  1. There is something powerful

  2. about family.

  3. Family is where you belong.

  4. Family is where you are known.

  5. Family is where you are expected.

  6. And family is where you are missed when

  7. you are absent.

  8. If someone

  9. were looking for you physically,

  10. they would likely know where to find you

  11. with your family.

  12. That is where we naturally gravitate.

  13. That's where we feel connected.

  14. That's where we feel at home.

  15. Spiritually speaking,

  16. that should be true of us as well.

  17. Brother Kyle Hill selected wonderful

  18. songs to go handinhand with a lesson

  19. that I'm giving this morning from God's

  20. word.

  21. Because if someone were looking for us

  22. spiritually,

  23. they would know exactly where to find

  24. us.

  25. They should say

  26. they're with a family.

  27. They're with the family of God. They're

  28. with their spiritual family.

  29. But sometimes that's not the case

  30. because some attend but are not

  31. connected.

  32. Some visit but are not invested. Some

  33. associate but are not committed.

  34. And there is a difference between

  35. attending something and belonging to

  36. something. Do you agree with that?

  37. Because you attend an event,

  38. but you belong to a family. See, I don't

  39. just attend at the house. I belong to

  40. the family.

  41. One will show up to an event.

  42. You live life

  43. with a family. You leave an event.

  44. You stay connected to a family.

  45. So, we're asking a question this

  46. morning. Are you part of the family?

  47. More than just attendance?

  48. Because sometimes people treat the

  49. church like an event instead of a

  50. family.

  51. Maybe it's convenient that I'm here or I

  52. come when nothing else is scheduled or I

  53. come when I feel like it.

  54. But you don't treat family that way.

  55. You don't tell your spouse, "I'll see

  56. you when I can." Right? Use that line.

  57. Let's see how that works. Y'all let me

  58. know how it turns out.

  59. You don't tell your children, "I'll show

  60. up once or twice a month."

  61. That just don't sound right, does it?

  62. Children, we we don't tell our parents,

  63. "I'll come around if nothing else is

  64. going on."

  65. See, that's not family. And we

  66. understand that on that physical side of

  67. it, we we understand. We grasp that

  68. concept because God did not call us to

  69. attend the family,

  70. right?

  71. He called us to commit to the family.

  72. I want to give you a few things to

  73. consider. God's holy and divine word. As

  74. I always like to say, prove all things

  75. according to God's word, not DJs.

  76. Some things to kind of walk through when

  77. we're talking about this question. Are

  78. you part of the family?

  79. I want us to start by well let's go to

  80. Jesus. Jesus identified himself with his

  81. father's family. You ever notice that?

  82. It's very beautiful. I want you to go to

  83. Luke chapter 2. Start start us off this

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  84. morning in the Bible. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  85. Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  86. There's quite a bit going on there in

  87. that chapter.

  88. But Jesus gives us a powerful example.

  89. And I want us to read verses 41 down

  90. through verse 52. Again,

  91. beginning in verse

  92. 41 down to verse 52. Let's read. His

  93. parents went to Jerusalem every year at

  94. the feast of the Passover. And when he

  95. was 12 years old, they went up to

  96. Jerusalem according to the custom of the

  97. feast. When they had finished the days,

  98. as they returned, the boy Jesus lingered

  99. behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and his

  100. mother did not know it. But supposing

  101. him to have been in the company, they

  102. went a day's journey and sought him

  103. among their relatives and acquaintances.

  104. So when they did not find him, they

  105. returned to Jerusalem seeking him. Now

  106. so it was a that after three days they

  107. found him in the temple sitting in the

  108. midst of the teachers both listening to

  109. them and asking them questions. And all

  110. who heard him were astonished at his

  111. understanding and answers. So when they

  112. saw him they were amazed. And his mother

  113. said to him, "Son, why have you done

  114. this to us? Look, your father and I have

  115. sought you anxiously." And he said to

  116. them, "Why did you seek me? Did you not

  117. know that I must be about my father's

  118. business?

  119. But they did not understand the

  120. statement which he spoke to them. Then

  121. he went down with them and came to

  122. Nazareth and was subject to them. But

  123. his mother kept all these things in her

  124. heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and

  125. stature and favor with God and men.

  126. I This one always is perplexing

  127. sometimes to me when you think about it.

  128. Uh 12 years old. This is Jesus at 12

  129. years old. His parents go to Jerus. They

  130. went to Jerusalem. When they left,

  131. where's Jesus?

