  1. You can turn in your Bibles to

  2. Colossians chapter 1. That's where we're

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  3. going to spend most of our time this

  4. morning. Colossians chapter 1. I love

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  5. singing that song right before we hear

  6. God's word because we want God to speak

  7. to us. Uh and he speaks to us through

  8. his word. I wonder this morning uh if

  9. you could think with me with what it is

  10. that you are most practiced at. Uh and

  11. so um some of you might be really good

  12. at guitar and so you've practiced a lot

  13. of guitar. Some of you might be really

  14. good at soccer uh football. If you uh

  15. maybe you've practiced that or maybe you

  16. think that you're really good at it. Uh

  17. some of you might have some hidden

  18. talents that we don't know of. Um maybe

  19. a bit of dancing here and there or

  20. yodelling perhaps. Anyone really

  21. practiced at yodelling? You can show us

  22. later. Um well, I read a book years ago

  23. called Outliers, uh the story of success

  24. by a guy named Malcolm Gladwell. And

  25. he's talking about these people that

  26. have uh like a super high amount of

  27. success in the world. And often we think

  28. that it's because of just they were just

  29. born that way. Um but he goes on to show

  30. through research that there's actually

  31. various factors that allow people to

  32. kind of get the highest in their field.

  33. Sometimes it is certain circumstances in

  34. their lives that just uh help that along

  35. the way. Um, in in Canada, uh, it's it

  36. one of the ones was when you were born,

  37. uh, determines how actually, uh,

  38. successful you might be in hockey

  39. because, uh, of the certain place that

  40. you are, uh, in the leagues. Uh, but he

  41. also talks about the 10,000 hour rule.

  42. uh and he basically is arguing that

  43. people that are really good at what they

  44. do, a lot of those people are because

  45. they've just practiced for a really

  46. really long time. And if you practice

  47. anything for 10,000 hours, you're likely

  48. to be pretty good at it. In fact, if you

  49. were to practice guitar for an hour a

  50. day, so just an hour a day of guitar,

  51. and you did that for 10,000

  52. hours,

  53. that would be about 27 years of

  54. practicing guitar, one hour a day. And I

  55. would hope that you'd be pretty good at

  56. guitar at that point after 27 years of

  57. practicing one hour a day. Uh, and you

  58. would really grow in it. And there would

  59. be this real sense that as time goes on,

  60. you grew in your knowledge and skill in

  61. that instrument. And so when we look

  62. into the scriptures, we see that we are

  63. commanded to grow in godliness.

  64. We are commanded to grow in our

  65. knowledge, to grow in grace. In fact,

  66. Ephesians 4 says, "We are to grow up in

  67. every way into him who is the head

  68. into Christ."

  69. Second Peter says, "But grow in the

  70. grace and knowledge of our Lord and

  71. Savior Jesus Christ." We are to grow in

  72. these things. Now, do we simply do that

  73. with 10,000 hours of practice? Well, I'd

  74. say no. We don't grow with just

  75. practicing godliness. We are like

  76. sailboats. Uh a sailboat, you can sit a

  77. sailboat in the water. You can do all

  78. the right things on the sailboat. It

  79. will go nowhere if you don't have wind.

  80. And so we need the power of grace in our

  81. lives. Grace is like the wind that

  82. drives the sailboat along. And so we

  83. grow by the power of grace. Grace is the

  84. wind in our sails.

  85. There's a lot of things that we are told

  86. to do in the Bible.

  87. These are commands and they don't save

  88. us. They don't they don't make us get to

  89. heaven. That is by faith in the Lord

  90. Jesus Christ. And yet and yet there are

  91. particular things that we are commanded

  92. to do that help us grow in godliness.

  93. It's the means by which we grow.

  94. Theologians call them ordinary means of

  95. grace. We we've talked about them before

  96. and they're repetitive for a reason. We

  97. we do these things over and over and

  98. over again. And this this cyclical form

  99. leads to a linear growth in our life.

  100. What we do matters. How often we do it

  101. matters. how we do what we do, it

  102. matters. So you see that 10,000 hour

  103. rule does connect. It does connect. I'm

  104. commanded to pray. I'm commanded to

  105. pray. And so the more I pray, the better

  106. I get at it.

  107. The more these prayers then shape my

  108. thinking and my faith. And the more like

  109. Jesus I become by the power of grace

  110. through the means of prayer.

  111. So there's means of grace in our lives.

  112. And so church, if you haven't noticed,

  113. is repetitive. We come and we do the

  114. same things every week over and over and

  115. over again.

  116. And sometimes we might have this thought

  117. like, man, that's just really boring.

  118. It's just boring. But I would say if

  119. it's feels boring, we are the problem.

  120. It isn't the practices that are the

  121. problem. Church is not boring. We're

  122. just broken.

