  1. It is good to be here. I haven't been

  2. here for a while. Last time I was with

  3. the church here on a continuing basis.

  4. Had a week's meeting when brother Glenn

  5. Barnhard used to be here. That's been a

  6. few years. I don't know if any of you

  7. were around during that time, but that's

  8. how long it's been. And uh I've gotten a

  9. little grayer and hair has fallen out

  10. for some reason. Uh but anyway, still

  11. here, still kicking. glad that you're

  12. with us tonight. Appreciate the theme

  13. that you have chosen. Uh consider this

  14. week the book of James as the people

  15. that are here and thank you for being

  16. here folks from over at Liberty. Um as

  17. we've been talking about the last couple

  18. of weeks over there, book of James hits

  19. us where we don't like it. It's

  20. something that really makes us every

  21. chapter

  22. uh makes us really reflect. And I don't

  23. know how you are kind of makes me want

  24. to come forward every chapter because

  25. there's something in each chapter that

  26. you find in your own life and examining

  27. yourself and I think it's for that

  28. purpose to rattle us and to rock us and

  29. get us to wake up a little bit and to

  30. know that we cannot have an inactive

  31. faith. Every page, every chapter for

  32. virtually every verse of James calls us

  33. to action. An inactive faith is no

  34. faith. Told DJ that we could probably

  35. say that just end go home early, but

  36. haven't been around this long doing

  37. that. So, uh, turn to James uh, chapter

  38. 2 tonight.

  39. One issue that can plague us in our

  40. service to the Lord is in the first 13

  41. verses of chapter 2 is the challenge we

  42. have with judging things on the basis of

  43. how we see. It seems to me like or it

  44. looks to me like and making huge

  45. assumptions in people and about people.

  46. And James addresses that to start with

  47. in talking to us about activity in our

  48. faith. He says the first thing we have

  49. to have to do to be able to reach souls

  50. and to look out and see uh the people's

  51. needs out there is for us to understand

  52. that there is favoritism that we have

  53. and some of us don't like to admit that

  54. because it's just flatout bigotry

  55. uh in many cases and prejudice. Someone

  56. comes in and He uses the example here.

  57. The Greek word here that he uses for

  58. favoritism is propalpsia and

  59. partiality or favoritism. And it was

  60. used by the Greeks and the consistently

  61. negative connotation of making judgments

  62. solely on the basis of a person's

  63. appearance

  64. or status

  65. or other external things. All carnal.

  66. And as a result of that having a

  67. prejudiced mind that it renders itself

  68. inactive in the care of the person's

  69. soul. So the issue in the first 13

  70. verses of James chapter 2 is favoritism.

    James 2 chapter mention

  71. Can I play favorites? The powerful point

  72. he makes here to start with is having

  73. faith in Jesus, having the faith of a

  74. Christian and showing favoritism is

  75. incompatible.

  76. We just cannot. And there were times in

  77. our society and there have been times

  78. throughout history that favoritism has

  79. played a large role. I was commenting

  80. talking to some people and we brought it

  81. up several times in their Bible study in

  82. Liberty that the world and the es in the

  83. first century probably didn't look a lot

  84. like ours.

  85. The people of the first century, if you

  86. read the book of Galatians, it was

  87. settled by the Gauls. The Gauls were

  88. pretty much uh the mercenary soldiers of

  89. the day. They went for the highest price

  90. to go fight the battles. They probably

  91. were pretty rough looking group of

  92. people. the church at Carth. Those

  93. people came from very jaded backgrounds

  94. and they would not have been doing

  95. polite things and we might have made us

  96. uncomfortable to be there with them. And

  97. that was what was going on. You had

  98. Gentiles, Jew, you would have the

  99. problem that may exist there that could

  100. have existed where a Jew was under the

  101. leadership or the being shepherded by a

  102. gentile or vice versa. A slave may be an

  103. elder or a deacon in a congregation and

  104. the master be a servant. That could have

  105. happened. There is no room for plain

  106. favorites and for prejudice when we all

  107. call ourselves after Christ all bought

  108. by the same blood. And we are here by

  109. the grace of God and we are who we are

  110. by his grace.

  111. In one community of people in the world

  112. where everyone receives equal

  113. treatment, it should be the church. We

  114. alone of all the places in the world

  115. should be a haven against prejudice. We

  116. have to ask ourselves are we

  117. are we have you ever worshiped in a

  118. congregation

  119. anywhere in the world where you were the

  120. person that was the minority

  121. where the sermon went on and the

  122. language was different from yours and

  123. you felt like such an outsider. How were

  124. you treated?

  125. my experience and Carla's experience as

  126. we've traveled, we were treated with the

  127. utmost care and respect and

  128. accommodation,

  129. but I'm not sure we would be willing to

  130. do that in our society. It's kind of

  131. taken a leave.

  132. But we do understand that these things

  133. are still a potential problem with us

  134. even in our local groups if we're not

  135. careful. And I don't know if you all sit

  136. at the same place all the time. Probably

  137. some of you do. But far be it from

  138. anybody to move around and get to know

  139. somebody else. We can become very

  140. clickish as brethren. We have our

  141. favorites, the people we like to come

  142. see. And nothing wrong with having

  143. people that are our friends that we're

  144. closer to. Nothing wrong with that. But

  145. we don't leave the others out. I have

  146. any congregation that I've ever preached

  147. at or been to in a meeting. There are

  148. always the people that seems to hang

  149. around a little bit, but nobody talks to

  150. them and they leave and nobody said

  151. hello. Nobody's gone and greeted them.

