These Three Remain (Sermon & Song) - DJ Dickerson - 5/31/26

Our theme this evening's these three

remain. And as you see the the scripture

there that's underneath the title 1

Corinthians 13 and verse 13. I'm sure

you already guessed that already. And

which that scripture says and now abide

faith, hope, love these three but the

greatest of these is love. We think

about the church at Corenth and uh they

had many blessings. They had knowledge,

they had spiritual gifts, they had

ability. Uh but they also had some other

things and that was division, pride,

they had spiritual immaturity. Well, in

1 Corinthians chapter 13, Paul was

reminding them that religious activity

without love is empty. He would even say

in verses the first three verses that

though I speak uh with the tongues of

men of angels but have not love I have

become s sounding brass or a claim

symbol and though I have the gift of

prophecy and understand all mysteries

and all knowledge and though I have all

faith so that I could remove mountains

but have not love I am nothing and

though I bestow all my goods to feed the

poor and though I give my body to be

burned but have not love it profits me

nothing.

And then Paul lifts their eyes to what

truly remains. Some things were

temporary. Some things would cease. Some

things belonged to that age and would

pass away. But three things would

remain.

Faith, hope, and love.

Faith, as we'll talk about, and hope as

well as love. Faith trusts what God has

spoken. Hope holds to what God has

promised. And love reflects the heart of

God who first loved us. So this evening

we'll think about these three words

briefly through scripture as well as

song. And let's start with our first

scripture reading. Brother Bill Rose

will lead us Hebrews chapter 11 and

Hebrews 11 · chapter mention

verses 1-6. And following this scripture

reading, Brother Kyle Copeland will lead

us in a supplement 25. I close my eyes.

Now faith is the substance of things

hoped for, the evidence of things not

seen.

For by it the elders obtained a good

testimony.

By faith we understand that the worlds

were framed by the word of God, so that

the things which are seen were not made

of things which are visible.

By faith, Abel offered to God a more

excellent sacrifice than Cain, and

through which he obtained witness that

he was righteous, God testifying of his

gifts, and through it he being dead

still speaks. By faith, Enoch was taken

away, so he did not see death, and was

not found because God had taken him. For

before he was taken, he had his

testimony that he pleased God.

But without faith, it's impossible to

please him. For he who comes to God must

believe that he is and that he is the

rewarder of those who diligently seek

him.

Hold on a second. Hold on a second. I'm

We talk about faith, trusting what God

has spoken. As we think about faith,

faith is not guesswork. Uh faith is not

blind optimism. Uh biblical faith is

trusting God because God has spoken.

Hebrews 11 verse one that brother Bill

just read there for us. Now faith is a

substance of things hoped for the

evidence of things not seen. The point

that we find from these passages the

songs that we sing is that faith reaches

beyond what the eye can see because it

trusts the God who sees all things. Noah

had faith before the rain came. Abraham

had faith before he knew where the

journey would lead. Moses had faith

before Israel had crossed the Red Sea.

Joshua had faith before the walls of

Jericho failed. All of that recorded, of

course, in our scriptures and even

Hebrews 11 touches on those accounts

that faith acts on God's word even

before it sees the outcome. And what

does verse six say from our reading? But

without faith, it is impossible to

please him. For he who comes to God must

believe that he is and that he is a

rewarder of those who diligently seek

him. You know what that tells us? It

tells us faith's not optional. Uh we

cannot please God without trusting him.

That second verse of that psalm, right?

Trust.

The one who comes to God must believe

that he is and that he rewards those who

diligently seek him. And that's what

faith does really. Faith changes the way

we worship, how we worship. It changes

how we obey. It changes how we endure.

It changes how we face uncertainty. We

look to God's word because we're walking

by what? By faith and not by sight. 2

Corinthians 5 and verse 7. So that means

the Christian life cannot be governed

merely by what looks easy or what looks

safe or what looks popular or what looks

what looks convenient.

We walk by faith. We live by trusting

God's word. And when God commands, faith

obeys. When God warns, faith listens.

When God promises, faith believes. And

when God leads, faith follows. That's

why this next song that we're about to

sing, faith is

the victory.

From that very verse,

John wrote in 1 John 5 and verse4, for

whatever is born of God overcomes the

world. And this is the victory that has

overcome the world. Our faith

faith overcomes

because faith clings to God when the

world pressures us, when trials test us,

and when circumstances

confuse us. So as we sing this song, let

us remember that victory is not found in

our own strength. is not found on wisdom

or in our own ability. Victory is found

in trusting the Lord. Number 576,

faith is the victory. Uh, brother Mike

Burton will lead us in all verses of

this song. And following this song, our

next scripture reading will be by

brother Keith Wise from Romans 8 18-2.

