  1. There are moments in life that change

  2. everything.

  3. A phone call can change everything.

  4. A diagnosis, a wedding, the birth of a

  5. child,

  6. a tragedy,

  7. all of these can change everything.

  8. There are moments after which life is

  9. never quite the same again.

  10. But above every event in human history,

  11. there is one event that truly changed

  12. everything forever.

  13. And that is what we've been singing

  14. about this morning, and that is the

  15. resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  16. If you traveled the world, you could

  17. visit the graves of kings,

  18. prophets, generals, rulers,

  19. philosophers, religious leaders. But

  20. when you come to Jesus, the testimony of

  21. scripture is clear that the tomb is

  22. empty. The angel declared, as we saw in

  23. our scripture reading this morning in

  24. Matthew 28:es 5 and 6, the angel

  25. answered and said to the woman, the

  26. women, "Do not be afraid, for I know

  27. that you seek Jesus who was crucified.

  28. He is not here, for he is risen as he

  29. said, come see the place where the Lord

  30. lay." And Luke records in the account of

  31. Luke 24:es 5-7. Then as they were afraid

  32. and bowed their face to the earth, they

  33. said to them, "Why do you seek the

  34. living among the dead? He is not here,

  35. but is risen. Remember how he spoke to

  36. you when he was still in Galilee,

  37. saying, "The Son of Man must be

  38. delivered into the hands of sinful men

  39. and be crucified and the third day rise

  40. again." friends, because the tomb is

  41. empty, the resurrection changes

  42. everything.

  43. And that's the message at the heart of 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  44. Corinthians chapter 15. I want to

  45. encourage you to go to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  46. chapter 15 with me this morning. We're

  47. going to spend the majority of our time

  48. obviously in this passage. This is our

  49. text for our lesson this morning. 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  50. Corinthians chapter 15. There's a lot to

  51. cover, so I'm going to get right in to

  52. it because Paul is writing to the

  53. Christians. They had heard the gospel.

  54. They had received the gospel and they

  55. stood in the gospel. That's what you see

  56. in the beginning verses there in verse

  57. one that we're about to look at. But

  58. yet, as you go on through this chapter

  59. and as we will notice that some among

  60. them, they had begun to deny the

  61. resurrection of the dead.

  62. Now understand that was not a minor

  63. misunderstanding because that struck at

  64. the heart of the faith itself.

  65. If you tamper with the resurrection,

  66. you do not merely weaken,

  67. you unravel the gospel.

  68. So the question before us is not simply,

  69. do you believe in Jesus?

  70. Many claim that that. Well, yeah, I

  71. believe in Jesus.

  72. The deeper question that I'm posing this

  73. morning is this. Do you believe that

  74. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was

  75. buried, and rose again the third day

  76. according to the scriptures.

  77. Because if he did, and he did,

  78. the resurrection changes

  79. everything.

  80. Let me give you the first one. What

  81. Paul's talking about here, the

  82. resurrection changes the message that we

  83. preach,

  84. the message we teach. 1 Corinthians 15,

  85. look at verses 1 and two. Prove all

  86. things according to God's word, not DJs.

  87. Look at it for yourselves. Paul said,

  88. "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you

  89. the gospel which I preached to you,

  90. which also you received, and which you

  91. stand, by which you also you are saved,

  92. if you hold fast that word which I

  93. believe, which I preached to you, unless

  94. you believed in vain."

  95. It is striking that Paul reminds

  96. Christians of the gospel because

  97. sometimes we treat the gospel like it's

  98. only for the lost.

  99. Wow. What are we doing? We think, well,

  100. it's just a simply a message we preach

  101. to get someone into Christ.

  102. What's Paul doing here? He's reminding

  103. us that the gospel is not merely the

  104. entrance into the life of Christ. It is

  105. the foundation of the Christian life.

  106. Look at this.

  107. It is the message we what receive.

  108. It's the truth in which we stand,

  109. by which we are saved.

  110. Now, look at this next part. Y'all

  111. ready? I like putting things in boxes.

  112. Y'all know that, right? I'm going to use

  113. a circle this time. If If you hold fast

  114. that word,

  115. there it is. Y'all see how that all

  116. fits? You said, "Well, we just got to

  117. use this to get people INTO CHRIST." NO,

  118. THIS IS the Christian life.

  119. This is it.

  120. It's all encompassing. And Paul goes on

  121. to state the gospel plainly. Look at

  122. this in verses three and four. For I

  123. deliver to you first of all that which I

  124. also received, that Christ died for our

  125. sins according to the scriptures. And

  126. that he was buried and that he rose

  127. again the third day. What's the rest of

  128. it? according to the scriptures. Y'all

  129. remember prophecy series, right?

