  1. A very good evening to all of you. So

  2. good to have or to be here with you. I'm

  3. so used to saying so good to have you

  4. here with me, but it's nice to be here

  5. with you all tonight and very much

  6. appreciate the invitation uh to to come

  7. this way and of course appreciate DJ and

  8. his beautiful family. We it has been a

  9. joy getting to know them over the years

  10. and u thank you so much for the fine

  11. prayer. good songs, too. Especially the

  12. way you led that last song, brother. I

  13. appreciate that. It's nice and pensive

  14. for us to think about what the words are

  15. saying. There was a handout at the door.

  16. If you happen to grab one, if you

  17. didn't, that's all right. Grab it on the

  18. way out. Uh my my goal is to try to

  19. provide all the answers to it. Uh but uh

  20. some of them you may have to think about

  21. a little bit. But before we begin, I was

  22. hoping I could share a little story with

  23. you from history to kind of get us

  24. perhaps in a little bit of a mindset of

  25. what we're talking about this evening.

  26. I I enjoy American history and I found

  27. myself interested many years ago and at

  28. the dollar store of all places, I found

  29. a DVD set and it was called Why We

  30. Fight. And it was actually uh it's a

  31. it's an America prop American propaganda

  32. film that was put out. It was they would

  33. show it at the at the movie theaters. Uh

  34. whenever they would have a big showing

  35. and they would have these play

  36. beforehand and it was a way to teach

  37. show the American people why did we even

  38. need to fight in World War II. And that

  39. kind of got me really interested in

  40. World War II. And ever since I've been

  41. interested in looking at different

  42. stories of it and I'm not going to I'm

  43. not going to delude you. I'm not an

  44. expert by any means or a history buff on

  45. that. I just enjoy it. And there's one

  46. story I came across recently that I had

  47. I did not know a lot about and I would

  48. like to share that with you. And so for

  49. if you would, this is an October 25th,

  50. 1944.

  51. And for a moment, if you can just

  52. imagine, it's just at sunrise and you're

  53. on the Pacific Ocean and you're in a on

  54. a ship, a small group of ships, actually

  55. of American ships. And just as the sun

  56. rises up, what do you see coming? You

  57. see another fleet of ships, massive

  58. fleet of ships coming toward you.

  59. this unit that you're part of, it's

  60. called codeen named Taffy 3. Now, Taffy

  61. 3 was not a frontline command fleet, a

  62. combat fleet. Uh, it was rather a a

  63. support fleet. That's what it was

  64. designed to do. It was comprised of a

  65. slowm moving unarmored ships.

  66. Some of them were known as jeep

  67. carriers. Those are those are basically

  68. budget friendly aircraft carriers,

  69. cheaply made. And there were a few small

  70. destroyers as well. Again, they were not

  71. meant for fighting. They were meant to

  72. support the fighting fleet. Well, what

  73. has happened is that because of a mass

  74. commun communication error,

  75. Taffy 3 was separated from the rest of

  76. the of the American Navy. And so they're

  77. left out on their own, completely

  78. unprotected.

  79. Sunrise is coming. What they see stream

  80. steaming toward them is the crown jewel

  81. of the Imperial Japanese Navy known as

  82. the center force.

  83. This was the most massive

  84. naval unit that was on the water at that

  85. time. It's a first division attack force

  86. and leading the charge was a ship by the

  87. name of Yamato.

  88. And it was and actually still is the

  89. largest battleship ever constructed. It

  90. had a sister ship as well, but the Yato

  91. is the most famous. It was the heaviest.

  92. It was the largest, most brutally armed

  93. in all of all of history and still is

  94. today. The Yumato's guns could fire at

  95. 26 miles. 26 miles away, it could hit a

  96. target. And in fact, its guns were so

  97. massive that the guns on this ship alone

  98. outweighed the ships that are all in the

  99. in Taffy 3. It was a massive massive

  100. ship.

  101. And this is what's coming toward Taffy 3

  102. that morning.

  103. The Americans find themselves

  104. absolutely, undeniably outgunned.

  105. They are also outpaced as well. The

  106. ships that go along with the Yato are

  107. some of the fastest in the world. And in

  108. fact, when you look at what they're

  109. facing mathematically, it's a guaranteed

  110. massacre for the Americans. It's no

  111. putting it any other way.

  112. And there's no there's no way for them

  113. to retreat and escape. They've already

  114. been seen. And if they were to try to

  115. run, then the Japanese fleet could

  116. easily pursue them and pick them off one

  117. by one.

  118. And so in this moment of absolute terror

  119. and chaos, there's an a rear admiral by

  120. the name of Clifton Sprag. I suggest you

  121. look him up. He issued an order that day

  122. which defied all human logic.

  123. He did not order a retreat. Rather, what

  124. he ordered his tiny unarmed destroyers

  125. to do was to lay down a smoke screen in

  126. front of all of their vessels, turn

  127. around then and have the entire fleet

  128. then charge directly toward the Japanese

  129. Navy under cover of this smoke screen.

  130. Now, what is if you were just a regular

  131. sailor on one of those ships, what do

  132. you think? What would what would you

  133. think if you were to going down toward

  134. this Yumata which you've only heard

  135. tales about

  136. mutiny or human pride would say save

  137. yourself? I don't think so. But that's

  138. not what these sailors did. Not one of

  139. them.

  140. It was their naval discipline that

  141. rather told them submit to the

  142. commander. That's what they did. Every

  143. single one of those sailors that day

  144. submitted to their commander. And the

  145. captain of a tiny destroyer, the USS

  146. Johnston, did not hesitate. He swung his

  147. ship around immediately and charged with

  148. the giant battle steps at full steam.

  149. And the captain of the Samuel R. Roberts

  150. was nicknamed the toy box. Well,

  151. again,

  152. zero armor plating told his crew over

  153. the loudspeaker as they headed in. They

  154. said, he said, "Gentlemen, we are

  155. entering a battle from which we will

  156. likely not return." The sailors knew

  157. what they were getting into and they

  158. executed the order perfectly,

  159. unhesitatingly.

