  1. You know, some of the greatest tragedies

  2. in scripture

  3. happen not because someone lacked

  4. opportunity,

  5. but because they misused it.

  6. We're talking about Riaboam tonight. um

  7. in our the kids classes since they

  8. started the new quarter as I mentioned

  9. they are starting to learn some Old

  10. Testament truths that uh we have several

  11. kings that they are going to be

  12. considering this quarter and and I've

  13. even had some of the adults of course

  14. who not before they even got to this

  15. quarter and started talking about

  16. uh these kings were ask asking hey will

  17. you do some uh some sermons on the Old

  18. Testament Kings. So, well, I sure can.

  19. Uh, so what we're doing, of course, is

  20. following along with what the kids are

  21. learning in their classes and

  22. reinforcing those lessons and in our

  23. hearts and our minds and for for the

  24. kids as well. And as I always uh like to

  25. say and like to again extend my

  26. appreciation for the the teachers, for

  27. our children and and the work that they

  28. do and all that they put into it. that

  29. it certainly means a lot uh to me uh

  30. when you take that time to sew that seed

  31. in water. It's it means a lot to me. Uh

  32. so tonight we last Sunday evening we

  33. were talking about Solomon and tonight

  34. Riaboam is this week's king that they're

  35. discussing and I thought well when

  36. you're looking for a title I think when

  37. pride divides is certainly fitting for

  38. the lesson that we find for Riaboam. Now

  39. you're going to find this recorded in

  40. first Kings. There's there's a lot of

  41. ground we're going to be covering for

  42. the time that we have, but First Kings

    1 Kings 12 chapter mention

  43. chapter 12 and First Kings chapter 14

    1 Kings 14 chapter mention

  44. and 2 Chronicles chapter 9 or majority

    2 Chronicles 9 chapter mention

  45. of what you'll find of what we're

  46. considering briefly this this uh

  47. evening.

  48. But Riaboam had everything going for

  49. him. Uh you might remember that he

  50. inherited the throne of Israel. Uh he

  51. inherited wealth beyond imagination. And

  52. he had inherited peace from his father.

  53. Who is his father? Solomon. Solomon. Uh

  54. he inherited influence, power, and

  55. respect.

  56. But what's interesting is within days.

  57. Within days, the kingdom split in two.

  58. There's some very interesting things

  59. that we're going to consider because the

  60. kingdom did not split because of war,

  61. not because of famine, not because of

  62. foreign invasion, but it split because

  63. of pride, because of poor counsel and a

  64. refusal to listen. all it was leading up

  65. to that moment uh when it split and and

  66. again what we even considered in last

  67. Sunday evening study with Solomon

  68. Riaboam echoes really this powerful

  69. truth that a strong beginning does not

  70. guarantee a faithful future that's fact

  71. one foolish decision

  72. can divide what took generations to

  73. build

  74. think about that because Riaboam

  75. inherited a great kingdom, but he also

  76. inherited

  77. well also a heavy burden. And if you

  78. look at First Kings chapter 14 and verse

    1 Kings 14 chapter mention

  79. 21, go to First Kings chapter 14. Look

    1 Kings 14 chapter mention

  80. at verse 21.

  81. And Riaboam the son of Solomon reigned

  82. in Judah. Riaboam was 41 years old when

  83. he became king. He reigned 17 years in

  84. Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had

  85. chosen out of all the tribes of Israel

  86. to put his name there. His mother's name

  87. was Nama and Ammonitas.

  88. Now,

  89. Riaboam as stated was a son of Solomon

  90. and as we know he was a very wise man.

  91. But something important when you look at

  92. how long you know again we see uh his

  93. age uh when he became king 41 years old

  94. says he reigned 17 years in Jerusalem.

  95. Again some specifics that we we might

  96. mark down here. Um but something else

  97. that is interesting is when you look at

  98. who his mother was.