  130. Yep. It was all there, wasn't it? Told

  131. many, many moons ago, as we would say,

  132. friends, that's the gospel. Christ died.

  133. Christ was buried. Christ rose again. He

  134. did not merely die as well, a good man.

  135. He died for our sins. Isaiah 53, the

  136. suffering savior, talks about that. The

  137. whole chapter is prophesying of Jesus.

  138. Who was Jesus? Who is he today?

  139. 1 Peter 2:21- 24. Look at it.

    1 Peter 2:21–24

  140. What does that mean for us today?

  141. Peter says, "For this, to this you were

  142. called because Christ also suffered for

  143. us, leaving us an example that you

  144. should follow his steps. who committed

  145. no sin, nor was deceit found in his

  146. mouth, who when he was reviled did not

  147. revile and return. When he suffered, he

  148. did not threaten, but committed himself.

  149. To him who judges righteously, who

  150. himself bore our sins in his own body on

  151. the tree, that we having died to sins

  152. might live for righteousness. By whose

  153. stripes you were healed, friends, what

  154. we're seeing, he was not merely gone

  155. from sight. He was buried.

  156. He did not merely live on in memory. He

  157. rose again.

  158. And Paul says all this happened

  159. according

  160. to the scriptures.

  161. So what he this is not an accident. This

  162. not some unforeseen thing.

  163. This was not history that's just

  164. spinning out of control. This was the

  165. eternal purpose of God unfolding exactly

  166. as he had promised. As I mentioned,

  167. Isaiah foretold the suffering of the

  168. Messiah in Isaiah 53. Even

  169. David, David spoke of the holy one not

  170. seeing corruption. In Psalm 16 and verse

  171. 10,

  172. Jesus himself had foretold his death,

  173. burial, and resurrection.

  174. Even using that of Jonah

  175. talking about that

  176. that means the message we preach is not

  177. merely the death of Christ. It is the

  178. death, burial, and resurrection of

  179. Christ.

  180. Paul's saying we're not we're not

  181. preaching a defeated hero.

  182. Paul's saying we're not announcing a

  183. fallen teacher. Paul's saying we're not

  184. we're not clinging to the memory of a

  185. dead reformer.

  186. He says, "We're proclaiming a living

  187. savior."

  188. Let me share something with you. One of

  189. the dangers we face today

  190. is allowing familiar truth

  191. to become ordinary truth. Y'all know

  192. what that means?

  193. It's possible to grow numb.

  194. We've heard the gospel preached. How

  195. many times do you think you've heard the

  196. gospel preached in your life? Older than

  197. me now? Probably a lot, right?

  198. We've heard the gospel message. Is it

  199. possible that we can lose our awe?

  200. Is it possible

  201. that we can lose our wonder? And we sing

  202. about the cross, we speak of the tomb,

  203. we partake of the Lord's supper, and the

  204. majesty of it can begin to fade in our

  205. minds.

  206. Now, I was talking about, you know,

  207. Colorado, going to Colorado from time to

  208. time. We go about every year, go to the

  209. same place every year. I remember when I

  210. first saw a mountain for the first time.

  211. I mean, I've seen them on pictures,

  212. okay? But when you actually go and you

  213. see a mountain and you're standing at

  214. the base of it, it is just

  215. wow. But you know the people in

  216. Colorado,

  217. they wake up,

  218. it's a mountain. They don't even think

  219. about the mountain anymore, right? It's

  220. like a person who who lives by the by

  221. the sea even the ocean. Visitors come

  222. and stand in all we we go to the people

  223. come. I'm going to come to the ocean. We

  224. live next to the Gulf.

  225. We see the waves,

  226. right?

  227. But visitors come and they stand in awe

  228. of of the waves. But the family sees it

  229. every day who lives there and eventually

  230. walks past it without even looking. Why

  231. is that? Because

  232. it's become ordinary.

  233. We do that spiritually whether we

  234. realize it or not. We can become so

  235. accustomed

  236. that we stop marveling at it anymore.

  237. But I'm going to submit to you, we must

  238. never get over the gospel. Paul made it

  239. clear in Galatians 6:14. But God forbid

    Galatians 6:14

  240. that I should boast except in the cross

  241. of our Lord Jesus Christ by whom the

  242. world has been crucified to me and I to

  243. the world. He says we must never get

  244. over the cross ever.