  132. They lost him.

  133. Jesus remained behind.

  134. And after three days of searching, three

  135. days, man, we go one hour looking for

  136. our kid, you know, because they're

  137. hiding because they ain't cleaning their

  138. room. They're somewherees, right? After

  139. three days of searching, they found him

  140. in the temple.

  141. Now, of course, what's the natural thing

  142. a mother's going to ask?

  143. Why have you done this to us? Right? I

  144. can get the tone inflection going. And

  145. Jesus' response was something something

  146. very interesting, wasn't it? Did you not

  147. know that I must be about my father's

  148. business?

  149. It's verse 49. Now, see, something's

  150. interesting. Jesus assumed something uh

  151. because he's saying, "Hey, if you're

  152. looking for me,

  153. you would know where I should be.

  154. I will be my father. I will be where his

  155. father's work was taking place."

  156. If a child's missing, the first place

  157. the parents should check his home. I

  158. don't know how many times I've been on

  159. searches before and and the parents are

  160. just like, "We lost our kid." And you

  161. know, they're they're out somewhere and

  162. so I just go in the house. You know

  163. where I find them? Under the bed.

  164. There they are. Right. We already

  165. dispatch helicopters and everything.

  166. There he is.

  167. But why is it? Because that's where they

  168. belong. They belong at home, right?

  169. But Jesus saying, "You should have known

  170. where I would be. I'm with my father."

  171. Now, when I look at that, I say that's

  172. commitment. That's commitment. Friends,

  173. when you look and study the life of

  174. Jesus, you know what you conclude?

  175. You conclude that Jesus life revolved

  176. around his father. His priority centered

  177. around his father. His presence

  178. reflected his father. But also notice

  179. something else. I want you to go to

  180. Matthew chapter 12. Back up to Matthew,

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  181. the book of Matthew. in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  182. 12 that there's another layer here that

  183. we find. It's not just Jesus is, you

  184. know, even at the age of 12 that he is

  185. about his father's business. But even

  186. Matthew chapter 12, there's something he

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  187. mentions here later on in life. He says

  188. in verse 48 through 50, but he answered

  189. and said to the one who told him, "Who

  190. is my mother and who are my brothers?"

  191. And he, Jesus, stretched out his hand

  192. toward his disciples and said, "Here are

  193. my mother and my brothers.

  194. For whoever does the will of my father

  195. in heaven is my brother and sister and

  196. mother.

  197. You know what Jesus does here? He makes

  198. this really even clearer because what he

  199. does in this moment Matthew 12:48-50 is

    Matthew 12:48–50

  200. he redefined family.

  201. Family is not just physical. He's saying

  202. family is spiritual. The family of God

  203. becomes the true family. And if the

  204. church is truly our family, then that

  205. means the family of God must become our

  206. priority.

  207. Isn't that what he's saying? The family

  208. of God must become our priority.

  209. You see, many people love the idea of

  210. church family. You know, many people

  211. love the idea of church family, but

  212. never truly commit to it. I like the

  213. people.

  214. I like fellowship we got going on.

  215. kind of occasional thing I got here will

  216. you?

  217. But friends, commitment is deeper. I

  218. want to show you something else. Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  219. chapter 1. Look at Mark chapter 1 16-20.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  220. Look at that.

  221. And as he walked by the Sea of Galilee,

  222. he saw Simon Andrew's brother casting a

  223. net into the sea, for they were

  224. fishermen. Then Jesus said to them,

  225. "Follow me, and I will make you become

  226. fishers of men." They immediately left

  227. their nets and followed him. When he had

  228. gone a little farther from there, he saw

  229. James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his

  230. brother, who also were in the boat

  231. mending their nets. Immediately he

  232. called them, and they left their father,

  233. Zebedee, in the boat with their the

  234. hired servants, and went after who did

  235. they go after?

  236. Jesus.

  237. They went after him, Jesus.

  238. See, Jesus called fishermen and said,

  239. "Follow me."

  240. And immediately they left their nets,

  241. their boats, their work. They followed

  242. him. And what's the word that we connect

  243. to that naturally I connect the word

  244. commitment to that?

  245. Imagine someone saying, "I want to be a

  246. part of your family." Imagine that for a

  247. moment. But they never spend time with

  248. you. They never talk with you. They

  249. never help you. They never encourage

  250. you. And they never show up. Now, let me

  251. ask you, do they want to be a part of

  252. your family? We know the answer to that

  253. is no, they don't.

  254. They like the idea of it. You would say

  255. they like us, but they're not committed.

