  1. Tomorrow, [clears throat] many across

  2. our nation will observe Memorial Day.

  3. Uh for some, it may be simply a day off

  4. from work, time with family, or the

  5. beginning of summer activities.

  6. But Memorial Day is intended to be much

  7. more than that. As we know, Memorial has

  8. that very meaning. It's a remembrance, a

  9. day of remembrance. It is a day when a

  10. nation pauses to remember those who gave

  11. their lives in service to others.

  12. Now the very idea behind Memorial Day is

  13. that sacrifice should not be forgotten.

  14. Freedom should not be taken for granted.

  15. Blessings enjoyed today may have been

  16. purchased through the suffering and

  17. sacrifice of others yesterday.

  18. And whether someone stands at a

  19. graveside or sees a flag that has been

  20. placed near a headstone or simply pauses

  21. in quiet reflection,

  22. the message is the same is for one to

  23. remember lest we forget.

  24. That thought ought to speak deeply to

  25. Christians

  26. because long before nations established

  27. days of remembrance, God taught his

  28. people the importance of memorials.

  29. Throughout scripture, God repeatedly

  30. gave his people reminders. He gave them

  31. feasts, stones, sacrifices, songs, and

  32. observances that were designed to keep

  33. spiritual truth before their eyes and

  34. upon their hearts.

  35. Why?

  36. Because God knows the human heart. Fact

  37. is, he created all mankind. He created

  38. all things. The fact of the matter, he

  39. knows that we are prone to forget.

  40. I want you to think about how this

  41. happens. Uh we may forget blessings

  42. once they become familiar.

  43. We may forget deliverance

  44. once the danger is behind us.

  45. We may forget mercy

  46. once life becomes comfortable.

  47. We may forget the cost

  48. once we begin enjoying the benefit.

  49. And perhaps most sobering of all, we may

  50. forget God

  51. while still going through religious

  52. motions.

  53. In our reading this morning that brother

  54. Aiden Mosley led us in from Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  55. chapter 8, you notice there right off in

  56. verse 11, I highlighted it here. Beware

  57. that you do not forget the Lord your

  58. God.

  59. That's a warning, isn't it? He goes on

  60. to say, by not keeping his commandments,

  61. his judgments, and his statutes, which I

  62. command you today. The the warning that

  63. warning was given as Israel prepared to

  64. enter a a land of abundance. They would

  65. eat and be full. They would build

  66. houses. their herds and flocks would

  67. multiply and their silver and gold would

  68. increase. And what Moses knew is he knew

  69. the danger, didn't he? He knew the

  70. danger

  71. that when life became comfortable,

  72. their hearts

  73. could be lifted up and they could forget

  74. the Lord who brought them out of

  75. bondage.

  76. I'm going to submit to you this morning

  77. that that warning is still needed. Still

  78. needed.

  79. It is possible to be blessed and forget

  80. the blesser.

  81. It's possible to be delivered and forget

  82. the deliverer.

  83. It's possible to be redeemed and yet

  84. grow cold toward the redeemer.

  85. So the Lord has given his people a

  86. memorial and and for Christians the

  87. greatest memorial is not a monument of

  88. stone uh not a national holiday and not

  89. a place marked on on a map. The greatest

  90. memorial given to us is the Lord's

  91. supper.

  92. On the night before his death, Jesus

  93. took bread and said, "Do this in

  94. remembrance of me.

  95. Jesus did not merely say do this when he

  96. speaks of the bread and he speaks of the

  97. cup

  98. again Matthew 26 as well as Luke 22 p

  99. the examples or that that which we find

  100. recorded for us uh in the scriptures of

  101. the institution of the Lord's supper

  102. again he didn't say just merely do this

  103. he said do this in remembrance of to me

  104. because the Lord's supper is not an

  105. empty ritual. Uh it's not a religious

  106. pause between songs and sermon.

  107. It's not something that we rush through

  108. because it appears every single week in

  109. the order of worship on the first day of

  110. the week. Friends, it's a sacred

  111. memorial.

  112. It's a proclamation. It's communion.

  113. It's a moment when the people of God

  114. gather around the table of the Lord and

  115. are brought back to Calvary.

  116. And and so today when with Memorial Day

  117. approaching, let us think about a

  118. greater remembrance. Let us think about

  119. the importance of truly remembering the

  120. Lord,

  121. about the significance of the Lord's

  122. supper,

  123. and reminded that a Christian who

  124. forgets Calvary

  125. will soon drift from devotion.

  126. As mentioned briefly there in the

  127. introduction, the first thing I would

  128. bring to you again is God's people need

  129. memorials because God's people can

  130. forget.

