  1. This evening in our sermon and song

  2. service, the theme I have chosen is

  3. entitled Under the Sun. So, in your

  4. Bibles, I would encourage you to turn to

  5. Ecclesiastes chapter 1. We're going to

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  6. have uh several readings from

  7. Ecclesiastes chapter 1. And um friends,

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  8. I would submit to you in this sermon and

  9. song we're we're doing tonight that

  10. there are uh some portions of of

  11. scripture that comfort us immediately.

  12. Uh and then there are others that

  13. confront us first before

  14. they comfort us. And Ecclesiastes

  15. is one of those books. uh it does not

  16. actually begin by lifting us. It

  17. actually begins by stripping us. Solomon

  18. does not start by telling us how good

  19. life feels.

  20. He starts by telling us

  21. how empty life can be. So let's start

  22. with our first scripture reading.

  23. Brother Daniel Cecil will lead us in

  24. Ecclesiastes chapter 1 and verses 1- 3.

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  25. >> Vanity of vanity, says the teacher.

  26. Vanity of vanities, all is vanity. What

  27. do people gain from all the toil at

  28. which they toil under the sun?

  29. So what we're going to sing is life like

  30. vapor in the morning. Like vapor in the

  31. morning. This is a new song and it is to

  32. the tune of abide with me. You must have

  33. a handout though to sing this song. So,

  34. if you did not get one, it was on the

  35. stand, but there are still several back

  36. there. You need one or share with

  37. someone.

  38. We're going to sing first, fourth, and

  39. fifth verses of this song like vapor in

  40. the morning.

  41. The

  42. morning

  43. by thy passing

  44. Sh.

  45. The son

  46. is

  47. teach us

  48. to

  49. number

  50. our days.

  51. Guide our hearts

  52. in my

  53. thy

  54. breath.

  55. trusting

  56. me through life and

  57. care.

  58. God still

  59. with our hearts and

  60. then

  61. all

  62. faith and rightous

  63. for

  64. the

  65. life.

  66. The sun is free.

  67. In

  68. Christ we find

  69. eternal

  70. heaven.

  71. Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.

  72. That word vanity paints the picture of a

  73. vapor.

  74. Something you can see for a moment in

  75. the cold air and then it disappears.

  76. Now, it looks real,

  77. but it doesn't last. And Solomon repeats

  78. it for emphasis. Vanity of vanities. And

  79. that really is the highest degree of

  80. emptiness.

  81. Why would God include a book like this

  82. in scripture might be the question that

  83. we might have?

  84. Well, because

  85. before a man will ever

  86. seek what is eternal, he must first

  87. realize that what is temporary will

  88. never satisfy.

  89. Ecclesiastes

  90. is a way in which God is saying, "If you

  91. build your life on the wrong foundation,

  92. I will let you feel how empty it is." So

  93. then you will seek what is right.

  94. So what we noted in the first three

  95. verses is really the empty return of

  96. life under the sun. Solomon asked a

  97. question that echoes actually across

  98. every generation. That is what prophet

  99. has a man.

  100. This is not a question about activity.

  101. It's a it's a question about outcome.

  102. Not what are you doing, but what are you

  103. gaining that last? And he anchors the

  104. question with that key phrase under the

  105. sun. And that phrase appears repeatedly

  106. in Ecclesiastes and describes life lived

  107. from an earthly

  108. perspective without uh reference to God,

  109. eternity or spiritual purpose. And

  110. Solomon's conclusion is clear. And what

  111. is that conclusion? There is no lasting

  112. profit. You know, a a man can climb the

  113. ladder, can build a business, can

  114. accumulate the wealth, can earn the

  115. respect, can achieve the goals, and the

  116. list could go on. And you know what?

  117. They can still end up empty

  118. because everything under the sun

  119. is temporary.

  120. And that's what Jesus even echoed that

  121. same truth in Matthew 16 verse 26. For

    Matthew 16:26

  122. what profit is it to a man if he gains

  123. the whole world and loses his own soul?

  124. Or what will a man give in exchange for

  125. his soul?

  126. Solomon asked the question and Jesus

  127. gave the answer.