  123. We're just broken. And so, as you've

  124. already heard, we're starting this new

  125. series kind of like why we do what we

  126. do. The practices of the church. These

  127. sermons will be a little different than

  128. our kind of normal pattern, our normal

  129. diet of going through a section of

  130. scripture, a verse at a time. These will

  131. be topical.

  132. These are these are practices that you

  133. are very well familiar with, but that

  134. have been practiced in the church uh for

  135. centuries that church history affirms.

  136. Uh sometimes they might feel a little

  137. more teachy. These sermons might feel a

  138. little more teachy than preachy just

  139. because we're we're kind of establishing

  140. what we do and why uh we do it.

  141. Questions like, "Have you ever wondered

  142. why the sermon is so long?" Like, yes,

  143. I'm wondering why the sermon is so long

  144. even right now. Maybe why we sing the

  145. songs we sing like why don't we just

  146. sing like every song that comes on

  147. Spirit FM or why are members expected to

  148. serve in the church? Why do we why do we

  149. limit who takes the Lord's supper? Why

  150. do we have a pastoral prayer? So, some

  151. of these things and more hopefully will

  152. be answered along the way in these next

  153. seven Sundays. But this morning, we're

  154. going to focus, we're going to zero in

  155. on PBC's practice of preaching. Why

  156. preaching?

  157. Why is this the center of our Sunday

  158. morning together? We're going to look at

  159. the who, the what, the when, the why,

  160. the how, and then I'm going to end with

  161. a bunch of applications for us. So, a

  162. load of things that we can do knowing

  163. how important preaching is. So, let me

  164. pray for us one more time. Father, we

  165. thank you that you have revealed

  166. yourself in your word and that you have

  167. given us the things that we need to do

  168. to know you more. That that's not

  169. something that we're blind to. And so,

  170. as we look into the scriptures over

  171. these next few weeks and to why we do

  172. the things we do, show us, Father, show

  173. us yourself. Show us Christ in these

  174. things. Show us how these are means of

  175. grace in our lives to know you more. We

  176. need your help. We need your help even

  177. this morning. We pray in Jesus name.

  178. Amen.

  179. So before we think about preaching, we

  180. need to think about the fact that God

  181. reveals himself. And God has primarily

  182. revealed himself in two main ways. We we

  183. think of general revelation as one of

  184. the ways that he has revealed himself.

  185. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  186. You look outside. You go outside and you

  187. look at anything created or look inside.

  188. Look at yourselves and we see the

  189. scripture tells us invisible attributes

  190. of God and the things that were made. We

  191. see the invisible in the visible. That's

  192. general revelation. It's just out there.

  193. It screams to us. I know the world will

  194. twist that and say, "No, no, this was

  195. just random accident." No, it screams

  196. creator. That's general revelation.

  197. But God also has revealed himself to us

  198. in a special way,

  199. special revelation,

  200. primarily in the person of the Lord

  201. Jesus Christ. He came onto this planet

  202. and lived a perfect life and died the

  203. death that we deserve to rescue us from

  204. our sin. That's a special revelation

  205. from God. And then

  206. we had the word become flesh and we have

  207. the written word of God. This is a

  208. special revelation from God. It shows us

  209. who he is. It shows us all about him and

  210. it's glorious. And this is how we know

  211. God. We wouldn't know God fully from

  212. general revelation. We need special

  213. revelation to know him fully.

  214. Hebrews 1 says God speaks through his

  215. son

  216. Jesus Christ. That was something that

  217. was preached to us a few weeks ago. 2

    2 Timothy 3:16

  218. Timothy 3:16 says, "All scripture is

  219. breathed out by God and is profitable

  220. for teaching, for reproof, for

  221. correction, and for training in

  222. righteousness." So, if you want to know

  223. God, you need to read his word. I mean,

  224. that's the only way to know him fully is

  225. you must read his word. Psalm 119, I

  226. have stored up your word in my heart

  227. that I might not sin against you. So, we

  228. personally should be in the scriptures

  229. knowing God. But we are also called to

  230. hear and obey the preached word of God.

  231. Romans 10,

  232. how then will they call on him in whom

  233. they have not believed? And how then are

  234. they to believe in him and whom they

  235. have never heard? And how are they to

  236. hear without someone preaching?

  237. 1 Corinthians 1 says, "For since in the

  238. wisdom of God, the world did not know

  239. God through wisdom, it pleased God

  240. through the folly of what we preach to

  241. save those who believe."

  242. In second Timothy, Paul tells to

  243. Timothy, he writes to Timothy, he says,

  244. "Preach the word." We are called to

  245. listen to the preached word. And so when

  246. we look at this text in Colossians that

  247. you should be in in chapter 1, it this

  248. section that I'm going to read is is

  249. about Paul's ministry to the church as a

  250. preacher.

  251. He is a preacher. He's an apostle, yes,

  252. but he preaches all the time.

  253. And we saw even earlier or last month in

  254. Colossians that Christ is preeminent. uh

  255. that was part of our Christmas series.

