  1. Thank you. May be seated.

  2. Good morning everyone

  3. and on behalf of the the Heric family

  4. and I wish you a happy Christmas and I

  5. trust that the the new year coming will

  6. be blessed as well. I hope that you've

  7. had time and opportunity with your

  8. families over this holiday season uh to

  9. be together uh to rejoice in the

  10. goodness and grace of God

  11. uh to celebrate together. What a special

  12. time of year it is and we are thankful

  13. uh for these special opportunities.

  14. I started wearing glasses

  15. when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I

  16. was playing baseball

  17. and I was playing third base which is

  18. about 20 or so meters away from home

  19. plate and it was getting a little bit

  20. dark and I noticed as I was standing

  21. there waiting for the batter to

  22. hopefully hit the ball to me um that I

  23. wasn't really able to see the home plate

  24. or the batter very clearly. So I told

  25. the coach and then I told my parents and

  26. they arranged for me to have my eyes

  27. examined and of course been the first

  28. time I'd had that done. So everything

  29. was new. I sat in the chair and the the

  30. the eye doctor put this big machine in

  31. front of me, asked me to rest my chin on

  32. the on the chin holder and then he

  33. proceeded to,

  34. you know, put different lenses in in

  35. front of my my eyes and then he he would

  36. ask me questions like, is is this is

  37. number one clearer or is number two

  38. clearer? And through the process of

  39. examination, elimination and comparison,

  40. we eventually found out that I was

  41. nearsighted, which means I could see

  42. things reasonably clearly when they were

  43. up close, but as they got farther away,

  44. I had trouble with that. So they

  45. prescribed the glasses and I started

  46. wearing that was 55 years ago. Uh, so

  47. I've been wearing them for quite some

  48. time. But I was I was shortsighted. But

  49. I needed help to be able to see things

  50. clearly as they got farther away from

  51. me. I needed the assistance of those

  52. lenses to help me see properly.

  53. We've been working our way through this

  54. series over these last three weeks,

  55. Christ incarnate. Uh we saw at the

  56. beginning of the month that Christ is

  57. seen as the suffering servant from

  58. Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  59. that he is seen as the the word made

  60. flesh in John chapter 1. That he was

    John 1 chapter mention

  61. seen last week as Peter spoke as the the

  62. radiance of the father's glory in

  63. Hebrews chapter 1. This morning we're

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  64. going to see one more picture of Jesus

  65. Christ, one more portrait of Jesus

  66. Christ incarnate, and that is in

  67. Colossians chapter 1, the image of the

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  68. invisible God he's called there. Let's

  69. turn in our Bibles to Colossians chapter

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  70. 1

  71. and we'll read verses 15-

  72. 23.

  73. Colossians chapter 1:es

  74. 15-

  75. 23.

  76. Paul says, "He," speaking of Jesus, "He

  77. is the image of the invisible God, the

  78. firstborn of all creation.

  79. For by him all things were created in

  80. heaven and on earth, visible and

  81. invisible, whether thrones or dominions

  82. or rulers or authorities.

  83. All things were created through him and

  84. for him. And he is before all things,

  85. and in him all things hold together. And

  86. he is the head of the body, the church.

  87. He is the beginning, the firstborn from

  88. the dead, that in everything he might be

  89. preeminent.

  90. For in him all the fullness of God was

  91. pleased to dwell and through him to

  92. reconcile himself to himself all things,

  93. whether on earth or in heaven, making

  94. peace by the blood of his cross.

  95. And you who once were alienated and

  96. hostile in mind doing evil deeds, he has

  97. now reconciled in his body of flesh by

  98. his death. in order to present you holy

  99. and blameless and above reproach before

  100. him. If indeed you continue in the

  101. faith, stable and steadfast, not

  102. shifting from the hope of the gospel

  103. that you have heard which was which has

  104. been proclaimed in all creation under

  105. heaven and of which I Paul became a

  106. minister. Let's let's pray together.

  107. Father, we thank you.

  108. Thank you again for

  109. the celebrations and the feasts and the

  110. the enjoyment that we have come through

  111. in this past week.