  152. How are you doing, brother, sister? And

  153. so they are they become outsiders

  154. while they're still in the same group as

  155. we all are. And nobody notices them, the

  156. unnoticeable people. And we can become

  157. very clickish if we're not careful. And

  158. I think that's where this really hits us

  159. is in this situation. We're hopefully

  160. long past the racial prejudices that may

  161. have been a problem in the 50. Well,

  162. they were in the early 50s and 60s in

  163. our country. But hopefully we're beyond

  164. that. But in during that time, I was in

  165. congregations in Georgia and Alabama and

  166. one in Georgia when we converted a man

  167. that was that was black. Uh some of the

  168. members said they were going to stop

  169. coming.

  170. Well, the men met together and they

  171. said, "Well, we're going to miss you.

  172. Going to miss you." We There was a

  173. brother who was blind. It was a black

  174. man that we convert that was converted.

  175. And people got to talking about him. He

  176. heard had keen hearing and he said to

  177. the preacher, he said, "Go ahead and

  178. tell them that I'm blind and I've heard

  179. that I may be a problem for them. I'm

  180. blind to what color they are and tell

  181. them I'm okay if they are." Well, the

  182. good thing about that was it called them

  183. on what they had been doing and

  184. everybody rallied to come and be kinder

  185. to that man even though they had

  186. prejudices.

  187. Having the Having the faith that God

  188. wants us to have enables us to overcome

  189. all of those prejudices

  190. and we must do that in order to be

  191. pleasing to the Lord. Tax collectors,

  192. publicans, IRS people, they are they

  193. have souls too. And we have to

  194. understand the religiously elite would

  195. look down their nose at that. And that

  196. was a carryover from Judaism.

  197. Now the way he treats this in verses 2

  198. and four if you follow here in James 2

  199. reading through verses 2 through 4 look

  200. at this scenario. The poor man comes

  201. into the assembly and he is not treated

  202. equally

  203. not only because of his appearance but

  204. other reasons. The rich man comes to the

  205. assembly and he is treated very well and

  206. honored and they don't even really know

  207. who he is. The rich man is preferred

  208. because of the way he appears, he looks.

  209. He gets the chief seat. The poor man

  210. comes in and he gets dismissed and put

  211. on the side or on the shelf and becomes

  212. inconspicuous.

  213. And James asks this question.

  214. Are you not partial?

  215. You may say to everybody in the world, I

  216. am not prejudic.

  217. Really, that's what he says. You are

  218. too. You are partial.

  219. In Matthew chapter 7 and verse one,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  220. favoritism talked about here is a direct

  221. violation of what Jesus talked about

  222. that we all get accused of of judging

  223. the wrong way.

  224. Judge not that you be not judged, for

  225. with whatsoever manner of judgment you

  226. judge others, you will also be judged

  227. yourself. So we are to recognize that

  228. there is an ungodly judgment and this is

  229. one of them and our faith can bring us

  230. out of that if it's the type of faith

  231. the Lord gives.

  232. One of the things that we look at I

  233. don't I don't guess in my whole

  234. preaching life that I have ever given

  235. this passage these 13 verses the

  236. attention that they need.

  237. And that that's to my shame.

  238. And some people say, "Well, we don't

  239. have that problem anymore. In a little

  240. different way, we do."

  241. Um,

  242. you don't treat people different because

  243. now he brings out the point why

  244. favoritism is foolish behind here. Uh,

  245. God chose the poor to be rich in faith.

  246. And he said this before that it is the

  247. poorer people who have less distractions

  248. that are more willing to listen and have

  249. their lives changed. The richer people

  250. have their lives pretty well set and

  251. they don't want to be disturbed. But it

  252. is the poorer person who has a richer

  253. heart who has a heart that can be

  254. touched and can be reached more willing

  255. more humble because of his status in

  256. life. He doesn't have a lot of

  257. distractions. He doesn't have anything.

  258. And so he is an open invitation to every

  259. blessing God gives him and appreciative

  260. of every one of them. In Luke chapter 6

    Luke 6:20

  261. verse 20, if you part of the good news

  262. of the gospel is that it's available to

  263. everybody.

  264. Turn to Acts chapter 8 for just a

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  265. minute. want to talk to you about a man

  266. that we all know and he was doesn't have

  267. a name that we know of but he had one we

  268. just don't know but he's a unic

  269. now to be a he's gone to Jerusalem to

  270. worship now not being a naturalb born

  271. Jew an Ethiopian Jew he would have not

  272. had access to the worship place he would

  273. have been in the courtyard of the

  274. gentile or the procel and he would not

  275. have had the equal access but traveled

  276. all the way from Ethiopia to praise God

  277. and worship him and he was going back

  278. home. Not only that, but he was a unic

  279. and he would have not had even a a good

  280. poor position in the crowd because he

  281. was a unic

  282. and that was against the law too.

  283. Generally speaking, under the old law,

  284. you were lesser.

  285. So the Jewish world the gentile world

  286. collide in Christ.

