  1. Well, this evening we visit our asking

  2. for a friend series or Q&A. Again,

  3. that's the usually the third or at least

  4. if it's a five Sunday month, we have it

  5. fourth Sunday of the month. So, near the

  6. end of the month, we we usually have

  7. this on a Sunday evening as many of you

  8. are aware. And we take this time to uh

  9. look at another question that has been

  10. submitted. And I always like to of

  11. course uh express my appreciation uh for

  12. those questions that are submitted. Uh

  13. so there are some passages

  14. in scripture that almost every Bible uh

  15. student eventually

  16. pauses over and says, "What exactly does

  17. that mean?" I mean, we've all done that.

  18. I mean, I do that, you know.

  19. And one of those passages is found near

  20. the end of First John. So I want you to

  21. go in the New Testament book of First

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  22. John chapter 5. 1 John chapter 5. Now

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  23. we're going to spend some time in First

  24. John and and flipping back and forth

  25. from uh uh several chapters here in just

  26. a moment. So if you have a bookmark and

  27. those other passages we'll be looking

  28. at, go ahead and kind of mark that one

  29. as we'll go back and forth there.

  30. 1 John chapter 5 is where we're going to

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  31. start off here. And so the the verses

  32. that we are considering is what's found

  33. in verses 15 and 16. 15 and 16 first

  34. John 5. Look what it says. If anyone

  35. sees his brother sinning, a sin which

  36. does not lead to death, he will ask and

  37. he will give him life for those who

  38. commit sin, not leading to death. There

  39. is sin leading to death. I do not say

  40. that he should pray about that. All

  41. unrighteousness is sin and there is sin

  42. not leading to death. Now when you first

  43. glance at this and and this is kind of

  44. uh really I mean I've had the same

  45. questions at times when you just

  46. naturally look at this uh this question

  47. arises.

  48. What is the sin leading to death?

  49. Anybody ever ask that question? And I

  50. mean, you don't have to raise your hand

  51. or anything, but like I said, we we we

  52. read passages like that and you might

  53. have been reading that and you're like,

  54. you know what, I don't remember it. It's

  55. saying that exactly. Um, and and there's

  56. other things in this particular uh

  57. passage I'm going to address along with

  58. with this particular question because it

  59. just kind of leads into more questions

  60. actually. Uh because when you look at

  61. that verses there again uh you know it's

  62. not just what is the sin leading to

  63. death. Is there one particular sin that

  64. God will never forgive?

  65. Does this refer to physical death or

  66. spiritual death? That's been a question

  67. that has been asked before. Um and and

  68. why would John say that he is not

  69. encouraging Christians to pray for

  70. someone committing this sin?

  71. Now, all of these questions are sincere

  72. and we we again before we jump into any

  73. kind of of conclusions or anything like

  74. that, we must remember one of the

  75. greatest principles of Bible study. We

  76. talked about it recently in our series,

  77. Truth That Transforms, and talking about

  78. how we study the Bible. And this one

  79. goes right into it. Context

  80. determines meaning, right? Context

  81. determines meaning. So when we allow

  82. John's letter to do what? Answer

  83. John's question, the passage becomes

  84. much clearer. So what we're going to do

  85. is well, let's start here. Let's

  86. remember why John wrote the letter. Does

  87. anybody know why John wrote this letter?

  88. Because before explaining the verses

  89. that we've already got to in 1 John 5 16

  90. and 17, there's some things before that

  91. that we have to remind ourselves about.

  92. I want you to notice if you back up just

  93. a few verses in 1 John 5 and look at

  94. verse 13. Look what he says. These

  95. things I have written to you who believe

  96. in the name of the son of God that you

  97. may know that you have eternal life and

  98. that you may continue to believe in the

  99. name of the son of God.

