  1. There are few influences in this world

  2. as powerful, as quiet, and as lasting as

  3. that of a godly mother.

  4. Long before a child understands

  5. doctrine,

  6. long before they grasp even the

  7. structure of scripture, they are

  8. watching, they are listening, they are

  9. absorbing.

  10. Not sermons from a pull pit, but sermons

  11. lived out in a home.

  12. And I would submit to you that some of

  13. the strongest faith that has ever

  14. existed was first shaped at a mother's

  15. knee.

  16. Today, we honor mothers and we do more

  17. than celebrate a role. We recognize a

  18. Godgiven influence that has eternal

  19. consequences.

  20. And while not everyone here is a mother,

  21. every one of us has been influenced by

  22. someone. And every one of us is

  23. influencing someone. And I hope you see

  24. that throughout this lesson because it's

  25. not just about mothers this morning.

  26. It's about a faith that shapes

  27. generations.

  28. A faith that shapes generations.

  29. I want you to go to second Timothy

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  30. chapter 1. This sermon

  31. comes from that very verse. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  32. chapter 1. There's other passages that

  33. I'm going to share with you this morning

  34. obviously,

  35. but 2 Timothy chapter 1 and verse 5,

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  36. we're going to learn some things. And

  37. again, not just uh maybe things that

  38. we've already known, but again

  39. reinforcing those things that we've

  40. already known and look and do some

  41. self-examination in our lives. Because

  42. as I mentioned in

  43. the introduction here already

  44. that we're talking about

  45. the sermons that's lived out in a home.

  46. And as they think about a mother's faith

  47. is often the first Bible that a child

  48. reads. Did you know that?

  49. I want you to look at second Timothy 1

  50. and verse 5. Paul's telling Timothy, he

  51. says,

  52. "When I call to remembrance the genuine

  53. faith that is in you,

  54. which dwelt first in your grandmother

  55. Lois, and your mother Ununice,

  56. and I am persuaded is in you also." I

  57. want you to think about what Paul is

  58. saying to young Timothy here. Think

  59. about that.

  60. Timothy's faith did not begin in a

  61. classroom setting, if you will. It did

  62. not begin with Paul.

  63. Where did it begin?

  64. Home.

  65. Paul says that faith dwelt first

  66. in Lois, then Ununice, then Timothy. So

  67. faith was passed down. We might use

  68. those words not genetically speaking

  69. but spiritually

  70. that teaches us something powerful that

  71. faith is not just taught as we think

  72. about it can be caught. The influence

  73. that we're talking about is that

  74. children may not remember every lesson

  75. but they remember what they see. Y'all

  76. know that

  77. they see how one handles hardship and

  78. difficulties. They see how one responds

  79. to pressure. They see whether our faith

  80. is real

  81. or just Sunday deep.

  82. Yes, a mother's life often becomes the

  83. first Bible her child reads.

  84. A child once said this, "I learned to

  85. pray not because my mother told me to,

  86. but because I saw her do it when she

  87. thought no one was watching."

  88. that has power in it because what I see

  89. from that that's genuine faith

  90. that the influence

  91. is greater than one may ever realize

  92. even in the small moments when I say

  93. what's a small moment I would say a

  94. small moment maybe a bedtime prayer a

  95. scripture read at the table a quiet

  96. moment of trusting God those moments are

  97. shaping ing souls.

  98. And for all of us, the principle still

  99. stands.

  100. Someone is reading your life today.

  101. Someone's reading it.

  102. Let me also submit to you that a

  103. mother's instruction must be rooted in

  104. God's word. Go to Second Timothy chapter

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  105. 3. If you go over a couple chapters, 2

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  106. Timothy chapter 3, I want you to look at

  107. verses 14 and 15. And and pay attention.

  108. Sometimes, you know, we we read these

  109. passages and we just kind of go on. But

  110. notice what's being stated specifically

  111. in 2 Timothy chapter 3 verses 14 and 15.

    2 Timothy 3:14

  112. But you must continue. Again, Paul's

  113. talking to Timothy. But you must

  114. continue in the things which you have

  115. learned and been assured of, knowing

  116. from whom you have learned them. And

  117. from that childhood

  118. you have known the holy scriptures which

  119. are able to make you wise for salvation

  120. through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

  121. I want you to notice this carefully.

  122. Timothy didn't just have a faithful

  123. mother. He had a mother who taught him

  124. scriptures,

  125. the scriptures, the word of God. And and

  126. and again, I would submit to you there's

  127. a difference between between raising a

  128. good child and raising a godly child.