  160. Because those sailors humbly submitted

  161. to the command that made no sense to

  162. their human eyes,

  163. something spectacular then happened.

  164. They fought with such ferocious and

  165. orderly discipline. The Japanese admiral

  166. panicked.

  167. And you know what he did?

  168. He rather ordered a retreat because he

  169. had assumed that no one would fight that

  170. fiercely unless he was backed by a

  171. massive armada. He had assumed that what

  172. he had stumbled into was the entire US

  173. Navy. and he now was quaking in his

  174. boots. And as he's trying to scramble

  175. together his fleet and his ships to make

  176. the retreat, the US planes, which were

  177. at this point were out of ammo, were

  178. continuing to make strafing dives at

  179. these ships, giving them the impression

  180. that they were coming after them more

  181. and more and more.

  182. Again, confused and bewildered, the

  183. giant a Japanese fleet then turned

  184. around and fled.

  185. And this battle which took place that

  186. day is credited with one of the turning

  187. points in the war of the Pacific and how

  188. it is the Pacific was eventually won by

  189. the Allied forces. A hopeless battle

  190. that was won because a few small ships

  191. chose absolute submission over

  192. self-preservation that day. And this is

  193. an actual watercolor painting that was

  194. done by Commander Dwight D. sheeper

  195. depicting that very day.

  196. 2,000 years ago,

  197. the Apostle James wrote a letter and he

  198. wrote a letter to a group of believers

  199. who are trapped in a different kind of

  200. warfare.

  201. He opens James chapter 4 by stepping

    James 4 chapter mention

  202. into the bridge of our lives and

  203. pointing out the conflict that's raging

  204. around all of us.

  205. The conflict that's common to all men

  206. everywhere. He asks in verse one, "What

  207. causes these fights and quarrels among

  208. you? Don't they come from your desires

  209. at battle within you?"

  210. What James is doing with his audience

  211. here is he is looking at the wreckage of

  212. their relationships, the anxiety that's

  213. in their hearts and the chaos of the

  214. culture. And he says, "You are in a war

  215. and you are losing

  216. because you are trying to fight it

  217. selfishly, refusing to submit

  218. to Almighty God."

  219. And so for us

  220. when we ourselves look at the giant

  221. battleships that are on the horizon of

  222. the seas of our life, financial woes,

  223. broken relationships,

  224. addictions and fear.

  225. We may try to fight them by t by taking

  226. hold of the steering wheel with our own

  227. hands and just trying to do an about

  228. face.

  229. But by trying to do this on our own and

  230. on our own terms, our pride is what

  231. actually sinks us deeper and faster.

  232. Today, God's word offers us a completely

  233. counterintuitive strategy to victory.

  234. That's what James is offering here. It's

  235. a tactical maneuver that makes no sense

  236. in the light of this battle, in the

  237. light of what the world would have us

  238. believe, but it changes absolutely

  239. everything.

  240. It's in James chapter 4 and verse 7 that

    James 4 chapter mention

  241. the captain of our salvation issues his

  242. command. Submit yourselves then to God.

  243. Resist the devil and he will flee from

  244. you.

  245. So tonight, my dear brothers and sisters

  246. in Christ, we're going to look at why

  247. surrender

  248. is our only strategy for victory

  249. and how true humility in the way is the

  250. only way to win the battles raging

  251. within our soul. Not surrender to the

  252. enemy, but surrender to the instructions

  253. of our commander.

  254. So, I invite you to bi open your Bibles

  255. up to James chapter 4 if you're not

    James 4 chapter mention

  256. already there. And let's begin reading

  257. in the text tonight. We're going to

  258. start in chapter 4, beginning in verse

  259. verses 1-5.

  260. From whence come wars and fightings

  261. among you, come they not hence even of

  262. your lusts that war in your members. Ye

  263. lust and have not. Ye kill and desire to

  264. have and cannot obtain. You fight and

  265. war. You You have not because you ask

  266. not. You ask and receive not because you

  267. ask a miss. That you may consume it upon

  268. your lust. You adulterers and

  269. adulteresses, know ye not that the

  270. friendship of the world is enmity with

  271. God. Whosoever therefore will be a

  272. friend of the world is the enemy of God.

  273. Do you think the scripture saith in

  274. vain, the spirit that dwelleth in us

  275. lustth to envy?

  276. James tells us right here what the

  277. source of the strife really is. It comes

  278. down to a proud heart. That's where

  279. James starts with. So much of the

  280. conflict that goes along in our life and

  281. in our relationships comes back to the

  282. pride that's within our heart. And he

  283. says here first of all and talking about

  284. the source here of this pride and again

  285. the problems is in verse one where he

  286. says where do these wars and fightings

  287. come from among you come they not hence

  288. even of what

  289. your lusts

  290. your desires

  291. now that that word that's in the Greek

  292. text is kind of an interesting word

  293. there it's the word hedon

  294. you Ever heard you know the term

  295. hedenism?

  296. This is where we get that word from.

  297. Hedenism which hedonism is the

  298. philosophy of giving yourself up

  299. completely to your passions. Whatever

  300. you want to do you do it and you do it

  301. now.

  302. And these pleasures James says because

  303. of the lack of self-discipline that you

  304. have and the fact that you are enslaved

  305. by your passions.

  306. This is what's waging war within you and

  307. this is what's part of the source of the

  308. strive.

  309. Remember what Paul said to the Galatians

  310. in Galatians chapter 5? Remember in that

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  311. chapter what he's talking about? He's

  312. talking about what? He's talking about

  313. the fruit of the spirit. But what else

  314. is there? The fruit of the spirit.

  315. There's something in war with it, in

  316. conflict with it. You remember what it

  317. is? The works of the flesh.

  318. In fact, in verse 17, this is the way

  319. Paul put it. He said, "For the desires

  320. of the flesh are against the spirit.

  321. They are at war with each other."

  322. Solomon even talks about this in the Old

  323. Testament, doesn't he? Many times in the

  324. book of Proverbs, he talks about the

  325. issue of pride and he talks about the

  326. issue of a man not being in control of

  327. his own desires. In fact, he says, "A

  328. man who is able not to control himself

  329. is like an unwalled city,

  330. easily taken, easily overcome."

