  1. In our last lesson,

  2. at least when I was here the last time,

  3. two Sundays ago,

  4. we stood with Peter by the sea.

  5. It's in John chapter 21 where we saw a

    John 21 chapter mention

  6. man who had failed deeply

  7. but who was not finished.

  8. Three times Peter had denied the Lord.

  9. And three times Jesus asked him, "Do you

  10. love me?"

  11. In John 21 in the passage there and

  12. verse 15 down through verse 17.

  13. And

  14. each time Peter affirmed his love,

  15. Jesus gave him work to do. Three times

  16. Jesus said to feed my lambs, tend my

  17. sheep, feed my sheep.

  18. That scene teaches us that Jesus does

  19. not restore us merely so we can feel

  20. better about the past.

  21. He restores us so that we can live

  22. faithfully in the present and be useful

  23. in his service moving forward.

  24. And one of the passages that we noted at

  25. the end of that particular lesson

  26. was 2 Corinthians chapter 5. And I

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  27. didn't expound on that. I I gave a few,

  28. I guess you would say, notes on that as

  29. we were closing the lesson. So I want to

  30. kind of go on that just a little bit

  31. more this morning. But what we notice in

  32. 2 Corinthians 5:es 14 and 15, Paul said,

  33. "For the love of Christ compels us,

  34. because we judge thus, that if one died

  35. for all, then all died. And he died for

  36. all that those who live should live no

  37. longer for themselves, but for him who

  38. died for them and rose again."

  39. Well, that was Peter, as we talked about

  40. uh in that last lesson. And once living

  41. in fear, he's now living for Christ.

  42. Once denying the Lord, now serving the

  43. Lord and once broken by failure, now

  44. restored for purpose. And as Paul

  45. continues by saying that God in verse 18

  46. that all now all things are of God who

  47. has reconciled us to himself through

  48. Jesus Christ and has given us the

  49. ministry of reconciliation.

  50. And you know he goes on to verse 20 even

  51. when he says now then we are ambassadors

  52. for Christ as though God were pleading

  53. through us

  54. we implore you on Christ's behalf be

  55. reconciled to God. So what we have done

  56. and throughout I guess you call this a

  57. miniseries is what has happened here

  58. right uh we have moved from burning

  59. hearts on the road remember that of the

  60. uh to restored love by the sea and now

  61. to witnessing

  62. lives before the world.

  63. But before Jesus sends his disciples out

  64. as witnesses Luke shows us something

  65. important. He shows us that their

  66. witness rest on the reality of the

  67. resurrection. When you go to your in

  68. your Bibles, go to Luke chapter 24. Luke

Luke 24 chapter mention Luke 24 chapter mention

  69. chapter 24. This kind of comes all the

  70. way back full circle of what we were

  71. doing and starting in this miniseries.

  72. Uh and that is of course in Luke 24 as

  73. we use this as really the main text.

  74. We'll start here Luke 24. And we're

  75. going to be finding ourselves in verse

  76. 36 on down from that chapter because

  77. we're going to be talking about this

  78. morning that you are witnesses of these

  79. things. We're going to find those very

  80. words here in Luke 24.

  81. So let's go to our first point of what

  82. we're going to find and and prove all

  83. things according to God's word. What

  84. we're going to find, I believe, is that

  85. witnesses are grounded in the reality of

  86. the risen Christ.

  87. Notice what happens in verse 36 down

  88. through verse 43 with me. Now as they

  89. said these things, Jesus himself stood

  90. in the midst of them and said to them,

  91. "Peace to you." But they were terrified

  92. and frightened and supposed that they

  93. had seen a spirit. And he said to them,

  94. "Why are you troubled and why do doubts

  95. arise in your hearts? Behold my hands

  96. and my feet that it is I myself. handle

  97. me and see, for a spirit does not have

  98. flesh and bones as you see I have. When

  99. he had said this, he showed them his

  100. hands and his feet. But while they still

  101. did not believe for joy and marveled, he

  102. said to them, "Have you any food here?"

  103. So they gave him a piece of a broiled

  104. fish and some honeycomb, and he took it

  105. and ate in their presence. I want to

  106. stop there.

  107. When you look at that verse 36, as they

  108. said these things, Jesus himself stood

  109. in the midst of them. Now again, keeping

  110. in mind that back in Luke chapter 24, we

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  111. spent that time thinking about that of

  112. uh the road to Emmas and and of course

  113. the word spreading here and Jesus

  114. appearing to his disciples here uh in

  115. this latter part again verse 36 of Luke

  116. 24. This is quite a scene when he says

  117. to them, "Peace to you." Because again,

  118. if you remember, the disciples had heard

  119. reports. The women had found the tomb

  120. empty. The Emmas disciples had returned

  121. and they were doing what? Declaring that

  122. the Lord had been made known to them in

  123. the breaking of bread. And then suddenly

  124. Jesus himself stands among them. Think

  125. about that. Okay, here's their reaction.