  129. There's a difference. There's a

  130. distinction that the scriptures even

  131. make known of this because good behavior

  132. is not something that saves.

  133. Only truth does that. Only truth saves.

  134. And so the home must be a place where

  135. God's word is present and prevalent.

  136. It's not just owned, it's open. It's not

  137. just displayed, it's discussed.

  138. It's not just heard, it's applied.

  139. Deuteronomy chapter 6 and 7 from our

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  140. scripture reading this morning, brother

  141. Daniel Cecil read. Daniel uh Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:6

  142. chapter 6 verse 6 and 7. Look at it

  143. again. And these words which I command

  144. you today shall be in your where heart.

  145. You shall teach them. How often you

  146. going to teach them? Sunday come around.

  147. Maybe a Wednesday. We might have some

  148. more. Right. No. He said you shall teach

  149. them diligently to your children and

  150. shall talk with them where?

  151. When we get to services in our Bible

  152. classes.

  153. Maybe there's something bad that goes on

  154. in the house. will bring out the Bible

  155. will talk about it. That's not what it

  156. says. And shall talk of them when you

  157. sit in your house, when you walk by the

  158. way, when you lie down, and when you

  159. rise up. Sounds like diligence, doesn't

  160. it? That sounds like persistence.

  161. It says diligently, not occasionally.

  162. Because the danger today is where we're

  163. living in a world, in a society where

  164. culture teaches louder than parents do.

  165. Y'all know that

  166. screens

  167. disciple more than scripture

  168. and truth is often replaced with

  169. opinion. That's the problems. And if

  170. God's word is not intentionally and and

  171. diligently taught as the scripture says,

  172. the world will gladly fill that void. I

  173. promise you, the world will do that.

  174. So, mothers, fathers, our day is coming

  175. in June, by the way.

  176. We have to be intentional.

  177. We speak scripture into daily life.

  178. That's what we do. We use everyday

  179. moments as teaching moments.

  180. We make God part of normal conversation.

  181. Let me tell you something here, friends.

  182. If your child looks at you crazy because

  183. you started talking about God and Jesus

  184. and and the Bible at any given moment on

  185. any given day, that's an issue.

  186. Why? Why do I say that?

  187. Because when you look at second Timothy,

  188. we saw in chapter 1 and verse five,

  189. when Lois or Ununice said something from

  190. the the scriptures,

  191. Timothy is not going what they talking

  192. about, right? He didn't do that because

  193. that was part of Timothy's norm. Y'all

  194. see that

  195. norm?

  196. because his mother and grandmother made

  197. it that way.

  198. Friends, I believe that Lois and Ununice

  199. understood something that we need to

  200. certainly understand still to this day.

  201. And that is if we don't teach truth,

  202. someone will teach error.

  203. Absolutely.

  204. Make God part of normal conversation.

  205. And I'll say no matter how old a child

  206. gets, my mother and I still have

  207. conversations about God, about Jesus,

  208. about the Bible, about not just because,

  209. well, DJ's a preacher, right? Cuz she

  210. wants to know what I'm preaching on

  211. Sunday usually, too.

  212. Are you prepared?

  213. Yes, mom.

  214. Because that's our norm.

  215. That was my norm growing up in a house.

  216. Not that we didn't have trouble because

  217. we did. But you know what? Every

  218. trouble, where did we go for it?

  219. We didn't look for man's opinions and

  220. all those other things. We went to God's

  221. word and said, "That's that's the

  222. solution."

  223. And I'm thankful for it to this day.

  224. Let me submit to you this one. A

  225. mother's faith is proven through

  226. sacrifice and perseverance.

  227. You know, a lot of times I think about

  228. Hannah. Hannah's one of those that comes

  229. up in scripture a lot of times.

  230. 1st Samuel chapter 1, we read about her

  231. and some of the things that's notable

  232. about Hannah obviously is, you know, she

  233. was barren. She she longed for a child.

  234. Uh she prayed with tears. She she even

  235. made a vow to the Lord, didn't she? And

  236. and when God answered her prayer, she

  237. did something remarkable. And I honest

  238. 1st Samuel chapter 1 and verses 27 and

  239. 28. I want you to look at this.

  240. 1st Samuel 1:es 27-28. For this child I

  241. prayed, and the Lord has granted me my

  242. petition which I asked of him.

  243. Therefore, I also have lent him to the

  244. Lord. as long as he lives, he shall be

  245. lent to the Lord. So they worship the

  246. Lord there.

  247. This is remarkable here to me because

  248. she gave her child back to God.

  249. He would serve, wouldn't he? He would

  250. serve.