  131. From the beginning, God knew his people

  132. needed reminders. Uh I mean if you go

  133. back and you even think about when uh

  134. the Egyptian bondage right the Israel

  135. came out of their Egyptian captivity and

  136. God gave them the Passover.

  137. Exodus 12 and verse14 speaks of this in

  138. Exodus 12 and verse14 it says so this

  139. day shall be to you a what? Memorial.

  140. And it goes on to talk about, "And you

  141. shall keep it as a feast to the Lord

  142. throughout your generations. You shall

  143. keep it as a feast by an everlasting

  144. ordinance." So what they were doing,

  145. what was instituted in this part here

  146. after they came out of Egyptian

  147. captivity is that every year they were

  148. to remember the night God delivered them

  149. by blood, by power, and by mercy.

  150. They were to remember bondage. They were

  151. to remember judgment. They were to

  152. remember the blood of the lamb. remember

  153. that

  154. they were to remember that they were not

  155. a self-made people.

  156. They had been delivered by the mighty

  157. hand of God. And the Passover was not

  158. merely remembering a date in history.

  159. It was about remembering who they were

  160. because of what God had done.

  161. So later when Israel crossed the Jordan

  162. River, God told Joshua

  163. to take 12 stones from the riverbed and

  164. set them up as a memorial. Joshua 4

  165. records this. And I have before you

  166. there verses 6 and 7. Again, prove all

  167. things according to God's word, not

  168. mine. But Joshua 4:es 6 and 7 records

  169. this where where Joshua 4 says that when

  170. their children would ask

  171. that this may be a sign among you when

  172. your children ask in time to come saying

  173. what do these stones mean to you?

  174. The fathers were to tell them how the

  175. Lord stopped the waters on the Jordan

  176. and brought Israel across on dry ground.

  177. You see, those stones had no power in

  178. themselves, did they?

  179. They were just stones.

  180. That's all they were.

  181. But when connected to the word of God

  182. and the work of God, they became

  183. teachers.

  184. They preached silently to future

  185. generations

  186. because a child would ask the question,

  187. "Why are these stones here?"

  188. And a father would answer because God

  189. brought us through.

  190. Is that not what what memorials do?

  191. Memorials preserve meaning. They teach

  192. identity. They keep one generation from

  193. becoming detached from truth, sacrifice,

  194. and grace that shaped the people of God.

  195. And again, we need that today.

  196. Our children need to know why we

  197. worship.

  198. Not this is just what we do. This is

  199. what my great great grandfather did.

  200. This is just this is all we this is what

  201. we just this what we do.

  202. They need to know why we gather on the

  203. first day of the week. They need to know

  204. why we sing. They need to know why we

  205. pray. They need to know why we preach

  206. the gospel. They need to know why we

  207. partake of the Lord's supper every first

  208. day of the week. They need to know why

  209. in the very authority of the scriptures.

  210. They need to know more. Again, this is

  211. what we do. They need to hear this is

  212. what the Lord has done.

  213. This is what the Lord

  214. desires of his people.

  215. Because friends, there's a great

  216. difference between ritual and

  217. remembrance.

  218. There's a great difference between those

  219. two. Ritual can be performed by habit.

  220. That's a ritual.

  221. Remembrance is something that engages

  222. the heart.

  223. Ritual can continue while the mind

  224. wonders.

  225. Remembrance though on the other hand

  226. pulls the soul back to truth.

  227. Ritual may preserve an outward form

  228. but remembrance preserves inward

  229. devotion.

  230. As mentioned earlier, God did not give

  231. memorials because he had forgotten what

  232. he had done.

  233. He gave morals because his people were

  234. prone to forget.

  235. And the same is true of the greatest

  236. memorial that we have we have and that

  237. is the Lord's supper.

  238. Friends, the Lord's supper is not

  239. because God needs to be reminded of what

  240. happened on Calvary. It's because we do.

  241. Every Lord's day,

  242. God's people are called back to the

  243. cross.

  244. We are reminded that salvation was not

  245. cheap. Grace was not casual. Forgiveness

  246. was not offered without cost. Our

  247. freedom from sin was purchased by the

  248. body and the blood of Jesus Christ.

  249. And if we forget that,

  250. everything else begins to weaken.

  251. When we forget Calvary, worship is just

  252. a routine.

  253. When we forget Calvary, sin becomes

  254. easier to excuse.

  255. When we forget Calvary, gratitude begins

  256. to fade away.

  257. When we forget Calvary, the church

  258. becomes less precious.

  259. When we forget Calvary, the world

  260. becomes more attractive.

