  1. We do ask that the Lord would speak this

  2. morning as we come to his word. Would

  3. you open up your Bibles to John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. 1, the book of John, chapter 1, if you

    John 1 chapter mention

  5. could open there with me.

  6. Let's pray as we come to the Lord's word

  7. this morning. Let's pray.

  8. Lord, as we come to you this morning, we

  9. ask for your help.

  10. Lord, we are weak.

  11. I am weak. My words are weak.

  12. But Lord, we ask that you would speak by

  13. your spirit this morning. Lord, would we

  14. listen to your very words and understand

  15. them and apply them to our lives? Help

  16. us, Lord. Help us to understand these

  17. truths,

  18. to praise you, and to glorify you

  19. because Christ dwelt on this earth.

  20. Help us now in Jesus name. Amen. Amen.

  21. Well, if you could look at John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  22. 1 with me, I'm going to read the whole

  23. passage from 1 to 18. So from John

    John 1:1–18

  24. chapter 1, verses 1-18. And as I read, I

  25. want you to think on the identity of the

  26. word. Who is the word? What do we know

  27. about the word?

  28. As I read John chapter 1, think about

    John 1 chapter mention

  29. who is the word.

  30. John chapter 1 verse one says this.

    John 1 chapter mention

  31. In the beginning was the word

  32. and the word was with God and the word

  33. was God. He was in the beginning with

  34. God. All things were made through him

  35. and without him was not anything made

  36. that was made. In him was life

  37. and the life was the light of men. The

  38. light shines in the darkness and the

  39. darkness has not overcome it. There was

  40. a man sent from God whose name was John.

  41. He came as a witness to bear witness

  42. about the light that all might believe

  43. through him. He was not the light but

  44. came to bear witness about the light.

  45. The true light which gives light to

  46. everyone was coming into the world. He

  47. was in the world and the world was made

  48. through him. Yet the world did not know

  49. him. He came to his own and his own

  50. people did not receive him. But to all

  51. who did receive him, who believed in his

  52. name, he gave the right to become

  53. children of God. who were born not of

  54. blood, nor of the will of flesh, nor of

  55. the will of man, but of God. And the

  56. word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

  57. And we have seen his glory,

  58. glory as of the only son from the

  59. father, full of grace and truth. John

  60. bore witness about him and cried out,

  61. "This was he of whom I said, he who

  62. comes after me ranks before me because

  63. he was before me.

  64. For from his fullness, we have all

  65. received grace upon grace. For the law

  66. was given through Moses. Grace and truth

  67. came through Jesus Christ. No one has

  68. ever seen God. The only God who is at

  69. the Father's side. He has made him

  70. known. This is the Lord's word to us

  71. this morning. In the beginning was the

  72. word.

  73. In the beginning was the word. and the

  74. word was with God and the word was God.

  75. I wonder how many times you've heard

  76. that read.

  77. If you've grown up in church, I'm sure

  78. that you've heard this tons of times.

  79. These are popular verses. These are

  80. popular words. These words are read

  81. many, many times. There's actually

  82. there's a musical about the Bible and

  83. the first song is all about these

  84. verses. The be in the beginning was the

  85. word and the word was with God and the

  86. word was God. We hear these words all

  87. the time.

  88. But how often do we really take time to

  89. think through what these words mean? The

  90. first chapter of John can actually feel

  91. quite confusing on first glance. It can

  92. feel quite confusing.

  93. Do you know I used to tell people who

  94. were interested in reading the Bible,

  95. they came to me, this was their first

  96. time, they had never read the Bible

  97. before. I used to tell them the best

  98. place for you to start would be the book

  99. of John. I don't know why I did. It was

  100. like the popular thing to do when I was

  101. in school or in college.

  102. I don't know if that was the best

  103. advice. The Lord speaks through his

  104. word. But when you open to John 1 verse

  105. one and see, in the beginning was the

  106. word and the word was with God. The word

  107. was God and the word, the word, the

  108. word.

  109. It raises so many questions. Who or what

  110. is the word? What do you mean in the

  111. beginning? What is this light we're

  112. talking about?

  113. How does this word take on flesh?

  114. There are questions that arise as we

  115. read John chapter 1. It can be quite

    John 1 chapter mention

  116. confusing.

