  1. In your Bibles, I would encourage you to

  2. go to 1 Kings chapter 21. 1 Kings

1 Kings 21 chapter mention 1 Kings 21 chapter mention

  3. chapter 21.

  4. We are continuing our our Sunday evening

  5. lessons we do from time to time that is

  6. uh

  7. connected to what our kids are learning

  8. in their Bible classes. And one of the

  9. blessings of doing this is that uh we

  10. are reminded uh

  11. that children's Bible lessons are not

  12. childish truths. And as we've noted in

  13. previous lessons, uh the language may be

  14. simple, the pictures may be colorful,

  15. uh the memory verses, they they may be

  16. short, but the truth is deep enough

  17. to search every heart in this room.

  18. Well, recently, our children were

  19. studying a powerful account from the Old

  20. Testament, Ahab and Naboth's vineyard.

  21. And as I've entitled this lesson, The

  22. Vineyard Next Door. The vineyard next

  23. door. Now, at first glance, it may

  24. it may seem uh like a simple story. You

  25. know, sometimes we might summarize some

  26. of this and say, "Well, you know, a king

  27. wanted a vineyard, a man refused to sell

  28. it, uh and trouble followed." Uh but

  29. like so many biblical accounts,

  30. uh there's more here than first meets

  31. the eye. Uh because really, when you get

  32. down to it, this this is not a merely a

  33. story about land, okay? Um

  34. it's a story about contentment, it's a

  35. story about covetousness, it's a story

  36. about integrity, it's a story about the

  37. abuse of power, it's a story about God

  38. seeing what men try to hide.

  39. And perhaps one of the most sobering

  40. truths

  41. in this account is

  42. Ahab was a king,

  43. but he was ruled by his desires.

  44. Naboth

  45. was a common man,

  46. but he was governed by God. And I

  47. believe that's worth our attention.

  48. Because our children may learn names,

  49. right? Ahab and Jezebel and Naboth and

  50. Elijah, they may learn that Naboth, you

  51. know, or that Ahab wanted Naboth's

  52. vineyard. They may learn that Jezebel

  53. arranged Naboth's death. They may learn

  54. that Elijah confronted Ahab with God's

  55. judgment. You know, those right there

  56. are some things that they're learning.

  57. But when you again think about the deep

  58. spiritual lessons here, because the sins

  59. that we're going to look at in 1 Kings

  60. 21, the sins in this chapter are not

  61. ancient sins only.

  62. They still live in human hearts today.

  63. Ahab still teaches us what happens when

  64. a person cannot accept being told no.

  65. Naboth still teaches us

  66. what it means to stand on conviction.

  67. Jezebel still teaches us the danger of

  68. using influence for evil.

  69. And Elijah still teaches us that God's

  70. word will confront sin

  71. even when sin

  72. sits on a throne.

  73. So, let's walk through this account

  74. together and let's draw out those

  75. spiritual applications for our lives

  76. this evening.

  77. Well, let's talk about how Ahab. Ahab

  78. had much, but he wanted more, okay? You

  79. can already see the issue there in that

  80. in that very title.

  81. Look at verse 1, 1 Kings 21:1. Look at

    1 Kings 21:1

  82. it from God's word here. And it came to

  83. pass after these things that Naboth the

  84. Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in

  85. Jezreel next to the palace of Ahab, king

  86. of Samaria. Uh

  87. now,

  88. that little phrase that that you that

  89. you're seeing there,

  90. uh

  91. depending on the translation that you

  92. may have, you might not just see next to

  93. the palace. It may have the wording hard

  94. by the palace of Ahab, uh king of

  95. Samaria. And I I want to just kind of

  96. make I want us to understand we're

  97. looking at this that that that

  98. little phrase matters because Naboth's

  99. uh vineyard was close

  100. to Ahab's palace.

  101. So, when you think about it, well, of

  102. course Ahab could see it. Uh perhaps he

  103. might have passed by it many times. Uh

  104. perhaps every time he looked out, he

  105. thought, "Well, that would be a nice

  106. place for an herb garden, you know?"

  107. May- maybe that's it.

  108. But so, Ahab said to Naboth in verse

  109. two,

  110. "Uh give me your vineyard that I may

  111. have it for a vegetable garden because

  112. it is near next to my house, and for it

  113. I will give you a vineyard better than

  114. it, or if it seems good to you, I will

  115. give you its worth in money."

  116. Now, you know, we read that, and I would

  117. say uh and I've read this so many times

  118. in my life and studied it. I've done

  119. lessons and after lesson after lesson on

  120. this.