  331. Proverbs 13:10, he says, "Bri pride

    Proverbs 13:10

  332. comes nothing but strife." It's two

  333. opposing forces here. Our selfish

  334. desires and God's will. They cannot go

  335. in the same direction. They do not. And

  336. they cannot cohabitate.

  337. So what James is showing his audience

  338. here, his readers, and what the Holy

  339. Spirit shows us now because he's

  340. preserved it for us is to

  341. when we look at the root of our

  342. relational and spiritual conflicts,

  343. the problems in our life, you know, our

  344. knee-jerk reaction may be to blame them.

  345. It's them or it's the situation.

  346. Well, James says a different approach

  347. here.

  348. Maybe it's not so much them or this or

  349. that, but maybe it's rather our own

  350. unyielding desires.

  351. So before blaming others, ask

  352. what desires

  353. in my own heart are fueling this

  354. conflict right now.

  355. Spoiler alert, it's all going to come

  356. back to pride. It always comes back to

  357. pride, my dear friend. Pride is the

  358. original sin and pride is the last sin

  359. that falls for any of us.

  360. Let's continue on.

  361. You notice that in verse continuing in

  362. verse four, James here, he makes this

  363. point concerning all of this. He says,

  364. "You adulterers and adulterers, know you

  365. not that the friendship of the world is

  366. enmity with God?

  367. Whosoever therefore will be a friend of

  368. the world is the enemy of God." What

  369. does he call them? these people,

  370. adulterers and adulteresses. That's

  371. strong language that he's using here.

  372. What James is doing is he's using

  373. covenant language here to describe

  374. really what's at stake and really the

  375. betrayal that they are that they are

  376. creating in this relationship that they

  377. have not just with each other but it's

  378. really with God. You see, a friendship

  379. with the world, James says, is it's not

  380. just a casuala acquaintance that

  381. happens, but it's something that leads

  382. to a a deep alignment with worldly

  383. values. It's what happens inevitably.

  384. And so he's calling these believers out

  385. for who they are because he's trying to

  386. wake them up and he's trying to get them

  387. to see the true state uh that their

  388. spirituality is in and to show them that

  389. by loving this world and fighting over

  390. these things and striving for these

  391. things, they are actually betraying the

  392. very God that they claim to be serving.

  393. You see, they have caused themselves now

  394. to fight against God himself.

  395. You know, John, [clears throat]

  396. we're going to stay at James, but John

  397. in his first letter says these words

  398. that go so perfectly with this. 1 John

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  399. chapter 2, beginning in verse 15, you

  400. know these words. Listen. Love not the

  401. world, neither the things that are in

  402. the world. If any man love the world,

  403. the love of the father is not in him.

  404. John doesn't mince words here. The love

  405. of the father is not in him. For all

  406. that is in the world, and the lust of

  407. the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and

  408. the pride of life,

  409. is not of the Father, but is of the

  410. world.

  411. And if that isn't enough, John tells us

  412. what the fate of the world is.

  413. the world passeth away, and the lust

  414. thereof,

  415. the lust of the flesh, the lust of the

  416. eyes, the pride of life,

  417. it will all pass away.

  418. But he that doeth the will of God

  419. abideth forever.

  420. You know, the greatest sermon ever

  421. preached,

  422. Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7. What is

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  423. that? It's a sermon on the mount.

  424. Jesus here lays it down for us exactly

  425. what God expects of us.

  426. And he tells us something very profound

  427. aligned with what we're talking about

  428. tonight in chapter 6 and verse 24. You

  429. remember this. He says, "No man can

  430. serve two masters.

  431. You will either love one or you'll hate

  432. the other. There's no way that you can

  433. serve two." And Jesus says, "Lest there

  434. be many misunderstanding." You cannot

  435. serve God and mammon. You cannot serve

  436. God and worldly goods and worldly

  437. pleasure because they are opposed to

  438. each other. So this is what I have to

  439. ask myself then is what James is telling

  440. me is where have I aligned my heart

  441. more with culture

  442. than with Christ more with the world

  443. than with Christ.

  444. And we're all affected by it. Do not be

  445. so prideful to think that we are immune

  446. from being affected by the culture that

  447. is around us. We are

  448. I mean just you just consider for just a

  449. moment. I mean how all of us have been

  450. affected by something like te technology

  451. and I'm not we're not even talking about

  452. sin here. We're just talking about

  453. technology and our attention spans and

  454. things like that, right? I mean you

  455. remember like how it is sitting and

  456. listening to a a sermon that would go on

  457. until midnight. You think how many of I

  458. think we'd all would have fallen out the

  459. window that night. Our attention span

  460. just isn't the same as it used to be.

  461. And why is that? Well, the culture has

  462. changed. I mean, and our brains. I mean,

  463. it's the way that we our expectations.

  464. I'm not saying it's sinful, but it's

  465. just the reality. So, I'm just if that's

  466. going to affect us, something like that,

  467. then what about the rest of the culture?

  468. So look honestly and deeply and say,

  469. "Is there any place in my life or in my

  470. heart where I'm more aligned with the

  471. world than with God?"

  472. And this matters because God's

  473. jealous for us. He has a jealous love.

  474. That's what James is pointing toward

  475. here. That's why he uses the term

  476. adulterers and adulteresses.

  477. You know, God's jealousy

  478. for us is something that the world does

  479. not understand.

  480. Jealousy, if in a worldly sense, I mean,

  481. the word jealousy is is an ugly word.

  482. It's a word that people don't like. I

  483. mean, it's and it's because many people

  484. are they have petty jealousy. And the

  485. jealousy that they have is often not

  486. rooted in true love for another person,

  487. but it's in their own insecurity.

  488. And if you have that sort of

  489. understanding of what jealousy is and of

  490. course you're not going to understand

  491. what the scriptures talk about the

  492. jealousy of an almighty all loving God,

  493. you're not going to understand it

  494. because the love that God has for us is

  495. not because he's insecure. It's not

  496. because he's petty. He is jealous for us

  497. because

  498. his holy desire is for our undivided

  499. devotion

  500. and he wants to protect us. So to keep

  501. us from harm and to keep us from the

  502. wicked one that would steal us away.