  112. Father, we we don't take it for granted

  113. that we have these these times and we

  114. pray that we have made the most of the

  115. opportunity

  116. to remember our savior Jesus Christ

  117. coming to earth as a man.

  118. Father, we we see him as that infant in

  119. the in the manger, but he is so much

  120. more

  121. than a baby. He we really can't

  122. understand the incarnation

  123. unless we also understand the cross.

  124. Father, this morning as we see these as

  125. we listen to these words, as we speak

  126. about these these statements that the

  127. Apostle Paul makes, we pray that you

  128. would give us understanding that we

  129. would we would be able to see Jesus

  130. clearly,

  131. that our vision would be sharpened, our

  132. focused, our focus would be would be

  133. improved

  134. and we would see him as you reveal him

  135. to be. Help us as we do this in Jesus

  136. name. Amen.

  137. If you're taking notes this morning,

  138. we're going to look at three separate

  139. statements that Paul makes regarding

  140. Jesus Christ. The first of those is in

  141. verses 15-1 17. And that is that Jesus

  142. is the creator and sustainer of all

  143. things. And secondly, in verse 18, we'll

  144. see that Jesus is proclaimed to be the

  145. head of the church.

  146. And lastly, in verses 19- 23, we'll see

  147. that Jesus is the reconciler of sinners

  148. to God.

  149. In verses 15 and following, Paul

  150. launches into what some have described

  151. as a hymn of praise concerning Jesus

  152. Christ. He's he's began the letter with

  153. a a word of introduction. He had not

  154. been to the church in Colasse

  155. personally, uh but he knew about them.

  156. He had heard about them. people had

  157. brought reports back to him about them.

  158. And as he heard those reports, he was

  159. able to rejoice in what God was doing.

  160. And he he mentions that in verses three

  161. and following of the first chapter.

  162. And then he he offers a prayer of his

  163. hope that God would continue to work in

  164. their lives to sta stable them and

  165. steady them in the midst of difficult

  166. situations. And then he launches in in

  167. verse 15, he launches into this this

  168. hymn of praise to Jesus Christ.

  169. And some have described this. One

  170. commentator has described this paragraph

  171. that is verses 15 through 23 as as

  172. one of the the the most revealing the

  173. one of the most rich portions of

  174. scripture concerning Jesus Christ

  175. himself. He says probably no paragraph

  176. in the New Testament contains more

  177. concentrated doctrine about Jesus Christ

  178. than this one.

  179. And I was I was dumbfounded as I studied

  180. through this passage in preparation for

  181. this message that there's so much I've

  182. been learning so much that I had just

  183. taken for granted or just overlooked

  184. before.

  185. There's so much to digest here. And I'm

  186. sure that I'm not going to be able to do

  187. justice to what's here. But I hope that

  188. you'll you'll be able to see a glimpse

  189. of of what God wants us to know and to

  190. see and to learn and understand about

  191. our Savior Jesus Christ.

  192. And before Paul launches into these

  193. proclamations,

  194. he starts with a very important

  195. statement, probably one of the most

  196. important statements he'll make in this

  197. verse, in this in this book. And that is

  198. in verse 15.

  199. He says he, and that's speaking of

  200. Jesus, he is the image of the invisible

  201. God, the firstborn of all creation. What

  202. does it mean for Jesus to be the image?

  203. We we use that word in in modern

  204. language, in modern English. We we use

  205. that to to describe someone who looks

  206. like someone else. He's the he's the

  207. spitting image of his parents or of his

  208. father or of his brother or whatever. It

  209. mean it means he he looks like the

  210. person being compared to. Now, of

  211. course, Paul is very careful to to say

  212. that he is the image of the invisible

  213. God. He's not saying that God has a that

  214. we that we can see God, that God is

  215. invisible. The Apostle John, as he

  216. writes the gospel, he he speaks to the

  217. the woman at the well and says that that

  218. God is spirit and we that worship him

  219. must worship him in spirit and truth.