  121. And you know, when you first read that,

  122. um

  123. on the surface, Ahab's offer really

  124. doesn't seem unreasonable. I mean, does

  125. it? I mean, does it seem unreasonable?

  126. No. He He offered to give Naboth a

  127. better vineyard

  128. or pay him its value in money.

  129. Isn't that what you see?

  130. Where's the problem then?

  131. Well,

  132. the problem was not merely that Ahab

  133. asked. The problem was what happened in

  134. his heart when Naboth said, "No."

  135. Naboth answered, verse three,

  136. "The Lord forbid that I should give the

  137. inheritance of my fathers to you.

  138. Now, I want us to notice something.

  139. Naboth wasn't being difficult.

  140. Um

  141. I don't believe he was being rude.

  142. He was not simply attached

  143. to family property in a sentimental way.

  144. Naboth understood that the land

  145. inheritance in Israel was tied to God's

  146. law and God's promises. I don't know if

  147. you ever recognized that or looked at

  148. that.

  149. Uh the land ultimately belonged to God

  150. and family inheritance were were not to

  151. be treated as disposable possessions.

  152. You see that? And this actually takes

  153. you back to a passage in Leviticus

    Leviticus 25 chapter mention

  154. chapter 25

  155. and verse 23.

  156. Leviticus 25 and verse 23. The land

  157. shall not be sold permanently for the

  158. land is mine, for you are strangers and

  159. sojourners with me.

  160. So, when you even look back at it and

  161. kind of understand what what what Naboth

  162. is saying, "The Lord forbid that I

  163. should give the inheritance of my

  164. fathers to you." There's a connection

  165. here, okay? Uh Naboth's refusal to

  166. sell

  167. the property to Ahab or or or or barter

  168. or whatever you want to call it

  169. was spiritual before it was personal. He

  170. was saying in effect, "Ahab, I I cannot

  171. sell what God has entrusted to my

  172. family. I can't do that."

  173. You know, when I read that, the fact is,

  174. friends, that's called conviction.

  175. That's what that is.

  176. But Ahab doesn't take that very well,

  177. does he? It doesn't matter if if uh

  178. Naboth has this very good reasoning

  179. behind it. What what bothers

  180. Na- uh Ahab

  181. Well,

  182. he was told no.

  183. And, you know, somebody who's in his

  184. position and has the pride issue that he

  185. has,

  186. well,

  187. he don't take no very lightly, does he?

  188. So, Ahab went to his house sullen and

  189. displeased. We call that pouting, okay?

  190. That's what That's what I'm looking at.

  191. I can just see his lip kind of sticking

  192. out, you know, like a child. Uh because

  193. of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite

  194. has spoken to him, for he had said, "I

  195. will not give you the inheritance of my

  196. fathers." And he lay down on his bed,

  197. and he turned away his face and wouldn't

  198. and would eat no food.

  199. Man,

  200. I I think about it. A grown man lying on

  201. his bed pouting because he didn't get

  202. what he wanted, right? Uh

  203. I mean, now let's just stop and think

  204. about it. Ahab had a palace. Ahab had

  205. position. Ahab had wealth. Ahab had

  206. authority. Ahab Ahab had more than most

  207. people would imagine.

  208. But he didn't have Naboth's vineyard,

  209. did he?

  210. And because he didn't have that,

  211. what he did have was not enough.

  212. And friends, that's the very nature of

  213. covetousness. Y'all know?

  214. Because covetousness does not say, "I

  215. have nothing." That's not what

  216. covetousness says. Covetousness says,

  217. "What I have is not enough as long as

  218. someone has what I want."

  219. That's covetousness.

  220. We know in the New Testament Jesus

  221. warned about this, didn't he?

  222. Luke 12 and verse 15, Jesus uh he he

  223. said to them, "Take heed and beware of

  224. covetousness, for one's life does not

  225. consist in the abundance of the things

  226. he possesses."

  227. So, really when you get down to it,

  228. Ahab's problem was not a vineyard

  229. problem.

  230. Okay? It's not a vineyard problem. It's

  231. a heart problem.

  232. That's what it is.

  233. Now, this is where we

  234. you know, kind of we focus on Ahab, and

  235. we kind of like, "Oh, Ahab, Ahab, Ahab."

  236. What's wrong with you, Ahab?

  237. Well, let's let's put the mirror on

  238. ourselves, okay?

  239. Uh this is where we got to examine

  240. ourselves, and we got to ask ourselves

  241. some questions.

  242. I mean, how often do we let what we do

  243. not have rob us of gratitude for what

  244. God has already given?

  245. Uh

  246. how often do we become restless because

  247. someone else has something that we want,

  248. something else we desire?

