  1. This evening we

  2. visit our asking for a friend Q&A series

  3. by addressing a question that many

  4. people wonder about. And again, that's

  5. the whole point of the Q&A's that we do

  6. once a month. You see, I believe we

  7. missed it last month due to me being out

  8. doing a gospel meeting

  9. effort, but

  10. jumping right back into it, this lesson

  11. for this Sunday evening.

  12. This question that many people wonder,

  13. but may not always ask

  14. openly. It's a question

  15. connected to funerals, cemeteries,

  16. grief, eternity.

  17. And even our own understanding of Jesus

  18. himself.

  19. And so the question is, what do the

  20. words Sheol, Gehenna, Hades, and hell

  21. mean?

  22. It's a very interesting question. You

  23. know, we see these used throughout the

  24. Old and New Testament even. And with

  25. these with this very question that we're

  26. going to be looking at considering this

  27. evening, it naturally reaches into

  28. additional questions such as, are they

  29. all the same place? Where did Jesus go

  30. after he died? And what happens after we

  31. die? So it's a pretty interesting

  32. question. And I would submit to you that

  33. those are not merely theological

  34. questions.

  35. Uh

  36. these are eternal questions.

  37. And so

  38. and because they are eternal questions,

  39. we must approach them carefully and

  40. biblically.

  41. We don't want tradition to define these

  42. terms. We don't want movies.

  43. A lot of times that's that's one of the

  44. big ones. Hollywood uses a lot of

  45. different ideas out there.

  46. We don't want movies. We don't want

  47. culture. We don't want speculation to

  48. define these words. We want scripture to

  49. define what? Scripture. Okay? So, one

  50. reason confusion exists

  51. also is because our English Bible

  52. sometimes translate

  53. several different Hebrew and Greek words

  54. with the same English word hell. Now,

  55. >> [clears throat]

  56. >> but the original biblical words carry,

  57. if we may say, different shades of

  58. meaning and different contexts. And when

  59. we understand those particular

  60. distinctions that are made, many

  61. difficult passages suddenly become much

  62. clearer. Okay? So, for this evening, I

  63. want us to walk carefully and again,

  64. there's a lot of information that you

  65. can truly deep dive when you do word

  66. studies. All right? Word studies are

  67. always very interesting to me.

  68. And and again, when we're looking at

  69. context and all of these all of these

  70. studies are

  71. important for us as well to understand

  72. um

  73. these biblical terms.

  74. So, with that being said, we're going to

  75. look at the first one. Let's Let's go to

  76. Let's talk about Sheol. All right? This

  77. is one that

  78. we find throughout

  79. scriptures. Sheol is a Hebrew word found

  80. throughout the Old Testament scriptures.

  81. Generally speaking, Sheol refers to the

  82. realm of the dead, the unseen world, or

  83. the place of departed spirits.

  84. Now,

  85. sometimes our English Bibles will

  86. translate it as grave. You'll see the

  87. word as grave, sometimes pit, sometimes

  88. hell, but the Hebrew word behind those

  89. translations is often Sheol. And again,

  90. in your Bibles, you may have a little

  91. place that will have a reference to it.

  92. Might have little letter A or B or

  93. something like that and you'll look at

  94. the bottom and you'll see that it says

  95. may may say hell but also at the bottom

  96. may say Sheol, right? And giving you

  97. that that Hebrew word.

  98. Now, immediately we must clear away a

  99. misunderstanding.

  100. When modern readers hear the word hell,

  101. they usually think of the final place of

  102. eternal punishment. But that is not

  103. always what Sheol means. For example, in

  104. Genesis chapter 37, look at Genesis

Genesis 37 chapter mention Genesis 37 chapter mention

  105. chapter 37, look at verse 35. Sometimes

  106. we might miss this when we're talking

  107. about that of Joseph because there's a

  108. lot that goes into the study of Joseph

  109. in the Old Testament. But here in

  110. chapter 37 verse 35, we see where this

  111. word grave is actually used here. But it

  112. says "And all his sons and all his

  113. daughters arose to comfort him but he

  114. refused to be comforted and he said,

  115. 'For I shall go down to the grave to my

  116. son in mourning.' Thus his father wept

  117. for him." Now, the word translated grave

  118. actually in this passage is

  119. Sheol.

  120. Again, you might have a little notation

  121. there in your Bibles.

  122. Jacob was not saying that he expected

  123. eternal torment. And again, referencing

  124. what's going on here is Jacob believes

  125. that his son Joseph has been killed.

