  1. This evening, I encourage you to go to

  2. the Old Testament book of First Kings.

  3. First Kings.

  4. And as I always like to remind, make

  5. sure to prove all things according to

  6. God's word, not DJs.

  7. This lesson this evening, uh the kids

  8. just started a new quarter. uh some of

  9. the Bible class teachers did swap up a

  10. little bit. Uh but uh the quarter has

  11. changed to talking about Old Testament

  12. in which as you know I commonly like to

  13. go and do those lessons that coincide

  14. with what the kids are learning to

  15. reinforce what they've learned starting

  16. today and for us adults to be reminded

  17. of these very valuable lessons that we

  18. even learned when we were younger. Um

  19. there are some biblical characters whose

  20. lives leave us inspired.

  21. There are others that leave us warned.

  22. Interestingly, it is the very life of

  23. Solomon that does both.

  24. When we first meet Solomon as king,

  25. there is so much promise. Uh he's the

  26. son of David. Uh he's chosen to sit on

  27. the throne. He loves the Lord. He asks

  28. for wisdom instead of wealth. He builds

  29. the temple. He becomes known throughout

  30. the world for wisdom,

  31. insight,

  32. greatness.

  33. But if you had looked at Solomon early

  34. on in his reign, you might have said,

  35. "Surely this man

  36. will be faithful

  37. all his days."

  38. And yet the account of his life does not

  39. end the way we would expect. The man who

  40. asked God for wisdom, you know what he

  41. did? He made some foolish spiritual

  42. choices.

  43. The man who built the temple

  44. also built high places for idols.

  45. The man who was admired by the nations

  46. allowed his own heart to be turned from

  47. God, the very God who had blessed him.

  48. That's why this sermon

  49. bears the title, "When wisdom wasn't

  50. enough,

  51. because Solomon teaches us a truth we

  52. dare not miss, that it is possible to

  53. know much and still fall.

  54. It is possible to have blessings and

  55. still drift. It's possible to start with

  56. a tender heart toward God and later

  57. allow or permit that heart to become

  58. divided.

  59. And that's what makes Solomon's life so

  60. relevant. Even his his story is not just

  61. what it's consider.

  62. It's a spiritual warning for every

  63. generation. It's a warning to preachers,

  64. to elders, to parents, to young people,

  65. to seasoned Christians and new converts

  66. alike.

  67. Because Solomon reminds us that the

  68. greatest danger is not merely ignorance.

  69. Sometimes the greatest danger is

  70. thinking that because we know what is

  71. right, we are somehow safe even if we

  72. stop doing what is right.

  73. Now I'll tell you wisdom is a wonderful

  74. gift. It's a wonderful thing. Knowledge

  75. is a blessing. Understanding is quite

  76. valuable. But wisdom by itself is not

  77. enough if the heart is not guarded, if

  78. obedience is not maintained, and if

  79. faithfulness is not continued. And so

  80. for this evening, I want us to walk

  81. through the life of Solomon.

  82. We're going to hit on some main points

  83. because there's a lot to cover, but we

  84. want to learn the lessons that God has

  85. preserved for us. What do we take away

  86. from this? And as we do, we ask the

  87. question, not not merely what happened

  88. to Solomon because we're going to find

  89. that out, but the question that we want

  90. to probe in our own hearts, our own

  91. minds, our own lives is what could

  92. happen to me if I do not remain

  93. faithful.

  94. So let's begin with this point. First

  95. Kings chapter 2:es 1-3.

  96. Look at that verse.

  97. Keep now the days of David drew near

  98. that he should die. And he charged

  99. Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of

  100. all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and

  101. prove yourself a man, and keep the

  102. charge of the Lord your God, to walk in

  103. his ways, to keep his statutes, his

  104. commandments, his judgments, and his

  105. testimonies, as it is written in the law

  106. of Moses, that you may prosper in all

  107. that you do, and wherever you turn.

  108. We'll stop there.

  109. I think what we see right off is the

  110. first great lesson from Solomon's life

  111. is that he began with a blessing of

  112. godly instruction. Wouldn't you agree

  113. with that? Uh before David died, we see

  114. there that he called Solomon near spoke

  115. to him not merely as uh as as a king to

  116. a successor uh but as a father to a son.

  117. David knew that he would soon leave this

  118. world. And when a man is about to die,

  119. he does not waste words on what is

  120. shallow, but rather he has some meaning

  121. and some significance that he wants to

  122. share. He speaks of what matters most.