  256. He is the image of the invisible God.

  257. And so Paul explains his work as a

  258. minister right after that. Like this is

  259. who Christ is and this is what I'm

  260. proclaiming. Look at verse 24 of chapter

  261. 1 of Colossians. Now I rejoice in my

  262. sufferings for your sake and in my flesh

  263. I am filling up what is lacking in

  264. Christ's afflictions for the sake of his

  265. body. that is the church of which I

  266. became a minister according to the

  267. stewardship from God that was given to

  268. me for you to make the word of God fully

  269. known. The mystery hidden for ages and

  270. generations but now revealed to his

  271. saints. To them God chose to make known

  272. how great among the Gentiles are the

  273. riches of the glory of this mystery

  274. which is Christ in you. the hope of

  275. glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone

  276. and teaching everyone with all wisdom

  277. that we may present everyone mature in

  278. Christ. For this I toil, struggling with

  279. all his energy that he powerfully works

  280. within me. And so Paul is describing

  281. himself as a minister uh the image of

  282. the invisible God made peace through the

  283. blood of his cross. Paul's preaching

  284. that verse 28 him he proclaims he's

  285. preaching that and this this sec this

  286. this first verse there filling up what

  287. is lacking in the sufferings of Christ

  288. that can be a little confusing when you

  289. first read it. I want to be really clear

  290. that has nothing to do with the fact

  291. that somehow Christ's sacrifice wasn't

  292. sufficient. Paul's not making Christ

  293. sacrifice sufficient. We know that from

  294. the rest of the teachings of scripture.

  295. That is not what he's saying. In no way

  296. does it indicate that it shows when Paul

  297. says, "I rejoice in my sufferings for

  298. your sake and in my flesh I am filling

  299. up what is lacking in Christ's

  300. afflictions for the sake of his body,

  301. the church." He's saying that as a body

  302. of Christ, we suffer like Christ

  303. suffered. And as a minister of the

  304. gospel, he's suffering for the church

  305. just like Christ suffered for the

  306. church. So what's lacking is all the

  307. suffering through the ages that the

  308. church has endured and that ministers of

  309. the gospel have endured.

  310. It's not that Christ's sacrifice wasn't

  311. sufficient. It's that being a Christian

  312. is a life of suffering because this

  313. world is against the gospel. So Paul as

  314. a minister, as a preacher is showing

  315. that these sufferings are to be

  316. expected.

  317. But they reveal how close we are to

  318. Jesus. We're his body. He's the head.

  319. We're that close. Do you remember in

  320. Acts nine when when when Paul is saved,

  321. when Christ comes to him and he says he

  322. says, "Paul, Paul, why are you

  323. persecuting me?"

  324. Christ's in heaven. How is Paul

  325. persecuting Christ? Because he was

  326. persecuting his people.

  327. So, that's what he means when he says

  328. he's lacking or or filling up what's

  329. lacking in Christ's suffering. And so

  330. the first question is who is preaching

  331. for? Let's think about the who of

  332. preaching. And I start there because you

  333. might think, well, shouldn't you start

  334. with what is preaching? Well, the text

  335. starts with who it's for.

  336. Verse 24. It's for the sake of his body,

  337. that is the church,

  338. of which I became a minister according

  339. to the stewardship from God that was

  340. given to me for you to make the word of

  341. God fully known. Paul's linking his

  342. suffering and his preaching as good for

  343. the church. Preaching is for the the

  344. church. It's the gathered together

  345. in-person community of God's people. We

  346. gather together to experience God

  347. through his word. Do you remember Ryan

  348. Fullerton? He came to us in March. He

  349. was preaching at our day away. He wrote

  350. a book on preaching. Uh and this is his

  351. definition of preaching. He says,

  352. "Preaching occurs when a holy man of God

  353. opens the word of God and says to the

  354. people of God, come experience God with

  355. me." In this text,

  356. preaching occurs when a holy man of God

  357. opens the word of God and says to the

  358. people of God, "Come experience God with

  359. me in this text."

  360. Preaching is for the people of God.

  361. Well, who does the preaching? Well,

  362. verse 25

  363. says, "Of which I became a minister

  364. according to the stewardship from God."

  365. It's done by men appointed by God.

  366. God appoints his people to preach

  367. through his church, through the people

  368. of God.

  369. Holy men.

  370. You're like, "Holy?" Well, you have a

  371. high view of yourself, Steve. You're up

  372. there preaching. Are you holier than

  373. thou? Just the idea that it's people who

  374. are set apart.

  375. Not because we're special, but there is

  376. a sense in scripture

  377. from 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 2 when Paul

  378. lays out the qualifications of an elder,

  379. those qualifications are all character

  380. with the exception of able to teach. And

  381. so, who is preaching? It's men of

  382. character.

  383. that are held accountable by you.

  384. And so someone who does not have

  385. character should not be preaching.

  386. And the scripture says that clearly. And

  387. so that's what that definition means

  388. when it says the holy men. Someone who's

  389. set apart, someone whose character

  390. hopefully is seen, not perfect.