  245. Paul would tell Ephesians, brother in

  246. Ephesians 1 and verse 7, you don't ever

  247. get over the blood because in him we

  248. have redemption through his blood, the

  249. forgiveness of sins according to the

  250. riches of his grace. You don't get over

  251. that.

  252. You know what else you don't get over?

  253. You don't get over the empty tomb as we

  254. read about Matthew 28:es 5 and 6. You

  255. don't get over that.

  256. Now, this leads us to the next great

  257. truth because if the if the resurrection

  258. changes the the message that we preach,

  259. then it also changes the meaning of the

  260. faith that we profess.

  261. Isn't it true?

  262. Look at verse 12 of 1 Corinthians 15.

  263. Now, if Christ is preached that he has

  264. been raised from the dead, how do some

  265. among you say that there is no

  266. resurrection of the dead?

  267. Now, Paul reasons through some

  268. consequences here

  269. because he says in effect, let us follow

  270. that false teaching no more. Now, I'm

  271. paraphrasing that, okay?

  272. But what he says there in verse 13,

  273. follow it through. He says, "But if

  274. there is no resurrection of the dead,

  275. then Christ is not risen."

  276. And what he's saying, if Christ is not

  277. risen, everything collapses.

  278. Everything.

  279. What's he mean by that? Look at this.

  280. Look at these next few verses. Verse 14.

  281. Look at it. And if Christ is not risen,

  282. what happened to our preaching? What

  283. happened to our teaching? Our preaching

  284. is empty and your faith is also empty.

  285. That's what he's saying, isn't it? Plain

  286. and simple.

  287. Look what he says in verses 15 and 16.

  288. Yes. And we are found false witnesses of

  289. God because we have testified of God

  290. that he raised up Christ whom he did not

  291. raise up. If in fact the dead do not

  292. rise. For if the dead do not rise, then

  293. Christ is not risen. He's saying we as

  294. apostles

  295. who have seen the risen Christ,

  296. if that be the case that that he had not

  297. risen as you're saying there's no

  298. resurrection of the dead, then guess

  299. what?

  300. We're false witnesses.

  301. Look at verse 17. He takes to another

  302. level. And if Christ is not risen, your

  303. faith is feudal. YOU ARE STILL IN YOUR

  304. SINS.

  305. Now that hits home, doesn't it?

  306. Because verse 18, he says, "Then also

  307. those who have fallen asleep in Christ

  308. have perished." Oh, wait a second.

  309. When he says fallen asleep, you know

  310. what that means? The people before them

  311. that have died,

  312. those who have fallen asleep in Christ,

  313. they've perished.

  314. If that be the case, then in this life

  315. only, we have hope in Christ, we are of

  316. all men the most pitable.

  317. You look at all those verses, you know

  318. what you just you just saw? What a

  319. devastating conclusion.

  320. Because you remove the resurrection and

  321. Christianity becomes a shell with no

  322. substance at all.

  323. It would be like receiving a a

  324. beautifully wrapped gift box covered in

  325. fine paper and tied with a ribbon and I

  326. say polished on the outside, but when

  327. you open it, there's nothing inside of

  328. it.

  329. And that's just it. Because without the

  330. resurrection, it may be attractive on

  331. the outside, but it's empty on the

  332. inside. Because if Christ is not risen,

  333. what did Paul just lay out for us?

  334. There's no victory in the gospel.

  335. There's no forgiveness in his blood.

  336. There's no hope beyond the grave.

  337. There's no reason for sacrifice. There's

  338. no reason to endure. There's no savior

  339. to trust.

  340. Then what are we doing?

  341. We just took the whole purpose of life.

  342. Even

  343. it's nothing. But Paul does not leave

  344. the church in that darkness. Because

  345. I'll submit to you that in one of the

  346. greatest turning points in all the

  347. Bible, he says this in verse 20. Look at

  348. it. But now Christ is risen from the

  349. dead.

  350. Christ is risen from the dead.

  351. Thanks be to God for that.

  352. There are those today, still today, that

  353. question this.

  354. Skeptics still today are mocking it.

  355. Unbelievers may deny it,

  356. but I'll submit to you, none of their

  357. denial changes

  358. this fact. Christ is risen from the

  359. dead. The tomb is empty because death

  360. could not hold him. As Peter made

  361. abundantly clear in the first gospel

  362. sermon delivered on the day of Pentecost

  363. in Acts 2 and verse 24, the grave

  364. clothes as recorded in John 20:es 6-8,

  365. they were left behind because this was

  366. not mere resuscitation. It was

  367. resurrection.