  261. Is that not what happened? The warning

  262. that was given in Deuteronomy chapter 8

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  263. to beware not beware lest they forget

  264. the Lord their God.

  265. What did that passage go on to say

  266. that when they had went and built houses

  267. and they were enriched,

  268. what does that tend to do?

  269. causes people to forget.

  270. The world around the Israelites became

  271. more attractive. Although they have

  272. escaped,

  273. they were delivered from Egyptian

  274. captivity

  275. and the oppression that they were under.

  276. Before long, they were looking back to

  277. the days of Egypt. They had forgotten

  278. about what that that life was about.

  279. It was terrible, but they longed for it

  280. because they had forgotten

  281. about God, his wondrous works.

  282. That's why the Lord says even today the

  283. institution of Lord's supper is do this

  284. in remembrance of me

  285. because the Lord's supper does this.

  286. Lord's supper calls us to remember his

  287. body.

  288. You go to 1 Corinthians chapter 11, you

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  289. see this passage actually up every time

  290. we partake of the Lord's supper.

  291. In addition, the men who stand here and

  292. and speak of the Lord's supper prior to

  293. our observance of it, they'll use other

  294. passages,

  295. wonderful, wonderful passages that they

  296. share that again

  297. tells us and reminds us about his body,

  298. his blood, why we do this, the

  299. importance of it. 1 Corinthians 11:es 23

  300. and 24. This is Paul saying here for I

  301. received from the Lord that which I also

  302. delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on

  303. the same night in which he was betrayed

  304. took bread and when he had given thanks,

  305. he broke it and said, "Take, eat. This

  306. is my body which is broken for you. Do

  307. this in remembrance of me." Sounds quite

  308. familiar from Matthew 26 as well as

  309. Luke, right? It sure does

  310. because that's where Paul is taking the

  311. Corinthian brethren. He takes them back

  312. to the night that Jesus was betrayed.

  313. And and I believe that's significant uh

  314. because the Lord's supper was not

  315. instituted in a peaceful moment free

  316. from trouble, right? That's that's not

  317. how that worked. Uh it was instituted on

  318. the night of betrayal. Judas would go

  319. out into darkness. Peter would soon deny

  320. him. The disciples would scatter.

  321. Gethsemane was near. The cross was

  322. coming. And in that solemn hour, Jesus

  323. took bread and gave it. Meaning he said,

  324. "This is my body."

  325. When we take the bread, we remember that

  326. the son of God came in flesh. It takes

  327. us right back to John 1 and verse 14.

  328. And the word became flesh and dwelt

  329. among us. And we beheld his glory, the

  330. glory as of the only begotten of the

  331. father, full of grace and truth. See,

  332. Jesus did not save us from a distance.

  333. He came near. He entered the world. He

  334. created. He took upon himself human

  335. weakness and hunger and weariness and

  336. sorrow and pain.

  337. And this bread, the bread reminds us

  338. that redemption was not abstract. It was

  339. bodily. It was real. The body of Jesus

  340. was given.

  341. He walked among men. He touched lepers.

  342. He wept at gravesides.

  343. He looked with compassion upon

  344. multitudes of people. He was tempted in

  345. all points as we are, yet without sin.

  346. And then that body was given over to

  347. suffering.

  348. His back was scorched.

  349. His brow was pierced with thorns.

  350. His face was struck. His hands and feet

  351. were nailed. His side was pierced.

  352. We must be careful that the cross does

  353. not become so familiar in language that

  354. it becomes distant from our hearts.

  355. Crucifixion was not gentle, friends.

  356. It was not sentimental. It was cruel. It

  357. was shameful. It was painful. It was

  358. public. And Jesus endured

  359. for us.

  360. Those two words should humble every

  361. single soul.

  362. For us.

  363. This is my body which is broken for you.

  364. Not for his own sin.

  365. He had none. Not because he deserved

  366. death. He did not. Not because man took

  367. his life against his will. He said in

  368. John 10 and verse 18, actually, "No one

  369. takes it from me, but I lay it down of

  370. myself. I have power to lay it down. I

  371. have power to take it again. This

  372. command I have received from my father.

  373. What's he saying? He's saying I give my

  374. body willingly. My body I give lovingly.

  375. I give my body sacrificious

  376. sacrificially.

  377. When I take the bread I must remember,

  378. we must all remember that our sins were

  379. not small.

  380. Our guilt was not imaginary.

  381. Our soul was not cheaply redeemed.

  382. The body of Jesus was given because sin

  383. is serious and God's love is great.

  384. The bread should humble us.

  385. Before I boast, I need to remember his

  386. body. Before I complain, I need to

  387. remember his body. Before I treat sin

  388. casually, I need to remember his body.