  256. And that's the difference between

  257. attendance and commitment. Look at Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  258. chapter 10. Let me give you this. Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  259. chapter 10. This is pretty interesting.

  260. In verses 29 and 30. 29 and 30 of Mark

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  261. chapter 10. So Jesus answered and said,

  262. "Assuredly I say to you, there is no one

  263. who has left house or brothers or

  264. sisters or father or mother or wife or

  265. children or lands for my sake in the

  266. gospels who shall not receive a hundfold

  267. now in this time houses and brothers and

  268. sisters and mothers and children and

  269. lands with persecutions and in the ages

  270. in the age to come eternal life."

  271. Jesus is saying those who leave houses,

  272. brothers, sisters, parents and lands for

  273. his sake will receive 100fold. You ever

  274. think, well, what in the world is he

  275. talking about?

  276. I grab right out of there. He's saying

  277. you gain a new family.

  278. You gain brothers, sisters, mothers,

  279. children. Because what's he saying? The

  280. church becomes your family. What does

  281. that mean? You care for one another. You

  282. support each other. You encourage each

  283. other. You help each other. You

  284. prioritize each other. Friends, that's

  285. commitment, isn't it?

  286. See, we can make these connections all

  287. day long with physical family. We can we

  288. can this is this is easy for us.

  289. But Jesus is making the connection

  290. spiritually speaking of what family is.

  291. Let me give you another sign of of of

  292. true family. And this when someone's

  293. missing, you know what that is? It's

  294. noticed

  295. that commitment means you are missed

  296. when absent.

  297. That one of the clearest signs really is

  298. this.

  299. You ever notice when someone's missing

  300. in your house because they're gone

  301. somewhere or something.

  302. You see an empty chair

  303. where they once sat.

  304. You notice silence

  305. where someone usually speaks.

  306. You notice that someone who normally

  307. sits there is gone.

  308. Because you know what families do?

  309. Families notice absence, do they not?

  310. Now, when I'm out of town,

  311. my family notices my absence for a lot

  312. of reasons. I may talk a little bit.

  313. I may

  314. When one child does not show up for

  315. dinner, the family asks, "Where are

  316. they?"

  317. Right? It's like hering cats at our

  318. house. You get two, then another one's

  319. disappeared.

  320. Then you get the other one in there,

  321. it's like, "Well, we're missing the

  322. other one."

  323. We say, "Where are they?"

  324. When someone's missing from a gathering,

  325. you know, someone calls, they check on

  326. them

  327. because family members are this, they're

  328. known, they're loved, they're missed,

  329. they're sought.

  330. Is that not what we see in Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  331. 2? Those people right there, they were

  332. from all different places

  333. backgrounds, all sorts. Remember, they

  334. heard that first gospel sermon, the day

  335. of Pentecost, and they said, "Man and

  336. brother, what shall we do?" And then

  337. said, "Repent, be baptized. Everyone in

  338. the name of Jesus Christ sins, you shall

  339. receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

  340. What did they do? Look at verse 41. Then

  341. those who gladly received his word were

  342. baptized. And that day about 3,000 souls

  343. were added to them, and they continued

  344. steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and

  345. fellowship and the breaking of bread and

  346. in prayers. Then fear came upon every

  347. soul, and many wonders and signs were

  348. done through the apostles. Now all who

  349. believed were together and had all

  350. things in common, and sold their

  351. possessions and goods, and divided them

  352. among all as anyone had need. So

  353. continuing daily with one accord in the

  354. temple and breaking bread from house to

  355. house, they ate their food with gladness

  356. and simplicity of heart, praising God

  357. and having favor with all the people.

  358. And the Lord added to the church daily

  359. those who were being saved.

  360. They continued steadfastly in the

  361. apostles doctrine of fellowship. All who

  362. believed were together. Y'all notice

  363. that they ate together, they prayed

  364. together, they encouraged each other,

  365. they shared with each other. What what I

  366. say that's not Sunday only Christianity,

  367. is it? That's not that

  368. because the early church I believe was

  369. we see in our study in the book of Acts

  370. and our in our adult Bible classes, they

  371. were Monday Christians. They were

  372. Tuesday Christians. They're Wednesday. I

  373. could go through the rest of the week,

  374. but you get it. They were everyday

  375. Christians.

  376. They did not just sit in pews together.

  377. And our idea, you know, the way we we

  378. have it here, I mean, they met in

  379. houses, right? They met. But that that

  380. is that's family. They shared a life

  381. together. You know why that was

  382. important? Because they had persecution.