  287. How are you going to treat one another?

  288. Big deal.

  289. Have you ever found yourself as you

  290. travel around the country wondering

  291. where the church is in the community and

  292. what we're really asking is where's the

  293. nearest white church?

  294. May be a black church right there,

  295. Hispanic congregation.

  296. But we're looking for what? People like

  297. us.

  298. Nothing wrong with that necessarily. But

  299. we don't need need to delete people as

  300. maybe they're not faithful. We need to

  301. check them out too. Maybe they would

  302. enjoy a visit from us and be encouraged.

  303. They are our brethren.

  304. Now, favoritism and prejudice is wrong

  305. because it violates God's own attitude

  306. toward us.

  307. God's attitude toward us is without

  308. favorism. He is not a respector of

  309. persons, neither does he want his people

  310. to be.

  311. Luke 6:20 reading here, blessed are you

    Luke 6:20

  312. who were poor, for yours is the kingdom.

  313. So again, with with much goods comes the

  314. distractions

  315. increasing, the tending of those goods.

  316. Solomon said that in Ecclesiastes with

  317. much goods or as much pain, as much

  318. heartache sometimes because what? You're

  319. worried about your stuff.

  320. You let a hurricane be announced here,

  321. everybody will be protecting their

  322. stuff.

  323. Nothing wrong with that, but it can be a

  324. distraction. Many people will miss

  325. services. That's not seeking the kingdom

  326. first to protect their stuff.

  327. And so the rich in this world are not

  328. often the ones that are the most

  329. receptive. Who did Jesus who heard Jesus

  330. gladly?

  331. The common man, the everyday guy.

  332. Who were the rich and the honored? They

  333. were trying to think up the next tricky

  334. question.

  335. They were trying to think up the next

  336. way to kill him, next opportunity.

  337. Now the sinfulness of playing favorites

  338. and he brings this out. It is the rich

  339. that oppress you. It is the rich that

  340. blasphe the name of Christ. It is the

  341. rich who violate the royal law to do

  342. unto others as you would have them do

  343. unto you.

  344. James 2 and verse 9 very clearly states

  345. that that type of behavior is sinful.

  346. There's no there's no

  347. running around the stump with that.

  348. straight to the heart hits us. If it

  349. pierces us, it pierces us. No apology

  350. given at all. If you're a prejudice

  351. person, if you are playing favorites,

  352. now let's let's get a little closer. Oh,

  353. you play favorites with your kids,

  354. you're going to destroy your home.

  355. They'll they'll see it very quickly.

  356. If you play favorites in the body of

  357. Christ, if you play favorites as elders

  358. in the body of Christ, have to be

  359. careful.

  360. And especially with what buildings cost

  361. these days, one of the challenges that

  362. may move us back to renting the

  363. storefronts is if you're going to have

  364. to invest a million, $2 million, $12

  365. million in a building,

  366. then you're also going to have the

  367. problem with the biggest contributors

  368. because you've got to keep all of the

  369. bills paid. It's the rich that will be

  370. favored if not if we're not very

  371. careful. and maybe overlooked in things

  372. they might do that we would hold them

  373. for accountable. See the challenge that

  374. comes with it. Now that's just a

  375. challenge. That doesn't have to be the

  376. case. We and certainly shouldn't.

  377. If someone that is rich is unfaithful,

  378. then we withdraw from them too.

  379. And we cannot be respectctors of

  380. persons.

  381. In James chapter 2 and verse 13, he

    James 2 chapter mention

  382. brings up a point of mercy.

  383. Being merciful to people is a part of

  384. the law and we don't get to pick and

  385. choose who we're merciful to.

  386. We are to show mercy to all.

  387. Mercy is given commensurate to the mercy

  388. shown. That's the point of verse 13.

  389. All souls are val.

  390. When you go out and you do personal

  391. work, we used to do it doortodoor. We

  392. had great deal of success doing that.

  393. Still is one option today.

  394. But when I was doing it, I almost

  395. walked around an old trailer.

  396. It had hogs rooting up underneath it and

  397. it did not have a sidewalk.

  398. And I was dressed pretty nice.

  399. I I would have gotten my shoes real

  400. messed up. So I just decided maybe walk

  401. around that. Then I got to go about go

  402. knock on that door. Now the problem with

  403. knocking on the door is there wasn't a

  404. door and I didn't know what I was going

  405. to do. So I was a little bit afraid.

  406. So I knocked on the door. A man comes.

  407. He's got one eye. His glass eye is out

  408. in the socket. And he comes there. He's

  409. got overalls on. Only thing between him

  410. and God. And he says, "Come on in."

  411. first invitation I'd had all day to come

  412. in. I said, "I want to talk to you about

  413. the Bible. You got a Bible?" "Well, I

  414. do, but can't read."

  415. Said, "Well, really?" I said, "Could I

  416. read some passages to you?" "I'd

  417. appreciate that," he said. So, we sat

  418. down and we ended up he is a pulpwood.

  419. He had a crew that he worked with and we

  420. baptized Hubard How

  421. and Hubard would come to services. one

  422. of the best personal workers we had

  423. because he held his workers hostage

  424. because they had to ride the home with

  425. him because they were drunk. Well, he'd

  426. bring them to services

  427. and they'd come in and they were a

  428. little lit, but he would make sure that

  429. they behaved themselves

  430. and ends up that Hubard not only brought

  431. himself to Christ and but he also was

  432. influential in others hearing the

  433. gospel.