  99. Now, when you think about the Ammonites,

  100. you would

  101. just automatically think about paganism.

  102. You would think about idolatry. Well,

  103. that's because that's where she came

  104. from is a pagan idol worshippping

  105. background.

  106. And this reminds us that Solomon's

  107. compromise had longterm consequences.

  108. Remember last Sunday evening, we was

  109. talking about how Solomon's marriages to

  110. idol worshshiping women. And you look

  111. back at first kings chapter 11 that this

    1 Kings 11 chapter mention

  112. warning was actually given. But King

  113. Solomon loved many foreign women as well

  114. as the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the

  115. Moabites, Ammonites,

  116. where Naomma came from,

  117. Sedonians, and Hittites from the nations

  118. of whom the Lord had said to the

  119. children of Israel, you shall not enter

  120. Mary with them, nor they with you.

  121. Surely they will, what does he say? Turn

  122. away your hearts after their gods. What

  123. does Solomon do? Solomon clung to these

  124. in love.

  125. Because what you see is the domino

  126. effect. I think that's what one of the

  127. classes was talking about. The domino

  128. effect because Solomon's marriages what

  129. end up happening led to divided loyalty,

  130. led to divided worship, led to a divided

  131. kingdom ultimately. And that's the

  132. interesting thing. Sin never stops with

  133. one generation.

  134. Riaboam inherited a wealthy kingdom, a

  135. powerful army, a magnificent temple, a

  136. strong capital, but also heavy taxation

  137. and a very dissatisfied people.

  138. Solomon's building projects, army,

  139. lifestyle, it required some hefty

  140. things. But the people were exhausted as

  141. we find they they wanted relief they

  142. said and they wanted a king who would

  143. listen. They wanted compassion and they

  144. hoped that Riaboam would be different.

  145. Well, Riaboam

  146. chooses pride over wisdom. I want you to

  147. go to chapter 12 of first kings and look

  148. at verses 1 through 4 with me.

  149. We find Riaboam. He travels to

  150. Sheckchham to meet the people. And

  151. Riabom when he went to Sheckchum for all

  152. Israel had gone to Sheckchham to make

  153. him king. So it happened when Jeroboam

  154. the son of Nebat heard it he was still

  155. in Egypt for he had fled from the

  156. presence of King Solomon and had been

  157. dwelling in Egypt that they sent and

  158. called him. Then Jeroboam and the whole

  159. assembly of Israel came and spoke to

  160. Riaboam saying your father made our yoke

  161. heavy. Now therefore lighten the

  162. burdensome service of your father and

  163. his heavy yoke which he put on us and we

  164. will serve you. Now one of the things I

  165. think we take away from this is this was

  166. not rebellion. This was really a request

  167. that was a request that was being made.

  168. The request was simply this. Lighten the

  169. burden and we will serve you. Okay. Well

  170. Riaboam did something wise at first.

  171. What did he do? Well he asked for

  172. counsel. Uh he asked the older men who

  173. serve Solomon. Look that look at verse

  174. seven. And they spoke to him saying, "If

  175. you will be a servant to these people

  176. today and serve them and answer them and

  177. speak good words to them, then they will

  178. be your servants forever." Well, that's

  179. some pretty wise advice that was given.

  180. And it's really simple what what's being

  181. stated here. It's bas basically saying,

  182. "Hey, you know, serve the people, be

  183. gentle, uh show compassion, and you're

  184. going to win their hearts." Sounds good,

  185. doesn't it? But then Riaboam, he's like,

  186. well, he's got this advice. Let's see

  187. what else we can do. How about make a

  188. fatal mistake? And that was when he

  189. rejected wise counsel. He goes on in

  190. verse 8 says just that, but he rejected

  191. the advice which the elders had given

  192. him and consulted the young men who had

  193. grown up with him who stood before him.

  194. Now, what kind of advice did they give

  195. him? Well, glad you asked. Verses 9-11.

