  1. In our last lesson in our series that we

  2. started a couple of weeks ago, Truth

  3. That Transforms, Discovering God, His

  4. Word, and Your Purpose, and My Purpose.

  5. Uh we entered in what might be called

  6. the courtroom of evidence.

  7. Uh we examined the testimony of

  8. creation. We considered the fingerprints

  9. of design. Uh we looked at the principle

  10. of cause and effect. And we reflected

  11. upon human consciousness and the moral

  12. law written upon the heart. And after

  13. examining the evidence, we reached the

  14. conclusion that was expressed by the

  15. Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 1 and

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  16. verse 20. And that very section of

  17. scripture, in verses 18 through 20, we

  18. were noting, says, "For the wrath of God

  19. is revealed from heaven against all

  20. ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

  21. who suppress the truth in

  22. unrighteousness, because what may be

  23. known of God is manifest in them, for

  24. God has shown it to them. For since the

  25. creation of the world, his invisible

  26. attributes are clearly seen, being

  27. understood by the things that are made,

  28. even his eternal power and what else?

  29. Godhead, so that they are without

  30. excuse." All right. As we noted in that

  31. lesson, creation tells us what? There's

  32. a creator. Design tells us what? There

  33. is a designer.

  34. And moral law tells us that there is a

  35. lawgiver. See how that works? But once

  36. we went through all of that, then of

  37. course it raises another question that

  38. we have to look at. Questions that we

  39. may have not only on our minds right

  40. now, but also questions we may we may be

  41. asked sometime later on the day or

  42. throughout the week as the Lord gives us

  43. more time here upon this earth. That I

  44. would say a question that is quite

  45. natural that we certainly must ask and

  46. that is has this God spoken which leads

  47. us to this question what is the Bible?

  48. Mhm.

  49. Can we know

  50. anything about God

  51. beyond what we observe in creation? Can

  52. we know what he is like? Can we know why

  53. he made us? Can we know what he expects

  54. from us?

  55. Can we know what has gone wrong with the

  56. world?

  57. Can we know whether there is any hope

  58. beyond sin, suffering, and death? Can we

  59. know the answers to those questions?

  60. Can we know

  61. his will?

  62. And if he has spoken

  63. can we trust what he has revealed to us?

  64. And again, that's the subject for this

  65. morning's lesson. What is the Bible?

  66. Well, for some people the Bible is

  67. merely an old religious book. Uh for

  68. others uh they might call it a

  69. collection of inspiring sayings.

  70. But the Bible presents itself as

  71. something far greater.

  72. Uh

  73. as people try to make it well, it's just

  74. literature or it's just a history book

  75. or it's well, some might say it's just a

  76. family heirloom. Okay, they treat it

  77. like that.

  78. Others may only open it when there's a

  79. time of crisis going on in their lives.

  80. Now,

  81. again, the Bible claims what? To be

  82. God's written revelation to mankind.

  83. That's what the Bible claims to be.

  84. It is not uh

  85. uh merely a record of humanity searching

  86. for God, it is the record of God

  87. revealing himself to humanity.

  88. And there's a distinction that we need

  89. to understand right off, I believe. And

  90. that's this.

  91. Creation reveals the fingerprints of

  92. God.

  93. But scripture reveals the voice of God.

  94. Kind of get that in your mindset. We're

  95. working through these lessons together,

  96. right?

  97. And I mentioned a fingerprint at at a at

  98. a scene may tell an investigator that

  99. someone was present. We used that

  100. example, remember last time?

  101. And again, that's helpful

  102. uh to to identify who was there.

  103. But if we want to know what the person

  104. thought, what that person intended, or

  105. what that person desires to communicate,

  106. we need more than a fingerprint, don't

  107. we?

  108. We need a statement. That's That'd be

  109. nice. We need words. We need

  110. communication. So, how does that fit

  111. into this?

  112. Well, creation tells us that God is.

  113. The Bible tells us who God is.

  114. Creation, as we look around us, even our

  115. own cells, how many times I used that

  116. from the psalmist, we are wonderfully

  117. and fearfully made. We agree with that,

  118. don't we?

  119. Yes, we are. All of creation around us,

  120. the universe, all creation displays

  121. God's power.

  122. But the Bible reveals his character.

  123. Creation shows us his wisdom. The Bible

  124. reveals his holy and divine will.

  125. And as we noted in the verse there in

  126. Romans chapter 1, I bring it back up

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  127. here

  128. that I have outlined.

  129. Creation leaves us without excuse.

  130. And that means the Bible or scripture

  131. shows us the way home.

  132. That's why this lesson about the Bible

  133. matters.

  134. If God has spoken, then his words

  135. deserve more than a casual interest,

  136. doesn't it?

  137. They deserve our attention, our trust,

  138. our submission, our obedience.

  139. Cuz friends,

  140. the first thing I want to mention in

  141. this first point is God has not remained

  142. silent.

  143. He has not remained silent. Our

  144. scripture reading that brother Daniel

  145. read there for us and and let us in

  146. begins with an extraordinary

  147. declaration, and what was that?