  128. You think about a a man who fills

  129. buckets with water at the edge of the

  130. ocean and pouring them uh into a hole in

  131. the sand trying to fill it. That just

  132. sounds kind of silly, doesn't it?

  133. because he works tirelessly bucket after

  134. bucket after bucket effort after effort

  135. after effort but the water keeps

  136. draining out

  137. because the foundation can't hold it.

  138. That's why

  139. and that's what happens as Solomon tells

  140. us when we try to build a meaningful

  141. life without God that no matter how much

  142. we pour into it

  143. achievement and pleasure recognition it

  144. never holds

  145. Luke 12 and verse 15 and he said to them

  146. take heed and beware of covetousness for

  147. one's life does not consist in the

  148. abundance of the things he possesses

  149. or James 4 and verse14 as we just sang

  150. about one of the places in that verse is

  151. whereas you do not know what will happen

  152. tomorrow for what is your life it is

  153. even a v vapor that appears for a little

  154. time and then vanishes away so what

  155. we're asking and we must ask is am I

  156. living for what is temporary or eternal

  157. is my identity rooted in Christ or in

  158. accomplishments am I measuring my life

  159. by what heaven measures.

  160. Because the warning is clear from

  161. Solomon, a person may spend years

  162. striving and building and gaining and

  163. pursuing success. Yet, if all of it is

  164. lived only under the sun, it will one

  165. day be found empty.

  166. One may accumulate wealth and still be

  167. poor in spirit. One may gain applause

  168. and still lose peace.

  169. One may fill the schedule and yet starve

  170. the soul.

  171. The tragedy is not merely climbing.

  172. It's climbing in the wrong direction.

  173. Because a man can spend his whole life

  174. climbing and still end up leaning his

  175. ladder against the wrong wall.

  176. That is why

  177. the answer to the emptiness of life

  178. under the sun is set is to set our

  179. sights above the sun.

  180. We must seek higher ground. We must lift

  181. our eyes from what is temporary to what

  182. is eternal, from what is fading to what

  183. is lasting,

  184. from what man builds to what God gives.

  185. And with that thought in mind, we're

  186. going to sing together

  187. number 109, verses 1 and 4. Brother Kyle

  188. Copelan will lead us in this song. Then

  189. we'll have our next scripture reading by

  190. brother Keith Massie from Ecclesiastes

  191. 1:es 4-1 11 followed by the song As the

  192. Dear number 589 of Brother Mike Burton.

  193. I'm pressing on the upward

  194. new

  195. onward.

  196. Lord me on higher

  197. ground.

  198. Lord lift me up and let me stand

  199. my faith on heaven.

  200. that I have found. Lord, plant me on

  201. higher

  202. ground.

  203. I want to live above the world.

  204. The Satan stars

  205. and me are

  206. for

  207. the joyful sound. The song of saints on

  208. higher

  209. ground.

  210. Lord, lift me up and let me stand

  211. by heaven.

  212. a higher place

  213. than I have found. Lord

  214. ground.

  215. I want to scale

  216. most high

  217. and catch up

  218. on glory.

  219. But still I'll pray, still have my

  220. Lord lead me onto higher

  221. ground.

  222. Lord, lift me up and let me stand

  223. by.

  224. Lord, mighty on.

  225. I've always thought in reading

  226. Ecclesiastes, it was written so man

  227. could look and read at it, read the

  228. verses and be humble

  229. of the things that we cannot know. We

  230. live in a time of of information age and

  231. and we have we've create created

  232. artificial intelligence and there's so

  233. many people that look to that and that

  234. has to be the way it is. But when we go

  235. through these verses and we read, we

  236. should ask ourself and we should realize

  237. that all knowledge comes from God. Man

  238. does not create knowledge. Beginning in

  239. verse four, one generation passes away

  240. and another generation comes, but the

  241. earth abides forever. The sun also rises

  242. and the sun goes down and hastens to the

  243. place where it arose. The wind goes

  244. toward the south and turns around to the

  245. north. The wind whirls about continually

  246. and comes again on its circuit. All

  247. rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is

  248. not full to the place from which the

  249. river comes.

  250. There they return again. All things are

  251. full of labor. Man cannot express it.

