  1. Well, good morning. Uh, please grab your

  2. Bibles and open them up to Matthew

  3. 28. Please grab your Bibles,

  4. open them up to Matthew

  5. 28

  6. this morning. That is the first few

  7. verses we're going to be looking at, but

  8. we're going to be looking at a lot more

  9. verses than that. We will start in

  10. Matthew 28. Uh, but the rest of the

  11. verses that we'll be looking at, they

  12. will be up on the screen behind you

  13. hopefully. Um, so that will just help us

  14. uh to follow God's word this morning.

  15. It's different from what we usually do.

  16. Normally, we take a passage and just

  17. walk through it. Uh, but what we're

  18. looking at is the theme of baptism. and

  19. we'll look at that throughout the

  20. scriptures this morning. So, let us pray

  21. together.

  22. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  23. Thank you that we have it in front of

  24. us.

  25. Help us to learn and seek to live out

  26. this word that you have given us.

  27. Speak to us, Lord. We pray for your

  28. servants are listening.

  29. Help us hear your voice. Help us apply

  30. it in our lives and hearts.

  31. And we pray all these things

  32. in Jesus precious name.

  33. Amen.

  34. These last few weeks we have been going

  35. through a series kind of called why

  36. and it's related to why do we do what we

  37. do as a church and Steve has preached

  38. some excellent sermons to us. If you

  39. haven't heard them I'd encourage you to

  40. listen to them. Why do we preach? Why do

  41. we pray? Why do we sing?

  42. And now this morning we're asking why

  43. baptism?

  44. Why do we have baptism?

  45. And it's important for us as a church to

  46. ask this question. Why? I don't know if

  47. you notice sometimes in your life,

  48. you're you're doing things and you're

  49. just going through the motions and then

  50. when you stop and pause, you kind of go,

  51. why am I doing this?

  52. Why am I doing the things that I am

  53. doing? And that's important for a church

  54. to do as well. Sometimes we go to church

  55. and we go through the motions. We pray

  56. and we sing and we preach and we do all

  57. these things. But it's very important

  58. for us as a church to stop and ask the

  59. question, why are we doing this?

  60. It's really important to ask that

  61. question.

  62. Do you know why

  63. most churches

  64. who are dead

  65. forget to ask the question why we're

  66. doing what we're doing? The early guys

  67. who started the church, they know. But

  68. then what happens is people end up doing

  69. things on the basis of tradition rather

  70. than on the basis of God's word. And so

  71. what we want to constantly be doing as a

  72. church is come back and ask the

  73. question, why are we doing this? because

  74. we want to do it because the Bible tells

  75. us to do it, not just because it is

  76. tradition.

  77. So that's why we're asking the question

  78. of why when it comes to baptism. Why

  79. baptism?

  80. And the first thing I want you to see

  81. about why baptism is this, it's very

  82. simple actually. The first answer, it's

  83. it's it's the easy one. Why baptism?

  84. Baptism is a command.

  85. It's the first thing we are commanded to

  86. do it. That's why we do baptism. And I

  87. would love if in a baptism service

  88. sometime down the line, you could just

  89. picture that it's your very first time

  90. coming to a service like that and people

  91. are getting into the water and someone's

  92. getting dunked and they're all wearing

  93. clothes and they're all adults and you

  94. and if you were to just look at it, come

  95. in to the church for the very first time

  96. and it's good for us to remember that it

  97. looks kind of weird.

  98. It's a strange practice. seems normal to

  99. us, but actually we need to put

  100. ourselves in the shoes of people who are

  101. visiting and kind of go that's strange.

  102. It looks really weird that you're doing

  103. this. You're actually adults making that

  104. decision to get into water, cold water,

  105. and dunk someone. Why are you doing

  106. that? And the simple reason is this. It

  107. is a command.