  196. And he said to them, "What advice do you

  197. give? How should we answer this people

  198. who have spoken to me, saying, Lighten

  199. the yoke which your father put on us?"

  200. And the young men who had grown up with

  201. him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you

  202. should speak to this people who have

  203. spoken to you, saying, 'Your father made

  204. our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter

  205. on us. Thus you shall say to them, my

  206. little finger shall be thicker than my

  207. father's waist." And now, whereas my

  208. father put a heavy yoke on you, I will

  209. put I will add to your yoke. My father

  210. chastise you with whips, but I will

  211. chastise you with scorges.

  212. Well, we look at that. We're like, well,

  213. that doesn't sound like that's going to

  214. work out too well. Because instead of

  215. compassion,

  216. he chose intimidation.

  217. Instead of wisdom, he chose arrogance.

  218. Instead of listening, well, he chose

  219. pride.

  220. And the result was immediate because

  221. pride divided the kingdom

  222. because when the people heard his

  223. answer, what happened? Well, verse 16,

  224. first kings 12. Now when all Israel saw

  225. the king did not listen to them, the the

  226. people answered the king saying, "What

  227. share have we in David? We have no

  228. inheritance in the son of Jesse to your

  229. tents, O Israel. Now see to your own

  230. house, oh David. So Israel departed to

  231. their tents. These tribes walked away,

  232. 10 of them. The kingdom split. You got

  233. the northern kingdom. Now that's Israel.

  234. That that was uh Jeroboam. The southern

  235. kingdom of course with Judah and

  236. Benjamin Riaboam. and understanding that

  237. this division lasted for centuries

  238. all because one man refused to do what?

  239. Humble himself.

  240. Listen.

  241. There's some great wisdom

  242. behind listening

  243. and especially

  244. to whom we take advice.

  245. Listen to

  246. well. Proverbsap 11 and verse1 14 is one

  247. of those places we find this where there

  248. is no counsel the people fall

  249. but in the multitude of counselors there

  250. is safety.

  251. Proverbs 19 and verse 20 says listen to

  252. counsel and receive instruction that you

  253. may be wise in your latter days.

  254. And there's many passages that speak to

  255. this. And Riaboam teaches us that you

  256. can lose in one moment what took

  257. generations to build. It's a really sad

  258. situation that we find recorded for us

  259. in First Kings

  260. because Riaboam who started strong,

  261. he had the drift going. He drifted from

  262. God.

  263. In 2 Chronicles 11, if you go over there

  264. to Second Chronicles chapter 11, well,

    2 Chronicles 11 chapter mention

  265. after the split, Riaboam, he

  266. strengthened Judah, uh, he fortified

  267. cities, he built defenses, priests and

  268. Levites came south. And then in 2

    2 Chronicles 11:17

  269. Chronicles 11:17, it's what it says. So

  270. they strengthened the kingdom of Judah

  271. and made Reaborn, the son of Solomon,

  272. strong for three years

  273. because they walked in the way of David

  274. and Solomon for three years.

  275. And although that's

  276. wonder and that's great, but when you

  277. flip over to the Chronicles of the Kings

  278. in chapter 12 and verse one, look what

  279. happens.

  280. Now it came to pass when Riaboam had

  281. established the kingdom, had

  282. strengthened himself, that he forsook

  283. the law of the Lord and all Israel along

  284. with him.

  285. This is the tragic part.

  286. You have to pay attention to the words

  287. though. Look at the words. When Riabom

  288. had established the kingdom and had

  289. what? Strengthened himself.

  290. When things became secure,

  291. he forgot God.

  292. That's the way this happens still today.

  293. We could just kind of put our name there

  294. and show where comfort replaces

  295. commitment, success replaces submission,

  296. and strength replaces

  297. dependence.