  503. What's the first commandment? And

  504. whenever in in the book of Exodus

  505. whenever Moses came down from the

  506. mountain with the ten commandments,

  507. what's the first commandment? Thou shalt

  508. not what? Have any other gods before me.

  509. Thou shalt not worship any other god

  510. before me.

  511. Because our God, there is no room for

  512. another god in our life. Zechariah even

  513. talks about this. God says, "I am a

  514. jealous God for Zion. I am jealous for

  515. Zion with great jealousy."

  516. So why is this important for us to

  517. recognize? Because if I am truly going

  518. to submit my heart to God, which is what

  519. we're getting to tonight, which we're

  520. talking about, I have to recognize God's

  521. rightful claim

  522. over my heart. I have to recognize his

  523. rightful claim over every part of my

  524. life. It's just like when we have to

  525. come to the understanding of what God is

  526. my creator. God is my savior.

  527. God has a right to tell me what to do

  528. because he is the author and the

  529. finisher. He is the great architect

  530. and God should expect my fidelity

  531. because

  532. I'm bought with a price and I belong to

  533. him.

  534. It's not wrong

  535. for a husband or for a wife

  536. to desire that their spouse

  537. be faithful to them. That's not

  538. unreasonable, is it? Certainly not.

  539. That's what God is asking for here. He's

  540. asking for us to be faithful to him. And

  541. if I'm going to do that, I have to

  542. recognize he has the right

  543. to desire that.

  544. So, let's go back to the text in James

  545. and we come to our next little section

  546. here. We're going to read here verses

  547. 6-10.

  548. But he that is God

  549. giveth more grace.

  550. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the

  551. proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

  552. Submit yourselves, therefore, to God.

  553. Resist the devil, and he will flee from

  554. you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw

  555. nigh to you.

  556. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and

  557. purify your hearts, ye double- minded.

  558. Be afflicted, and mourn and weep. Let

  559. your laughter be turned to mourning and

  560. your joy to heaviness.

  561. Humble yourselves in the sight of the

  562. Lord and he shall lift you up.

  563. See that

  564. James is calling his readers to them is

  565. humble submission.

  566. You already knew the spoiler alert with

  567. this, right? I mean, but but that that's

  568. what it is. I mean, again, going back to

  569. the problems they're having. Again,

  570. James says the solution here is humble

  571. submission. That's what it has to be.

  572. And you notice the first point that he

  573. makes about this is that God has ample

  574. grace for the humble,

  575. unmmerited favor for the humble. But

  576. with the proud,

  577. how does he feel toward them? How does

  578. he act toward them? What does he say?

  579. God resisteth the proud. Now that's an

  580. interesting term too.

  581. It's actually it's a military term

  582. that's used. James is you James is

  583. drawing from this this military this

  584. battle sort of imagery here. And this

  585. term here of opposition is setting

  586. oneself against and God is actively

  587. resisting the ways of the proud

  588. individual. But when it comes to those

  589. that are humble in heart, he lines up

  590. for them in support. So he's going to

  591. stand between the proud and the humble,

  592. resisting the proud, protecting the

  593. humble. That's what's going on here.

  594. Peter whenever and he's writing in his

  595. first letter and in chapter 5, beginning

  596. in verse 9, he says God opposes the

  597. proud and says also but gives grace to

  598. the humble. Going back into Isaiah 57

  599. verse1 15. God dwells with him who is of

  600. a contrite

  601. and lowly spirit.

  602. You see pride puts us against our holy

  603. God.

  604. You go back to the beginning. I told you

  605. it's kind of the original sin in a way.

  606. You go back to the very beginning

  607. whenever

  608. Satan first deceived Eve.

  609. And he starts off with a question to

  610. her.

  611. Is it true

  612. you can't eat of everything or you can

  613. eat everything of the the of the fruit

  614. of the garden?

  615. Oh, we can eat everything just not of

  616. this one tree, right? The tree of the

  617. knowledge of good and evil.

  618. You remember what the Satan then is

  619. doing to her in this causing her to

  620. question God and God's motives. Now kind

  621. of goes back to that whole idea of

  622. jealousy there because what Satan plants

  623. into her heart is the notion that

  624. somehow God is petty about all of this.

  625. And he's then goes on to she goes on to

  626. you know the rest of the story goes on

  627. to explain how it is that well as Eve

  628. looks at the fruit right the devil says

  629. what's going to happen if you eat this

  630. fruit well we'll die he says no you

  631. won't you're not going to die I'm going

  632. tell you the truth you see God doesn't

  633. want you to eat this fruit it's not

  634. nothing to do with you dying it's

  635. because he knows that as soon as you eat

  636. this fruit

  637. be like him. Your eyes are going to be

  638. opened. You're going to see and you're

  639. going to understand. Eve, you're going

  640. to finally see and understand what I'm

  641. talking about.

  642. What did he ultimately What note did he

  643. strike in her heart? What was it? Pride.

  644. I get to be like, God,

  645. God's keeping something from me.

  646. And that's She looks, sees it. It's

  647. beautiful. Good to eat. and she takes

  648. deception. That's what pride does to us

  649. and it puts us in opposition with God.

  650. Humility is the thing that puts us in a

  651. position to receive his grace. That's

  652. what James is saying.

  653. So the steps of submission

  654. seven through nine is where he lists it

  655. here. He gives us six imperatives.

  656. That's what James does. Six imperatives

  657. for submitting for a submitted life.

  658. I bumped something. DJ.

  659. Oh, it's not seen it there, but I can

  660. see it here. Okay.

  661. >> No, it's back.

  662. All right. So, he gives six imperatives.

  663. The first one, submit to God. That's

  664. what he says. Voluntary alignment under

  665. God's authority. What did Paul say in

  666. Romans 12:1? Present your bodies as

    Romans 12:1

  667. what? A living sacrifice.