  383. And we just read about what were they

  384. doing? They were praying. They were

  385. constant in prayer. They were united

  386. together.

  387. That's family.

  388. That's what family is.

  389. And committed families not only notice

  390. absence,

  391. they also help people belong.

  392. That's important. Commitment means being

  393. connected.

  394. I want you to go to Acts chapter nine.

  395. You know, this is one we were just

  396. studying in in our uh recent adult Bible

  397. class again, book of Acts. Acts chapter

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  398. 9. I want you to look at verses 26 down

  399. through verse 28. See what you grab out

  400. of that. Okay?

  401. And when Saul, now remember Saul,

  402. persecutor of the church. And Saul, when

  403. Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to

  404. join the disciples, but they were all

  405. afraid of him and did not believe that

  406. he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him

  407. and brought him to the apostles and he

  408. declared to them how he had seen the

  409. Lord on the road and that he had spoken

  410. to him and how he had preached boldly at

  411. Damascus in the name of Jesus. So he was

  412. with him at Jerusalem coming in and

  413. going out.

  414. Now when Saul, he was baptized, was

  415. added to the church. What does that

  416. mean? You're added to the family,

  417. family of God. Is that what we've been

  418. talking about?

  419. And so in Acts nine, Saul being

  420. converted, he tried to join the

  421. disciples. And again, we've talked about

  422. this in our Bible class because yeah, he

  423. wanted to be a part of the family.

  424. Well, they were hesitant. Again, we talk

  425. about this. Wouldn't we all be hesitant?

  426. But Barnabas took him and brought him to

  427. the apostles.

  428. Barnabas helped him belong. Y'all see

  429. that?

  430. Some people want to be part of the

  431. family, but they need help connecting.

  432. Let me ask you this. I think we could

  433. probably we could probably all relate to

  434. this.

  435. Have you ever walked into a room where

  436. everyone knows each other

  437. and you just feel out of place?

  438. I have been I have been to things like

  439. that. Now it don't take me long.

  440. I'll be a part of your group.

  441. You just give me a minute.

  442. You feel out of place. You hesitate.

  443. That's what we do. And sometimes you

  444. might stand on the edge because you're

  445. like, I don't know what do I do with

  446. this.

  447. Well, Barnabas helped Saul along.

  448. Again, Barnabas, we know he was called

  449. the son of encouragement. Love that.

  450. Well, committed families, you know what

  451. they do? They reach out. They include.

  452. They encourage. They connect.

  453. Connect. I've used that word a couple

  454. times. I want to I want to share

  455. something uh else with you on this.

  456. There's a difference between something

  457. being gathered

  458. and something being assembled.

  459. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the

  460. disciples.

  461. They didn't merely show up, they

  462. assembled. Do you ever notice that?

  463. Assembled is the word.

  464. uh Acts 20:7 it talks about you know how

    Acts 20:7

  465. they even came together.

  466. Well the phrase came together carries an

  467. idea of purposeful unity.

  468. It was not accidental. It's not random.

  469. I'm it just so happens I'm here this

  470. morning stand in the pull pit. No that's

  471. not an accident. Okay. It's not random.

  472. It was not simply a crowd in a same

  473. room. It was an assembled body. And I

  474. want you to to kind of zoom in on this

  475. for just a moment of what Saul was

  476. wanting to do when he said, "I want to

  477. be connected to you as a family.

  478. I'm a fellow disciple of Christ

  479. and you are."

  480. and the importance that Jesus emphasized

  481. of being a part of the family

  482. as an assembled body. Now, we often use

  483. the words gathered and assembled

  484. interchangeably,

  485. but actually they're not the same. I

  486. know, you know, you start breaking down

  487. words and stuff, that's what you're

  488. going to find because I will submit to

  489. you that a group can be gathered without

  490. ever being assembled. Do you know what

  491. the difference in that? Well, I'm going

  492. to tell you what those are if you don't

  493. know what that is already.

  494. I'm going to use the example of buying

  495. something that says assembly required.

  496. You ever bought something said assembly

  497. required? When my wife brings something

  498. says assembly required, I'm like, I will

  499. have about a couple hours of figuring

  500. this out. She's going to read the

  501. instructions eventually for me because

  502. I'm not going to do that. But, uh, but

  503. when you open the box,

  504. all the parts are there.

  505. The pieces are gathered together. Now,

  506. get this in your mind. All the pieces

  507. are gathered together.

  508. And a lot of times what you'll buy,

  509. you'll see the screws are in one bag.