  148. God spoke.

  149. God who at various times and in various

  150. ways spoke in time past to the fathers

  151. by the prophets. I would tell you that

  152. this may be one of the most important

  153. truths in all of the Bible, and God has

  154. spoken.

  155. The God who created the heavens and the

  156. earth did not leave humanity to simply

  157. wander around through life without

  158. direction.

  159. He did not create us and then retreat

  160. into silence.

  161. He did not leave us to, well, let them

  162. construct their own truth or instruct

  163. their own morality or determine their

  164. own destiny.

  165. No, friends, what we find is God

  166. communicated,

  167. didn't he?

  168. That's what Hebrews 1:1 brings out.

    Hebrews 1:1

  169. And what Hebrews 1:1 is telling us right

    Hebrews 1:1

  170. off is throughout history God revealed

  171. himself in different ways, and I could

  172. go into a lot of depth on this, but I'm

  173. not. Um

  174. But think about this, what it says when

  175. he in various times and in various ways

  176. spoke.

  177. He spoke directly to individuals like

  178. Abraham,

  179. Moses.

  180. Uh he spoke through dreams, visions. Uh

  181. he spoke through angels. He spoke

  182. through Well, what's it say in verse

  183. one, latter part? Prophets.

  184. He revealed his will through the law.

  185. He taught through historical events,

  186. promises, warnings, poetry, wisdom, and

  187. prophecy.

  188. A lot of various ways in various times

  189. that he did that. And what do we see in

  190. verse two of our text there? Has in

  191. these last days

  192. There we go. Where we at today? spoken

  193. to us by his son,

  194. whom he has appointed heir of all

  195. things, through whom also he made the

  196. world.

  197. So all of God's revelation moves toward

  198. Jesus Christ.

  199. The prophets prepared the way. The

  200. promises pointed forward. The sacrifices

  201. foreshadowed him. The law anticipated

  202. him.

  203. And in the fullness of time,

  204. the word became flesh and dwelt among

  205. us. Isn't that what John 1 and verse 14

  206. says? Prove all things according to

  207. God's word, not DJs.

  208. You know, sometimes I get mixed up with

  209. copying and pasting sometimes when I try

  210. to put things up here. You know, I don't

  211. type all of these out every every one of

  212. these, right?

  213. So make sure to prove all according to

  214. God's word, not DJs. John 1:14 and the

    John 1:14

  215. word became flesh and dwelt among us,

  216. and we beheld his glory, the glory as of

  217. the only begotten of the Father, full of

  218. grace

  219. and truth.

  220. See,

  221. Jesus did not merely bring a message

  222. from God. He revealed God.

  223. What did Jesus tell Philip John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  224. 14 and verse 9.

  225. Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you

  226. so long and yet

  227. you have not known me, Philip?

  228. He who has seen me has seen

  229. the Father. So, how can you say show us

  230. the Father?"

  231. Now, you ready for this?

  232. If we want to know what God values, we

  233. look at Jesus.

  234. If we want to know how God views sin, we

  235. look at Jesus.

  236. And friends, if we want to know how God

  237. feels toward the lost, the hurting, the

  238. broken, guess where we're going to look.

  239. You guessed it, we look at Jesus.

  240. We look at it. And if we want to know

  241. the extent of God's love, we look at the

  242. cross.

  243. Because God has spoken most fully

  244. through his son as Hebrews 1 and verse 2

  245. says.

  246. But then you're saying, "Well, wait a

  247. second. There's another question I have

  248. on my mind."

  249. Jesus lived on the earth

  250. like 2,000 years ago.

  251. How can we know what he taught?

  252. How can we know what he did? How can we

  253. know his will today?

  254. Well,

  255. Jesus prepared his apostles for that

  256. very responsibility.

  257. When you go on down to verse 26 of John

  258. 14, you're going to find this. John 14

  259. and verse 26.

  260. But the helper,

  261. the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will

  262. send in my name, will teach you all

  263. things and bring to your remembrance all

  264. things that I said to you.

  265. Because again, even though we say,

  266. "Well, DJ, I know I know a lot of this.

  267. I know this stuff."

  268. And again, I'm looking at it from a

  269. standpoint of you getting questions from

  270. somebody later on today, are you able to

  271. go and and and explain this and expound

  272. upon these things, the scriptures and

  273. teaching someone? Because these these

  274. are questions that are very common

  275. that I come across.

  276. And you, engaging in any conversation

  277. about the Bible,

  278. you're going to have these same

  279. questions brought up to you as well.

  280. So, Jesus talks about a helper. He talks

  281. about the Holy Spirit. Well, you know,

  282. if you go on later on in John 16 and

  283. verse 13, later he says this.

  284. John 16 and verse 13, "However, when he,

  285. the spirit of truth, has come, he will

  286. guide you into all truth, for he will

  287. not speak on his own authority, but

  288. whatever he hears, he will speak, and he

  289. will tell you things to come."