  126. As we notice in verse 37, they were

  127. terrified and frightened. I can only

  128. imagine and suppose that they had seen a

  129. spirit. And these were not men prepared

  130. to invent a resurrection story.

  131. These were not men eager to believe

  132. anything. They were startled. They were

  133. afraid. They were trying to understand

  134. and basically wrap their minds about

  135. what's going on. And Jesus says to them,

  136. "Why are you troubled?

  137. And why do look at that word doubts

  138. arise in your hearts?

  139. I believe that that question that Jesus

  140. asked is tender but yet probing. Okay.

  141. Uh their hearts were troubled. Their

  142. doubts were rising as we know and and

  143. again they had the risen Lord standing

  144. before them yet they were still

  145. wrestling to receive the reality of it.

  146. So Jesus gives them evidence. What's he

  147. tell them there again in verse 39? He

  148. said, "Behold my hands and my feet

  149. that it is myself."

  150. Kind of reminds you of doubting Thomas.

  151. We usually use the word doubting with

  152. Thomas, right? Thomas, "Handle me and

  153. see, for a spirit does not have flesh

  154. and bones as you see I have." And then

  155. Luke says, "When he had said this, he

  156. showed them his hands and his feet."

  157. What's Jesus doing here? He said, "I

  158. want you to know that I have truly

  159. risen from the dead." This was not a

  160. vision. This was not a ghost. This was

  161. not a merely a a spiritual impression.

  162. The same Jesus had been crucified

  163. now stood alive before them. The wounds

  164. visible.

  165. Think about that. The hands the the

  166. significance of that. The nails that

  167. were shown. The feet that have been

  168. pierced were shown. The body that had

  169. been placed in the tomb was now alive.

  170. Then Luke added another detail you

  171. notice there because you know they still

  172. did not fully believe for joy and

  173. marvel. Uh Jesus asked what was the

  174. question? You have any food here?

  175. And they gave him a piece of broiled

  176. fish and some honeycomb and he took it

  177. and ate in their presence. You ever

  178. wonder why that detail matters? You ever

  179. wonder that? It's like well that's just

  180. okay. He asked about food. Why does that

  181. matter?

  182. Jesus ate before them to show the

  183. reality of his bodily resurrection. He

  184. was not merely alive in their memories.

  185. He was not merely alive as a symbol.

  186. He was physically, truly, bodily raised

  187. from the dead.

  188. That means when Jesus says you are

  189. witnesses of these things, he's not

  190. sending them to preach speculation.

  191. Okay?

  192. He is sending them to proclaim what they

  193. had truly seen.

  194. Witnesses.

  195. They had seen him die. They had seen him

  196. buried. They had seen him alive at this

  197. time. And that gives weight to a

  198. witness, doesn't it? Friends,

  199. Christianity doesn't rest on wishful

  200. thinking. It rests on the historical

  201. reality of the death, the burial, the

  202. resurrection of Jesus Christ. Because

  203. Paul would later write as we saw in our

  204. our text of 1 Corinthians 15:es 3 and

  205. four a moment ago. For I deliver to you

  206. first of all that which also received

  207. that Christ died for our sins according

  208. to the scriptures and that he was buried

  209. and that he rose again the third day

  210. according to the scriptures.

  211. So here's the thing. Before witnesses

  212. are sent, they must be convinced of the

  213. truth.

  214. Now let me ask you a question this

  215. morning.

  216. Have we been grounded in the reality of

  217. the risen Christ ourselves?

  218. Have we been grounded in the reality of

  219. the risen Christ ourselves?

  220. Let that sink in. Go back to our text.

  221. Luke 24. We find that once the disciples

  222. are grounded in the reality of the risen

  223. Christ,

  224. Jesus goes on to open their

  225. understanding.

  226. Which brings us to the second point of

  227. the lesson. Witnesses must understand

  228. the message. Witnesses must understand

  229. the message. Look at verses 20, I'm

  230. sorry, verse uh 44 and 45 of Luke 24.

  231. Read with me. Then he said to them,

  232. "These are the words which I spoke to

  233. you while I was still with you and that

  234. all things must be fulfilled which are

  235. written in the law of Moses and the

  236. prophets and the psalms concerning me."

  237. And he opened their understanding that

  238. they might comprehend the scriptures.

