rottness to the

  218. bones.

  219. So what comparison does, it corrods

  220. from the inside. It makes blessings feel

  221. small. And and the devil doesn't need to

  222. remove what God gave you. He just needs

  223. to convince you someone else got more.

  224. And that's that wandering eye type

  225. stuff.

  226. And that causes some problems. It causes

  227. problems. I mean, we have a lot of

  228. accounts in the Bible that speaks to

  229. exactly what we're talking about today.

  230. And I have talked with people who are on

  231. this very level here of asking that

  232. question or even saying that statement,

  233. the grass is greener on the other side.

  234. And come to find out later on, you know

  235. what? They come back to say

  236. it wasn't. That grass had weeds, too.

  237. It's interesting that Ecclesiastes, such

  238. great wisdom that's here.

  239. Look at this next one I want to share

  240. with you.

  241. Chasing costs more peace.

  242. And now later on in chapter 5 of

  243. Ecclesiastes, Solomon goes into this

  244. again. You go to chapter 5.

  245. Look at verse 10 again that we just

  246. noted. He who loves silver will not be

  247. satisfied with silver, nor he who loves

  248. abundance with increase. This also is

  249. vanity. When good incre when goods

  250. increase, they increase who eat them. So

  251. what profit have the owners except to

  252. see them with their eyes? The sleep of

  253. our laboring man is sweet whether he

  254. eats little or much, but the abundance

  255. of the rich will not permit him to

  256. sleep.

  257. So what Solomon's warning here is

  258. abundance of the rich will not permit

  259. him to sleep.

  260. Kind of goes back to that more money

  261. often means more stress, more

  262. responsibility, more anxiety. I mean,

  263. you know, a lot of times we we use that

  264. example of just looking at Hollywood and

  265. all those that have lots and lots of

  266. money, but has it cost them some peace?

  267. Has it cost them a lot? Yes, absolutely.

  268. How often have I I've noticed people and

  269. talked with people who who leave

  270. faithful spouses chasing excitement.

  271. Uh some abandon congregations because

  272. they are chasing novelty. Uh some

  273. sacrifice integrity as they chase

  274. promotions to see how that works.

  275. All because they believe that grass is

  276. greener on the other side. But yet Jesus

  277. warned of this same exact issue in Luke

  278. 12 and verse 15. Look at Luke 12 and

  279. verse 15. As I like to remind from time

  280. to time is always proved according to

  281. God's word, not DJs. Luke 12:15. And he

    Luke 12:15

  282. said, Jesus said to them, "Take heed and

  283. beware of covetousness, for one's life

  284. does not consist in the abundance of the

  285. things he possesses." You see, it all

  286. goes right back to those warnings that

  287. that even Solomon is trying to give us

  288. because Solomon saw people gain the

  289. world and lose rest.

  290. I mean, look at what he was recognizing

  291. from his own life and all those pursuits

  292. and that quest for happiness that he was

  293. on.

  294. Jesus would go on and say in Mark 8

  295. and:es 36 and 37, for what will it

  296. profit a man if he gains the whole world

  297. and loses his own soul? Or or what will

  298. a man give in exchange for his soul?

  299. And something I I was thinking about and

  300. looking at many of these verses and

  301. preparing this lesson for this morning

  302. is basically really what Solomon and

  303. Jesus and all the Bible tells us is that

  304. we can certainly upgrade our lifestyle

  305. but at the same time downgrade our

  306. spirit.

  307. We can upgrade our lifestyle but at the

  308. same time downgrade our spirit.

  309. Again, what it cost? What does it cost

  310. ultimately?

  311. Well, let me submit to you that and what

  312. we're seeing in these passages is that

  313. God never promised greener grass. You

  314. don't find that in the scriptures, okay?

  315. That's that's not there. But he did

  316. promise daily bread. That's what he

  317. promised. I want you to notice, you go

  318. back to Ecclesiastes and look at chapter

  319. 3 and look at verses 12 and 13.

  320. Ecclesiastes chapter 3 and verses 12 and

    Ecclesiastes 3 chapter mention

  321. 13. He says,"I know that nothing is

  322. better for me for them than to rejoice

  323. and to do good in their lives and also

  324. that every man should eat and drink and

  325. enjoy the good of all his labor. It is

  326. the gift of God."

  327. Now, that's really the kind of a simple

  328. truth that Solomon lands on right there

  329. in chapter three. uh he's not talking

  330. about excess or luxuries or anything.