  117. Our series this Christmas is called

  118. Christ incarnate.

  119. Christ incarnate. Christ the savior of

  120. the world who is God becoming man,

  121. taking on flesh and dwelling on this

  122. earth. And these verses through John 1

  123. are clearly talking about Jesus Christ.

  124. They're clearly talking about Jesus

  125. Christ. The word mentioned in these

  126. verses is Jesus and Jesus is God. Jesus

  127. is the true light and Jesus dwelt on

  128. this earth. He lived on this earth. But

  129. how do we know that the word is Jesus?

  130. Well, we look at the description

  131. throughout the verses. The plainest

  132. evidence really is found in um verses 14

  133. to 18 that the word dwelt among us.

  134. We know that Jesus he lived on this

  135. earth.

  136. And then in verse 17, verse 17 is the

  137. only mention of Jesus' name in the whole

  138. passage. Verse 17, uh the grace and

  139. truth came through Jesus Christ. Jesus

  140. Christ is the word. This passage written

  141. by John is talking about Jesus the

  142. Christ.

  143. This was written by John who was one of

  144. Jesus disciples, one of Jesus' closest

  145. friends and followers. John writes a

  146. firsthand primary account about Jesus'

  147. life. This is a primary account of Jesus

  148. life. John saying that that the word

  149. dwelt among us. He is speaking from

  150. firthand experience. He walked by Jesus.

  151. He walked with Jesus on this earth. John

  152. is speaking is writing from firsthand

  153. experience and John he's writing to a

  154. mixed audience to a mixed audience to

  155. Jewish people to Gentiles and to

  156. Christians

  157. as the original audience would have

  158. received this book of John. I wonder

  159. what their first thoughts would have

  160. been as they opened this prologue. As

  161. they opened to this book and read these

  162. words, what would their thoughts have

  163. been for the gentile, the secular, the

  164. unreligious,

  165. their immediate thoughts would have been

  166. probably that this is speaking of

  167. someone with power, with power, someone

  168. who has power, someone who is mighty,

  169. someone who is the creator, and someone

  170. who dwelt among them. For the Christian,

  171. I think the Christian reading this would

  172. know exactly who this is talking about

  173. as they begin,

  174. they would exactly who this was talking

  175. about, that this passage is talking

  176. about Jesus,

  177. their personal savior.

  178. And then for the Jewish reader, as they

  179. read the opening words of John chapter

    John 1 chapter mention

  180. 1, in the beginning was the word. You

  181. know where their mind would go? right

  182. back to Genesis chapter 1, the first

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  183. words of the Bible. In the beginning,

  184. God.

  185. The Jewish reader, their minds would go

  186. right back to Genesis 1. In the

  187. beginning, God.

  188. And they would read on with great

  189. intrigue as they would read this and

  190. then come come to verse 17, which talks

  191. about the law

  192. and Moses.

  193. The Jewish reader would be really

  194. intrigued as they read this passage.

  195. And I find it interesting that John, he

  196. doesn't choose to use the name Jesus

  197. until verse 17.

  198. He chooses to use the the word.

  199. And I think not using the word Jesus,

  200. not using the name Jesus would catch the

  201. attention of those people who are

  202. reading the book. It would catch the

  203. attention of the Jewish readers and it

  204. would catch the attention of the

  205. Gentiles immediately.

  206. They wouldn't switch off because this is

  207. about Jesus, but they would be quite

  208. interested in who is this person who

  209. obviously has power

  210. and who was in the beginning. And I

  211. think it's really intriguing how the

  212. Jewish people would have read these

  213. verses. As I said, it points back to

  214. Genesis chapter 1. For them it would

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  215. have thought they would have gone

  216. straight back to Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  217. They would need to think about how the

  218. word was used in Genesis chapter 1. This

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  219. term word

  220. commentators say that the use of the

  221. word the term word in this is a verbal

  222. echo back to Genesis 1. It's echoing

  223. back for those Jewish readers right back

  224. to Genesis chapter 1. In Genesis chapter

Genesis 1 chapter mention Genesis 1 chapter mention

  225. 1, there's repetition of the word spoke,

  226. which is the word word. God's word. God

  227. spoke. God said, and if you've read

  228. Genesis 1, you know this. God spoke or

  229. God said, "Let there be light." And what

  230. happened? There was light. God spoke,

  231. "Let the earth sprout vegetation and

  232. plants." And what happened? There was

  233. vegetation and plants. God spoke, "Let

  234. us make man in our own image." What

  235. happened? Man was made in the image of

  236. God. God speaking, God's word in Genesis

  237. 1 holds mighty power. Power of the

  238. creator.