  239. quite important

  240. these words that Jesus speaking to them

  241. those that he spoke to them while he was

  242. still with them all those things must be

  243. fulfilled concerning him where this

  244. takes us to the Old Testament doesn't it

  245. the law of Moses the prophets the psalms

  246. and then what did Luke say he opened

  247. their understanding they might

  248. comprehend the scriptures friends that's

  249. where witnessing begins

  250. That's where it begins. Jesus does not

  251. say first, you know, he doesn't say, you

  252. know, go tell people your opinions. He

  253. He didn't say that.

  254. He doesn't say, go tell people what you

  255. feel.

  256. Didn't say that either, did he?

  257. He opens their understanding. And

  258. friends, a faithful witness must

  259. understand the message. An ambassador, a

  260. word that we noted just a moment ago

  261. from the text of 2 Corinthians chapter

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  262. 5. An ambassador must understand the

  263. will of the king. A servant of

  264. reconciliation must understand how

  265. reconciliation has been made possible.

  266. The disciples had seen many things.

  267. There's no doubt about that. We have

  268. those records for us. But they still

  269. needed to understand the meaning of

  270. those things.

  271. They had seen the cross. They had uh

  272. heard of the empty tomb. Now they had

  273. seen the risen Lord. But Jesus is

  274. showing them that none of this was

  275. accidental.

  276. The cross was not a mistake.

  277. Their suffering, the suffering was not a

  278. failure. The resurrection was not an

  279. afterthought.

  280. It was all the fulfillment of God's

  281. plan.

  282. What Jesus is doing,

  283. the law

  284. pointed to him. What did the prophets

  285. do? Pointed to him. What did the psalms

  286. do? Pointed to him. The sacrifices

  287. pointed to him. The promises pointed to

  288. him. Go through all those scriptures.

  289. From Genesis onward, scripture was

  290. moving toward Christ. All the way back

  291. to Genesis chapter 3 and verse 15. The

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  292. seed of woman would crush the serpent's

  293. head. Hm. Who was that talking about?

  294. Right.

  295. The Passover lamb pointed forward to

  296. Christ, our Passover from Exodus chapter

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  297. 12.

  298. Isaiah spoke of the suffering servant,

  299. the suffering savior who would be

  300. wounded for our transgressions. Isaiah

  301. 53 and verse 5. Psalm 16 anticipated

  302. that God's holy one would not see

  303. corruption. Psalm 16 and verse 10. and

  304. even reiterated in Acts two and verse

  305. 31.

  306. See Jesus is making this clear again

  307. here that Jesus opened their

  308. understanding so that they could see

  309. that scripture had always been telling

  310. one great story.

  311. God was bringing salvation through Jesus

  312. Christ. And that matters for us. That

  313. matters.

  314. I'm going to tell you something. People

  315. can know Bible stories

  316. and still miss the Savior.

  317. They can know facts about Jesus and

  318. still not surrender to the meaning of

  319. the cross.

  320. Friends, there's a difference between

  321. knowing information and understanding

  322. truth. There's a difference. A person

  323. can know Jesus died but not

  324. understanding why his death was

  325. necessary. A person can know Jesus rose

  326. from the dead but not understand what

  327. his resurrection actually demands today.

  328. A person can know that baptism is

  329. commanded but not understand its

  330. connection to death, burial, and

  331. resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  332. This passage you hear quoted so many

  333. times Romans 6:es 3 and 4, I'm going to

  334. read it this morning. Verse all the way

  335. down to verse 11. You know, he first

  336. started in verse one, Romans 6. He says,

  337. "Shall we continue in sin that grace may

  338. abound?" He said, "God forbid."

  339. Certainly not. How shall we who died to

  340. sin live any longer? Right? Look at

  341. verse three. Or do you not know that as

  342. many of us as were baptized into Christ

  343. Jesus were baptized into his death?

  344. Therefore, we are buried with him

  345. through baptism into death, that just as

  346. Christ was raised from the dead. Look at

  347. this connection. By the glory of the

  348. father, even so, we also should walk in

  349. newness of life. For if we've been

  350. united together in likeness of his

  351. death, certainly we also shall be in the

  352. likeness of his what's that next word?

  353. Resurrection. Knowing this, that our old

  354. man was crucified with him, that the

  355. body of sin might be done away with,

  356. that we should no longer be slaves of

  357. sin. For he who has died has been raised

  358. has been freed from sin. Now if we die

  359. with Christ, we believe that we shall

  360. also live with him. Important, right?

  361. Verse nine. Knowing that Christ had been

  362. raised from the dead dies no more. Death

  363. no longer has dominion over him. For the

  364. death that he died, he died to sin once

  365. for all. But the life that he now lives,

  366. he lives to God. Likewise, you also

  367. reckon yourselves be dead indeed to sin,

  368. but alive to God in Christ Jesus our

  369. Lord. Friends,

  370. I believe this verse, THIS PASSAGE JUST

  371. ENCAPSULATES ALL OF THAT. Don't you see

  372. it?