  123. And what mattered most to David was I

  124. want you to notice this. Let me go back

  125. to that verse. Look at that again. What

  126. mattered most to David? Uh was it

  127. military strength? Is that what he's

  128. talking about? Is he talking about

  129. political strategy? Is he talking about

  130. economic stability? Are those the topics

  131. that he has in mind? I think when you

  132. read that you're saying, "No, none of

  133. those."

  134. What mattered most was Solomon's

  135. relationship with God.

  136. Prove yourself

  137. a man and keep the charge of the Lord

  138. your God to walk in his ways, to keep

  139. his statutes, his commandments, his

  140. judgments, and his testimonies. As it is

  141. written in the law of Moses, that you

  142. may prosper in all that you do and

  143. wherever you turn. David understood

  144. something every parent ought to

  145. understand and every child ought to

  146. hear. What is that? The greatest thing

  147. that you can ever pass on is not land.

  148. It's not money. It's not inheritance.

  149. It's a call to walk with God.

  150. David did not say, "Son, make sure

  151. everybody respects you. Son, protect

  152. your image. Son, make sure your rain is

  153. impressive. Son, what's he say? stay

  154. with God.

  155. Why is that? Because David understood

  156. something as well. Not that David was

  157. perfect by any means. We know that just

  158. like we're not.

  159. But David understood this is

  160. foundational stuff here. This is

  161. foundational.

  162. And Solomon, at least early on, listen,

  163. he began with a heart that was open to

  164. truth and receptive to godly counsel.

  165. Let's ask the question, how many people

  166. today have had good instruction?

  167. They taught by faithful parents,

  168. sat in Bible classes, they heard sound

  169. preaching, they were warned about

  170. temptations and compromise and

  171. worldliness, and the topics could go on

  172. and on. They know what God says.

  173. The issue is not always lack of

  174. instruction. Sometimes the issue is

  175. failure to continue continue listening

  176. to what we have already been told

  177. because I'll submit to you there is a

  178. profound difference between hearing

  179. counsel and holding to counsel.

  180. There's a distinct difference in those.

  181. Many people admire truth while they are

  182. young.

  183. Many respect godly teaching while life

  184. is simple.

  185. But when power grows or success comes,

  186. when temptations increase and when pride

  187. begins to whisper in their ear, their

  188. heart, their mind, then what was once

  189. heard with humility can be set aside

  190. with indifference. That's how it works.

  191. So we never underestimate the value of

  192. godly instruction. Because I think if

  193. you can say this, if you've had a

  194. faithful father, mother, grandparents,

  195. elder, teacher, preacher, whichever who

  196. pointed you to God, you are thankful to

  197. God for that blessing. I am.

  198. I'll be the first to say it.

  199. But also remember this, instruction only

  200. helps the heart that continues to submit

  201. to it.

  202. And that's what made Solomon's early

  203. life so promising. It starts out

  204. beautiful. He not only received godly

  205. instruction from his father David, but

  206. he also demonstrated something essential

  207. for every servant of God. You know what

  208. that was? He began with godly

  209. instruction. But what we find in first

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  210. kings chapter 3 6 and 7. Look at first

  211. kings 3 6 and 7.

  212. And Solomon said, "You have shown great

  213. mercy to your servant David, my father,

  214. because he walked before you in truth

  215. and righteousness and an uprightness of

  216. heart with you. You have continued this

  217. great kindness for him, and you have

  218. given him a son to sit on his throne as

  219. it is this day." Now, oh Lord, my God,

  220. you have made your servant king instead

  221. of my father David, but I am a little

  222. child. I do not know how to go out or

  223. come in. You know what's interesting

  224. with that

  225. is when Solomon came to the throne, he

  226. did not uh protect the image of a man

  227. swollen with uh self-confidence. Uh

  228. instead, what he was doing, he confessed

  229. his inadequacy is what he's doing.

  230. And I think that's striking because

  231. think about this. This is a king

  232. speaking. This is a man who is about to

  233. lead a nation. And yet, instead of

  234. pretending, I've got all the answers,

  235. Solomon admits, I'm not enough

  236. for this by myself.

  237. Well, friends, that's what humility

  238. does. Solomon begins with humility. He

  239. understood the weight of leadership. He

  240. understood the the gravity of of of u

  241. responsibility. And he understood that

  242. being placed on a throne does not

  243. magically place wisdom in a heart. And

  244. he knew that if he was going to lead

  245. well, he's going to need help from

  246. above. And that's something beautiful

  247. about that spirit.

  248. Humility is not weakness. Humility is

  249. honest dependence upon God.

  250. James 4 and verse 6 says, "But he gives

  251. more grace." Therefore, he says, "God

  252. resists the proud but gives grace to the

  253. humble."