  126. Remember? And so in his grief, these are

  127. the words that he said there in verse 35

  128. of Genesis chapter 37. Now, again,

    Genesis 37 chapter mention

  129. Jacob was not saying he expected eternal

  130. torment. He was speaking about what? He

  131. was speaking about death itself and

  132. entering the realm of the departed.

  133. Now, and again, you'll see this

  134. throughout numerous scriptures. Like,

  135. let me give you another one. Psalm 89 in

  136. verse 48. Psalm 89 and verse 48 says,

  137. "What man can live and not see death?

  138. Can he deliver his life from the power

  139. of the grave? Selah."

  140. Well, again, the word you're going to

  141. find if you have little notation there

  142. in your Bibles, you're going to find

  143. that referencing back to the Hebrew word

  144. Sheol. Okay?

  145. How about another one?

  146. Ecclesiastes 9 and verse 10 is another

  147. passage you'll see this very thought.

  148. "Whatever your hand finds do do it with

  149. all your do it with your might for there

  150. is no work or device or knowledge or

  151. wisdom in the grave where you are

  152. going." Again,

  153. the word for grave is Sheol.

  154. Now,

  155. the Old Testament often use uses this

  156. term broadly

  157. to refer to the unseen realm of the

  158. dead. As I mentioned at the very

  159. beginning here with this one, it was

  160. associated with darkness or silence or

  161. separation from earthly life and even

  162. the end of earthly labor, just like

  163. Ecclesiastes 9 is doing here in verse

  164. 10.

  165. And what I say when we look at these

  166. words and think about the context and

  167. thinking about the importance in this

  168. study is righteous people are also said

  169. to go to Sheol.

  170. Again, Jacob expected to go there. David

  171. spoke about Sheol.

  172. So, when you think about it that way,

  173. Sheol itself was not automatically

  174. describing eternal punishment, was it?

  175. It generally referred to death and the

  176. realm beyond earthly existence.

  177. And honestly, I would tell you that that

  178. there's something humbling about that

  179. truth.

  180. Because everyone here this evening,

  181. all people for that matter, are moving

  182. toward eternity.

  183. Uh Hebrews 9 and verse 27 is a passage

  184. that, I think, you know, it spells out

  185. pretty simply. And as is appointed for

  186. man to die once, but after this

  187. the judgment.

  188. Now,

  189. the world, our society tries its best, I

  190. would say even desperately, to ignore

  191. death.

  192. Uh people distract themselves with all

  193. sorts of different things like

  194. entertainment and and uh careers, money,

  195. busyness, because deep down they know

  196. something. Deep down they know death is

  197. unavoidable.

  198. But scripture continually reminds us

  199. that life is temporary and eternity is

  200. real. And there's another aspect to this

  201. I'll I'll get into here in just a

  202. moment, but let's keep going with our

  203. word study, as well.

  204. So, when you think about the word Sheol,

  205. I kept thinking, "Well, how do I want to

  206. transition to the next word?"

  207. Uh well, the next word is Hades, okay?

  208. Uh

  209. now, this takes us from the Old

  210. Testament to the New Testament.

  211. Uh

  212. this uh word Hades is the Greek

  213. equivalent of Sheol.

  214. Okay?

  215. And

  216. the translators,

  217. when the Hebrew Old Testament was

  218. translated into Greek, the translators

  219. commonly used the Greek word Hades to

  220. translate the Hebrew word Sheol. And

  221. again, understanding there's different

  222. languages here, Hebrew and Greek, that

  223. we're talking about. So, Hades refers to

  224. you guessed it, the unseen realm of

  225. departed spirits.

  226. And one of the I would say clearest

  227. passages that that uh I believe we find

  228. concerning Hades

  229. uh is found in Luke chapter 16.

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  230. Uh uh, in the account that's given about

  231. the rich man and Lazarus.

  232. Uh, you know, in Luke chapter 16, Jesus

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  233. describes two men who died. And

  234. in that, uh,

  235. we have the the rich man. We don't have

  236. a name for it for the rich man. We just

  237. know he was a rich man. But, however, we

  238. do have the specific name of Lazarus

  239. that was used. And, uh, it's it's as

  240. Luke chapter 16, when you go on down

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  241. through that passage, it begins in verse

  242. 19. If you're turning over there,

  243. there's a few things that you'll notice

  244. about about these individuals and and,

  245. uh, Lazarus, uh, who died was carried by

  246. angels into Abraham's bosom. And then,

  247. of course, uh, that would be considered

  248. a place of comfort is what you see

  249. there. The rich man, he also died, but

  250. however, he was in torment.