  220. God doesn't have a a body like you and I

  221. have. So the image that Jesus is of God

  222. is not a physical visible image.

  223. But what's in display for us in Jesus

  224. Christ is the character of God, the

  225. nature of God, the thoughts of God, the

  226. words of God. Jesus is the image of God

  227. in the sense that he is the he is the

  228. living breathing embodiment of all that

  229. God is.

  230. And that's that's how he begins this

  231. section of of the book.

  232. It's not a physical characteristic. It's

  233. but it's a it's a it's a character on

  234. display. He is he is the image of God in

  235. that sense.

  236. Other passages of scripture and we've

  237. seen some of those in our study this

  238. this over the holiday period. Uh John,

  239. the apostle John in first John in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  240. chapter 1 verse one, in the beginning

  241. was the word and the word was with God

  242. and the word was God. verse 14 of that

  243. same chapter. And the word became flesh

  244. and dwelt among us and we beheld his

  245. glory, glory as of the only begotten of

  246. the father, full of grace and truth. Uh

  247. in John 1 18, John continues to say, "No

  248. one has seen God at any time, the only

  249. God who is at the father's side. He has

  250. made him known."

  251. And so much so that Jesus himself as he

  252. speaks to his disciples just before he

  253. is taken and arrested and taken to the

  254. cross he says in chapter 14 verse 9 he

  255. says that whoever has seen me has seen

  256. the father.

  257. Jesus shows us the father. Jesus

  258. describes to us the father. Jesus

  259. manifests the father to us.

  260. That's what it means when Paul says he

  261. is the image of the invisible God. One

  262. commentator said he makes the invisible

  263. visible. What we can't see about God the

  264. Father, Jesus makes visible. He makes

  265. understandable. He displays that for us.

  266. And as as Paul continues to speak of

  267. Jesus Christ, he moves down and he's

  268. going to make four statements about

  269. Jesus. And I hope you'll be able to see

  270. these. He says in verse 15, he is the

  271. firstborn of all creation. And we need

  272. to take a moment to to understand what

  273. it means to be the firstborn in this

  274. sense.

  275. Most of the time when we use that word

  276. to to describe someone, we're talking

  277. about, well, he or she was the firstborn

  278. in the family.

  279. Uh I'm not the firstborn in my family.

  280. I'm the fourthborn in my family. uh my

  281. oldest brother George is the firstborn

  282. in our family which means he was the

  283. first of us to come. That's not the

  284. sense in which Paul uses the word here.

  285. It has the idea of the first in terms of

  286. priority, the first in terms of

  287. importance, the first in in terms of

  288. rank or place.

  289. As the firstborn, he would be the heir

  290. of all things.

  291. So Paul says that he is the firstborn of

  292. creation.

  293. He is over and above creation. He is not

  294. part of creation. He is above creation.

  295. He rules over creation.

  296. So all of the statements that Paul is

  297. going to make here have reference to

  298. Jesus in relation to creation. He is

  299. above it. He is not part of it. Unlike

  300. the the false teachers who were

  301. pestering the church in Colasse,

  302. teaching that Jesus was less than God.

  303. Paul proclaims that Jesus is above the

  304. creation. He is not a part of it. He

  305. rules over it.

  306. And not only that, but Paul goes on in

  307. verse 16 to say he created all things.

  308. Notice in verse four, verse 16, the

  309. first word is for or because

  310. Jesus is the firstborn. That is he's

  311. over all creation because he is the

  312. creator of it.

  313. Notice in verse 15, it talks about all

  314. creation. Verse 16, all things. Verse 16

  315. again, all things. Eight different times

  316. we see that phrase all things used here

  317. in this passage. They all refer to the

  318. things that Jesus has made. He can't be

  319. both creator and created which the false

  320. teachers in Colassi were proclaiming

  321. that Jesus wasn't the creator of all

  322. things. He was the first of God's

  323. creation

  324. and he therefore created all other

  325. things. But that's not what Paul is

  326. saying here. very clear. We can't walk

  327. away from this passage with any other

  328. idea than that Jesus is the creator, not

  329. the created.

