  1. A while back, I was making my way to the

  2. front of the building before services on

  3. a Sunday night, and there were two

  4. little boys on the front row. And I went

  5. and shook their hands. One of them said,

  6. "Mr. Bubba, are you preaching tonight?"

  7. And I said, "I am." And his smile got

  8. real big and his face lit up and my head

  9. got real big. and he turned to the boy

  10. next to him and said he gives short

  11. lessons and that's why he was excited.

  12. Well, I do everything short.

  13. But I hope that in the few minutes we

  14. have together considering

  15. a very important subject that will

  16. benefit from our time in the word of God

  17. together. When I first moved to

  18. Southside, there was on Tuesday

  19. afternoons a preachers lunch.

  20. The preachers in the area would meet and

  21. uh I saw David Goodman uh before

  22. services. He used to come with his dad,

  23. Robert, on occasion. Uh but a lot of

  24. times older, retired men would also come

  25. and eat with the preachers.

  26. And that's how I got to know some

  27. spiritual giants that are associated

  28. with this church. I'm talking about

  29. brother Corley Bowers

  30. and brother Glenn Barnhart

  31. and brother Hoover Cochran.

  32. those who being dead

  33. still speak

  34. and their influence lives on in the work

  35. that continues

  36. in the name of the Lord. And so I thank

  37. you for the way you've done that here to

  38. let people know that the gospel of Jesus

  39. Christ saves men. and thank you for

  40. inviting me to come and participate this

  41. week in this special series.

  42. I want to ask you to turn to the third

  43. chapter of the book of James. As DJ

  44. mentioned, our study tonight will come

  45. from James chapter 3.

    James 3 chapter mention

  46. And to begin,

  47. I just want to read the first two

  48. verses. James chapter 3,

    James 3 chapter mention

  49. beginning with verse one.

  50. Let not many of you become teachers, my

  51. brethren, knowing that as such we shall

  52. incur a stricter judgment.

  53. For we all stumble in many ways.

  54. But if anyone does not stumble in what

  55. he says, he is a perfect man able to

  56. bridle the whole body as well.

  57. Right now at Southside, we have a number

  58. of young families with little children.

  59. And we went through a phase where we

  60. even had to put in the weekly bulletin a

  61. column like you would have for our

  62. shutins or area meetings. We had a

  63. column that said expectant mothers.

  64. and we'd have four or five on the list

  65. and they'd all deliver and we'd put four

  66. or five more on the expectant mother's

  67. list. Our motto is if you can't convert

  68. them, conceive them. And so we've just

  69. been we've been after it.

  70. And what that produces

  71. is parents holding these little children

  72. in the foyer after services and they

  73. want them to perform for you. They'll

  74. say, "Say this or sing this." And the

  75. child will just stare at you blankly.

  76. But as soon as the service begins,

  77. those same children who refuse to

  78. perform on demand now won't be quiet.

  79. And that's the struggle, isn't it?

  80. discerning

  81. when's the time to speak

  82. and when is it time to be silent

  83. and it's a lifelong struggle.

  84. This chapter

  85. begins with an admonition

  86. directed to teachers.

  87. Let not many become teachers. Why?

  88. Because teachers are in the position

  89. where they're always speaking

  90. and they're accountable.

  91. The old King James says, "Let not many

  92. of you be masters." And the reason is

  93. few can master the tongue.

  94. And all through scripture, we see

  95. warnings about the danger

  96. of our speech.

  97. If I were to ask you tonight, what was

  98. it that the scriptures identified where

  99. Moses was kept out of the promised land?

  100. And we might say, "Oh, is because he

  101. struck the rock." But do you know what

  102. the psalmist said in Psalm 106 and verse

  103. 33? It was because Moses spoke rashly

  104. with his lips.

  105. It was more of an offense to God, not

  106. just that he struck the rock, but that

  107. he said to the people, "Shall we bring

  108. forth water from this rock?"

  109. Spoke rashly with his lips. What was it

  110. that Isaiah when he saw the Lord on his

  111. throne, lofty and exalted? What was the

  112. first thing he said before he said,

  113. "Here am I. Send me." He said, "Woe is

  114. me, for I am ruined. I am a man of

  115. unclean lips and I dwell among a people

  116. of unclean lips. Isaiah chapter 6 and

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  117. verse 5.