  434. When Hubard obeyed the gospel, he went

  435. out, which is on a Friday night. He went

  436. out Saturday morning, and he bought him

  437. a new pair

  438. of overalls.

  439. Those were his Sunday overalls. He

  440. bought him a new flannel shirt,

  441. Sunday shirt. And he bought him some

  442. Sunday broands.

  443. And he would come dressed up.

  444. He brought his granddaughter with him

  445. sometimes. She didn't like shoes, so she

  446. didn't wear them. Some of the ladies

  447. thought, "Can we give them some

  448. clothes?" I said, "We can, but I think

  449. you want to make her think she's not up

  450. to it." So, they were careful about it.

  451. But the bottom line is you have to be

  452. careful and considerate, but know this,

  453. their souls were valuable, and I almost

  454. let it go.

  455. Shame on me

  456. and shame on us.

  457. There are several members of the church

  458. that I know that make up bags

  459. for the people that are pan handlers on

  460. the street. And in those bags, they put

  461. a New Testament,

  462. put a dollar or two in there, a bottle

  463. of water, and a pack of trash.

  464. They put a track

  465. and they give them away.

  466. They are so regular about it that the

  467. people begin to know their names.

  468. But those have souls? Yes. Do they look

  469. like us? No.

  470. Are some of them crooked? Absolutely.

  471. But they have a soul that can be reached

  472. with the gospel. And the gospel is

  473. powerful enough to get them off the

  474. street.

  475. So, we need to understand that that

  476. favoritism and reaching the lost cannot

  477. tolerate

  478. selectiveness in who we talk to. I'll

  479. talk to people that are like me. I don't

  480. talk to

  481. He's given a shot. Your Muslim neighbor,

  482. he's got a soul.

  483. The Jehovah's Witness that comes to the

  484. door, they've got a soul. Mormon, they

  485. got a soul. And you may make progress

  486. and you may not. But what do you do? You

  487. try. It's our job to sew the seed. The

  488. Lord brings the increase. Are we doing

  489. that? Turn to James 2:es 14-1 17 now.

  490. And we'll talk here about what James

  491. says about dead faith.

  492. Dead faith avoids service because dead

  493. faith is possessed by those who are not

  494. servants.

  495. They are convenient Christians. As long

  496. as it's not uncomfortable for them to

  497. serve the Lord, they will. But if it

  498. requires activity on their part, they're

  499. not going to do it. Excuses. I'm old.

  500. I'm busy. I have this going on. I have

  501. that They've got a hundred excuses for

  502. their inactivity. But the bottom bottom

  503. line is they don't have an excuse.

  504. They don't have any reason.

  505. Turn to Hebrews 11 11 and verse one and

  506. it's a whole treatise of examples in the

  507. first chapter, first part of the chapter

  508. of Old Testament characters who walk by

  509. faith. It talks about at creation. All

  510. things were created by faith.

  511. things that were were made.

  512. Things that are seen are made by things

  513. that were unseen.

  514. And we either believe that or we don't.

  515. But right at the beginning, the Lord

  516. calls upon us to have faith in how

  517. things came to about came about.

  518. James starts very quickly in James 2:14

    James 2:14

  519. and he poses this question. Does it do

  520. any good see the needs of people

  521. and merely wish them well.

  522. Well, ask them if they have needs, they

  523. tell you they do, and you go, "Well, I

  524. hope you get that taken care of."

  525. Have you done them any good?

  526. Hope you find warm. You're hot, you're

  527. cold, hope you find some warm. You're

  528. hungry, hope you find some food. Hope

  529. somebody can help. Not me.

  530. Turn if you will to the story of the

  531. good Samaritan. Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10:25–37

  532. verse 25-37. And we'll see something

  533. about that. Every last one of those

  534. people that came upon the beggar on the

  535. highway or the man on the highway. They

  536. all saw the need.

  537. Every one of them knew something needed

  538. to be done. But only one had active pain

  539. and put himself on the line.

  540. The two that you would expect to do

  541. that,

  542. the Levite, the priest, you would think,

  543. well, certainly they'll take care of

  544. that.

  545. It was the one that they looked at as a

  546. dog

  547. that took his time and invested his he

  548. had things to do, too.

  549. He was going somewhere. He suspended his

  550. trip, took care of the problem and did

  551. what?

  552. Extended himself and put himself on the

  553. line financially to help the problem

  554. and told the inkeeper whatever else he

  555. needs, take care of it, and I'll pay you

  556. when I get back. Don't put it to his

  557. account. He didn't ask the guy if he

  558. could pay anything. He didn't insist

  559. that you need to pay me back. and did

  560. anything.

  561. He took care of it himself. It took

  562. time. It took investment. And it took

  563. tremendous concern for the man that

  564. moved him to action. Not just there's a

  565. need.

  566. A need met with action. So he is

  567. portrayed well by the Lord.

  568. But that had stung the Pharisees

  569. that the Lord would use a Samaritan to

  570. teach them a lesson. He did.

  571. Matthew 13 verse 13, the description of

    Matthew 13:13

  572. the Pharisees and the scribes was that

  573. hearing they don't hear

  574. and seeing they don't see

  575. and what they hear affects them very

  576. little. and what they see affects them

  577. very well.