  389. Before I withhold forgiveness, I need to

  390. remember his body.

  391. Before I drift into indifference,

  392. I need to remember his body because that

  393. bread preaches every single first day of

  394. the week. It says, "This is what love

  395. gave. This is what sin cost. This is how

  396. far the Lord came to save us.

  397. And along those lines,

  398. we have the cup. The Lord's supper calls

  399. us to remember his blood.

  400. Says in verse 25 of 1 Corinthians 11, in

  401. the same manner, he also took the cup

  402. after supper, saying, "This cup is the

  403. new covenant in my blood. this do as

  404. often as you drink it in remembrance of

  405. me.

  406. The cup points our minds to the blood of

  407. Christ.

  408. Blood runs through the redemption story.

  409. In in Egypt, blood marked the houses of

  410. Israel, didn't it? Under the law of

  411. Moses, we find that blood was offered in

  412. sacrifice. The Hebrew writer speaks

  413. volumes on this. You go to Hebrews,

  414. you'll find much on this. Hebrews 9 and

  415. verse 22. I use this instance this

  416. morning. And according to the law almost

  417. all things are purified with blood and

  418. without shedding of blood there is no

  419. remission.

  420. Right there.

  421. But as the Hebrew writer would go on to

  422. say, the blood of bulls and goats

  423. could not permanently take away sin.

  424. Those sacrifices pointed forward and

  425. again they were shadows. They were

  426. reminders and they were preparing the

  427. way for the true lamb of God.

  428. And then Jesus came. John 1 verse 29.

    John 1:29

  429. This is John that saw Jesus and John the

  430. baptizer saw Jesus coming toward him and

  431. said, "Behold the lamb of God who takes

  432. away the sin of the world."

  433. Remember

  434. when Jesus instituted

  435. the Lord's supper, when he talked about

  436. the cup, what did he say about that cup?

  437. You go to uh notice what it said in

  438. verse 25 of Paul referencing back to

  439. Matthew 26 as well as Luke 22. This cup

  440. is the new covenant in my blood.

  441. That means the cup does not merely

  442. remind us that Jesus died.

  443. It reminds us that his death

  444. accomplished something.

  445. His blood purchased something. His blood

  446. established something.

  447. Consider with me what that means.

  448. His blood purchased the church.

  449. Acts 20 verse 28 says that. Therefore,

    Acts 20:28

  450. take heed to yourselves and to all the

  451. flock among which the Holy Spirit has

  452. made you overseers to shepherd the

  453. church of God which he purchased with

  454. his own blood. The church, not a

  455. building, right? The people,

  456. his blood brings forgiveness.

  457. Jesus in Matthew 26 and verse 28 says

  458. that for this is my blood of the new

  459. covenant which is shed for many for the

  460. remission of sins. His

  461. blood gives access to God. In Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  462. chapter 10 speaks of boldness, having

  463. boldness to enter the holiest by the

  464. blood of Jesus. His blood cleanses us.

  465. It reaches deeper than outward behavior.

  466. It reaches the strain, the the stain of

  467. guilt and and the burden of shame.

  468. And when we take the cup, we remember

  469. that sin required blood.

  470. That's a truth our world desperately

  471. needs. Friends,

  472. many want to minimize sin, excuse sin,

  473. redefine sin, ignore sin.

  474. But I'll tell you this, the cup will not

  475. allow us to treat sin lightly.

  476. Because the cup reminds us that sin is

  477. not some minor uh mistake needing a

  478. small adjustment.

  479. Sin is what separates man from God. As

  480. Isaiah 59:1 and2 speaks of sin brings

    Isaiah 59:1

  481. death. Sin required the blood of Christ.

  482. But the cup also reminds us that grace

  483. is greater than sin.

  484. Because the blood of Jesus does not

  485. merely tell us how guilty we were.

  486. It tells us how loved we are.

  487. God did not look at sin and say it

  488. doesn't matter.

  489. He looked at sin and he gave his son. At

  490. the cross, God's holiness and mercy met.

  491. Sin was judged. Love was displayed.

  492. Justice was satisfied.

  493. Grace was offered.

  494. And that's why we don't come to the

  495. table casually.

  496. We come gratefully.

  497. We don't come carelessly. We come

  498. reverently.

  499. We come remembering the blood that

  500. cleanses sin. And every Lord's day, the

  501. cup says to the Christian, "You were

  502. bought with a cross."

  503. And if we truly remember that,

  504. it will affect how we live.

  505. The Lord's Supper,

  506. I I want to talk about an important

  507. question that that needs to be asked is,

  508. you know, well, who partakes the Lord's

  509. supper? I've had that question asked

  510. many times in in my life.