  239. And now John writes that there's a word,

  240. a personified word, a person who is the

  241. word. And the connection has to be made

  242. here between the word spoken about in

  243. John 1 and the words God spoke in

  244. Genesis chapter 1. This word in John 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  245. has power

  246. is mighty is the word of God. The

  247. connection is clear looking back to

  248. creation when you look at verse three of

  249. John chapter 1. Verse three says this.

    John 1 chapter mention

  250. All things were made through him. All

  251. things were made through the word and

  252. without him was not anything made that

  253. was made. The word is creator.

  254. The word was there in the beginning and

  255. the word is God.

  256. Jesus, the word is God. Jesus was there

  257. in the beginning. And not only was he

  258. there in the beginning, but he held an

  259. active part in the creation of the

  260. world. Jesus held an active part in the

  261. creation of the world.

  262. We need to grasp here in these verses

  263. that Jesus is God. We can't just skip

  264. that over. It's a clear truth. It's a

  265. clear truth throughout scripture. But I

  266. think this passage here is one of the

  267. clearest passages that talks about Jesus

  268. being God in all of scripture. Jesus is

  269. God. And there are some in this world

  270. that try to distort that fact. There are

  271. some people in this world that try to

  272. distort the fact. Jehovah's Witnesses,

  273. for example, when they read this, their

  274. Bible says, "In the beginning was the

  275. word. The word was with God and the word

  276. was a god. Small G. Jehovah's Witnesses

  277. believe that this says that the word is

  278. a god. They changed the translation.

  279. But this was not how the original Greek

  280. texts were written.

  281. The original Greek text, it is clear in

  282. the original Greek that Jesus is God.

  283. The word is God. Not a God. He is God.

  284. If we need to grasp this fact and

  285. without this truth, we minimize the

  286. truth of scripture. Jehovah's Witnesses,

  287. they read that they're minimizing the

  288. truth that really is there in scripture

  289. that Jesus is God. The word personified

  290. is Jesus and he is God and he holds the

  291. power of God. The word is power as

  292. mentioned in Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  293. And not only does the word of God hold

  294. power as mentioned in Genesis 1, the

  295. word of God is also always absolutely

  296. true.

  297. What else do we call the word of God? We

  298. call the Bible the word of God, don't

  299. we?

  300. As we read the Bible, we talk about

  301. reading the word of God. When God spoke

  302. and gave us his word and Hebrews 1 talks

  303. about this, Hebrew Hebrews 1 talks about

  304. scripture. We're going to look at

  305. Hebrews 1 next week, but Hebrews 1 opens

  306. with this. Long ago to a Jewish

  307. audience, it says this. Long ago, at

  308. many times and in many ways, God spoke

  309. to our fathers by the prophets. That's

  310. the Old Testament being written. God

  311. spoke by the prophets. The Old Testament

  312. was written. But in these last days, in

  313. the recent days before Hebrews was

  314. written, he has spoken to us by his son.

  315. God spoke by his son. God spoke through

  316. Jesus. Jesus who is God spoke. The word

  317. mentioned in John 1 is also the

  318. absolutely true declarative factual word

  319. of God. Jesus came as God bringing the

  320. true word of God. And the message that

  321. Jesus came to proclaim is mentioned

  322. frequently through the gospel of John

  323. and is mentioned here in verses 4

  324. through to 13 that Jesus is the light

  325. and life. Jesus is the light and life.

  326. Jesus states this purpose in his I am

  327. statements throughout the book of John.

  328. John verse 8:12 says or chapter 8:12

  329. says this.

  330. I am the light of the world.

  331. Whoever follows me will not walk in

  332. darkness but will have the light of

  333. life. And John 14:6 we know this.