  108. Look at Matthew 28:18.

    Matthew 28:18

  109. Sarah read it to us earlier. It says

  110. this, "And Jesus came and said to them,

  111. all authority in heaven and on earth has

  112. been given to me. Go therefore and make

  113. disciples of all nations, baptizing them

  114. in the name of the Father and of the Son

  115. and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching

  116. them to observe all that I have

  117. commanded you. And behold, I am with you

  118. always to the end of the age." This is

  119. why we do baptism. It is a command and

  120. it is given by the risen Lord Jesus.

  121. People forget that at the point that

  122. Jesus gave this command, he is now

  123. resurrected from the dead. Can you

  124. imagine if a friend of yours was dead

  125. and he comes to life and he says the

  126. first words he says to you? Those first

  127. words, they're going to be important,

  128. aren't they? These are the first words

  129. that Jesus, the resurrected Lord, says

  130. to the apostles. And he says this, "All

  131. authority has been given unto me."

  132. Here's what I want you to do. Here's the

  133. command. Make disciples. And then how do

  134. you make disciples? Well, there's two

  135. ways of doing that. You baptize them in

  136. the name of the Lord and you teach them.

  137. This is the command given to us. So

  138. that's why we baptize. We're commanded

  139. to do this. And that's why every

  140. Christian should be baptized. They are

  141. commanded to do it by the Lord Jesus.

  142. Baptism is a command. The second thing

  143. you need to learn about baptism is this.

  144. It is a personal decision. Baptism is

  145. not only a command, but it is a personal

  146. decision. It's not like you're you're

  147. commanded so I'm robotically going to

  148. go. It is a personal decision to obey

  149. that command. That is baptism. So what

  150. happened with the apostles after they

  151. received this command? After the

  152. apostles received this command, what did

  153. they do? They went out and they started

  154. preaching about Jesus and they started

  155. preaching that he not only died, that he

  156. not only was buried, but this Jesus, he

  157. rose from the dead. And they pleaded

  158. with people to believe in Jesus. They

  159. pleaded with people to repent of their

  160. sin. And they told people, "Get

  161. baptized."

  162. They gave that command to people that

  163. Jesus gave to them. And we see this

  164. after Peter's preaching in Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  165. 2. Look at Acts 2:37.

    Acts 2:37

  166. Here's what it says in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  167. 2037.

  168. Now when they heard this, they were cut

  169. to the heart. This is after Peter's

  170. preaching. They were cut to the heart

  171. and said to Peter and the rest of the

  172. apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"

  173. And Peter said to them, "Repent and be

  174. baptized, every one of you, in the name

  175. of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of

  176. your sins, and you will receive the gift

  177. of the Holy Spirit." They hear Peter's

  178. preaching. They're convicted to the

  179. heart. They know. who they put up their

  180. hands and say, "I'm a sinner. I know

  181. that in in my thoughts, in my words, in

  182. my actions, they're they're cut to the

  183. heart with the gospel." And they ask

  184. this really important question that all

  185. of us should ask in our lives. What

  186. shall we do? Okay, you've preached the

  187. gospel. Great sermon. Everybody's

  188. listening. There's thousands of us here.

  189. Now, tell me what to do. What's the

  190. application? What should we do?

  191. He says this, "Repent

  192. and be baptized

  193. for the forgiveness of sins."

  194. Doesn't that show something of the

  195. importance of baptism?

  196. What must I do? You must repent and you

  197. must be baptized. It's a command.

  198. But notice the personal decision. They

  199. say, "What must we do?" Because they

  200. know from hearing the preaching of the

  201. gospel, we must do something. We must

  202. decide. We must make a personal decision

  203. here. The personal decision is this. You

  204. must repent first,

  205. confess your sin first,

  206. personally,

  207. and then be baptized.

  208. That's the biblical pattern. And then

  209. after this passage, you see in Actsap

  210. 2:41, look at that. It says, "So those

  211. who received the word, his word, were

  212. baptized, and they were added that day

  213. about 3,000 souls."