  100. And really what you find about the

  101. letter, it's about assurance. Okay. Uh

  102. John wants Christians to know where

  103. eternal life is found. And really

  104. throughout the letter he repeatedly

  105. contrasts two groups, doesn't he? And

  106. some of those that might come to mind

  107. are well, he talks about those who walk

  108. in the light and those who walk in

  109. darkness. Uh he talks about those who uh

  110. confess Christ and those who deny

  111. Christ. Then he talks about those who

  112. abide in Christ and those who have

  113. departed from Christ. And so over and

  114. over again, John is is drawing a sharp

  115. distinction between genuine fellowship

  116. with Christ and a deliberate rejection

  117. of him.

  118. And what's that theme? We call it that.

  119. That theme really prepares us for what

  120. we find in verses 16 and 17. But let's

  121. work some more.

  122. Work our way up to it again. Let's talk

  123. about this how the context is persistent

  124. rejection of Jesus Christ. You ever

  125. noticed that?

  126. And and I'll tell you that that this

  127. happens a lot of times that one mistake

  128. we often make and again I say we because

  129. again I'm human. I I can do this too. Uh

  130. is is reading two verses while

  131. forgetting the previous five chapters.

  132. Sometimes we're reading along and we we

  133. read all that, but then we're like, "Oh,

  134. what what is those verses?" And so then

  135. we start kind of getting in that mode

  136. there. Well, we we got to go back a

  137. little bit. So, I want you to go to

  138. chapter 2 for a moment in First John. 1

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  139. John chapter 2. Look at verse 19.

  140. First John chapter 2 and verse 19. I

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  141. want us to notice what John has already

  142. emphasized. This is very important when

  143. you're trying to put these pieces here

  144. together. in in the whole context of

  145. what he's writing about. Verse 19 of 1

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  146. John chapter 2 says, "They went out from

  147. us, but they were not of us. For if they

  148. had been of us, they would have

  149. continued with us, but they went out

  150. that they might be made manifest that

  151. none of them were of us." Now, that's

  152. pretty interesting things there. So,

  153. when you're saying, "Well, who who is

  154. John talking about? Who who who are we

  155. identifying here?" Well, John is

  156. identifying that these were not faithful

  157. Christians who simply struggled with

  158. temptation. Friends, these were people

  159. who had abandoned the faith. That is

  160. important that we note that in what John

  161. is addressing because a few verses

  162. later, you go down to verse 22 of that

  163. same chapter, 1 John 2, look what it

  164. says. Who is a liar?

  165. But he who denies that Jesus is the

  166. Christ. He is Antichrist who denies the

  167. father and the son. Now, as I was

  168. studying this, I already come up with

  169. two more Q&As's for the next two months.

  170. So, you're gonna have to hold on a

  171. second. All right. Like Antichrist is

  172. that's a big one. All right. But

  173. anyways, I'm going to digress before I

  174. preach on that. So you see what what's

  175. stated here in verse 22. Connect that

  176. and and what's going on. Then I want you

  177. to go to chapter 4. Chapter 4. Look at

  178. verses 1 through3. Chapter 4:es 1

  179. through3. Let's read that one too.

  180. Look what he's saying. It's really

  181. important.

  182. Verse one. First John 4. Read on.

  183. Beloved, do not believe every spirit,

  184. but test the spirits whether they are of

  185. God, because many false prophets have

  186. gone out into the world. By this you

  187. know the spirit of God. Every spirit

  188. that confesses that Jesus Christ has

  189. come in the flesh is of God. And every

  190. spirit that does not confess that Jesus

  191. Christ has come in the flesh is not of

  192. God.

  193. And this is the spirit of the antichrist

  194. which you have heard was coming and is

  195. now already in the world.

  196. What is John doing?

  197. Well, I think it's it's pretty clear

  198. that John is confronting false teachers

  199. who rejected fundamental truths about

  200. Jesus.

  201. Then immediately before our text, go

  202. back to 1 John chapter 5. Of course, I'm

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  203. like I said, working our way through all

  204. these verses what you're seeing

  205. connected here.

  206. Immediately before our text, 1 John 5

    1 John 5:12

  207. verse 12,

  208. John says, "He who has the son has life.

  209. He who does not have the son of God does

  210. not have life."

  211. Language. Notice the language he's

  212. using.