  252. The eye is not satisfied with seeing,

  253. nor the ear filled with hearing. That

  254. which has been is what will be. That

  255. which is done is what will be done. And

  256. there is nothing new under the sun. Is

  257. there anything of which it may be said?

  258. See, this is new.

  259. It has already been in ancient times

  260. before us. There is no remembrance of

  261. the former things,

  262. nor

  263. will there be any remembrance of things

  264. that are to come by those who will come

  265. after you.

  266. As the dear

  267. soul

  268. you

  269. are my heart

  270. desire

  271. and I

  272. toship

  273. you.

  274. You are

  275. my strength, my shield.

  276. To you

  277. may sp

  278. You

  279. are my heart

  280. and I want

  281. to worship

  282. you.

  283. I want you more than gold

  284. or silver. Only you can.

  285. You

  286. are the real

  287. joy

  288. and the apple

  289. of

  290. my heart.

  291. You

  292. are my strength, my shield.

  293. to you alone.

  294. May my spirit

  295. you

  296. are my heart

  297. desire

  298. and my

  299. toship

  300. you.

  301. If life under the sun offers no lasting

  302. return,

  303. Solomon then shows us something else.

  304. Life under the sun also feels like a

  305. neverending cycle,

  306. the endless cycles of a broken world.

  307. You know, in that passage that brother

  308. Keith was reading there,

  309. Solomon turns his attention really to

  310. creation itself and what he sees is

  311. repetition. You go down through those

  312. verses, verse four, down through verse

  313. 7, the generations, they do what? They

  314. come and go. Uh the sun, what does it

  315. do? It rises and sets. The wind circles

  316. about and rivers flow endlessly.

  317. And what's interesting is what you

  318. notice in verses 4-7

  319. is everything is moving

  320. but nothing is ever arriving. Y'all

  321. notice that

  322. everything's active

  323. but nothing is fulfilled.

  324. Now this is not what we'd say uh just a

  325. scientific observation.

  326. This is a spiritual one. Solomon is

  327. saying life without God, you know, it

  328. feels like motion without meaning.

  329. That's exactly what it is. Life without

  330. God feels like motion without meaning.

  331. What does verse eight say? The eye is

  332. not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear

  333. filled with hearing. And friends, that's

  334. the human condition.

  335. You see something, what do you naturally

  336. do after that? You see something, you

  337. want it. Well, what's the next thing you

  338. do? Well, you get it. And how long does

  339. it satisfy

  340. briefly

  341. and then what do you want next? Well,

  342. you want something else. That's the

  343. cycle.

  344. It's like, you know, we use our cell

  345. phones for example. It's like it's like

  346. scrolling endlessly on a phone. Uh you

  347. keep looking uh you keep searching, you

  348. keep consuming, but you never feel

  349. satisfied. There's always something else

  350. to see. There's always something else to

  351. to chase. And really that's kind of the

  352. modern version of Ecclesiastes 1 if you

  353. think about it. But look what even from

  354. the very beginning Adam and Eve.

  355. It's interesting as you see this cycle

  356. that began in this broken world that sin

  357. certainly brought in. Our next scripture

  358. reading we want to consider is from

  359. first John chapter 2 and verses 15-1 17.

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  360. Brother Keith Wines will lead that

  361. passage there for us. 1 John 2:15-17.

    1 John 2:15–17

  362. Do not love the world, nor the things in

  363. the world. If anyone loves the world,

  364. the love of the father is not in him.

  365. For all that is in the world, the lust

  366. of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes,

  367. and the boastful pride of life is not

  368. from the father, but is from the world.

  369. The world is passing away, and also its

  370. lust. But the one who does the will of

  371. the go will of God continues to live

  372. forever.

  373. >> So Solomon has has shown us the weary

  374. repetition of life in a fallen world,

  375. hasn't he? And that's what we were just

  376. reading there from 1 John chapter 2.

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  377. What's it say? That lust of lies, right?

  378. What is all this? What is all those

  379. things? Lust of the flesh and the pride

  380. of life. Those are all fading. They're

  381. passing away.

  382. The sun rises and sets. The wind circles

  383. back again. The rivers run continually.

  384. Yet nothing under the sun is ever truly

  385. made complete. The cycle continues, but

  386. the heart of man remains restless. Think

  387. about this world of motion that we live

  388. in today. Yet so many are going nowhere.