  254. Let that sink in for a second.

  255. That one of the most dangerous moments

  256. in a Christian's life is when

  257. they stop feeling their need for God.

  258. The person who says, "I know enough," is

  259. already in trouble. We're already in

  260. trouble if we start saying that. Uh the

  261. person who says, "Well, I've heard

  262. enough sermons."

  263. They're already drifting. I can tell you

  264. the person who says, "I can handle this

  265. temptation." Oh, and you're standing on

  266. the edge of spiritual disaster. Do you

  267. hear me? Solomon was safest when he

  268. actually felt small.

  269. And that's a profound lesson. Some

  270. people imagine that maturity means

  271. reaching a point where I don't need as

  272. much prayer or I don't need as much

  273. dependence or I as much searching for

  274. the scriptures.

  275. But real true spiritual maturity does

  276. the very opposite. The more mature a

  277. Christian becomes, the more they realize

  278. how deeply they need God every single

  279. hour, every moment.

  280. As James 4 and verse 6, he gives more

  281. grace.

  282. He says, "God resists the proud but

  283. gives grace to." He goes on to talk

  284. about humble yourselves in the sight of

  285. the Lord and he will lift you up.

  286. Solomon's greatness began not with his

  287. throne. But you know how his greatness

  288. started? It started with his humility.

  289. He was in the right condition to receive

  290. God's blessing because he had not yet

  291. become full of himself. We sometimes not

  292. use those words, full of oneself.

  293. And because Solomon was humble

  294. enough to recognize his need, he made

  295. one of the most beautiful and

  296. God-honoring requests ever uttered by

  297. man.

  298. Solomon asked for wisdom instead of

  299. selfish gain.

  300. You know, when God invited Solomon to

  301. ask what he should give him, Solomon,

  302. you know, he stood at a crossroads few

  303. men would ever know, but he could have

  304. asked for the things that most men spend

  305. their lives chasing.

  306. Of course, think about the wealth,

  307. military dominance, long life, downfall

  308. of your enemy. You know, we could make a

  309. make a list here. But what Solomon asks

  310. for is what would say something deeper.

  311. And what's that in first kings 3:es 8

  312. and n that he asked for. And your

  313. servant is in the midst of your people

  314. whom you have chosen. A great people too

  315. numerous to be numbered or counted.

  316. Therefore give to your servant an

  317. understanding heart to judge your people

  318. that I may discern between good and

  319. evil. For who is able to judge this

  320. great people of yours?

  321. What did he want? Wisdom.

  322. What did he want? Discernment.

  323. He wanted to know how to lead rightly.

  324. And that's a remarkable request. It's

  325. remarkable. It revealed that at this

  326. point in Solomon's life, his concern was

  327. not first for personal comfort or

  328. self-exaltation,

  329. but fulfilling his Godgiven role

  330. faithfully.

  331. You know what says God was pleased?

  332. God was pleased. There is something

  333. deeply moving about a heart that wants

  334. to be useful more than impressive.

  335. Solomon did not ask, "Lord, make me

  336. great." He asked, "Lord, help me do

  337. right.

  338. You know the prayers we pray often

  339. reveal the condition of our hearts. You

  340. ever think about that?

  341. What do most people often ask God for?

  342. A lot of times we can make an easy list.

  343. Comfort, ease,

  344. sometimes more money,

  345. fewer problems. That's that's another

  346. one list.

  347. That could be those.

  348. But think about this other side. Do we

  349. ask him for wisdom to honor him,

  350. the courage to obey him,

  351. and the discernment to choose what is

  352. right?

  353. Now, there is nothing wrong praying for

  354. daily needs,

  355. but Solomon reminds us that the best

  356. prayers are those that seek first

  357. what will help us please God.

  358. You ever think how different our homes

  359. would be if fathers prayed, "Lord, give

  360. me wisdom to lead my family."

  361. You ever think how different marriages

  362. would be if husbands and wives prayed,

  363. "Lord, give us discernment to honor

  364. you."

  365. You ever think how different the church

  366. would be if we all prayed, "Lord, give

  367. us understanding hearts." And again, I

  368. could keep going with a list here,

  369. but I think you get the point.

  370. When Solomon sought first what pleased

  371. God, God blessed him with what he

  372. requested

  373. beyond even. And the principle still

  374. echoes through scripture. The Lord

  375. honors those who truly put him first.

  376. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his

  377. righteousness, and all these things be

  378. added to you. Right? Matthew 6:33.

    Matthew 6:33

  379. The wisdom that Solomon asked for was it

  380. was not hidden away in in private

  381. thought. It it began to

  382. show itself in the way that he lived, in

  383. the way that he ruled so that others

  384. could clearly see God's hand upon him.