  368. The stone was rolled away not merely so

  369. Jesus could get out, but so the

  370. witnesses could see in. Isn't that what

  371. we saw in Matthew 28 5 and 6?

  372. You see what Paul did? If you back up in

  373. 1 Corinthians 15 and you look at verses

  374. 5-8, look what else he did.

  375. He says, "We're not the only ones who

  376. witnessed."

  377. He says he was seen, talking about

  378. Jesus,

  379. then by the 12. After that, he was seen

  380. by over 500 brethren at once, of whom

  381. the greater part remained to the

  382. present. There were more.

  383. Now some had fallen asleep, some had

  384. died. After that he was seen by James

  385. and by all the apostles. Then last of

  386. all he was seen by me also as one as by

  387. one born out of due time.

  388. Paul is saying look this is eyewitness

  389. testimony.

  390. This is not a rumor whispered in secret.

  391. This is historical fact seen by many and

  392. testified openly.

  393. Christianity is not built on fantasy.

  394. It is built on a risen Christ.

  395. So the resurrection changes the meaning

  396. of our faith

  397. because our faith is not built on

  398. sentiment. Our faith is not built on

  399. some kind of wishful thinking that we

  400. may have.

  401. Our faith is built on a living Christ.

  402. Let me show you. Our preaching is not

  403. empty because we preach a living savior.

  404. Our worship is not empty because we

  405. worship a reigning king. No, that's what

  406. Paul says in Ephesians 1:es 20- 23.

  407. Which he worked in Christ when he raised

  408. him from the dead and seated him at his

  409. right hand in the heavenly places far

  410. above all principality and power and

  411. might and dominion in every name that is

  412. named, not only in this age, but also in

  413. that which is to come. And he put all

  414. things under his feet and gave him to be

  415. head over all things to the church,

  416. which is his body, the fullness of him

  417. who fills all in all.

  418. He reigns

  419. sitting at the right hand of the throne

  420. of God.

  421. So our preaching, our worship, but what

  422. about our prayers? They're not empty. We

  423. talked about prayer this morning in our

  424. Bible class because we prayed through a

  425. living high priest. Hebrews 7:25 records

    Hebrews 7:25

  426. that

  427. that he talking about Jesus is also able

  428. to save to the uttermost those who come

  429. to God through him since he always lives

  430. to make intercession for them.

  431. And our hope is not empty because it

  432. rest on a living Lord.

  433. First Peter 1:es 3 and 4. Blessed be the

  434. God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  435. who according to his abundant mercy has

  436. begotten us again. Look at those words.

  437. To a living hope

  438. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  439. from the dead to an inheritance

  440. incredible, undefiled, and that does not

  441. fade away, reserved in heaven for you.

  442. That's what our faith is built on.

  443. I'm asking you about your faith. Is that

  444. what your faith is built on?

  445. Now look what Paul does next.

  446. If the resurrection changes the meaning

  447. of our faith, then it also changes the

  448. way that we actually face death.

  449. Y'all remember in verse 20, we noted a

  450. moment ago when he said, "Christ is

  451. risen, right?" What else did he say in

  452. that passage?

  453. And has become the first fruits of those

  454. who have fallen asleep.

  455. There's a word here that in your studies

  456. you have seen probably a couple of times

  457. and that is the word first fruits. And

  458. it's very rich with meaning because when

  459. you go back and look under the old uh

  460. testament system, the first fruits were

  461. the first part of the harvest presented

  462. to God. And it served as the pledge that

  463. more harvest was to come. And you'll see

  464. that one of the places you'll notice

  465. that in Leviticus chapter 23:es 10 and

  466. 11 as well as verse 17. So when Paul

  467. says Christ is the first fruits, he

  468. means the resurrection of Jesus is the

  469. guarantee

  470. that his people will also be raised.

  471. Now

  472. there are other people that were raised

  473. from the dead in the Bible. We know that

  474. uh Lazarus might be one that comes to

  475. our mind in John chap 11. Uh Jarius's

  476. daughter uh is one. Mark chapter 5

    Mark 5:35–42

  477. verses 35-42.

  478. You also find the widow's son in Luke 7.

  479. What's the difference though?

  480. They were raised

  481. from the dead

  482. only to die again.