    John 14:6

  334. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  335. Jesus is the light of the world and

  336. Jesus is the life.

  337. Jesus is the light and the life. And

  338. John mentions this in his prologue so

  339. that the readers would have this in

  340. their mind as they continue on in the

  341. book. Look at verses four and five with

  342. me. In him in the word was life and the

  343. life was the light of men. The light

  344. shines in the darkness and the darkness

  345. has not overcome it. in the word and

  346. Jesus has found life.

  347. He gave life in creation and he gives

  348. lives spiritually to those who believe

  349. in him. And that life is light for all

  350. of us. Jesus is the light of the world.

  351. And Jesus being the light means that

  352. he's greater than any darkness.

  353. As verse five points out,

  354. this is one illustration that we can all

  355. understand. Light always defeats

  356. darkness. There's never enough darkness

  357. to defeat light. If you shine a light in

  358. darkness, it always shines brighter than

  359. the darkness. Always.

  360. The darkness mentioned here are the

  361. things of the devil, the things that are

  362. against God. But they can never overcome

  363. the light. Jesus came as the true light

  364. presenting life to those who believe.

  365. But not everyone believed in him. Look

  366. at verse nine with me.

  367. The true light which gives light to

  368. everyone was coming into the world. He

  369. was in the world and the world was made

  370. through him. Yet the world did not know

  371. him.

  372. He came to his own and his own people

  373. did not receive him. The word true light

  374. used here in verse 9 is revealing that

  375. Jesus is the correct light. He's the

  376. proper light. He is the the light, the

  377. only light.

  378. And it also shows us that there are

  379. false lights. If he has to be told, if

  380. we have to be told that he's the true

  381. light, there must be false lights that

  382. don't give life. A light opposed to the

  383. true light. People follow false lights

  384. all the time and reject the true light.

  385. That's what's true in verse 11.

  386. Jesus made everyone in this world. Yet,

  387. everyone in this world frequently

  388. rejects Jesus. More often than not,

  389. people reject Jesus than believe in him.

  390. They turn to their own idols. They turn

  391. to their false lights

  392. rather than turning to Jesus.

  393. And I wonder if this morning you're

  394. rejecting the true light, Jesus.

  395. Are you rejecting the true light and

  396. going after these false lights? His own

  397. people rejected him. Verse 11 tells us

  398. that he came to his own, but his own

  399. people rejected him. That's the Jewish

  400. people, the nation of Israel, as

  401. mentioned in the Old Testament, they

  402. were the first people who God initially

  403. promised his blessing to.

  404. If you've read the Old Testament at all,

  405. you'll know that the Israelites, the

  406. people of God, they reject God all the

  407. time. The people of Israel throughout

  408. the Old Testament reject God all the

  409. time. In Exodus 32,

  410. just after God had established his law

  411. with his people, just after the Ten

  412. Commandments had been established, while

  413. Moses was still up Mount Si meeting with

  414. God personally,

  415. the Israelites, what did they decide to

  416. do? They decided to gather all of their

  417. gold together. They threw it in the fire

  418. and they built a golden calf. They built

  419. an idol which they worshiped instead of

  420. worshiping God. They rejected the true

  421. light God and they worshiped their

  422. man-made idol, the golden calf.

  423. God had rescued them out of slavery in

  424. Egypt. God established a sacred covenant

  425. with them. Yet they rejected him while

  426. Moses was still up the mountain speaking

  427. face to face with God. They rejected God

  428. and they worshiped this golden calf. How

  429. brutal is that rejection

  430. to reject God who created and loved

  431. them?

  432. It's brutal rejection. And that is

  433. exactly what happened to Jesus when he

  434. came to this earth. He came to his own

  435. people, but his own people rejected him.

  436. The Jewish people

  437. wanted nothing to do with Jesus. So much

  438. so that they crucified him, that they

  439. put him to the cross.

  440. And we wanted nothing of Jesus as well.

  441. We turn away from him as well.

  442. We turn a blind eye naturally to the

  443. true light and follow false lights.

  444. We follow the false light of popularity,

  445. follow the false light of job

  446. promotions,

  447. follow false light of man-made

  448. religions.

  449. Do you follow false lights? Or do you

  450. believe in the true light of Jesus this

  451. morning?

  452. Do we follow false lights or do we

  453. follow the true light of Jesus? Well,

  454. look at verse 12 to see what happens to

  455. those who do follow the true light of

  456. Jesus. Verse 12 says this.

  457. But to all who did receive him, who

  458. believed in his name, he gave the right

  459. to become children of God, who were born

  460. not of blood, nor of the will of flesh,

  461. nor of the will of man, but of God.