For I consider that the sufferings of

this present time are not worthy to be

compared with the glory which shall be

revealed in us. For the earnest

expectation of the creation eagerly

awaits for the revealing of the sons of

God. For the creation was subjected to

futility, not willingly, but because of

him who subjected it in hope. Because

the creation itself also will be

delivered from the bondage of corruption

into the glorious liberty of the

children of God. For we know that the

whole creation groans and labors with

birth panges together until now. Not

only that, but we also hope who have the

first fruits of the spirit, even we

ourselves grown within ourselves,

eagerly waiting for the adoption, the

redemption of our body. For we are saved

in this hope, but the hope that is seen

is not hope. For why does one still hope

for what he sees? But if we hope for

what we do not see, we eagerly wait for

it with perseverance.

We're thinking about faith, how faith

looks upward to God's word. But be

because we trust what God has spoken, we

can also hold firmly to what God has

promised. And that brings us to what

we're just reading there from Romans

Romans 8 · chapter mention

chapter 8 about hope. Holding to what

God has promised. You know, hope is one

of the great blessings of the Christian

life. Uh in everyday language, people

often uh will use that word hope to mean

uncertainty. Uh we say I hope it works

out, right? Use that kind of language or

I hope things get better. But biblical

hope that we're reading about is

stronger than that because biblical hope

is confident expectation. That's what

Paul was talking about in Romans chapter

Romans 8 · chapter mention

8, right? It's based on the promises of

God. So hope does not mean well maybe

God will keep his word or or you know uh

maybe no God has spoken and and you know

we're just not sure. Hope means God has

spoken and his promises are sure.

No Romans 8

is honest about suffering.

Paul says creation groans. That wording

um we ourselves grown, you know, because

we're not immune uh from that of pain or

sorrow or sickness or loss or hardship.

We understand that kind of that kind of

wording. But Paul says, "For I consider

that the sufferings of this present time

are not worthy to to be compared," y'all

see that with a glory which shall be

revealed in us. What is that word? Hope.

That's what we're seeing in that

passage. Hope.

Hope does not deny suffering.

Hope says suffering is not final.

Hope does not pretend that darkness is

not real. Hope says that darkness will

not overcome light.

Hope does not say Christians will never

weep.

Hope says Christians do not weep as

those who have no hope. First

Thessalonians 4 talks about that.

Our hope is not built on health. It's

not built on on money, comfort,

politics, earthly security, or human

strength. Our hope is not built on those

things. Because as we know, if we've

lived any amount of time upon this

earth, we realize that all of those

things I just mentioned can change in an

instant.

But our hope is built on Christ.

Jesus died, was buried, rose again, and

reigns,

and he's coming again. And because he

lives, we have hope beyond the grave.

Peter spoke about how God has begotten

us again to a living hope through the

resurrection of Jesus Christ from the

dead.

Well friends, our hope is living because

our savior is living. That's how that

works.

So when we sing this next song, the

solid rock,

we need to remember that our hope is

built on nothing less than Jesus blood

and righteousness.

It's not built on the shifting

circumstances of life. And we need that

reminder again today. 378, the solid

rock. We'll sing first, third, and

fourth verses of this song. Brother Kyle

Mazdc.

Hebrews chapter 6 gives us another

Hebrews 6 · chapter mention

beautiful picture. It says that hope,

we had this hope as an anchor of the

soul. You know, I thought about this,

you know, that an anchor uh may not seem

important when the water's calm. Um but

when the storm rises and and the waves

begin to beat against the ship, uh well,

the anchor matters, doesn't it? Well,

you think about the soul. The soul needs

an anchor.

Life has storms. Temptation can be a

storm. Grief can be a storm. Uh fear can

be a storm. You can list many other

ones. encouragement or uncertainty.

There's several.

And when the storms come, the question

is, what holds your soul?

If our soul is anchored in comfort,

guess what? Comfort can disappear. Uh if

if our soul is anchored in health, well,

I think we understand health can fail.

Anchored in people, well, people can

disappoint. uh anchored in self. Well,

I'll find real quickly and you will too

that I'm not strong enough and neither

are you. But if our soul is anchored in

Christ, we can be held in every storm.

That does not mean that we won't feel

the wind.

It doesn't mean that we'll never see the

waves,

but it does mean that we are held by one

greater than the storm.

Because Christian hope says this world

is not all that there is. Hope says God

is not finished. Hope says the promises

are still true. Hope says heaven heaven

is worth it. And hope says be faithful

unto death and he will give you a crown

of life. That's what hope says.

It's what the scriptures make abundantly

and clear. And even as the songs

speak loudly as well. 496. We have an

anchor.