  510. The boards are stacked neatly. Maybe not

  511. so neatly sometimes. The instructions

  512. are included. At least you hope. Um,

  513. everything needed is present. Y'all see

  514. where I'm going with this?

  515. But let me tell you something. Although

  516. the screws are in the bag here and you

  517. got the boards over here stacked up and

  518. you got the instructions and and other

  519. little things, nothing functions yet.

  520. Nothing functions.

  521. The parts are gathered, but they are not

  522. assembled. Y'all see

  523. until the pieces are intentionally

  524. connected, aligned and working together,

  525. the product cannot serve its intended

  526. purpose.

  527. Is that what we find in our study this

  528. morning? Spiritually speaking, is that

  529. what Jesus was emphasizing?

  530. Because friends, we can gather in the

  531. same building. We can do that. We can

  532. sit in the same pews. We can sing the

  533. same songs. We can hear the same sermon

  534. and still not be truly assembled.

  535. And the meaning that I'm giving you,

  536. it's more than physical presence. It

  537. means connected in purpose. We're united

  538. in heart and we're functioning together

  539. as one body. Is that that song right

  540. before the lesson? We are what? Two or

  541. three or 560? know one we are one.

  542. The New Testament as we have noted

  543. really consistently emphasizes this

  544. idea. You know a lot of times you see

  545. that scripture in Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  546. Let us consider one another in order to

  547. stir up love and good works not

  548. forsaking the assembling

  549. of ourselves together.

  550. There's emphasis that's placed on that

  551. for a reason. And the writer does not

  552. merely say gathering. The idea is

  553. intentional connection.

  554. That goes even beyond even here

  555. in this building. It is believers

  556. that have come together so that

  557. something meaningful happens. That we

  558. are equipped

  559. to encourage, to strengthen, to stir up

  560. one another, to function together.

  561. Because a pile of parts does not build a

  562. table.

  563. A stack of lumber does not become

  564. furniture.

  565. Pieces in a box do not serve their

  566. intended purpose. They must be

  567. assembled. And the church is not meant

  568. to be a box full of disconnected pieces.

  569. We are designed to be assembled by God.

  570. Paul put this so beautifully in

  571. Ephesians 4 and verse 16. from whom the

  572. whole body joined and knit together by

  573. what every joint supplies. You know what

  574. he goes on to say? Causes growth of the

  575. body.

  576. Because friends, what Saul was wanting

  577. was to be assembled.

  578. He want to be assembled.

  579. He wanted to feel that love.

  580. to be connected

  581. because when the church is assembled the

  582. way God desires, every member matters.

  583. Every part supplies something. Every

  584. connection strengthens the whole and the

  585. body functions as God intended. But when

  586. we only gather, we may be present, but

  587. we're not connected. We may attend, but

  588. we're not going to contribute. We may

  589. sit together, but we will not function

  590. together. See, there's a difference

  591. distinctly in the scriptures.

  592. God never intended for his people to be

  593. merely gathered spectators.

  594. He designed us to be an assembled body

  595. every day as family.

  596. Just like that box marked assembly

  597. required. The pieces are all there, but

  598. purpose only comes when they're actually

  599. joined together. Isn't that what Saul

  600. wanted? What did he come to do? To join

  601. the disciples.

  602. That's what he wanted.

  603. The church is strongest not when we

  604. simply gather but when we are truly

  605. assembled friends.

  606. And what Jesus makes clear

  607. that belonging to the family requires

  608. full commitment. That means you're all

  609. in.

  610. There is perhaps no passage that's more

  611. clearly defines true commitment. I think

  612. Luke chapter 9 57-62.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  613. In Luke chapter 9 verse 57 down through

    Luke 9:57

  614. verse 62. I want you to read with me.

  615. Now it happened as they journeyed on the

  616. road that someone said to him, "Lord, I

  617. will follow you wherever you go." And

  618. Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes and

  619. birds of the air have nests, but the son

  620. of man has nowhere to lay his head."

  621. Then he said to another, "Follow me."

  622. But he said, "Lord, let me first go and

  623. bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let

  624. the dead bury their own dead, but you go

  625. and preach the kingdom of God." And

  626. another also said, "Lord, I will follow

  627. you, but let me first go and bid them

  628. farewell who are at my house." But Jesus

  629. said to him, "No one having put his hand

  630. to the plow and looking back is fit for

  631. the kingdom of God."

  632. Now, when you read this text,

  633. Jesus encounters three individuals and

  634. each one reveals something about what it

  635. really means to follow Jesus. Verse 57,

  636. the scripture says, "As they were going

  637. along the road, someone said to

  638. him,"Lord, I will follow you wherever

  639. you go."

