  1. this morning share with you that there

  2. are a few things more terrifying

  3. in scripture than people who think they

  4. are close to God while God says they are

  5. far from him.

  6. If you have been endeavoring in our

  7. yearly Bible study uh reading plan, just

  8. recently I was reminded of this very

  9. issue when reading from the Old

  10. Testament book of Isaiah chapter 58.

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  11. That will be our text this morning. So

  12. I'd encourage you to go to Isaiah

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  13. chapter 58 in your Bibles. Isaiah

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  14. chapter 58 as we go through this passage

  15. together.

  16. As one reads that chapter, we come to

  17. realize that it was not written to

  18. atheists.

  19. It wasn't written to pagans either.

  20. Friends, Isaiah 58 was written to

  21. worshippers. Uh they were people who

  22. still prayed. They still fasted. They

  23. still assembled. They still performed

  24. religious acts. Uh they still claimed to

  25. seek God daily. Yet heaven was silent.

  26. And and perhaps the greatest tragedy, as

  27. we'll find in Isaiah chapter 58, is not

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  28. that the people abandoned religion. The

  29. tragedy is that they kept religion while

  30. abandoning God.

  31. And we will spend this morning

  32. considering what I thought was a fitting

  33. title for the lesson, being bowed heads

  34. and distant hearts.

  35. Because what we'll find is that they

  36. knew how to perform worship,

  37. but without possessing surrender.

  38. They knew how to look humble

  39. without truly being broken before the

  40. Lord.

  41. Their hands were still carrying out

  42. religious practices,

  43. but their hearts no longer burned for

  44. God.

  45. And history has a way of repeating

  46. itself.

  47. Throughout the Old Testament, God

  48. repeatedly called his people back to

  49. him. We we've noted that in any time of

  50. study in the Old Testament, we see that

  51. back and forth, don't we? Uh one

  52. generation would uh faithfully walk with

  53. the Lord, but then another generation

  54. would would rise to slowly drift away

  55. into spiritual complacency. One of the

  56. passages that's quite familiar I believe

  57. is James 2 and verse 10 from the Old

  58. Testament Judges chapter 2 and verse 10.

    Judges 2 chapter mention

  59. In Judges 2 and verse 10 says, "When all

  60. that generation have been gathered to

  61. their fathers, another generation arose

  62. after them who did not know the Lord nor

  63. the work which he had done for Israel."

  64. That that is a huge statement there. And

  65. brethren, we must recognize that the

  66. danger still exists today.

  67. We are living in a culture

  68. filled with religious activities

  69. but starving for genuine devotion.

  70. The questions that we are confronted

  71. with today are are really the same as

  72. back then. Okay. Uh have we come to know

  73. how to attend worship without truly

  74. worshiping?

  75. Have we come to know how to sing songs

  76. while our hearts remain distracted?

  77. Have we come to know how to say the

  78. right things while resisting genuine

  79. surrender?

  80. In Isaiah 58 confronts us with a

  81. difficult question and that question is

  82. simply this. Have we preserved the form

  83. of rel religion while losing the heart

  84. of it?

  85. God told Isaiah in verse in verse one of

  86. Isaiah 58, "Cry aloud, spare not. Lift

  87. up your voice like a trumpet. Tell my

  88. people their transgression and the house

  89. of Jacob their sins."

  90. Think about that. This message was meant

  91. to awaken people who had become

  92. spiritually comfortable.

  93. And perhaps we need that same message,

  94. that same awakening today.