  290. This is what a great blessing this is.

  291. When we read these verses

  292. and and I thought about, you know, if if

  293. I was there as as one of the apostles

  294. and thinking,

  295. you know, I'm so glad that I was not

  296. left to rely upon imperfect

  297. human memory.

  298. Okay?

  299. The Holy Spirit guided them.

  300. And what the Holy Spirit did, he brought

  301. Jesus' words to their remembrance. He

  302. revealed truth to them. And through

  303. their preaching, and yes, guess what?

  304. Through their writing,

  305. the record we have, the message of

  306. Christ was preserved for generations

  307. yet unborn.

  308. Friends, the Bible exists because God

  309. chose to speak.

  310. Now, then we start having more

  311. conversations. All right? So, let's

  312. say we agree on all that first point.

  313. Well,

  314. now we got to talk about this.

  315. So, you're talking about the Bible is

  316. God's word that's given through human

  317. writers.

  318. Well, someone may ask the question,

  319. well, did men write the Bible? Well,

  320. yes.

  321. Men physically wrote words. Now, we can

  322. go through a whole list of things here.

  323. I mean, obviously Moses wrote, David,

  324. Isaiah, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Paul,

  325. Peter, John. We we we got a lot of

  326. records, don't we? We have a lot that

  327. wrote.

  328. But that's not the whole explanation

  329. though to it.

  330. Keep in mind from the first point that

  331. the Bible was written by men who were

  332. guided by God.

  333. What's that scripture we many times will

  334. go to

  335. on this?

  336. If you have the charts in front of you,

  337. you already know the answer.

  338. 2 Timothy chapter 3:16 and 17, don't we?

  339. 2 Timothy chapter 3:16 and 17. I want

  340. y'all to notice what's stated there

  341. again.

  342. All scripture is given by inspiration of

  343. God.

  344. And is profitable for doctrine, for a

  345. proof, for correction, for instruction

  346. and righteousness that the man of God

  347. may be complete, thoroughly equipped for

  348. every good work.

  349. When you look at that expression, we've

  350. seen this, I'm sure, before at some

  351. point or another, maybe, that when we

  352. look at that word given by inspiration

  353. of God, it carries the idea of

  354. God-breathed.

  355. God-breathed. That's the very thought

  356. there with the translated word

  357. inspiration.

  358. And what that's telling us is that

  359. scripture proceeded from the mind of God

  360. and the words were recorded through

  361. human writers. Yes, but the message

  362. originated where? Originated with God.

  363. Now,

  364. when you look at Again, I'm giving you a

  365. lot of information here. I know this

  366. morning in in short amount of time.

  367. But when you look at these passages and

  368. see how all of this is connected and and

  369. again, if you flip over to 2 Peter 1,

  370. you're going to find again this very

  371. same thought.

  372. 2 Peter chapter 1, you look at verse 20

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  373. and verse 21. 2 Peter chapter 1 verses

    2 Peter 1:20

  374. 20 and 21 how Peter explained it this

  375. way.

  376. Knowing this first that no prophecy of

  377. scripture is of any private

  378. interpretation.

  379. Look at verse 21. For prophecy never

  380. came by the will of man, but holy men of

  381. God spoke as they were moved by

  382. Uh-oh.

  383. Didn't we just talk about that one?

  384. We talked about the Holy Spirit. They

  385. were moved by the Holy Spirit.

  386. So the prophets, they weren't sitting

  387. down and deciding I'm going to invent a

  388. message from God. They did not write

  389. merely because well, they possessed a

  390. religious insight. They spoke as they

  391. were moved by the Holy Spirit.

  392. Now let's talk about that word moved.

  393. I'm going to give you some Greek words

  394. and again, I'm not a Greek scholar, is

  395. my studies here. The Greek word that is

  396. from that verb

  397. right?

  398. And it means being carried along or born

  399. along or driven along.

  400. The form is a present passive participle

  401. indicating that the prophets were not

  402. directing the process themselves.

  403. They were being carried along by the

  404. Holy Spirit. I think that's again, we

  405. try to get our understanding in this.

  406. Uh

  407. this word actually the same basic word

  408. moved is used. We We find it in Acts

    Acts 27 chapter mention

  409. chapter 27.

  410. Do y'all know that?

  411. Acts chapter 27 and verses 15 as well as

    Acts 27 chapter mention

  412. verse 17. And that word being used moved

  413. is describing a a ship being driven or

  414. carried along by the wind.

  415. So get this in your mind.

  416. Shouldn't think about the ship there in

  417. Acts 27.

  418. The sailors

  419. were real.

  420. We agree with that.

  421. The ship that they were on,

  422. that was real.

  423. But the wind carried the vessel where it

  424. needed to go.

  425. Very real.

  426. In a similar way, the biblical writers,

  427. they were not lifeless instruments.

  428. They their personalities remain visible.

  429. Their vocabulary differs. I mean, you

  430. look at the differences. Their

  431. backgrounds differ.

  432. If you look back to the Old Testament,

  433. you say, "Well, David, he wrote as a

  434. shepherd and a warrior and a king,

  435. didn't he?"