  373. But again, a person can know these

  374. things but not understand connections.

  375. Again, like we talked about the puzzle

  376. not too long ago, that sermon about the

  377. master's puzzle. We got all the pieces,

  378. but just haven't put them together. Got

  379. them all connected yet.

  380. But here's the thing.

  381. Knowing versus understanding, friends,

  382. understanding changes everything.

  383. Understanding changes everything. That's

  384. why in this passage, that's what is

  385. going on with what Jesus is talking

  386. about to them. opening their

  387. understanding.

  388. Because when we understand what God has

  389. done in Christ, here's the thing.

  390. Don't miss this.

  391. When we understand what God has done in

  392. Christ, sin becomes serious.

  393. Grace becomes precious.

  394. Obedience

  395. becomes urgent, worship becomes

  396. meaningful,

  397. and souls become valuable.

  398. That's when we truly understand what God

  399. has done in Christ.

  400. What did Paul say in Sec.

  401. For the love of Christ compels us

  402. because we judge those.

  403. Paul's life was moved, friends, by a

  404. what I would call a settled conviction.

  405. I'm asking this morning, do we have a

  406. settled conviction this morning?

  407. Because he understood what Christ had

  408. done. And if Christ died for all and he

  409. makes that clear, he and he died for

  410. all.

  411. What's he say? that those who live

  412. should live no longer for themselves,

  413. but for him who died for them and rose

  414. again.

  415. What I'm impressing upon your minds this

  416. morning in this lesson is that this is

  417. where witnessing begins. We must

  418. understand what Christ has done before

  419. we can actually faithfully tell others

  420. what Christ has done. And it's not just

  421. again telling others. It's about living

  422. it out before others as a faithful

  423. witness of Jesus Christ, our savior.

  424. So this is what Jesus does in our

  425. passage. Jesus first grounds them in the

  426. reality of his resurrection. He then

  427. opens their understanding of the

  428. scriptures.

  429. But something important I believe we

  430. need to note is that understanding is

  431. not the end.

  432. Because once they understand what God

  433. has done, he gives them something to

  434. proclaim, doesn't he? He doesn't go,

  435. "Well, you got all that. All right, go

  436. home."

  437. You know, go about your lives,

  438. you know. No, that's not what he says,

  439. does he? We know that.

  440. He gives them something to proclaim. And

  441. that's what witnesses do. Witnesses

  442. carry the messes of reconciliation.

  443. Go back to your text, our text of Luke

  444. 24. Look at verses 46-48

  445. 46-48.

  446. Then he Jesus said to them, "Thus it is

  447. written, and thus it was necessary for

  448. the Christ to suffer and to rise from

  449. the dead the third day, and that

  450. repentance and remission of sins should

  451. be preached in his name to all nations,

  452. beginning at Jerusalem." And you are

  453. witnesses of these things.

  454. Jesus makes it clear that it was

  455. necessary

  456. for him to suffer and to rise from the

  457. dead the third day. It was necessary.

  458. And that word necessary truly does

  459. matter because it was necessary for

  460. Christ to suffer because sin had to be

  461. dealt with.

  462. It was necessary for Christ to rise

  463. because death had to be defeated. It was

  464. necessary because prophecy had to be

  465. fulfilled. It was necessary because man

  466. could not save himself.

  467. And then Jesus gives the message. What

  468. was it? And that repentance and

  469. remission of sins should be preached in

  470. his name to all nations beginning at

  471. Jerusalem.

  472. This is the message that witnesses

  473. carry. This is this is it.

  474. Now I want you to notice doesn't say not

  475. you know not so one can just well just

  476. be a better person not merely well just

  477. try harder not merely just be religious

  478. not those types of things he said the

  479. message is repentance and remission of

  480. sins in the name of Jesus Christ

  481. those words have weight

  482. because when you think about repentance

  483. that means there's there must be a

  484. turning point.

  485. A sinner cannot cling to sin and claim

  486. to be reconciled to God.

  487. What we I quoted from Romans 6 and verse

  488. one.

  489. Shall we continue in sin that grace may

  490. abound?

  491. God forbid. Certainly not. He said

  492. that's the point that's being made.

  493. Because repentance is not merely, you

  494. know, regret. It is a changed mind

  495. toward sin and toward God that produces

  496. a changed life.

  497. Paul said God commands all men

  498. everywhere to do what? Repent. Acts 17

  499. and verse 30. And then Jesus goes on and

  500. he speaks of what? Remission of sins.