  578. Give you a test here. How many times has

  579. DJ preached a lesson from God's word and

  580. the passages hit you hard

  581. and you go, "Ouch." Maybe you may say

  582. these things to him. Well, you know, you

  583. really stepped on my toes today.

  584. Brother Irvin Lee, I think, was the

  585. first I ever heard said, "Well, I'm

  586. sorry. I was reaching for your heart.

  587. A heart change is an inside out job.

  588. The Lord has given us a powerful word to

  589. change our hearts and we'll either allow

  590. it to take place or we will ignore it.

  591. God will not make you change your heart.

  592. Jesus never made anyone change your

  593. heart. A miracle never made a heart

  594. change. It made people notice the words

  595. that were spoken. But it is always the

  596. words that had to penetrate and prick

  597. the heart.

  598. Now we

  599. can say that we believe

  600. we can say I have great faith.

  601. But if we hear truth and do not apply

  602. it,

  603. if we see our error, if we see our

  604. problem and we don't correct it, do we

  605. have faith?

  606. James says, "No,

  607. you're no different from a demon.

  608. Faith without works is dead."

  609. I don't know how many Calvinists I've

  610. talked to, even some in the body of

  611. Christ that are pretending that way

  612. these days.

  613. But we say, and rightly so, that James 2

  614. says, "You must have works. You can't

  615. just be saved by faith.

  616. Galatians 3:26

    Galatians 3:26

  617. all children of God through faith in

  618. Christ Jesus for as many of you as have

  619. been baptized into Christ and put on

  620. Christ. What is that? The point we make

  621. is what? Faith in works. Right

  622. now, it's not faith in your works.

  623. It's faith doing the works, moving you

  624. to do the works that God has told you to

  625. do. obedience. An obedient thing that

  626. moves you to be uncomfortable until you

  627. get it right. To squirm until you get it

  628. right, to lose sleep until you get it

  629. right,

  630. and to pray and to ask the Lord to

  631. tenderize your heart.

  632. By the way, have you developed a

  633. hardened heart as a Christian?

  634. Do things not bother you anymore? Have

  635. you ever said these words, "Well, those

  636. things bother other people, but I'm so

  637. used to it at at the plant that those

  638. words that cussing or whatever is going

  639. on or those jokes, they don't even

  640. bother me anymore. You need to take your

  641. boss

  642. spiritually. We need to be in what

  643. happened with what is said about

  644. Lot.

  645. The Hebrew writer says his righteous

  646. soul was vexed daily.

  647. Everything else that happened a lot in

  648. Sodom is recorded for us. But that is in

  649. Hebrews and it tells us the man was

  650. heartbroken every day when he saw the

  651. way people were living. It bothered him,

  652. but he stayed there. When he stayed

  653. there, his kids were affected.

  654. And he and his two girls left Sodom. His

  655. wife didn't make it. And Sodom was in

  656. the heart of those girls.

  657. They did vile things with their father.

  658. Did they know it was wrong? Yeah.

  659. Did they make it seem like it would be

  660. okay? Did they compromise

  661. knowing that they would be wrong?

  662. In order for me to realize a brother or

  663. sister is in need or has a problem, for

  664. me to look out on my brethren and see

  665. their need, it's going to take two

  666. things. My concern for them, my love for

  667. them, my care for them, but it's also

  668. going to require them to let us know if

  669. they have.

  670. If somebody asked you, "Do you need

  671. anything?" What's your first love about

  672. this?

  673. I can handle it when really you you're

  674. not doing too well.

  675. So open communication with one another.

  676. And that's not saying I'm going to throw

  677. everything on the brother and just

  678. become a case all the time. No, but if

  679. we are we if we're having challenges and

  680. we're going through struggle, talk to

  681. one another.

  682. Talk with one another as brethren. Let

  683. it be known if you have needs that need

  684. to be addressed by the brethren.

  685. We can't read minds and we dare not be s

  686. James 2:18-20

    James 2:18–20

  687. deals with this useless faith disobys.

  688. A useless faith allows disobedience. It

  689. tolerates it in our life. We have little

  690. pockets of our lives often times where

  691. we have our little things that we know

  692. we're weak in, but rather than become

  693. stronger in it, we just resign

  694. ourselves. Oh well, that's my weakness.

  695. >> No,

  696. Bible faith doesn't allow that.

  697. Imagine trying to prove to somebody that

  698. you have faith, but you can't show them

  699. anything.

  700. Can anybody got any faith in your

  701. pocket?

  702. pull it out.

  703. Here's my faith.

  704. You don't. Do you?

  705. The point he's making here is true Bible

  706. faith is only shown

  707. through works.

  708. And faith without that

  709. is not faith.

  710. So are sometimes we as Christians acting

  711. faithless.

  712. Fact is, we are.

  713. I believe in God. I love the Lord God.

  714. He's with all of my heart, soul, and

  715. mind. How much you're willing to invest

  716. in him? Well, you know, I'll leave that

  717. to other people. The older say, I'll

  718. leave it to the younger. The younger say

  719. I'll leave it to the old. I'm too old to

  720. serve the Lord like I used to. Well, who

  721. said? Where is the retirement plan?