  331. He's talking about contentment. And

  332. that's again a huge lesson that even not

  333. just Jesus was teaching about but also

  334. as our scripture reading we'll mention

  335. here in just a moment again from 1

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  336. Timothy chapter 6 and what Paul was

  337. telling young Timothy

  338. and that even in Jesus when his in the

  339. model prayer as we think about what he

  340. said in Matthew 6 vers 11 give us this

  341. day our daily bread. you know, thinking

  342. about uh later on in chapter six, what

  343. Jesus goes on to talk about worry and

  344. the the issues of of thinking about

  345. tomorrow and all of the the the

  346. dwellings and and all of all of that.

  347. Um,

  348. and really it's it's a a great text, a

  349. classic text on worry in the latter part

  350. of Matthew chapter 6. But again, it's a

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  351. lot of times about what our focus is,

  352. what our aim is. Uh, and what he's

  353. saying here is, you know, not weekly and

  354. not yearly, but daily. Look what God is

  355. doing. He supplies what we need for

  356. today.

  357. You know, it was not too long ago we

  358. were studying about how the Israelites

  359. gathered mana one day at a time. Um, and

  360. you might remember that there was a

  361. problem that came along if they didn't

  362. do it according to the way that God

  363. commanded them. It's a very powerful

  364. illustration. I believe that they if

  365. they tried to store that mana, what

  366. happened to it? It spoiled, didn't it?

  367. And the wonderful and timely message

  368. that is that God was teaching them

  369. dependence.

  370. one day at a time.

  371. Something interesting Paul also talks

  372. about this in chapter 4 and verse 11.

  373. Not that I speak in regard to need, for

  374. I have learned in whatever state I am to

  375. be content. And Paul had found himself

  376. in a lot of different types of states uh

  377. for that matter. But what he's saying

  378. there

  379. is thinking about dependence and

  380. thinking about all those words here this

  381. morning is contentment is learned.

  382. That's a learned thing. It it grows

  383. through gratitude.

  384. It matures through trust.

  385. And that's what the scriptures teach us.

  386. It teaches us all along, trust in the

  387. Lord your God with all your heart.

  388. Right? Lean not to your own

  389. understanding.

  390. That's Proverbs chapter 3, isn't it?

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  391. See, that's all throughout the

  392. scriptures. All throughout the

  393. scriptures.

  394. Because really, when you get down to it

  395. is that the only side that matters is

  396. God's side. really

  397. because

  398. Ecclesiastes chapter 12 has always been

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  399. two verses at the very end that has

  400. always, you know, I I remember and you

  401. may remember this when you first read

  402. the book of Ecclesiastes.

  403. And there's so many golden nuggets

  404. throughout Ecclesiastes that you can

  405. certainly preach on and teach on and and

  406. dwell on. Uh but especially when you get

  407. down there to the end, it's he after

  408. he's ventured through all of these

  409. things, right?

  410. And this is what he comes to. Let us

  411. hear the conclusion of the whole matter.

  412. Fear God and keep his commandments for

  413. this is man's all. For God will bring

  414. every work into judgment, including

  415. every secret thing, whether good or

  416. evil.

  417. Think about this. After chasing every

  418. field,

  419. this is his conclusion.

  420. After wealth, after pleasure, after

  421. wisdom, and this is the answer.

  422. And what he's saying is life only works

  423. when God is central because everything

  424. else is temporary.

  425. And what did in our our scripture

  426. reading this morning? What what did we

  427. see in 1 Timothy chapter 6? Look at

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  428. verses 6 and 7 again. Now godliness with

  429. contentment is what? Great gain. Look at

  430. verse seven. That one brings it home,

  431. doesn't it? For we brought nothing into

  432. this world and is certain we can carry

  433. nothing out.

  434. Wow.

  435. Do you know what we can carry with us?

  436. The only thing that we will carry with

  437. us is our souls obviously.

  438. But what we carry with us is our

  439. faithfulness.

  440. We carry our obedience

  441. because again that's what Ecclesiastes

  442. 12 is aiming at

  443. that we can store treasure in heaven.

  444. And that's why Jesus made that

  445. abundantly clear in Matthew 6 and 19- 21

  446. when Jesus says, "Do not lay up for

  447. yourselves treasures on earth where moth

  448. and rust destroy and where thieves break

  449. in and steal, but lay up for yourselves

  450. treasures in heaven where neither moth

  451. nor rust destroys and where thieves do

  452. not break in and steal. For where your

  453. treasure is, there your heart will be

  454. also.

  455. I think it's a timely message. It's one

  456. that I certainly always need reminding

  457. of that all of us need reminding of

  458. that. I leave you with this simply. The

  459. grass is not greener on the other side.

  460. I know it looks like that, but that's

  461. why I started out with the illusion of

  462. greener grass.

  463. But friends, the point that I hope that

  464. you take away from this lesson with all

  465. these scriptures that we've considered

  466. briefly this morning is the grass is

  467. greener where it's watered,

  468. where it's tended.