  385. That's it. Solom Solomon's wisdom was

  386. visible to others.

  387. Because one of the signs that Solomon

  388. truly had received wisdom from God is

  389. that people actually recognized him. Uh

  390. you think about all the things areas of

  391. his life, his conduct, his his judgment,

  392. his his leadership. What that revealed

  393. was something more than natural

  394. intelligence as he was growing. They

  395. they revealed divine blessing even

  396. because if you go through the scriptures

  397. in in one of Solomon's earliest

  398. demonstrations, you know, and chapter

  399. three of First Kings of God-given

  400. wisdom, we remember this when we talking

  401. about this at the dinner table the other

  402. day, uh was two women came before him.

  403. Y'all remember that one? You know, both

  404. claiming to be the mother of the same

  405. living child. That's a that's

  406. Wow. Bring that one before us, huh? And

  407. one woman explained that both had given

  408. birth. This is in verses 16- 28.

  409. But during the night the other woman's

  410. baby died, she then secretly did what?

  411. She switched the children. She placed

  412. the dead child with the other woman and

  413. taking the living one for herself. Now

  414. there's no witnesses. It became one

  415. woman's again one woman's word against

  416. the other. Okay? She said, she said type

  417. deal.

  418. Now what does Solomon do? It calls for a

  419. sword. That had to be intense. Okay.

  420. And ordered that the living child be

  421. divided in two with half given to each

  422. woman.

  423. I know that though I I kept thinking

  424. about the people that were standing near

  425. going, he what what are you doing? Well,

  426. what happened?

  427. But what did the true mother do

  428. naturally?

  429. The true mother immediately cried out

  430. for the child to be given to the other

  431. woman,

  432. pleading that the baby not be killed.

  433. What did the other woman do? She agreed,

  434. let's divide it.

  435. What did Solomon declare the first woman

  436. to be the real mother? Because her

  437. compassion revealed the truth. The child

  438. was given to her. And when Israel heard

  439. this judgment, they recognized that the

  440. wisdom of God was in Solomon, and they

  441. respected him as king. What is verse 28?

  442. Notice. All Israel heard of the judgment

  443. which the king had rendered, and they

  444. feared the king, for they saw they saw

  445. it was visible that the wisdom of God

  446. was in him to administer justice. Isn't

  447. that what

  448. he prayed for?

  449. to lead the people with discernment.

  450. Again, it didn't stay hidden. They saw

  451. it. It manifests itself in choices, in

  452. responses, in fairness, in perspective,

  453. and again in discernment. That Sodom

  454. became known not merely as a man with

  455. information on his mind, but as a man in

  456. whom the wisdom of God was quite

  457. evident.

  458. Friends, you don't have to tell the

  459. people the sun has risen.

  460. When the sun comes up, the darkness is

  461. pushed back. The landscape is eliminated

  462. and everyone can tell that the light has

  463. arrived. And really, in the same way,

  464. when the wisdom of God governs a life,

  465. it shows it affects how a person talks,

  466. how a person leads, how a person

  467. responds, how a person lives.

  468. Let's ask the questions.

  469. Can people see God's influence upon us?

  470. Do we have such discernment? You know,

  471. we're taught in Hebrews chapter 4 even

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  472. about discerning between that which is

  473. good,

  474. evil,

  475. truth versus error.

  476. Scriptures make it quite quite clear,

  477. doesn't it?

  478. Of what we are told to do with that word

  479. that is sharper than any two-edged sword

  480. that is able to divide.

  481. It tells us, doesn't it? Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  482. 5, we're told in verse 14, "But solid

  483. food belongs to those who are full age,

  484. that is those who by reason of use have

  485. their senses exercise to discern both

  486. good and evil." Where does that come

  487. from?

  488. God's word.

  489. So really, can people see us with such

  490. discernment? Can they see it how we

  491. handle conflict? Can they see it in our

  492. speech? Can they see it in our marriage?

  493. Can they see it with how we make

  494. decisions? Can they see it in what we

  495. prioritize?

  496. What did Jesus say? Let your light so

  497. shine before men that they may see your

  498. good works and glorify your father in

  499. heaven. Matthew 5:1 16. Our faith is not

    Matthew 5:1

  500. intended to be merely claimed. It is

  501. intended to be seen in action.

  502. Now, let me tell you, Solomon's early

  503. life was attractive because it bore

  504. visible evidence of God's wisdom.

  505. The world does not need more people who

  506. merely say they know God. There's a lot

  507. of people that make that claim.

  508. It needs people whose lives display the

  509. fruit of actually walking with him.