  511. And the Lord's supper is for those who

  512. belong to the Lord.

  513. The answer to the very question who

  514. partakes of the Lord's supper is the

  515. very nature of the supper itself.

  516. It is the Lord's supper.

  517. So what that means is it belongs to him.

  518. It was instituted by him. It remembers

  519. him. It proclaims his death. It is a

  520. covenant memorial for those who are in a

  521. covenant relationship with him.

  522. It's not a common meal.

  523. It is not some kind of gener uh general

  524. religious snack. It's not something for

  525. anyone to take merely because they are

  526. present in an assembly. It is a

  527. spiritual communion for those who have

  528. come to Christ in obedient faith. And

  529. what that means is, as you see in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  530. chapter 2, those who were gathered there

  531. on the day of Pentecost, they heard the

  532. word of God proclaimed. They were cut to

  533. the heart. They said to Peter and the

  534. rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren,

  535. what shall we do?" And Peter said to

  536. them, "Repent and be baptized. Every one

  537. of you, be baptized in the name of Jesus

  538. Christ for the remission of sins, and

  539. you shall receive the gift of the Holy

  540. Spirit." As you go on through that text,

  541. you'll find that those who came out of

  542. that water grave of baptism to rise and

  543. walk in newness of life as Romans 6:3

    Romans 6:3

  544. and4 says, "Well, they gladly received

  545. his word baptized. And that day about

  546. 3,000 souls were added to them, and they

  547. continued steadfasting the apostles

  548. doctrine and fellowship and the breaking

  549. of bread and in prayers." And then you

  550. go on down to verse 47. And the Lord

  551. added to the church daily those being

  552. saved.

  553. Added added to the church. Shall notice

  554. that added

  555. the Lord added to the church. Well,

  556. that's how they became members of his

  557. body was because they were added to the

  558. Lord's church. The one that Jesus said

  559. in Matthew 16:18, "Upon this rock, I

    Matthew 16:18

  560. will build my church and the gates of

  561. hell shall not prevail against it."

  562. You got to notice the order here. They

  563. received the word. They were baptized.

  564. They were added. Then they continued

  565. steadfastly in the apostles doctrine,

  566. fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers.

  567. Y'all see?

  568. And again acts 20 and verse 7. Now on

  569. the first day of the week when the

  570. disciples came together to break bread

  571. who came together to break bread

  572. the disciples. And and again that's

  573. significant because the Lord's disciple

  574. the the Lord's supper is for disciples

  575. of the Lord. It's for Christians. Those

  576. who have believed the gospel who have

  577. repented of sin who have confessed

  578. Christ who are b who have been baptized

  579. into Christ. It's for those who have

  580. been redeemed by the blood. they are

  581. remembering.

  582. Now this does not mean Christians

  583. partake because they are worthy in

  584. themselves and think I am worthy of

  585. this. Christians come to the table

  586. because

  587. we belong to the Lord. It's for penitent

  588. people. It's for redeemed people. It's

  589. for covenant people.

  590. is for those who have been brought into

  591. Christ and who seek to walk with Christ.

  592. So friends, when we ask that question,

  593. one must come to Christ. I was just

  594. quoting there from Romans 6 3 and 4 that

  595. teaches that we are baptized in Christ

  596. Jesus. We're baptized into his death. We

  597. are buried with him through baptism into

  598. death and and raised to walk in of life.

  599. And so those who have been united, see

  600. those words, those who have been united

  601. with Christ in his death are the ones

  602. who gather each Lord's day to remember

  603. his death.

  604. So when we partake of the bread, it's

  605. not merely bread in the hands of

  606. religious people. It's memorial in the

  607. hands of the redeemed.

  608. When the cup is taken,

  609. it's not merely juice in a cup. It is

  610. the remembrance of blood by those who

  611. have been cleansed by that blood.

  612. The Lord's supper belongs to the Lord's

  613. people because it proclaims the Lord's

  614. death until he comes.

  615. Now, I want to make a note also and you

  616. go to 1 Corinthians chapter 11. Go back

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  617. to that passage there. What Paul says

  618. regarding those who are partaking of the

  619. Lord's supper in verses 27 down through

  620. verse 29. It says, "Therefore, whoever

  621. eats this bread or drinks this cup of

  622. the Lord in an unworthy manner will be

  623. guilty of the body and blood of the

  624. Lord. But let a man examine himself and

  625. so let him eat of the bread and drink of

  626. the cup. For he who eats and drinks in

  627. an unworthy manner eats and drinks

  628. judgment to himself, not discerning the

  629. Lord's body."

  630. The examination is not meant to drive

  631. sincere Christians away from the table.