  330. We We can't stumble out of here this

  331. morning falsely understanding that Jesus

  332. was somehow created and then he created

  333. everything else. Paul makes it

  334. abundantly clear to us that Jesus is the

  335. creator of all things. We've already

  336. seen that in our study this this

  337. Christmas season. In John chapter 1:3,

  338. John makes it clear there is he all

  339. things were created by him and

  340. everything that was made was made by him

  341. and nothing was made that was made apart

  342. from him.

  343. He is the creator of every single thing

  344. in the universe

  345. seen and unseen. He is the creator. Paul

  346. is very clear and we can't we can't walk

  347. away with a misunderstanding of that.

  348. And thirdly, he all things exist for him

  349. in the second part of verse 16.

  350. For by him all things were created in

  351. heaven and on earth, visible and

  352. invisible, whether rulers or thrones or

  353. dominions or rulers or authorities, all

  354. things were created through him. That

  355. is, he is the he is the agent who

  356. brought all of these things into

  357. existence. and they are for him. That is

  358. they were created for his purposes. You

  359. and I are not created for our own

  360. purposes. We are created for him

  361. to do his will to accomplish his

  362. purposes.

  363. And lastly, not only is he proclaimed as

  364. the creator of all things,

  365. but he is he is proclaimed as the

  366. sustainer of all things in verse uh 17.

  367. And he is before all things. Again, a

  368. reference to his preeminence, his

  369. importance. He is before all things. And

  370. in him all things hold together.

  371. He's the the glue that keeps everything

  372. moving and working as it should. If he

  373. were to remove his restraining,

  374. sustaining hands, there would be utter

  375. chaos. You think the You think life as

  376. we see it now is chaotic? And it can be

  377. chaotic. It has been chaotic over this

  378. past week.

  379. If he were to remove his sustaining

  380. controlling hand and just say, "Have at

  381. it."

  382. We don't want to experience that. He

  383. holds things together. And it's not just

  384. this the big things, you know, the the

  385. astrophysical

  386. things. It's the minute details of our

  387. lives. He sustains us in them. His hand

  388. is in all of that. So Paul begins this

  389. this hymn of praise to Jesus by

  390. proclaiming him to be God

  391. creator and sustainer.

  392. That is his position in the universe.

  393. That is his position over that which

  394. he's created. He is its creator and he

  395. is its sustainer.

  396. And then Paul begins to speak of Jesus

  397. in another relation. He was speaking of

  398. him in relation to the creation. But now

  399. he's going to change and speak of Jesus

  400. in his relation to the church.

  401. Verse 18.

  402. And he Christ is the head of the body,

  403. the church.

  404. He's going to say something else about

  405. Jesus. He is the beginning

  406. in um

  407. verse 18 as well.

  408. And the firstborn from the dead. There's

  409. that word again. Let's think about those

  410. three phrases. The head.

  411. The head expresses the thoughts of

  412. source or origin or leader or ruler.

  413. That Jesus as the head of the church

  414. just like he is the head of creation.

  415. Just like he is over all creation in

  416. charge of creation its ruler. He is also

  417. the ruler of the church. He is its

  418. origin. He is its beginning.

  419. It belongs to him. It's his possession.

  420. We as the local church belong to him.

  421. He is our head. He is the one who gives

  422. us direction. He is the one who leads

  423. us. He is the one who guides us. He is

  424. the one who provides and protects us.

  425. But not only that, he's the beginning.

  426. He's the He's the He's the the one who

  427. began it all.

  428. And thirdly, he's the firstborn.

  429. There's that word again. Again, he's not

  430. talking about first in order.

  431. Although being the firstborn from the

  432. dead, he is the first who has been

  433. raised to life and never to die again.

  434. Your resurrection, which is promised, my

  435. resurrection, which is promised, is tied

  436. to his resurrection.

  437. Without his resurrection, there is no

  438. resurrection. And Paul will make a case

  439. for that in 1 Corinthians chapter 15. If

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  440. Jesus hasn't been risen from the dead,

  441. then no one will be

  442. because our resurrection is tied to his.

