  1. This evening, we visit our series of

  2. lessons. And as I stated even this

  3. this morning at the end of services that

  4. from time to time, I will bring this

  5. series back up. Usually once a month,

  6. sometimes depending on the questions

  7. that come in, we might do twice a month.

  8. that and that is our Q&A asking for a

  9. friend where um you know anyone who has

  10. a question the Bible they can certainly

  11. submit those put them in the box one of

  12. the boxes or if you just want to hand

  13. that uh question to me in person that's

  14. fine but but I always uh mention that uh

  15. that and I always express my

  16. appreciation for uh the time that you

  17. spend and studying the word and and the

  18. questions that that may come up and a

  19. lot of times I always say that it's not

  20. just questions that you have but you

  21. know what the fact is other people have

  22. the same questions and so uh this

  23. question may be one that's been on your

  24. mind as well so it works wonderfully so

  25. I've enjoyed doing these series of

  26. lessons um from month to month um so the

  27. Q&A for this evening's lesson uh again

  28. actually derives from a question uh from

  29. our yearly Bible reading. Uh it's one of

  30. those moments just as we saw with our

  31. Q&A last month uh with that of Pharaoh

  32. and his hardened heart uh where we find

  33. ourselves immersed in in reading a

  34. chapter and verse by verse and and and

  35. think well I understand the words but

  36. what exactly does that mean? Sometimes

  37. we run into that. I mean, I do. And so I

  38. that's, you know, we that's part of our

  39. studies. Well, in our asking for a

  40. friend series, we we tackle the

  41. questions that people are thinking but

  42. may not always ask out loud, right? Uh

  43. so today's question comes from the words

  44. of Jesus himself. And I want you to go

  45. to Matthew chapter 10 in your Bibles,

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  46. Matthew chapter 10. And I want us to

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  47. look at a verse. And there's several

  48. verses we'll look at together here in

  49. just a moment from this text. But

  50. specifically Matthew chap 10 and verse

  51. 16. Verse 16,

  52. Jesus says, "Behold, I send you out as

  53. sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore,

  54. be wise as serpents and harmless as

  55. doves."

  56. Now the question that we are

  57. specifically looking at this evening is

  58. what did Jesus mean by being wise as

  59. serpents and harmless as doves?

  60. Now sometimes we look at that and we

  61. think we know what he means.

  62. But if we're honest

  63. at first that sounds like a

  64. contradiction, doesn't it? It looks like

  65. it. I mean, first of all, we got sheep

  66. among wolves. Then it says, "Be like a

  67. serpent, but also like a dove." Now,

  68. those sound opposite, don't they? Well,

  69. we know that. So, is Jesus telling us to

  70. be sneaky? Uh, is he telling us to be

  71. naive? Is he telling us to fight? Is he

  72. telling us to flee? Which one is it?

  73. Right? So, we're going to walk carefully

  74. through the text and and and hopefully

  75. that when we leave here this evening, we

  76. are equipped with knowledge and when we

  77. might be asked this question ourselves

  78. in studies with others, we'll be able to

  79. talk about some of these specific things

  80. that we find throughout the scriptures

  81. that has to do with us being wise as

  82. serpents and harmless as doves. So,

  83. first of all, let's talk about the part

  84. sheep in the midst of wolves. I think we

  85. have to use that as kind of a

  86. springboard into where we're going. Uh

  87. because he's talking about really the

  88. reality of disciplehip. Now, when Jesus

  89. begins with realism,

  90. behold, I send you out as sheep in the

  91. midst of wolves. Now, I want you to

  92. notice first what he says. I want to put

  93. this in a box here. I send

  94. sin. He sends them. They are not

  95. wandering into danger accidentally.

  96. Right? I want us to make sure we note

  97. that they are being actually

  98. commissioned into it. This chapter is

  99. Jesus sending out the 12 and there's

  100. warnings that are given here and he

  101. warns them of certain things like

  102. persecution, rejection, betrayal,

  103. hatred. Read on in verse 17- 22.