  640. Now, at first, that sounds like exactly

  641. what we want to hear. Oh, I like that.

  642. At first, it sounds, "Lord, I'm all in.

  643. Lord, I'm ready. Lord, I will go

  644. wherever you go." Oh, but Jesus responds

  645. in a way that may surprise us.

  646. What does he say in verse 58? Foxes have

  647. holes and birds of the air have nests,

  648. but the son of man has nowhere to lay

  649. his head.

  650. What is Jesus doing when he says that?

  651. Is he trying to discourage the man?

  652. Well, no. He's not discouraging the man.

  653. He is taking this moment to define what

  654. true commitment is.

  655. I I like sometimes I look at that from

  656. the standpoint of Ruth, right?

  657. And I use this this terminology. I will

  658. go wherever you go. I will lodge where

  659. you lodge. Your God will be my God. You

  660. know that kind of that kind of language.

  661. That's commitment, isn't it? Ruth's

  662. committed to Naomi. They were committed

  663. to go to be with her mother-in-law

  664. to help her.

  665. What Jesus is saying before you say I

  666. will follow you need to understand what

  667. following costs is what he's saying

  668. because he's saying following me

  669. following me is not comfortable

  670. following me is not going to be

  671. convenient and following me is not built

  672. around your schedule

  673. like well hold on a second is that what

  674. he's saying in those verses you're

  675. mighty right he is

  676. he's saying you surren surrendered to

  677. him. And friends, it's easy to commit to

  678. something when you don't know the cost

  679. of it.

  680. It's easy to say, "I'll go wherever you

  681. go until wherever cost you something."

  682. And Jesus is making it clear commitment

  683. is not emotional excitement. That's the

  684. problem. Our society is all about

  685. emotionalism. Emotional excitement. I'm

  686. going to do No, that's not what that.

  687. It's intentional surrender. And in verse

  688. 59, Jesus turns to another man. You know

  689. what he says? Jesus, follow me. But the

  690. man said, "Lord, let me first go and

  691. bury my father." Now, at first glance,

  692. that sounds reasonable, you know, and

  693. and that sounds reasonable.

  694. Sounds respectful, sounds responsible,

  695. it sounds like a valid excuse. But Jesus

  696. responds, "Let the dead bury their own

  697. dead, but you go and preach the kingdom

  698. of God." Now, this is one of the

  699. strongest statements Jesus makes. I'm

  700. going to tell you, it's one of the He is

  701. not minimizing family responsibilities.

  702. What he's emphasizing though is

  703. spiritual priority

  704. because the issue is not burial. The

  705. issue is let me first.

  706. Now let's put it this way. Lord I will

  707. follow you

  708. but first. See it sounds different when

  709. you say it that way doesn't it? I will

  710. do but first.

  711. See we like that when our kids tell us

  712. that right? I want you to go clean your

  713. room. I will do that. But first, I want

  714. to play a game.

  715. Parents, how do we deal with that?

  716. That game's a priority.

  717. Go ahead. You do. You do. You do you.

  718. That's not how that goes. We know that.

  719. Okay.

  720. But see, that's that but first thing.

  721. Lord, I will commit. But first, Lord,

  722. I'll be involved. first.

  723. See, that's not that's not what Jesus is

  724. teaching us that true commitment that

  725. don't put him second.

  726. He's saying, "Let me see if I can pencil

  727. you in somewhere."

  728. Friends, he's not part of our schedule.

  729. He's He's part of our life.

  730. He's center of our lives.

  731. If someone tells you, "You're important

  732. to me, but not right now.

  733. You got to tell that to your spouse,

  734. too. Okay? It's not going to work out

  735. very well, either.

  736. Jesus is not asking to be one of many

  737. priorities. He's calling us to make him

  738. the priority.

  739. Now, my house, they understand that

  740. meaning where they're not first. God's

  741. first and then they come along. They

  742. understand that. That's that's our

  743. that's our rule of our house

  744. that God has be number one.

  745. He's the most important and then they

  746. follow suit in his plan.

  747. Verse 61. Other man says, "Lord, I will

  748. follow you, but let me first go and bid

  749. farewell to those who are at my house."

  750. Sounds harmless.

  751. It's just a quick goodbye.

  752. Not in the South. is not

  753. trying to tie up loose ends. Just one

  754. last moment. But what Jesus responds,

  755. "No one having put his hand to the plow

  756. and looking back is fit for the kingdom

  757. of God." I want you to picture that for

  758. a moment. A man is plowing a field, but

  759. instead of looking forward, he keeps

  760. looking back. What happens?