  118. Solomon goes so far as to say that the

  119. power of life and death is in the power

  120. of the tongue. Proverbs 18 verse 21.

    Proverbs 18:21

  121. life and death.

  122. But the definitive passage

  123. about our speech

  124. about us speaking wisely

  125. is found here in the book of James

  126. verse three.

  127. written by, of course, as you

  128. well know, the brother

  129. of Jesus,

  130. who was probably involved in that group

  131. of people

  132. who said about the Lord early in his

  133. ministry,

  134. he's out of his mind.

  135. And so rightly does James say, "We all

  136. stumble

  137. in many ways,

  138. but the one who can bridle

  139. his tongue

  140. is a perfect man."

  141. James has already emphasized, and you've

  142. already studied, about a faith that is

  143. practical because it endures trials. A

  144. faith that is practical because it

  145. manifests itself through deeds, actions,

  146. and works.

  147. Well, how can a fa a faith

  148. speak wisely?

  149. Well, I want to submit to you tonight

  150. only when it's a faith that is first

  151. heard

  152. even before it is seen.

  153. A faith that speaks wisely is heard

  154. first

  155. and then seen. Well, let's look at our

  156. text here and talk about this faith that

  157. speaks wisely. We want to be practicing

  158. our faith by the way we use our tongues.

  159. So, what does that look like every day?

  160. Well, first, a faith that speaks wisely

  161. appreciates the power of the tongue.

  162. a tongue that as one author said is both

  163. the world's smallest and largest

  164. troublemaker.

  165. Let's continue our reading in James 3

  166. and verse three. Now if we put the bits

  167. bits into the horse's mouth so that they

  168. may obey us as we direct their entire

  169. body as well. Behold, the ships also,

  170. though they are so great and are driven

  171. by strong winds, are still directed by a

  172. very small rudder, wherever the

  173. inclination of the pilot desires. So

  174. also the tongue is a small part of the

  175. body, and yet it boasts of great things.

  176. So part of wisdom is recognizing our

  177. tongues have power.

  178. They're the a small part a small member

  179. of our body but they boast great things.

  180. to bridal

  181. is a concept that James has already

  182. introduced in the letter back in James

    James 1 chapter mention

  183. chapter 1 and verse 26.

  184. In James 1 and verse 26, look back where

  185. he said, "If anyone anyone thinks

  186. himself to be religious and yet does not

  187. bridle his tongue but deceives his own

  188. heart, this man's religion is

  189. worthless."

  190. To bridal is to hold something in check.

  191. It's to bring it in control. And that's

  192. why James uses the horse's bit as an

  193. example of something small but can

  194. control a great beast.

  195. And don't just read over the fact that

  196. this bit

  197. is in the horse's mouth.

  198. You control the horse's mouth and you

  199. can make him go to the right and to the

  200. left. You can make him go forward and

  201. stop

  202. with just this small bit. And look at

  203. the control it yields.

  204. The second illustration he uses is of a

  205. rudder of a ship. Think about those

  206. massive ships in the ancient world.

  207. And they would have to cross the sea

  208. through storms and winds and waves. And

  209. how were those great vessels navigated

  210. through the waters

  211. through the small rudder that the pilot

  212. or the captain could control the ship.

  213. We speak wisely when we appreciate the

  214. power of this small member of our body.

  215. And do you not see that when you control

  216. the tongue,

  217. you control the whole body

  218. as well.

  219. He who keeps his mouth, Solomon said,

  220. keeps his soul

  221. from troubles. Proverbs 21

  222. and verse 23.

  223. And so, you can't have self-control

  224. until you control your tongue.

  225. There's no such thing as self-control

  226. without controlling your tongue. Think

  227. about how this verse in chapter 1 that

  228. we're familiar with in verse 19, another

  229. way in which James introduces the tongue

  230. before chapter 3. But look in chapter 1

  231. verse 19. This you know my beloved

  232. brethren, let everyone

  233. be quick to hear,

  234. slow to speak, and slow to anger. For

  235. the anger of man does not achieve the

  236. righteousness of God. Do you see the

  237. progression there?