  436. Luke, well, you read the book of Luke

  437. and he wrote with careful attention as

  438. as that of a historian and a and a

  439. physician.

  440. Paul, he wrote wrote with a reasoning of

  441. a trained scholar and the passion of a

  442. of an apostle.

  443. Oh, and Peter.

  444. Peter often wrote with a directness of a

  445. fisherman

  446. who had walked with Jesus.

  447. And you can see their distinct

  448. personalities.

  449. But yet it's all what? It's all united.

  450. So yeah, their personalities were

  451. present, yet the Holy Spirit guided the

  452. message so that what they wrote was what

  453. God intended to reveal.

  454. Paul told the Corinthians

  455. in 1 Corinthians 2 and verse 13,

  456. 1 Corinthians 2 and verse 13,

  457. "These things we also speak, not in

  458. words which man's wisdom teaches,

  459. but which the Holy Spirit teaches,

  460. comparing spiritual things with

  461. spiritual."

  462. The Bible, therefore, is not merely

  463. words of Moses, David, Isaiah, Paul,

  464. John, and so forth. It's the word of God

  465. again communicated through them. Make

  466. sure we have that in our minds.

  467. Cuz that's why Paul praised the

  468. Thessalonians. Isn't that right?

  469. 1 Thessalonians 2 and verse 13,

  470. "For this reason we also thank God

  471. without ceasing, because when you

  472. received the word of God which you heard

  473. from us,

  474. you welcomed it not as the word of men,

  475. but as it is in truth, the word of God

  476. which also effectively works in you who

  477. believe."

  478. This is something here. We're talking

  479. about all of this this morning in a

  480. series of lessons.

  481. They understood the difference. They did

  482. not treat apostolic teaching as human

  483. opinion. They received it as the word of

  484. God.

  485. And I'm going to tell you, friends, this

  486. morning, that same distinction matters

  487. still today.

  488. When we open the Bible, we are not

  489. merely reading what ancient people

  490. thought about God.

  491. We are reading what God chose to reveal

  492. through them.

  493. Now,

  494. second,

  495. we say we have

  496. all of these things in play in our

  497. minds,

  498. and I mentioned a moment ago with all

  499. the different and distinct personalities

  500. that that that that are certainly from

  501. fishermen to kings and so forth.

  502. That that the Bible, you know, again

  503. contains many individual books written

  504. by different men, different places,

  505. under different circumstances. Some of

  506. that we'll get into

  507. in our our next lesson as well.

  508. But the point I want to bring up in this

  509. book is the Bible tells one unified

  510. story.

  511. Because within its page pages we find

  512. history, law, poetry, prophecy, wisdom,

  513. biography, letters, and visions. All of

  514. those things are in there.

  515. And yet despite all of that variety,

  516. the Bible

  517. tells one unified story.

  518. And that unity is one of I would say of

  519. the Bible's most remarkable

  520. characteristics.

  521. Because the Bible is not a pile of

  522. disconnected religious documents that

  523. we're just going to glue in here and

  524. it's just, you know, hopefully you can

  525. make sense of it.

  526. It's a complete revelation moving in one

  527. direction.

  528. It begins with creation.

  529. It explains the entrance of sin and

  530. unfolds God's plan of redemption. It

  531. centers upon Jesus Christ.

  532. It reveals the establishment of his

  533. church and it ends with a hope of final

  534. victory and eternal fellowship with God.

  535. From beginning to end, one great story

  536. is being told.

  537. God created, humanity rebelled, sin

  538. separated, God promised, Christ came,

  539. Christ died, Christ arose, the gospel

  540. was proclaimed, the church was

  541. established, Christ will return, and

  542. God's people will be brought home. And

  543. you're like, well, that's a quick

  544. summary.

  545. But how often do we see it as such?

  546. That many people, they know individual

  547. Bible accounts, Bible stories, but have

  548. never seen how all of those fit

  549. together.

  550. Like we know about Noah in the ark,

  551. don't we?

  552. From Genesis chapter 6. We know about

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  553. Abraham and Isaac.

  554. Moses and the Red Sea. David and

  555. Goliath. Daniel and the lions' den.

  556. Jesus feeding the multitudes. The cross

  557. and the empty tomb. See, we know those

  558. are are very popular

  559. stories, but I'm telling you this

  560. morning, those are not isolated stories.

  561. They are chapters with an within one

  562. unfolding plan. That's what is so

  563. mind-blowing.

  564. Remember we were talking about not too

  565. long ago from Luke chapter 24, Jesus was

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  566. talking about this.

  567. Remember, Jesus met two disciples on the

  568. road to Emmaus, and and and this is what

  569. we have recorded in verse 27, Luke 24,

  570. "And beginning at Moses and all the

  571. prophets, he, Jesus, he expounded them

  572. in all the scriptures the things

  573. concerning himself."

  574. And then later on in verse 44,

  575. "Then he said to them, these are the

  576. words which I spoke to you while I was

  577. still with you, that all things must be

  578. fulfilled which were written in the law

  579. of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms

  580. concerning

  581. me."