  213. life, death. Where's life found? Son of

  214. God.

  215. Outside of Christ, there's death.

  216. There's no life.

  217. Do you see how that flows right into

  218. verses 16 and 17? Yet again, it all

  219. flows.

  220. So then the question comes up says, "All

  221. right, well, you talk about death. Well,

  222. what does John mean by death?" This has

  223. actually been a

  224. subject before uh people trying to

  225. identify what death is he talking about

  226. uh because before we identify the sin we

  227. need we need to identify the death so

  228. let's ask the question does John mean

  229. physical death here

  230. throughout this letter John consistently

  231. uses life and death

  232. spiritually doesn't go back to chapter 3

  233. and verse

  234. Here we go. Chapter 3 and verse 14 of

  235. First John. We know that we have passed

  236. from death to life because we love the

  237. brethren. He who does not love his

  238. brother abides where? In death. Is he

  239. talking about physical death? Well, no.

  240. We know that, right? He's talking about

  241. spiritual death. We that's that's

  242. exactly what he's talking about.

  243. Likewise, when you go back to 1 John 5

  244. and verse 12, he who has the son has

  245. life,

  246. physical life, or is he talking about

  247. spiritual? He's talking about eternal.

  248. So I think we understand he's talking

  249. about eternal there. There is therefore

  250. it's only natural to understand death

  251. here as spiritual separation from God.

  252. John is speaking about eternal

  253. consequences in this text.

  254. So now we got that.

  255. Then we got to get back to our question.

  256. All right, DJ. Then what is the sin

  257. leading to death? Because we're waiting

  258. with baited breath. Right

  259. now I will submit to you that there have

  260. been many interpretations that have been

  261. offered. Uh some have suggested that uh

  262. this sin leading to death is murder. Uh

  263. some have suggested that the sin leading

  264. to death is adultery. Uh some connect it

  265. with blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

  266. That's another Q&A for a later time. I

  267. could get all everything I want to in

  268. this one. Others believe it refers to

  269. Christians whom God strikes dead

  270. physically. Okay.

  271. Now, each one of those views has

  272. been proposed sincerely,

  273. but not a single one of them fits John's

  274. immediate context as naturally as

  275. another explanation I'm going to share

  276. with you this evening.

  277. I believe the best understanding is that

  278. John is describing

  279. persistent

  280. deliberate unrepentant rejection of

  281. Jesus Christ.

  282. I'm going to tell you why.

  283. Because that's exactly what he has

  284. discussed throughout the entire letter.

  285. friends,

  286. individuals

  287. that rejected Jesus. He talked about

  288. there are those who rejected apostolic

  289. teaching. He talked about he talked

  290. about those who had left the fellowship.

  291. He talked about those who refused to

  292. repent. He talked about those who

  293. rejected the only source of eternal

  294. life.

  295. And when someone persistently rejects

  296. the son, he remains in spiritual death

  297. because he refuses the only one who

  298. gives what? Life. Isn't that what we

  299. just saw in that passage that perfectly

  300. matches verse 12 again? He who has the

  301. son has life.

  302. Now

  303. in rejecting the sun we come to what

  304. conclusion now? Well the only one that

  305. definitely the contrast the polar

  306. opposite here is in rejecting the sun

  307. one one thereby remains in death. All

  308. right

  309. then we say well now we have talk about

  310. this one. He talks about a sin not

  311. leading to death.

  312. Which one's that one? Because that

  313. sounds confusing at first, doesn't it?

  314. When you read it, it's like, okay, wait

  315. a second. So, there's there's some sin

  316. out there that doesn't lead to death.

  317. Let's be careful when we start kind of

  318. using that. Okay. Because if some have

  319. reason, well, if some sin leads to

  320. death,

  321. well, DJ, what sin doesn't that John's

  322. talking about here?

  323. Well, I'm going to tell you that John

  324. has answered that already as well.

  325. Look back to chapter one and verse

  326. eight.

  327. Chapter one and verse eight. Now, I'm

  328. going to tell you, I really had a hard

  329. time. I started thinking, well, I'm just

  330. going to read John 1 John 1 all the way

  331. through chapter 5.