  104. But beware of men, for they will deliver

  105. you up to councils and scourge you in

  106. their synagogues. You'll be brought

  107. before governors and kings for my sake

  108. as a testimony to them and to the

  109. Gentiles. But when they deliver you up,

  110. y'all see that? But when they deliver

  111. you up, do not worry about how or what

  112. you should speak. For it is not you who

  113. for it is for it is not you who speak,

  114. but the spirit of your father who speaks

  115. in you. Now brother will deliver a

  116. brother to death and a father his child

  117. and children will rise up against

  118. parents and cause them to be put to

  119. death. And you will be hated by all for

  120. my name's sake. But he who endures to

  121. the end will be saved.

  122. Now, it's kind of a gloomy passage. All

  123. right? It's kind of gloomy with uh this

  124. uh warnings that Jesus is giving.

  125. He does not say

  126. you might encounter wolves.

  127. Didn't say that, did he?

  128. He didn't say if things get difficult.

  129. He says plainly, "You are sheep

  130. surrounded by wolves." And then he goes

  131. on in verse 23, "When they persecute

  132. you, not if they do, no fangs." The

  133. realization is there's no fangs. There's

  134. no venom, no camouflage.

  135. So you kind of get the imagery here.

  136. That's intentional. That's intentional

  137. imagery. Christians are not called to

  138. dominate culture through force. You

  139. don't find that in the scriptures.

  140. We are not called to overpower the world

  141. with intimidation.

  142. How are we portrayed in the scriptures,

  143. right? We we we want sometimes we want

  144. to think about ourselves in something

  145. different than other than sheep. But

  146. that's not Jesus. Jesus gave us what he

  147. says you're sheep.

  148. Now sheep don't have all of these other

  149. things I mentioned earlier.

  150. Sheep don't have fangs and venom and

  151. camouflage and all those other things,

  152. do they? No. As sheep, what does that

  153. mean? We're dependent. We're vulnerable.

  154. And what does that mean? We trust our

  155. shepherd.

  156. Remember Psalm 23? What's that reminder

  157. that the psalmist gives in Psalm 23 and

  158. verse one? The Lord is my shepherd. I

  159. shall not want. Lot of lessons right

  160. there. The safety of the sheep is not in

  161. their shrink but in their shepherd

  162. because that's the whole dependence part

  163. of it. And and the fact is we must stop

  164. being shocked when culture pushes back

  165. against truth. That has always been

  166. always

  167. because even Paul who understood this

  168. well quite well because what did he do?

  169. He pushed against truth didn't he? He

  170. persecuted when he was Saul of Tarsus.

  171. At the end after he became a Christian,

  172. he also felt those effects of those

  173. persecuting him because now he is the

  174. sheep

  175. and he would be able to explain and

  176. emphasize to that even of Timothy in 2

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  177. Timothy chapter 3 and verse 12. Yes, in

  178. all who desire to live godly in Christ

  179. Jesus will suffer persecution.

  180. Now kids and I have this thing

  181. sometimes, you know, the idea between a

  182. pessimist and an optimist. So we kind of

  183. go back and forth versus pessimist and

  184. optimism. So I just tell her, I'm a

  185. realist. That's how I fix that one,

  186. right? A realist. Well, you know, here's

  187. what Jesus is doing. Jesus is not he's

  188. not painting a pessimistic culture.

  189. Rather, Jesus is painting a realistic

  190. one. The Christian life is not a

  191. playground, my friends. It's a mission

  192. field.

  193. And so

  194. that's when we look at this what he's

  195. saying.

  196. And it's kind of a surprising phrase. I

  197. I can tell you that every time I've read

  198. Matthew chapter 10 and when I get to

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  199. verse 16, it does kind of just kind of

  200. what

  201. I mean, he's he's talking about

  202. being wise as serpents. Well, here's

  203. what I want us to look at that part.

  204. Strategic discernment. Strategic

  205. discernment. When you go back to that

  206. passage of verse 16, it says,

  207. "Therefore, be wise as

  208. serpents." WHY SERPENTS OF ALL TO pick

  209. from?

  210. Why serpents?

  211. Because throughout scripture,

  212. think about this, serpents symbolize

  213. shrewdness.

  214. Serpents symbolize

  215. awareness. Even Genesis 3 and verse one,

  216. the serpent was described in such a way.

  217. The serpent was more cunning

  218. than any beast of the field which the

  219. Lord God had made. Now,

  220. I want us to be clear.

  221. Jesus is not praising evil.

  222. He's not doing that.

  223. He's not praising deception.

  224. He's not doing that. But you know what?

  225. He is

  226. emphasizing and that is prudence.