  501. What's remission of sins? Forgiveness.

  502. You might use the word release.

  503. the the blessing of no longer having

  504. sins held against the one who comes to

  505. God through Christ.

  506. There's many passages of course that

  507. talk about this,

  508. but this is where Luke 24 and 2

  509. Corinthians 5 meet beautifully

  510. because Jesus says remission of sins

  511. must be preached. And Paul says God was

  512. in Christ reconciling reconciling the

  513. world to himself. Look at verses 18 and

  514. 19. 2 Corinthians 5.

  515. Now all things are of God who has

  516. reconciled us to himself through Jesus

  517. Christ and has given us the ministry of

  518. reconciliation. Look at verse 19. That

  519. is that God was in Christ reconciling

  520. the world to himself not imputing their

  521. trespasses to them and has committed to

  522. us the word of reconciliation.

  523. What is he saying? That's remission.

  524. That's forgiveness. That's the gospel.

  525. God has made a way for sins not to be

  526. counted against those who are reconciled

  527. to him through Christ.

  528. I want you to notice something here.

  529. This is what he says as witnesses,

  530. you're going to go and do these things,

  531. right? You're going to go do this.

  532. You're witnesses.

  533. And then he says, where do we, you know,

  534. the my where do we begin?

  535. Well, they didn't have to ask that

  536. question because what did Jesus tell

  537. them?

  538. It's beginning at Jerusalem. I think

  539. that's significant. I I want us to

  540. notice this because I believe that's the

  541. amazing grace here. Speaking loudly

  542. because Jerusalem was the city where

  543. Jesus had been what? Rejected.

  544. Jerusalem was a city where the crowd

  545. cried crucify him. Jerusalem was a city

  546. where the innocent son of God was

  547. condemned. So there's meaning to that.

  548. And and when and yet Jesus says the

  549. message of repentance and forgiveness

  550. would begin there

  551. because the gospel begins where guilt

  552. was great.

  553. Grace is preached where sin had been

  554. committed. Forgiveness is offered where

  555. rejection had taken place.

  556. And that means no heart is beyond the

  557. reach of the gospel.

  558. No past is so dark that Christ's blood

  559. cannot cleanse it. No sinner is so far

  560. away that reconciliation cannot be

  561. offered.

  562. And I want you to think about who would

  563. preach this message in Jerusalem.

  564. Who would that be?

  565. Peter.

  566. We know that, don't we? From Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  567. chapter 2. That same Peter who denied

  568. Jesus. The same Peter who Jesus restored

  569. by the sea. The same Peter who heard

  570. feed my sheep. Tend my sheep. Feed my

  571. sheep.

  572. And what did he do in Acts chapter 2?

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  573. What did Peter do?

  574. Did he preach repentance?

  575. Did he preach remission of sins?

  576. Yes, he did. Look at Acts two.

  577. Therefore, let all the house of Israel

  578. know as assurely that God has made this

  579. Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and

  580. Christ. Now when they heard this, they

  581. were cut to the heart and said to Peter

  582. and the rest of the apostles, "Men and

  583. brethren, what shall we do?" Then Peter

  584. said to them, "Repent,

  585. and let everyone be baptized in the name

  586. of Jesus Christ for the remission of

  587. sins, and you shall receive the gift of

  588. the Holy Spirit."

  589. Peter stood there in Jerusalem. Look

  590. what we're studying in Luke 24. And what

  591. Paul said in 2 CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 5,

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  592. THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.

  593. There it is. Luke 24 fulfilled in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  594. chapter 2. Repentance, remission of sins

  595. in the name of Jesus Christ, beginning

  596. at Jerusalem. Is that not interesting?

  597. And preached by Peter, a restored man,

  598. preaching restoration to others. Is that

  599. not the message of 2 Corinthians chapter

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  600. 5 as we read?

  601. Because friends, I'm going to submit to

  602. you this morning, that's the pattern.

  603. That's the pattern.

  604. We receive grace and then we tell others

  605. where grace can be found. Y'all remember

  606. my favorite saying, right? It's going to

  607. be my tombstone one day, right? I'm just

  608. a beggar who found bread, showing other

  609. beggars where the bread is at. That's

  610. the very meaning behind that is we

  611. receive grace and we tell others where

  612. grace can be found. Here is the bread of

  613. life.

  614. Because we receive forgiveness and we

  615. point others to that forgiveness. We are

  616. reconciled and we carry the word of

  617. reconciliation.

  618. That's exactly what we're talking about

  619. here. This is the pattern.

  620. Because again going back to that word

  621. ambassador that we see in this passage,

  622. ambassadors represent someone greater

  623. than himself.

  624. An ambassador does not go and speak his

  625. own message.

  626. An ambassador does not promote their own

  627. agenda.

  628. The ambassador carries the message of

  629. the one who sent it.