  332. And uh and I digress in my study. I

  333. said, well, we'll not do that. Uh but

  334. I'm I'm I'm hopefully I'm in and all

  335. that I'm sharing with you, you'll see

  336. this. And again, take the time to read

  337. all of First John

  338. uh and what we're talking about here

  339. because in First John 1 and verse 8,

  340. look at it. If we say that we have no

  341. sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth

  342. is not in us.

  343. Now,

  344. what that's telling us is Christians

  345. Christians still sin.

  346. But faithful Christians do something

  347. different.

  348. And what is that?

  349. They confess their sins.

  350. They repent of their sins. and they

  351. continue to walk in the light as he is

  352. in the light. Now, that's important to

  353. note because if you back up one verse, 1

  354. John 1 and verse 7, what do you find?

  355. But if we walk in the light as he is

  356. light, we have fellowship with one

  357. another and the blood of Jesus Christ,

  358. his son, cleanses us from all sin.

  359. So, here's a distinction that we're

  360. making here from what we're finding in

  361. John's letter is is

  362. These are not people he's discussing

  363. here that are abandoning Christ.

  364. These are believers that struggling

  365. while continuing to seek him.

  366. Their sins do not lead to death

  367. because they have not rejected the one

  368. who forgives sin. Y'all see that's a

  369. that isn't a a a distinction that has to

  370. be made in that passage. Otherwise, if

  371. you if you just kind of kind of throw it

  372. there together, it's not going to make

  373. any sense because then people are still

  374. wondering, well, there's got to be a sin

  375. out there that doesn't lead to death.

  376. Well, we know from 1 John 3:4 that sin

    1 John 3:4

  377. is what? Lawlessness.

  378. And what does Romans 6 verse 23 say

    Romans 6:23

  379. about sin? for the wages of sin is

  380. death.

  381. Right?

  382. He's making this distinction that that

  383. is so wonderful

  384. in in all this writing here

  385. is the sins again their sins do not lead

  386. to death because they have not rejected

  387. the one who forgives sin.

  388. Now,

  389. verse nine, I'm going to bring this one

  390. up back up in just a moment, but I'm

  391. going to go ahead and mention it again

  392. here. Verse, excuse me, verse 9 of First

  393. John 1, what's it say?

  394. If we confess

  395. our sins,

  396. there's what I was talking about a

  397. moment ago. If we confess our sins, he

  398. is faithful and just to forgive us our

  399. sins and to cleanse us from all

  400. unrighteousness. Verse 10. If we say

  401. that we have not sinned, we make him a

  402. liar and his word is not in us.

  403. Distinctions very important what we're

  404. reading.

  405. Then here comes another question. Next

  406. question we're working through is why is

  407. John talking about praying for one but

  408. not the other?

  409. I've read that too before in the past

  410. and I have had the same question.

  411. That's pretty interesting wording, isn't

  412. it?

  413. And I think uh this is probably one of

  414. the I most difficult parts of the

  415. passage and and I want to explain to you

  416. uh because again the the way we read

  417. this but but John says this just just

  418. keep this in mind in verse 16.

  419. If anyone sees his brother sitting a sin

  420. which does not lead to death, he will

  421. ask and he will give him life. All

  422. right.

  423. So prayer in this verse in the first

  424. part of this verse is encouraged for the

  425. brother who has stumbled who has sinned.

  426. Why?

  427. I think the answer's pretty easy as we

  428. just talked about a moment ago.

  429. Because restoration is possible.

  430. You go through the scriptures, James, go

  431. to the book of James, you're going to

  432. find that James tells us to do what?

  433. Pray for one another. You go and you

  434. look at what Paul Paul does this

  435. numerous times. He repeatedly prayed for

  436. struggling Christians.

  437. And what else do we find in the

  438. scriptures over and over again that the

  439. Lord delights in forgiving those who

  440. repent over and over again? And then

  441. we're like, well, hold on a second.

  442. Because then John adds something else

  443. that we're talking about. There is sin

  444. leading to death. I do not say that he

  445. should pray about that. Wait a second.