  227. Now, when you break this down a little

  228. bit

  229. and think about the uh word here, when

  230. you think about serpents and how it is

  231. connected to a word called the word

  232. wise,

  233. there's a Greek word and the Greek word

  234. for wise, and I'm not going to try to

  235. pronounce that because y'all know my

  236. Burke billion will come out and I will

  237. ruin all of that right there together.

  238. But what it does, that Greek word is

  239. used to describe the qualities of being

  240. thoughtful,

  241. discreet, there's that word, prudent,

  242. and it implies a cautious character.

  243. That's what that is.

  244. And when you put that together for just

  245. a moment, what that means for us,

  246. be aware of your surroundings.

  247. Understand

  248. the times. Speak truth strategically.

  249. Don't be reckless. Does that make sense?

  250. I think that does. And as I was

  251. preparing

  252. uh this lesson, I couldn't help but

  253. think of the recent lesson from Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  254. chapter 17. That was just last Sunday

  255. night, wasn't it? Acts 17.

  256. uh and throughout Paul's missionary

  257. journeys, you know, the the way that

  258. that that Paul uh addressed those in

  259. Athens, the Athenians there on Mars

  260. Hill, very strategic, I believe, uh and

  261. and a lot of which you can go back and

  262. listen to that lesson. I won't go

  263. through it all again, but but think

  264. about how Paul did this missionary

  265. journeys all together, how he was

  266. actually demonstrating what Jesus is

  267. saying in our text of Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  268. 10.

  269. I'm going to give you another one that

  270. if you kind of go to Acts chapter 23,

    Acts 23 chapter mention

  271. Acts 23 and uh look at the example uh in

  272. verse 6

  273. when standing before the Sanhedrin. Look

  274. what look what happens here.

  275. But when Paul perceived that one part

  276. were Sadducees and the other Pharisees,

  277. he cried out in the council.

  278. Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the

  279. son of a Pharisee. Concerning the hope

  280. and resurrection of the dead, I am being

  281. judged. Now,

  282. what happens in the next verse?

  283. If you look at verse seven,

  284. immediately

  285. division broke out with dissension that

  286. arose between the Pharisees and the

  287. Sadducees wherein the assembly divided.

  288. That was being wise as a servant. That's

  289. exactly what that is because he was in

  290. the mixture of two different sex groups,

  291. right? The Pharisees and the Sadducees.

  292. Now, here's the point though. Paul's not

  293. compromising truth, right? He was wisely

  294. navigating a hostile environment because

  295. it was a hostile environment. When you

  296. read that,

  297. you know what that is again? That

  298. serpentike

  299. wisdom.

  300. It's not manipulation.

  301. It's discernment.

  302. in applying this today even we must

  303. understand there's a difference between

  304. being bold and being foolish

  305. when I said being reckless earlier okay

  306. that goes in the foolish category all

  307. right so think about what proverbs 22

  308. teaches us in verse three a prudent man

  309. there's that word that connects that

  310. Greek word wise earlier right a prudent

  311. man foresees evil and hides himself but

  312. the simple pass on and are punished

  313. Now what the proverb writer would go on

  314. to say in so many wisdom means knowing

  315. when to speak,

  316. knowing how to speak.

  317. How about knowing when silence is

  318. powerful. I tell you what, in marriage,

  319. knowing when silence can really be

  320. powerful, right?

  321. Sometimes us men, we just like, you know

  322. what? We're just going to not say

  323. anything. Maybe that's the right way,

  324. right? There's some wisdom there

  325. sometimes.

  326. But how about understanding the heart of

  327. your audience, that's a big one. And you

  328. take all of those things that I

  329. mentioned, knowing when to speak, how to

  330. speak, knowing when silence is powerful,

  331. and understand the heart of your

  332. audience. Is that not what Jesus did? Is

  333. that not what Paul did?