  632. It's meant to bring us to the table with

  633. reverence, with humility and

  634. discernment. And every Christian should

  635. ask, am I remembering the Lord? Am I

  636. discerning his body? Am I approaching

  637. this memorial with gratitude? Am I

  638. living in a way that honors the

  639. sacrifice I am so proclaiming?

  640. That's the thing. The Lord's supper is

  641. not for the spiritually careless.

  642. It It's not for those who want the

  643. symbol while rejecting the Savior.

  644. It's not for those who want the memorial

  645. without belonging to the master.

  646. Friends, because the Lord's body and

  647. blood are so sacred, we dare not partake

  648. carelessly.

  649. and the Corinthians. Why this is even

  650. being addressed here. And there's a

  651. whole lot I could get into. My time will

  652. not allow me to. I wanted to, but I'll

  653. save that for for another time.

  654. The Corinthians had failed in this very

  655. matter. Their conduct around the Lord's

  656. supper had become selfish. They were

  657. divided. They were irreverent. They were

  658. gathering physically. But their hearts

  659. and their conduct, their behavior

  660. contradicted the very meaning of the

  661. supper.

  662. They were partaking of a memorial of

  663. sacrifice while acting selfishly.

  664. They were remembering the body of Christ

  665. while mistreating members of the body of

  666. Christ.

  667. And Paul's warning reminds us that the

  668. Lord's supper is serious because Calvary

  669. is serious.

  670. The memorial is sacred

  671. because the sacrifice is sacred.

  672. And we don't need to forget that.

  673. 1 Corinthians 11 verse 26 takes us to

    1 Corinthians 11:26

  674. this point about the Lord's supper and

  675. what that supper does. It proclaims his

  676. death until he comes. You see that in

  677. verse 26 again. For as often as you eat

  678. this bread and drink this cup, you

  679. proclaim the Lord's death till he comes.

  680. That one verse shows us that the Lord's

  681. supper really looks in in several

  682. directions. And I was thinking about

  683. this and and if you got the charts

  684. already ahead of time, then you kind of

  685. see what I'm about to put on the screen.

  686. But

  687. when you look at this and break this

  688. down and you think about the Lord's

  689. death,

  690. it looks backward to the cross.

  691. When you see the words you proclaim,

  692. that is outward in proclamation.

  693. And then when you look at the words till

  694. he comes,

  695. it looks forward in hope.

  696. And even as the verse that we're talking

  697. about a moment ago

  698. that let a man examine himself, what

  699. does that do? Well, that looks inward to

  700. the heart.

  701. And when you look at this,

  702. the Lord's supper is not silent in

  703. meaning or significance. Even when no

  704. sermon is being preached in that very

  705. moment, the supper itself is preaching.

  706. It proclaims that Jesus died. It

  707. proclaims that his death matters. It it

  708. it proclaims that his death was for sin.

  709. It proclaims that the cross is central

  710. to Christianity. It proclaims that the

  711. church has not moved beyond Calvary.

  712. We must never become too familiar with

  713. the cross.

  714. We must never become too busy for the

  715. cross. We must never become too

  716. sophisticated for the cross

  717. because the cross is not an entrylevel

  718. truth that we later outgrow. The cross

  719. is the center.

  720. Paul said in Galatians 6 and verse14,

  721. "But God forbid that I should boast

  722. except in the cross of our Lord Jesus

  723. Christ by whom the world has been

  724. crucified

  725. has been crucified to me and I to the

  726. world.

  727. The Lord's supper keeps the church

  728. centered. Y'all see that?

  729. There are many things that can occupy

  730. our minds when we assemble. Uh we think

  731. about songs and prayers and

  732. announcements and classes and sermons

  733. and responsibilities and schedules. But

  734. at the table, everything comes back to

  735. the heart of the gospel, doesn't it?

  736. Again, Christ died. Christ died for our

  737. sins. He was buried. He rose again. And

  738. he is coming again.

  739. see all of that.

  740. And that's why the Lord's supper is it's

  741. not a funeral meal for a defeated

  742. savior.

  743. It's a memorial meal for a risen Lord.

  744. We proclaim his death till he comes.

  745. And those words are filled with hope.

  746. The one we remember, he's not still in

  747. the tomb. The one whose body was given

  748. now reigns. He sits at the right hand of

  749. the throne of God make intercession for

  750. us. Thy great high priest as the Hebrew

  751. writer even speaks of. The one whose

  752. blood was shed now intercedes. The one

  753. who instituted the supper will return

  754. one day.

  755. So when we partake, we are not merely

  756. looking back with sorrow. We are looking

  757. forward even with expectation.