  298. That's what happened.

  299. And

  300. God sent judgment.

  301. Read on in verses 2 through 4 because

  302. we're about to find how God humbled

  303. Riaboam

  304. because God allowed Shishak, king of

  305. Egypt, to invade. Look how this plays

  306. out. Look at 2 Chronicles 12:es 2-4.

  307. And it happened in the fifth year of

  308. King Rahab that Shishak, king of Egypt,

  309. came up against Jerusalem because they

  310. had transgressed against the Lord

  311. with,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen and

  312. people without number who came with him

  313. out of Egypt, Lubam and Ezekiel and the

  314. Ethiopians. He and he took the fortified

  315. cities of Judah and came to Jerusalem. I

  316. don't I I think it goes really without

  317. saying when you're reading that that the

  318. army was massive uh chariots, horsemen,

  319. countless soldiers

  320. and Riaboam, what's his reaction to

  321. this? What's his response if you will?

  322. Well, verses five and six. And Shmaya

  323. the prophet came to Raom and the leaders

  324. of Judah who were gathered together in

  325. Jerusalem because of Shishak and said to

  326. them, "Thus says the Lord, you have

  327. forsaken me and therefore I also have

  328. left you in the hand of Shishak." So the

  329. leaders of Israel and the king humbled

  330. themselves and they said, "The Lord is

  331. righteous."

  332. Now, we note that God shows mercy in the

  333. next verses.

  334. But although God showed mercy, there's

  335. consequences that still remain. When the

  336. Lord saw that they humbled themselves,

  337. verse 7, the word of the Lord came to

  338. Shemus, saying, "They have humbled

  339. themselves. Therefore, I will not

  340. destroy them, but I will grant them some

  341. deliverance. My wrath shall not be

  342. poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of

  343. Shishak. Nevertheless, they will be his

  344. servants, that they may distinguish my

  345. service from the service of the kingdoms

  346. of the nations.

  347. Shishak, the king of Egypt, came up

  348. against Jerusalem and took away the

  349. treasures of the house of the Lord and

  350. the treasures of the king's house. He

  351. took everything. He also carried away

  352. the gold shields which Solomon had made.

  353. Now the gold shells of Solomon were

  354. gone. Riabal actually replaces them with

  355. bronze

  356. and

  357. you see a decline here, don't you?

  358. And why all of this?

  359. Why? Why did all this happen?

  360. It happened when pride replaced

  361. obedience.

  362. So there are some lessons that we take

  363. from Riab, things that the kids are

  364. learning themselves,

  365. things that we need to also take stock

  366. of in our lives.

  367. That number one, we need to listen to

  368. godly wisdom.

  369. Listen to godly wisdom.

  370. Proverbs 16:31 says, "The silverhaired

    Proverbs 16:31

  371. head is a crown of glory

  372. if it is found in the way of

  373. righteousness."

  374. Now, you know, sometimes say just

  375. because I got gray hair don't mean I'm

  376. wiser than somebody else. Okay? All

  377. right.

  378. That's why I believe you see if it is

  379. found what in the way of righteousness.

  380. You know, a lot of times, of course, I

  381. think about this when I was a kid,

  382. uh, when you think about listening to

  383. the wisdom of those that are older than

  384. us, a lot of times, you know, I mean,

  385. you you can think about when you were

  386. growing up and your parents told you

  387. don't do that,

  388. uh, because of whatever might be some

  389. consequences behind that. And we're

  390. like, what do they know, right? What

  391. they don't have a clue, you know?

  392. they're so outdated. I don't know if

  393. that's the word you'd use, you know, and

  394. so we would scoff at some of those

  395. things that they would tell us. And I've

  396. used this example time and time again

  397. that, you know, my parents, you know,

  398. are a lot wiser as I've gotten older.

  399. They actually knew what they were

  400. talking about. That's kind of strange,

  401. you know.