  582. That's Jesus talking to them.

  583. And what he was doing, he said, here's

  584. the big picture.

  585. The big picture of the law pointing to

  586. him. The prophets, the Psalms, the

  587. sacrifices, the promises, the entire

  588. biblical story converges upon Christ.

  589. You

  590. sometimes imagery helps me. Um I'm a

  591. very visual learner. I'll just

  592. be quick and let me tell you about that.

  593. Kinsey definitely knows that about me.

  594. She's going to say something about

  595. something. She wants to do something

  596. with this on the wall of the house. You

  597. know, what would you think? You're going

  598. to have to get me a picture.

  599. You want to draw that out for me. And

  600. I'm glad she's she's she's good at doing

  601. that cuz

  602. I can't make sense of any of it.

  603. So, I have to have that imagery. And So,

  604. the imagery I was thinking about sharing

  605. with you this morning on this is is I

  606. think of of of a great tapestry.

  607. Uh when you view it from the back,

  608. woah, what do you see? There's a bunch

  609. of loose threads. There's going to be

  610. some knots. And there's colors that just

  611. appear

  612. disconnected. Just

  613. I don't know.

  614. I don't know what's going on there.

  615. It just doesn't look right. But when you

  616. turn it around, what do you have? You

  617. have a complete picture that emerges,

  618. don't you?

  619. And that's the beauty of it.

  620. When you even think about individual

  621. passages, they may sometimes

  622. seem separate when viewed alone.

  623. But when we step back and see the whole

  624. revelation, that's what we have. We have

  625. a picture that looks Oh, that's clear.

  626. That makes sense. All these pieces of a

  627. puzzle that we sometimes use that

  628. example, they're all over What do we do

  629. with that? They all go together.

  630. And Jesus Christ stands at the center.

  631. And I'm telling you

  632. that that unity is not accidental.

  633. It reflects one divine mind behind the

  634. message

  635. that we have today.

  636. Cuz let me tell you about the Bible.

  637. Third thing I want to share with you is

  638. the Bible reveals what creation alone

  639. cannot tell us.

  640. Creation reveals much about God, no

  641. doubt about it. Romans 1 covered we

  642. covered some of that as well on Sunday

  643. last two Sundays ago.

  644. But Psalm 19 that brother Bobby led for

  645. us and and and you think about that

  646. message and that song as well as what

  647. Psalm 19 speaks about.

  648. Verse one right off, the heavens declare

  649. the glory of God and the firmament shows

  650. his handiwork.

  651. But later in the same Psalm David moves

  652. from creation to revelation.

  653. He goes from Psalm 19 verse one to Psalm

  654. 19 and verse seven and as we just sang

  655. right before the lesson is what? The law

  656. of the Lord is perfect converting the

  657. soul, the testimony of the Lord is sure

  658. making wise the simple.

  659. What did you just get from that in Psalm

  660. 19 verse one and verse seven?

  661. What you just saw is the heavens reveal

  662. God's glory and in verse seven you just

  663. saw the scripture reveals God's will.

  664. Creation can show us that God possesses

  665. great power but creation alone does not

  666. tell us how sinners can be forgiven.

  667. The stars can show us God's wisdom but

  668. they do not explain the meaning of the

  669. cross.

  670. The mountains can inspire all but they

  671. do not tell us what God commands us to

  672. do.

  673. The oceans can display majesty but they

  674. do not reveal the terms of the gospel.

  675. You see what I'm saying? For those

  676. truths we need

  677. God's spoken and written revelation.

  678. Romans 10 and verse 14, look at it.

  679. Romans 10 and verse 14.

  680. How then shall they call on him in whom

  681. they have not believed? And how shall

  682. they believe in in him

  683. of whom they have not heard? And how

  684. shall they hear without a preacher?

  685. What does he conclude in verse 17?

  686. So then faith comes by hearing and

  687. hearing by the word of God.

  688. Saving faith does not arise from simply

  689. looking at nature.

  690. Saving faith comes through hearing the

  691. message of Jesus Christ.

  692. Think about how that works.

  693. Creation can lead us to ask questions.

  694. Who made this? We just talked about

  695. that, didn't we? Scripture though

  696. answers the God and Father of our Lord

  697. and Savior Jesus Christ. Creation will

  698. tell us

  699. we are accountable.

  700. Scripture tells us how we can be

  701. reconciled.

  702. Again, creation reveals there's a

  703. creator, the creator, God, and scripture

  704. reveals the savior.

  705. That is why the Bible is so

  706. necessary.

  707. Because without revelation, mankind

  708. would be left with questions that

  709. creation alone cannot answer.

  710. But I'm thankful today that God has not

  711. left us guessing.

  712. Because he has spoken.

  713. He has spoken.

  714. It has been preserved

  715. for us even this day.

  716. Now,

  717. let me move on.

  718. Some people,

  719. you know, treat the Bible

  720. as though it belonged on an episode of

  721. Unsolved Mysteries.

  722. They say everyone interprets it

  723. differently.

  724. And they conclude that no one can truly

  725. know what God means.