  630. And friends, that is who we are. We

  631. represent Christ because what does that

  632. passage say? We are ambassadors for

  633. Christ.

  634. And if I am an ambassador for Christ,

  635. then my words matter,

  636. my conduct matters, my attitude matters,

  637. my priorities matter, my reactions

  638. matter because others may form

  639. impressions of Christ by the way I

  640. represent him. And Paul says, "As though

  641. God were pleading through us,

  642. we implore you on Christ's behalf, be

  643. reconciled to God." What a thought

  644. that God pleads through his people. He

  645. uses human voices to carry his divine

  646. appeal.

  647. He uses restored sinners to call other

  648. sinners to restoration.

  649. He uses reconciled people to speak the

  650. word of reconciliation.

  651. Friends, our mission

  652. that he has given us

  653. is to be carried out with humility. We

  654. we we do not speak as people who never

  655. needed mercy. We need mercy every day.

  656. We speak as people who have received

  657. mercy. We don't call others to Christ

  658. with arrogance as if we're better than

  659. everyone else.

  660. We call them with gratitude.

  661. Because where love is real, obedience

  662. follows.

  663. Where reconciliation is received,

  664. reconciliation flows.

  665. Friends, where Christ has restored a

  666. heart,

  667. Christ sends that heart into service.

  668. Well,

  669. let me tell you, when we start hearing

  670. that mission statement, that can feel

  671. overwhelming.

  672. to understand the message, to carry the

  673. message, and to represent Christ as

  674. ambassadors. That's that's that's got

  675. some weight to it because we might say,

  676. "Well, who's sufficient for these

  677. things, right?

  678. Who can do that?"

  679. And that leads us to our next truth, and

  680. that is witnesses are sent under the

  681. authority of the risen Christ. Go back

  682. to the text, Luke 24, the latter part,

  683. verses 49 down through verse 53. I want

  684. us to look at that.

  685. We're going to tie this in to Acts

  686. chapter one. All right, here we go.

  687. Behold, I send the promise of my father

  688. upon you, but tar in the city of

  689. Jerusalem until you are endued with

  690. power from on high. And he led them out

  691. as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his

  692. hands and blessed them. Now it came to

  693. pass while he blessed them that he was

  694. parted from them and carried up into

  695. heaven. and they worshiped him and

  696. returned to Jerusalem with great joy and

  697. were continually in the temple praising

  698. and blessing God. Amen.

  699. Now, when you read that sometimes we we

  700. stop with Luke 24,

  701. but there's something that we have to

  702. understand in regards to the ascension,

  703. right? Because a lot of times we go from

  704. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and then we go to

  705. John. But if you take Luke 24 and then

  706. you go on and then look at Acts chapter

  707. one, what does that do? It gives us the

  708. fuller picture. Okay? Because Luke

  709. begins Acts by referring to his former

  710. account. Do you ever notice that? Who

  711. wrote the book of Luke? Obviously Luke.

  712. Who wrote the book of Acts? We got Luke.

  713. Notice this.

  714. Acts chapter 1 and verse one. The former

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  715. account I made, O Theoples, of all that

  716. Jesus began both to do and teach. Let me

  717. tell you something. That wording is so

  718. important. So important. Because Luke's

  719. gospel records what Jesus began to do

  720. and teach. And then when you go to the

  721. book of Acts shows what the risen and

  722. ascended Christ continue to do through

  723. his apostles and through the spread of

  724. the gospel.

  725. The ascension did not end the work of

  726. Christ. Jesus is still working through

  727. his word. Jesus still reigning over his

  728. kingdom as he sit at the right hand of

  729. the throne of God. He's still sending

  730. forth his message. And Jesus is still

  731. using his people as instruments of

  732. reconciliation.

  733. What verse three of Acts one say? To

  734. whom he also presented himself alive

  735. after his suffering by many proofs

  736. appearing to them over 40 days and

  737. speaking of things pertaining to the

  738. kingdom of God. The apostles were not

  739. sent out with rumors. They were not uh

  740. sent out with guesses. They were not

  741. sent out with uncertain impressions.

  742. They were sent out with certainty. They

  743. knew he had suffered. They knew he had

  744. died. They knew he had been buried. They

  745. knew he had been risen from the dead.

  746. And they knew he was alive.

  747. Verse eight, what's he say? But you

  748. shall receive power when the Holy Spirit

  749. has come upon you. And you shall be,

  750. there's that word again,

  751. witnesses to me in Jerusalem and all

  752. Judea and Samaria and the end of the

  753. earth.

  754. Friends, the apostles had a unique role

  755. as eyewitnesses of the resurrected

  756. Christ. They would receive miraculous

  757. power of their unique for their unique

  758. work. The Holy Spirit would come upon

  759. them in a special way in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  760. confirming the message and empowering

  761. the apostolic mission.