  722. Where is the age of retirement the Lord

  723. allows Christians to have? No, there's

  724. not one in here.

  725. There is work to do. Your level of

  726. activity or you usefulness with physical

  727. health may be minimal, but there's

  728. something you can do.

  729. Verses 19- 20,

  730. James says this.

  731. One says, "I have faith."

  732. Great.

  733. How do we know you have faith? Because I

  734. say I have faith.

  735. One says, "I have faith." One says, "I

  736. have works." Show me your faith without

  737. your works, and I by my works will show

  738. you my faith.

  739. Then the person says, "Well, I've got

  740. faith." Well, how is it shown? Well, I

  741. don't do anything, but I've got faith.

  742. Okay? You ever had a wavered person tell

  743. you, "I'm not losing my faith. I've

  744. still got my faith. Where is it?

  745. You have lost your faith.

  746. Absenting yourself from the assemblies

  747. of the saints.

  748. Not praying like you should. Not

  749. studying like you should. Not serving

  750. like you ought. Not encouraging your

  751. brethren to love in good works like you

  752. should. You have lost your faith. You

  753. don't have your faith. You have a belief

  754. in God as opposed to a belief in Allah.

  755. But that's it. That's where it stops and

  756. ends.

  757. But the active faith of the Bible, you

  758. don't have.

  759. You put it on the shelf. You hung it up.

  760. You retired it. And it used to move you

  761. to such things.

  762. In verses 19 through 20, he says, "Good

  763. for you that you have that type of faith

  764. because guess what? So do the demons."

  765. The demons know who Jesus is and they

  766. know exactly who he is and they will say

  767. they said who he was. Thou son of God.

  768. So they confessed him.

  769. They had faith that he existed and they

  770. confessed that he did. Well, that's

  771. about as far as some brethren go, isn't

  772. it?

  773. Words but no action.

  774. But what did the demons do? They

  775. actively worked against the Lord. What

  776. did Jesus say about that? If you're not

  777. for me, where are you? You're against

  778. me. If you're not active in service for

  779. me, then you're not there.

  780. You see how James really hits us? Makes

  781. us squirm a little bit. It's

  782. uncomfortable.

  783. James moves from calling faith dead to

  784. calling it useless. Verse 20,

  785. the faith of a demon is a useless faith.

  786. And the faith of a child of God that

  787. does not have activity to show their

  788. faith and works to accompany their faith

  789. is just as useless.

  790. Verse 18, show me your faith without

  791. your works, and I by my faith will show

  792. you my works.

  793. Which is easier?

  794. Having a way to demonstrate your faith?

  795. So faith without works is useless.

  796. James then goes in verses 21- 26 as he

  797. concludes the chapter and we made the

  798. chapter differences he didn't uh James

  799. comes and describes just what saving

  800. faith really is and that it moves and it

  801. obeys and he does two positive

  802. illustrations about Abraham

  803. and he calls us back to the altar where

  804. Abraham was called by God to offer offer

  805. his son Isaac on the altar

  806. to sacrifice his own son.

  807. Several things in that narrative in

  808. Genesis.

  809. He got up early in the morning to do the

  810. deed.

  811. He was urgent about it.

  812. He traveled great distance. He got to

  813. the place and he continued to move. He

  814. didn't have take some time off.

  815. and he took Isaac up there. He told his

  816. servant before they left, "We'll be

  817. back."

  818. How do he know that?

  819. He operated on faith.

  820. He believed that even if he had to kill

  821. Isaac, the Lord could raise him

  822. and the Lord would provide.

  823. But God called him to do something and

  824. he as good as did it. And I want you to

  825. notice he didn't stop short.

  826. You just think of your children, not

  827. when they're misbehaving, but when

  828. they're behaving.

  829. And you've got a knife

  830. and you have the choice of to come down

  831. with it and slay your child

  832. or to hold up.

  833. What do you do?

  834. Abraham's faith moved him to come down

  835. with it

  836. and it was imputed to him as if he had

  837. done it. He did what God told him to do.

  838. Although he didn't take the child life,

  839. God did not accept that. Didn't take him

  840. that far.

  841. But Abraham moved by faith all the way

  842. to doing something that would be

  843. arguably one of the most awful things

  844. that a parent would ever have to do.

  845. But he was ready.

  846. Abraham and Sarah are brought up in

  847. other passages in Hebrews 11

  848. as being ready to go to a place they had

  849. never seen because God said go. And he

  850. you went home evidently. He said,

  851. "Sarah, pack up." I'll tell you ladies,

  852. ready for your husband to say that?

  853. Where you where we going? Well, we're

  854. moving. Where are we moving? I don't

  855. know.

  856. Will your faith take you that far?

  857. Sarah had faith, too.

  858. And she was ready to go, too. And they

  859. went. They followed through on it. They

  860. kept going.

  861. And it take faith to come to the sea,

  862. the Red Sea, and to walk in the middle

  863. of it.

  864. Would you have been first?

  865. I'd have been hanging back a little bit.

  866. So, you go right ahead.

  867. when you see when you see and isn't that

  868. kind of indicative of our life? If I see

  869. the end before I start, I'm okay.

  870. But if I don't know how this is going to

  871. end up, Peter started well when he

  872. started walking on the water. He'd never

  873. done that before. He was a seaman. He

  874. was a fisherman. He knew the storms on

  875. the Sea of Galilee. He knew how violent

  876. they could get. He got out of the boat

  877. and started walking.