  510. Because a person may impress others with

  511. talent, but only godliness leaves the

  512. fragrance of heaven on a life.

  513. And because God's hand was upon Solomon

  514. and is quite evident in just the verses

  515. that we have considered so far, the

  516. blessings in his life, it multiplied

  517. greatly. Yet those blessings, while good

  518. in themselves, would later reveal

  519. another important lesson.

  520. Solomon was blessed beyond

  521. measure.

  522. You know, it's always interesting to

  523. study in the life of Solomon

  524. that he was really his life. It was on a

  525. scale

  526. almost beyond imagination

  527. in this time that he was living. He he

  528. gave God, you know, gave him wisdom and

  529. understanding, peace, prosperity,

  530. influence and and renown. I mean, you

  531. know, go and study Ecclesiastes

  532. first kings 4 and verse 29. Look at

  533. this. And God gave Solomon wisdom and

  534. exceedingly great understanding and

  535. large largest of heart like the sand on

  536. the seashore.

  537. And friends, his wisdom surpassed the

  538. wisdom of the east. His fame spread

  539. among surrounding nations. Y'all

  540. remember the queen of Sheba? She came

  541. from afar and after seeing what God had

  542. done in Solomon's life, she said this.

  543. However, I did not believe the words

  544. until I came and saw with my own eyes

  545. and indeed the half was not told me.

  546. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the

  547. fame of which I heard. First Kings 10

    1 Kings 10:7

  548. verse 7.

  549. That was

  550. how she appraised it.

  551. Solomon's life became an example of what

  552. God can do through a life

  553. truly surrendered to him.

  554. Think about how God gives blessings for

  555. stewardship. We are stewards. There's a

  556. whole series I can do on that one for

  557. sure. Stewards, not self-indulgence.

  558. There's a difference. Okay. He gives

  559. wisdom to God. He gives influence to

  560. serve. He gives resources to glorify

  561. him. Remember Matthew 5 verse 16 we just

    Matthew 5:16

  562. read. He gives opportunities to bless

  563. others.

  564. But I'll tell you one of the greatest

  565. dangers of blessing.

  566. Y'all ready for it?

  567. One of the greatest danger of blessing

  568. is forgetting the blesser.

  569. You know, a full table

  570. can make people forget the hand that

  571. provided the meal.

  572. Yeah. I remember I was thinking about

  573. this the other day, how how often it is.

  574. I I remember, you know, growing up

  575. and, you know, food just magically

  576. appeared on the table. Our kids see that

  577. all the time, too. It's just there. It's

  578. amazing how that works. And of course, I

  579. grew up in a carpenters's household and

  580. I didn't realize how hard it was

  581. for us to make ends meet because that's

  582. not what I saw, right? Until I was

  583. being, you know, dad would wake us up

  584. four o'clock in the mornings during the

  585. summer months, summer when we're out of

  586. school, right? Wake up, we got to beat

  587. the sun.

  588. That was a hard day of roofing is what

  589. that was.

  590. And I realized some things.

  591. I was blessed to have that food on the

  592. table. But you know what? There there

  593. was some work. There were some things

  594. that was going on in the background. I

  595. need to forget that. That was good

  596. reminders, wasn't it?

  597. Thankful that we had that.

  598. But it's easy to forget

  599. because a strong season of life can make

  600. people forget the God who actually

  601. sustained it.

  602. Success can slowly produce the illusion

  603. that we are sufficient in ourselves.

  604. You see, the problem was never that

  605. Solomon was blessed. The problem came

  606. when blessing no longer deepened his

  607. dependence on God.

  608. And that's a warning all in this

  609. passage. Sometimes adversity just drives

  610. us to our knees. But prosperity can make

  611. us careless.

  612. Some people are more likely to pray

  613. fervently

  614. when they're on the mountaintop or the

  615. valley. Which one do you think's the

  616. right answer? The valley.

  617. But let me tell you, both the valley and

  618. mountain are meant to drive us to God.

  619. Because friends, blessings are safest in

  620. the hands of those who still remember

  621. that they are needy.

  622. And nowhere was Solomon's devotion more

  623. visibly expressed in his in his work in

  624. the temple uh for the temple. At his

  625. best, he gave the Lord what was

  626. excellent. But even that highlights

  627. highlights another sobering truth I want

  628. to share with you from his life. Solomon

  629. gave God his best.

  630. But notice this, a good start is not the

  631. same as a faithful finish.

  632. One of Solomon's defining

  633. accomplishments as mentioned was

  634. building of the temple. First Kings

    1 Kings 6:14

  635. 6:14, it says, "So Solomon built the

  636. temple and finished it." Now, he did

  637. that. There's a lot of work that was

  638. involved in that. He oversaw the

  639. construction of a house for the name of

  640. the Lord with really extraordinary care

  641. and beauty and precision and excellence.