  251. The very thing she prayed for, she

  252. entrusted back to the one who gave the

  253. Lord. And and again, what I want to

  254. point out in that is that that really is

  255. getting to the very heart of a godly

  256. mother who is willing to sacrifice,

  257. who's willing to trust, who's willing to

  258. put God first, even above her own

  259. desires.

  260. Because motherhood is not easy.

  261. Long nights,

  262. endless patience, emotional strength,

  263. spiritual endurance, and often it goes

  264. unnoticed.

  265. But God sees it. Yet we're all reminded

  266. of this very same truth from Galatians 6

  267. and verse 9. And let us not grow weary

  268. while doing good. For in due season we

  269. shall reap if we do not lose heart.

  270. You know, I know my own mother who I've

  271. watched just throughout my life, you

  272. know, feels tired. You know, I've

  273. watched Kinsey feels tired, hair all

  274. different places when I walk through the

  275. door and I'm thinking, "What happened?

  276. Are you okay?"

  277. Right. Yeah, that's the first question

  278. she wants to hear.

  279. And then I just close the door and I go

  280. back. No, I'm joking.

  281. I know better. Okay, I know better.

  282. But sometimes that's the question that

  283. comes up.

  284. Am I even making a difference?

  285. Am I making a difference?

  286. Well, I can answer that question. You

  287. are. You are making a difference.

  288. Your children being in Bible class,

  289. you're making a difference. You're

  290. you're putting out that effort, that

  291. extras. Yep. We we we need to make sure

  292. when you open that Bible and you have

  293. Bible study with them throughout the day

  294. at any given part of the day, you talk

  295. about God, you pray with them, you know,

  296. that influence that you're leaving that

  297. that mark, that's what they're going to

  298. remember. There's a lot of things that

  299. you can be involved in. Yeah, that's,

  300. you know, those things are good in of

  301. themselves, you know, of of different

  302. activities, but this one right here has

  303. eternal. This is eternal right here.

  304. That's the That's the part that's the

  305. one that holds the most weight. So

  306. seeds planted in faith will produce

  307. fruit in time. Now again, we we like to

  308. have things right now. I know that's the

  309. way we are. Plant a seed in the ground

  310. and we're like, we hope to have some

  311. tomatoes later. We know today. That's

  312. not the way that works. Okay. It's the

  313. same way with the word.

  314. You plant the seeds, you water, and God

  315. will give the increase.

  316. Our position,

  317. every one of us, our position is always

  318. to stay faithful. Always remain

  319. faithful.

  320. Because what I see when I look at the

  321. scriptures

  322. and this prime example that I'm using

  323. this morning

  324. is a mother's influence can shape

  325. generations

  326. for God.

  327. You know, when you go back to our our

  328. passage there, we start out with 2

  329. Timothy 1 and verse 5. I I want you to

  330. notice again what we might call the

  331. story of of Lois, Ununice, Timothy.

  332. This is not just about three people.

  333. Sometimes we might look at it and we

  334. might say, "Well, all I see is three

  335. people in that verse.

  336. I see Lois, I see Ununas, and I see

  337. Timothy." And Paul's al he's talking to

  338. him.

  339. But I want you to notice that there's

  340. something else that happens here

  341. that we might miss.

  342. When I talk about generational faith,

  343. the point that I'm saying is one life is

  344. influencing another and that life is

  345. influencing another.

  346. And Timothy would go on to do what?

  347. Preach the gospel,

  348. which means a mother's faith helped

  349. spread the truth to countless souls.

  350. Now, there's a lot more to that verse

  351. than we thought.

  352. You think about it this way.

  353. When a mother raises a child in the

  354. Lord, she's not just raising the child.

  355. She is shaping a future Christian.

  356. She is shaping a future spouse.

  357. Right? See, I think about this a lot all

  358. the time really as my kids are getting

  359. older,

  360. right? Because do you know the spouse

  361. that I want them to have is one whose

  362. families have been devoted to them in

  363. teaching them truth and ingraining the

  364. the very life of what it means to be a

  365. Christian, a disciple

  366. because I want them to have the same

  367. mind,

  368. right?

  369. I want them to have the same mind as to

  370. what the scriptures present. So when I'm

  371. saying, "Hey, who's growing up out there

  372. in the church? Who's growing up out

  373. there?" Yes.

  374. I want them to find a spouse

  375. that has the very same values, the very

  376. same morals, the very same instruction

  377. from God's holy divine word.

  378. I don't want just a good person that's

  379. good. I want a godly person for my

  380. children

  381. and mothers and again fathers even

  382. is shaping

  383. a future parent.