  483. There's a difference.

  484. What we find in the scriptures is that

  485. Jesus rose never to die again. Romans 6

  486. and verse9 is one of those places you'll

  487. find that makes that clear knowing that

  488. Christ having been raised from the dead

  489. dies no more. Death no longer has

  490. dominion over him. Romans 6 and verse 9.

  491. His resurrection was final. It was

  492. victorious and permanent.

  493. that changes the way we face death

  494. ourselves.

  495. How does Paul explain it?

  496. Verse 21 and 22 of 1 Corinthians 15. For

  497. since by man came death, by man also

  498. came the resurrection of the dead. For

  499. as in Adam all die, even so in Christ

  500. all shall be made alive.

  501. And you know in our shadows of substance

  502. series we talked about Adam and Jesus.

  503. Adam who opened the door to death.

  504. Christ opened the door to life.

  505. Now death is still painful. Death is

  506. still an enemy that Paul goes on to talk

  507. about in verse 26 of our text. Death

  508. still brings tears. Jesus himself wept

  509. over the death of Lazarus. Death still

  510. leaves empty places in aching hearts.

  511. But for the Christian, death is not the

  512. end of the story, is it?

  513. Because without Christ, death is a

  514. locked door.

  515. With Christ, death is a doorway.

  516. Without Christ, death is final

  517. separation. There's no hope. With Christ

  518. though, death is a temporary departure.

  519. That's how Paul even explains it in 1

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  520. Thessalonians chapter 4. Without Christ,

  521. death ends hope. There is no hope. With

  522. Christ, what death does ushers in hope

  523. fulfilled.

  524. That is why Paul could tell the

  525. Thessalonians that we don't sorrow as

  526. those who have no hope. Y'all notice

  527. that verses 13 and 14. He said, 'I don't

  528. want you to be ignorant, brethren,

  529. concerning those who have fallen asleep,

  530. those who died, lest you sorrow as

  531. others who have no hope. For if we

  532. believe that Jesus died and rose again,

  533. even so God will bring with him those

  534. who sleep in Jesus.

  535. He did not say Christians do not sorrow.

  536. He says, "We do not sorrow as those

  537. who have no hope."

  538. Because friends, I'm going to tell you

  539. something. Tears and hope can live in

  540. the same heart.

  541. For the Christian, the grave is not a

  542. prison cell.

  543. It's a waiting place for the

  544. resurrection. That's what the scriptures

  545. make abundantly clear. But Paul says

  546. there's an order. What's the order? You

  547. see Christ the first fruits. Afterward

  548. those who are Christ at his coming

  549. and then comes the end when death itself

  550. will be destroyed. Look at verses 24-

  551. 26. Look at then comes the end when he

  552. delivers the kingdom to God the Father.

  553. When he puts an end to all rule and all

  554. authority and power, for he must reign

  555. till he has put all enemies under his

  556. feet, the last enemy that will be

  557. destroyed is dead.

  558. What an amazing promise that is.

  559. Because you know what's going to happen

  560. is we're all going to die. Y'all know

  561. that, right? I think we've come to that

  562. conclusion in our lives. Hebrews 9 and

  563. verse 27 is appointed man once to die

  564. and after this the judgment. Scriptures

  565. make that abundantly clear. We know

  566. that's what's going to happen to us

  567. as we live upon this earth or the Lord

  568. comes again. We're all going to die

  569. until his coming.

  570. That's sad definitely. But for the one

  571. who is in the kingdom, it changes

  572. everything

  573. because the body that is weak will be

  574. raised in power. Isn't that what verse

  575. 43 goes on to say? Look at it. 1

    1 Corinthians 15:43

  576. Corinthians 15 verse 43. It is sown in

  577. dishonor. It is raised in glory. It is

  578. sown in weakness. It is raised in what?

  579. Power.

  580. The body that is corruptible which we

  581. know that

  582. will be put will put on incorruption.

  583. Look at verse 42. 42. So also is the

  584. resurrection of the dead. The body is

  585. sown incorruption. It is raised in

  586. incorruption.

  587. Look at verse 53.

  588. For this corruptible must put on

  589. incorruptible

  590. and this mortal must put on immortality.

  591. There it is. This mortal will put on

  592. immortality.

  593. That is why the resurrection changes the

  594. way we face death. The cemetery is not

  595. the end of the faithful, friends.