  391. Ask my family, they will tell you that I

  392. am not perfect.

  393. Ask Shane's family. They will tell you

  394. that he is not perfect.

  395. That's not what that definition is

  396. saying. It's just saying that men set

  397. apart for a task to preach.

  398. Who is preaching for? The church. Who

  399. does the preaching? Men set apart by

  400. God.

  401. What is preaching? What is preaching?

  402. What are we doing? Verse 25, that the

  403. second half of it, making the word of

  404. God fully known.

  405. Preaching occurs when a holy man of God

  406. opens the word of God and says to the

  407. people of God, "Come and experience God

  408. with me in this text." Making God fully

  409. known. That's what preaching is.

  410. What do we preach? We preach the Bible.

  411. Preaching is making God known. How do

  412. you make God known? By preaching this

  413. book. It is inherent. It is infallible.

  414. It is the authoritative word of God.

  415. Every word inspired by God. It is

  416. powerful. The word of God is powerful.

  417. Genesis 1, we saw the word of God speak

  418. everything that you have ever seen into

  419. existence

  420. by the word of his power.

  421. That spoken word of God is no more

  422. powerful than the written word of God.

  423. Hebrews 4 says, "For the word of God is

  424. living and active, sharper than any

  425. two-edged sword, piercing to the

  426. division of soul and of spirit, of

  427. joints and of marorrow, and discerning

  428. the thoughts and intentions of the

  429. heart."

  430. What do we preach? We preach the Bible.

  431. Verse 28, what else do we preach? But

  432. Paul says him Jesus we proclaim

  433. him Jesus we herald we cry out the name

  434. of Jesus.

  435. He's the whole purpose of preaching to

  436. make him known to proclaim him. We are

  437. not preaching rules.

  438. We are preaching a person. We're

  439. preaching the good news of the gospel

  440. that Christ was crucified for you. If

  441. that's not you this morning, if you

  442. haven't believed that, that's what this

  443. book is about. That's why we gather.

  444. We preach Christ crucified. It's not

  445. what the world expects to hear. The

  446. world wants to have things that tickle

  447. their ears

  448. because the gospel is offensive. The

  449. gospel is offensive because it says

  450. you're a sinner and you need help. I'm a

  451. sinner and I need help. That's why it's

  452. offensive.

  453. the world's offended by. It's not what

  454. you'd expect to hear and it's

  455. mysterious. Verse 26, there's a there's

  456. a mystery in it. It's not a mystery like

  457. like a confusing I have to guess. It's

  458. something that was hidden in the past

  459. and then all through time God has

  460. revealed it in the person of Jesus.

  461. And what has he revealed? Christ in you.

  462. The hope of glory.

  463. That's what he has revealed. And that is

  464. what we preach. Does that mean that we

  465. never preach law or commands? No.

  466. Of course we preach law and commands.

  467. The law is beautiful. It is a reflection

  468. of the holiness of God. That's what Abby

  469. read this morning. The law of the Lord

  470. is perfect. Reviving the soul.

  471. Every single bit of it. Every jot and

  472. tit as Jesus said about the Hebrew

  473. language. All of it. None of it will

  474. pass away. It's beautiful.

  475. And we preach an exclusive message. It's

  476. an exclusive message because Jesus says

  477. it is.

  478. John 4, Jesus says, "I am the way, the

  479. truth, and the life. No one comes to the

  480. father except through me." This is what

  481. we preach unashamedly.

  482. What does preaching accomplish?

  483. What does it accomplish? What

  484. accomplishes salvation? In Romans 10

  485. says, "So faith comes by hearing and

  486. hearing through the word of Christ."

  487. It doesn't just accomplish salvation,

  488. though. It accomplishes transformation.

  489. Jesus himself said in John 17, "Sanctify

  490. them in the truth. Your word is truth."

  491. Sanctify them. Set them apart. Transform

  492. them. Do you want to be transformed? You

  493. sit under the teaching of the word of

  494. God.

  495. Just like the nothingness that wasn't

  496. even a universe was transformed into

  497. this amazing thing that we see when you

  498. look out into the sky at night or you

  499. look into the forest or you look at one

  500. another.

  501. Nothing transformed into something.

  502. That's what the word of God does for us.

  503. It takes our heart and it continually

  504. transforms us

  505. so that we look like Jesus.

  506. There's nothing more beautiful to look

  507. like than the Lord Jesus. It's also one

  508. of the benefits of having the kids in

  509. our service with us. I know it's hard

  510. sometimes. We know it's hard sometimes,

  511. but it is powerful. The word of God is

  512. powerful. And it it in its purpose, it

  513. will never ever return empty.

  514. Never. So having our kids in is it's not

  515. a second best. It's not like things are

  516. going over their heads. The the word

  517. preached brings salvation and

  518. transformation. And don't we want that

  519. for our children?