  758. We remember the cross, but we don't stop

  759. at the cross.

  760. We remember his death, but we also

  761. remember the victory. We proclaim his

  762. death until he comes because we believe

  763. that he lives.

  764. So every Lord's supper is an act of

  765. faith. We're saying he died, he lives,

  766. he is coming,

  767. and until he comes,

  768. we will remember.

  769. And friends, before I bring the lesson

  770. to a close,

  771. I think that to end,

  772. this is only appropriate.

  773. Is remembering the Lord must shape the

  774. way we live.

  775. One of the dangers of any memorial

  776. is that we may honor it briefly

  777. and then live as though we have

  778. forgotten it.

  779. A nation may pause on Memorial Day and

  780. then return to ingratitude.

  781. A family may visit a grave and then

  782. forget the values of one buried there.

  783. A person may look at an old photograph,

  784. feel emotion for a moment, and then go

  785. back unchanged.

  786. Could the same thing happen spiritually?

  787. Could we remember the Lord for a few

  788. minutes on Sunday and then forget him

  789. and our choices on Monday?

  790. Could we meditate on his sacrifice at

  791. the table and then live selfishly after

  792. we leave?

  793. We no longer think about our fellow

  794. brothers and sisters in Christ.

  795. We don't think about seeing them again.

  796. Maybe the next service.

  797. maybe following up to encourage somebody

  798. and we just forget

  799. about the church that Jesus died for

  800. that unites us all.

  801. Could we proclaim his death in worship

  802. and then deny his lordship in daily

  803. life? You see, true remembrance is more

  804. than a mental recall. Biblical

  805. remembrance was always focused on

  806. faithful action.

  807. When God's people remembered what the

  808. Lord had done, they were to live

  809. differently because of it.

  810. When Israel remembered Egypt, they were

  811. to be humble and obedient. When they

  812. remembered the wilderness, they were to

  813. trust God. When they remembered the

  814. covenant, they were to keep his

  815. commandments. That's how it works. So

  816. when Jesus says, "Do this in remembrance

  817. of me," he's not merely calling us to

  818. think about him for a few moments. He's

  819. calling us to let the memory of his

  820. sacrifice reclaim our hearts

  821. and center our lives. And if I remember

  822. his body, I should offer my body as a

  823. living sacrifice. Romans 12:1 and2.

    Romans 12:1

  824. If I remember his blood, I should walk

  825. in the light as he is in the light. 1

  826. John 1 and verse 7. If I remember his

  827. humility, I should lay down my pride.

  828. James talks about humble yourselves

  829. mighty hand of God.

  830. If I remember his forgiveness, I should

  831. forgive others.

  832. Jesus spoke of that. If I remember his

  833. obedience, I should obey. If I remember

  834. his love, I should love.

  835. You see, the Lord's supper is not

  836. intended to be disconnected from the

  837. rest of life. It's a weekly call back to

  838. the center so that we may go back into

  839. the world shaped by that cross.

  840. That means our remembrance follows us

  841. home.

  842. You know what that means?

  843. It should shape the way husbands and

  844. wives speak to each other, how you treat

  845. your spouses.

  846. It should shape the way parents train

  847. their children.

  848. It should shape the way we treat our

  849. fellow brethren. It should shape the way

  850. we resist temptation. It should shape

  851. the way we use our time. It should shape

  852. the way we handle conflict. It should

  853. help it should shape the way we view the

  854. lost.

  855. Because if I truly remember that Jesus

  856. gave himself for me,

  857. how can I give him only what is left

  858. over of my life?

  859. This is not a checklist

  860. on our Sunday to do things.

  861. It's not.

  862. We are walking straight into

  863. condemnation if we treat it such.

  864. Because if I truly remember that he died

  865. for sin, how can I make peace with sin?

  866. And if I truly remember that he's coming

  867. again, how can I live unprepared?

  868. Because the Lord's supper, friends,

  869. brings us to the cross.

  870. But it don't just bring us to the cross.

  871. It sends us out from the cross.

  872. It calls us to live as people who have

  873. truly been redeemed. And we know the

  874. meaning and the significance of what we

  875. do.

  876. A Christian who remembers Calvary

  877. cannot remain unchanged by Calvary.

  878. Friends, Memorial Day reminds us

  879. that earthly freedom often comes through

  880. sacrifice.

  881. And it's right to be thankful.

  882. It's right to remember. It's right to

  883. pause and reflect upon those who gave

  884. their lives in service to others. It's

  885. right.

  886. It's good. But as Christians, our minds

  887. must rise even higher.