  238. Slow to speak

  239. means you'll be slow

  240. to anger.

  241. Control the tongue

  242. and you'll control the whole body as

  243. well. Great power in the grasp of our

  244. tongues.

  245. I like to watch the

  246. political talk shows.

  247. I I don't get worked up by them simply

  248. because I'm I'm always in remembrance

  249. that God's in control.

  250. And no, no matter

  251. what uh fear is being stirred up or what

  252. anger people are trying to get riled up

  253. and going,

  254. God causes the rise and fall of the

  255. nations. God through his providence is

  256. going to carry out his will. And so to

  257. me, it's just another form of

  258. entertainment.

  259. But there's this one political talk show

  260. that is aptly called the last word.

  261. Do you know anybody in your life that

  262. always has to have the last word?

  263. You say, "Well, I can't think of

  264. anybody." Well, maybe it's you. Maybe

  265. you're the one.

  266. I mean, I I've got to get that last dig

  267. in

  268. and my last comment. That's got to be

  269. the last thing said about every

  270. conversation.

  271. And we've lost sight of the power of our

  272. tongues

  273. when we send

  274. inappropriate

  275. text messages

  276. and we forward emails.

  277. Are we appreciating the power

  278. of the tongue? this small part of the

  279. body that boasts

  280. of great things.

  281. Occurs to me that we often talk about

  282. the example of Jesus and following in

  283. his steps. And usually it's about things

  284. like humility

  285. or service,

  286. loving your enemies,

  287. prayer.

  288. But do you know how we will best follow

  289. Jesus

  290. is in the use of our tongues.

  291. That's the point that Peter makes in

  292. first Peter chapter 2 in verse 21

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  293. that Jesus left us an example to follow

  294. in his steps and then he lists some of

  295. those steps for us.

  296. There was not any deceit found where

  297. in his mouth.

  298. While being reviled, he uttered no

  299. threats.

  300. Even when they were saying on the cross,

  301. "Come down. Save yourself if you are the

  302. Christ." Do you know what words Jesus

  303. uttered?

  304. Father, forgive them

  305. for they know not what they do.

  306. We speak wisely

  307. when we appreciate the power

  308. that's in the grasp of our tongue.

  309. A faith that will first be heard

  310. before it is seen.

  311. Secondly, a faith that speaks wisely,

  312. not only appreciates the power of the

  313. tongue, but number two will respect

  314. the danger,

  315. the destruction

  316. that the tongue can wield.

  317. Let's continue our reading at the second

  318. half of James 3 and verse 5.

  319. Behold,

  320. how great

  321. a forest is set a flame by such a small

  322. fire.

  323. And the tongue is a fire, the very world

  324. of iniquity.

  325. The tongue is set among our members as

  326. that which defiles the entire body and

  327. sets on fire the course of hell

  328. and is set on fire set on fire by the

  329. course of our life and is set on fire by

  330. hell. For every species of beasts and

  331. birds, of reptiles and creatures of the

  332. sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the

  333. human race. But no one can tame the

  334. tongue. It is a restless evil and full

  335. of deadly poison.

  336. And so, we've got to show some respect

  337. for the danger and destruction of the

  338. tongue. Which is why now James goes from

  339. using a horse's bit and a ship's rudder

  340. to a fire.

  341. The tongue, he said, is like a fire.

  342. Have you ever been in a area that was

  343. under a burn ban?

  344. Maybe it's been real hot and dry. And so

  345. they they want to make sure that

  346. somebody doesn't come along and

  347. accidentally

  348. start a fire. So here's the kind of

  349. signs that you'll read for places under

  350. a burn ban.

  351. No campfires,

  352. no open flames, no fireworks, no

  353. smoking, no exceptions.

  354. extreme caution with anything that

  355. produces a spark.

  356. And that's what James is warning.

  357. One spark

  358. can set the whole forest a flame. Have

  359. you ever seen that happen with

  360. somebody's words?

  361. Because they didn't respect the

  362. destruction,

  363. they caused irreversible

  364. damage.

  365. The tongue is like a fire

  366. because it just takes a little to get

  367. going.

  368. something that you heard

  369. and never mind the fact that it's true

  370. or not.