  462. To all who believe, to all who receive

  463. Jesus and believe in his name, who trust

  464. in him, they will be called children of

  465. God, adopted into the family of God.

  466. Brought into the family of God by the

  467. sovereign will of God.

  468. To all who believe in his name, they

  469. will be brought into the family of God.

  470. What a glorious thought that is this

  471. morning, isn't it?

  472. that you can be called a child of God as

  473. you come to him the true light this

  474. morning.

  475. Come to him the true light and he will

  476. give you life eternal as a child of God.

  477. Turn away from our sin. Turn away from

  478. our rejection of him and trust in him

  479. and he will give you true life, eternal

  480. life by the will of God.

  481. The word here is God himself. The word

  482. here is creator. The word here is the

  483. true light. Jesus is the true light.

  484. But importantly, as we look at these

  485. verses and look at this last section

  486. in the passage this morning, the word

  487. mentioned here

  488. dwelt among us. Jesus came in flesh and

  489. dwelt among us.

  490. Jesus is Christ incarnate,

  491. the savior of the world who dwelt among

  492. us on this earth and he brings fully he

  493. brings complete grace and truth.

  494. Jesus firstly in in verse 14 is the word

  495. who became flesh. Look at verse 14 again

  496. with me. And the word became flesh and

  497. dwelt among us.

  498. The word became flesh and dwelt among

  499. us. In the original Greek, this word for

  500. God dwelling among us

  501. literally means he pitched his tent.

  502. He put his tent up or he tabernacled

  503. among us.

  504. This is an illustration that John's

  505. using here. And to fully understand this

  506. illustration, we have to look back to

  507. the chapters in Exodus that we were

  508. looking at earlier on. Remember the

  509. rejection of God. The people rejected

  510. God. As Moses was out up Mount Si, they

  511. built the golden calf. They rejected

  512. God. And then as Moses, he comes down

  513. the mountain.

  514. And he is stunned to find that the

  515. people, they've turned away from God.

  516. They've rejected God. And they've

  517. worshiped the calf.

  518. Moses at this point knows that the

  519. Israelites, they are fully deserving of

  520. God's wrath.

  521. He knows that they're fully deserving of

  522. God's wrath. They deserve to be

  523. destroyed because they've rejected God.

  524. So Moses, what does he do? Well, he

  525. intercedes for the people. He intercedes

  526. and stands between them and God and asks

  527. for forgiveness for his people. To do

  528. this, Moses, he met with God in a place

  529. called the tent of meeting. The tent of

  530. meeting is what God established with

  531. Moses with his people so that he could

  532. meet with them regularly.

  533. And in Exodus 33, speaking of Moses

  534. meeting regularly with God in the tent,

  535. it says that he would speak to God face

  536. to face. He would speak face to face

  537. with God as man would speak with his

  538. friend.

  539. Moses in the tent of meeting would meet

  540. face to face with God as God's presence

  541. dwelt on this tent. goes Moses had a

  542. personal relationship with God and met

  543. personally with God as God chose to rest

  544. his presence among his people on that

  545. tent. And then later in Exodus, God he

  546. commands the Israelites to construct the

  547. tabernacle which is where his presence

  548. will dwell with them and continue to go

  549. with them as they go through the

  550. wilderness.

  551. This illustration that John is using

  552. here of uh the of the word pitching his

  553. tent among us

  554. takes us right back to the tent of

  555. meeting.

  556. Jesus came and shows us that his

  557. personal dwelling place is back with his

  558. people. God's personal dwelling place is

  559. with his people. Just like the tent of

  560. meeting, just like Moses meeting face to

  561. face with God like one speaks to a

  562. friend.

  563. The dwelling place of God is with man.

  564. Again, humans always desire to be in

  565. God's presence. From the beginning of

  566. creation

  567. until now, they actually long for being

  568. in God's presence. They long for the day

  569. that's spoken of in Revelation 21 when

  570. the dwelling place of God will be with

  571. man and when they will be his people and

  572. he will be their God. Why do people long

  573. for this? Well, because people were

  574. created to be in relationship with God.