  95. Read on in verses 2 through five of our

  96. text

  97. says, "Yet they seek me daily and

  98. delight to know my ways as a nation that

  99. did righteousness and did not forsake

  100. the ordinance of their God. They ask of

  101. me the ordinances of justice. They take

  102. delight in approaching God. Why have Why

  103. have we fasted, they say, and you have

  104. not seen? Why have we afflicted our

  105. souls, and you take no notice? In fact,

  106. the day of our of your fast, you did

  107. find pleasure and exploit all your

  108. laborers. Indeed, you fast for strife

  109. and debate, and to strike with a fist of

  110. wickedness. You will not fast as you do

  111. this day, to make your voice heard on

  112. high. Is it a fast that have the eye

  113. have chosen a day for a man to afflict

  114. his soul? Is it to bow down his head

  115. like a borish and and to spread out

  116. sackcloth and ashes? Would you call this

  117. a fast and and an acceptable day to the

  118. Lord? Let's talk about that for a

  119. moment. Bowed heads. That's that's kind

  120. of how I cate categorize that in those

  121. first few verses there. uh because as we

  122. noted in the chapter how did it open

  123. right verse one God commanding Isaiah

  124. you cry aloud spare not lift up your

  125. voice like a trumpet okay uh why such

  126. strong language

  127. because the most dangerous spiritual

  128. condition is friends it's not open

  129. wickedness

  130. it's not open wickedness it's

  131. selfdeceived religion

  132. it's believing that we are close to God

  133. while our hearts remain far from him.

  134. What did verse two say? I'll back up

  135. just a moment. Verse two, yet they seek

  136. me. How often does it say? They seek me

  137. daily

  138. and delight to know my ways. Well, you

  139. know, at first glance, uh, these people

  140. appear deeply devoted. I mean, when you

  141. read that, like these guys have it.

  142. They sought God daily. They delighted to

  143. know his ways. They fasted. They humbled

  144. themselves outwardly.

  145. But something was terribly wrong. What

  146. was it? Verse three, what's it say? The

  147. frustration. What? It reveals it here.

  148. Verse three. Why have we fasted? That's

  149. what they're saying. Why have we fasted

  150. and you have not seen? Y'all see that?

  151. Uhoh.

  152. They're frustrated because, in other

  153. words, Lord, why are you not responding

  154. to our worship? And God answers them

  155. because outward worship had replaced

  156. inward surrender.

  157. They wanted God's blessings without

  158. God's lordship.

  159. They verse three says they pursued their

  160. own pleasure. Verse four, what's it say?

  161. They oppressed others and stirred up

  162. strife.

  163. So here it is. They fasted with our

  164. mouths

  165. while sinning with their lives. Did

  166. y'all see that? They lifted prayers

  167. toward heaven while mistreating people

  168. on earth.

  169. Their worship looked sincere externally,

  170. but inwardly their hearts were distant

  171. from God. Look at verse five. What God

  172. asked,

  173. "Is it a fast that I have chosen?" Oh,

  174. here here's the question. Was God

  175. impressed me by bowed heads?

  176. Was he? Well, I think we see clearly he

  177. wasn't. Was he interested only in an

  178. outward displays of humility?

  179. And the obvious answer to those

  180. questions are no.

  181. God has never desired

  182. ritual

  183. detached from transformed hearts.

  184. This same spirit actually appeared in

  185. the days of Jesus. Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  186. Matthew chapter 15. And look there in

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  187. verses 7-9. Matthew 15 7-9.

  188. Hypocrites. Well, did Isaiah prophesy

  189. about you, saying, "These people draw

  190. near to me with their mouth and honor me

  191. with their lips, but their heart is far

  192. from me. And in vain they worship me,

  193. teaching as doctrines the commandments

  194. of men." You see, if you back up and

  195. you'll even see there's a lot that said

  196. in the Gospel of Matthew regarding the

  197. Pharisees, the scribes, the chief

  198. priests, and you know, Jesus on the in

  199. the sermon on the mount, Matthew 5

  200. through chapter 7, he takes some time to

  201. speak on some issues. Well, just like he

  202. is in Matthew chapter 15 regarding them

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  203. being hypocrites. Again, these were

  204. religious leaders that he's talking

  205. about. You back up to Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  206. What were they doing? What did Jesus

  207. say? And when you pray, you shall not be

  208. like the hypocrites. For they love to

  209. pray standing where? In the synagogues

  210. and on the corners of the streets that

  211. they may be seen by men. Assuredly I say

  212. to you, they have the reward. So Jesus

  213. is taking it right here to the point in

  214. Matthew 6:5 is that here they are

    Matthew 6:5

  215. religious leaders. Yeah, they prayed

  216. publicly

  217. but again he called them hypocrites

  218. because of again what was the heart

  219. behind it? What what was the motive

  220. behind it? Well, then you go on down to

  221. verse 16.