  389. We're surrounded by activity, yet

  390. starving for meaning.

  391. Many today, I'll tell you, are

  392. exhausted.

  393. Not because they lack opportunity, but

  394. because they are chasing things that

  395. never satisfy.

  396. one thing to another, one purchase, one

  397. distraction, hoping that the next thing

  398. will finally bring peace. But the soul

  399. cannot be nourished for by what that is,

  400. what is temporary. It cannot be anchored

  401. by what's passing away. It doesn't work

  402. that way. That's what the scriptures

  403. make abundantly clear that a busy life,

  404. friends, can still be an empty life if

  405. it's disconnected from God.

  406. Because a full calendar does not

  407. guarantee a full heart.

  408. Endless motion does not equal true

  409. progress. One may be constantly occupied

  410. and yet spiritually a drift at the same

  411. time.

  412. The answer is not merely to do more,

  413. but to hold fast to what is eternal,

  414. steady, and sure.

  415. In a changing world where everything

  416. beneath under the sun is shining or is

  417. shifting and uncertain, there is one

  418. whose hand never fails, whose promises

  419. never fade

  420. and whose truth never changes. We're

  421. going to turn our hearts to that

  422. wonderful reality as we sing 463. Hold

  423. to God's unchanging hand. Brother Kyle

  424. Hill will lead us in that song.

  425. Following that, that's all verses of

  426. that song. Brother Keith Massie will

  427. lead us in our next scripture of

  428. Ecclesiastes 1:12-18.

    Ecclesiastes 1:12–18

  429. And then following that scripture

  430. reading, Psalm 119, only in thee,

  431. brother Kyle Hill will lead us in that

  432. song.

  433. transition

  434. can stand

  435. to God's unchanging hand

  436. to God's unchanging ing

  437. to God's unchanging hands

  438. eternal

  439. to God's unchanging hand.

  440. Trust in him who will not be

  441. my earthly friends for

  442. still

  443. God's unchanging hand.

  444. Oh

  445. to God's unchanging hand.

  446. Build your hopes on things eternal

  447. to God's unchanging hand.

  448. When your journey is completed

  449. to God, you have been true

  450. and bright in glory.

  451. been raptured. So will you

  452. to God's unchanging hand

  453. to God's unchanging hands

  454. on things

  455. to God's unchanging hand.

  456. I the preacher was king over Israel in

  457. Jerusalem. And I set my heart to seek

  458. and search out by wisdom concerning all

  459. that is done under heaven. This

  460. burdensome task God has given to the

  461. sons of man by which they may be

  462. exercised. I have seen all the works

  463. that are done under the sun, and indeed

  464. all is vanity and grasping for the wind.

  465. What is crooked cannot be straight, and

  466. what is lacking cannot be numbered. I

  467. communed with my heart, saying, "Look, I

  468. have attained greatness. I have gained

  469. more wisdom than all who were before me

  470. in Jerusalem. My heart has understood

  471. great wisdom and knowledge. I set my

  472. heart to know wisdom and to know madness

  473. and folly. I perceive that this also is

  474. grasping for the wind. For in much

  475. wisdom is much grief, and he who

  476. increases knowledge increases sorrow.

  477. for 11 only in

  478. only the

  479. dwelling

  480. mine

  481. can take

  482. from

  483. of earth

  484. seemingly sweet

  485. to me

  486. and

  487. my

  488. complete

  489. holy dear Lord

  490. Holy

  491. Like a be

  492. in the night,

  493. guiding my pill

  494. over my

  495. trous

  496. And with temp

  497. I am

  498. there is a sweet

  499. rest

  500. only dear Lord

  501. in

  502. and me

  503. slain.

  504. My

  505. name

  506. trusting my

  507. every

  508. heart will be

  509. till In the land where

  510. we lost

  511. heaven.

  512. So if activity

  513. that we talked about briefly doesn't

  514. satisfy, cycles don't satisfy, perhaps

  515. wisdom will. Well, as we find from

  516. Ecclesiastic writer, the limits, there

  517. are certainly limits of human wisdom.

  518. Solomon said, "And I set my heart to

  519. know,

  520. seek, to search out wisdom."