  642. I mean go and read all of that. The the

  643. the uh finest materials were used. Great

  644. labor was given. Nothing about it was

  645. careless though. It wasn't

  646. because there was a pattern that

  647. designed that God gave him to do and and

  648. he was doing it and he did it.

  649. And this tells us something really

  650. important. There was a time when

  651. Solomon's heart was truly fixed on

  652. honoring God. He did not treat the

  653. things of God lightly. He gave

  654. attention. He gave effort. He had

  655. excellence in his mind of what belonged

  656. to God.

  657. And I'll tell you that when people value

  658. something so deeply, it shows in what

  659. they are willing to invest.

  660. It's called invested interest. That's

  661. what those two words are. And if a

  662. person truly I mean, think about it. If

  663. you truly treasure a family heirloom,

  664. you may have some of those. How do you

  665. protect it? You let the kids play with

  666. it?

  667. Nope.

  668. Might not be in the safe. It might be if

  669. one values a a relationship, they give

  670. time to it. If one values God, guess

  671. what? That value will appear in what

  672. they offer him. Solomon once

  673. demonstrated that kind of devotion.

  674. And we have to ask the question, do we

  675. give the Lord our best or we give him

  676. the scraps, the leftovers? Do we give

  677. him the best of our attention or our

  678. leftover thoughts? Do we give him the

  679. best time or the scraps of a busy week?

  680. Do we give him the best efforts in our

  681. worship or whatever energy we just

  682. mustered up today? Solomon once knew

  683. what it meant to honor God with

  684. excellence, friends. But this is the

  685. lesson. A person can have a season of

  686. deep devotion and still later drift if

  687. they do not continue to guard their

  688. heart.

  689. That is why we must be careful not to

  690. live on yesterday's faithfulness.

  691. It is wonderful to say there was a time

  692. when I was on fire for God. That sounds

  693. great. But the more important question

  694. is where is my heart at the present

  695. time? Where is it right now?

  696. because yesterday's obedience is not a

  697. substitute and never will be a

  698. substitute for today's faithfulness.

  699. And that is the great turning point in

  700. the account of Solomon's life.

  701. For all of his wisdom, for all of his

  702. blessings, for all of his past devotion,

  703. Solomon

  704. did not keep his heart where it needed

  705. to be. and the drift began.

  706. We find ourselves in First Kings chapter

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  707. 11

  708. and we start talking about Solomon who

  709. allowed his heart to drift.

  710. This is where the lesson becomes

  711. painfully sobering

  712. because first kings 11 tells us that

  713. Solomon loved many foreign women.

  714. Women from nations concerning which God

  715. had clearly spoken. God had warned

  716. Israel not to join themselves to those

  717. nations because they would turn their

  718. hearts after other gods. Do you believe

  719. there was wisdom in that? Yes. Yes. Yes.

  720. And yet Solomon ignored that warning.

  721. The text says in First Kings 11:4, "For

    1 Kings 11:4

  722. it was so when Solomon was old that his

  723. wives turned his heart after other gods,

  724. and his heart was not loyal to the Lord

  725. his God, as was the heart of his father

  726. David."

  727. That is a tragic sentence. It's tragic.

  728. The heart that once sought wisdom was

  729. now being turned. The life that once

  730. pointed others toward God was now being

  731. pulled toward compromise. And the king

  732. who once built the temple, as we just

  733. saw, was now connected to idolatry.

  734. That just sounds crazy, doesn't it?

  735. But here's the frightening thing. You

  736. know what the frightening thing is?

  737. That did not happen overnight.

  738. Didn't

  739. Solomon did not wake up one morning and

  740. instantly become an idoltor.

  741. This is what we call slow erosion,

  742. gradual surrender.

  743. This friends is a series of tolerated

  744. compromises.

  745. You know, and I I talk to young people a

  746. lot of times marriage and, you know,

  747. picking a spouse. My kids hear this one

  748. already and you're like, "Well, they're

  749. all look how young they are. Don't

  750. worry, we're starting early." All right.

  751. Talk about Jezebel last time, didn't we?

  752. We talked about talk about her a little

  753. bit. But also Ahab goes both ways,

  754. right?

  755. Why? Why do we share and and and make

  756. sure? Because we want to guard put the

  757. guard rails up. Get the boundaries in

  758. place. There's a reason for it.

  759. Because I tell you what,

  760. I've seen a lot of people fall away.

  761. You know, they told me said, "No, we

  762. won't. That's not going to happen. We

  763. won't fall away from the Lord."