  222. Moreover, when you fast, do not be like

  223. the hypocrites with a sad countenance,

  224. for they disfigure their faces that they

  225. may, key word, appear to men to be

  226. fasting, assuredly I say to you, they

  227. have their reward.

  228. So, publicly they prayed, they fasted

  229. visibly, right? all this external stuff

  230. going on that's outward and and what

  231. Jesus would make clear in these passages

  232. is that they appeared righteous

  233. outwardly

  234. and yet even when you go to chapter 23

  235. where all the the pronouncing of woes

  236. that were given

  237. woe to you verse 27-28 prime example

  238. here scribes and Pharisees hypocrites

  239. for you are like whitewashed tombs which

  240. indeed appear appear beautiful

  241. outwardly, but inside are full of dead

  242. men's bones and all uncleanness. Even

  243. so, you also outwardly appear righteous

  244. to men, but inside you are full of

  245. hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  246. When you take all of these patches,

  247. we're talking about Matthew chapter 6 or

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  248. Matthew chapter 15 or Matthew 23. All of

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  249. these are what Jesus is specifically

  250. saying here about the religious leaders,

  251. the scribes, the chief priests, them

  252. outward religion without inward

  253. surrender has always offended God.

  254. Always.

  255. Always. And that danger still exists

  256. today.

  257. It still exists that it's possible to

  258. know scripture and not know God.

  259. possible.

  260. It's possible to defend truth and not

  261. love truth.

  262. It's possible to worship and never truly

  263. worship.

  264. And I know that sounds weird when you

  265. say it out like that, but that's exactly

  266. what happens in the scriptures

  267. all the time.

  268. Paul gave this warning to Timothy.

  269. Paul warned about people in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  270. chapter 3. Second Timothy chapter 3

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  271. again, prove all things according to

  272. God's word, not DJ. But second Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  273. chapter 3, look at verses 2 through

  274. five.

  275. He says, "For men will be be lovers of

  276. themselves,

  277. lovers of money, boasters, proud,

  278. blasphemers, disobedient to parents,

  279. unthankful, unholy, unloving,

  280. unforgiving, slanderers, without

  281. self-control,

  282. brutal, despisers of good, traitors,

  283. headstrong, hotty, lovers of pleasure

  284. rather than lovers of God." Look at

  285. verse five.

  286. having a form of godliness

  287. but denying its power and from such

  288. people turn away.

  289. Friends,

  290. for someone to say, I have belief

  291. without transformation, orthodoxy

  292. without transformation is still

  293. spiritual deadness. stealing.

  294. It is possible to bow our heads

  295. while our hearts remain far, far away

  296. from God.

  297. And Isaiah 58 reminds us that God sees

  298. beyond such. He sees beyond appearances

  299. because what is he looking at? Just like

  300. just as we see in in the days of Samuel,

  301. right? The Lord is looking at the heart.

  302. You know, see, we we we kind of we kind

  303. of look at the outward stuff, don't we?

  304. But where did Jesus even point all of

  305. this to?

  306. By their fruits, you shall know them.

  307. It's not about the foliage and all the

  308. other things, right? Well, that looks he

  309. looks healthy. No, it's about what it

  310. produces.

  311. That's Jesus talking about the fruit of

  312. the tree. By their fruit, you shall know

  313. them.

  314. So

  315. the heart of the matter is where it is

  316. pointing to yet again. I want us to go

  317. on in Isaiah 58 6-12. Let's read that

  318. together. Isaiah 58:es 6-12. Let's read

  319. together. Is this not the fast that I

  320. have chosen to loose the bonds of

  321. wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens,

  322. to let the oppressed go free, and that

  323. you break every yoke? Is it not to share

  324. your bread with the hungry and that you

  325. bring to your house the poor who are

  326. cast out? When you when you see the

  327. naked that you cover him and not hide

  328. yourself from your own flesh, then your

  329. your light shall break forth like the

  330. morning. Your healing shall spring forth

  331. speedily and your righteousness shall go

  332. before you. The glory of the Lord shall

  333. be your rear guard. Then you shall call

  334. and the Lord will answer. You shall cry

  335. and he will say, "Here I am." If you

  336. take away the yoke from your midst, the

  337. pointing of the finger, and speaking

  338. wickedness, if you extend your soul to

  339. the hungry and satisfy the afflicted

  340. soul, then your light shall dawn in the

  341. darkness, and your darkness shall be as

  342. the noon day. The Lord will guide you

  343. continually and satisfy your soul in

  344. drought and strengthen your bones. You

  345. shall be like a watered garden and like

  346. a spring of water whose waters do not

  347. fill. Those from among you shall build

  348. the old waste places. You shall raise up

  349. the foundations of many generations. And

  350. you shall be called the repairer of the

  351. breach, the restorer of streets to dwell

  352. in.