  249. How often do we act as as though peace

  250. will come, and I'll have happiness and

  251. all these things when we finally get

  252. that one more just one just one more

  253. just one more thing?

  254. One more purchase, one more position,

  255. one more compliment, one more

  256. opportunity, one more acre, one more

  257. vineyard.

  258. It's always one more, isn't it?

  259. It's always just one more.

  260. That's what's in the mind.

  261. And that's where the deceit comes in.

  262. But what the scriptures make abundantly

  263. clear,

  264. contentment never grows in a heart

  265. that's ruled by covetousness.

  266. Never.

  267. That's why Paul told Timothy in 1

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  268. Timothy chapter 6 and verse 6, "Now

  269. godliness with contentment is what?"

  270. Great

  271. gain.

  272. Ahab had earthly gain

  273. without godliness.

  274. And therefore,

  275. he didn't have what?

  276. He didn't have contentment.

  277. And that's the way it works.

  278. That's what the Bible reveals so

  279. so much.

  280. Well, let's talk about Naboth now. He

  281. you know, he shows us the courage of

  282. conviction. I mentioned that a moment

  283. ago about how he was convicted about not

  284. selling. And And Naboth only speaks

  285. really, when you look at this entire

  286. account, he he really only speaks

  287. one sentence

  288. in the in the account.

  289. You ever You ever notice that? That's

  290. all he That's all That's all that's

  291. recorded of Naboth

  292. is I'm not selling.

  293. That was it.

  294. That's what it says there in verse 3.

  295. So, Naboth stood before a king, said

  296. this sentence. He said, "No."

  297. And I And I I think we we we have to

  298. give Naboth some credit here because

  299. that's not an easy thing to be standing

  300. before a king and telling a king, "No."

  301. So, really, when we kind of play this

  302. back, would it been easier for him to

  303. compromise?

  304. Yeah.

  305. It'd been easier.

  306. It would've been easier to reason. Let's

  307. reason it out. Well, he is a king. Well,

  308. see See, we just kind of moved that one

  309. a little bit, didn't we?

  310. Uh How about it would've been easier to

  311. say, "Well, maybe God will understand."

  312. What about that one?

  313. Or Or maybe he said, "It'd been easier

  314. to take the money and just avoid

  315. trouble."

  316. But again, Naboth understood something

  317. important. You know what that is? Some

  318. things are not for sale.

  319. Some things are not for sale.

  320. His inheritance was not for sale, his

  321. conscience was not for sale, his

  322. obedience to God was not for sale. And

  323. And you know, that's the lesson our

  324. children need. Absolutely.

  325. As children, they need to learn that

  326. lesson, but I'll tell you something now,

  327. it's a lesson that adults need, too.

  328. There are still things that must not be

  329. for sale.

  330. Truth

  331. is not for sale.

  332. You remember the proverb writer it about

  333. that. Buy the truth and sell it what?

  334. Sell it not.

  335. Conviction, that's not for sale.

  336. Faithfulness, that's not for sale.

  337. Worship according to God's word, that's

  338. not for sale. Our influence, not for

  339. sale. Our children's souls are not for

  340. sale and the church identity is not for

  341. sale. Now, the world may offer a trade.

  342. The world may say, "Well, you give me

  343. your convictions and and and I will give

  344. you comfort." You know, those types of

  345. thing. "Give me your standards and I

  346. will give you acceptance. Give me your

  347. faithfulness and I will give you

  348. popularity. You give me your conscience

  349. and I will give you success." You see,

  350. we can keep going, couldn't we?

  351. Is that not what society does all the

  352. time?

  353. But Naboth reminds us something very

  354. powerful here, that there are times when

  355. the faithful answer must be, "The Lord

  356. forbid that I."

  357. The Lord forbid that I.

  358. That's a phrase that really ought to

  359. live in our hearts.

  360. When temptation says, "Well, here's a

  361. shortcut."

  362. The Lord forbid it.

  363. The world ask us to compromise truth.

  364. Well,

  365. the Lord forbid it.

  366. When bitterness ask for a home in our

  367. hearts,

  368. the Lord forbid it.

  369. When dishonesty seems profitable, the

  370. Lord forbid it.

  371. When sin says, "Just this once."

  372. The Lord forbid it.

  373. Naboth was not powerful in the eyes of

  374. men, friends.

  375. But he was faithful in the eyes of God.

  376. And that

  377. is greater.

  378. Thirdly,

  379. let's talk about Jezebel.

  380. Well, you know, we said we know Jezebel,

  381. don't we?

  382. Jezebel shows the danger of ungodly

  383. influence. There's so many lessons in

  384. this 1 Kings 21. Ah.