  726. I'm going to tell you at this point,

  727. God's will can be known.

  728. It is true that people often disagree

  729. about the Bible.

  730. It's also true that some passages, you

  731. know, again, we talk about careful

  732. study. And the fact that something must

  733. be studied carefully does not mean that

  734. it cannot be understood.

  735. Look what Paul said in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 3:3–5

  736. 3 verses 3 through 5.

  737. Ephesians chapter 3 verses 3 through 5.

    Ephesians 3:3–5

  738. How that by revelation he had he made

  739. known to me the mystery as I have

  740. briefly written already, by which when

  741. you read you may understand my knowledge

  742. in the mystery of Christ, which in other

  743. ages was not made known to the sons of

  744. men, as it has now been revealed by the

  745. spirit to his holy apostles and

  746. prophets.

  747. So, we covered a lot of that already,

  748. didn't we?

  749. I want you to notice something. There is

  750. so much confidence that Paul gives us

  751. here.

  752. Paul said

  753. he wrote

  754. they could read

  755. and by reading they could understand.

  756. God did not reveal his will in order to

  757. conceal it again. See, that just doesn't

  758. make sense, does it?

  759. And Moses told Israel in Deuteronomy 29

    Deuteronomy 29:29

  760. verse 29, he said the secret things

  761. belong to the Lord our God, but those

  762. things which are revealed belong to us

  763. and our children forever, that we may do

  764. all the words of this law.

  765. Are there some secret things that we

  766. don't know that have not been revealed?

  767. I'm going to say, "Yeah, there's some

  768. things."

  769. We don't know everything that God knows,

  770. and we cannot answer every question

  771. about providence and about eternity or

  772. the unseen world. We we don't know all

  773. the answers to some of those things, but

  774. the things God has revealed, they belong

  775. to us.

  776. And he revealed them so we might obey.

  777. More imagery from the scriptures, Psalm

    Psalms 119:105

  778. 119:105.

  779. How is the word described?

  780. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a

  781. light to my path. Psalm 119:105.

    Psalms 119:105

  782. See, we we see things like that. And and

  783. a lamp that's given so that a traveler

  784. could see where to walk.

  785. See, God's word is not intended to leave

  786. us in

  787. deeper darkness. It gives direction. It

  788. identifies danger. It reveals the right

  789. path. It shows us how to live.

  790. So, the problem is often not, you know,

  791. that God has failed to speak clearly.

  792. That's not it.

  793. The problem is that we sometimes

  794. approach the Bible with the wrong

  795. attitude.

  796. Cuz sometimes

  797. folks will grab the Bible and they'll

  798. read looking for support for what we

  799. already believe.

  800. We we we may we may pull a Bible off the

  801. shelf and we will start looking to

  802. isolate verses from their context.

  803. We may allow tradition to control our

  804. interpretation.

  805. We may ask, "What does this verse mean

  806. to me?" before asking this vital

  807. question. And that is, "What did God

  808. communicate through this passage?"

  809. See, an humble student does not place

  810. their own ideas above the text. They

  811. listen. They study. They compare

  812. scripture with scripture. They they

  813. consider the speaker of the audience,

  814. the covenant, the the context, the

  815. purpose.

  816. They handle the word of God

  817. carefully. 2 Timothy 2 and verse 15.

  818. 2 Timothy 2 and verse 15 says what? If

  819. you're using old King James, you use

  820. King James version? Says study to show

  821. yourself, right?

  822. Be diligent to present yourself approved

  823. to God, a worker who does not need to be

  824. ashamed, rightly dividing the word of

  825. truth.

  826. Friends, the point I want to emphasize

  827. here is that God's will can be known.

  828. But it must be approached honestly and

  829. handled

  830. correctly.

  831. It has to be.

  832. What else about the Bible?

  833. Well, the Bible provides everything

  834. necessary for faithful living.

  835. You know, we used that passage a moment

  836. ago from 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  837. And the latter part there of verse 17

  838. talks or verse the latter part of verse

  839. 16 says that profitable for doctrine,

  840. for reproof, for correction, for

  841. instruction in righteousness, that the

  842. man of God may be complete, thoroughly

  843. equipped for every good work.

  844. What's that telling us? Scripture

  845. teaches us what is right,

  846. exposes what is wrong, correction

  847. corrects our direction, and trains us to

  848. live righteously.

  849. That's why we see that

  850. in verse 17.

  851. The Bible is sufficient to accomplish

  852. what God designed

  853. for it to accomplish.

  854. And again, it it does not answer every

  855. question human curiosity may invent. It

  856. it it doesn't teach us how to repair an

  857. engine or perform surgery or build a

  858. computer that's because that's not its

  859. purpose.

  860. It reveals what we need to know about

  861. God,

  862. about sin, about salvation, about

  863. worship, about righteousness, about the

  864. church, about Christian living, about

  865. judgment, about eternity.

  866. That's what the Bible does.

  867. Second Peter 1 and verse 3, look at that

  868. one. Second Peter 1 and verse 3.