  353. As we continue in this text, having

  354. talked about bowed hearts or bow bowed

  355. heads, we're going to distant hearts.

  356. When you look at verse six,

  357. God reveals the kind of worship he

  358. actually desires.

  359. True worship is not proven merely by

  360. what happens in the assembly.

  361. Um it's proven by what kind of person

  362. leaves the assembly.

  363. You understand that? What that means?

  364. that God says, "Loose the bonds of

  365. wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, let

  366. the oppressed go free." And it's

  367. interesting the way this is worded that

  368. that the people, it seems, wanted

  369. spiritual experiences while refusing

  370. spiritual transformation.

  371. But worship that truly reaches the heart

  372. changes the life.

  373. Worship that does not soften the heart

  374. has not reached the heart. God wanted

  375. his people to reflect his character in

  376. the way they treated others. Do you see

  377. that?

  378. Verse seven even says, "Is it not to

  379. share your bread with the hungry?" True

  380. worship produces compassion. True

  381. worship produces mercy. True worship

  382. produces how we speak, how we act, how

  383. we conduct ourselves, how we treat

  384. others

  385. because God cared more uh you know cared

  386. about more than what happened in the

  387. temple. Yes, that was significant.

  388. That's important what they did in the

  389. temple. No doubt.

  390. But he cared also

  391. about what happened in their homes,

  392. about what happened in their

  393. conversations, about what happened in

  394. their business dealings, what about

  395. happen in their relationships. And I

  396. could go on and on and on.

  397. Because friends, when we're talking

  398. about living a life that's pleasing to

  399. God,

  400. worship that never leaves the assembly

  401. has not yet reached the heart.

  402. There's got to be meaning and

  403. significance behind what we do when we

  404. claim God

  405. the creator of all that he is our father

  406. who is in heaven.

  407. Look at James in James chapter 1 verses

    James 1:26

  408. 26 and 27.

  409. James 1 verses 26 and 27.

    James 1:26

  410. If anyone among you thinks he is

  411. religious and does not bridles bridle

  412. his tongue

  413. but deceives his own heart, this one's

  414. religion is useless.

  415. Pure and undefiled religion before God

  416. and the father is this, to visit orphan

  417. and widows in their trouble and to keep

  418. oneself unspotted from the world. You

  419. know, you know, and even what the Lord

  420. through Isaiah is telling

  421. the people

  422. has this ring to it from Matthew chapter

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  423. 25,

  424. doesn't it? About Jesus

  425. making a a huge point,

  426. Matthew chapter 25

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  427. about their dayto-day basically

  428. activities.

  429. Matthew 25,

  430. he talks about the and I'm just going to

  431. jump right into verse 37. You know, then

  432. the righteous will answer him saying,

  433. "Lord, when did we see you hungry and

  434. feed you or thirsty and give you drink?

  435. When did we see you a stranger or take

  436. you in naked and clothe you? Or when

  437. when did we see you sick or imprisoning

  438. or and come to you?" And then the king

  439. will answer and say to him, "Surely I

  440. say to you, in as much as you did it to

  441. one of the least of these, my brethren,

  442. you did it to me." You see, that has a

  443. has a familiar ring to it from Isaiah

  444. 58. in here in Matthew chapter 25 and

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  445. even James chapter 1. It's very

    James 1 chapter mention

  446. interesting that we see these

  447. connections in the scriptures, don't we?