  764. They did.

  765. They sure did.

  766. Because friends, that's how shorelines

  767. work.

  768. They're not usually reshaped by a single

  769. wave, are they?

  770. It's changed by the constant wearing

  771. away over time.

  772. In the same way, spiritual collapse

  773. often comes not by one dramatic moment,

  774. but by repeated compromises that slowly

  775. erode devotion.

  776. That's how drift works. That's why the

  777. scriptures make it so clear

  778. and so many warnings are given.

  779. lest you drift away.

  780. Hebrew writer speaks of that because all

  781. this begins when people stop taking

  782. God's warning seriously. Look, look what

  783. look what Solomon did. Solomon,

  784. it grows when they tolerate what God

  785. forbids. It deepens when infee when when

  786. affection for something else competes

  787. with affection for God. And before long,

  788. that heart is no longer whole. It's

  789. divided.

  790. And we often imagine that wisdom alone

  791. should protect a person. We would think

  792. that, but Solomon proves otherwise. A

  793. person can know exactly what the danger

  794. is. We can know it and still walk into

  795. it if desire overrules devotion. You

  796. know how to prove this point real easy?

  797. If you have a sign on this wall and it

  798. says wet paint,

  799. we're going to DO IT JUST TO check it.

  800. Tell me you ain't never done that. Oh

  801. yes you have.

  802. Why do we have to be warned at things? I

  803. mean it's

  804. we gravitate to that.

  805. Why do we have the warning? Keep your

  806. heart with all diligence for out of it

  807. springs the issues.

  808. Proverbs 4 verse 22.

    Proverbs 4:22

  809. The battle

  810. is always the battle for the heart. My

  811. friends, we can still attend while

  812. drifting,

  813. my friends. Preachers can still preach

  814. while drifting. Can a parent may still

  815. look respectable while drifting,

  816. but the drift always begins within. And

  817. friends, the most dangerous distance in

  818. life is not measured in miles from home.

  819. It's measured by inches

  820. of the heart from God.

  821. And because God is holy and because sin

  822. always bears fruit, Solomon's drift did

  823. not remain without consequence. Because

  824. this is painful.

  825. Solomon's choices brought consequences.

  826. God warned Solomon repeatedly, clearly,

  827. lovingly, but warnings ignored

  828. eventually became judgments experienced.

  829. First Kings 11:1, Solomon turned away.

    1 Kings 11:1

  830. God declared the kingdom would be torn.

  831. Y'all see it? Therefore, the Lord said

  832. to Solomon, "Because you have done this

  833. and have not kept my covenant and my

  834. statutes which I've commanded you, I

  835. will surely tear the king away from you

  836. and give it to your servant."

  837. And though this did not happen fully in

  838. Solomon's lifetime for David's sake, the

  839. damage had already been done and the

  840. seeds of division were planted. And

  841. after Solomon's death, the kingdom

  842. split.

  843. That's a tragic legacy. A man who had

  844. once known such unity and peace and

  845. blessing would leave behind fracture and

  846. to

  847. sin

  848. never remains neatly confined. It

  849. affects marriages, families, children,

  850. congregations, futures. One compromised

  851. life can leave a long shadow. Friends,

  852. Solomon's sin not only damaged Solomon,

  853. it affected an entire nation.

  854. And that's why we got to stop

  855. romanticizing compromise. Sin promises

  856. freedom, but you know what? It delivers

  857. bondage.

  858. It promises pleasure, but it leaves

  859. ruin. It whispers, "Nah, no one's going

  860. to get hurt." Yet it scatters wreckage

  861. everywhere.

  862. What's Galatians 6 tell us in verses

  863. seven and 8? Still holds true to this

  864. day. Do not be deceived. God is not

  865. mocked. For whatever a man sws that he

  866. will also reap. For he who sws to his

  867. flesh with the flesh reap corruption,

  868. but he who sws the spirit will the

  869. spirit reap everlasting life. Whatever a

  870. man sws that he will also reap. And we

  871. see this throughout the scriptures why

  872. there's so many warnings. Do not be

  873. deceived because the fact is the devil

  874. always hides the harvest while

  875. advertising the seed.

  876. Don't forget that

  877. the devil always hides the harvest while

  878. advertising the seed. And so when we

  879. stand at the end of Solomon's life, we

  880. are left with both admiration, but

  881. friends, we're also heartbreak.

  882. admiration for the wisdom God

  883. that he had at a time. Heartbreak for

  884. the faithfulness he failed to maintain.

  885. And that leaves us with a central

  886. lesson.