  469. Marriages grow greener with forgiveness.

  470. Families grow greener with prayer. Faith

  471. grows greener with scripture.

  472. Churches grow greener with ser service.

  473. You see, and you could add so many other

  474. things there, too, can't you?

  475. If you're always looking over the fence,

  476. think about that. That's why I I I use

  477. this image. If you're always looking

  478. over the fence,

  479. you'll neglect the soil beneath your own

  480. feet.

  481. And friends, that's what we tend to do

  482. all the time. We're always looking for

  483. greener pastures.

  484. And what we've done is we've neglected

  485. the soil under our own feet.

  486. Solomon tried every pasture. He tried

  487. it.

  488. And what did he plainly tell us in a

  489. simple lesson this morning?

  490. Everything without God is empty.

  491. So instead of asking the question,

  492. what's on the other side,

  493. we have to ask the question, am I

  494. faithful on this side? Am I faithful on

  495. this side?

  496. Because the greatest blessing is not a

  497. better field,

  498. not a better pasture.

  499. It is walking with God exactly where you

  500. are.

  501. Amen. And amen.

  502. Friends, I appreciate so much your kind

  503. attention this morning in this lesson

  504. that

  505. I was dwelling upon. And I again, as

  506. I've said many times, it's really hard

  507. as a as a preacher as to decide, you

  508. know, which sermon you're going to

  509. preach. This is kind of those preacher

  510. discussions that preachers get together

  511. and like, what are you preaching on

  512. Sunday? And we're like, maybe they'll

  513. give me an idea. So that kind of thing.

  514. Um

  515. it is difficult to figure out what

  516. you're going to preach the next Sunday

  517. morning and evening services

  518. especially following a series when you

  519. have kind of things plotted out.

  520. But I thought this would be a good

  521. message for reminding

  522. and having food and clothing. With these

  523. we shall be content. But those who

  524. desire to be rich fall in temptation and

  525. snare and in many foolish and harmful

  526. lust which drown men in destruction and

  527. predition. And verse 10 of 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  528. chapter 6 continues, "For the love of

  529. money is a root of all kinds of evil for

  530. which some have strayed from the faith

  531. in their greediness and pierced

  532. themselves through

  533. with many sorrows.

  534. As you think about your life right now

  535. and expectly as we understand our life

  536. is certainly as James says it's a vapor

  537. that appears for a short time and then

  538. vanishes away. It puts things in

  539. perspective about what we're doing with

  540. the soil that's underneath our feet

  541. right now. What's the soil that's in our

  542. hearts? What are we doing with it? I

  543. hope that we are tending to it and that

  544. we're watering it. that we are doing

  545. exactly as God would have us because God

  546. will certainly give the increase as we

  547. do exactly as he desires and that we

  548. hold on to him and we trust him and we

  549. depend on him as we have seen from the

  550. scriptures. So friends, I hope that we

  551. look at our lives and we say that we

  552. certainly are tending to those things

  553. that need to be tended to uh according

  554. to his word. But it may be this very

  555. morning that there's something a miss in

  556. your life. And one of those things that

  557. may be a miss is that you haven't put on

  558. the body of Christ at baptism. And you

  559. can do that as the scriptures make

  560. abundantly clear. Need to know we've

  561. studied in the book of Acts so far from

  562. our Acts 1 all the way to Acts chapter

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  563. 9. So far we've studied about those who

  564. have put on the body of Christ in

  565. baptism. Recently Saul of Tarsus who was

  566. told to arise, be baptized and wash away

  567. his sins, calling on the name of the

  568. Lord. And you can certainly do that.

  569. repenting of your sins, confessing

  570. Jesus, be subtle in God and being

  571. baptized, buried with him, to rise and

  572. walk in newness of life as Romans 6 and

  573. verses three and four says to remain

  574. faithful and tend to that very field

  575. that we have that treasure that God has

  576. given us and we buy that entire field

  577. and we take care of it uh for his glory

  578. and his praise and his honor and we help

  579. each other along the way. As disciples

  580. of Christ, if there's something missing

  581. your life right now, maybe you've been

  582. looking for greener pastures, greener

  583. the greener grass that we certainly have

  584. noted already from Ecclesiastes and

  585. Jesus himself and Paul.

  586. It needs to be tended to right with the

  587. soil that's under our feet. And we can

  588. certainly do that by watering the seed

  589. that the word of God gives us. And

  590. again, God will give the increase. And

  591. friends, there's that fountain free that

  592. we're going to be singing about. and

  593. whatever your spiritual need this

  594. morning, won't you come as we stand and

  595. we sing the song that's been selected