  251. Now, Luke chapter 16 and verse 23 says,

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  252. "And being in torments in Hades,

  253. he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham

  254. afar off and Lazarus in his bosom."

  255. It's pretty interesting.

  256. Really, if you notice carefully,

  257. uh, what Jesus reveals here.

  258. Because in verses 24 through 27,

  259. we we find the text where Jesus goes on

  260. to talk about what's going on there. It

  261. says, "Then he cried and said," now this

  262. is talking about the rich man, "Father

  263. Abraham, have mercy on me and send

  264. Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his

  265. finger in water and cool my tongue, for

  266. I am tormented in this flame. But,

  267. Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in

  268. your lifetime you received your good

  269. things and likewise Lazarus evil things.

  270. But, now he is comforted and you are

  271. tormented. And besides all this, between

  272. us and you, there is a great gulf fixed,

  273. so that those who want to pass from here

  274. to you cannot, nor can those from there

  275. pass to us.'"

  276. So, what is one thing that you

  277. automatically kind of jumps out to you

  278. when you read verses 24 through 27.

  279. I think the first thing is that both men

  280. are consciously aware. Y'all see that?

  281. They're consciously aware of what's

  282. going on. They're conscious after death.

  283. Now, the rich man, what does he do in

  284. his conscious awareness? Well, he

  285. remembers his brothers is one of the

  286. things noted. Uh he remembers his life.

  287. He he he's he experiences suffering. But

  288. on the other hand, Lazarus is

  289. experiencing comfort.

  290. Here's the point. Death

  291. did not end their existence, did it?

  292. No.

  293. Second of all,

  294. there is mention of a separation between

  295. the righteous and the wicked. Abraham

  296. explained something. He explained to the

  297. rich man. He says that there is a great

  298. gulf

  299. fixed so that none may cross from one

  300. side to the other. Y'all see? Now,

  301. that's another thing. What's the third

  302. thing? The third thing is this scene is

  303. not the final judgment because

  304. resurrection and eternal sentencing have

  305. not yet occurred.

  306. So, when you think about Hades, the

  307. temporary state,

  308. in in the way it's described in in even

  309. what you see in Revelation, I'll bring

  310. those passages up as well, of of those

  311. awaiting resurrection and final

  312. judgment. And Revelation 20 and verses

  313. 13 through 15, you know, we were

  314. studying this not too long ago and it's

  315. pretty interesting how you see the word

  316. Hades is mentioned here also.

  317. Says, "The sea gave up the dead who were

  318. in it and death and Hades delivered up

  319. the dead who were in them." All right?

  320. And they were what? What's the next

  321. word?

  322. Judged each one according to his works.

  323. Then death and Hades were cast into the

  324. lake of fire. This is the second death.

  325. And anyone not found written in the book

  326. of life was cast

  327. into the lake of fire.

  328. Now,

  329. again,

  330. think about this carefully.

  331. A- If Hades itself

  332. is cast into the lake of fire, then

  333. Hades cannot be the final eternal state.

  334. Now, if we're logically reasoning this,

  335. you know,

  336. and and this again, think about how

  337. Hades is temporary.

  338. The final judgment eternal comes later.

  339. And and this reminds us of again another

  340. sobering truth.

  341. Death does not end existence.

  342. Now, the point that I keep going back to

  343. that is because if you have any

  344. If you have taken any time to study with

  345. others, and a lot of times I love these

  346. questions that come up because again,

  347. these are questions that not only, you

  348. know, Christians may have uh regarding

  349. regarding these topics, but even if we

  350. may be well versed in some of this, it's

  351. a great reminder for us because we're

  352. going to have conversations with folks.

  353. Because, you know what? There's folks

  354. that don't understand those words like

  355. Sheol and Hades and Gehenna and hell.

  356. They don't understand those types of

  357. words. And and and they're going to come

  358. across those and and even the context

  359. may have some confusion as to Wait a

  360. second, it says this over here, but you

  361. know, how does that work between the

  362. Hebrew and the Greek? So, understanding

  363. these things are very important for us

  364. to take the time to to take this because

  365. again, what the world is doing and what

  366. the world has said, if you studied with

  367. anybody at any time regarding in our

  368. modern world, they often treat death as

  369. complete annihilation, extinction, or

  370. nonexistence.

  371. That's that's that is a big thing that's

  372. being taught.

  373. But Jesus is teaching what? Conscious

  374. existence beyond the grave. He's saying,

  375. "Look, the soul continues.

  376. Eternity continues." And that truth

  377. really ought to shake us to the very

  378. core and

  379. spiritually shake up awaken us.

  380. Because I I I would submit to you that

  381. every funeral really is a reminder

  382. that eternity is not a theory.