  520. I want that for my children.

  521. What about the why of preaching? Well,

  522. look at verse 28.

  523. him we proclaim,

  524. warning everyone and teaching everyone

  525. with all wisdom that we may present

  526. everyone mature in Christ.

  527. Why is this the priority? Why is the the

  528. whole service on a Sunday centered

  529. around these minutes? Why do the songs

  530. hopefully bring us to this moment?

  531. It's God ordained. It's his ordained way

  532. to

  533. allow humanity to be saved, transformed,

  534. and matured.

  535. Why is it central? It's the it's it's a

  536. primary means of disciplehip in your

  537. life. Is one of the pri one of the

  538. primary ways

  539. that you become more like Jesus. Think

  540. of the millions of hours preached

  541. through the centuries across this world.

  542. Millions of hours preached.

  543. If the word of God has power,

  544. proclaiming it changes lives.

  545. Why do we preach?

  546. To present the church mature in Christ.

  547. To present you mature in Christ.

  548. To present me mature in Christ.

  549. We want to be mature. Growing up, uh, we

  550. we had a church building and at the and

  551. at the front of the building

  552. way up high, it just had the words that

  553. I may know him. It was Paul writing in

  554. Philippians 3, that I may know him. To

  555. know God is to be mature.

  556. That's what makes a mature Christian is

  557. knowing God.

  558. Ultimately, therefore,

  559. why do we preach? Because God is worthy

  560. to be known.

  561. God is worthy to be proclaimed. There

  562. isn't anything worth more

  563. than proclaiming God.

  564. What is worth more than God? What is

  565. greater than God? What is more beautiful

  566. than the triune God of the universe?

  567. Nothing. the greatness of the father,

  568. the sacrifice of the son, the

  569. transforming power of the holy spirit.

  570. Why do we proclaim? Why wouldn't we

  571. proclaim?

  572. Why wouldn't we stand up here and do

  573. this? Why wouldn't we spend our time

  574. hearing

  575. of the great God who has created and

  576. rescued us?

  577. Why would we not do that?

  578. What about the when of preaching?

  579. We'll divert from Colossians for a

  580. second. 2 Timothy 4,

  581. Paul writes to Paul and he says, "You

  582. preach in season and you preach out of

  583. season." That's 2 Timothy 4:2.

    2 Timothy 4:2

  584. Why do you do that? Because people will

  585. not always endure sound doctrine. You

  586. preach when it's convenient and when

  587. it's inconvenient.

  588. You preach when the world is saying

  589. you're an idiot

  590. or when people are happy to hear what

  591. you have to say.

  592. Church, we always we always want to be a

  593. church that endures sound doctrine,

  594. don't we? We want to be a church that

  595. endures sound doctrine,

  596. even when it's hard. Because some

  597. doctrines are hard. They're hard to

  598. swallow. is that might be hard to

  599. sometimes understand. That might be hard

  600. to live out. That might be hard to obey.

  601. But we want to be a church that endures

  602. that.

  603. And so we will preach even when it's

  604. inconvenient

  605. and even when it's frustrating. We

  606. preach when the church gathers. The

  607. church is called to gather in Hebrews

  608. 10. We see the church gathered uh in in

  609. in in Acts all the time.

  610. And when they gather, the word is

  611. preached. It's modeled for us. I I love

  612. in in in chapter 20, Paul Paul was uh he

  613. was leaving the next day. And so he he

  614. was preaching late into the night and

  615. the people were just gathered and they

  616. just were so hungry. And then you have

  617. poor Udicus who was sitting a window and

  618. he falls asleep and he falls to his

  619. death. He was dying for more preaching.

  620. Literally dying for more preaching. Paul

  621. goes and raises him from the dead.

  622. May we be a church that's dying from

  623. more preaching where it isn't laborious

  624. to somehow sit here and be like, "Oh,

  625. where's my watch? When like when is it

  626. going to be done?"

  627. May we just be hungry for it.

  628. What about the how of preaching? Look at

  629. verse Well, I'll get there in a second.

  630. How should the Bible be preached? We

  631. believe the Bible should be preached

  632. expositionally. That's a fancy word for

  633. basically verse by verse, chapter by

  634. chapter, book by book, the whole council

  635. of God's word.

  636. Expositionally means like to draw out

  637. the meaning of the text. Preaching

  638. occurs when a holy man of God opens the

  639. word of God and says to the people of

  640. God, "Come experience God with me in

  641. this text."

  642. We believe in the verbal plenary

  643. inspiration of the word of God. I don't

  644. know if you've heard that phrase before.

  645. Verbal just means words. Plenary means

  646. complete. So that every word in the

  647. scripture was inspired by God. One p one

  648. portion of scripture is not more

  649. inspired than another. You might have a

  650. Bible that has like those red letters,

  651. you know, in the Gospels where Jesus was

  652. speaking. That's nothing wrong with

  653. that. But those red letters are not more

  654. inspired than the rest of the book.