  371. Is it useful to pass on? Is it something

  372. that builds up

  373. or is it something that tears down?

  374. You may not be able to control what

  375. other people are saying,

  376. what they're spreading, what they're

  377. doing.

  378. But do you know how the scriptures say

  379. that we can play our part

  380. in Psalm 15 and verse three as he's

  381. talking about the righteous coming, the

  382. one who's worthy to come into the

  383. presence of God. Listen to how he

  384. describes their character. He does not

  385. take up a reproach against a friend.

  386. Not he he doesn't spread it. He He

  387. doesn't say something.

  388. He doesn't even take it up.

  389. He said, "I'm not going to listen to

  390. that.

  391. Hey, did you hear what brother so and so

  392. did?" Well, you need to go take that up,

  393. brother so and so. Did you hear what

  394. happened to sister? Well, why don't you

  395. go and make certain you've got the facts

  396. here.

  397. He does not take up a reproach. See, you

  398. can't get burned with fire if you don't

  399. take it up into your bosom.

  400. A fire once started

  401. can be difficult to extinguish.

  402. My parents

  403. have

  404. two and a half acres of land in Houston

  405. that I used to go and mow every Friday.

  406. And my dad left behind this old riding

  407. mower

  408. that was always difficult to get

  409. started. Now, once you started it, it'd

  410. run all day long. It would do the job.

  411. But I even had to, as to give you an

  412. indication, I had to look up this

  413. YouTube video called How to Redneck

  414. Start a Riding Mower. And it worked.

  415. Well, it also had a kill switch for

  416. safety on the seat.

  417. so that if you got up, it would

  418. automatically kill the engine. And one

  419. day I was mowing. I got it started and I

  420. said, "I'm just going to finish the job.

  421. I don't care what happens." And I saw

  422. this piece of newspaper in the pasture.

  423. And so, as I'm preparing to make make

  424. the next pass, I'm just working it out

  425. in my mind. Okay, I can stop and go pick

  426. up the newspaper.

  427. the mower's gonna die. I don't know if I

  428. can start it again.

  429. And so I said, I'm just going to run

  430. over it.

  431. And so now, instead of one piece of

  432. newspaper to pick up, I've got confetti

  433. in the pasture. I mean, it just ripped

  434. to shreds all over.

  435. You see, you pass on something

  436. and then you find out it wasn't so. that

  437. wasn't true. I need to go make that

  438. right.

  439. And maybe you can with that person,

  440. but what are you going to do with the

  441. person they told and then the person

  442. they told and the person they told? You

  443. be able to pick up all those little

  444. pieces of newspaper that have been

  445. scattered.

  446. You see, we don't appreciate and respect

  447. the danger. This is fire.

  448. It spreads rapidly, and I can't put it

  449. out.

  450. A soft answer turns away wrath, but

  451. harsh words stir up anger. Proverbs 15

  452. and verse one. And once they get stirred

  453. up,

  454. you can be able to calm things down.

  455. Then

  456. you see why it's wise to start with the

  457. first part of the verse, the soft

  458. answer.

  459. Let's be wise

  460. and respect the danger.

  461. This damage by fire

  462. is most often

  463. irreversible.

  464. You can't take the goods

  465. of a home

  466. that's burned to the ground

  467. and somehow put them back together.

  468. They're destroyed.

  469. James says, "The tongue is a fire that

  470. defiles." Verse six, "Defiles

  471. the entire body." Your version might

  472. have corrupts or pollutes. Can you see

  473. why that would have been such a thought

  474. to consider by the Jewish reader?

  475. Something that's been polluted and

  476. defiled, something holy that's now been

  477. desecrated.

  478. Oh, you can apologize.

  479. You can make it right,

  480. but you can't take back those words.

  481. Little boy was having trouble with his

  482. temper.

  483. the smallest thing would would set him

  484. off. And he was becoming destructive.

  485. And so his dad said, "Son, we're we're

  486. going to fix this."

  487. And he said, "Every time you get mad

  488. about something,

  489. I want you to take a hammer and drive a

  490. nail into the back fence."

  491. And the boy did that. Boy, he went

  492. through a whole bucket of nails.