  887. When we step back and we look at the

  888. life of Solomon, we are forced to face a

  889. sobering truth.

  890. Wisdom wasn't enough.

  891. Blessing upon blessing not enough.

  892. Opportunity after opportunity not

  893. enough. A strong beginning

  894. was not enough.

  895. Why is that we ask? Because none of

  896. those things can replace continued

  897. faithfulness. None of those.

  898. Solomon knew better, but knowledge did

  899. not keep him. Solomon had been blessed,

  900. but blessing did not keep him. And

  901. Solomon had seen God work, but past

  902. experiences did not keep him. What he

  903. needed was a guarded heart, ongoing

  904. obedience, and unwavering devotion.

  905. And that is exactly what we need to.

  906. The tragedy of Solomon is not merely

  907. that he failed this. The tragedy is that

  908. a man who once stood so near to God

  909. allowed himself to become divided

  910. within. and soon the kingdom itself

  911. would became divided.

  912. He is a warning to every one of us that

  913. no amount of Bible knowledge can take

  914. the place of daily faithfulness. I said

  915. that this morning, friends, we can hold

  916. and we can know from front to the back

  917. of this Bible.

  918. But if we did not apply it, we don't do

  919. something with it and we don't guard our

  920. hearts and we keep that that good honest

  921. heart, that fruit that we're supposed to

  922. have for the Lord,

  923. it's not simply enough to hear the word

  924. of God and to know what the Bible says

  925. is I can know,

  926. but if I don't do what was that James 1

  927. says, therefore lay aside all filthiness

  928. and overflow of wickedness and receive

  929. with meekness the implanted word which

  930. is able to save your souls. But be doers

  931. of the word and not hearers only,

  932. deceiving yourselves. Verse 25, but he

  933. who looks into the perfect law of

  934. liberty and continues in it and is not a

  935. forgetful hearer, but a doer of the

  936. work, this one will be blessed in what

  937. he does. No reputation can substitute

  938. for real devotion, and no spiritual past

  939. can excuse present compromise.

  940. It's not enough to say I used to be

  941. stronger. It's not enough to say I know

  942. the truth. It's not enough to say I have

  943. done much for the Lord. The question

  944. again comes back to us where is our

  945. heart right now.

  946. So, we learn from Solomon. And again, I

  947. shared a lot of information and again,

  948. there's a whole lot more to Solomon's

  949. life than what I shared with you. And I

  950. know the time has certainly uh gone,

  951. but I appreciate your kind attention

  952. tonight. And I hope that has been

  953. encouraging and and exhorting to you,

  954. edifying

  955. that we learn these lessons. Our kids

  956. are learning these lessons. And we need

  957. to make sure to reinforce those lessons

  958. throughout their lives by the examples

  959. that we live. And also, what what do we

  960. need to do? We also need to keep them

  961. ourselves, right? Receive godly wisdom.

  962. Stay humble. Ask God for wisdom and

  963. discernment, blessings for his glory.

  964. Use those to glorify him. Give him our

  965. best. Guard our hearts with all

  966. diligence. Because when wisdom is not

  967. joined to faithfulness,

  968. even the wisest

  969. even the wisest can fall.

  970. As we get the song of imitation, it may

  971. be that someone hearing this and

  972. studying this lesson tonight with me

  973. sees themselves in Solomon more than

  974. they want to admit.

  975. We might know the truth, but our heart

  976. has begun to drift. Might still look

  977. faithful outwardly, but inwardly our

  978. devotion has cooled.

  979. Maybe compromise has crept in little by

  980. little. Maybe the warnings of God's word

  981. have become too familiar to stir you

  982. like they once did. But the good news is

  983. we're on this side of eternity right

  984. now. And you don't have to keep

  985. drifting. You can come back. You can

  986. repent. You can draw near to God again.

  987. You can ask the Lord for mercy,

  988. strength, and renewal. You can do that

  989. tonight. Don't wait another moment.

  990. And friends, if you have never obeyed

  991. the gospel message, tonight is the time

  992. to come to the one greater than Solomon.

  993. Come to Christ in faith, repentance,

  994. confession, and baptism for remission of

  995. sins. And if you are a child of God who

  996. has wondered, come home with a humble

  997. heart. Don't let knowledge without

  998. obedience define your life. Don't let

  999. bless blessing without faithfulness

1000. define your story. And don't let wisdom

1001. without surrender define your end.

  1002. Don't let it

  1003. great lessons,

1004. sad lessons from the life of Solomon

  1005. when wisdom wasn't enough. If you're

1006. subject to the invitation call, we bid

1007. you come while we stand, while we sing

1008. the song that's been selected.