  655. Every word matters.

  656. The ladies were were just led uh in a

  657. way to think about studying the

  658. scriptures looking at all the words. We

  659. look at words. You see this happen on on

  660. Friday night when we study. You see this

  661. here when we look at different words

  662. because the words matter and that is

  663. hard work.

  664. So preaching that way is hard work. It

  665. takes study. It's a labor of love.

  666. So what's happening today is that we

  667. we're looking at 1 Corinthians 24 1:24

  668. to 29. We're drawing out the aspects of

  669. preaching in there. We were looking at

  670. Romans 8 at the end of last year. We

  671. looked at Acts the previous year. And on

  672. Friday nights, we we're looking at uh at

  673. 2 Samuel right now. We've gone through

  674. it chapter by chapter. The the the the

  675. youth are looking we looked at Hebrews

  676. last term. Chapter by chapter the the

  677. whole council of God's word.

  678. How else do we preach? We'll look at

  679. verse 29.

  680. Paul says, "For I for this I toil

  681. struggling with all his energy that he

  682. powerfully works within me." How do we

  683. do it with the power of Christ?

  684. for if if people aren't preaching with

  685. the power of Christ, who who cares.

  686. My words mean nothing without the power

  687. of Christ behind them. How do we do it?

  688. We do it with imperfect men. Like I

  689. already said, men who make mistakes,

  690. sometimes we'll get the illustration

  691. wrong and it won't hit.

  692. Sometimes we will be unclear.

  693. Sometimes we'll say something uh that

  694. felt insensitive. May I may have done

  695. that today. We're imperfect.

  696. But that's not an excuse for us not to

  697. try hard and to study well. But it's

  698. just the reality. And that's the grace

  699. of God that he uses imperfect people to

  700. proclaim himself.

  701. And that's true for all of you as you

  702. proclaim Jesus to your friends and your

  703. family and your co-workers. How else do

  704. we proclaim the go word of God? How else

  705. do we preach? We herald it. It is

  706. something to be proclaimed, announced.

  707. It's like a town crier. Hear ye. Hear

  708. ye. The king has something to say.

  709. Let's hear it. It should be preached

  710. with joy and anticipation and excitement

  711. and conviction,

  712. but also with purpose and organized. It

  713. should be clear.

  714. It should not be dull or lifeless. That

  715. should not be preaching. It's the word

  716. of God.

  717. should be something that builds

  718. excitement in us.

  719. How else do we preach? Verse 28,

  720. warning everyone and teaching everyone

  721. with all wisdom.

  722. Warning.

  723. Sometimes there's warnings. They're hard

  724. things to hear. Teaching is so much of

  725. the scripture that we I mean, you just

  726. never would have enough of it. It's

  727. living and active. You can always learn

  728. more with wisdom. Wisdom is like applied

  729. knowledge. So there should be

  730. application to the preaching. There

  731. should be something that you take away

  732. with where I need to respond in this

  733. way.

  734. Sometimes the spirit of God does that to

  735. you individually, but the preacher

  736. should also be doing it.

  737. Should be helping you with application.

  738. How do we apply this? How should you

  739. respond? How should I respond to the

  740. preached word? I should respond

  741. expectantly that God is working in my

  742. heart, transforming. I should respond

  743. obediently. I should obey what I'm told

  744. from the scripture and I should do that

  745. joyfully.

  746. It should be a joy.

  747. So, we've looked briefly at the who,

  748. what, when, why, how of preaching. I'm

  749. just going to give you a load of

  750. applications now. How do we take all

  751. that and live

  752. with it. Well, first preaching is

  753. worship. Sometimes we come together and

  754. we call this bit of the service the

  755. worship. It's the whole service. The

  756. whole service is worship. When we are

  757. worshiping God, we're doing it through

  758. song. We're doing it through prayer. And

  759. we are doing it right now as we hear his

  760. word proclaimed,

  761. the glories of Christ declared. That is

  762. worship. So we should come prepared. We

  763. should get enough sleep the night

  764. before. We should do our best to remain

  765. focused during the sermon.

  766. Secondly, I've already said this, it's a

  767. primary means of disciplehip in your

  768. life. So if the preached word on Sunday

  769. is that, if it's one of the if it if

  770. it's a primary, not secondary, not

  771. tertiary, but primary means of

  772. disciplehip in your life, we should be

  773. here. We should be present. We should be

  774. excited to come because watching a

  775. sermon on YouTube is not the same thing.

  776. It's not that it's not valuable and that

  777. you can't learn something from a sermon

  778. that's pre-recorded,

  779. but being present with the people of God

  780. to experience God together in the text

  781. is not the same as YouTube. So, we want

  782. to be present and we want to respond to

  783. the teaching. James says, "If anyone is

  784. a hearer of the word and not a doer, he

  785. is like someone looking at his own face

  786. in a mirror. for he looks at himself,

  787. goes away, and immediately forgets what

  788. kind of person he was. We don't want to

  789. be that.