  402. And so we go through that in in our

  403. lives that sometimes, you know, as

  404. younger people, as we're growing up, we

  405. look at those at older and we say, well,

  406. you know, they're outdated or but think

  407. about this. Seasoned, we not use that

  408. word, too. Seasoned or older Christians

  409. are not outdated. They are experienced

  410. if it is found in the way of what?

  411. Righteousness.

  412. The way of righteousness. And you think

  413. about that, you know, like I I've told

  414. the kids a lot of times, don't do that.

  415. And I can give them a reason why

  416. because, well, I have experienced

  417. something of that nature. I tell them a

  418. lot of times I've been there and I have

  419. done that. Uh, and it was a foolish

  420. choice on my part to do it. And you

  421. know, as we all do from time to time, we

  422. have to learn what? The hard way. That's

  423. difficult, isn't it? Well, when you look

  424. at this, when when you're considering

  425. that wise older council that that

  426. Riaboam was receiving,

  427. you know, they had walked through

  428. storms.

  429. you know make that connection even now

  430. made mistakes

  431. learned some lessons

  432. still today that's why we look at that

  433. and if it is found in the way of

  434. righteousness friends we need to listen

  435. we need to heed to that listening to

  436. wisdom protects us and there is a whole

  437. lot of information we find obviously in

  438. in the proverbs that that gives us that

  439. very thought. Well, with that, the

  440. second thing I think we also take away

  441. from this is pride destroys unity. You

  442. look at 1 Peter chapter 5 and verse 5.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  443. It says, "Likewise, you younger people,

  444. submit yourselves to your elders. Yes,

  445. all of you be submissive to one another

  446. and be clothed with humility, for God

  447. resists the proud, but gives grace to

  448. the humble." Think about it. Riaboam did

  449. not lose the kingdom because of enemies.

  450. That's not why he lost the kingdom. Some

  451. people say, "Well, we lost king because

  452. of Shack or what." No, we see the domino

  453. effect already taking place because of

  454. pride. That's where the issue was at.

  455. Still the same thing. You know, we go

  456. back, we consider several Proverbs as

  457. well. We we know one right off

  458. right from the top of our head. A lot of

  459. times we we quote it, you know, pride

  460. cometh before destruction. Pride comes

  461. before the fall. We we hear that

  462. and there's so much truth to it. That's

  463. why so much is recorded about the danger

  464. of being prideful, being arrogant,

  465. because even today, what does pride do?

  466. Pride divides

  467. churches. Pride divides families. Pride

  468. divides friendship. Pride divides

  469. congregation. But humility though

  470. builds unity.

  471. Scriptures make that clear.

  472. Absolutely makes that clear.

  473. It was a heart problem of Riaboam.

  474. And then we also see

  475. of what Riabor teaches us is a good

  476. start

  477. is simply not enough.

  478. I will concede the fact as we find from

  479. the scriptures reoam started strong. He

  480. did but

  481. he started to drift

  482. again. 2 Chronicles 12:1 There it was.

    2 Chronicles 12:1

  483. It was already on the screen. Now it

  484. came to pass when Ribbom had established

  485. the kingdom, had strengthened himself

  486. that he forsook the law of the Lord and

  487. all Israel along with him.

  488. Friends, faithfulness is not measured by

  489. how you begin.

  490. It is it is measured by how you finish.

  491. Just like last week, what did we see

  492. with Solomon? Same exact Solomon

  493. drifted. He was very wise. But what did

  494. we say in last week's sermon? Wisdom

  495. wasn't enough.

  496. Riabo,

  497. same issues drifted.

  498. It's interesting that we have these

  499. given to us

  500. and the Bible,

  501. you know,

  502. doesn't hide these things from us.

  503. The Bible shows us truly what the

  504. character is.

  505. You know, we we automatically would love

  506. to think that someone who started

  507. strong, they finished strong.

  508. But that's the point for us even today

  509. is that we can be in danger of the same

  510. issue

  511. because again Riabom had everything. He

  512. had a throne, a kingdom, a legacy. He

  513. had opportunity,

  514. but he lost most of it because he just

  515. wouldn't listen.