  214. 3,000 people heard this message. They

  215. received the message personally

  216. themselves. They made a personal

  217. decision to believe that word, that

  218. gospel by faith and they were baptized

  219. and then they were added to the church.

  220. It was a personal decision. They

  221. received the word. They were baptized.

  222. And then as the gospel went out forward

  223. in the book of Acts, Philip went out

  224. from Jerusalem. He went out to Samaria

  225. and he went out preaching the gospel

  226. that Jesus died for your sins. That he

  227. was buried. That on the third day he

  228. rose again. And if you would believe and

  229. trust in Jesus, you will have all your

  230. sins forgiven past, present, and future.

  231. And you will rise with him from the

  232. dead. And after they heard this message,

  233. look at what happens in Acts 8:12. It

    Acts 8:12

  234. says this. But when they believed

  235. Philillip as he preached the good news

  236. about the kingdom of God and the name of

  237. Jesus Christ, they were baptized both

  238. men and women. What did they do? They

  239. heard the message. They believed and

  240. trusted the message. It was a personal

  241. decision. And then they were baptized.

  242. Baptism

  243. is a command that needs to be obeyed.

  244. And baptism is a personal decision that

  245. you need to make. You need to repent of

  246. your sin, trust in Jesus, and then be

  247. baptized.

  248. That is the call for everyone. And then

  249. if someone is reading the book of Acts

  250. quite well, and and hopefully you did,

  251. we spent like a year in it, so hopefully

  252. you did.

  253. In the book of Acts, you have these

  254. three occasions that people bring up.

  255. It's in Acts 11, Acts 16, Acts 18. And

  256. in Acts 11:1, 16, and 18, households are

    Acts 11:1

  257. baptized. So what people say is they

  258. say, well, is it a personal decision?

  259. Because these households seem to get

  260. baptized. One person believes and the

  261. whole household gets baptized.

  262. But as you see the pattern in the book

  263. of Acts, it is always a pattern that

  264. they believe first and then they were

  265. baptized. And I would argue that that is

  266. the case especially with the households

  267. as well. I'll give you one example from

  268. one household. It was Paul and Silas

  269. were in prison and they were broken out

  270. of prison miraculously by the Lord. And

  271. after they are broken out of prison

  272. miraculously by the Lord, the jailer is

  273. going to kill himself. Paul comes back.

  274. Paul runs out of prison and he decides

  275. to come back. Like who goes back? Who

  276. goes back? Paul goes back. Paul runs

  277. back to him

  278. and then he says this. The jailer says

  279. in Acts 16:30. Look at Acts 16:30. Then

    Acts 16:30 Acts 16:30

  280. he brought them out and said, "Sers,

  281. what must I do to be saved?"

  282. And they said, "Believe in the Lord

  283. Jesus and you will be saved, you and

  284. your household." So the jailer says, he

  285. sees this kind of sermon and action.

  286. They're like blow out of jail. And and

  287. then he's asking the personal response

  288. like the crowd, "What must I do? Tell me

  289. what I must do." He says, "First,

  290. believe in the Lord Jesus and you will

  291. be saved. You and your household." The

  292. implication is this. you and your

  293. household, all of you must believe and

  294. then you'll be saved. And then it says

  295. later in Acts 16 that him and his

  296. household were baptized because they

  297. believed, they were saved, all of them

  298. were baptized. And what we ignore at the

  299. end near the end of that account is they

  300. rejoiced.

  301. The whole household rejoiced.

  302. And so all of this tells us that baptism

  303. is not just a command. It is a personal

  304. decision.

  305. One of the things I love about our

  306. baptism services,

  307. one of the favorite things I love about

  308. our baptism services is the time when

  309. people stand up and they give their

  310. testimonies.