  790. We want to respond to the word of God.

  791. If it's the primary means of disciplehip

  792. in your life, you should expect to be

  793. pricricked by it.

  794. It should sting sometimes.

  795. It should sting sometimes. It sometimes

  796. hurts. If there's never any

  797. controversial thing that's ever said

  798. from up here, it's probably very little

  799. content to our preaching

  800. because like I said, the world and often

  801. our hearts are against God.

  802. And so there's wounding that happens,

  803. but that wounding shouldn't stay there

  804. because the gospel of grace should come

  805. in and heal the wound.

  806. We see ourselves and we see Christ and

  807. we say, "Praise God."

  808. If it's the primary means of disciplehip

  809. in our lives, it probably is a good idea

  810. to maybe take some notes. Take notes.

  811. That's not required,

  812. but to be actively engaged

  813. instead of passively listening. Research

  814. shows that we just remember things

  815. better when we take notes.

  816. We remember things better. It's not an

  817. academic experience,

  818. but it's certainly not less than that.

  819. It's way more than that, but it's

  820. certainly not less than wanting to sit

  821. here and learn together.

  822. If it's the primary means of

  823. disciplehip, we should be talking about

  824. it. Let's talk about the sermons with

  825. with one another over tea and coffee

  826. throughout the week. When we meet up,

  827. make a phone call. We should be talking

  828. and discussing what's going on in our

  829. hearts as relating to this text.

  830. If it's the primary means of disciplehip

  831. in your life, when or if you move town

  832. or country, don't move until you have

  833. found a church that prioritizes the

  834. preached word. You should ask yourself,

  835. does the preaching distinguish the

  836. church I'm going to, not the programs,

  837. the preaching, because that is primary.

  838. Another application,

  839. we should be patient with ourselves.

  840. And we should be patient with others as

  841. we hear the word of God preached. We do

  842. not change like that.

  843. It's those 10,000 hours

  844. that move us towards Christ. And so, be

  845. patient with yourself, but be patient

  846. with one another.

  847. And that's another application. Don't

  848. hear sermons with other people in mind.

  849. You're probably all guilty of this. I

  850. am, too. Like, oh, I wish so and so were

  851. listening right now.

  852. You want to turn around. Is are they

  853. here today? Or you think about it for

  854. your like, oh, I hope my wife is hearing

  855. this. She can really She can really hear

  856. this. Don't do that.

  857. Don't do that.

  858. Does it apply to you?

  859. How is the word of God speaking to you?

  860. Fifthly,

  861. pray for the preacher.

  862. Pray for the preacher.

  863. The role of the preacher is one of

  864. suffering.

  865. Pray for endurance.

  866. It's a joy to preach,

  867. but it's also really hard

  868. suffering through seeing my own sin as I

  869. prepare to preach.

  870. It's really hard sometimes to know that

  871. I need to say something that I'm really

  872. weak in and call you to something that

  873. I'm struggling with myself. It can feel

  874. hypocritical at times.

  875. So, pray for your preacher. It's also

  876. suffering because you know there's

  877. there's there's sometimes

  878. where people don't respond and don't

  879. listen.

  880. Think we are a growing church that

  881. responds to the word of God and that is

  882. a joy to watch. It's also really hard

  883. when you see people that don't respond

  884. to the word of God. So pray.

  885. It's also uh a suffering role because

  886. the culture is at odds with the gospel.

  887. And there are preachers all around this

  888. world that go to jail. And if you think

  889. that could never happen in Ireland, I

  890. think you're wrong. And so preaching

  891. what the Bible says is completely

  892. contrary to what the world says.

  893. And there may be a day,

  894. there may be a day, I don't know if it's

  895. in five years or 20 years, where

  896. declaring truths of this book are seen

  897. to be hateful and illegal.

  898. So pray for your preachers.

  899. Sixly, don't idolize a preacher. Uh

  900. preachers are sinners. I've said that

  901. multiple times. Just like you, uh all

  902. men are different.

  903. All men have different personalities,

  904. training, giftedness. Uh so we all have

  905. our favorite sermon or our preferred

  906. preachers, but we should be listening to

  907. God's word

  908. because it's God's word, not because of

  909. the person who's delivering it.

  910. So just guard yourself in that. I would

  911. say just be careful before you start

  912. critiquing the preacher. Have you heard

  913. what God said?

  914. Have you heard what God said?

  915. Seventh, just a couple more. Appoint

  916. elders who prioritize the word. Appoint

  917. elders who prioritize the word. We are

  918. an elder congregational church. The

  919. congregation appoints the elders.

  920. If you're not a member, become a member.

  921. Become a member to help safeguard the

  922. future preaching of this church. That is

  923. a responsibility that is held with the

  924. congregation. The congregation elects

  925. elders and removes elders.

  926. And so that's important. If you want

  927. this church to prioritize the preached

  928. word,

  929. do something about it.