  384. You're shaping a future influence.

  385. So it's more than just saying I'm I'm

  386. doing this. This has farreaching effects

  387. to generations to come.

  388. And we should always say that's

  389. important because that's exactly God's

  390. design even from the very beginning.

  391. Those

  392. lead to hard conversations, don't. It

  393. does.

  394. And I'm sure as Lois and Ununice spoke

  395. to Timothy,

  396. preparing him for life

  397. in midst of some very difficult things

  398. that he was going to face.

  399. It was important to them because of the

  400. of who his life would influence later

  401. on.

  402. Proverbs 31 verse 28 says her children

    Proverbs 31:28

  403. rise up and call her blessed her husband

  404. also and he praises her.

  405. You know we know Proverbs 31 is the the

  406. virtuous woman. It's a beautiful passage

  407. from the book of Proverbs. And you know

  408. we sometimes ask the question well why

  409. like Proverbs 31:28 why why do they do

    Proverbs 31:28

  410. that why do the children and and and and

  411. and uh her husband also

  412. because her life

  413. le is leaving a legacy

  414. a legacy.

  415. So the real question is what kind of

  416. legacy are we leaving?

  417. A legacy of faith or or a legacy of

  418. indifference

  419. because again influence doesn't stop

  420. with us. It doesn't stop with us.

  421. It continues

  422. long after I am gone from this world.

  423. The influence will still be there.

  424. That's why we got to guard it. That's

  425. why we got to be so careful.

  426. Let me bring the lesson to a close this

  427. morning.

  428. Some simple thoughts that I want to

  429. share with you

  430. as we close.

  431. When you think about the greatest gift a

  432. mother can give,

  433. you know, a lot of times you say, "Well,

  434. what did your mother what's the best

  435. gift your mother gave you?"

  436. You know, some people will automatically

  437. think materialistic things might have

  438. bought him a car or something, you know,

  439. whatever it might be.

  440. But I can say to this day

  441. that the greatest gift my mother gave me

  442. was faith.

  443. Faith that's lived out before.

  444. She showed me what it meant to be

  445. Christian.

  446. She showed me what it meant to go

  447. through hard times, but yet always rely

  448. on God,

  449. to trust in the Lord with all your

  450. heart. Lean not on your understanding.

  451. She taught my brother and I that.

  452. That's the greatest gift she ever gave

  453. me.

  454. now life. I'm glad to have life

  455. obviously, but the greatest gift she

  456. gave me is living out her faith in front

  457. of and that God and his word

  458. has always been the norm.

  459. Nothing ever took present over

  460. worshiping God ever.

  461. Nothing.

  462. And that means something to me.

  463. When I look for a spouse, do you know

  464. what I was looking for?

  465. Someone who had that same mindset.

  466. And I am blessed

  467. beyond measure

  468. because again, the greatest gift a

  469. mother can give is not success. It's not

  470. comfort. It's not even protection.

  471. In the physical and secular sense, it is

  472. faith in God.

  473. A faith that says God comes first. His

  474. word is truth. Heaven is the goal.

  475. That's the greatest gift.

  476. So, let's bring this home to everyone

  477. this morning.

  478. This lesson is again as I stated it's

  479. not just for mothers

  480. because every one of us must ask the

  481. question what kind of faith am I living?

  482. Is it genuine? Is it visible? Is it

  483. influencing others toward God?

  484. I'm asking is do you have a faith that's

  485. shaping generations?

  486. That's the design of God.

  487. all the way from Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  488. He's saying that's what's important.

  489. That's number one.

  490. Perhaps today you are thankful for a

  491. mother who taught you the truth. Honor

  492. her. Not just with words. But how do you

  493. do that? By living that faith in God out

  494. daily.

  495. Perhaps you recognize your life is not

  496. where it needs to be.

  497. The greatest way to honor godly

  498. influence is to respond to God's will.

  499. The gospel is simple, friends. You

  500. believe that Jesus Christ is the son of

  501. living God.

  502. If you believe that, repent of your

  503. sins. Confess him to be the son of

  504. living God as Romans 10:es 9 and 10

  505. says, and be baptized for the remission

  506. of your sins. Acts 2:38 to be buried

    Acts 2:38

  507. with him in baptism to rise and walk in

  508. newness of life as Romans chapter 6 and

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  509. verses 3 and 4 says and you come out of

  510. that watery grave to live faithfully.

  511. Live faithfully

  512. because in doing so that's the way we

  513. honor God ultimately. Obviously,

  514. we honor him because he gave us,

  515. his revealed word,

  516. his life, his son Jesus