  762. But the principle still teaches us

  763. something vital. What's the principle?

  764. God's work must be done in dependence

  765. upon God's power. Remember we how many

  766. times we used over the last several

  767. weeks. We sew the word, right? We cast

  768. the seed, we plant, we water, and who

  769. gives the increase? God does. First

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  770. Corinthians chapter 3. Because yeah,

  771. we're not apostles. We're not we're not

  772. eyewitnesses in the same way that they

  773. were. But what do we have today?

  774. his word.

  775. We still depend on what the spirit

  776. revealed through the apostles and the

  777. prophets. We depend on the inspired word

  778. as Paul told Timothy in Saint chapter 3

  779. and verses 16 and 17. We depend on the

  780. gospel which is still God's power to

  781. save today. We depend on prayer. We

  782. depend on God's providence. We depend on

  783. the strength that he supplies.

  784. We still depend on.

  785. So there's no out for us. Okay? There's

  786. no out for us. Saying, "I just can't."

  787. Nope. That's not Nope. You're witnesses.

  788. Guess what?

  789. You have the word of reconciliation.

  790. And we take that word. It's not our

  791. word.

  792. It's God's word.

  793. It's been revealed.

  794. that scope of the mission that you see

  795. there in verse eight as well says in

  796. Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and

  797. the end of the earth. I want you to I

  798. want you to just I was having this

  799. thought when I was reading this uh for

  800. the millionth time in my life. You know

  801. sometimes that's probably over

  802. exaggeration. All right. Um

  803. I want you to notice this. This is

  804. something very interesting to me

  805. why there's this progression of

  806. Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and

  807. the end of of the earth. And I want us

  808. to make this hit home with us. Okay?

  809. Jerusalem was where Jesus was rejected.

  810. Judea is the surrounding region. Samaria

  811. is the people that many Jews avoided.

  812. And the end of the earth is the gospel

  813. that's for all nations. All right? kind

  814. of get that in your mind.

  815. The interesting thing about this is the

  816. witnesses begin where they are, but it

  817. doesn't stop there. Okay.

  818. How do we apply that to our life today?

  819. Our Jerusalem

  820. may be our home. Start with your home

  821. first.

  822. That that that's where it's right there.

  823. Home base.

  824. Our Judea is our surrounding region.

  825. Let's call that our community.

  826. Let's talk about our Samaria for a

  827. moment as well. That might be people

  828. outside our comfort zone.

  829. And the end of the earth reminds us that

  830. the gospel is bigger than our personal

  831. circle.

  832. It's bigger than our personal circle.

  833. Sometimes we think witnessing must be

  834. dramatic. It must be distant. But often

  835. it begins in ordinary places. It begins

  836. in our homes. It begins with our

  837. children. It begins in our

  838. conversations. It begins at work. It

  839. begins how we respond under pressure. It

  840. begins when we invite, we encourage,

  841. when we teach. Friends, when we speak,

  842. there are people around us who need to

  843. hear. Be reconciled to God.

  844. That pattern is still the same today.

  845. We are witnesses of

  846. Luke 24:50 and 51. You notice that we

    Luke 24:50

  847. read that a moment ago when Jesus leads

  848. them out as far as Beth liop's hand, he

  849. blesses them.

  850. What I love about these two verses is is

  851. the last sight is not of an angry Lord.

  852. Uh he's not a disappointed Lord. He's

  853. not a distant Lord. It is the risen Lord

  854. lifting his hands in blessing.

  855. And before they go on into the world as

  856. witnesses, they stand under the blessing

  857. of Christ. What what a what an image for

  858. us

  859. because Acts one gives us really the

  860. fuller ascension scene because after

  861. Jesus speaks these things, he is taken

  862. up. Cloud receives him out of their

  863. sight in verse 9. And as they stand

  864. looking toward heaven, two men in white

  865. apparel asked, "Men of Galilee, why do

  866. you stand gazing up into heaven?"

  867. That question is so powerful. I love

  868. that question. There there is a time to

  869. look up, look upward and worship,

  870. but there's also a time to go forward in

  871. mission and go do something.

  872. And the angel, they continue by saying

  873. that this same Jesus who was taken up

  874. into heaven will come in like manner as

  875. they saw him go. You know what that

  876. says? That gives urgency to our witness.

  877. Jesus came, Jesus died, buried, rose

  878. again, ascended, he reigns, and Jesus is

  879. coming again.

  880. You know what that says to us right now

  881. today? Is that mission matters more than

  882. anything else on the face of this earth.

  883. the mission that souls matter, the

  884. gospel matters, and reconciliation

  885. matters. Not five years from now, not 10

  886. years from now, not when I'm retired.