  446. Now,

  447. we read that and I want to tell you that

  448. when we do, we got to take a step back,

  449. maybe two, okay?

  450. Because I believe it's important to

  451. notice carefully what John does not say.

  452. That's when you kind of do these words

  453. and look at them real carefully what's

  454. going on here.

  455. He does not say,

  456. "Do not pray."

  457. Instead, he says, "I'm not saying that

  458. you should."

  459. And I believe that's a significant

  460. difference. And you, you know, bear with

  461. me on this point.

  462. John withholds the promise

  463. of answered prayer for someone who has

  464. hardened himself in deliberate apostasy.

  465. Because the problem is not God's

  466. unwillingness

  467. to forgive.

  468. The problem is the person's

  469. unwillingness to repent.

  470. What John is simply saying

  471. is prayer cannot substitute for

  472. repentance.

  473. No one can be forgiven while

  474. intentionally rejecting Christ.

  475. Now what I have done

  476. is I have looked and do you know that

  477. there are similar examples throughout

  478. scripture of what we're talking about

  479. right here.

  480. Absolutely.

  481. I want you to go to Jeremiah chapter 7.

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  482. Jeremiah chapter 7. We're going to the

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  483. Old Testament because this this idea is

  484. not unique to John.

  485. We're going back to Jeremiah chapter 7.

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  486. I'm going to use this for uh an example

  487. of similar example I just mentioned that

  488. that I believe helps us understand the

  489. seriousness of God telling someone not

  490. to pray for certain people. I know when

  491. we first hear that, we're just like,

  492. "Wait, wait a second." But look what's

  493. happening in in Jeremiah 7 and verse 16.

  494. Let's look at verse 16 together.

  495. Therefore, do not pray for this people,

  496. nor lift up a cry or prayer for them,

  497. nor make intercession to me, for I will

  498. not hear you. Now, we know Jeremiah,

  499. what a faithful prophet, right? Jeremiah

  500. was was such a faithful prophet. He went

  501. through thick and thin, did he not? And

  502. and and yet Jeremiah is in the midst of

  503. that's a study in of itself. He was he

  504. was in a lot of a lot of turmoil there

  505. with the people.

  506. But when you read that and you're like,

  507. "Wait a second then. What's the point?

  508. What are we doing?"

  509. Okay,

  510. this does not mean God was unwilling to

  511. forgive anyone

  512. who truly repented. that that is not it.

  513. The problem and you read the context,

  514. you read the text in chapter 7 alone,

  515. the problem was that Judah had

  516. persistently rejected God's warnings

  517. while continuing in idolatry and

  518. morality and empty religious worship.

  519. That's what he's talking about.

  520. And God had repeatedly called them to

  521. change. You go back to verse three and

  522. you're going to see the words, amend

  523. your ways and your doings.

  524. That was verse three of Jeremiah 7. And

  525. then we get to verse 16. And the point

  526. is they refused to listen to the words

  527. from the Lord through the prophet

  528. Jeremiah to amend their ways and to and

  529. their doings. And because they refused

  530. to listen, by this point, judgment upon

  531. the nation had become settled. And

  532. Jeremiah was no longer to pray that God

  533. removed the consequences. While the

  534. people, here's the key part, don't

  535. forget this. while the people continued

  536. refusing to remove the sin.

  537. I I think the point is is simple is that

  538. Jeremiah, he could pray for the people,

  539. but he couldn't repent for the people.

  540. See the difference?

  541. I mean, you think about this.

  542. There's people that we know It's all

  543. around. We We pray for leaders. We pray

  544. for all sorts of things. We're told to

  545. pray.

  546. But my prayer for someone who refuses to

  547. to obey God is not going to override and

  548. give that person forgiveness from God.

  549. It's it's that's not that's not how that

  550. works. It didn't work in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 7 chapter mention

  551. chapter 7. And it's not going to work as

  552. 1 John 5 and verse 16 is telling us. And

  553. and the reason I use Jeremiah because I

  554. believe that that gives that gives us

  555. some helpful background to understand

  556. what's going on in in First John 5

  557. because this again first John 5 this is

  558. not new. We just went back Old Testament

  559. then way way back when.