  668. Because this is what's reasonable

  669. service for you to do. Number two, what

  670. did he say? Resist the devil. Stand firm

  671. in God's strength. Peter in his first

  672. letter, chapter 5, said, "Resist him

  673. firm in your faith." Firm in your faith.

  674. Stand firm in your faith with God.

  675. Number three, draw near to God. That's

  676. what James says.

  677. Intimacy through prayer, through

  678. worship, through obedience. The Hebrew

  679. writer said, "Let us draw near with a

  680. true heart in what? Full assurance of

  681. faith.

  682. James goes on number four, what does he

  683. say? Cleanse your hands.

  684. Deal with your outward actions.

  685. I love that James starts with this. You

  686. know that we he's going to talk about

  687. the heart here in just a moment. That's

  688. what he's really getting to ultimately.

  689. But we have to start with just cleaning

  690. up our life. Go wash your hands. That's

  691. what you have to do. Imagine if you have

  692. you're going in for heart surgery and

  693. the surgeon what is the what's the first

  694. thing they do? They have to go wash

  695. their hands before they come into

  696. surgery. Imagine a surgeon going in. He

  697. hasn't washed it saying he's going to

  698. perform heart surgery.

  699. You can't begin to start to work on your

  700. own heart if you refuse to just stop and

  701. wash your hands. Cleanse up your life.

  702. That's what James is saying. Wash

  703. yourselves and make yourselves clean.

  704. Isaiah said, "Remove the evil of of your

  705. deeds from before my eyes and cease to

  706. do evil. Submit to God. Turn away from

  707. sinful behavior." That's what James

  708. says. So then purify your hearts. Number

  709. five, address the inward motives as

  710. well. Psalmist said in Psalm 24:es 34,

  711. "Who shall ascend into the holy hill? He

  712. who has clean hands and a pure heart."

  713. Address the inner motives,

  714. not just the outer. So the outer, yes,

  715. stop it. Don't do it. But don't just

  716. stop there. Actually, now go and change

  717. the heart. Because if you don't change

  718. the heart, you're going to go right back

  719. doing the same old things that you've

  720. always done. In fact, this is part of

  721. what Jesus talks about again, greatest

  722. sermon ever preached, sermon on the

  723. mount, Matthew 5 through7. You remember

  724. he talks about a few things there

  725. concerning sin in the law.

  726. Thou shalt not kill.

  727. Anybody you ever killed?

  728. I bet most most of us probably not right

  729. and you know what same with Jesus

  730. audience that day. Thou shalt not kill.

  731. Well, I'm good. I haven't killed anyone

  732. Jesus. At least not today. Not this

  733. week. And then what does Jesus say?

  734. You hated your brother.

  735. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

  736. Never done that.

  737. Whoever looks at another with lust,

  738. thou shalt not steal,

  739. hands are clean there, Jesus. If you

  740. covet,

  741. you see what Jesus is teaching them.

  742. Suddenly now you look at the law and the

  743. person who thought they were clean.

  744. Jesus says, "It's not just about this.

  745. It's about this." God desires

  746. everything, even our whole heart.

  747. So then what's the reaction? James says

  748. to mourn over our sin. Be afflicted,

  749. mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be

  750. turned to mourning, your joy to

  751. heaviness.

  752. Genuine repentance, not just casual

  753. regret or I got caught, but actually

  754. wanting to change. Why? Because you want

  755. to be faithful to God just as you want

  756. to be faithful to your beloved.

  757. Paul when he's writing the Corinthians

  758. said this in 2 Corinthians 7 and verse

  759. 10. Godly grief or godly sorrow produces

  760. what? Repentance that leads to salvation

  761. without regret. Salvation in life.

  762. Worldly grief doesn't. Worldly grief

  763. just consumes you and overwhelms you and

  764. destroys you. Godly grief, godly sorrow

  765. does lead to change. You see what James

  766. is doing is he calls for us to be

  767. serious about sin

  768. and not treat it casually.

  769. You see what he's pointing to and what

  770. he shows us here. It's like again if we

  771. go back to this kind of battle imagery

  772. here, you think about a soldier here

  773. who's getting ready for battle, the

  774. cleaning of his weapon before battle. He

  775. doesn't just clean the outside, but what

  776. do you have to do, gentlemen? Even those

  777. of you that hunt, what do you do before

  778. you go out? You don't just wipe the

  779. outside. Oh boy, she looks good. You

  780. take it apart and you clean it all.

  781. Right? Remember one time I went went to

  782. go bird hunting and it kept jamming up

  783. because I hadn't cleaned it well enough

  784. inside. I thought I had I had oiled it,

  785. but it wasn't enough. I had to take it

  786. apart. Once I did that properly, it

  787. worked just fine.

  788. See, James is telling us just as a

  789. soldier has to clean his weapon before

  790. battle outside and inside, repentance is

  791. part of what prepares us for v spiritual

  792. victory. And what he then talks about is

  793. a promise of exaltation that God has for

  794. us there. Verse 10. Humble yourselves in

  795. the sight of the Lord and he shall lift

  796. you up. Vindication, restoration,

  797. spiritual elevation. That's what he's

  798. talking about here. Matthew 23 and verse

  799. 12. Whoso whoever exalts himself will be

  800. humbled, but whoever humbles himself

  801. will be exalted.

  802. Even then back in Samuel, the Lord makes

  803. poor and makes rich. He brings low and

  804. he exalts.

  805. You know, God's path to greatness. You

  806. know where it always has to run through

  807. the valley of humility. You got to go

  808. down if you want to go up with God.

  809. Submit yourself to God and to be raised

  810. up. You ever thought about that? When we

  811. submit ourselves to baptism, we go down

  812. in the water and we come up. It likens

  813. here the the death, burial, and

  814. resurrection of our Lord and Savior

  815. Jesus Christ. It also shows the humility

  816. that we have humbling ourselves before

  817. God so that he can raise us up to be a

  818. new creature and a new creation.

  819. So, let's go to the next part here of

  820. the text.

  821. We're going to look at a conduct, the

  822. conduct of a submitted life because

  823. that's what James goes into. Now, we're

  824. going to be reading verses 11 through 12

  825. if you please. So he says

  826. because what humility leads to he says

  827. he speak not evil one of another

  828. brethren. He that speaketh evil of his

  829. brother and judgeth his brother speaketh

  830. evil of the law and judgeth the law.