  930. Eighth, have the right expectations.

  931. Your your pastors and elders elders

  932. where primary task the primary task is

  933. to teach and preach the word of God. And

  934. if we are freed, particularly if Shane

  935. is freed, we as elders are freed to do

  936. that

  937. and to preach and to teach faithfully,

  938. the other responsibilities that come

  939. with eldership

  940. will balance themselves out as the word

  941. of God does its work in the body. So,

  942. for example, if you expect a text or a

  943. call or a visit like every week

  944. from one of your pastors, but then you

  945. choose not to be present for the

  946. preaching of the word of God on Sunday,

  947. you're putting your hope in the wrong

  948. thing. You're putting your hope in a

  949. person rather than the transforming

  950. power of God. So, just be mindful of

  951. that.

  952. Ninth, I've said it. I'll say it again.

  953. Celebrate the children in our midst.

  954. celebrate the children are mates. Kids,

  955. we're so glad you're here. We are so

  956. glad you're here.

  957. What can you do to help your child?

  958. Well, maybe prepare them before you

  959. arrive. Pray with them. Give them

  960. expectations on what the service is

  961. going to be like. Remind them of why

  962. this is valuable. Model for them the

  963. singing and the and the and the

  964. engagement with the sermon. Talk about

  965. the sermon with them. Maybe on the way

  966. home, we talk about the sermon on Sunday

  967. at dinner together. There's a quick

  968. conversation on what did we hear from

  969. God today?

  970. And then I would just say to you,

  971. embrace the distraction.

  972. It is actually a short season even

  973. though it doesn't feel short, but it is

  974. a short season that will reap eternal

  975. rewards

  976. for your family.

  977. What can others do if you don't have

  978. kids? What can others do? I would say

  979. greet the children. Help them know

  980. they're welcome. Don't don't turn around

  981. when there's noise. You know, you know,

  982. like you hear the noise behi be behind

  983. you and people are glancing behind and

  984. wondering who it is and just help

  985. parents because they already are knowing

  986. their kid makes noise. Okay, just help

  987. them by not highlighting that by turning

  988. around. That would be super helpful. And

  989. maybe if you don't have children,

  990. purposefully sit next to a family with

  991. smallies. Ask them say, "Can I just

  992. help? Can I help your kids during the

  993. service

  994. so that they parents don't feel alone in

  995. that? I think that those are those are

  996. ways that we can help.

  997. Last application. If if preaching is

  998. that important,

  999. if if all that I am saying is true, if

1000. God transforms us, saves us through his

1001. word, transforms us through his word, if

1002. all of that is that vitally important,

1003. we should be paying a pastor. We should

1004. be moving as a church to paying a pastor

  1005. by ourselves.

1006. Paul writes to Timothy, "Let the elders

1007. who rule well be considered worthy of

1008. double honor, especially those who labor

1009. in preaching and teaching. For the

1010. scripture says, 'You shall not muzzle an

1011. ox when it treads out the grain, and the

  1012. laborer deserves his wages."

1013. Brothers and sisters, you are a generous

  1014. church.

1015. You are a generous church. And by God's

1016. grace, we are actually fairly close to

1017. being able to do that in the not too

1018. distant future of paying a pastor and

1019. paying him well. So, let's pray that we

1020. would do that. Let's continue to be

1021. generous so that that can happen because

1022. if this is so important,

  1023. if I want I I'll pay I'll pay good money

  1024. for a good plumber,

1025. why wouldn't I pay to be fed by the word

  1026. of God?

1027. Think about the situation in the first

  1028. century.

1029. They did not have the freedoms we have.

1030. They did not have the protections we

1031. have. And you know what they did

1032. anyways? They gathered to hear the word

1033. of God preached. That's happening in

1034. China right now and in Indonesia and in

  1035. North Korea, in Nigeria,

1036. brothers and sisters in Christ are

1037. gathering together to hear a holy man of

1038. God open the word of God and say to the

1039. people of God, "Come experience God with

1040. me." in this text. You are so blessed to

1041. have unhindered regular access to the

  1042. preaching of God's word.

1043. What are we going to do with it? What

1044. are we going to do with it?

1045. Remember, church isn't boring. We are

1046. just broken. And so, let us always

1047. be a church that endures sound doctrine.

1048. pray that that this would delight us

1049. and that we would be transformed and

1050. give glory to God in all that we do.

1051. Let me pray. Father, we thank you for

1052. your word. We thank you that we do have

1053. these freedoms that we can hear it.

1054. Father, thank you for preaching.

1055. Thank you, Father, that you reveal

1056. yourself and you've called uh this

1057. imperfect way as the means by which we

1058. can know you and be transformed. That's

1059. just grace. That's just your redemption

1060. on display. And we praise your name for

1061. it. And may we be a church that always

1062. endures that. Always endures sound

  1063. doctrine. Always endures biblical

1064. teaching. Help us, Father. We pray in

  1065. Jesus name. Amen.

1066. Let's stand together and sing.