  761. The rows become crooked, the work

  762. becomes uneven, and the progress becomes

  763. ineffective. Jesus paints that picture

  764. perfectly for us. Do you know why that

  765. is? Because the focus has been divided.

  766. Jesus is teaching a powerful truth. You

  767. cannot move forward spiritually while

  768. constantly looking back. You cannot be

  769. committed while still holding on to what

  770. you left behind.

  771. Lot's wife

  772. maybe a good example there.

  773. You cannot be allin while your heart is

  774. still somewhere else.

  775. So when you bring all of this together

  776. in in in these really three encounters,

  777. Jesus reveals three obstacles to

  778. commitment. Y'all ready?

  779. Comfort is number one.

  780. I'll follow you as long as it's easy.

  781. Number two, priority. I'll follow, but

  782. after I handle other things. Number

  783. three, divided focus. I'll follow, but

  784. I'm still holding on to my old life. And

  785. Jesus answers all three the same way.

  786. And what was it? Commitment means you're

  787. all in.

  788. It's like a man standing at the edge of

  789. a river saying, "I'm ready to jump in."

  790. But one foot is still on the bank. Uh

  791. you're not ready.

  792. Might lean forward a little bit. You're

  793. just never fully committed

  794. cuz he's not in the water and he's not

  795. fully on land either.

  796. somewhere in between.

  797. Well, brethren, that's where many

  798. Christians live. Not fully committed,

  799. not fully surrendered, and not fully

  800. engaged. But Jesus did not call us to

  801. stand on the edge.

  802. He called us to be allin.

  803. And what commitment means is no

  804. conditions, no delays, no divided

  805. loyalties. It means I'm allin with

  806. Christ. And do you know what goes with

  807. Christ? It's not just him, it's his

  808. family.

  809. Did Jesus make that clear earlier in the

  810. lesson? Yes, he did.

  811. Because you can't be a true Christian, a

  812. true disciple, a follower of Christ

  813. without being member of the Lord's

  814. church, his body for Jesus and his

  815. church. You know, they go together.

  816. You have to be part of the family.

  817. In our scripture in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  818. chapter 12 that brother Aiden Mosley

  819. read for us, let me give you verses 25-

  820. 27. But there should be no schism in the

  821. body, but that the member should have

  822. the same care for another. And if one

  823. member suffers, all the members suffer

  824. with it. Or if one member is honored,

  825. all the members rejoice with it. Now you

  826. are the body of Christ and members

  827. individually. Friends, let me share with

  828. this truth with you. Just as you cannot

  829. be half married, you can't be a

  830. part-time parent. You can't be

  831. occasionally a family member. And you

  832. cannot be half committed to God's

  833. family. It doesn't work that way.

  834. Because that's not the way God defined

  835. family,

  836. physical or spiritual.

  837. Friends, we hear a lot of words said we

  838. are the family of God.

  839. You ever say that we're the family of

  840. God? But what I wanted us to consider in

  841. this lesson is although we may claim it

  842. with words, I'm asking does our actions

  843. support such a claim? Are we actually

  844. part of the family?

  845. I want my children to know that they

  846. have us a physical family,

  847. but they also have a spiritual family. I

  848. want them to understand that

  849. because there's meaning and significance

  850. behind it. Not because dad says it to be

  851. so, but because that's the way God

  852. designed life. That's the way he

  853. designed the church. You know,

  854. we have to be careful that our words

  855. match our actions.

  856. It's important

  857. because again who we influence

  858. because we can use words we're part of

  859. the family of God. You know people know

  860. that you know because you tell them I'm

  861. I'm part of the family of God. I'm a

  862. member of the Lord's church.

  863. Well, there's a story that's told about

  864. a man. He'd been a member of the Lord's

  865. church for years. He lived a quiet life.

  866. His neighbor his neighbor had watched

  867. him over time. And the neighbor knew he

  868. was a Christian. He knew where he

  869. worshiped. He knew he believed in God.

  870. And one Sunday morning, the neighbor

  871. finally decided he was going to go to

  872. worship where his neighbor went. He and

  873. he's had been thinking about it for a

  874. long time because, you know, he's got

  875. this family of God over here that he

  876. talks about from time to time. Well, he

  877. had questions. He was searching. No,

  878. he's ready.

  879. Before getting ready, he walked outside

  880. and he saw his neighbor, the Christian,

  881. and he's out well just mowing the grass.