  560. But again the point that I'm I'm

  561. emphasizing here is prayer does not

  562. override persistent unrepentant

  563. rebellion. it's not going to do it. So

  564. the issue is is not one sin that

  565. suddenly makes uh forgiveness impossible

  566. but a hardened refusal to turn back to

  567. God.

  568. Because friends, the issue was never

  569. God's lack of mercy.

  570. It's never that. The issue was

  571. persistent rebellion.

  572. And I'll tell you, there's some other

  573. passages that you can connect this with

  574. and and and see this in the New

  575. Testament. Hebrews for for example,

  576. Hebrews chapter 6 and verses 4-6 is one

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  577. of them.

  578. And and this is again I think fits right

  579. into what we're talking about. Hebrews

  580. 6:es 4-6. For it is impossible, that's a

  581. strong word. For it is impossible for

  582. those who were once enlightened and have

  583. tasted the heavenly gift and have become

  584. partakers of the Holy Spirit and have

  585. tasted the good word of God and the

  586. powers of the age to come. If they fall

  587. away to renew them again to repentance

  588. since they crucify again for themselves

  589. the son of God and put him to an open

  590. shame.

  591. This is a warning the Hebrew writer is

  592. giving about those who have fallen away.

  593. Do you see the the persistent rebellion

  594. in that in those verses?

  595. They crucify again for themselves the

  596. son of God and put him open and sh open

  597. open shame. That is a willing

  598. willing participant in that of

  599. sinfulness and a heart that does not

  600. want to turn away from it. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  601. chapter 10, look at verses 26 and 27.

  602. Hebrews 10:es 26 and 27. For if we sin

  603. willfully after we have received the

  604. knowledge of the truth, there no longer

  605. remains a sacrifice for sins, but a

  606. certain fearful expectation of judgment

  607. and fiery indignation which will devour

  608. the adversaries. Here's yet again

  609. another warning the Hebrew writer gives

  610. of those who deliberately continue

  611. rejecting Christ after receiving the

  612. knowledge of the truth.

  613. Friends, in every case, in every case,

  614. the danger is not simply committing sin.

  615. The danger is refusing the only

  616. sacrifice that can remove sin. Those

  617. in the day of old

  618. rebelled against God.

  619. And look what you see even today that

  620. rebellion can still happen.

  621. Now when you start talking about what

  622. kind of practical lessons can we take

  623. from this,

  624. I believe that this passage teaches

  625. several important truths that I'm going

  626. to give you.

  627. First of all, I believe it teaches us to

  628. never minimize sin.

  629. Don't do it.

  630. John concludes all unrighteousness is

  631. sin. He wasn't saying, "Hey, there's one

  632. sin out there that doesn't lead to

  633. death." That was not what John was

  634. saying. We can't read it that way.

  635. That's not what he's saying because he

  636. makes it clear all unrighteous is sin.

  637. Sin is lawless. First John 3 and verse4.

  638. He's not going to contradict himself or

  639. any other scriptures.

  640. So we have to keep that in mind. All

  641. unrighteousness is sin. That's what he

  642. says in the text. Every sin matters.

  643. Dangerous. Second of all, I believe we

  644. find we are to pray for struggling

  645. Christians. I think that's another

  646. practical lesson. uh when we see a

  647. brother or sister stumbling and and uh

  648. they're falling away or they're they're

  649. having issues with with uh whatever it

  650. means. Well, we shouldn't be just going

  651. around and say, "Well, oh, so and so,

  652. look at them." You know, no, that's

  653. that's not it. It should not be

  654. condemnation, friends. We should resort

  655. to prayer. We should be prayerful for

  656. them. We should be looking out for them

  657. and to help them in whatever way that we

  658. possibly can. is something that we

  659. should not be arrogant or prideful in as

  660. we see even with the Corinthians. The

  661. Corinthians were allowing some things to

  662. go on. They were arrogant. They were

  663. boastful and and prideful. And that's

  664. when uh Paul had some things to say

  665. about that and said that that that the

  666. sin that was amongst them what they

  667. should have done was be sorrowful.