  888. You know, sometimes I I I think about

  889. how how how

  890. crazy it is and man, that's the word I

  891. use is that we can we can look at

  892. Memorial Day and we can look at other

  893. days that we have set aside and holidays

  894. and

  895. you know and we can be thankful that we

  896. have opportunities like this in this

  897. country that we can come together and we

  898. can worship God without the fear of

  899. molestation of any man.

  900. But about the time someone says, "Hey,

  901. you know what? We're going to take that

  902. away from you." Oh, all of a sudden, you

  903. know, we get all an uproar, don't we?

  904. But where were you the rest of the time?

  905. Right?

  906. What did disassembly mean to you before

  907. someone says, "I don't you can't

  908. assemble. You can't worship." Because we

  909. have grown ungrateful.

  910. There are people on the other side of

  911. this world that don't have what we have

  912. today.

  913. And they would love to have it.

  914. They would love to have it

  915. because they are being beaten and

  916. they're being killed for what we're

  917. doing this morning.

  918. Let that sink in

  919. because the Lord's supper means

  920. something to them. Their fellow brothers

  921. and sisters, that means something to

  922. them.

  923. Christ who died on Calvary means

  924. something to them. And we got to make

  925. sure does he mean the same to us? That

  926. if it became down to oppression and

  927. persecution and whatever, what will we

  928. do? What lengths will we go to so we can

  929. worship God

  930. and we can do as he commanded?

  931. Because we rise higher because there's

  932. greater sacrifice. There's greater

  933. freedom. There's greater memorial here.

  934. Because Jesus didn't just die for one

  935. nation. He died for the entire world. He

  936. died for all mankind. He didn't die to

  937. preserve earthly liberty and freedom. He

  938. died to free us from sin, death, and

  939. condemnation.

  940. He didn't merely give his life as an

  941. example of courage.

  942. Though his courage is beyond measure, he

  943. gave his life as an atoning sacrifice.

  944. And every Lord's day we gather around

  945. his table to reme to be reminded the

  946. bread, his body that was given, the cup,

  947. the blood that was shed, the supper

  948. reminds us his death must be proclaimed.

  949. And the empty tomb reminds us he lives

  950. and the promise reminds us he is coming

  951. again.

  952. So we don't forget.

  953. We don't forget him in worship. We don't

  954. forget him in our homes. We don't forget

  955. him in our decisions. We don't forget

  956. when we're tempted. We don't forget when

  957. we get comfortable. We don't forget him

  958. when suffering. We don't forget him when

  959. gathered at the table.

  960. And if there is someone here, friends,

  961. has not obeyed the gospel of Jesus

  962. Christ,

  963. you have an opportunity

  964. to become a partaker of grace.

  965. You have an opportunity to repent of

  966. your sins, confess Jesus to be the son

  967. of the living God, be baptized, immersed

  968. to rise and walk in newness of life as

  969. you see in Romans 6 3 and 4 to partake

  970. of that grace

  971. because sacrifice

  972. of Jesus Christ made salvation possible.

  973. The gospel calls you to believe in

  974. Christ, repent of your sins, confess his

  975. name, be baptized for the forgiveness of

  976. your sins, and to be added to his

  977. church.

  978. If you're a Christian,

  979. this lesson has spoken from his word.

  980. And if we've grown cold or distracted or

  981. forgetful, you come back in heart to the

  982. cross. You remember the Lord. You

  983. remember what he gave. Remember what he

  984. purchased and remember who you are

  985. because of him. You remember that

  986. a people who forgets sacrifice

  987. will soon take freedom for granted.

  988. A Christian who forgets Calvary will

  989. soon

  990. drift from devotion.

  991. The records from the Israelites proved

  992. all of that to be true.

  993. They were told in Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  994. "Don't forget the Lord your God for what

  995. he has delivered you from." And what did

  996. they do? They built houses. They got

  997. full

  998. and they forgot.

  999. A heart that remembers the Lord will

1000. find its way back to gratitude,

1001. humility, worship, and faithful living.

  1002. Jesus said it,

1003. "Do this in remembrance of me.

  1004. less we forget.

1005. I appreciate so much your kind attention

  1006. in this lesson

1007. and I hope that this lesson has been an

  1008. encouragement to you

1009. to again remind us of why we do this

1010. and that we explain to our children the

1011. significance and the importance of why

1012. we do it. Because generations are

  1013. coming.

1014. They need to know that this is serious,

  1015. that this

1016. is not to be taken lightly.

1017. It has farreaching effects in our lives.

1018. If you're sub invitation call, the

1019. opportunity is being given as a song

1020. that has been selected to lead me to

1021. Cal. Think about the words of song with

1022. the lesson that we have just looked at.
