  1. Good evening.

  2. >> It's good to be here with you all this

  3. evening. It's uh it's been a good day.

  4. It's been a little crazy day for me, but

  5. it's all right. I'm here. I am glad I

  6. made it. I honestly thought I wasn't. Um

  7. my wife and I, we took our son camping

  8. this weekend and uh got in the car to to

  9. head back and lo and behold, my battery

  10. was dead. So, it was it was a little

  11. stressful getting here, but I'm glad I'm

  12. here and glad I could be with you all

  13. this evening. Um Kyle texted me on

  14. Wednesday night and asked me if I could

  15. come and and speak before you and I was

  16. like, "Four days, that's all I get?"

  17. No, thank I'm always thankful for the

  18. opportunity and and I uh I'm thankful

  19. for you all.

  20. Pressing on to maturity

  21. over at Southside.

  22. That is our theme for the year, our

  23. theme of pressing on to maturity.

  24. And and this evening I just want to at

  25. that with you and bring to you three

  26. quick points that can help cultivate

  27. maturity in our walk with God.

  28. Pressing on. First,

  29. mature Christianity is intentional. If

  30. you will turn over with me to the book

  31. of Hebrews, chapter 5.

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  32. Hebrews chapter 5

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  33. and we're going to begin reading in

  34. verse 12. But before I read, I just want

  35. you to notice that when the writer of

  36. Hebrews

  37. when he wrote this, he is concerned

  38. about the spiritual condition of the

  39. reader.

  40. Okay? The book is directed towards

  41. Christians that had been believers long

  42. enough that they should they should have

  43. been teaching others by now.

  44. But turns out that they're just

  45. struggling with just the ba the basics.

  46. So let's begin reading in verse 12 of

  47. chapter 5.

  48. For though by this time you ought to be

  49. teachers, you need someone to teach you

  50. again the basic principles of the

  51. oracles of God. You need milk, not solid

  52. food. For everyone who lives on milk is

  53. unskilled in the word word of

  54. righteousness since he is a child. But

  55. solid food is for the mature, for those

  56. who have their powers of discernment,

  57. trained by constant practice to

  58. distinguish good from evil.

  59. Therefore,

  60. let us leave elementary doctrine of

  61. Christ and go on to maturity, not laying

  62. again a foundation of repentance from

  63. dead works and of faith toward God.

  64. My son Garrett, who is

  65. almost two, we'll just put it that way.

  66. He turns two in September.

  67. Each and every day, we notice that he's

  68. just growing more and more independent.

  69. He he's getting into everything,

  70. but he's full of life and and and full

  71. of joy.

  72. And my wife and I, we've gone through so

  73. many stages of growth with him.

  74. so many memories I have and and so many

  75. first of the things that he's gone

  76. through. I love thinking about just, you

  77. know, the first time he crawled, the

  78. first time he walked,

  79. first time he said, "Da" for the first

  80. time.

  81. But when I reflect on his growth, it's

  82. also hard because I'm reminded that he's

  83. growing up. He's not a baby anymore, but

  84. he's a toddler.

  85. That's what babies are supposed to do.

  86. They're supposed to develop an age and

  87. grow up to become a blessing to the

  88. local church and to the Lord.

  89. They're to mature.

  90. Peter writes in 1 Peter chapter 2 of

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  91. verse two, "Like newborn infants, long

  92. for the pure spiritual milk, that by it

  93. you may grow up into salvation."

  94. When we obey the gospel and giving our

  95. lives to Christ in baptism,

  96. we begin as babes in Christ.

  97. babes who who start from ground zero in

  98. their knowledge and in their foundation.

  99. But God never intended for us to remain

  100. that way. God wants us to develop

  101. discernment,

  102. wisdom,

  103. and strength through consistent reading

  104. and studying in his word.

  105. And to develop these traits, we must be

  106. intentional about it.

  107. It isn't something that just happens,

  108. right? This is this is a daily act of

  109. self-examining ourselves.

  110. So, I want to ask you

  111. and I asked myself this,

  112. are we still needing to be spoonfed

  113. the most basic truths of the Bible?

  114. Or can you truly say that you're

  115. maturing in God's word?