  383. It's not a theory.

  384. It is reality.

  385. And these words

  386. show us some very interesting things.

  387. Well,

  388. there's a lot more I could even say on

  389. that one. But

  390. let's talk about the word Gehenna.

  391. Gehenna.

  392. Gehenna

  393. is the word most directly associated

  394. with final eternal punishment.

  395. Now, and again, if you

  396. and maybe never heard that word used

  397. before,

  398. uh

  399. you'll find it when you're you're

  400. looking at these words like the word

  401. Gehenna and where it comes from or

  402. derives from is actually the Valley of

  403. Hinnom that was outside Jerusalem.

  404. Historically, it became associated with

  405. terrible wickedness,

  406. uh with with idolatry and and even child

  407. sacrifice, okay?

  408. During period of of Israel's rebellion.

  409. Uh later it became associated with

  410. uncleanness and and and burning refuse.

  411. Now, Jesus uses this word Gehenna

  412. to really I would say horrifying imagery

  413. to describe eternal judgment.

  414. When you go to Matthew chapter 10 and

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  415. you look at verse 28.

  416. Verse 28. Matthew 10 verse 28. Look at

    Matthew 10:28

  417. it. Jesus said, "And do not fear those

  418. who kill the body but cannot kill the

  419. soul, but rather fear him who is able to

  420. destroy both soul and body in hell."

  421. Now,

  422. you're saying, "Well, D.J., that don't

  423. say Gehenna."

  424. Right? That says hell. Now,

  425. of course it does and as I said at the

  426. very beginning, you're going to see that

  427. word in the English here that's being

  428. used.

  429. But, you might have a notation.

  430. If you do, you know what you're going to

  431. find?

  432. The bottom of your Bibles, you're going

  433. to find the word Gehenna because that's

  434. the Greek word that's being used.

  435. So, this is not merely the realm of the

  436. dead.

  437. This is not simply an unseen world. This

  438. is final eternal punishment that's being

  439. discussed. So, Jesus actually repeatedly

  440. warned about Gehenna because sin is

  441. serious and judgment is real.

  442. One again, the tragedies of modern our

  443. modern world even is that many people

  444. want a savior without wanting

  445. submission.

  446. They want heaven without holiness. They

  447. want comfort without conviction. But,

  448. Jesus in all these teachings and how

  449. much he loves souls so much that he

  450. would die on the cross of Calvary for

  451. our sins,

  452. he was

  453. he loved us too much to remain silent

  454. about eternal judgment. If you back up a

  455. chapter or rather go go to Mark, the

  456. book of Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  457. Mark chapter 9, look at verses 47 and

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  458. verse 48.

  459. Mark chapter 9 47 and 48.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  460. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck

  461. it out. It is better for you to enter

  462. the kingdom of God with one eye rather

  463. than having two eyes to be cast into

  464. hellfire,

  465. where their worm does not die and the

  466. fire is not quenched.

  467. Now, again,

  468. you're looking at that word

  469. hell and

  470. which one is he talking about here? What

  471. is he talking about when he used that

  472. word? He's describing Gehenna.

  473. Gehenna is the Greek word there.

  474. And again, these are sobering words,

  475. right?

  476. Uh

  477. honestly, we we should not ever

  478. apologize for biblical truth simply

  479. because modern culture dislikes it.

  480. We don't apologize for

  481. because just as Jesus made it clear even

  482. in passages such as these that are that

  483. are that are

  484. has some pretty heavy imagery here

  485. that hell is real,

  486. judgment is real, eternity is real.

  487. And Jesus spoke about these realities

  488. because he wanted people to

  489. repent of their sins. He wanted them to

  490. follow him.

  491. Now,

  492. at this point in in really briefly we

  493. went over these these terms and again I

  494. tell you there's there's a lot that when

  495. you

  496. again deep dive into these studies.

  497. But when you're

  498. taking all of this and kind of

  499. summarizing the these this terminology,

  500. I I think the way that we can do that is

  501. pretty simple from what we've seen so

  502. far briefly.

  503. Sheol is the Old Testament term

  504. generally referring to the realm of the

  505. dead.

  506. Hades, as we noted, is the New Testament

  507. Greek equivalent referring to the unseen

  508. realm of departed spirits.

  509. Gehenna

  510. refers to the final place of eternal

  511. punishment.

  512. And the English word that we saw

  513. several times already translated this,

  514. hell,

  515. has sometimes again been used

  516. and sometimes translated for all these

  517. words,

  518. which again is why sometimes questions

  519. like this come up because

  520. you know, again, understanding the

  521. difference and what's being discussed

  522. and and I want to

  523. bring that up in this next point as to

  524. as to how this confusion has happened.