  596. Because he lives, those who are in

  597. Christ shall live also.

  598. Isn't that what John 14 verse 19 tells

    John 14:19

  599. us? A little while longer and the world

  600. will see me no more, but you will see

  601. me. Because I live, you will live also.

  602. Friends, with such a truth before us,

  603. then the resurrection does not merely ch

  604. change the way that we die.

  605. It changes the way we live right now.

  606. You know, sometimes people treat the

  607. resurrection as though it only matters

  608. at funerals.

  609. Some will would even say that it's only

  610. a doctrine for cemeteries, grief, and

  611. the end of life.

  612. But Paul shows that the resurrection has

  613. present power.

  614. Because in the section of verses 29 down

  615. through verse 32, Paul is arguing

  616. when he says otherwise, what will they

  617. do who are baptized for the dead if the

  618. dead do not rise at all? Why then are

  619. they baptized for the dead? And why do

  620. we stand in jeopardy every hour? I

  621. affirm by the boasting in you which I

  622. have in Christ Jesus OUR LORD. I DIED

  623. DAILY. If in the manner of men I have

  624. fought with beasts at Ephesus, what

  625. advantage is it to me? If the dead do

  626. not rise, let us eat and drink, for

  627. tomorrow we die.

  628. He says, if there's no resurrection,

  629. then why be baptized? Why face danger?

  630. Why suffer? Why sacrifice? Why endure

  631. persecution?

  632. Why not simply say, "Let us eat and

  633. drink, for tomorrow we die?"

  634. Because if there's no resurrection,

  635. friends, selfish living makes sense. You

  636. know it. If there's no resurrection,

  637. sacrifice is absolutely foolish.

  638. If there's no resurrection, holiness is

  639. unnecessary.

  640. And if there's no resurrection, worldly

  641. pleasure becomes the logical aim of

  642. life.

  643. But what Paul is saying, Christ

  644. being raised from the dead,

  645. everything changes.

  646. Because baptism means union with a

  647. living savior.

  648. Look at Romans 6:es 3-5. Now Romans 6

  649. 3-5.

  650. Or do you not know that as many of us as

  651. were baptized into Christ Jesus were

  652. baptized into his death. Therefore, we

  653. were buried with him through baptism

  654. into death, that just as Christ was

  655. raised from the dead by the glory of the

  656. Father, even so we also should walk in

  657. newness of life. For if we have been

  658. united together in the likeness of his

  659. death, certainly we also shall be in the

  660. likeness of, look at it, his

  661. resurrection.

  662. Baptism is not a burial into

  663. hopelessness.

  664. It is a burial with expectation. We rise

  665. because he rose.

  666. What does that mean for us right now?

  667. The resurrection changes the way we live

  668. right now. What that means, the

  669. scriptures make it abundantly clear in 1

  670. Peter 1:es 15 and 16. Holiness matters.

  671. Holiness matters.

  672. What did Peter say in 1 Peter 1:es 15

  673. and 16? But as he who called you as

  674. holy, you also be holy in all your

  675. conduct because it is written, be holy,

  676. for I am holy.

  677. It matters that we are separate and

  678. apart from the world.

  679. You know what else it means? It means

  680. self-denial matters. Jesus in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  681. chapter 9 and verse 23, he said to them

  682. all, "If anyone desires to come after

  683. me, let him deny himself and take up his

  684. cross daily and follow me." Is that what

  685. the resurrection means to us today?

  686. Right now, we can read the scriptures

  687. and I can go I can give you more than

  688. what I gave you this morning.

  689. But friends, knowing the scriptures and

  690. applying them and living them are two

  691. separate things.

  692. separate.

  693. I can know this Bible from front to

  694. back, but if I don't apply it, it don't

  695. mean anything.

  696. If I truly believe in the resurrection

  697. of Jesus Christ, as there are many that

  698. would claim that today,

  699. show it by the way you live your life

  700. because the scriptures make it clear.

  701. And what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15,

  702. holiness matters, self-denial matters,

  703. and steadfastness matters. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:58

  704. 15 verse 58. Look at it. Laboring.

  705. Laboring. Verse 58. I know that word

  706. right there or something, ain't it?

  707. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be

  708. steadfast and move always abounding in

  709. the work of the Lord, knowing that your

  710. labor is not in vain in the Lord.

  711. It's not in vain in the Lord.

  712. But let me share something else with

  713. you.

  714. Paul gives a warning. Do you know that

  715. warning in 1 Corinthians uh chapter uh

  716. 15:es

  717. 33 and 34?

  718. He goes on. He says, "Now don't be

  719. deceived.