  493. And he was so proud that the next time

  494. he was tempted to get angry, he was able

  495. to control it. And he he told his dad,

  496. he said, "I'm proud of you, son." Now,

  497. he said, "Every time you win this

  498. temptation,

  499. go and remove the nails." And and he did

  500. that and filled the bucket back up. And

  501. he went and told his dad of the progress

  502. he had made.

  503. The dad said, "I'm proud of you, son,

  504. but I want you to notice in the fence

  505. there are the scars from the nails when

  506. you lost your temper

  507. and you remove the nails, but the scars

  508. are still there."

  509. Respect

  510. the danger.

  511. Every careless word Jesus said men

  512. speak, they shall render account for it

  513. on the day of judgment.

  514. Matthew 12 and verse 36.

  515. This restless evil, this fire, James

  516. says in verse 7,

  517. is like

  518. something that cannot be tamed.

  519. Something that you can never let your

  520. guard down and relax.

  521. It's going to be

  522. a lifelong

  523. struggle.

  524. We have a a cat at our house, 17 years

  525. old. We've had her since she was six

  526. months old.

  527. And so this cat is so domesticated

  528. that I don't give any thought about her

  529. scratching or biting somebody. We had a

  530. while back a family with some kids over

  531. at the house and the little girl was

  532. petting the cat as much as it would let

  533. her and she got attached to the cat and

  534. then they were getting ready to leave

  535. and by this time the cat was eating out

  536. of the bowl of her food and the little

  537. girl wanted to say goodbye to the cat.

  538. And so while the cat is eating, she

  539. leaned down and kissed the cat on her

  540. head. And

  541. I I just didn't think anything of it.

  542. We We can tame and domesticate animals

  543. and and turn our backs on them because

  544. they've been brought under subjection.

  545. But James point is you don't ever turn

  546. your back on your tongue.

  547. You don't ever think, "Oh, I would never

  548. say that."

  549. That's when words of slander

  550. and boasting,

  551. words of anger

  552. and lying.

  553. from the tongue

  554. unbridled

  555. slip.

  556. Speak wisely

  557. by respecting the danger and destruction

  558. of the tongue.

  559. What is a faith that speaks wisely?

  560. Number three, this is a faith that

  561. examines

  562. the source of the tongue,

  563. guards and protects what feeds the

  564. tongue, and that is of course the heart.

  565. The tongue speaks of the abundance

  566. of what fills

  567. the heart. And so verse nine continues,

  568. "With it, that is with our tongue, we

  569. bless our Lord and Father, and with it

  570. we curse men who have been made in the

  571. likeness of God. From the same mouth

  572. come both blessing and cursing."

  573. My brethren, these things ought not to

  574. be that way. Does a fountain send out

  575. from the same opening both fresh and

  576. bitter water? Can a fig tree, my

  577. brethren, produce olives? Or a vine,

  578. that is a grape vine, produce figs?

  579. Neither can saltwater produce fresh.

  580. Thus the old expression,

  581. he's talking out of both sides of his

  582. mouth.

  583. What's he doing? He's being double

  584. tonged.

  585. And just like James said in chapter 1

  586. that a double-minded man is unstable in

  587. all his ways, so is the man who's double

  588. tonged, who with the same mouth sings

  589. praises to God

  590. and blesses his name

  591. and then will say the most awful things

  592. to the man created in the image of God.

  593. My brethren,

  594. these things ought not to be that way.

  595. We had a get together with people at

  596. Southside

  597. and I was in charge of bringing the

  598. coffee

  599. and uh one somebody came up to me and

  600. said, "Uh, is that decaf?"

  601. And uh after my hysterical laughter

  602. stopped, I it was it was one of those 50

  603. cup earns and I said, "Yes, every other

  604. cup is decaf. Go ahead. I think it's

  605. your turn."

  606. And we understand that's that's just not

  607. possible.

  608. James said, "How can one fountain

  609. produce fresh and salty water?

  610. How you going to get figs from the grape

  611. vine,

  612. olives from the fig tree?

  613. Why is it that we use our mouth in such

  614. an inconsistent

  615. and treacherous way?

  616. It's because we didn't

  617. examine the source.

  618. We didn't protect what we put in

  619. and that which has come out is a

  620. reflection

  621. of an evil heart.