  668. They should have been upset about

  669. not a competition of saying, "Well, I'm

  670. better than that person because they

  671. struggle with that versus I don't have

  672. that part." Nope. That's

  673. can't do that.

  674. The third thing I give you is never

  675. allow your heart to become hardened.

  676. There's a lot to say on that on that

  677. very section there for that matter

  678. because the greatest danger is is not

  679. that one has sinned. I mean let's be

  680. honest, okay? Uh no one should be

  681. standing up here and say you know well

  682. you know once I became a Christian I

  683. have never sinned. Well that is a lie.

  684. Okay. All right let's speak. No every

  685. Christian has sinned.

  686. the danger and I'm gonna say the

  687. greatest danger is refusing to come

  688. back.

  689. You go through the Bible, David con

  690. committed terrible. I mean, you know, if

  691. we're if we're trying to do that, you

  692. know, say, "Oh, you know, what sins?"

  693. Think about the sins that we we talk

  694. about. David not too long ago,

  695. you know, I mean, look, one thing led to

  696. another. Adultery, murder is, you know,

  697. Peter denied Jesus. Yet yet when you

  698. look at those those very biblical

  699. characters, they both humbled themselves

  700. and returned to the Lord, right? The

  701. difference was not simply the the

  702. seriousness of the sin. It was the

  703. response to God's grace.

  704. And and that reminds me of what Paul

  705. told the Corinthian brethren about about

  706. godly sorrow that leads to what? What

  707. does it lead to? Repentance. What does

  708. worldly sorrow lead to? that Paul said,

  709. death,

  710. godly sorrow leads to repentance.

  711. And finally, the last thing I'll give

  712. you on this is uh practical lesson I I

  713. believe is is John reminds us once again

  714. where life is found. It's not in

  715. ourselves. It's not in good works. It's

  716. not in religious traditions. It's not in

  717. those. Life is found in Jesus Christ

  718. alone. And he made that clear. You

  719. reject Christ, there's only death.

  720. you abide in Christ, there's eternal

  721. life. Did Jesus not talk about that

  722. himself? Well, we know he did because

  723. when you go even to the book of John,

  724. yes, John, he talks about it, doesn't

  725. he? He talks about

  726. the uh using that very I am the vine,

  727. right? That's something that Scott was

  728. mentioning this morning. That's what you

  729. find him talking about. He talks about

  730. being the true shepherd. He he has all

  731. of these wonderful things and these very

  732. connections throughout and the book of

  733. Luke even. It's all right there for us

  734. to consider in that relationship with

  735. him.

  736. Abide in him. That's where eternal life

  737. is found.

  738. So

  739. perhaps the greatest lesson from this

  740. passage uh has sometimes been considered

  741. difficult passage uh is that John's

  742. emphasis is not on identifying one

  743. mysterious unforgivable act.

  744. His emphasis is on the contrast between

  745. those who continue in Christ and those

  746. who deliberately turn away from Christ.

  747. That's exactly what he's doing

  748. in his letter.

  749. Throughout this letter, John has

  750. repeatedly assured believers that they

  751. have what? With the father. Look at that

  752. in first John 2 verses one and two. I'd

  753. be aiss if I didn't bring this one. My

  754. little children, these things I write to

  755. you so that you may not sin. And if

  756. anyone sins,

  757. there it is. We have an advocate with

  758. the father, Jesus Christ the righteous,

  759. and he himself is the propitiation

  760. appeasement for our sins and not for

  761. ours only, but also for the whole world.

  762. What a great promise we have. What a

  763. great assurance we have that the blood

  764. of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all

  765. sin. And we saw that in 1 John 1 vers7

  766. earlier. And again, don't forget there's

  767. a two-letter word. It's called a

  768. conditional word. And that is if. If we

  769. walk in the light as he is in the light,

  770. we have fellowship with one another. And

  771. the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleans

  772. us from all sin. And we saw in first

  773. John 1 and verse 9, if that's that

  774. conditional word, if we confess our

  775. sins, he is faithful and just to forgive

  776. us our sins and to cleanse us from all

  777. unrighteousness. Friends, these promises

  778. should not be overshadowed by verses 16

  779. and 17 of first John chapter 5 where we

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  780. started our study.