  869. Peter wrote,

  870. "As His divine power has given to us all

  871. things that pertain to life and

  872. godliness through the knowledge of Him

  873. who called us by glory and virtue."

  874. God has not given us part of what we

  875. need. He has given us all things that

  876. pertain to life and godliness.

  877. This is the faith that we This is where

  878. faith comes from, doesn't it? Romans

    Romans 10:17

  879. 10:17. Same thing Jude and verse 3 talks

  880. about. "Beloved, while I was very

  881. diligent to write to you concerning our

  882. common salvation, I found it necessary

  883. to write to you exhorting you to contend

  884. earnestly for the faith which was once

  885. delivered for all

  886. which was once for all delivered to the

  887. saints." The faith was delivered. It was

  888. not meant to be rewritten by every

  889. generation that comes along. It does not

  890. need to be modernized by adding Well,

  891. new revelations. It does not need to be

  892. supplemented by human creeds.

  893. The Bible itself,

  894. God's word is sufficient. Human

  895. traditions, they're going to change. We

  896. know that. Cultural values, they're

  897. going to shift. We know that. Popular

  898. opinions, they will rise and they will

  899. fall, but the word of God remains even

  900. as Isaiah 40 and verse 8 says, "The

  901. grass withers, the flower fades, but the

  902. word of our God stands forever."

  903. Friends, we don't need a new truth for a

  904. new generation. We need the unchanging

  905. truth applied faithfully to every

  906. generation.

  907. That's what we need.

  908. I'm going to ask you this this morning.

  909. Can you Do you trust the Bible?

  910. Do you trust?

  911. When you open the Bible and all that

  912. we've talked about so far, do you say

  913. that is God's revealed word?

  914. Do you believe that?

  915. Can you trust it?

  916. I'm going to submit to you in this one.

  917. We can trust the Bible because we can

  918. trust God.

  919. Our confidence in scripture ultimately

  920. rests upon the character of the one who

  921. gave it. The Bible even claims of

  922. itself, and we're going to talk about

  923. that on in these lessons in this series.

  924. You know, Paul spoke of in Titus 1 and

  925. verse 2, God who cannot lie.

  926. The Hebrew writer in Hebrews 6 and verse

  927. 18 brings this up. That by two immutable

  928. things in which it is impossible for God

  929. to lie.

  930. There's many more where that comes from.

  931. But even Jesus himself in that prayer in

  932. John 17 and verse 17 says, "Sanctify

  933. them by your truth. Your word is truth."

  934. God is truth. Therefore, what do we

  935. deduce from that?

  936. He

  937. What he gives us is truth.

  938. As human beings, we sometimes What do we

  939. do as humans? We we might lie

  940. intentionally.

  941. Uh sometimes we may speak inaccurately

  942. because our knowledge is limited.

  943. Sometimes our memories fail.

  944. Right?

  945. Sometimes we misunderstood what

  946. happened.

  947. But I'll tell you that, although that is

  948. definitely the human being part of us,

  949. none of those weaknesses apply to God.

  950. God knows all things.

  951. He sees the beginning and the end. He

  952. understands every fact clearly and

  953. perfectly. He He does not deceive. He

  954. does not make mistakes. He does not

  955. forget. He does not speak carelessly.

  956. His character guarantees the

  957. trustworthiness of his word.

  958. Now, this does not mean we should never

  959. examine the evidence supporting the

  960. Bible.

  961. In later lessons, we're going to

  962. consider how the scriptures were

  963. preserved.

  964. We're going to We're going to look at

  965. how the books were recognized. We're

  966. going to talk about what manuscript

  967. evidence exists. We're going to talk

  968. about why, again, we can trust the Bible

  969. that has reached us today.

  970. But, what I want to do in this lesson

  971. is before examining those questions, we

  972. have to understand the foundation.

  973. Because if the Bible is truly God's

  974. word,

  975. then its authority does not arise from a

  976. church council, a scholar, a preacher,

  977. or a religious tradition,

  978. ever.

  979. The authority comes from God.

  980. The church did not create the word of

  981. God.

  982. The word of God created the church.

  983. Human beings did not give scripture its

  984. authority. They recognized the authority

  985. it already possessed because it came

  986. from God.

  987. So,

  988. in all of this,

  989. what do we boil it down to?

  990. The Bible does more than inform, it

  991. transforms. Isn't that what these series

  992. of lessons are about?

  993. That's the title of this series, Truth

  994. that Transforms. The Bible was not given

  995. so we could Well, I'm going to satisfy

  996. my curiosity today.

  997. It was

  998. not given so we could go out and win

  999. religious arguments with folks. It was

1000. not given so we could just collect facts

1001. and memorize names or complete reading

1002. schedules. It was given to change us.

1003. Because the word of God is described in

1004. Hebrews 4 and verse 12 as living and

1005. powerful and sharper than any two-edged

1006. sword, piercing even the division of

1007. soul and spirit and of joints and

1008. marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts

1009. and intents of the heart.

  1010. That's where God's word reaches. Reaches

1011. places human words cannot reach.