  831. But if thou judge the law.

  832. Thou art not a doer of the law but a

  833. judge.

  834. There is one lawgiver who is able to

  835. save and to destroy. Who art thou that

  836. judges another? You see what he's

  837. getting at here? Again, this is going

  838. back to pride. The conduct of a

  839. submitted life is not going we are not

  840. going to put ourselves in the position

  841. of God. One of the ways that this is

  842. going to manifest itself then if I have

  843. a humble submissive heart is I'm going

  844. to be guarding my speech. You want to

  845. start to help getting control of your

  846. life and your actions and such start

  847. with controlling what you say and how

  848. you say it. That's part of what James

  849. deals deals with here. In fact, you

  850. remember, have you did y'all study

  851. chapter three?

  852. In chapter three, right? What is what is

  853. so much of what he's talking about

  854. there?

  855. What we say? How hard it is to control?

  856. You remember, you know, spoiler alert,

  857. what to the end of chapter three, what

  858. do what you put in the heart, right? Is

  859. it wisdom, which is of the world, which

  860. brings about strife and division, or is

  861. it the world, the wisdom which is from

  862. above, which is first, pure, peaceable,

  863. easy to be entreated? You see what James

  864. is getting at here?

  865. It's good to say it once, you say it

  866. again. James says a lot of these things

  867. multiple times here.

  868. Speak no evil, no slander, no intent to

  869. do harm. Ephesians 4:29, let not corrupt

    Ephesians 4:29

  870. communication talk out of your mouth, no

  871. filthy communication, but only that

  872. which is good for edification.

  873. And if we don't take the tongue

  874. seriously, Proverbs tells us, Solomon

  875. tells us in Proverbs 18 and verse 12, it

  876. says, "Death and life are in the power

  877. of the tongue."

  878. You ever, you know, God

  879. now, we can't be God. You understand

  880. that? Full stop. We can't be God. But

  881. God has made us in his image. And in

  882. making us in his image, he has given us

  883. part of himself.

  884. You know, of course, our soul, eternity,

  885. things like that. Understanding of right

  886. and wrong. I mean, when he created us,

  887. when he created us, Adam and Eve in the

  888. garden, what did he he gave man to have

  889. what? Dominion, right? Man to have

  890. dominion over the world. I mean, that's

  891. a divine attribute that he's given us.

  892. He's allowed us to have some authority

  893. and rule and power over the world,

  894. to bring it into subjection. That's the

  895. command he's given us to do.

  896. He's also given us something very

  897. powerful that each and every one of us

  898. has, and that's our tongue.

  899. How did God create the world? He spoke

  900. it into existence. Life and death are on

  901. the tongue and he's given that power to

  902. you.

  903. So guard your speech. There is power in

  904. it. And it matters. That's why words

  905. matter. That's why the enemy is always

  906. about trying to twist the words, right?

  907. And redefine the words. If we can define

  908. the words and the terms and you can

  909. control people's hearts and minds and

  910. ideas.

  911. We seen any of that in the last

  912. well of

  913. our whole lives.

  914. Submission to God includes submitting

  915. our tongues to his control. What I say

  916. and how I say it.

  917. And in doing so, I'm going to recognize

  918. God as the supreme judge.

  919. Only God has the authority ultimately to

  920. save and destroy eternally. That's

  921. that's where it comes down to. I may

  922. have a lot of power in my tongue, but I

  923. can't I cannot save anyone. I can't even

  924. save myself in the end. That's part of

  925. what God teaches me. So, who is the only

  926. one that can save and destroy? It is God

  927. and it is God alone. And with what James

  928. is talking about here with getting

  929. ourselves in this position of being a

  930. judge, he says we are getting putting

  931. ourselves in the position of God, which

  932. I am not. Again, go back to the original

  933. garden sin, right?

  934. I am usurping God's role.

  935. You see what James is driving at here?

  936. All the problems that they have and

  937. such. He say, you're trying to be God.

  938. You're not in control of your passions

  939. and yourself.

  940. You're not submitting to him.

  941. Judge not that you be not judged.

  942. Matthew chapter 7. Right? It's not our

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  943. role. And he also warns about hypocrisy

  944. in that.

  945. But a submitted faith trusts God's

  946. justice and focuses on obedience rather

  947. than

  948. vengeance and condemnation of others by

  949. whom we've been wronged or with whom we

  950. disagree.

  951. So much so much of the emotional and

  952. inner turmoil that we have just on this

  953. notion here, right?

  954. is because we're trying to put oursel in

  955. a role that we were never designed for.

  956. God doesn't call us to fix everything.

  957. He doesn't call us to fix the world. God

  958. did not call us to slay the dragon. What

  959. did Jesus tell us to do? Offer up a cup

  960. of cold water in his name. That's what

  961. you can do.

  962. A side point on this, just understand

  963. and know that if you are finding

  964. yourself just so

  965. anxious about the world and everything,

  966. we you would do well to turn that

  967. television off, put the phone down,

  968. touch grass, and be with your families

  969. and your children and just express

  970. your faithfulness to God and the few

  971. things he's laid before you. Now, I'm

  972. getting off on a different tangent

  973. there, so let's get back into James

  974. specifically.

  975. We go to the next part here. This is

  976. 13-17.

  977. We talked about now the conduct of a

  978. submitted life. We're going to look at

  979. the confidence now of a submitted life

  980. here as we start to come to a close. So

  981. we're going to read this section. He

  982. says, "Go to now ye that say today or

  983. tomorrow we will go into such a city and

  984. continue there a year and buy and sell

  985. and get gain.

  986. For as you know not what shall be on the

  987. tomorrow?

  988. For what is your life is even a vapor

  989. that appearth for a little time and then

  990. vanishth away. But that you ought to

  991. say, if the Lord will,

  992. we shall live and do this or that.

  993. But now ye rejoice in your boastings.

  994. All such rejoicing is evil. Therefore,

  995. to him that knoweth to do good and doeth

  996. it not,

  997. to him it is sin.