  334. example after example after example, we

  335. have that Jesus himself modeled this

  336. Matthew 22.

  337. If you go and you read all Matthew 22,

  338. which if you're in the yearly Bible

  339. reading program we're doing this year,

  340. guess what? You've already read Matthew

  341. 22 because we've already completed

  342. Matthew, right? In our yearly Bible

  343. reading so far. So Matthew 22 what

  344. you're what you found in that chapter he

  345. was being asked trap questions now very

  346. easily that when you go through there

  347. and it's not just Matthew 22 there are

  348. other ones of course where you find this

  349. where you have the the religious leaders

  350. and you have uh the scribes and the

  351. Pharisees of course and you go through

  352. there and and how they would try to

  353. twist things. I'll give you one real

  354. quickly. Uh verse 35, right? Uh 34 and

  355. 35.

  356. But when the Pharisees heard that he had

  357. silenced the Sadducees,

  358. they gathered together. Then one of

  359. them, a lawyer, asked him a question.

  360. What What does it say the next two

  361. words? Testing him.

  362. Yeah, we're going to throw that trap out

  363. there. We're going to try to get a

  364. snare. You see those words? testing him

  365. and saying, "Teacher, which is the

  366. greatest commandment in the law?" Over

  367. and over again, you'll see that where

  368. where they would try to send out those

  369. trap questions. Well, we're going to

  370. test him. Well, he answered in ways that

  371. did what? Exposed motives

  372. without falling into their snare.

  373. Jesus was being wise

  374. as serpents.

  375. That's what that means.

  376. He had great discernment.

  377. Friends, wisdom,

  378. as the proverb writer attests in many

  379. other passages, wisdom is spiritual

  380. awareness

  381. in a hostile world.

  382. You think about the persecution

  383. of what they were dealing with in the

  384. first century for that matter. Very

  385. intense. Again, Paul understood that

  386. very well from from both sides.

  387. He understood the importance of

  388. spiritual awareness as a disciple of

  389. Jesus Christ being wise as serpents.

  390. Now, but then you find this other part

  391. wise as serpents, but he also says to be

  392. harmless as doves. And what I believe is

  393. that's speaking of moral purity.

  394. Moral purity. Look at that verse again

  395. in Matthew 10:16 that simply says again

    Matthew 10:16

  396. that therefore be harm be wise as

  397. serpents and harmless as doves. Now

  398. again I was looking this up and thinking

  399. about well that word harmless in

  400. relation to that of doves well again the

  401. Greek word that you see before you on

  402. the chart means unmixed

  403. as in innocent. Your translation may

  404. have that word harmless,

  405. simple. Again, that's from Strong's

  406. Greek dictionary.

  407. Because when we go back to the

  408. scriptures, just as we just mentioned

  409. briefly about the serpents, doves in

  410. scripture symbolize purity. Doves

  411. symbolize gentleness. You see, we are

  412. never permitted to win by becoming like

  413. the wolves.

  414. That's not how the Bible portrays and

  415. says for us to be.

  416. I mean, if you think about this

  417. carefully,

  418. anybody's had any dealings with

  419. serpents? I've had my fair share. Uh, a

  420. serpent protects itself by being alert.

  421. A dove though symbolizes peace and

  422. purity. And yet Jesus says we must have

  423. both.

  424. Here's the key.

  425. Without wisdom,

  426. innocence becomes naive weakness.

  427. And without innocence,

  428. wisdom becomes

  429. manipulative cunning.

  430. You see, God never authorizes

  431. sinful tactics to accomplish righteous

  432. goals. Romans 3 hits on this in verse

  433. eight where it condemns the idea of

  434. doing evil that good may come. See,

  435. and this goes to what we call balance.

  436. We have a balance here.

  437. Now, some can lean too far in one

  438. direction.

  439. Some can be all dove and kind and

  440. gentle, but there's a lacking of

  441. discernment, undiscerning and easily

  442. deceived. Why? Why do we see all many

  443. scriptures about deceive? Be careful

  444. that we're not deceived.

  445. We deceive ourselves. But then you have

  446. some that think about the serpent side.

  447. Could be sharp, could be strategic, but

  448. there might be some harshness. There may

  449. be some combiveness.

  450. And again,

  451. how do you even combine this?

  452. Because Jesus says we must have both.

  453. But look at how the words are broken

  454. down. And again, keeping all in context

  455. of what Jesus is saying here regarding

  456. persecution.