  878. That's tremendous faith.

  879. doing something no man mere man had ever

  880. done. Only Jesus. And so he walked

  881. and he was fine. And the Lord tells him,

  882. "You of little faith.

  883. Why didn't your faith take you to me,

  884. Peter? Why didn't you keep your eye on

  885. me? Why didn't you get distracted from

  886. all the storms?" James starts James 1

  887. that way. You probably heard that this

  888. morning. Trials work for what? To build

  889. up. And God, it's not his fault when I

  890. have trials or or struggles. He doesn't

  891. tempt me.

  892. Notice in Genesis 15, after the Lord

  893. promised him numerous people, numerous

  894. offspring, it says Abraham believed God

  895. and it was accounted to him for

  896. righteousness.

  897. He is righteous before God. Why? Because

  898. he acted on his faith.

  899. When his heart and his act and his

  900. actions were combined, they gave him an

  901. assurance that God was pleased with him.

  902. You want to have saving faith, put

  903. yourself in Abraham's shoes

  904. and do things that you've never done.

  905. Notice several young men here in the

  906. audience

  907. make the point a lot about the first

  908. time you serve publicly.

  909. I've been preaching the gospel full-time

  910. forif over 50 years now.

  911. And I want to tell you, my dad told me

  912. when I started, he said, "If your knees

  913. ever stop shaking,

  914. get out of the pit.

  915. We're not selling cars.

  916. We're presenting the gospel."

  917. That is a tremendous responsibility.

  918. When you get up and you do the table,

  919. that's a tremendous responsibility.

  920. You're going to be nervous. You ought to

  921. be.

  922. But if you prepared yourself to do it

  923. and you have your notes and use notes

  924. first time you pray, try it. Stretch

  925. yourself to go where you haven't been

  926. and be glad to do it because what

  927. happened? Your faith grows and it's

  928. easier the next time. And the Lord needs

  929. workers and you can be one of them. If

  930. you're not doing that, start.

  931. Faith has to be demonstrated to be seen.

  932. If a man has faith but doesn't have

  933. works, can their faith save him?

  934. No salvation is accomplished by an

  935. inactive faith.

  936. My own actions save me. I've decided to

  937. do this for Lord and that for the

  938. to do God's works. That's where the

  939. salvation comes.

  940. James is teaching that our faith that is

  941. inactive

  942. and inactivated faith is a dull faith.

  943. The right type of faith also calls us to

  944. serve without looking around to see who

  945. else is doing it. What shall this man

  946. do? What did Jesus tell Peter when he

  947. asked that? What are these guys going to

  948. do? Jesus said, "If I want them to stay

  949. right where they are and do nothing till

  950. judgment, what's that to you? I told you

  951. to go feed my sheep."

  952. And the Lord says the same thing to us.

  953. We don't look and say, "How many other

  954. people are serving?" We're first up

  955. there.

  956. I don't know if y'all have business

  957. meetings here. Do you? Okay, men. I want

  958. to take you to I don't want to take you

  959. into a business meeting. All of us.

  960. Okay. It's a different place to be.

  961. Okay. But you go into the business

  962. meeting and some agenda is presented.

  963. All kinds of things need to be done and

  964. then you open the floor for discussion.

  965. Crickets.

  966. Well, who's going to do this?

  967. Everybody looks down.

  968. Does it need to be done?

  969. Which one of us is going to take the

  970. reigns? and and and get that done.

  971. Or maybe in a business meeting and you

  972. need a go a church building, this comes

  973. up. Well, we can do it ourselves

  974. cheaper. Okay. How many are going to be

  975. there Saturday morning?

  976. What is that? That's a belief that a

  977. that's an admitting that a situation

  978. exists that needs to be handled, but

  979. nobody wants to do it.

  980. So that's where this comes in.

  981. When God tells us we have something to

  982. do, it needs to get done

  983. and it needs to be done with speed

  984. and with preciseness.

  985. If Jesus had had the faith that some of

  986. us as Christians have occasionally, he

  987. would have never gone to the cross

  988. because he had other options.

  989. But he did it out of total service to

  990. others. Total subjection to what he had

  991. made himself

  992. to his creation. He submitted himself to

  993. God.

  994. There was a time when you came forward

  995. or you called somebody at night and they

  996. met you up here and you were baptized

  997. into Christ. Do you remember the

  998. freshness, the zeal, the fervor you had

  999. when your sins were first washed away?

  1000. You know what happens?

  1001. All too often

1002. that zeal begins to wayne

1003. and we get talked out of. We get

1004. discouraged. People say, "Well, you're

1005. too on fire." You can't be too on fire

  1006. for the Lord.

1007. And you need to be ready and willing to

1008. serve. Some of the best personal workers

1009. in the church are the new converts

1010. because they were just saved from their

  1011. sins.

1012. Questions for us to consider from this

1013. chapter. Do I have true Bible faith?

1014. How active is my faith?

1015. What do I do with my Bible study?

1016. Whoever's teaching the class puts a lot

1017. of time in the preparation.