  720. Evil company corrupts good habits. Awake

  721. to righteousness and do not sin, for

  722. some do not have the knowledge of God. I

  723. speak this to your shame.

  724. Do you ever notice that there's a

  725. connection here?

  726. Wrong doctrine leads to wrong living.

  727. When a man stops believing in

  728. resurrection,

  729. he soon stops living in preparation for

  730. eternity.

  731. Because here's the fact. Belief shapes

  732. behavior.

  733. Mark that one down. Belief shapes

  734. behavior. Because if I truly believe

  735. that Christ rose, then I cannot live

  736. like this world is all that there is.

  737. If I truly believe Christ rose from the

  738. dead, I cannot play with sin. If I truly

  739. believe that Christ rose from the dead,

  740. then I cannot treat worship lightly. If

  741. I truly believe that Christ arose, then

  742. I cannot place earthly things above

  743. eternal things. That's what Colossians 3

  744. talks about. Set your affections on

  745. things above, not on things of this

  746. earth. Friends, we often say he is

  747. risen.

  748. But the harder question is, are we

  749. living like we believe

  750. he is risen?

  751. Look at all these things that I'm

  752. sharing with you this morning.

  753. The resurrection should affect how I

  754. talk. What Ephesians 4 verse 29 say? Oh

    Ephesians 4:29

  755. yes,

  756. it should affect what I think about. And

  757. Paul talked about things that are good,

  758. things that are lovely, things of good

  759. report. Think on these things he talks

  760. about there. It should affect what I

  761. pursue.

  762. Seek you first the kingdom of God and

  763. his righteousness, and all these things

  764. shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:33.

    Matthew 6:33

  765. It should affect how I suffer.

  766. Things that happen here suffer. That's

  767. temporary.

  768. It should affect how I endure as James 1

  769. and verse 12 says, "And friends,

  770. ultimately it should affect how I

  771. prepare for eternity.

  772. One who believes in the resurrection

  773. cannot be comfortable living chain to

  774. this world.

  775. It's It's like a traveler who has a

  776. ticket in his hand and a destination's

  777. ahead of him, but instead of preparing

  778. for their departure, they just sit down

  779. in the dirt by the tracks and starts

  780. building as if he intends to stay

  781. forever.

  782. Sounds silly, doesn't it?

  783. Then what good's the ticket?

  784. But that's the way people live

  785. spiritually

  786. because we we can become so attached to

  787. this world

  788. that we live

  789. careless

  790. about the world to come.

  791. The resurrection changes the way we live

  792. because it lifts our eyes higher. Isn't

  793. that what Paul was expressing and

  794. emphasizing in 1 Corinthians 15?

  795. Let me end with this.

  796. Paul's argument presses us to this great

  797. climax that the resurrection does not

  798. merely change our message, our faith,

  799. our death, our life. It changes the way

  800. we actually see Jesus himself.

  801. You see, there's a fear beneath many

  802. other fears. And again, we talk about it

  803. briefly, and that's the fear of death.

  804. But Hebrews 2 talks about of those who

  805. through fear of death were all their

  806. lifetimes subject to bondage. People may

  807. hide it, hide behind activity, ambition,

  808. pleasure or distraction. They might hide

  809. it in such a way, but the fear is there.

  810. But when we think about Jesus who walked

  811. straight into death and came out

  812. victorious

  813. that that's why the the raising of

  814. Lazarus is so powerful in Luke 11 verse

    Luke 11:25

  815. 25 Jesus said to Martha look listen this

  816. is what he said I am the resurrection

  817. and the life he who believes in me

  818. though he may die he shall live

  819. and then in that same chapter Jesus

  820. stood before the tomb of Lazarus and

  821. called Lazarus forth. Look at verse 43

  822. and 44. Now when he had said these

  823. things, he cried with a loud voice,

  824. "Lazarus, come forth." And he who had

  825. died came out bound hand and foot with

  826. grave clothes, and his face was wrapped

  827. with a cloth. Jesus said to him, "Loose

  828. him and let him go."

  829. What does that passage prove to us?

  830. Jesus did not merely claim to be the

  831. resurrection and the life. He

  832. demonstrated his power over death.

  833. That miracle was a sign pointing to

  834. something even greater.