  521. You know, I was thinking about if anyone

  522. could figure out life intellectually,

  523. certainly it would be Solomon.

  524. And yet, what does he conclude? He says,

  525. "This also is grasping for the wind."

  526. You know, wisdom reveals reality,

  527. but wisdom cannot repair it.

  528. The more Solomon understood life,

  529. there is more things that he saw. I

  530. could make a brief list.

  531. The more

  532. Solomon understood life, the more he saw

  533. injustice, the more he saw brokenness,

  534. the more he saw limitations, the more he

  535. saw death.

  536. And it grieved him. I know this because

  537. verse 18 says it. For in much wisdom is

  538. much grief.

  539. I was thinking about

  540. in the perspective of

  541. going into a dirty room

  542. and you turn on a bright light.

  543. Now, the light does doesn't create

  544. the mess.

  545. It simply reveals it.

  546. And the way I think of it, the clearer

  547. you see it, the more overwhelming it

  548. feels.

  549. As we said, we just turn the light back

  550. off.

  551. But

  552. that is what wisdom does without God.

  553. You know, Paul spoke about this in 1

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  554. Corinthians chapter 1. He talked about

  555. the world through wisdom did not know

  556. God. Verse 20 and 21 he speaks of that.

  557. And then in Colossians 2 and verse three

  558. he says in Christ though are hidden all

  559. the treasures of wisdom.

  560. See, Solomon is reminding us that, you

  561. know, there's there's value in wisdom,

  562. but also understanding that it has its

  563. limits because he sought understanding,

  564. he sought learning, he sought uh

  565. knowledge, and yet found that human

  566. wisdom alone could not heal the

  567. brokenness of the human condition. It

  568. could expose problems. It could expose

  569. issues,

  570. but not erase them.

  571. could even solve it.

  572. It could diagnose sorrow

  573. but couldn't deliver joy.

  574. It could increase awareness yet still

  575. leave the heart unsatisfied.

  576. You know, our world, our society

  577. believes education and progress will

  578. solve everything.

  579. friends, look back over the years.

  580. There's nothing new under the sun. And

  581. we have a lot of things. We think about,

  582. you know, the the generations that are

  583. coming up and all these different

  584. explorations and all these things

  585. and look at the brokenness that's still

  586. around. We we're still dealing with it

  587. because knowledge alone cannot fix sin.

  588. We have more information than any

  589. generation before us.

  590. Yet confusion remains.

  591. We have advanced in technology and

  592. medicine and communication. Yet what do

  593. we still wrestle with?

  594. Pride, greed, lust, hatred, and despair.

  595. That's what we're dealing with still.

  596. Because the greatest problems of man are

  597. not merely intellectual. They're

  598. spiritual

  599. friends. The mind can discover truth,

  600. but only God can deliver meaning.

  601. Because yes, the intellect may they may

  602. take us far.

  603. It certainly may,

  604. but it can't carry us home.

  605. Reason can point to the need, but only

  606. grace can actually meet it. Human wisdom

  607. may tell us what is wrong, but divine

  608. wisdom reveals what is right and what is

  609. good and how to be made whole.

  610. That is why our confidence must rest not

  611. merely in what we know

  612. but in whom we know.

  613. Our faith is not anchored in theories or

  614. trends or the changing opinions of men

  615. because that's changed a lot, hasn't it?

  616. But our faith is to be anchored in the

  617. living Christ who saves, sustains, and

  618. secures his people.

  619. And with that assurance in our hearts,

  620. we're going to sing the next song before

  621. our concluding thoughts. That's number

  622. 350.

  623. I know whom I have believed.

  624. We're going to sing all verses of this

  625. song. Brother Kyle Copelan will lead us.

  626. Number 350.

  627. I know not by God's wonderous

  628. grace to me he had made known

  629. for

  630. unworthy he Christ in love redeemed

  631. me before his own.

  632. But I know who

  633. I have

  634. and

  635. that he is able

  636. to keep that

  637. which I committed

  638. unto him

  639. against that day.

  640. I know not what

  641. good or ill may

  642. reserve for me.

  643. of we

  644. are golden

  645. days before

  646. his face I see.