  457. I want you to notice a passage what Paul

  458. mentions there in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  459. Ephesians chapter 4 I believe is a a

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  460. prime area and what he what Paul is

  461. emphasizing along with uh here in our

  462. text Ephesians chapter 4 again prove all

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  463. things according to God's word not DJs

  464. that he notes there in verses 14 and 15

  465. and 15

  466. that we should no longer be children

  467. tossed to and fro and carried about with

  468. every wind of doctrine

  469. by the trickery of men in the cunning

  470. craftiness of deceitful plotting, but

  471. speaking the truth and love may grow up

  472. in all things into him who is the head

  473. Christ. This is what really in a warning

  474. that's being given here. It is

  475. truth without love crushes

  476. and love without truth

  477. compromises.

  478. But yet Christ embodied both perfectly.

  479. So let me mention that Jesus the perfect

  480. model.

  481. When you put this wise as serpents and

  482. harmless as doves, we used again couple

  483. examples already that of Jesus and Paul.

  484. Take your mind to that of

  485. Jesus's trial.

  486. He stood before Pilate.

  487. What is it that we see?

  488. What was that encounter like?

  489. Did we see Jesus lash out?

  490. No. Didn't see that.

  491. Did Jesus manipulate

  492. in any sort of way? No.

  493. Well, what about compromise and truth?

  494. Well, we know the answer to that one,

  495. don't we? No, he didn't do that.

  496. But you know what else he didn't do? He

  497. didn't answer

  498. every accusation.

  499. You see the wisdom there?

  500. Now, if you take all the way back to the

  501. prophecy that speaks of the suffering

  502. savior, Jesus himself, Isaiah 53 and

  503. verse 7.

  504. Isaiah 53 and:e7

  505. speaks of Jesus. That's prophecy. It

  506. says, "He was oppressed and he was

  507. afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth.

  508. He was led as a lamb to the slaughter

  509. and as a sheep before its shears is

  510. silent. So he opened not his mouth.

  511. Walk through this with me. How do we

  512. start the lesson out? What's what's this

  513. verse verse 16 saying? We're talking

  514. about sheep, serpents, and doves. That's

  515. the three we're dealing with tonight.

  516. All right.

  517. What do you see in this first point here

  518. in Jesus? Here's the sheep.

  519. This is the sheep part.

  520. But earlier

  521. when confronting hypocrisy,

  522. what did he do in Matthew 23? And I like

  523. I don't have time to go all through

  524. Matthew 23 tonight. As much as I would

  525. love to, I will not. But Matthew 23 and

  526. verses 27 and 28, here's kind of a

  527. portion of it. One of the many woes that

  528. he said to the scribes and the

  529. Pharisees. Woe to you scribes and

  530. Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are like

  531. whitewashed tombs, which indeed appear

  532. beautiful outwardly, but inside are full

  533. of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.

  534. Even so, you also outwardly appear

  535. righteous to men, but inside you're full

  536. of hypocrisy and lawlessness. Jesus had

  537. a lot to say again in Matthew 23. But

  538. what I'm what I'm showing you this this

  539. evening in this that when confronting

  540. that hypocrisy, he is speaking boldly

  541. and he's speaking precisely.

  542. You know what that's called? That's

  543. serpent-like wisdom.

  544. Serpent-like wisdom.

  545. But how was all of this wrapped up as

  546. sheep

  547. and wise as a serpent?

  548. It was all wrapped up

  549. in perfect holiness.

  550. And that's the dove.

  551. You know, when we think about

  552. the applications and I had to I was

  553. dwelling on this and how to end the

  554. lesson was well, basically DJ, how do we

  555. live this out?

  556. What does that mean to me? And what does

  557. that mean to you about here? We are

  558. sheep in the midst of wolves to be wise

  559. as serpents and harmless and stuff. You

  560. know, we see Jesus, how he dealt with

  561. this and so perfectly and masterfully.

  562. And we see Paul

  563. Well, what about us?

  564. What does that look like for us in

  565. report 2026?

  566. Well, I thought about the workplace.

  567. You know, you don't compromise

  568. integrity,

  569. but you also do not unnecessarily

  570. provoke. Think about Colossians 4:es 5

  571. and six. Look at these words. This can

  572. go into all areas, right, of life. Walk

  573. in wisdom for those who are outside,

  574. redeeming the time.