  998. James here closes the chapter.

  999. Come again. It's like a phantom. It just

1000. go away and come back. He closes the

1001. chapter by addressing another form of

1002. pride here. self-reliance and planning.

1003. And a faith that submits not only

  1004. humbles

  1005. itself before God

  1006. in the present,

1007. but also trusts him with the future. You

1008. see what James is getting at? So, you're

1009. you're having problems right now, he

1010. says, and you got to get that in check.

1011. But part of it, too, it's not just right

1012. now, but it's also in the future.

1013. You submit to God now in the present,

1014. but also trust him with the future.

  1015. See, there's a folly of self-confident

  1016. planning.

1017. A lot of us like to plan. You like to

1018. plan. A lot of us are planners. We enjoy

  1019. planning.

1020. Get things lined out. We feel efficient.

1021. We feel effective. I know where I'm

1022. going. I know what I'm doing. And if we

1023. don't do planning, some of us are just

1024. not going to make it. But

1025. James here addresses if we have gone too

1026. far in keeping God out of this

1027. these I love this whole scenario he

1028. paints here like people going to

1029. investments and marketing and you know

1030. all this and he says oh you got these

1031. plans today tomorrow we're going to go

1032. here go there spend and sell invest get

1033. all this profit and such he's like you

1034. don't even know what tomorrow is going

1035. to be you don't even know if you're

  1036. going to be alive

1037. so the issue is not planning itself

1038. James says but it's planning without

1039. reference to God. That's what it is.

  1040. It's like

  1041. it's like building a building a sand

  1042. castle at low tide.

  1043. You know, [clears throat]

1044. I grew up in a town called Thorndale,

1045. Texas. It's in central Texas.

1046. Uh Post Oak, Savannah, Mosqu Farmland.

1047. My family's been there since the 1800s.

1048. It's kind of near Austin, Rockdale,

1049. Cameron, Milm County is where we're at.

1050. for uh trips. What we would often do is

1051. we' we'd often go down to the coast.

1052. That was our vacation. It's always

1053. pretty much to the coast. We'd either go

1054. to Rockport, which is neat, you know,

1055. the beaches there, all rocky and shells.

1056. Lots of things things you can find.

  1057. They're good fishing, too. We'd also

1058. come down here to Galveastston.

  1059. And

1060. turns out, I didn't know this as a kid,

1061. but I'd learned it. Did you know that we

1062. have some of the best the world's best

1063. sand castle sand over here at Galveston?

1064. People complain about the water. We have

1065. there are competitions that are held

1066. here in Galveastston uh because of the

  1067. sand.

1068. Well, we go and we'd build sand castles,

1069. my brother and I, and we enjoyed it,

1070. right? Enjoyed building those things up,

1071. you know, and you got to get the the,

1072. you know, the texture just right and

1073. everything the right water amount of

1074. water and everything. You pack it

1075. together. It's beautiful and such. But a

1076. lot of times the best sand is right

1077. there, right? Right. Right. That water's

1078. edge and you wait, especially when you

1079. wait for that tide to go out, you get

1080. some really good sand, you get some

1081. shells, you know, some crabs, whatever.

1082. he could really make a nice nice castle.

1083. And so we do that. But inevitably what

1084. happens, the waves start coming in and

1085. before you know it, they start to reach

  1086. the castle and

1087. doesn't take long and it melts away and

1088. it's gone. Hours of work, it's all gone.

  1089. We knew that.

  1090. That's fine with a sand castle.

1091. It's not fine when it's your life.

1092. Parable of the builders, Jesus. You get

1093. that? You have to build your life on the

1094. rock. He not only who hears these

1095. sayings of mine, but do but does them.

1096. And you notice there that whenever Jesus

1097. is talking about those two people, he's

1098. they both hear his sayings. But the

1099. difference is one of them does them and

  1100. one of them doesn't. There's something

1101. else too you notice about that is that

1102. even the one who does it, he's not

1103. protected from the waves. I the waves

1104. are still going to come. There's not

1105. like a guarantee of life of ease. The

1106. waves are going to still come. But the

1107. thing is is his house is going to stand

1108. though versus the other man.

1109. Why? Because he's planned with God. They

1110. both built houses. Only one of them

1111. had God in his plans.

1112. So submission means as James is talking

1113. about here acknowledging our limited

1114. knowledge of all things and also our

  1115. very fragile

  1116. brief life

1117. and so I have to develop a posture of

1118. God dependent planning that's what has

1119. to happen it's a posture of dependence

1120. instead James said what you ought to say

1121. if the Lord wills we shall live and do

1122. this or that. This is not a cliche. You

1123. know, it's people have used it as a

1124. cliche, but what James is talking about

1125. here and the way that we are to use it,

1126. it's not a cliche. It is a confession of

1127. dependence. That's really what it is.

  1128. So,

1129. see all right Sunday even Sunday evening

1130. or Wednesday evening, you know, if the

1131. Lord wills or the creek rises. That's

  1132. what we say, right?

1133. Paul in Acts chapter 18, he said this.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

1134. He said, "I will return to you if God

  1135. wills it."

  1136. Proverbs 16:9,

    Proverbs 16:9

1137. "The heart of man plans his way, but the

  1138. Lord establishes

  1139. his steps."

1140. A submitted faith makes plans

  1141. with open hands,

1142. ready for God to be the one to direct

  1143. them. You see,

  1144. finally,

1145. the sin of presumption. That's what

1146. James is addressing here in verses 16

1147. and 17. The rejoicing in all of their

1148. boastings. He says it's evil

1149. boasting. Here is what it's giving glory

1150. to oneself. Again, glorifying yourself

1151. like God. Glorifying yourself rather

1152. than glorifying God. Humanism. That's

1153. what it is. Taking credit for what only

  1154. God controls.

  1155. Jeremiah 9:23-24.

    Jeremiah 9:23–24

1156. You know this. Let not the wise man

1157. boast in his wisdom. But let him who

1158. boasts boast in this that he understands

  1159. and knows me. 1 Corinthians 4:7.