  385. Okay, so Ahab, her husband, he comes

  386. home pouting, doesn't he?

  387. I I sometimes picture him just throwing

  388. himself on the bed.

  389. And Jezebel asks him, you know, "W- Why

  390. are you so sad?"

  391. We might say, "What's wrong?"

  392. You know.

  393. And of course Ahab, he explained that

  394. Naboth would not give him the vineyard.

  395. And Jezebel, look at verse 7. Jezebel

  396. his wife said to him, "You now exercise

  397. authority over Israel. Arise, eat food,

  398. and let your heart be cheerful. I will

  399. give you the vineyard of Naboth the

  400. Jezreelite." Well, I said she's sweet.

  401. Now,

  402. this is important.

  403. What Jezebel

  404. doesn't do.

  405. Jezebel did not rebuke Ahab's

  406. covetousness.

  407. She did not say,

  408. "You know, honey, you're the king and

  409. that's enough."

  410. Uh she didn't say,

  411. "You know, Naboth is actually obeying

  412. God's law."

  413. She doesn't say, "Well, you know, you

  414. should just be respectful. That's, you

  415. know, his vineyard and

  416. inheritance and

  417. right?" That sounds That sounds good,

  418. don't it?

  419. Kind of what she should have said.

  420. Instead, she she was feeding, you know,

  421. we call it's kind of just fueling the

  422. fire here.

  423. She was feeding his sin, and that's the

  424. danger of ungodly influence, friends.

  425. Ahab's desire was sinful enough, but

  426. Jezebel though, Jezebel gave his desire

  427. a plan. She took his covetousness and

  428. turned it into conspiracy.

  429. Oh, no.

  430. I mean, she wrote letters in Ahab's name

  431. that the scripture goes on to say, she

  432. sealed them with his seal

  433. and arranged for false witnesses to

  434. accuse Naboth.

  435. Ooh, being married to that woman. How

  436. about that?

  437. She said, "I'll get I will give you the

  438. revenge." And she was she was she had

  439. That's what she going to do.

  440. The accusation was that Naboth had

  441. blasphemed God and the king.

  442. Then Naboth was taken out and he was

  443. stoned to death.

  444. Now, you know, I've

  445. Can't you look at it? You say, "That's

  446. wicked on every level."

  447. Every level.

  448. I mean, listen.

  449. Misuse of authority, corruption of

  450. justice, false testimony, it was murder

  451. disguised as righteousness.

  452. And after Naboth was dead, Jezebel told

  453. Ahab, here it comes. And it came to

  454. pass, verse 15, when Jezebel heard that

  455. Naboth had been stoned and was dead,

  456. that Jezebel said to Ahab, "Arise, take

  457. possession of the vineyard

  458. of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he

  459. refused to give you for money, for

  460. Naboth is not alive, but dead."

  461. You know, I've read that. It just sent a

  462. chill down my spine.

  463. What a sobering lesson here. You know

  464. what the sobering lesson is? Sin rarely

  465. travels alone.

  466. Sin rarely travels alone.

  467. What What mean by that?

  468. If you're following the thread through

  469. this passage, you're going to see it

  470. very loud and clear.

  471. Covetousness

  472. led to resentment. See, sin rarely

  473. travels alone. You'll see how they those

  474. are companions there, aren't they?

  475. Covetousness led to resentment.

  476. Resentment opened the door to

  477. manipulation. Manipulation produced

  478. lies. Lies led to murder. And murder led

  479. to theft. And theft brought judgment.

  480. See, sin rarely travels alone.

  481. As that James described in James

    James 1:14–15

  482. 1:14-15,

  483. "But each one is tempted when he is

  484. drawn away by his own desires and

  485. enticed. Then when desire has conceived,

  486. it gives birth to sin. And sin, when

  487. it's full grown, brings forth death."

  488. Ahab wanted a vineyard,

  489. but sin did not stop at wanting. Sin

  490. kept growing until an innocent man was

  491. dead.

  492. That's why we can't treat sinful desire

  493. lightly. We can't do that.

  494. Cuz that's what Again, this is where

  495. that

  496. try to justify, you know, we try to

  497. justify things, you know, because

  498. sometimes we'll excuse the early stages

  499. of sin because we think, "Well, I have

  500. not acted on it yet."

  501. You got to watch that three-letter word

  502. yet is dangerous.

  503. But if a sinful desire is welcomed and

  504. it's protected, it's fed, and justified,

  505. I can tell you it's not going to stay

  506. small. It's going to grow.

  507. Cuz Ahab shows us the danger of a heart

  508. that wants what it should not have.