  448. And not just there, but we also see it

  449. in Luke chapter 10. Luke chapter 10 is a

Luke 10 chapter mention Luke 10 chapter mention

  450. prime uh example of this what Jesus was

  451. talking about in the parable of the good

  452. Samaritan. Parable of the good

  453. Samaritan. We we're uh we we think about

  454. what Jesus was was telling them and

  455. answering a question. and a certain

  456. lawyer that stood up was testing Jesus

  457. and says, "Teacher, what shall I do to

  458. inherit eternal life?"

  459. And Jesus made a he said a parable here

  460. there in beginning in verse 30 on down

  461. about this certain man who went down

  462. from Jerusalem to Jericho, fell among

  463. thieves who stripped him of his

  464. clothing, wounded him, and departed

  465. leaving him half dead. And then he uses

  466. this example here. He said a certain

  467. priest came down that road and when they

  468. and when he saw him he passed by on the

  469. other side. Then he talks about a

  470. Levite. Now again this is putting the

  471. religious aspect here right? Okay. When

  472. he arrived at the place came and looked

  473. and passed by on the other side but then

  474. the Jews of course they didn't

  475. particularly like the Samaritans.

  476. Remember that. Okay. Samaritans this

  477. group of Samaritans. A certain Samaritan

  478. as he journeyed came where he was and

  479. when he saw him he had compassion. And

  480. he goes on and it says that he bandaged

  481. his wounds. He poured on oil and wine

  482. set him on his own animal brought him to

  483. an end and took care of him. On the next

  484. day when he departed he took out two

  485. dinari gave him to the inkeeper and said

  486. to him take care of him and whatever

  487. more you spend when I come again I will

  488. repay you. So which of these three do

  489. you think was neighbor to him who fell

  490. among the thieves? And he said he who

  491. showed mercy on him. Then Jesus says,

  492. "Go and do likewise."

  493. What Jesus was doing and all throughout

  494. these passages, and again, I I'm hoping

  495. that that you're seeing these

  496. connections here as I'm going through

  497. these. What Jesus was doing here even in

  498. Luke was illustrating the same truth.

  499. The same truth

  500. that the question is not merely who's my

  501. neighbor. The question is, am I becoming

  502. like Christ toward others?

  503. Because we can sing all the songs that

  504. talk about love, right? Especially

  505. regarding our love for God, our love for

  506. Jesus, while failing to love people made

  507. in his image.

  508. John wrote this in 1 John 4 and:es 20

  509. and 21. 1 John 4 20 and 21. If someone

  510. says, "I love God," and hates his

  511. brother, he is a liar. For he who does

  512. not love his brother whom he has seen,

  513. how can he love God whom he has not

  514. seen? Verse 21. And this commandment we

  515. have from him that he who loves God must

  516. love his brother also. Also, it doesn't

  517. say you can if you want to. No, it says

  518. must.

  519. M must.

  520. Now, this is exactly and all that we're

  521. talking about here. This is exactly

  522. the contradiction Isaiah 58 exposes

  523. that Isaiah 58 is basically describing

  524. practical atheist.

  525. Think about that

  526. because it's more than attendance. God

  527. desires resemblance.

  528. Notice the promises in verses 8-2.

  529. I'll back it up again real quickly. I

  530. didn't put my charts in the order I

  531. wanted to, but verses 8-2.

  532. Then your light shall break forth like

  533. the morning. Y'all see when we think

  534. about what produces darkness. Well, I

  535. think it's clear dead religion produces

  536. darkness.

  537. Genuine surrender produces light.

  538. Matthew chapter 5 and verse 16, what's

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  539. it say? Let your light so shine before

  540. men that they may see your good works

  541. and glorify your father in heaven. When

  542. hearts truly belong to God,

  543. righteousness begins radiating outward

  544. into every area of one's life. Verse 11

  545. of our text of Isaiah 58, you shall be

  546. like a watered garden and like a spring

  547. of water. those whose waters do not

  548. fail.

  549. God says his people are meant to become

  550. refreshment to the world around them.

  551. Not spreading bitterness and not

  552. spreading division, but spreading grace,

  553. truth, compassion, and hope.

  554. I started not too long ago, we were we

  555. were looking at the difference between

  556. reservoirs and rivers. Y'all might

  557. remember that.

  558. And one of the passages we used was John

  559. 7 and verse 38.

  560. He who believes in me, Jesus said, as

  561. the scripture has said, out of his heart

  562. will flow rivers of living water.