    1 Corinthians 4:7

1160. What do you have? Paul asked them.

1161. that you did not receive. See what he's

1162. saying there? This the people in Corinth

  1163. thought what? They're like they're the

1164. originators of He says, you know,

1165. everything you have, you received.

1166. It's like what Job says, I came into

1167. this world naked and I will enter it

1168. naked. God giveth, God taketh away.

  1169. Praise be to God.

1170. Submission is not just avoiding doing

1171. wrong. James is saying here it's doing

1172. the right thing we already know to do

1173. because as he mentions here

1174. at the very last he says therefore to

1175. him that knoweth to do good and doeth it

1176. not to him it is sin delayed obedience

1177. is disobedience that's what James is

1178. saying here so I'm going to have

1179. planning with God in mind and I am going

1180. to do what I know to do and so often my

1181. friends the problems that we have in our

  1182. spiritual life,

1183. it's because I'm just not doing the

1184. simple things that God has called me to

  1185. do.

1186. Had a brother one time, his marriage was

1187. absolutely falling apart. And you know,

1188. whenever I had been talking to him and

  1189. his wife, and it's I I had I had

1190. actually just gotten to Waller. I hadn't

1191. been to Waller all that long. And uh

  1192. I've been there for a while and I've

1193. been there for 17 years. I'd only been

1194. there for a couple and uh early mid20s

1195. when I was there and and then he

1196. turns out their problems they had been

1197. going on for decades and uh

1198. been studying with them for a while. You

1199. know what he wanted to do almost every

1200. study? He wanted to say the Greek, I

1201. want to get out the Greek. I want to see

1202. what the Greek has to say about this.

  1203. He's looking for loopholes. That's what

1204. he was doing. Really is. It's like,

1205. brother, the answer is not in the Greek.

1206. The answer is staring you right in the

  1207. face. Love your wife.

1208. The things that we need to do are not

1209. hard to understand. The things that we

1210. need to perform are not difficult for us

1211. to comprehend. A child can understand

  1212. it.

1213. The issue is not because I don't know.

  1214. It's because the I don't want to. That's

1215. where it comes to. That's what James is

1216. getting at here. If you know to do it,

1217. then do it. My dear friend, my dear

1218. brother, my dear sister in Christ,

  1219. simply do it.

  1220. The conclusion

1221. is victory. You see, that's what it is.

1222. Victory and submission. That's the

1223. that's the conclusion. And James gives

1224. us a full picture of of this victory.

1225. I'm going to get to that in just a

  1226. second.

1227. He has shown us it's about rejecting

1228. pride and selfish desire, selfish

1229. desires in one through verses 1-5. It's

1230. about humbling oneself before God and

1231. resisting the devil. Verses 6-10.

  1232. It's about living under God's authority

1233. in our speech and also judgment and

1234. allowing him to be the judge. Verses

1235. 11-2. And then in verses 13-1 17, it is

1236. trusting God not just with my present

1237. situation, but also with the future and

  1238. avoiding the self-confident presumption

1239. that again I am somehow in control.

1240. And so what can I do at the end of the

1241. day? simply do what God has told me to

1242. do. Be faithful in a few things.

1243. Quiet, peaceable life. Love the Lord

1244. your God. Love your neighbor as

  1245. yourself.

1246. So, as James tells us here, it's a faith

1247. that submit. This submits. That's the

1248. faith that wins over pride, over sin,

1249. over the enemy, and over the anxiety of

1250. the unknown future. So, it's a call to

1251. action that James gives us here. Number

1252. one, I will honestly identify areas of

1253. my life where I have resisted God's

  1254. authority.

1255. Number two, I will deliberately step

1256. toward God with all humility, draw near

  1257. to my savior,

1258. and the enemy will flee.

1259. I will fully trust in God's sovereignty.

  1260. and province pro promises.

1261. I'll leave you with one last little

1262. little bit of u naval maritime

1263. information that I I learned but was

  1264. interesting.

  1265. Sailors have a custom

1266. and in fact the sailors of of the age of

1267. exploration would even write this on

1268. their maps and in their in their memoirs

  1269. and such.

  1270. Deo volente.

  1271. It's a Latin phrase.

  1272. God willing.

1273. That's what it means. Deo valente. God

  1274. willing.

1275. They would do this before setting out

1276. because they knew that the ste the seas

1277. were unpredictable, the storms could

1278. arise without warning and that their own

1279. skill could only take them so far.

1280. It was not a phrase of superstition but

1281. again it was a phrase that was a

1282. declaration of dependence upon the one

1283. true almighty God. So in the same way,

1284. my friend, a believer who truly submits

  1285. to God

  1286. is to write,

  1287. if the Lord wills

1288. over every plan, every ambition,

  1289. every tomorrow.

  1290. Deo Valente.

1291. It's not a lack of confidence on my

  1292. part.

1293. deepest confidence possible because it

1294. rests not in myself but rather in the so

1295. sovereign divine almighty allloving God

  1296. supreme God.

1297. So my friend, in my heart, I will humble

1298. myself before God and surrender all

  1299. selfish passions.

  1300. In my relationships,

1301. I'm going to speak life

  1302. and edification, not slander.

  1303. For my future,

  1304. plan prayerfully, not presumptuously.

1305. In all struggles, resist the devil.

  1306. Draw near to God.

1307. And in obedience, what am I going to do?

1308. I'm going to do the good that I already

1309. know I ought to be doing every day.

  1310. So, dear one,

1311. today, will you humble yourself before

  1312. the Lord?

1313. Will you submit your present struggles,

1314. your relationships, your ambitions, your

  1315. future into his

  1316. omnipotent hands?

1317. Remember the promise of James 4:10.

    James 4:10

1318. Humble yourselves in the sight of the

1319. Lord and he will lift you up. The

1320. victory of submission. God himself will

1321. do what? Raise you up, restore you, and

  1322. lead you.

1323. If you this evening wish to come to the

  1324. Lord, be baptized,

1325. whether it is do you need the prayers of

1326. the congregation, why don't you submit

1327. to the will of Jesus as we stand and as

  1328. we