  575. Let your speech always be with grace,

  576. seasoned with salt, that you may know

  577. how you ought to answer each one. Do

  578. y'all see how what Jesus say in Matthew

    Matthew 10:16

  579. 10:16 is applying here in Colossians

  580. 4:es 5 and 6?

  581. Is that what Jesus modeled

  582. that that you notice that phrase know

  583. how you ought to answer?

  584. What's that called?

  585. Wisdom.

  586. That's why he says, "Walk in wisdom."

  587. Think about our culture.

  588. Um the world is full of rage and outrage

  589. and all sorts of things.

  590. We don't mirror the outrage of the

  591. world. We're called to be different

  592. because Jesus didn't call us to fight

  593. flesh with flesh, right? He didn't do

  594. that.

  595. 2 Corinthians 10 and:es 3-5 gives us a

  596. reminder of this. 2 Corinthians 10

  597. and:es 3-5.

  598. For though we walk in the flesh, we do

  599. not war according to the flesh. For the

  600. weapons of our warfare are not carnal,

  601. but mighty in God. for pulling down

  602. strongholds,

  603. casting down arguments and every high

  604. thing that exalts itself against the

  605. knowledge of God, bringing every thought

  606. into captivity to the obedience of

  607. Christ. This is a a simple reminder that

  608. Paul has given the Corinthian brethren

  609. and and for us today that our weapons

  610. are not carnal. We do not shout wolves

  611. down.

  612. We shine light.

  613. I mean, even go to Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  614. and what are we told to put on? Put on

  615. the whole armor of God.

  616. Put on the whole armor of God. Because

  617. again, what are we fighting against?

  618. Spiritual.

  619. What about evangelism?

  620. We don't soften truth. We don't do that.

  621. How are we told to present it?

  622. with compassion.

  623. You know, Jesus speaks about how he

  624. moved with compassion.

  625. Uh think about Jesus when he met the

  626. woman at the well. Uh there's a lot

  627. there in that passage. And again, I'm

  628. kind of bringing this verses down in

  629. John 4:es 16-19 as well as verse 39. I

  630. want you to go to there and look look

  631. and again prove prove this according to

  632. the word, right? Not DJs, but according

  633. to God's word. But John 4 16-19 said

  634. Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband

  635. and come here." The woman answered and

  636. said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to

  637. her, "You have well said, I have no

  638. husband, for you have had five husbands,

  639. and the one whom you now have is not

  640. your husbands,

  641. and that you spoke truly." The woman

  642. said to him, "Sir, I perceive

  643. that you are a prophet." Now, if you go

  644. down to verse 39, notice what's going

  645. on. And many of the Samaritans of that

  646. city believed him because of the word of

  647. the woman who testified, "He told me all

  648. that I ever did."

  649. You see, Jesus in this encounter that he

  650. has with this woman at the well,

  651. Samaritan woman,

  652. what did he do?

  653. He exposed sin.

  654. But how he did it,

  655. it's beautiful. He did so gently. And

  656. what he did is he led her step by step.

  657. Three things. You know, you notice what

  658. what was happening there. And I can take

  659. you through through each and every one

  660. of Jesus encounter. And you're going to

  661. find this.

  662. He's in and his teachings

  663. how he does it

  664. with wisdom, purity, and balance every

  665. time.

  666. I was trying to think how to illustrate

  667. this.

  668. And not that we see a lot of frozen

  669. lakes around here, but um who knows? We

  670. may get one. It's Texas. You never know.

  671. could be tomorrow. Uh but just imagine

  672. walking across a frozen lake. Maybe we

  673. can just imagine it for that moment.

  674. And if you stomp recklessly,

  675. it's a high possibility you might break

  676. through.

  677. But then if you tiptoe fearfully,

  678. you may never cross.

  679. But

  680. if you move carefully,

  681. attentively,

  682. and confidently, you make it safely.

  683. Is that not how the Christian life and

  684. you think of all the balances that we

  685. have in in what God has required of us

  686. to stand out to be that light? Because

  687. again, those people are different.

  688. They're just different.

  689. They're not like the world because we've

  690. been called to be peculiar people. We're

  691. not like that of the world. We live in

  692. the world. We're not of the world,

  693. right?

  694. And we're called to walk circumspectly.

  695. Paul told the Ephesian brother, walk

  696. circumspectly. That that is a careful

  697. walk. And what Jesus is teaching us and

  698. certainly demonstrated through his own

  699. life is for us to be alert but not

  700. anxious.