  443. That's what it means to be the firstborn

  444. from the dead. He is the firstborn, the

  445. one who ra was raised from the dead,

  446. never to die again. And when we

  447. experience that re that resurrection, we

  448. too will live forever because of him.

  449. Why was all of that? Why does he occupy

  450. that position in the church? What is the

  451. purpose of all of that? Paul goes on to

  452. say at the end of verse uh 18 that in

  453. everything he might be preeminent.

  454. He is all of this to the church so that

  455. the church recognizes him as the the

  456. foremost,

  457. the first, the the beginning, the one

  458. who is in charge, the one who dictates,

  459. the one who rules,

  460. the one who guides, the one who protects

  461. in everything. He might be preeminent.

  462. He might have first place as one

  463. translation or he might have supremacy

  464. as another translation. The church is

  465. entirely Christ's.

  466. Its head, its beginning, its source, its

  467. origin, it's sovereign.

  468. So Jesus is the image of the invisible

  469. God. Jesus is the head of the church.

  470. And lastly, Jesus is the reconciler of

  471. sinners. Verses 19- 23. Notice again,

  472. Paul confirms his deity for us. So

  473. again, we can't walk away from this

  474. passage without knowing, without being

  475. literally hit in the face with this

  476. truth. Jesus is God. For in him, verse

  477. 19, for in him all the fullness of God

  478. was pleased to dwell.

  479. That statement serves as a prelude to

  480. what's going to come.

  481. Jesus is the God man. All the fullness

  482. of deity dwells in him. So, anything

  483. that could be said of God the Father can

  484. also be said of God the Son in terms of

  485. their their nature, their character.

  486. He is God in flesh.

  487. He is the God man. Paul's going to say

  488. that again in Colossians chapter 2:9.

  489. Notice there.

  490. For in him the whole fullness of deity

  491. dwells bodily.

  492. Again, Paul makes no mistake. He lives.

  493. He leaves no room for confusion. Jesus

  494. is God.

  495. And this truth, this statement qualifies

  496. Jesus to be the one through whom God

  497. will reconcile all things to himself.

  498. Notice in 2 Corinthians chapter 5 18.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  499. Don't turn there, but just listen as I

  500. read that portion. 1 Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  501. 5 18 to 21. All this is from God who who

  502. through Christ reconciled us to himself

  503. and gave us the ministry of

  504. reconciliation. That is in Christ God

  505. was reconciling the world to himself,

  506. not counting their trespasses against

  507. them and entrusting to us the message of

  508. reconciliation. Therefore, we are

  509. ambassadors for Christ. God making his

  510. appeal through us. We implore you on

  511. behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

  512. for God's sake for for our sake he that

  513. is God made him Jesus to be who knew no

  514. sin to be sin for us

  515. so that in him we might become the

  516. righteousness of God the fullness all

  517. the fullness of God was pleased to dwell

  518. in Jesus Christ FF Bruce says this

  519. describes that word as the totality of

  520. divine essence and power is resident in

  521. Christ he is the one allsufficient

  522. intermediary between God and the whole

  523. and the world of humanity and all the

  524. attributes of God, his spirit, his word,

  525. his wisdom, his glory are disclosed in

  526. him.

  527. All that is in all that God is,

  528. Christ is

  529. in that sense.

  530. And then Paul goes on to describe that

  531. work, that work of reconciliation in

  532. verses 20 and following. and through him

  533. to reconcile to himself all things. This

  534. this work was necessary because of sin.

  535. He noted he mentions that in verse 21.

  536. And you who once were alienated and

  537. hostile in mind doing evil deeds. The

  538. reason Jesus came as the reconciler is

  539. because of our sin. Our sin demanded

  540. payment.

  541. And the payment for sin, as Paul says in

  542. Romans 3, is death. For the wages of sin

  543. is death. The gift of God rather is

  544. eternal life through Jesus Christ our

  545. Lord.

  546. The reason why Jesus comes as the

  547. reconciler is because there are people

  548. who need to be reconciled. And we need

  549. to be reconciled because of our sin.