  516. At least the ones he listened to wasn't

  517. the right ones to listen to.

  518. And it's sad that one decision divided a

  519. nation.

  520. So this evening, the question is simple.

  521. Will we listen to true wisdom?

  522. Will we humble ourselves?

  523. Will we follow God's counsel?

  524. Because pride to this day still divides,

  525. but humility still saves.

  526. I'm asking tonight if pride has crept

  527. into your life.

  528. Have you resisted counsel,

  529. wise counsel?

  530. Have you drifted from God?

  531. Now I did say there was some good news

  532. that we saw in this lesson is that

  533. Riabom did humble himself and God showed

  534. mercy.

  535. Now there were still some consequences

  536. that Riabom faced.

  537. And something else I believe we take

  538. away from it is why we have to guard our

  539. hearts, why we have to be so careful is

  540. because look at that one decision.

  541. Look how many it affected.

  542. Why do we need to make sure we have the

  543. guard rails set up in our lives? Why do

  544. we teach our children and so forth about

  545. having these guardrails? Because the

  546. world is pulling and the world is trying

  547. to get us off the the narrow path. It's

  548. trying to take us away from what we

  549. should be doing, giving us some very

  550. horrible advice. And a lot of times what

  551. we can do is it can cause that ripple

  552. effect that can affect everything else

  553. around again families,

  554. communities,

  555. nations, all of these things. We see

  556. this from the scriptures.

  557. We have to be ever so careful.

  558. James 4:es 7-10. I will end with this.

  559. Says, "Therefore submit to God. Resist

  560. the devil and he will flee from you.

  561. Draw near to God and he will draw near

  562. to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners,

  563. and purify your hearts, you double-

  564. minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let

  565. your laughter be turned to mourning and

  566. your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in

  567. the sight of the Lord, and he will lift

  568. you up.

  569. Riaboam stands a very powerful lesson

  570. and there will be more of those that we

  571. will see from the kingdom. We think

  572. about Israel. We think about Judah.

  573. Some very devastating things. Now, there

  574. are some good. There are some good ones.

  575. We'll hit on those from time to time,

  576. but there was a lot of bad. There was a

  577. lot of bad.

  578. But the good news for us is that we

  579. don't have to allow pride to divide us.

  580. We can take what we have learned from

  581. Riaboam and we can make the application

  582. to our lives and say I will not allow

  583. pride to infiltrate my heart and my

  584. mind. I will seek out that wise wisdom

  585. and I will cling to it. I will seek out

  586. the righteousness of God.

  587. We need to make our minds set on just

  588. that. how important it is when we think

  589. about our children that they see us

  590. making wise choices and that we are

  591. giving wise instruction that is based

  592. based where where does it come from? It

  593. comes from God's word and they need to

  594. see us leaning upon that so they know

  595. again the why.

  596. Why do we do what we do?

  597. Why do we make this choice over that

  598. one?

  599. because God's wisdom, that's where it's

  600. at. So friends, if you need to return to

  601. God, if you need prayers, if you need to

  602. obey the gospel, call this evening. Have

  603. you heard the word, you believe that

  604. Jesus Christ is the son of living God,

  605. repent of your sins, confess him and be

  606. baptized, immersed, buried with him and

  607. baptized to rise and walk in newness of

  608. life as Romans 6 3 and 4 says. And

  609. again, when we look at our hearts, can

  610. we say that we are truly humbling

  611. ourselves before God? We ask this

  612. question in this song tonight. Is thy

  613. heart right with God? Serve him with a

  614. perfect heart for the Lord searches all

  615. hearts. 1 Chronicles 28 and verse 9. And

  616. your his heart is being searched right

  617. now by God himself.

  618. Search it as well. If there's something

  619. a miss, make that right with God

  620. tonight. Won't you come as we stand and

  621. sing the song that's been selected?