1018. And if we're not careful, even as those

1019. that prepare the lesson, we can let that

1020. be the end of our Bible study. We don't

1021. have any personal Bible study. I tell

1022. you, getting a Bible lesson together is

1023. important, but I tell you what, your own

1024. personal study is important, too. You

  1025. need to grow.

1026. Do I know something more that I can do

1027. better in service to God? Something that

1028. I could do better? Is there a place that

  1029. I could step up?

1030. Do I have the faith to teach and

1031. approach a friend or a loved one with

  1032. the gospel?

1033. Time's moving on, folks. Noticed.

1034. And out of nowhere, things can happen to

1035. us, especially in this traffic.

1036. And we not may not make it to services.

  1037. There's urgency.

1038. Do I really believe the gospel is

1039. powerful enough to change my neighbor,

1040. my loved one, my husband, my wife?

1041. Or do I give excuses like, "Well, they

1042. need to hear it, but I don't want to

1043. chase them away." Well, where are they?

1044. How much further are you going to chase

1045. them? They're out of Christ. What's the

1046. worst could happen? They'll still be out

  1047. of Christ.

1048. How could I be quiet about Christ

1049. if I have true faith? Acts four, Acts

1050. five. When they were told, don't you say

1051. anything else about Christ, what did

1052. they say? We cannot help but speak the

1053. things that we've seen and heard through

1054. the eyes of faith. Folks, we've seen

1055. what they see and we dare not hold it to

1056. ourselves. Having a cure for toxic sin

1057. and we do not share it.

1058. Book of Acts is a winning story from

1059. beginning to end. Were there defeats?

1060. Yes. Were there persecutions? Yes. But

1061. overall, what did you have? Sewing the

  1062. seed.

1063. Did you Did Jesus baptize everybody that

1064. he talked to? Did he Did everybody

1065. change that Jesus? No. And they won't

  1066. for you either.

1067. But sewing the seed was being done with

  1068. urgency. They went everywhere

  1069. preaching the gospel.

1070. Ask yourself this. Is God pleased with

1071. my present level of faith?

1072. And as you answer these questions, if

  1073. there are things lacking,

1074. what will you do about it?

1075. What's the purpose of this meeting?

1076. It's to encourage us as Christians, but

1077. also to call us to task if we're not

1078. doing what we should be doing. Call us

1079. to higher things and better things.

1080. Think seriously about where you are in

  1081. relationship to the Lord.

1082. Get your book if you want to or no,

1083. don't do get your book. It's up here.

  1084. Can't do that anymore.

1085. Have you ever run across somebody that

1086. says, "I only want to do what Jesus

  1087. said.

1088. If Jesus didn't say it, I'm not going to

  1089. do it." Okay,

1090. let's call their blood. Here it is. Did

1091. Jesus ever talk about hearing?

  1092. Luke 11:28

    Luke 11:28

1093. Jesus said, "Yay, rather blessed are

1094. those that hear the word of God and

1095. what? Keep it." Not just hear, but keep.

1096. Jesus say anything about faith? No.

1097. Therefore, I say to you that you'll die

1098. in your sins. For if you do not believe

1099. that I am he, you will die in your sins.

  1100. Don't apologize.

1101. Straight out there. So we have to

  1102. believe,

1103. have to hear, have to believe. What

1104. about repentance? Jesus says in Luke

    Luke 13:3

1105. 13:3, "I say to you, no, but unless you

1106. repent, you'll all likewise perish." You

  1107. notice

  1108. Jesus's teaching, we're studying the

1109. Gospels now, but Jesus's teachings

1110. seldom ever use more in English, more

  1111. than three syllables.

  1112. That's understandable,

  1113. isn't it?

1114. Well, it's not rocket science to read

1115. what Jesus said about things. So, we

1116. have to repent. But what about

  1117. confession? Therefore, whoever confesses

1118. me before my before men, him will I also

1119. confess before my father that's in

  1120. heaven.

  1121. What about baptism?

1122. He who believes and is baptized will be

1123. saved, but he who does not believe will

  1124. be condemned.

  1125. about living faithful.

1126. Ye shall be hated of all men for my

1127. name's sake, but the one that endures to

1128. the end shall be saved.

1129. That's Jesus on salvation, folks.

1130. If you've been ever been one that gives

1131. the invitation, and I fully believe in

  1132. the invitation,

1133. if you do a Wednesday night invitation,

1134. when you get up to give that invitation,

1135. and even when we preach, I don't know

1136. who you are, but I fully expect somebody

1137. to be touched by the word.

1138. It's hopefully I've stayed out of the

1139. way of the beauty of it and you'll

1140. remember the lesson more than you will

  1141. me. I hope that's the case.

1142. But I hope your heart's been touched and

1143. I hope all of us will respond to the

1144. invitation somehow. Some of us may need

1145. to come forward, be baptized, remission

1146. of our sins. Some of us may need to

1147. repent of public sin. But all of us need

1148. to apply, don't we? Because this hits us

1149. where we live and examine ourselves. to

1150. see if we are in the faith and activate

1151. our hearts and our lives.

1152. Take the word and apply it. That's what

1153. it comes down to. And I hope you'll do

  1154. that all week.

1155. The speakers will be different. The

1156. message will be from the word.

1157. Take it to heart. Take it personally.

1158. And let it change you for better. We can

1159. help you respond to the invitation

1160. tonight. We use the invitation song for

  1161. that purpose. Come now.