  550. And that that that reconciliation

  551. required a death. It required a payment.

  552. Notice in verse 20, by the blood of his

  553. cross in verse 22, in his in his body of

  554. flesh by death. Jesus Christ paid that

  555. penalty for us.

  556. The problem of sin must first be removed

  557. before reconciliation can take place

  558. before that hostility between ourselves

  559. and God can be removed. And until that

  560. happens, we are at war with him.

  561. We are fighting against him. Until we

  562. are reconciled, until that takes place,

  563. we are in open warfare with God. But

  564. once the death has been made, once Jesus

  565. Christ died for our sins, taking upon

  566. himself the weight and the penalty of

  567. all that we have done, past, present,

  568. and future,

  569. God is satisfied in that sacrifice

  570. because Jesus was the perfect sacrifice

  571. fully paying the penalty. Imagine that.

  572. And it's not just me personally. It's

  573. all of us. All of our sin

  574. in the past, in the present, in the

  575. future. All of it has been paid for in

  576. that one sacrifice,

  577. in that one substitution for us.

  578. I don't know about you, but that makes

  579. me stop and and and thank be thankful. I

  580. don't do that enough.

  581. And the result of that reconciliation is

  582. peace.

  583. I am no longer at war.

  584. The hostility has been removed.

  585. And God graciously

  586. through his son welcomes me

  587. not as his enemy but as his child.

  588. What a wonderful truth.

  589. What a wonderful thing to think about

  590. this morning.

  591. And the reason why Jesus reconciles us

  592. is stated in the end of verse 22

  593. in order to present you holy and

  594. blameless and above reproach in him.

  595. Jesus Christ as the image of the

  596. invisible God is creating the image of

  597. God in us

  598. through the process of sanctification.

  599. So that one day when we stand face to

  600. face with the savior who redeemed us,

  601. we will be like him.

  602. He will make us like him.

  603. We struggle and we strain and we fight

  604. against sin now and we often fail.

  605. There's coming a time. Well, that will

  606. no longer be the case

  607. where sin will be no more.

  608. Where the struggle for holiness will

  609. will be removed and we will have been

  610. made complete in him.

  611. I'm looking forward to that day.

  612. And just so that Paul makes sure that we

  613. understand, he goes on in verse 23

  614. to talk about the reality of that work.

  615. What what is what what is the

  616. implication of that reconciling work?

  617. Verse 23 says, "If indeed you continue

  618. in the faith stable and steadfast, not

  619. shifting from the hope of the gospel

  620. that you have heard which has been

  621. proclaimed in all under in all creation

  622. under heaven and of which I Paul became

  623. a minister." There's no there's no note

  624. of of uncertainty with Paul. He's not

  625. saying if you continue and I'm not

  626. really sure whether you will.

  627. Now the construction of the sentence

  628. there is if you continue and you do or

  629. you will because that's what Christ does

  630. in the life of someone who trusts him.

  631. He not only saves them and then in the

  632. sense of paying the penalty for their

  633. sin but he works in them to keep us

  634. to help us as we move along our journey.

  635. We're not left to figure things out for

  636. ourselves. We're not left to to fight as

  637. best we can and do the best we can. He

  638. is with us. He is walking with us. And

  639. Paul

  640. brings that home to the the believers

  641. here in Colasse. If indeed you continue

  642. and you will because Christ will make it

  643. so.

  644. Doesn't mean that we will be perfect. It

  645. doesn't mean that we won't fall. It

  646. doesn't mean that we won't struggle. It

  647. doesn't mean that we won't strive. It

  648. doesn't mean we won't fail.

  649. But ultimately he will bring us through.

  650. We we we listened as we heard from Shane

  651. and others in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  652. Nothing can separate not even ourselves.

  653. Nothing can separate us from the love of

  654. God in Christ Jesus.

  655. And all that Christ all that God has

  656. promised us will be fulfilled because of

  657. Jesus.

  658. Where does that leave us?

  659. As we try to I'm going to ask you to try

  660. and remember what you've heard prior to

  661. today.