  575. You were created to be with in

  576. relationship with God.

  577. And since the fall, since Genesis 3,

  578. when sin entered the world, people have

  579. rejected God and they've been separated

  580. from his presence.

  581. We long for the day when we'll be united

  582. with God in his presence. And the Jewish

  583. people, they longed for the day when God

  584. would come uh as and send his Messiah in

  585. the flesh

  586. to save them.

  587. And he did that when Jesus the word

  588. became flesh and pitched his tent among

  589. them

  590. and dwelt among them.

  591. Pitched his tent of meeting.

  592. It was a glorious day when the presence

  593. of God is back with man. When Jesus

  594. Christ incarnate,

  595. God

  596. dwelt on this earth.

  597. And that's really what this series this

  598. Christmas is all about. Christ

  599. incarnate. And that's what this season

  600. of Christmas is all about. Christ who

  601. came to this earth. God coming down on

  602. earth and dwelling on this earth.

  603. John's gospel account of Jesus is quite

  604. interesting because he doesn't actually

  605. tell us much about the birth scene of

  606. Jesus. Whereas Luke and Matthew, they

  607. give us clear narratives through the

  608. birth story of Jesus. And Matthew as he

  609. gives his clear narrative of the birth

  610. story of Jesus, he talks about

  611. fulfillment of prophecy. Matthew talks

  612. about fulfillment of prophecy. And one

  613. prophecy that was fulfilled was in

  614. Matthew 1:18. It says this, "The virgin

    Matthew 1:18

  615. shall conceive and bear a son, and they

  616. shall call his name Emmanuel, which

  617. means God with us." Jesus is Emmanuel.

  618. God with us. The word made flesh, Jesus

  619. is Christ incarnate.

  620. What should we then do with this news

  621. that Jesus

  622. is Christ incarnate? Well, first of all,

  623. what we should do, we should rejoice.

  624. We should rejoice. We should have joy

  625. that God himself dwelt on this earth.

  626. The Jewish people, they waited for

  627. centuries for the Messiah to come but

  628. never saw him. We live on a part in the

  629. timeline

  630. after Jesus has come and we can look

  631. back and know that the savior of the

  632. world has dwelt on this earth. God has

  633. dwelt on this earth

  634. and that we can have salvation in him.

  635. We should rejoice that God dwelt on this

  636. earth. Secondly, we should believe in

  637. the true light that I mentioned before.

  638. We should believe in Jesus the true

  639. light. And then thirdly through that

  640. belief we should have a personal

  641. relationship with God.

  642. God is a personal God. Jesus dwelling on

  643. this earth. God dwelling on this earth

  644. was personal. It was intentional.

  645. It was not accidental.

  646. God is a personal God. He's not one that

  647. is far from us. He is personal. And

  648. Jesus dwelling among us means that he

  649. knows exactly what it was like to live

  650. as a human, to suffer, and that he can

  651. sympathize with us, knowing what it's

  652. like to be a human. Hebrews 4 speaks of

  653. this fact. Hebrews 4 says this, "For we

  654. do not have a high priest who is unable

  655. to sympathize with our weaknesses, but

  656. one who in every respect has been

  657. tempted as we are. Yet he's without sin.

  658. Jesus dwelling among us creates a

  659. personal relationship between God and

  660. man.

  661. And this personal relationship truly is

  662. amazing. God really dwelt on this earth.

  663. God really sympathizes with us. That's

  664. not the only amazing truth in these

  665. passages

  666. and God dwelling with us. In Jesus

  667. dwelling among us, he also was revealing

  668. God's glory to us. Look at verses 14 to

  669. 17. the glory of the Lord that's full of

  670. grace and truth. Look at verses 14 to 17

  671. with me. And the word became flesh and

  672. dwelt among us. And we have seen his

  673. glory,

  674. glory as of the only son from the

  675. father, full of grace and truth. And

  676. then down to verse 16 with me. For from

  677. his fullness we have all received grace

  678. upon grace.

  679. For the law was given through Moses.

  680. Grace and truth came through Jesus

  681. Christ. No one has ever seen God. The

  682. only God who is at the father's side. He

  683. has made him known.

  684. Next week we're going to talk a little

  685. bit more about the glory of the Lord,

  686. the glory of Jesus as we look at Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  687. chapter 1. But there's a couple things

  688. that I want to mention about God's

  689. glory, about Jesus glory this morning.