  563. When we talk about a life that is

  564. dedicated and devoted to God, when our

  565. worship is genuine itself, it overflows.

  566. You know, you probably heard this from

  567. time to time. Even when I was growing

  568. up, I heard the I heard the preacher

  569. say, "Don't leave

  570. what you have done here

  571. at the threshold of the door." I

  572. remember that. And that's still true

  573. today.

  574. All that we learn, all that we we do

  575. here, we praise God.

  576. We encourage one another.

  577. We remember Christ

  578. and crucified for our sins.

  579. And we go out to glorify God even when

  580. we leave here

  581. daily

  582. because that is what changes homes. It's

  583. what changes marriages. It changes

  584. church. It changes generations.

  585. Generations. Did y'all notice that in

  586. verse 12 of our text, Isaiah 58, what

  587. y'all notice there? You shall raise up

  588. the foundations of many generations.

  589. Generations.

  590. I'm asking about our generations that's

  591. coming up. Do we see of what we are

  592. doing today raising up the foundations

  593. of generations to come?

  594. Think about that.

  595. That's important, isn't it?

  596. Because one transformed life can

  597. influence generations.

  598. Didn't we talk about that last Sunday

  599. with Lois, Ununas, and Timothy?

  600. See, it wasn't just about those three.

  601. Lois and Ununas. They they weren't just

  602. influencing Timothy.

  603. They were influencing other people

  604. obviously in their lives. But we have

  605. that snippet, if you will, of what they

  606. were doing with Timothy to teach him and

  607. to guide him. And it wasn't just words.

  608. I'm pretty assure of that. It wasn't

  609. just words that they shared with Timothy

  610. saying, "Oh, you know, Timothy, you

  611. know, you got to do this and you've got

  612. to do that and check this box and check

  613. that box." No, that's not what it was.

  614. They lived out a life that said they

  615. truly loved God

  616. and they glorified God. And Timothy saw

  617. that. And it wasn't a contradiction to

  618. what they did in an assembly.

  619. Y'all see the point I'm making?

  620. They weren't living out a life of

  621. practical atheist. I believe God, but my

  622. life doesn't reflect it.

  623. It's true.

  624. Timothy's life

  625. had a massive impact going forward and

  626. impacted

  627. generations. Generations.

  628. Yes, one transformed life can influence

  629. generations. But I'll tell you this,

  630. superficial religion cannot rebuild

  631. ruined places.

  632. won't happen. Never has and never will.

  633. And that's gospel. That's truth. That's

  634. Bible.

  635. Only surrendered hearts can do that.

  636. Last two verses of our text before we

  637. close the lesson, verses 13 and 14. Look

  638. at it with me. If you turn away your

  639. foot from the Sabbath, from doing your

  640. pleasure on my holy day, and call the

  641. Sabbath the delight, the holy day of the

  642. Lord honorable, and shall honor him, not

  643. doing your own ways, nor finding your

  644. own pleasure, nor speaking your own

  645. words, then you shall delight yourself

  646. in the Lord. And I will cause you to

  647. ride hi ride on the high hills of the

  648. earth, and feed you with the heritage of

  649. Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord

  650. has spoken.

  651. The passage ends and this is the

  652. direction that we find. The direction is

  653. when worship becomes to light.

  654. Now as we think about the old law and

  655. which talks about the Sabbath, right?

  656. The old law had to do with the Sabbath.

  657. And the final section really centers on

  658. that. While while Christians again today

  659. under the new covenant that we have,

  660. we're not under the old test old

  661. testament Sabbath law. And again, I gave

  662. reference in the notes of Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  663. chapter 2 that speaks speaks of this in

  664. verses 14-1 17 about having wiped out

  665. the handwriting of requirements that was

  666. against us which was contrary to us. And

  667. he has taken it out of the way, having

  668. nailed it to the cross, having disarmed

  669. principalities and powers. He made a

  670. public spectacle of them, triumphing

  671. over them in it. So let no one judge you

  672. in food or in drink or regarding a

  673. festival or new new moon or Sabbath

  674. which are a shadow of things to come but

  675. the substances of Christ.

  676. See that's what that was. Shadows. Y'all

  677. remember that series don't you?