  311. It's wonderful when people stand up and

  312. they declare their testimony before

  313. people. Our last baptism, wasn't it

  314. wonderful to hear hear Carl's testimony

  315. and and Zara's testimony and John Luke's

  316. testimony and Nicole's testimony. We

  317. didn't have 3,000. Maybe one day we

  318. will, but it was four

  319. wonderful testimonies. And what were

  320. they saying? This is a personal decision

  321. of mine.

  322. I'm telling all of you publicly that I

  323. have repented of my sin. I'm telling all

  324. of you publicly that I've put my faith

  325. and trust in Jesus. And I'm telling all

  326. of you publicly that now I am obeying

  327. him and I'm being baptized.

  328. That's why I love the testimonies. Now,

  329. there might be a day there might be a

  330. day where we don't have everyone give

  331. their testimonies. Hopefully, we'll have

  332. too many pe I don't think on the day

  333. that 3,000 people were baptized, they

  334. gave each of them like 20 minutes for

  335. their testimony. I don't think that

  336. happened. But I still think it's a a

  337. good practice if we can do it. So, we

  338. can hear this is personal. This is

  339. personal to the person.

  340. So, baptism is a command. Baptism is a

  341. personal decision.

  342. Then what must we do? Well, the answer

  343. to what we must do is is very simple.

  344. All of you in this room

  345. need to determine this. Have I put my

  346. faith and trust in Jesus?

  347. Have you

  348. repented of your sin?

  349. Have you said to Jesus

  350. of sinned in thought, I've sinned in

  351. word? I've sinned in deed. I know you. I

  352. know you have sinned. The game is up.

  353. And guess what? All of us are the same.

  354. We're all the same. All of us are in

  355. this boat. And there is a way to be

  356. free. There is a way to be forgiven. And

  357. it is by trusting in Jesus.

  358. And if you do that, do you know what the

  359. next step is?

  360. It is to obey and be baptized.

  361. To confess your sin before Jesus and to

  362. be baptized in front of everybody else

  363. is a public declaration, an outward

  364. display of an inward change of the

  365. heart. That's what you are called to

  366. personally do.

  367. And that's a call for everybody in this

  368. room.

  369. And it's even a call for the children.

  370. And I think we as a church need to think

  371. through this. Well,

  372. what about the children? You know,

  373. people often push me for an age of

  374. baptism.

  375. What's the age of baptism, Shane? What's

  376. the age of baptism? Well, look at the

  377. scripture and I can see when you're

  378. eight, you get baptized. When you're 10,

  379. you get baptized. When you're 12, you

  380. get baptized. When you're 15, you get

  381. baptized. When you're 21, you get

  382. baptized. I don't see an age. Do you see

  383. an age? If you see an age, tell me. I

  384. don't see an age.

  385. But here is the important thing.

  386. We believe that all who are baptized,

  387. they must repent of their sin, trust

  388. personally in Jesus. And so for

  389. children, we want to be really careful

  390. that they have repented of their sin and

  391. that they have trusted in Jesus.

  392. So as a church, here's what we're going

  393. to do with children. We are going to

  394. take our time

  395. because it is especially tempting for a

  396. child to try and please a parent, try

  397. and please the church, try and go at the

  398. crowd. And what we want to make sure it

  399. is really dangerous for us to baptize

  400. someone and say, "Hey, you're in the

  401. faith." And they're not. So what we want

  402. to do is take our time with the

  403. children. While we will say as a church,

  404. we don't have an age, we will say as a

  405. church that we want to take our time and

  406. ensure that this is their personal

  407. decision that they have decided to

  408. trust, believe in Jesus. So what's our

  409. age? I don't have it personally. I do

  410. have a bit of an age in our family, but

  411. you can ask me that afterwards.

  412. So, baptism, it is a command.

  413. It is a personal decision. But there's

  414. another thing that we often ignore as we

  415. think of baptism. And it is this. It is

  416. also the church's decision.

  417. It is not just a command and a personal

  418. decision. It is also the church's

  419. decision. Often what we do with the

  420. practices of the church is we make them

  421. guess what? Guess what we do with

  422. everything? We make it all about

  423. ourselves.