John 4 in verses 7- 11.

Beloved, let us love one another, for

love is of God, and everyone who loves

is born of God and knows God. He who

does not love does not know God, for God

is love. In this the love of God was

manifested toward us, that God has sent

his only begotten son into the world,

that we might live through him. In this

is love, not that we love God, but that

he loved us and sent his son to be the

perpetuation for our sins. Beloved, if

God so loved us, we also ought to love

one another.

So as we started out faith, trust what

God has spoken.

The second word, hope holds to what God

has promised.

Recognizing what Paul said even 1

Corinthians 13 and verse 13, he said,

"The greatest of these is love."

Faith is essential.

Hope is powerful.

But love is greatest because love most

fully reflects the character of God

himself.

So we come to this word love

living like the God who first loved us.

I thought about how the world talks a

lot about love.

But the world often defines love in

shallow type ways. Sometimes love is

treated as simply an emotion. Uh It's

even confused with the approval of

everything.

And sometimes love is reduced to just

sentiments. But scripture defines love

by pointing us to God.

And what did John say there? 1 John 4

and verse 8. God is love.

That does not mean that love is whatever

man wants it to be. It means true love

must be understood by looking at God and

looking to God. And the question that I

pose in this is where has God shown his

love most clearly

at the cross.

Verse nine, that's what it says in this.

The love of God was manifested toward us

that God has sent his only begotten son

into the world that we might live

through him. What that tells me is love

begins with God.

We did not earn it. We did not deserve

it. It says God loved first. I think

about Romans 5 and verse eight even. But

God demonstrates his own love toward us

in that while we were still sinners,

Christ died

for us. So God's love is not merely

spoken. It's demonstrated. God gave his

son. That's the meaning of love.

That's the very measure of love. That's

the power of love.

When we sing the love of God,

we're singing about a love greater than

we can fully measure.

It's a love that reaches down to

sinners.

Love that offers forgiveness.

It's a love that calls out

of darkness.

Calls us into his marvelous light.

But the love of God is not only

something that we receive. It's

something that we also reflect.

John said, "Beloved, if God so loved us,

we also ought to love one another."

Friends, I want us to be reminded that

if we have received God's love, we must

in turn show God's love. And with that,

our next song that we'll be singing,

number 636.

What we were singing and reading from

these passages, think about love,

how love is really a mark of disciplehip

on

The night before his crucifixion, Jesus

told his disciples about this

commandment that he gives

that you love one another as I have

loved you. And I want you to notice the

standard. It says, "As I have loved

you." We got to hold to that, right?

Because Jesus does not leave love

undefied.

He shows us what love looks like. That's

what Paul was trying to impress

obviously in 1 Corinthians chapter 13

because

Jesus we know loved humbly. We know

Jesus loved sacrificially. He loved

truthfully. He loved patiently. He loved

enough to serve. He loved enough to die.

And what did he say? By this all will

know that you are my disciples. If

that's condition, if you have love one

another.

See, love is one of the identifying

marks of a disciple of Christ.

We shouldn't be known for bitterness,

arrogance,

harshness, or constant strife. That's

thing Paul was trying to get through the

Corinthians head. That's not the way of

Christ. That's not what a Christian's to

be. He says, "We're we're to be known by

love."

And biblical love does not abandon

truth. Even as Paul said in 1

1 Corinthians 13:6

Corinthians 13:6, "Love does not rejoice

in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth."

My friends, true love never celebrates

sin. True love never ignores God's work.

Truth must be spoken absolutely

and it must be lived in the spirit of

Christ.

Because I can tell you it is quite

possible to be doctrally correct and

spiritually unkind.

It's true.

It's possible to speak truth without

tenderness,

without gentleness. It's possible to

defend what is right while forgetting

the heart of the Savior.

That's why first Peter 13 draws us,

calls us higher.

How love suffers long in is kind.

Does not envy. Love does not parade

itself. Does not puffed up. Does not

behave rudely. Does not seek its own.

Does not provoke. Thinks no evil. Does

not rejoice in rejoices in the truth.

Bears all things. Believes all things.

Hopes all things. Endures all things.

Look at this. Love

never

fails.

Love never fails.

But that kind of love, that's not

weakness. You know what that is? That's

Christ likeness.

When we sing this next song,

oh to be like thee. We are not only

saying we love him with our words, we

are remembering that he first loved us.

And if we truly love him, that love must

shape the way we live.

Jesus said, "If you love me, keep my

commandments." John 14:2.

His love for Jesus

obeys Jesus.

Love for Jesus also learns to live

and to love the people that Jesus

lived and died for, ones that Jesus

loves.

Let's sing the first three verses of Oh,

to be like thee. That's from 97. Oh, to

be like thee.