  678. The principle though that that's being

  679. pointed out in this last two verses

  680. remains unmistakable. God desires

  681. worship that flows from delight rather

  682. than mere obligation. This is not a

  683. checkbox thing. It's not. Verse 13 says,

  684. "Call the Sabbath a delight."

  685. The issue was not merely Sabbath

  686. observance. The issue was what they

  687. loved.

  688. God was not merely looking for people

  689. who made time for him. He wanted people

  690. who actually treasured it. Israel viewed

  691. worship as something to endure so they

  692. could return to their own pleasures.

  693. Think about that.

  694. And sadly, that same spirit still exists

  695. today. Many approach worship saying,

  696. "How quickly will this be over?" Right?

  697. How how quickly?

  698. rather than how closely can I draw to my

  699. God

  700. who created all things.

  701. Some endure worship rather than delight

  702. in worship. That's what they did in the

  703. days of old. And but a heart that that

  704. delights

  705. in God never views opportunities like

  706. this right here. And even this evening

  707. and even the time that we spent on

  708. Wednesday, we don't see that as wasted

  709. time. We don't see that.

  710. Friends, I want to submit to you, your

  711. influence

  712. is helping my kids grow in the Lord.

  713. It's helping my kids,

  714. and I appreciate that.

  715. That's important to me and I've said

  716. that numerous times over the years that

  717. I've been here. I think this is the

  718. eighth year I've been here and y'all

  719. heard that statement before and we've

  720. added a kid since then obviously, right?

  721. But it goes far beyond what we do here.

  722. It's important that you're here because

  723. my kids notice when you're not.

  724. You know, they ask me, "Hey, where's so

  725. and so? Have you seen him?" It's a good

  726. question. Maybe we need to send them a

  727. card.

  728. You don't think my kids notice things?

  729. They wonder, "Is it not important to

  730. them?"

  731. Let that settle for a second.

  732. There are generations that are coming up

  733. and I don't want them having conflicting

  734. information either.

  735. I don't want I don't I don't want that.

  736. I want them to know the importance of

  737. delighting in the time that we have to

  738. spend

  739. together to encourage

  740. to be edified to be built up.

  741. I think about what David declared. I was

  742. glad when they said to me, "Let us go

  743. into the house of the Lord."

  744. Did we say that this morning? We got

  745. ready for Bible study this morning. I

  746. was glad

  747. we're coming to study God's word, right?

  748. I was glad to come and worship God

  749. because if that's not really the delight

  750. that we have, then there's a problem.

  751. We're actually practical atheists.

  752. I know that sounds hard.

  753. But is that not what Isaiah 58's talking

  754. about?

  755. Because friends, the tragedy is not

  756. merely that people stop loving worship.

  757. The tragedy is that they stopped loving

  758. the God worship was meant to draw them

  759. forward.

  760. God wanted his people to find joy in

  761. him. Not empty routine, not cold

  762. formalism, not mechanical religion. He

  763. wanted surrendered hearts. And friends,

  764. what Matthew 6 verse 21 says, "For where

    Matthew 6:21

  765. your treasure is, there your heart will

  766. be." Also, let me tell you what Jesus

  767. makes abundantly clear. What we treasure

  768. shapes our hearts. And when God becomes

  769. our delight, worship ceases to be a

  770. burden.

  771. Prayer becomes communion. Singing

  772. becomes praise. Bible study becomes

  773. nourishment. The Lord's supper becomes

  774. heartfelt remembrance. They these are no

  775. longer mere just religious actions.

  776. They become encounters with the living

  777. God. And this extends beyond the

  778. building where we assemble. As mentioned

  779. earlier, it goes into every aspect of

  780. our lives.

  781. So I I bring this lesson to a close,

  782. friends, to tell you Isaiah 58 is a

  783. mirror. If you didn't see that already,

  784. I'm telling you, it's a mirror.

  785. It forces us to ask difficult questions.

  786. Have we bowed our heads while allowing

  787. our hearts to become distant from God?

  788. Have we preserved outward religion while

  789. neglecting inward devotion?

  790. Have we mastered

  791. worship forms while losing reverence and

  792. surrender?