  424. So preaching, we were talking about

  425. preaching and we make it about me. How

  426. did I feel after that? How how did he do

  427. according to me or whatever? We make it

  428. all about me. But it's not all about

  429. you. It's us who are receiving the

  430. preaching and us who are giving glory to

  431. God. And then we do that with our our

  432. singing, don't we? Oh, how did the song

  433. make me feel? Do I like the song? Do I

  434. like the genre? Do I like the We make it

  435. all about me. But it's not about you

  436. alone. It's about God and his glory. And

  437. when you're singing, you're not only

  438. singing to yourself and the songs that

  439. you like. You're singing praises to God

  440. and to one another. It it is corporate.

  441. All of these practices in the church.

  442. They're not just individual. They're

  443. corporate. And so it is with baptism. It

  444. is the decision of the church. Now, how

  445. do we know it is the decision of the

  446. church? Not just an individual decision,

  447. but the decision of the church. When

  448. someone is getting baptized, here's

  449. what's happening. The person standing

  450. there is making a decision, aren't they?

  451. But the person who gets in also has to

  452. make a decision. Will I baptize them?

  453. So, it's not just them making the

  454. decision. It's the person getting in.

  455. So, what gives them, the person who is

  456. baptizing, authority to do it? What

  457. allows them do that?

  458. Well, what allows them do that is the

  459. authority that is given from Jesus. In

  460. the Gospel of Matthew, you have this

  461. theme that runs throughout the Gospel of

  462. Matthew that is about the authority of

  463. Jesus.

  464. And we see in the Gospel of Matthew the

  465. authority of firstly Jesus' words. In

  466. Matthew 7 verse 28, it says this after

    Matthew 7:28

  467. the sermon on the mount, after Jesus

  468. preached the sermon on the mount, it

  469. says this. And when Jesus finished these

  470. sayings, the crowd were astonished at

  471. his teaching, for he was teaching them

  472. as one who had authority

  473. and not as their scribes. Jesus had

  474. authority in his teaching. He had

  475. authority in his words. But Jesus not

  476. only had authority in his teaching and

  477. authority in his words, he had authority

  478. in his actions.

  479. After Jesus' sermon, he went and he did

  480. a few miracles. We know that about

  481. Jesus. And after he had healed the

  482. paralytic, here's what it says about his

  483. actions in Matthew 9:8.

    Matthew 9:8

  484. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid

  485. and they glorified God

  486. who had given such authority to men. So

  487. Jesus, he is authority in his words. He

  488. is a authority in his actions.

  489. And then you come to Matthew 28 verse

    Matthew 28:18

  490. 18, the great commission. And Jesus came

  491. to them and said, "All authority in

  492. heaven and on earth has been given unto

  493. me. Go therefore and make disciples of

  494. all nations, baptizing them in the name

  495. of the Father and of the Son and of the

  496. Holy Spirit.

  497. Jesus has authority in his teaching.

  498. Jesus has authority in his actions.

  499. Jesus comes after raising from the dead

  500. and he says, "All authority has been

  501. given unto me." And then what does Jesus

  502. do? He hands that authority over to the

  503. apostles. He hands that authority over

  504. to the church and says, "Here's what I

  505. want you to do. Go and baptize and go

  506. and teach." Who is the authority to

  507. baptize? Well, it was given to the

  508. apostles and then the apostles became

  509. the 120 and the 120 became the 3,000.

  510. And the 3,000 were called the the

  511. church. And then they went and they

  512. started other churches and there was

  513. elders. And so it is the responsibility

  514. of the church to baptize. The church is

  515. the one who has authority to do these

  516. things.

  517. People are baptized then by the church

  518. and they are baptized when they are

  519. baptized into the church.