  116. Hebrews chapter 6 and verse one. As we

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  117. just said, it doesn't say let us coast

  118. or let us hope.

  119. It says let us press, let us go on.

  120. And the term press on is defined as to

  121. continue steadily despite difficulties.

  122. And there will always be difficulties in

  123. this wicked world and we will never

  124. reach that peak of maturity.

  125. The King James version

  126. uses the word perfection in place of

  127. maturity.

  128. Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:48, "You

    Matthew 5:48

  129. therefore must be perfect as your

  130. heavenly father is perfect."

  131. But perfection is unachievable.

  132. That there was only one man

  133. perfect to ever walk this earth

  134. and that man died for you and for me.

  135. But just because it's unachievable,

  136. it doesn't mean that we can't be

  137. intentionable intentional

  138. about pressing on towards it.

  139. Are you intentional in your everyday

  140. life with pressing on to maturity?

  141. Are you intentional each day about your

  142. daily Bible reading, your prayer life,

  143. service to others,

  144. active obedience?

  145. Are you putting spiritual things above

  146. anything that is of this world?

  147. Where are you when the doors open to

  148. meet with the brethren?

  149. Do you make exceptions?

  150. Do you value worldly things above

  151. heavenly ones?

  152. Or are you intentional about keeping up

  153. with everything and everyone else in

  154. this world?

  155. It is time for a self-examination

  156. because mature Christianity is

  157. intentional.

  158. A secondly,

  159. mature Christianity spends its time

  160. strengthening others. Turn over with me

  161. to Titus chapter 2.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  162. Titus chapter 2.

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  163. Maturity isn't it isn't just for our own

  164. benefit, right? God builds us up so that

  165. we can edify and strengthen the body of

  166. Christ. So, if you will read Titus

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  167. chapter 2, we're going to read the first

  168. eight verses.

  169. But as for you, teach what accords with

  170. sound doctrine.

  171. Older men are to be sober minded,

  172. dignified,

  173. self-controlled, sound in faith, and in

  174. love, and in steadfastness.

  175. Older women likewise are to be reverent

  176. in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to

  177. too much wine. They are to teach what is

  178. good. And so train the young women to

  179. love their husbands and children, to be

  180. self-controlled, pure, working at home,

  181. kind, and submissive

  182. uh submissive to their own husbands that

  183. the word of God may not be reviled.

  184. Likewise, urge the younger men to be

  185. self-controlled.

  186. Show yourself in all respects to be a

  187. model of good works. And in your

  188. teaching, show integrity, dignity, and

  189. sound speech that cannot be condemned so

  190. that an opponent may be put to shame,

  191. having nothing evil to say about us.

  192. Paul also writes in second Timothy, he

  193. says, "And what you have heard from me

  194. in the presence of many witnesses and

  195. trust to faithful men who will be able

  196. to teach others also."

  197. But sure Christians teach sound

  198. doctrine.

  199. They model godly living and they invest

  200. in a younger generation.

  201. We need to have older men and women who

  202. are thriving in the faith.

  203. Men and women who are encouraging the

  204. young and strengthening the weak.

  205. We don't need to look down on someone

  206. who is struggling. We We need to pick

  207. them up.

  208. We're called to bear their burdens and

  209. to help them grow in their faith.

  210. about three weekends ago,

  211. the men at Southside, we we always have

  212. an opportunity twice a year to meet up

  213. for for a men's breakfast that's funded

  214. by some of the individuals and and

  215. organize so that we can do this very

  216. thing so that the older men can teach

  217. the younger men.

  218. It is a chance for the young men to just

  219. sit at the table with older men and

  220. listen to them and listen to their

  221. knowledge and their wisdom on a certain

  222. subject.

  223. Let me tell you, we need more of this.

  224. We need more of it in every congregation

  225. with men and women so that the younger

  226. people can sit with the older and learn.

  227. Being a mature Christian and being a

  228. mature church, it it doesn't mean that

  229. we won't go without problems, but it it

  230. does mean that we will press on

  231. and that we will help others to do the

  232. same even in the struggles and trials of

  233. our own lives.