  509. Jezebel shows us the danger of

  510. surrounding ourselves with people who

  511. help us get what God has forbidden.

  512. We say our circle. You know, who's in

  513. our circle? Inner circle, outer circle,

  514. you know, think think about that in that

  515. kind of sense.

  516. We need people in our lives in our

  517. circle who will help us obey God.

  518. Not help us excuse sin.

  519. Because I'll tell you a good friend will

  520. not help you take neighbor's vineyard.

  521. A godly spouse will not help you cover

  522. up wrongdoing.

  523. A faithful brother or sister will not

  524. flatter you while your heart drifts from

  525. God.

  526. Proverbs 27 and verse 6 says, "Faithful

  527. are the wounds of a friend, but the

  528. kisses of an enemy are deceitful."

  529. Wow.

  530. See, a lot of times we say, "Oh, I don't

  531. like the the kisses." We don't like that

  532. part better than we like the wounds

  533. part, don't we?

  534. There's a lot of wisdom here, right? The

  535. wisdom of Proverbs 27 and verse 6.

  536. "Faithful are the wounds of a friend,

  537. but the kisses of an enemy are

  538. deceitful."

  539. Think about Jezebel's words. Jezebel's

  540. words may have comforted Ahab,

  541. but they led him deeper in sin.

  542. We have to be quite careful

  543. about what we're choosing.

  544. Who we're choosing to be around.

  545. Who is in our inner circle?

  546. We got to take some time and evaluate

  547. that in our lives.

  548. And it's not just for kids to think

  549. about who's their circle of friends, and

  550. who they're going to be picking for

  551. spouses, and those types of things.

  552. Friends, it carries This goes throughout

  553. our entire adulthood even.

  554. We have to be careful.

  555. Well, the fact is from the text Naboth

  556. was treated unjustly.

  557. But God saw everything.

  558. I think one of the hard parts of of this

  559. account is that Naboth dies.

  560. You know, we we would like for this

  561. story to to be different.

  562. You know,

  563. it's like wait a second, he was treated

  564. unjustly and he's he he died.

  565. For doing the right thing.

  566. He did the right thing and he suffered.

  567. He told the truth and the lies were told

  568. about him. He honored God and wicked

  569. people used God's name to destroy him.

  570. You know, that bothers me. It It does

  571. and I'm sure it bothers you.

  572. Because we want justice to happen

  573. immediately. We want the righteous

  574. protected and the wicked stopped before

  575. they do damage.

  576. We still hold to that principle, don't

  577. we?

  578. But what 1 Kings 21 reminds us that

  579. sometimes the righteous suffer at the

  580. hands of the wicked.

  581. Go read Psalms.

  582. Psalms has a lot prayers regarding the

  583. wicked who are flourishing

  584. while the righteous

  585. are downtrodden.

  586. You see,

  587. Naboth's story is not the only story

  588. like this in scripture though. Y'all

  589. know that?

  590. Joseph was lied about.

  591. David was hunted.

  592. Jeremiah was rejected. Daniel was

  593. plotted against. Stephen was stoned.

  594. Paul was beaten and imprisoned.

  595. But you know, I was thinking

  596. about some similarities here.

  597. Naboth said it was not for sale.

  598. He was treated unjustly.

  599. He died.

  600. And I thought about how he was falsely

  601. accused.

  602. You know, Jesus Christ

  603. was falsely accused. He was condemned

  604. and he was crucified.

  605. The presence of injustice

  606. does not mean God is absent.

  607. It's one of the greatest lessons of this

  608. chapter.

  609. Naboth died and Ahab went down to take

  610. possession of the vineyard. And it may

  611. have looked like evil had won.

  612. But God spoke to Elijah in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 21:18

  613. 21:18, "Arise, go down to meet Ahab,

  614. king of Israel, who lives in Samaria.

  615. There he is in the vineyard of Naboth,

  616. where he has gone down to take

  617. possession of it." Ooh. What does that

  618. say to you? God saw it.

  619. God saw Ahab. God saw Jezebel. God saw

  620. the letters. God saw the false

  621. witnesses. God saw Naboth's blood. God

  622. saw the stolen vineyard. Nothing was

  623. hidden from God.

  624. Hebrews 4:13 gives us this reminder.

    Hebrews 4:13

  625. Look at it. Hebrews 4:13. And there is

    Hebrews 4:13

  626. no creature hidden from his sight, but

  627. all things are naked and open to the

  628. eyes of him to whom we must give

  629. account.

  630. Now, I'll tell you that truth right

  631. there.

  632. That should comfort the righteous

  633. and sober the wicked.