  835. What was that?

  836. His own resurrection and the hope of all

  837. who believe in him. Because when Jesus

  838. said, "I am the resurrection and the

  839. life,"

  840. he was not speaking empty comfort. He

  841. was speaking divine certainty

  842. because the resurrection declares who

  843. Jesus is. He's not merely a teacher,

  844. friends. He's not merely a moral example

  845. that we admire. He's not merely a

  846. historical figure.

  847. He is the son of the living God

  848. declared with power by the resurrection

  849. from the dead. He is Lord. He is the

  850. Christ. He is the resurrection of the

  851. life. And my friends, the world may

  852. offer philosophies. They may offer

  853. systems and leaders and human wisdom,

  854. but only Jesus Christ himself conquered

  855. the grave.

  856. And only Jesus can say, "Because I live,

  857. you will live also."

  858. So the resurrection changes the way we

  859. see Christ. He is not merely someone to

  860. admire.

  861. He is the risen Lord to obey.

  862. I certainly appreciate your kind

  863. attention this morning as I had a lot to

  864. cover and there's certainly more that 1

  865. Corinthians 15 shares with us that I do

  866. not have the time to get into.

  867. But I hope that the point has been made

  868. in this lesson

  869. because I come right back to the title.

  870. Title of this lesson that I chose was

  871. the resurrection changes everything.

  872. It changes the message we preach. It

  873. changes the meaning of our faith. It

  874. changes the way we face death. It

  875. changes the way we live right now. And

  876. it changes the way we see Jesus.

  877. The tomb is still empty.

  878. Still empty after all the attacks on

  879. unbelief.

  880. Still empty after all the mockery of

  881. skeptics.

  882. Still empty after the passing of

  883. centuries.

  884. Still empty through empires that have

  885. risen and fallen.

  886. Still empty. Though critics have written

  887. their books and doubters have made their

  888. arguments,

  889. that tomb is still empty because Jesus

  890. Christ is alive.

  891. And because he is alive, the gospel is

  892. still true. Faith is still meaningful.

  893. Hope is still alive. Death is still

  894. defeated in Christ. And heaven is still

  895. real.

  896. So the question is not whether the tomb

  897. is empty.

  898. Heaven has already answered that for us.

  899. The question is whether your heart is

  900. empty of the risen savior.

  901. John 11 26 and whoever lives and

  902. believes in me shall never die. Do you

  903. believe this?

  904. That question rest upon your heart right

  905. now. I'm asking you from the word of

  906. God.

  907. Do you believe this?

  908. Not merely as a fact to acknowledge on

  909. this Sunday morning,

  910. but as a truth to obey,

  911. not merely as a doctrine to discuss with

  912. others, but as the foundation of your

  913. life today.

  914. Not merely as a message for one Sunday,

  915. but as a hope of every day that you

  916. live.

  917. Because friends, if you believe that

  918. Jesus Christ is the son of the living

  919. God, then you give him your life.

  920. There are people

  921. numbers

  922. that know

  923. about the resurrection.

  924. And they can know God's plan of

  925. salvation is presented every Sunday

  926. morning and every Sunday evening and

  927. every Wednesday night.

  928. They can know this,

  929. but it hasn't changed

  930. the way that they live. Hasn't changed

  931. them submitting to it.

  932. It's just simple acknowledgement.

  933. I'm saying if you really believe that

  934. Jesus Christ is son living God, if you

  935. believe it,

  936. will you act upon it? Will you do

  937. something with it?

  938. Will you repent of your sins? Will you

  939. confess his name before men? Will you be

  940. buried with him in baptism for the

  941. remission of sins as we saw in Romans 6

  942. 3 and 4? Will you rise to walk in

  943. newness of life as that passage says?

  944. Will you live with that hope of eternal

  945. life within you every day that you live

  946. serving the King of all kings, the Lord

  947. of all lords?

  948. I hope that you'll make that decision

  949. today because all things stand ready.

  950. You just have to come.

  951. If you have wandered

  952. from him, you can come home to the one

  953. who conquered death. If you're weary,

  954. you can anchor your soul again in the

  955. risen Christ. If you're struggling, you

  956. remember that because he lives, there is

  957. hope beyond the grave and strength for

  958. the present hour. Because friends, the

  959. resurrection changes everything.

  960. And life, real life, eternal life,

  961. victorious life is only found in Jesus

  962. Christ.

  963. What a wonderful song that we have for

  964. our song of encouragement.

  965. You seek Jesus who was crucified. He's

  966. not here for he is risen. Are you

  967. serving a risen savior?

  968. If you're subject to the invitation

  969. called, won't you come as we stand and

  970. sing the song that's been selected?