1012. How it exposes motives and confronts sin

1013. and comforts the grieving, strengthens

1014. the weak and convicts the rebellious,

1015. gives hope to the hopeless.

1016. Leads the lost to Christ.

1017. Teaches the saved how to live.

1018. But transformation does not happen

  1019. simply because I own a Bible.

1020. It happens when the word is heard,

1021. believed, and obeyed. James 1 verse 22

    James 1:22

1022. says it right out. But be doers of the

1023. word and not hearers only, deceiving

  1024. your selves.

1025. Cuz friends, it's possible to hear truth

1026. without being changed by It's possible

1027. to sit through sermons and attend Bible

1028. classes and underline verses and still

1029. resist what God is saying. That's

  1030. possible.

1031. The Bible is not a mirror merely to be

1032. admired. James says it's a mirror into

1033. which we must look honestly.

1034. And when it reveals something that needs

1035. to be changed, we must respond.

1036. When it exposes sin, we must repent.

1037. When it gives a command, we must obey.

1038. When it offers a promise, we must trust.

1039. And when it directs our steps, we must

  1040. follow.

1041. Because friends, truth transforms only

  1042. when truth is received.

1043. Now, I know I gave you a lot this

  1044. morning.

1045. And I appreciate your kind attention

  1046. in this lesson.

1047. We began with several questions.

  1048. Has God spoken?

  1049. Yes.

1050. He spoke through the prophets. He spoke

1051. most fully through his son.

1052. He guided the apostles by the Holy

1053. Spirit as we saw. He preserved his

  1054. message in scripture.

1055. Can we know his will?

  1056. Yes.

1057. God revealed his will so that it could

1058. be read, understood, believed, and

  1059. obeyed.

1060. Can we trust what he has revealed?

  1061. Yes.

1062. The God who cannot lie stands behind his

  1063. word.

1064. What then is the Bible?

1065. Well, as we noted, the Bible is God's

  1066. inspired written revelation.

1067. It is his message communicated through

1068. human writers under the guidance of the

  1069. Holy Spirit.

1070. Tells one unified story centered upon

1071. Christ as we mentioned. Reveals what

1072. creation alone cannot tell us. Provides

1073. everything necessary for life and

1074. godliness as Peter mentioned. Carries

1075. the very authority of God. And it

1076. possesses the power to transform every

  1077. honest heart

  1078. that receives it.

1079. Very beginning of lesson, you remember

1080. what I said? Remember? I may have said

1081. to remember that. If you didn't know

  1082. maybe you did remember.

  1083. Creation is God's fingerprint.

  1084. Scripture is God's voice.

1085. And now what God has spoken, we must

1086. decide whether we're going to listen to

1087. it, whether we're going to obey to it.

1088. And and this leads naturally to our next

1089. question. What are we talking about? How

1090. did all of it come together? How are

1091. they preserved? Who rec- Who recognized

1092. the books that belong in scripture? Can

1093. we trust the manuscripts and

1094. translations that we have today? That's

1095. going to be a future lesson coming up,

1096. so stay tuned. All right?

1097. Cuz how do we get the Bible? It's going

1098. to be another question that you're going

1099. to be asked in your studies with other

  1100. folks.

1101. Before this morning today, we have

1102. learned that truth is not something

  1103. mankind invented.

  1104. Truth comes from God.

1105. Cuz the question is no longer, has God

1106. spoken? The question is, will we

1107. actually listen and obey what he has

  1108. said?

1109. Jesus warned in John 12:48, "He who

    John 12:48

1110. rejects and does not receive my words

1111. has that which judges him.

1112. The word that I have spoken will judge

1113. him in the last day." And you say,

  1114. "Is the Bible important?"

  1115. Is it important? Absolutely.

1116. You want to know what you're going to be

1117. judged by in the day of judgment? You

1118. got it right in front of you.

1119. The same word that offers salvation one

1120. day stand as a standard of judgment,

1121. friends. And we cannot claim that God

1122. remains silent. We cannot claim that he

1123. left us without direction because he's

1124. spoken to us through Jesus.

1125. The gospel tells us that Jesus Christ

1126. died for our sins, was buried, and rose

  1127. again.

1128. And the word calls us

  1129. to believe in Christ,

1130. turn from sin and repentance, confess

1131. Jesus to be the son of the living God,

  1132. and be baptized

1133. into Christ for the forgiveness of our

  1134. sins. That's God's plan of salvation

1135. that we have recorded for us.

1136. And you can do that this morning.

1137. If you want to study more about God's

1138. plan of salvation from his word, you let

1139. us know. We'd love to study with you.

1140. For those who have put on the body of

1141. Christ in baptism as a disciple of

1142. Christ, that same word calls us to walk

1143. faithfully in the light as he is in

  1144. light.

1145. So, perhaps today the word of God has

1146. revealed something in your life that

  1147. needs to change.

  1148. To return,

1149. prayers or encouragement from your

  1150. fellow brethren.

1151. Do not merely hear the word, allow that

  1152. truth to transform you.

1153. God has spoken, His word is truth,

  1154. and His invitation

  1155. is open right now.