  525. Because some people will naturally look

  526. at certain passages

  527. and say, "Well, wait a second.

  528. Uh when I read Acts chapter 2 or I'm

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  529. reading uh Psalm,

  530. where did Jesus go?

  531. Where did he go

  532. after he died?

  533. He was crucified and he died. He was

  534. buried. Okay? Where did Jesus go?"

  535. Well,

  536. when you're

  537. looking at this and and again, if you've

  538. had any discussions with folks, this is

  539. this has been

  540. a pretty big topic at times when you're

  541. studying.

  542. Because some people have mistakenly

  543. imagined that Jesus descended into

  544. eternal hellfire after his death.

  545. Does scripture teach that?

  546. Well, when you look at Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:27

  547. verse 27, what is Peter doing there?

  548. He's quoting.

  549. He's quoting from an Old Testament

  550. passage of Psalm chapter 16.

    Psalms 16 chapter mention

  551. How do we answer that? Well, Acts 2

    Acts 2:27

  552. verse 27 says, "For you will not leave

  553. my soul in Hades,

  554. Hades,

  555. nor will you allow your holy one to see

  556. what?

  557. Corruption. Okay. Now,

  558. interestingly, when you when you go and

  559. you you look at that passage and again,

  560. there's context there and and even when

  561. you're considering who was talking, who

  562. was being referred to, and so forth and

  563. so on. It's very important to note this

  564. because it it as it goes on

  565. and and what Peter is is talking about

  566. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  567. this is quoting Psalm 16, right? And

  568. your reference will show verses 8

  569. through 11.

  570. Now, what even Peter goes on to make

  571. mention of that this in this Psalm 16

  572. was David that was talking here, okay?

  573. And if you go on down a little bit,

  574. verse 29, what's it say in Acts 2 and

  575. verse 29? Men and brethren, let me speak

  576. freely to you of the patriarch David

  577. that he is both dead and buried and his

  578. tomb is with us to this day.

  579. Now, therefore being a prophet and

  580. knowing that God had sworn with an oath

  581. to him that of the fruit of his body,

  582. according to the flesh, he would raise

  583. up the Christ to sit on his throne. He

  584. foresaw He foreseeing this spoke

  585. concerning the resurrection of the

  586. Christ that his soul was not left in

  587. What's that next word?

  588. Hades.

  589. Nor did his flesh see corruption. This

  590. Jesus God has raised up, of which we are

  591. all witnesses. Now,

  592. here here's here's points that that's

  593. being made.

  594. Jesus died, okay? He truly did. He died.

  595. His body was placed in tomb. His spirit,

  596. okay?

  597. Where did it go?

  598. Where was he?

  599. Not leave my soul in Hades. What do we

  600. say about Hades?

  601. That's not eternal hell, is it?

  602. That's not That's not the word Gehenna.

  603. Okay?

  604. Although he went to Some of you use the

  605. word Hades and realm, although he went

  606. to Hades,

  607. he was not abandoned in Hades. Death

  608. could not hold him.

  609. All right?

  610. Look at this even.

  611. What what is the meaning when you look

  612. at Luke 23 and verse 43?

  613. There's There's I mean I could I could

  614. go so much Luke 23 and verse 43. And

  615. Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to

  616. you, today you'll be with me in

  617. paradise."

  618. Who's Jesus talking to there in that

  619. passage?

  620. Thief on the cross, right?

  621. Interestingly, that Jesus told the thief

  622. on the cross this.

  623. So, what what does that mean? What

  624. What's happening here? Well, Jesus

  625. entered the realm of the departed, but

  626. he did not enter Gehenna

  627. as one suffering eternal punishment.

  628. See, and again, we have to understand

  629. terminology. It's really that important.

  630. It's really important because again,

  631. this is a confusing thing for people

  632. uh

  633. on on many levels. The point that's even

  634. being made is he conquered death itself,

  635. and the victory changes everything.

  636. Look at what is stated in Revelation

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  637. chapter 1 and verse 18.

  638. Revelation 1 and verse 18.

  639. I would I would say this is one of the

  640. most triumphant declarations. All right?

  641. Verse 18, Revelation 1. "I am he who

  642. lives and was dead, and behold, I am

  643. alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the

  644. keys of

  645. Hades and of death."

  646. That is a glorious statement, especially

  647. when you understand who he's talking

  648. about.

  649. On those words,

  650. death does not hold the keys anymore.