  634. Cuz friends, if we're suffering

  635. unjustly, God sees it.

  636. If we've been mis- misrepresented, God

  637. sees it.

  638. If you've tried to do right and paid a

  639. price for it, God saw it. He sees it. If

  640. others know never know the full story,

  641. God sees.

  642. But also, if a person is hiding in sin,

  643. God sees that, too.

  644. If someone has wronged another and and

  645. pretended innocent, God sees that, too.

  646. If someone has used power and position

  647. and influence to harm another, God sees

  648. that, too. Ahab may have taken

  649. possession of Naboth's vineyard,

  650. but he could not take possession

  651. of it without

  652. meeting the word of God.

  653. Oh, and then Elijah.

  654. He shows us that God's word must

  655. confront sin.

  656. Look at verse 19. God sent Elijah to

  657. Ahab, and there's a difficult message

  658. that he took to Ahab. Look at verse 19.

  659. You shall speak to him saying, "Thus

  660. says the Lord, have you murdered and

  661. also taken possession?"

  662. And you shall speak to him saying, "Thus

  663. says the Lord, in the place where dogs

  664. licked the blood of Naboth, dogs shall

  665. lick your blood,

  666. even yours."

  667. Ooh.

  668. That's That's a That's piercing.

  669. Some people say, "Well, wait a second.

  670. Hold on."

  671. This is where This is where

  672. justification comes in.

  673. You know, reading this passage,

  674. >> [clears throat]

  675. >> I don't find anywheres where Ahab

  676. personally threw the stones. Y'all see

  677. that anywheres?

  678. Mhm.

  679. But although Ahab may have not

  680. personally thrown the stones

  681. where Naboth was murdered and killed,

  682. he was responsible.

  683. He benefited from evil.

  684. He accepted what sin provided.

  685. He took possession of what had been

  686. obtained through blood.

  687. See, that That's That's even laws today

  688. in our books.

  689. Pretty interesting, isn't it?

  690. You may not have done throwing the

  691. stone,

  692. but there's still responsibility

  693. in benefiting and accepting.

  694. Ahab said to Elijah in verse 20, look

  695. what he says, "Have you found me, oh my

  696. enemy?"

  697. See, Ahab called Elijah his enemy.

  698. But here's the fact, Elijah was not

  699. Ahab's enemy. Elijah was telling Ahab

  700. the truth. Sometimes people uh mistake

  701. the one who tells the truth uh for the

  702. enemy, but the real enemy is not the

  703. word of God. The real enemy is sin.

  704. And when God's word exposes us, we have

  705. a choice. And that choice is we can

  706. resent the messenger or we can repent

  707. before God.

  708. See, Paul dealt with this in Galatians

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  709. chapter 4 and verse 16. What he say?

  710. "Have I therefore become your enemy

  711. because I tell you the truth?"

  712. See, the preacher is not the enemy when

  713. he preaches the truth.

  714. The elder is not the enemy when

  715. he warns with scripture.

  716. The parent is not the enemy when they

  717. correct a child.

  718. The brother or sister is not the enemy

  719. when they lovingly call us back.

  720. God's word confronts sin because God

  721. loves souls.

  722. Now, the message is certainly severe.

  723. There's no doubt about that.

  724. Elijah's message was severe. Judgment

  725. would come upon Ahab's house. Jezebel

  726. would also face judgment. Sin had

  727. consequences. You know, sin,

  728. consequences. What's Romans 6:23 say

    Romans 6:23

  729. about sin?

  730. For the wages of sin is death, but the

  731. gift of God is eternal life in Christ

  732. Jesus our Lord.

  733. Where do we start in this lesson? Ahab

  734. wanted a vineyard.

  735. But here we are

  736. what he truly received was judgement.

  737. And that is always how sin works.

  738. It promises satisfaction

  739. but it pays in sorrow.

  740. Well,

  741. Ahab

  742. here

  743. reminds us that sin has consequences

  744. even when mercy is shown. You know,

  745. sometimes we look at these scriptures

  746. and

  747. you know, you go down to verse 27, after

  748. Elijah's message, something surprising

  749. happened. Y'all remember what happened?

  750. So it was when Ahab heard those words

  751. that he tore his clothes and put

  752. sackcloth on his body and fasted lay in

  753. sackcloth and went about mourning.

  754. You know,

  755. that that was moving to Ahab. Ahab was

  756. upset, wasn't he?

  757. Verse 27 says,

  758. Now now we know Ahab was a wicked king.

  759. I mean, verse 25, there was no one like

  760. Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness

  761. in the sight of the Lord because Jezebel

  762. his wife stirred him up.