  781. Rather, I believe in what we have

  782. studied briefly in this time together,

  783. they help explain them. Don't you think

  784. the warning is is not aimed at the

  785. struggling Christian who is seeking

  786. God's mercy who wants to live and desire

  787. to be right and and and live in in in

  788. accordance with God's will and be

  789. pleasing in his sight. It's aimed at the

  790. hardened heart that refuses the only

  791. savior who can give life.

  792. So the question is not well what is a

  793. sin leading to death. The greater

  794. question is just as we end the lesson,

  795. am I abiding in Christ? Because John has

  796. certainly answered that question

  797. clearly. He who has the son has life. He

  798. who does not have the son of God does

  799. not have life. Friends, that is plain to

  800. the tea, is it? He laid it out there. 1

    1 John 5:12

  801. John 5:12

  802. because he's saying look if you are in

  803. Christ and you are continuing walking in

  804. his light trusting his grace and praying

  805. for one another

  806. there's life in that

  807. but if you have wandered from him

  808. the invitation remains open

  809. that we are to not continue walking down

  810. that path in darkness where we can sear

  811. our own conscience like a hot iron.

  812. Right? Paul told Timothy of those words.

  813. We got to be careful that we come to our

  814. senses. You know, think about the prodal

  815. son, turn back

  816. faith, repentance to the one who

  817. described himself in John 14 and verse

  818. 6. I am the way, the truth, and the

  819. life. No one comes to the father but

  820. through me. Jesus said, because in him

  821. and in him alone

  822. is eternal life. Friends, that's the

  823. lesson. That's our Q&A for tonight. I

  824. certainly again appreciate the the

  825. questions that are submitted. It it is

  826. it is uh you know, I always have to

  827. figure out what am I going to preach on

  828. every Sunday. That's a hard job. All

  829. right. say, "Well, well, when you do a

  830. series, it's not so hard because I

  831. already got that planned out." Uh, but

  832. on Sunday nights especially, we spend

  833. this time and and looking at these

  834. questions, it uh it helps me because

  835. there's some things that I look at and

  836. these I'm like, you know, I never have

  837. thought about that in here as much. So,

  838. it helps me in my studies and and to to

  839. uh look to these passages and and study

  840. them myself and and prepare the lessons

  841. for you as we study together. So, I

  842. appreciate that so much for the

  843. invitation. Uh, if you haven't put on

  844. the body of Christ in baptism, you can

  845. do that tonight. Don't keep wandering

  846. away. If you know the truth, you know

  847. what you are to do, God's plan of

  848. salvation, don't leave here and and

  849. refuse to submit to God's will, God's

  850. plan, what he wants us to do to get in

  851. relationship with him through Jesus

  852. Christ. If you want to study more about

  853. God's plan of salvation, you let me

  854. know. Don't leave here without saying I

  855. need to talk with you DJ about this.

  856. This is so important because here's the

  857. realization.

  858. Just as a song that brother Mike Burton

  859. has selected for our invitation, guess

  860. what we need to be doing? We need to

  861. prepare to meet our God.

  862. Don't know when the day or the hour is.

  863. We need to be prepared to meet our God.

  864. That means we need to be walking in the

  865. light as he is in the light. That is

  866. paramount in our lives today. We need to

  867. be that example before others. We need

  868. to be teachers. We need to help others

  869. find that as well. So if you haven't

  870. follow the body of Christ baptism, you

  871. can do that this evening. All things

  872. stand ready. As a disciple of Christ,

  873. something that's a mission in your life,

  874. you need prayers on your behalf. Repent

  875. and turn from those things or or prayers

  876. for for strength, encouragement,

  877. whatever your spiritual need. Won't you

  878. come as we stand and sing the song

  879. that's been selected?