  651. The grave does not reign supreme anymore

  652. cuz Jesus conquered death.

  653. And that's why when you even go to 1

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  654. Corinthians chapter 15,

  655. Paul could triumphantly declare these

  656. words, verses 54 and 55.

  657. "So, when this corruptible has put on

  658. incorruption and this mortal has put on

  659. immortality, then shall be brought to

  660. pass the saying that is written, 'Death

  661. is swallowed up in victory. O death,

  662. where is your sting? O Hades, where is

  663. your

  664. victory?"

  665. You see, for the faithful Christian,

  666. death is no longer the hopeless end. It

  667. becomes the doorway into eternal

  668. fellowship with God.

  669. Understanding

  670. uh these terms and and and again, uh

  671. from my knowledge and and what I've

  672. gained over time and studying God's word

  673. and looking at at these at these terms,

  674. I think it's comforting, isn't it?

  675. As a Christian, we think about what that

  676. means. Those who had fallen asleep.

  677. Remember how that's referred to in 1

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  678. Thessalonians chapter 4.

  679. And what Jesus had has has taught on

  680. this very subject himself to give us

  681. uh the the very uh again, information.

  682. There's a lot of things that I I

  683. don't know and we may not completely

  684. know everything, obviously.

  685. Uh but this is the grasp that that I'm

  686. I'm seeing when I look at these verses.

  687. And the next question that will will end

  688. with is again,

  689. what happens after we die?

  690. I think that's one of the greatest

  691. questions that has echoed throughout the

  692. history of humanity.

  693. What happens after we die?

  694. Every funeral asks this question,

  695. basically. I mean, maybe something

  696. that's said out loud.

  697. Uh

  698. every cemetery, I I would say, whispers

  699. it.

  700. I would say that every grieving heart

  701. feels it.

  702. Uh and despite all of man's

  703. technological advancements and

  704. scientific achievements,

  705. no human philosophy has ever been able

  706. to remove the reality of death or answer

  707. eternity apart from God's revelation.

  708. It's not that they just can't do it

  709. apart from God's revelation.

  710. Because the Bible consistently teaches

  711. that death is not the extinction.

  712. Again, whether you know this or not,

  713. this is taught, this is believed on

  714. levels that in your colleges, people

  715. there's people on the grounds that will

  716. speak on these types of things, you

  717. know, that once you're dead, you're dead

  718. like Rover, you're dead all over, kind

  719. of thing, okay? That's what That's what

  720. they do with this.

  721. That's kind of the terminology that

  722. they've been used.

  723. But human beings are more than flesh and

  724. blood.

  725. We possess an eternal spirit created by

  726. God. I mean, I could go all the way back

  727. to Genesis and think about how God

  728. breathed, right, into man. Think about

  729. that, the significance of of that

  730. description.

  731. And so, with this eternal spirit that's

  732. created by God and is is described much,

  733. obviously, throughout the scriptures,

  734. when physical death occurs,

  735. consciousness it's does not cease.

  736. You know?

  737. And as we noted earlier in the lesson,

  738. the Hebrew writer declares about men

  739. once to die, and after this, the

  740. judgment. That That if you'll ever

  741. notice that the scriptures does not

  742. describe death as the end.

  743. As the end all of everything, you know,

  744. you're just gone. You don't exist

  745. anymore.

  746. But what is pronounced here, as we see

  747. in Revelation chapter 20 even, is death

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  748. is followed by judgment.

  749. That means existence continues beyond

  750. the grave. Jesus himself taught this,

  751. yet again, repeatedly you'll find it.

  752. Prime example, John chapter 5, verses 28

    John 5:28

  753. and 29.

  754. Do not marvel at this, for the hour is

  755. coming which all who are in the grave

  756. will hear his voice and come forth.

  757. Those who have done good to the

  758. resurrection of life, and those who have

  759. done evil to the resurrection of

  760. condemnation. See, we can get all talk

  761. about

  762. resurrection as well. Much of what Paul

  763. even discussed in

  764. in many passages of in Corinthians as

  765. well as

  766. Thessalonians.

  767. Because Paul

  768. again reinforced this truth of what the

  769. Bible speaks and teaches about

  770. resurrection and accountability.

  771. One day

  772. all who has ever lived will stand before

  773. God.

  774. Paul reinforced this truth, didn't he?

  775. In 2 Corinthians 5 and verse 10. For we

  776. must all appear before the judgment seat

  777. of Christ. That each one may receive the

  778. things done in the body according to

  779. what he has done whether good or bad.