  763. And yet here you have Ahab who

  764. well, humbles himself.

  765. That's the very thought we get in verse

  766. 29.

  767. See how Ahab has humbled himself before

  768. me? This is what the Lord saying to

  769. Elijah.

  770. Because he has humbled himself before

  771. me, I will not bring the calamity in his

  772. days, in the days of his son, I'll bring

  773. calamity on his house. Now,

  774. this is something very remarkable cuz

  775. God is you know, he's not eager to

  776. destroy.

  777. God takes notice when one humbles

  778. himself and and God delayed the judgment

  779. during Ahab's days is what we find. So,

  780. this does teach us something about the

  781. mercy of God that even a wicked man like

  782. Ahab was not ignored when he humbled

  783. himself

  784. before the Lord.

  785. But, there's something else here

  786. that we don't need to miss.

  787. That although judgment was delayed, the

  788. consequences still remained, didn't it?

  789. What an important truth.

  790. God forgives, but sin still leaves

  791. scars.

  792. God shows mercy,

  793. but sin still produces consequences.

  794. God may pardon the soul, but the damage

  795. of sin may still affect families,

  796. relationships,

  797. influence, and friends' future

  798. generations.

  799. David is a prime example. David was

  800. forgiven after his sin with Bathsheba,

  801. but consequences still came to his

  802. house.

  803. So, we should never think lightly of sin

  804. and say, "Well, I can always repent

  805. later."

  806. Yes, God's merciful and yes, God

  807. forgives and yes, the blood of Christ is

  808. powerful enough to cleanse every sin,

  809. but sin

  810. is never harmless.

  811. Ahab's temporary

  812. humility reminds us that God sees

  813. repentance,

  814. but his story also

  815. reminds us not to waste our lives in

  816. rebellion

  817. and only humble ourselves when

  818. judgment's at the door.

  819. The better path is to humble ourselves

  820. now. What's James 4:10 say? Humble

    James 4:10

  821. yourselves in the sight of the Lord and

  822. he will lift you up.

  823. We need to have that humility always.

  824. Well,

  825. the vineyard that we've been talking

  826. about here as well points us to our

  827. spiritual inheritance.

  828. You know, Naboth's vineyard was his

  829. inheritance, wasn't it?

  830. He would not sell it because it had been

  831. entrusted to him.

  832. And I think that's a powerful

  833. application that we can draw from. As we

  834. also have an inheritance, something that

  835. Peter talks about in 1 Peter 1 and

  836. verses 3 and 4.

  837. Blessed be the God and Father of our

  838. Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his

  839. abundant mercy has begotten us again to

  840. a living hope through the resurrection

  841. of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an

  842. inheritance incorruptible and undefiled

  843. and that does not fade away, reserved in

  844. heaven for you.

  845. That's Christians he's talking about.

  846. Naboth, as we noted, would not surrender

  847. an earthly inheritance because of his

  848. reverence for God.

  849. And the question that's posed is how

  850. much more should we refuse to surrender

  851. our spiritual inheritance?

  852. We don't trade our soul for the world's

  853. vineyard, friends. We don't do it.

  854. Jesus said, Mark 8:36 and 37, "For what

    Mark 8:36

  855. will it profit a man if he gains the

  856. whole world and loses his own soul? Or

  857. what will a man give in exchange for his

  858. soul?"

  859. Oh, yeah, Ahab, he gained the vineyard,

  860. but he lost far more.

  861. And that's the tragedy

  862. of sin. It always costs more than it

  863. gives.

  864. A person may gain pleasure, but they'll

  865. lose purity.

  866. They may gain money, but they lose

  867. honesty.

  868. They may gain popularity, but they're

  869. going to lose conviction.

  870. They may gain revenge, but they're going

  871. to lose peace. And they may gain the

  872. world, but they're going to lose their

  873. soul.

  874. And that's Bible.

  875. Naboth's vineyard asks us what are what

  876. what are we willing to trade for our

  877. inheritance? What are we willing to

  878. trade?

  879. Would we trade faithfulness for

  880. convenience?

  881. Would we trade worship for recreation?

  882. Would we trade truth for acceptance?

  883. Would we trade the church's

  884. distinctiveness for popularity?

  885. Would we trade our children's spiritual

  886. future for worldly success? Would we do

  887. that?

  888. But Naboth has reminded us this evening

  889. in this study

  890. to simply be able to stand up and say

  891. with him, "The Lord forbid that I

  892. Lord forbid that I

  893. And may God help us

  894. say the same.

  895. As we bring the lesson to the close,

  896. I must mention yet again Christ

  897. who was the greater innocent one who was

  898. falsely accused.