And brother Mike Burden will lead us in

this song and then we'll have our

concluding remarks.

These three remain.

I want to bring the three together as we

close this evening.

Faith trusts God's word. Hope clings to

God's promises. And love reflects God's

heart.

I think it's quite apparent in what

we've looked at briefly because this

would be a long long lesson for that

matter in a series.

But those three belong together, don't

they?

Because faith without love can become

cold.

Hope without love can become

self-focused.

And love without faith and truth can

become shallow.

But when you put faith, hope and love,

they abide together. And the Christian

life becomes strong. It becomes

beautiful. It becomes exactly what God

wants it to be because faith says God

has spoken and I will trust him. And

hope says God has promised and I will

wait for him. Love says God has loved me

and I will live for him.

And what's interesting as I was think

about how to end this lesson, the sermon

in song.

I thought where do we see all three of

these?

I take us back to a point I made earlier

in passage. We see all of these at the

cross.

At the cross, faith sees the word of God

fulfilled.

At the cross,

hope sees salvation secured.

At the cross, love sees the heart of God

revealed.

You know, we should also see those three

in the church.

faithful congregation believing the word

of God, a hopeful congregation

looking toward heaven, and a loving

congregation caring for souls.

That's exactly what Corinth needed.

And that's the same thing we need today

because when life is uncertain, you know

what remains? Faith does. When the world

is dark, hope remains. When people are

difficult, love remains.

When earthly things pass away, these

three remain.

But the greatest of these is love.

These three meet in Christ.

I want us to gather these three words

around one place and that again the

cross of Christ and now abide faith hope

love these three but the greatest of

these is love.

These words are not abstract words.

They're not merely religious qualities

to admire from a distance. They are seen

most clearly in Christ.

Because at the cross,

faith sees that God keeps his word.

Every promise, every prophecy, every

shadow, every sacrifice, every picture

of redemption finds its meaning in

Christ.

at the cross. Hope with Jesus death and

resurrection. The Christian has hope

beyond guilt, beyond suffering, beyond

the grave itself and beyond this present

world.

At the cross, love.

God demonstrated his own love toward us

and that while we were yet sinners,

Christ died for us. Friends, that's why

at the cross, I believe, is such a

fitting song

to be the invitation.

The hymn brings us to the place where

mercy was great and grace was free.

It reminds us that the burden of sin can

be lifted, that darkness of guilt can be

removed, and the soul can find peace in

the crucified savior.

So this evening, we don't close by

simply remembering three words.

We close by looking to the Savior who

gives those words their actual meaning.

If you're not a disciple of Christ, a

Christian, the cross tonight calls you

to respond.

I think the Psalms and the scriptures

make it abundantly clear what those

words mean.

you repent of your sins,

confess Christ to be the son of God, and

be baptized to rise and walk in his life

as Romans 6 3 and 4 says,

because Jesus did not merely, he did not

die just for us to remember some type of

story. He died to save sinners. He shed

his blood so that we can have

forgiveness. He rose from the dead so we

can have life.

the gospel calls you tonight.

Maybe you're a Christian.

Perhaps this even you need to return to

the cross.

Maybe your faith has grown weak. Maybe

your hope has grown dim. And maybe your

love,

you need to remember and be restored.

So as we sing the song at the cross,

sing verse one, two, and four where the

cow hill will lead us in this invitation

song that we remind ourselves tonight

where our salvation begins, where our

confidence rest, and where the love of

God is most clearly seen. your sub

it's wonderful that we could be here on

this Lord's Day evening. Always

helps it go a lot smoother. Um, just a

continually praying for him and and

support him and be an encouragement to

him as he as he walks uh with us. We

walk in the Lord. Uh there's nothing

Father in heaven, we thank you for this

beautiful Lord's day and for all the

blessings that you've given us. And we

thank you for this opportunity to come

together and to close the day with

another worship service unto you.

is that labors here at Leaport,

for the stand that they've taken for the

truth over the years, and for the

congregation, this particular generation

of the congregation that meets here on a

regular basis. And we thank you for all

these individuals that are present here

this evening.

We thank you for the brethren who have

have participated and volunteered to

participate in this service, who have

led us in this way.

We thank you for each and every member

who has lifted up their voices in song

to admonish and to teach one another.

We thank you for the message of the

truth of the gospel that you've given to

us that we can have these three things,

the faith, the hope, the love, and

realizing that these three things abide,

but the greatest of these is in fact is

in fact love. We ask that you help this

congregation to grow in love and each

congregation that we may represent

whether it's here in Leaport or in other

places that we might be a member of.

Help us all to be the kind of people

that you would have us to be so that

they can see you living through us not

only as individuals but even as a church