  780. Now, it's interesting

  781. that when you go through the scriptures

  782. you

  783. again, this is not a new issue. Okay,

  784. this is not a new issue that we're

  785. seeing. You go throughout history, some

  786. have denied conscious existence after

  787. death. Ancient groups like the

  788. Sadducees. Y'all remember them? The

  789. Sadducees, they rejected the spirit

  790. realm all together and denied the

  791. continued existence of the soul. Didn't

  792. they deny resurrection? Yeah, sure did.

  793. Yet Jesus exposed the error of that

  794. belief when you look at Luke chapter 20

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  795. and verses 37 and 38 when he reminded

  796. them that God declared himself to be the

  797. God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob long

  798. after those patriarchs had physically

  799. died.

  800. Look at that. Verse 37 38 of Luke

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  801. chapter 20. But even Moses showed in the

  802. burning bush passage that the dead are

  803. raised when he called the Lord the God

  804. of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the

  805. God of Jacob for he is not the God of

  806. the dead but of the living for all live

  807. to him.

  808. You see, that's what Jesus was

  809. concluding from that with the Sadducees.

  810. He is not the God of the dead, but of

  811. the living.

  812. Though their bodies have long been

  813. buried,

  814. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob still existed

  815. before God.

  816. And the Bible repeatedly teaches this

  817. very thought. We saw in Luke chapter 16

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  818. and what Jesus was teaching about the

  819. rich man and Lazarus.

  820. One experienced comfort while the other

  821. experienced torment. The rich man

  822. remembered his life and his brother's.

  823. Lazarus was comforted Abraham's bosom.

  824. Death, interestingly, what I glean from

  825. that,

  826. had not erased awareness.

  827. Revelation 6,

  828. another passage.

  829. Remember the soul of martyrs in

  830. Revelation chapter 6?

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  831. How are they pictured?

  832. They're pictured as conscious,

  833. crying out before God.

  834. That's what you find in Revelation

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  835. chapter 6.

  836. What does Hebrews 12 speak of regarding

  837. the spirits?

  838. The spirits of just men made perfect.

  839. It's interesting. And again, this this

  840. is a whole

  841. You you can take all of this, and I

  842. mean, go home and and study and look at

  843. all of this. So much so much information

  844. that I'm not able to get into uh

  845. tonight.

  846. But even Stephen, I I thought about him

  847. as he was dying, what did he pray? Lord

  848. Jesus, receive my what? Spirit.

  849. Interesting.

  850. What I'm What I'm showing is the

  851. consistent testimony of scripture is

  852. that the spirit continues

  853. after physical death.

  854. But the Bible also teaches that the

  855. present state is not the final state.

  856. One day Christ will return.

  857. The dead will be raised.

  858. See, that's again, you look at 1

  859. Thessalonians speaks about this. Paul

  860. has a lot to say about that. 1

  861. Corinthians 15 There's There's a lot,

  862. okay?

  863. And all will stand before God in

  864. judgment.

  865. For the faithful child of God, that day

  866. is one of hope. It's one of victory.

  867. But for those who reject God, those who

  868. reject scripture,

  869. those who reject his will repeatedly

  870. warned.

  871. The word repeatedly warns of eternal

  872. separation and punishment.

  873. Because that's how Jesus described

  874. Gehenna

  875. as everlasting fire.

  876. Revelation describes the lake of fire

  877. where punishment continues forever and

  878. ever.

  879. And while some attempt to explain away

  880. these warnings that are given in the

  881. scripture as mere extinction or or mere

  882. annihilation,

  883. the language of scripture points instead

  884. to conscious eternal consequences.

  885. The Bible describes

  886. punishment, judgment, separation, and

  887. everlasting destruction. Not Not the

  888. disappearance

  889. of existence itself.

  890. That reality, again, at the very core

  891. should sober every single heart.

  892. Every.

  893. Because life is not random.

  894. And death is not

  895. an unforeseen accident. It's It's not

  896. the end.

  897. And eternity is not imaginary, friends.

  898. And I submit to you

  899. that

  900. everyone

  901. of us

  902. here this evening

  903. is preparing for forever.

  904. Let that sink in. I know that's a hard

  905. thing for us to to kind of

  906. in our minds cuz forever

  907. cuz we're accustomed to things that have

  908. a beginning and that have an ending,

  909. don't we?

  910. That story begins

  911. in a land far, far away and then it

  912. ends. All right.

  913. This this is where we have to really

  914. takes that self-examination and really

  915. look deep because what we're doing is

  916. we're preparing for forever.

  917. Whether we realize it or not because the

  918. question is not whether eternity exist,

  919. the question is where will we spend it?