  647. But I know

  648. I have believed

  649. and amuained

  650. that he is able

  651. to keep that

  652. which I committed

  653. unto him

  654. against that day.

  655. I know not when my Lord may come and I

  656. norm

  657. Nor

  658. meet

  659. him in the air.

  660. But I know

  661. I have believed

  662. and amu

  663. that he is able

  664. to keep that

  665. which I committed

  666. unto him

  667. again.

  668. So Solomon has tested work, life itself,

  669. and wisdom,

  670. and all fall short without God.

  671. Ecclesiastes chapter 1

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  672. is not written to leave us empty.

  673. It's written to leave to lead us to

  674. fullness.

  675. It tears down false hope

  676. so that we will seek true hope

  677. because it shows us as the lesson was

  678. entitled that life under the sun is

  679. incomplete

  680. because it was never meant to stand

  681. alone.

  682. We are created for something higher

  683. from under the sun

  684. to above the sun.

  685. I think a well

  686. way to illustrate this good way to

  687. illustrate this is you ever had a

  688. compass

  689. and you put it near a strong magnetic

  690. field. What happens? That thing will

  691. spin and it will spin and it will spin.

  692. And with that it loses direction because

  693. it it cannot settle.

  694. But when removed from that interference

  695. of that magnetic field, what does it do?

  696. It aligns properly.

  697. And what I submit to you tonight is

  698. that's actually the human heart.

  699. Because when we are surrounded, when

  700. surrounded by the pull of the world, you

  701. know what it does? It spins.

  702. That's all it does. It spins.

  703. It never settles and it never satisfies.

  704. Isn't that what Solomon was saying in

  705. Ecclesiastes chapter 1?

    Ecclesiastes 1 chapter mention

  706. But when aligned with God, you know

  707. what? It finds direction and peace.

  708. Friends, you will never find fullness in

  709. a life that leave that leaves God out.

  710. Because God is the designer. He is the

  711. creator. He's the one who brings

  712. fullness to our hearts.

  713. Jesus Christ came to give what Solomon

  714. could not find under the sun.

  715. You know what that is?

  716. Forgiveness of sins,

  717. purpose for living,

  718. peace in the soul, and hope beyond the

  719. grave.

  720. Solomon could not find that under the

  721. sun.

  722. But Jesus Christ came to give it. The

  723. fullness of the scriptures has shown it

  724. to us. If you believe, repent, confess,

  725. and be baptized for the remission of

  726. your sins, the Lord will give you what

  727. this world never can.

  728. Peace that surpasses all understanding

  729. is able to guard your hearts and minds

  730. through Christ. as we come out of that

  731. watery grave of baptism to rise and walk

  732. in newness of life and relationship with

  733. God through Jesus Christ our Savior.

  734. If you haven't done that, I would plead

  735. with you to do as we're about to sing in

  736. this song of invitation.

  737. Say, I am resolved no longer to linger.

  738. no longer to linger charmed by the

  739. world's delight.

  740. We need to face after those things that

  741. are noble, things that are higher, and

  742. that's above the sun.

  743. If you're a Christian who has drifted

  744. back into chasing empty things, vanity

  745. of vanities, says the preacher, all is

  746. vanity and vexation of the spirit.

  747. Then you can come back tonight and you

  748. can say the same words. I am resolved

  749. because Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou

  750. hast the words of eternal life. John 6

    John 6:68

  751. verse 68. If you're sub invitation,

  752. call, won't you be resolved? Won't you

  753. come as we stand and sing the song

  754. that's been selected?

  755. I am reserve

  756. the Lord my

  757. praise

  758. praise unto to him

  759. and Jesus

  760. highest.

  761. I will come to thee.

  762. I am resolved to go to the Savior,

  763. leaving my sin and stri

  764. He is the true one. He is the just one.

  765. We have the words

  766. to him.

  767. So glad

  768. and Jesus

  769. great is highest.

  770. I will come to thee.

  771. I am resolved to follow the Savior,

  772. faithful and truly

  773. do what he will.

  774. He is the living

  775. way.

  776. to him.

  777. So glad

  778. and Jesus

  779. Jesus

  780. greatest

  781. will come to me.

  782. Please be seated.