  887. No, the gospel matters now.

  888. Souls matter now.

  889. Luke says the disciples worshiped him,

  890. returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

  891. And what did they do? They continually

  892. praised and blessed God

  893. because worship and witness actually

  894. belongs together. Friends,

  895. if our worship grows cold, our witness

  896. will likely grow weak. If our praise

  897. disappears, our boldness will often

  898. fade. And if we forget the glory of

  899. Christ, we will lose the urgency of our

  900. mission. the whole point of us being

  901. here today and our whole life and our

  902. purpose under the sun.

  903. But friends, when hearts are filled with

  904. praise, mouths are more than ready to

  905. speak.

  906. What we have done even in the last two

  907. lessons is we went from restored love to

  908. witnessing lives.

  909. I want you to think again as we close

  910. the lesson about the movement of these

  911. resurrection appearances because we have

  912. noticed several of them

  913. on the road to Emmas. Confused hearts

  914. began to burn when Jesus opened the

  915. scriptures.

  916. By the sea of Tiberius, Peter's broken

  917. love was restored when Jesus asked, "Do

  918. you love me?" In Luke 24, restored

  919. disciples are commissioned as witnesses.

  920. In Acts one, Jesus gives the scope of

  921. that witness. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,

  922. and the end of the earth. And Paul told

  923. us what in 2 Corinthians chapter 5. He

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  924. told us what that means. We are

  925. ambassadors for Christ. So, we are not

  926. merely uh people who believe the

  927. resurrection happened.

  928. We are people who live in light of it.

  929. We're not merely forgiven. We are sent.

  930. We We're not merely restored. We are

  931. called. We're not merely Christians in

  932. name. We are ambassadors for Christ

  933. today. We are witnesses for Christ

  934. today. And we don't go forward along.

  935. That's what we've learned in this lesson

  936. as well. That Christ who ascended is the

  937. Christ who reigns. He is the Christ who

  938. sins. He is the Christ who will return.

  939. So let us not stand still when there is

  940. actually a message to carry.

  941. Let us not remain silent when there are

  942. souls who need reconciliation because we

  943. are witnesses of these things. We are

  944. ambassadors for Christ. And when love

  945. for Christ is real, it not only restores

  946. us, friends, it sends us.

  947. Maybe someone today

  948. needs to be reconciled to God. The

  949. message has been made abundantly clear

  950. from God's word. The message is still

  951. the same. Again, what do we say? Christ

  952. suffered. Christ died, buried, rose

  953. again, ascended, reigns, and you know

  954. what else? Christ will return. And

  955. because of him, repentance and remission

  956. of sins are preached this morning in his

  957. name. And if you believe Jesus is the

  958. Christ, turn from sin, confess his name,

  959. and be baptized for the remission of

  960. sins as we saw in Romans chapter 6. Do

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  961. that this morning. Or maybe you are

  962. already a Christian, but your witness

  963. has grown quiet. Maybe your love needs

  964. to be rekindled. Maybe your purpose

  965. needs to be renewed.

  966. Maybe

  967. you need to remember

  968. that you are not just saved from

  969. something,

  970. but you are saved for something.

  971. Come back to the Lord. Let's let

  972. restored love become faithful service.

  973. Let reconciliation

  974. receive become reconciliation shared

  975. because Jesus still says you are

  976. witnesses of these things.

  977. Paul still reminds us we are ambassadors

  978. for Christ. Friends, I want to thank you

  979. so much for your kind attention, for

  980. being here this morning and endeavoring

  981. in this study from Luke chapter 24 and 2

Luke 24 chapter mention 2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  982. Corinthians chapter 5 as well as Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  983. chapter 1. That was a lot of information

  984. I wanted to impart with you to bring

  985. this miniseries, I guess you would say,

  986. to a close. I hope that this series of

  987. lessons has opened our understanding or

  988. has at least reinforced our

  989. understanding even of what we're doing

  990. today. Why is it so important?

  991. Because well, we've been talking about

  992. God's plan of salvation. And you know

  993. what? One day

  994. Christ will return as those angels said.

  995. He will come in like manage. You saw him

  996. as

  997. the question will be

  998. that when the role is called up younger,

  999. we'll be there.

1000. Is our name going to be on the role? And

1001. we say that word, we know from

1002. revelation what that means. That our

1003. name written in the lamb's book of life.

1004. Can we say with certainty according to

  1005. God's word, our name?

1006. Because we're are witnesses and our

1007. witness name. It's in there because

1008. we're going about and we're living the

1009. life that God has called us to because

1010. the trumpet shall sound and the dead

1011. shall be raised incredible and we shall

1012. be changed. What a beautiful site there

  1013. in First Corinthians 15 verse 52.

    1 Corinthians 15:52