  622. In Matthew chapter 15, Jesus was asked

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  623. the question, do you remember about his

  624. disciples not washing their hands? Now,

  625. we should not think that this was a a

  626. hygiene matter. This was the ceremonial

  627. cleansing that had become a tradition of

  628. the Jewish leaders and Jesus disciples

  629. were not keeping this tradition. And so

  630. they wanted to know why is that Jesus?

  631. Why don't your disciples do that?

  632. And when Jesus explained this later to

  633. the disciples who who asked him about

  634. the answer he gave, he said to them,

  635. "Don't you understand that everything

  636. that goes into the mouth and is

  637. swallowed and thus goes into the body is

  638. eliminated?"

  639. They're they're worried about things

  640. that touch the hands and then go into

  641. the mouth and goes out of the body.

  642. But Jesus said in Matthew 15 and verse

  643. 18, the things that proceed out of the

  644. mouth come from the heart.

  645. So don't think about what's going in the

  646. mouth. Think about what's going into the

  647. heart and coming out of the mouth. evil

  648. thoughts, murders, adulteries,

  649. fornications,

  650. thefts, false witness, slanders.

  651. These things come out of the mouth

  652. because they're first put into the

  653. heart.

  654. And so, this is not simply just about

  655. controlling your speech.

  656. We've got to take it to the source

  657. and control the inputs

  658. of the heart.

  659. That's going to take away our excuse of,

  660. "Oh, it just slipped out.

  661. I didn't mean to say that."

  662. Out of the abundance of the heart,

  663. man speaks.

  664. Which means

  665. that a heart set on fire by God's word

  666. is the key

  667. to controlling our tongues.

  668. It's what you call fighting fire

  669. with fire.

  670. And so let's put in our heart

  671. words of thanksgiving

  672. and we'll be grateful. We'll express

  673. gratitude. Let's put in our hearts

  674. thoughts of praise and we'll be more

  675. encouraging

  676. instead of tearing down.

  677. Let's put in our hearts thoughts of

  678. evangelism, of spreading the gospel, and

  679. we will speak words of truth

  680. season with Saul.

  681. Examine the source

  682. because wise speech flows

  683. from a transformed

  684. heart.

  685. David referred to his mouth

  686. as the door of my lips in Psalm 141 in

  687. verse three.

  688. And more often than not,

  689. this is a door

  690. that probably should be kept closed.

  691. That's a faith

  692. that speaks

  693. wisely.

  694. In one of the conversion accounts, the

  695. account of the Philippian jailer in Acts

  696. 16,

  697. Paul and Silas had been thrown in prison

  698. just for doing what God told them to do

  699. and going where God told them to go.

  700. And in this cell where they had been

  701. fastened in the stocks,

  702. the scripture says that at midnight

  703. Paul and Silas,

  704. it doesn't just say they were singing.

  705. They were singing hymns of praise

  706. to God.

  707. They were singing, "I'm happy today

  708. and prayed." Now, I I just want you to

  709. think about

  710. what would people have heard coming

  711. out of your cell

  712. because the next phrase is just as

  713. descriptive.

  714. And the prisoners

  715. were listening to them.

  716. Because from the mouth

  717. came hymns of praise and prayer,

  718. the prisoners were listening and souls

  719. were saved.

  720. Because Paul and Silas under great

  721. selfish circumstances

  722. chose

  723. to speak wisely

  724. and to practice everyday faith

  725. even

  726. in a Philippian jail.

  727. Perhaps the best use of your mouth that

  728. you can make tonight is to confess your

  729. faith in Jesus

  730. with your own lips

  731. to say without shame, I believe that

  732. Jesus Christ is the son of God.

  733. That's wise.

  734. And because of your confession and

  735. repentance of sin, you can be baptized

  736. and have those sins washed away.

  737. And then you can begin a life of wisdom

  738. and works

  739. of putting your faith into action and

  740. bringing others to the feet of the

  741. master teacher. A song of invitation has

  742. been selected where you can make that

  743. known. If you need the prayers and

  744. encouragement of your brethren, your

  745. fellow brothers and sisters who love

  746. you, that's why we're here. And you can

  747. make that known. Just come to the front

  748. right now while we stand up and while we

  749. sing.