  920. That's the question.

  921. And that's why the gospel

  922. matters so deeply.

  923. Jesus Christ entered death and conquered

  924. it.

  925. We saw that in scriptures.

  926. Many more I can give you for that. He

  927. walked in the grave, he rose victorious.

  928. And because he lives, those who belong

  929. to him do not face death without hope.

  930. Thinking about what Peter

  931. stated in 2 Peter 3:10-14.

    2 Peter 3:10–14

  932. Look at this description about the day

  933. of the Lord. There's a whole lot I could

  934. say on that one, too.

  935. 2 Peter chapter 3:10-14, but the day of

  936. the Lord will come as a thief in the

  937. night in which the heavens will pass

  938. away with a great noise and the elements

  939. will melt with fervent heat. Both the

  940. earth and the works that are in it will

  941. be burned up. Therefore, since all these

  942. things will be dissolved, what manner of

  943. persons ought you to be

  944. in holy conduct and godliness.

  945. Looking for and hastening the coming of

  946. the day of God because of which the

  947. heavens will dissolve being on fire and

  948. the elements will melt with fervent

  949. heat. Nevertheless, we according to his

  950. promise look for new heavens and a new

  951. earth in which righteousness dwells.

  952. Therefore, beloved looking forward to

  953. these things, be diligent to be found by

  954. him in peace without spot and blameless.

  955. In other words,

  956. eternity should shape how we live right

  957. now.

  958. Every decision matters. Every soul

  959. matters. Every opportunity to obey the

  960. gospel matters.

  961. Cuz after death comes eternity.

  962. No matter what's taught, even some

  963. people say, "Well, you can have this

  964. chance and and someone can pay you out

  965. of this, you know, on this side. They

  966. can pay so much money to a priest and

  967. get you out of

  968. That is nowhere

  969. in this word, okay?

  970. It's not there.

  971. It's not.

  972. Now, that might give people some

  973. I don't know, some kind of sense of

  974. well, security of well, you know, if I

  975. didn't do it right this first go around,

  976. then I'll have a second chance or

  977. somebody might care for me on the other

  978. side, you know, living still and they'll

  979. be like, "You know what? I'm going to

  980. I'm going to take care of things." That

  981. is not what the Bible teaches.

  982. And I know how That sounds kind of weird

  983. to us. You never heard that That's

  984. what's That's what's taught. That's

  985. taught.

  986. And people believe that.

  987. Flies in the very face of what scripture

  988. speaks and tells.

  989. For instance, after death,

  990. that's it.

  991. Physically,

  992. the choices have been made. It's done.

  993. Cuz then eternity.

  994. But the most important question this

  995. evening is not merely, you know, what do

  996. these words mean? And I'm glad I I

  997. appreciate so much that looking at these

  998. words has helped remind me of a lot in

  999. the study.

1000. But the most important question tonight

1001. as we end is am I ready to meet God?

  1002. Cuz everyone

1003. will step beyond this life. And when

1004. that moment comes, only one thing will

  1005. matter.

1006. Whether we have been found faithful to

  1007. the word of God.

1008. So this evening, the Lord offers offers

1009. salvation to all who will come to him in

1010. obedient faith. The invitation is

1011. extended. The one who holds the keys of

1012. death and Hades invites you to come

1013. while there is still time on this side

1014. of eternity. Don't wait until eternity

1015. to think seriously about yourself. I I

1016. spent you could spend a lot thinking

1017. about that about the rich man and all

1018. the things. They had Moses and the

1019. prophets is what Abraham told him.

  1020. Let them hear them.

  1021. We don't wait

1022. to think seriously about ourselves. We

1023. think about it right now.

1024. We think about it right now. If you

1025. haven't put on the body of Christ in

1026. baptism, you can do that tonight.

1027. Repenting of your sins, confessing Jesus

1028. that he is the son of living God and

1029. you're baptized for the remission of

1030. your sins to rise and walk in this life.

1031. You have to do something with that

1032. belief and it's got to move past a mere

1033. acceptance that there is a God and that

  1034. there is Jesus.

1035. You got to do something with it.

1036. We'd love to help you with that. As a

  1037. disciple of Christ, something that's a

  1038. mission in your life,

1039. need prayers on your behalf, whatever

  1040. your spiritual need.

1041. And all that we've talked about with

  1042. Hades and and death,

  1043. we talked about Gehenna,

  1044. about hellfire.

1045. All those kind of are kind of sad, you

1046. know, things in a sense. But to the

1047. Christian death, you know what that

  1048. means?

1049. That means glory. That means victory.

  1050. That means

1051. to be with the Lord one day.