  690. Going back to our narrative in Exodus

  691. that I've been going through a little

  692. bit. In Exodus 33, after Moses

  693. interceded for the Israelites, Moses, he

  694. asked God a question.

  695. He asked God, "Could I see your glory?

  696. Could I see your glory?" And the Lord,

  697. he agrees to let his goodness pass in

  698. front of Moses. But God states that he

  699. will, while he will allow this, Moses

  700. cannot look on his face. For man cannot

  701. see God and live.

  702. God then hides Moses in the crack in a

  703. rock and allows Moses to look upon his

  704. goodness as his goodness passes by.

  705. But he does not allow him to look at the

  706. fullness of God's glory because God is

  707. too glorious for man to look up. But

  708. when Christ came, the God man, he

  709. revealed his glory on earth.

  710. This truth is truly amazing.

  711. Think about how John has set this text

  712. out for a second that the word he is

  713. God. He is creator. He brought the true

  714. light. He dwelt among us in flesh and he

  715. shows his glory to us. The glory of God

  716. is shown to us through Jesus.

  717. Jesus came so that we could see. He

  718. became like us so that we could see

  719. God's glory.

  720. So that we could see the glory of God.

  721. Christ dwelling on this earth brought

  722. God's glory before men. His glory as it

  723. says in verse 14, which is full of grace

  724. and truth.

  725. The end of verse 14, it's full of grace

  726. and truth. This characteristic of grace

  727. and truth has been on display by God all

  728. throughout the Bible from the beginning

  729. of time. God's character never changes.

  730. God's character is always consistent.

  731. And these specific characteristics are

  732. evident all the way throughout the Old

  733. Testament. Although the translation is a

  734. little different. Again, as we look back

  735. in Exodus and the reading that we had

  736. this morning in Exodus 34, the Lord as

  737. he passes by Moses proclaims this in

  738. Exodus 34:6. The Lord passed before him

    Exodus 34:6

  739. and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord, a

  740. God merciful and gracious, slow to anger

  741. and abounding in steadfast love and

  742. faithfulness." God is abounding in

  743. steadfast love and faithfulness. This

  744. proclamation of him abounding in

  745. steadfast love and faithfulness is

  746. throughout the Old Testament, especially

  747. when he's reminding the Israelites of

  748. his covenant promises set with them.

  749. The word for steadfast love, hessed in

  750. the Hebrew language, could be translated

  751. to grace, God's grace.

  752. And the word his faithfulness, emit in

  753. the Hebrew language, could be translated

  754. to truth. So as God shows his steadfast

  755. love and faithfulness, God is really

  756. showing his grace and truth all the way

  757. throughout the Old Testament.

  758. God is showing his grace and truth. and

  759. he shows his grace and truth through

  760. Jesus. Now,

  761. John is presenting to us not only that

  762. Jesus is God, but also that God's

  763. characteristics are consistent all the

  764. way throughout the Bible.

  765. All the way throughout scripture, God is

  766. consistent in his character. And Jesus

  767. is full of grace and truth.

  768. Jesus being full of truth means that

  769. he's always consistent in his word, in

  770. his action, and he brings complete truth

  771. as well. Jesus is full of grace also.

  772. And John reiterates this fact in verse

  773. 16 that from his fullness, we have

  774. received grace upon grace.

  775. We see that truth in verse 16. Remember

  776. John, he is re he is writing as a

  777. Christian

  778. after Jesus has come. He's writing as a

  779. primary source who saw Jesus, believed

  780. in Jesus. And so when he writes, "We

  781. have received grace upon grace." He's

  782. writing about Christians. He's writing

  783. specifically about the first century

  784. Christians. And he's writing about all

  785. Christians since that those who believe

  786. in him have received grace upon grace.

  787. Grace, simply put, is a free gift

  788. that we don't deserve.

  789. It's grace that's mentioned in verse 12.

  790. When those who believe will be called

  791. children of God, that is God's grace to

  792. us.

  793. Even though we naturally reject God, we

  794. will be called children of God because

  795. of his grace to us.

  796. Because of his steadfast love,

  797. Jesus pours out his grace upon grace to

  798. those who believe. Even though we

  799. naturally reject him.