  662. But as we we we come to the end of this

  663. series

  664. about the incarnate Christ,

  665. where does that leave us? How how I'm

  666. going to ask you a couple of questions.

  667. How big is our Jesus?

  668. How high is our view of Jesus? How

  669. exalted is our theology of Jesus?

  670. Paul was writing to the church here in

  671. Colasse. They were they were being

  672. hassled

  673. by false teaching.

  674. It later became known as Gnosticism.

  675. It may not have been a full-blown system

  676. at this point in history, but it became

  677. some such. But parts of the parts of the

  678. teaching that they were being pestered

  679. with was was a a downgrading of Jesus

  680. from the place of creator to creature.

  681. The false teachers that were pastoring

  682. this church were teaching that Jesus was

  683. not the creator of all things. He was a

  684. created being and then he went on to

  685. create all other things.

  686. That lie is still with us today.

  687. There was also the the the teaching also

  688. included the idea or the denial of

  689. Jesus's full humanity, his real humanity

  690. and his full deity.

  691. Not only was he a created being, but he

  692. was not a divine being.

  693. And he wasn't really fully human either.

  694. And this teaching also downplayed his

  695. his work of redeemer, his work of

  696. salvation.

  697. And so Paul speaks all of these truths

  698. in the midst of falsehoods that were

  699. being that were swirling around the

  700. Colossian believers.

  701. You know, those those issues really

  702. haven't changed very much in couple

  703. thousand years.

  704. Those those things are still with us.

  705. There are multitude of teaching

  706. teachings regarding Jesus Christ which

  707. are circulated in our world both

  708. organizationally and personally. We we

  709. talk to people. We we we get leaflets in

  710. the door about various organizations and

  711. all of them minimize Jesus.

  712. They take the biblical Jesus and they

  713. strip things away from him. So that is

  714. no longer unique. He's no longer one of

  715. a kind. He's no longer savior. He's just

  716. a good person,

  717. a great moral teacher,

  718. a wonderful individual.

  719. It shrinks Jesus down to a comfortable

  720. size

  721. so that we can handle him, so we can

  722. manage him.

  723. It demotes Jesus from his rightful place

  724. of supremacy in the church.

  725. It may recognize him but it does not

  726. exalt him.

  727. That teaching is still with us today in

  728. various forms. And Paul is very clear.

  729. Those things are false.

  730. Jesus is God. Jesus is creator not

  731. creature. Jesus is redeemer.

  732. And he makes sure that we understand

  733. that Jesus is the only

  734. creator and sustainer. Jesus is the only

  735. head of the church. Jesus is the only

  736. reconciler of sinners.

  737. So I ask that question again. How big is

  738. our God? How big is our Jesus?

  739. How high is our view of him? How exalted

  740. is our theology of him?

  741. If our view of Jesus is anything less

  742. than those things,

  743. then he's too small.

  744. He's not able to save us

  745. and we will never live stable lives.

  746. That's not the Jesus of Christmas.

  747. Jesus is all that the Bible proclaims

  748. him to be. That infant in the manger

  749. is God. And I know it doesn't look like

  750. it as we have him in our nativity

  751. scenes,

  752. but he is God. Before

  753. he was born into human existence, he was

  754. God. He continued to be God on earth as

  755. the God man. And he is God now. The

  756. resurrected son of God.

  757. Jesus is the savior, the sovereign,

  758. the sufficient

  759. sustainer.

  760. He is the God that we worship. He is the

  761. God of Christmas.

  762. And I trust that our Christmas

  763. celebrations have included him

  764. not as a part of our celebrations but as

  765. the celebration.

  766. Let's pray.

  767. Father, we thank you for

  768. time

  769. this morning to pause

  770. and to seek to understand

  771. these these truths

  772. to take time away from our our busy

  773. schedules and to remember him.

  774. Thank you Lord for your love for us.

  775. Thank you for giving to us

  776. an indescribable gift.

  777. Jesus is that gift.

  778. Lord, may we celebrate him

  779. as we gather together. We pray in Jesus

  780. name. Amen.