  701. Be gentle, not gullible.

  702. Be bold,

  703. but not brutal.

  704. Those are things that we apply and we

  705. learn

  706. as we follow

  707. Jesus Christ our savior.

  708. I want you to remember in his conclusion

  709. how the verse began.

  710. Behold, I send you. Make that personal.

  711. He said, "Behold, I send DJ.

  712. Put your name there. I send you."

  713. Here's a key.

  714. Just as that that that song that we sang

  715. uh brother Roland Morris led us in where

  716. he leads I'll follow. Here's here it is

  717. just like that song. You see he sins and

  718. what do we do? We follow.

  719. Friends, I have a whole thing about

  720. sheep that you know my mind I'm thinking

  721. that is the that is the best way to

  722. characterize us the sheep. It really is

  723. because sheep do not survive because

  724. they are clever.

  725. There there is a video and and I and I

  726. don't have it here. I I tell you what,

  727. it's one that I have thought about many

  728. times that just pictures us really well.

  729. This this uh this guy is over there and

  730. I assume he might be the shepherd. I I'm

  731. not really sure, but uh he he this this

  732. this sheep had gotten stuck in this

  733. crevice in this ditch and I mean was

  734. just jammed off in the middle of it. And

  735. this guy and he is working so hard and

  736. he finally gets this sheep out of this

  737. crevice.

  738. And then that sheep just takes off and

  739. it starts bouncing happily along and

  740. then back in the crevice again. And I'm

  741. like, "That's me."

  742. Don't laugh too much at you, too. All

  743. right. That came back full circle,

  744. didn't it? Yeah. Y'all weren't ready for

  745. that one.

  746. But that's the truth. That's why sheep

  747. is is it's it's it just hits home

  748. because we're not clever IN THAT SUCH A

  749. WAY. We survive BECAUSE WE STAY NEAR THE

  750. SHEPHERD.

  751. It's powerful.

  752. But he is telling us

  753. how we navigate

  754. how

  755. and all the words of wisdom all the way

  756. back in Proverbs. There's so much we

  757. gain,

  758. but it all comes right back to John 10

    John 10:27

  759. verse 27. My sheep hear my voice and I

  760. know them

  761. and they follow me.

  762. Again, friends, we're not called to

  763. become wolves. That's not it. And we're

  764. not called to become snakes. And we're

  765. like, we're thankful for that one, too.

  766. We are called to remain exactly as he

  767. desires us to be, and that is sheep. And

  768. sheep are those who walk wisely and live

  769. purely.

  770. Friends, in a world of predators and we

  771. are surrounded by predators,

  772. Jesus calls us to be perceptive

  773. without being poisonous

  774. and pure without being powerless.

  775. that is being wise as serpents and

  776. harmless as doves and always faithful to

  777. the shepherd who laid down his life for

  778. the sheep. And that's our Q&A for

  779. tonight. I certainly do appreciate you

  780. spending this hour studying the word of

  781. God, worshiping God in spirit and in

  782. truth tonight. certainly have been

  783. encouraged throughout the day and for

  784. this time that we've been able to spend

  785. in God's word reminding ourselves

  786. the very powerful words that Jesus has

  787. given us so we may understand what our

  788. role and our responsibility is how we

  789. navigate throughout the predators that

  790. are out there that is certainly trying

  791. to prey upon us but realize God has

  792. given us

  793. everything that pertains to life and

  794. godly He has helped us. We just got to

  795. make sure to stay with the shepherd,

  796. stay close, stay with him, follow him

  797. wherever he leads. And I appreciate the

  798. questions that are submitted with that.

  799. A song of encouragement. Let's prepare

  800. our hearts. Think about our lives. Well,

  801. have we submitted to his will? Having

  802. heard the word, do you believe that

  803. Jesus Christ is the son living God? If

  804. you can say, "I believe that he is,"

  805. then what are we doing with him? Confess

  806. him, repent of your sins, and be

  807. baptized for the remission of your sins.

  808. To rise and walk in newness of life, as

  809. Romans 6 3 and 4 says, "And to remain

  810. faithful, staying with the shepherd,

  811. following him wherever he leads.