  899. You know, as we read

  900. about Naboth, we cannot help but think

  901. forward to Jesus. You know, yes, Naboth

  902. and Jesus, they were both innocent.

  903. Naboth was falsely accused by wicked uh

  904. witnesses, and you know what? Jesus was,

  905. too.

  906. Naboth was condemned

  907. though he had done no wrong. You know

  908. what? Jesus was, too.

  909. Naboth was taken outside and killed, and

  910. Jesus himself suffered outside the gate.

  911. Naboth's death exposed the very

  912. wickedness of Ahab and Jezebel.

  913. Jesus' death exposed the wickedness of

  914. sin and the love of God.

  915. But there is a great difference.

  916. Yep, Naboth's blood cried out

  917. for

  918. for justice.

  919. But Jesus' blood offers mercy. Hebrews

  920. 12 and verse 24 says, "To Jesus, the

  921. mediator of the new covenant, and to the

  922. blood of sprinkling that speaks better

  923. things than that of Abel."

  924. The blood of Christ speaks better

  925. things, friends.

  926. It speaks forgiveness, it speaks

  927. redemption, it speaks reconciliation, it

  928. speaks hope.

  929. Ahab took a vineyard through the death

  930. of an innocent man, but through the

  931. death of the innocent Son of God,

  932. we are offered entrance into the true

  933. vineyard of God's grace. And you may

  934. have thought, "DJ's going to bring John

  935. 15 and verse 1." If you thought that,

  936. you're right.

  937. Jesus said, "I am the true vine,

  938. and my father is the vine dresser."

  939. The true vineyard of God's grace. What a

  940. wonderful thing.

  941. The question that Jesus goes on in that

  942. very passage, John 15, is we have to

  943. answer is, "Will we truly abide in him?"

  944. And that's the lesson, friends.

  945. There's a lot to cover in that. I know 1

  946. Kings 21, you probably heard lessons

  947. many times on that, and I have

  948. I've really enjoyed looking at these

  949. again and studying and and preparing

  950. these lessons.

  951. There's there's so much power in these

  952. lessons, isn't there?

  953. I'm asking, "What will we learn from the

  954. vineyard?" The vineyard next door.

  955. Well, what do we take home from Ahab and

  956. Naboth?

  957. Ahab taught us something tonight. You

  958. don't let desire rule your heart.

  959. Naboth taught us, don't sell what

  960. belongs to God.

  961. Jezebel taught us something. What she

  962. teaches don't use influence to help

  963. others sin.

  964. Elijah taught us something. What was

  965. that?

  966. Elijah taught us, don't be afraid to let

  967. God's word confront wrong.

  968. And the Lord teaches

  969. he sees, he judges, and he shows mercy

  970. to those who humble themselves.

  971. Friends,

  972. as we have been reminded yet again in

  973. this evening's lesson, this is not

  974. simply This is not simply an Old

  975. Testament story that children are

  976. learning in their Bible classes.

  977. It is a biblical account that reaches to

  978. where we are today. And you know what it

  979. does? It gives us a present-day warning.

  980. There are still vineyards we may be

  981. tempted to covet.

  982. There are still inheritance we must

  983. refuse to sell.

  984. And there are still voices that will

  985. encourage compromise. And there is still

  986. a God who sees everything. And you know

  987. what else?

  988. There's still a savior who calls us to

  989. come.

  990. If you're not a Christian, I want to

  991. tell you in this vineyard next door

  992. we've learned, don't trade your soul for

  993. temporary things

  994. of this world.

  995. You do exactly as God tells you. You

  996. believe in Christ, repent of your sins,

  997. confess Jesus to be the son of God, and

  998. be baptized for the remission of your

  999. sins to rise and walk in newness of

  1000. life.

1001. You can do that this evening.

1002. As a disciple of Christ, maybe you've

1003. allowed these things we talked about,

  1004. covetousness, compromise, bitterness,

  1005. dishonesty, worldliness, all those

1006. things to take root in your heart. And

1007. I'm saying again from the scriptures,

1008. humble yourself before God. Don't wait

1009. until the vineyard has become a place of

  1010. judgment.

1011. You come back to the Lord.

1012. May our hearts be like Naboth's when the

1013. when the world offers its trade to us,

1014. what is our words we say? The Lord

  1015. forbid that I.

  1016. Learn that phrase.

1017. Cuz there's going to be a vineyard next

  1018. door at some point.

1019. And there may be one right now in your

1020. mind, and you say those words, the Lord

  1021. forbid that I.

1022. And that we leave here determined this

1023. evening that some things are not for

  1024. sale.

  1025. They're not for sale.