  234. Mature Christianity, it spends time

  235. strengthening others.

  236. And third, and finally, mature

  237. Christianity is keeping your eyes

  238. focused on Jesus.

  239. Turn back over to Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  240. Hebrews chapter 12, and read the first

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  241. three verses with me.

  242. Hebrews 12, beginning in verse one.

  243. Therefore,

  244. since we are surrounded by so great a

  245. cloud of witnesses, let us also lay

  246. aside every weight and sin which clings

  247. so closely. And let us run with

  248. endurance the race that is set before

  249. us. Looking to Jesus, the founder and

  250. perfector of our faith, who for the for

  251. the joy that was set before him endured

  252. the cross, despising the shame, and is

  253. seated at the right hand of the throne

  254. of God. Consider him who endured from

  255. sinners such hostility against himself

  256. so that you may not grow weary or

  257. faint-hearted.

  258. The mature believer has has learned to

  259. fix their eyes on Jesus.

  260. No matter what, when the trials come,

  261. when temptations arise, and when the

  262. world is pulling at us, we will look to

  263. Christ.

  264. There's a song by Praise and Harmony

  265. called The Goodness of God.

  266. And I don't know if you've ever heard

  267. that song. If you haven't, I highly

  268. recommend it. But it is so powerful in

  269. so many ways.

  270. And I just want to read the chorus to

  271. that song.

  272. And the chorus reads,

  273. "Because all my life you have been

  274. faithful, and all my life you have been

  275. so, so good.

  276. With every breath that I am able,

  277. I will sing the goodness of God."

  278. And as that song goes on, it comes to

  279. the bridge of the song. And the bridge

  280. says, "Your goodness is running after.

  281. It's running after me.

  282. With my life laid down, I surrender now.

  283. I give you everything, oh Lord.

  284. It's easy to to sing that song or to

  285. read those words when everything's going

  286. right, when everything is good, nothing

  287. is going wrong, everything is

  288. is perfect.

  289. It's easy to sing those words,

  290. but what about when everything's going

  291. wrong?

  292. What about when Satan is throwing

  293. everything at you and you feel like you

  294. can't escape?

  295. What will you do?

  296. Are you mature enough

  297. to believe in those words,

  298. to believe in your your goodness is

  299. running after me?

  300. My sister-in-law wrote a book called If

  301. Not, Is He Still Good?

  302. And it's a study of God's goodness

  303. through the lens of a miscarriage.

  304. And after reading it, I all I could

  305. think to myself was, how is she still

  306. able

  307. to sing his praises?

  308. How could something so crushing

  309. as several miscarriages

  310. not make her give up hope?

  311. It was God

  312. and it was his goodness that allowed her

  313. to remain hopeful.

  314. And as that song goes on,

  315. the goodness of God was running after my

  316. sister-in-law.

  317. The goodness of God that's running after

  318. you.

  319. No matter the situation, no matter the

  320. trial, he is there.

  321. He is always there.

  322. The psalmist writes in Psalm 73 and

  323. verse 28, "But for me it is good to be

  324. near God. I have made the Lord God my

  325. refuge that I may tell of all of your

  326. works."

  327. In all situations, we must be looking to

  328. Jesus.

  329. As the Hebrew writer writes,

  330. "Mature Christianity is keeping your

  331. eyes focused on Jesus.

  332. Tonight we've looked at what mature

  333. Christianity looks like. Mature

  334. Christianity is intentional,

  335. spends time strengthening others,

  336. and it has its eyes fixed on Jesus.

  337. If you aren't a Christian and you want

  338. to start your journey with the Lord,

  339. well, now is the time to come and

  340. confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior

  341. and be baptized for the forgiveness of

  342. your sins.

  343. And our walk with Christ, it starts with

  344. baptism, but it doesn't end there.

  345. So this walk is continual.

  346. We are constantly working to grow in the

  347. Lord and Christ calls you to now to come

  348. and start your journey with him.

  349. Or maybe you're a child of God and you

  350. need prayers of strength to grow more

  351. mature in your walk.

  352. Well, we're here and ready to pray for

  353. you. Because now is the time. Don't

  354. delay.