  800. Even though we naturally reject his law

  801. as well. Verse 17, it talks about the

  802. law that was given through Moses. For

  803. the law was given through Moses.

  804. Again, we see in Exodus that God, he

  805. gives his commandments.

  806. And he gives his commandments throughout

  807. the Old Testament. But this law that's

  808. mentioned here is specifically talking

  809. about the first five books of the Bible.

  810. the law that God's people are to follow,

  811. to live and to follow him. But the law

  812. that was given was never intended for

  813. their salvation. It was intended so that

  814. they could see their own sin,

  815. so that they could see the brokenness

  816. that they have and their need,

  817. their need for forgiveness.

  818. The law had trapped them in a desire for

  819. an unattainable righteousness. They

  820. could never perfectly follow the law. No

  821. one could ever perfectly follow the law.

  822. They needed

  823. they needed forgiveness. But when Jesus

  824. came and brought grace and truth, he

  825. made the ultimate way for people to be

  826. with God forever through grace and

  827. truth.

  828. Jesus had to be the one who was full of

  829. grace and truth. He had to be the only

  830. way to the father because he's in

  831. closest relationship with the father.

  832. And that's where I want us to finish

  833. today.

  834. Verse 18, it points it paints a picture

  835. of closeness and intimate nature of

  836. Jesus relationship with the father and

  837. what he's achieved

  838. without any help by any other. Look at

  839. verse 18 again. No one has ever seen

  840. God. The only God who's at the father's

  841. side, he has made him known. No one has

  842. ever seen God. As it said in Exodus, no

  843. one could look on the face of God and

  844. live.

  845. If we were just left in this fact, we'd

  846. be in trouble.

  847. If we were just left in the fact that no

  848. one has ever seen God,

  849. we'd be in trouble.

  850. But the only God

  851. who's at the father's side, that's

  852. Jesus. The only God who's at the

  853. father's side in closest relationship to

  854. is really one of the best ways that we

  855. could translate this as intimate

  856. language that Jesus is in closest

  857. relationship with the father. He who's

  858. in closest relationship with the father,

  859. he made God known to us. Jesus has made

  860. God known to us.

  861. He has made God known to everyone. This

  862. verse speaks of the exclusivity of

  863. Jesus. That Jesus is the only way to the

  864. father. That the one who's at the

  865. father's side is the only way for anyone

  866. to be with the father for the only way

  867. for anybody to be with God.

  868. As Jesus proclaims in John 14 that I am

  869. the way, the truth, and the life. No one

  870. can come to the father except through

  871. me. No one gets to heaven. No one

  872. becomes a child of God except through

  873. Jesus alone. The one who is in closest

  874. relationship with the father.

  875. Jesus the word made flesh who's full of

  876. grace and truth. He is the only way for

  877. you to know God. And he dwelt on this

  878. earth

  879. so that you could have a way to be with

  880. God forever.

  881. So, I'd encourage you this morning, if

  882. you don't know Jesus, if you're

  883. following those false lights that I

  884. mentioned earlier, turn away from your

  885. sin and follow Jesus, the true light who

  886. gives life.

  887. Follow him. Find personal relationship

  888. with God through Jesus this morning.

  889. and rejoice today that God, he loved you

  890. so much that his son came and dwelt on

  891. this earth and died so that you could

  892. have life in his name.

  893. I encourage you to remember Christ

  894. incarnate this Christmas. The word who

  895. made who became flesh, God himself

  896. became flesh and dwelt among us

  897. and he brought grace and truth as he

  898. dwelt among us. Let's remember that fact

  899. and rejoice this morning. Let's pray.

  900. Lord, we thank you for this truth.

  901. We thank you that Christ came, the word

  902. made flesh and dwelt among us. That

  903. we've seen his glory, the glory of the

  904. only son.

  905. Lord, we pray that we would know this

  906. truth and see the glory of God this

  907. morning.

  908. Lord, bring us into personal

  909. relationship with you this morning.

  910. Lord, I pray for those who don't know

  911. you this morning that they would turn

  912. from their sin and trust in you.

  913. Lord, help us to rejoice, to worship

  914. you. We thank you for this truth in

  915. Jesus name. Amen. Amen. Let's stand as

  916. we sing