  793. Jesus said, "God is spirit, and those

  794. who worship him must worship in spirit

  795. and truth." John 4:24. Perhaps the

    John 4:24

  796. greatest lesson of Isaiah 58 is this.

  797. What we do with God was never meant to

  798. end at the building doors.

  799. The people of Isaiah's day believed that

  800. if they bowed their heads during sacred

  801. moments,

  802. God would ignore how they lived after.

  803. But God showed them

  804. that such is not confined to moments.

  805. True worship changes the heart and

  806. transformed hearts change the way we

  807. actually live.

  808. Worship

  809. is about surrender ourselves.

  810. Friends, it's not just merely bowing the

  811. head. It's bowing the will.

  812. And there's more to what happens during

  813. our Sunday services and such. Yes, it's

  814. important we what we do here today. It's

  815. important that we do everything in

  816. accordance with the New Testament

  817. scripture and authority.

  818. But also equally important, it also it's

  819. important what happens Monday morning.

  820. It's seen in how we treat people. It's

  821. seen in how we speak to our families.

  822. It's seen how we conduct ourselves at

  823. work. It's seen how we respond when we

  824. are wronged. It's seen. It is seen how

  825. we carry Christ out into the world

  826. because worship that honors God in the

  827. assembly but dishonors him in daily

  828. living is inconsistent with what God

  829. desires.

  830. And Isaiah 58 reminds us that God does

  831. not simply listen to songs. He watches

  832. hearts and he watches lives.

  833. And what God desires is a devoted heart

  834. that goes with us out of the pews and

  835. into the world.

  836. Paul would later write in Romans 12

    Romans 12:1

  837. verses 1 and two, I beseech you

  838. therefore, brethren, by the mercies of

  839. God that you present your bodies a

  840. living sacrifice, holy accept to God

  841. which is your reasonable service. and do

  842. not be conformed to this world, but be

  843. transformed by the renewing of your mind

  844. that you may prove what is that good and

  845. acceptable the perfect will of God.

  846. So friends, the great question Isaiah 58

  847. leaves us with, when the singing ends,

  848. when the prayers conclude,

  849. when the assembly dismisses,

  850. will the lives that exclaim glory,

  851. honor, and praise here continue beyond

  852. the threshold of a doorway?

  853. Or will God see bowed heads and distant

  854. hearts?

  855. Perhaps this morning there is one that

  856. realizes that outward religion has

  857. replaced inward devotion.

  858. Maybe worship has become mechanical.

  859. Maybe prayer has been something routine.

  860. May maybe hearts have drifted while

  861. attendance yes remained.

  862. But God still calls people back to him.

  863. He still desires as our scripture

  864. reading this morning that was read by

  865. brother Aiden Mosley. He still desires

  866. hearts that what what's it say in verse

  867. two? But on this one will look on him

  868. who is poor and of a contrite spirit and

  869. who trembles

  870. at my word.

  871. And if you will humble yourself

  872. sincerely before him, God will still

  873. revive his people.

  874. Because God does not merely want a place

  875. somewhere in our lives.

  876. He demands the throne. He demands the

  877. throne.

  878. Thank you again for your kind attention

  879. this morning and this lesson

  880. that has served as a good reminder to

  881. myself and I hopefully to you also.

  882. jumping on the body of Christ in

  883. baptism, submit your life to him. Submit

  884. your life to his will because it says

  885. that buried with Christ in baptism to

  886. rise and walk in newness of life. You're

  887. giving your life over to him that he is

  888. the Lord of Lords, King of Kings, your

  889. life. Repent of your sins, confess him,

  890. and be baptized. We help you with that

  891. this morning. We'd love to help you.

  892. You'd love to want to study with us

  893. about that. Let us know. Don't leave

  894. here without saying, "I need to talk to

  895. you more about God's plan of salvation."

  896. Or as a disciple of Christ, something

  897. that's a miss in your life. Maybe

  898. there's a spiritual need that you have

  899. that's lingering. Something that this

  900. lesson has even brought forth and you

  901. can respond to that and we'll be have

  902. prayers on your behalf, prayers for

  903. strength, whatever that case may be.

  904. Friends,

  905. whatever your spiritual need, won't you

  906. come as we stand as we sing the song

  907. that's been selected?