  882. Well, neighbor walked over and said, "I

  883. thought you went to worship with your

  884. church family." The man replied, "I do,

  885. but I decided to stay home today and cut

  886. my grass. I'll go next time.

  887. Well, the evening rolled around.

  888. Neighbor neighbor didn't go.

  889. He had something else to do.

  890. I I thought you were part of the family

  891. of God.

  892. I just can't. I'm tired. I can't do

  893. that.

  894. You know what the neighbor said?

  895. He said something powerful. He says,

  896. "Well, if it's not important enough for

  897. you to be there,

  898. then I guess it's not important enough

  899. for me to go."

  900. Now, what influence do you think that

  901. that guy had on his neighbor?

  902. See, I can claim one thing, but do

  903. another.

  904. And that man never went.

  905. Now, again, you think about who you're

  906. teaching. your neighbor, your

  907. co-workers, your children, your

  908. grandchildren, and the list go on. Your

  909. friends, what do they see in your life?

  910. Are you part of the family? Do they know

  911. where you are this morning?

  912. We've told people before, I said, "Well,

  913. we're going to meet at 10 o'clock on

  914. Sunday morning." And I just told them,

  915. Ken says, "We ain't going to be there."

  916. Well, you're you're part of the team.

  917. You got to be here. No, we're not part

  918. of that team. We're part of the family

  919. of God. And that's where we're going to

  920. be.

  921. One decision, one moment of misplaced

  922. priority, opportunities are lost. And

  923. brethren, we don't always realize who's

  924. watching. We don't always realize who's

  925. considering coming. We don't always

  926. realize who is measuring the importance

  927. of God and his family by our actions. We

  928. don't realize the impact that it has.

  929. And we wonder why the nation is in such

  930. a mess.

  931. We wonder why we have the problems that

  932. we do today. Because things have changed

  933. since I've been growing up

  934. because people have been treating God

  935. and his family as optional.

  936. They treated his word as optional.

  937. And others begin to think, well, it must

  938. not be essential here.

  939. Friends, when we treat worship and we we

  940. treat such things associated with God as

  941. secondary, others begin to believe it

  942. must not be important.

  943. When we choose everything else over the

  944. family, others conclude that family must

  945. not really matter

  946. because again, God and family, they go

  947. together.

  948. But again the truth is as we have seen

  949. in this lesson our commitment speaks

  950. louder than our words. And when we are

  951. committed to the family of God we show

  952. this matters. This is important. This is

  953. where I belong. You are my people.

  954. You are my people and I love you.

  955. The church is not something we just

  956. attend.

  957. It is a family we are committed to.

  958. So the question this morning is simple.

  959. I'm asking are you part of the family? I

  960. want you to notice why I used that that

  961. language. I did not say are you on the

  962. role. I know what that means, right?

  963. Are you in the church directory? I

  964. didn't ask that. Okay.

  965. I didn't ask are you on the duty roster?

  966. Didn't ask that one either.

  967. I didn't ask do you attend? Sometimes

  968. I'm asking are you part of the family?

  969. I'm asking are you committed to the

  970. family? And as we have seen very

  971. clearly, I believe in this lesson that

  972. means you are present. You're involved.

  973. You're invested. You're connected. And

  974. you prioritize the family. And when

  975. someone looks for you, they're going to

  976. know where you are.

  977. You're with a family.

  978. Well, friends, perhaps this morning

  979. someone is not yet part of God's family.

  980. But you believe that Jesus Christ is the

  981. son of living God. You believe that with

  982. all your heart

  983. and you're ready to repent of your sins.

  984. You're ready to confess his name and

  985. you're ready to be baptized forgiveness

  986. of sins. Friends, that's what they did

  987. in Acts chapter 2. And they were

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  988. baptized about 3,000 souls on the day of

  989. Pentecost after that gospel sermon. They

  990. were baptized for the remission of their

  991. sins. And what happened? And the Lord

  992. added to the church daily. Those who are

  993. being saved,

  994. they were added to the family.

  995. When you obey the gospel, you are added

  996. to the family.

  997. If you need to do that this morning, we

  998. would love for you to be part of our

  999. family.

  1000. A family that's growing,

1001. striving to do what's right in the sight

  1002. of God, our father.

1003. But maybe you're already a disciple of

1004. Christ and you have not truly committed,

1005. maybe been distant, maybe inconsistent,

1006. maybe maybe you haven't prioritized the

1007. family. Well, this morning you can

1008. change that. You can do it. Jesus calls