  520. The church gets to decide according to

  521. Jesus. We'll talk about this more next

  522. week when we talk about membership. But

  523. the church gets to decide by the

  524. authority of Jesus who is in the church

  525. and who is out of the church.

  526. They get to decide who is in the church

  527. by who they baptize according to the

  528. testimony. And they also in Matthew 18

  529. when Jesus says about church discipline.

  530. They also to get to decide when it's

  531. time for someone to leave the church.

  532. And we'll talk about that more next

  533. week. But baptism is by the church and

  534. baptism is into the church. Here's why I

  535. say that. Acts 2:41.

    Acts 2:41

  536. So those who received his word, they

  537. received the word baptized

  538. and they were added that day about 3,000

  539. souls.

  540. They believed by faith. It was their

  541. personal decision. They were baptized

  542. according to the command of God. And

  543. then they were baptized by the church

  544. and then they were added to the church.

  545. That's what happens in baptism. Again,

  546. you can see this in 1 Corinthians 12:3.

    1 Corinthians 12:3

  547. It says this there, "For in one spirit

  548. we were all baptized into the one body,

  549. Jews and Greeks, slaves are free, and

  550. all were made to drink of the one

  551. spirit."

  552. In the one spirit, we were all baptized

  553. where? into the one body.

  554. The baptism of water and the baptism of

  555. the spirit are connected in Jesus

  556. baptism. When you are baptized, you are

  557. baptized into the body that is the

  558. church.

  559. So baptism should be by the church and

  560. baptism should be into the church.

  561. So, let's imagine for a second, and I'm

  562. going to pick on Steve for a second. Not

  563. going to embarrass you. Just going to

  564. pick on him because it's easier um to

  565. choose an elder. So, pick on Steve.

  566. Chose not to. I I always pick on

  567. Brendan, but I'll go with Steve. So,

  568. let's say

  569. Steve goes out and he evangelizes into

  570. passage.

  571. He's telling people about Jesus and he's

  572. calling on them to trust and believe in

  573. Jesus and repent of their sins. And

  574. there's was this one guy. He repents of

  575. his sin. He trusts in Jesus. He

  576. believes.

  577. Should Steve take that guy straight away

  578. in that moment and baptize him in the

  579. water?

  580. I would say no. That's Steve going on

  581. his own. people at the time were

  582. baptized by the church and baptized into

  583. the church. He shouldn't go it alone,

  584. but

  585. that's the norm. But there are occasions

  586. where it might have to happen. So in

  587. this scenario, there actually is a

  588. church in passage who Steve can bring

  589. the person to and the church can decide,

  590. are we going to baptize this person?

  591. Let's say Steve in another scenario,

  592. Steve goes,

  593. he flies to the middle of nowhere and

  594. there's no church around and he calls on

  595. this person to believe, repent of their

  596. sin and be baptized

  597. and he decides to baptize that person.

  598. Now, is that wrong? I would say no, it

  599. is not wrong because there's no church

  600. there. And there are unique occasions.

  601. The majority of occasion is this in the

  602. book of Acts. People believe, they're

  603. baptized, and they're added into the

  604. church. But there is this one occasion

  605. in Acts chapter 8. It's not the rule,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  606. it's the exception. And in Acts chapter

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  607. 8, you have Philillip and the Ethiopian

  608. unic.

  609. And with Philip and the Ethanopian unic,

  610. here's what happens.

  611. Philip shares with him. They're in a

  612. desert at the time. The church is just

  613. being built. there's no church around

  614. and they say, "Well, here's water." So

  615. he says, "Why delay?" They say, "Okay."

  616. And they baptize him. So there are

  617. occasions,

  618. exceptions where people are baptized not

  619. directly by the church. But the norm is

  620. people are baptized by the church and

  621. they're baptized into the church. So

  622. what is baptism? Baptism is a command.

  623. Baptism is a personal decision. Baptism

  624. is a church's decision.

  625. And you also need to think about baptism

  626. like this. Number four, baptism is kind

  627. of like this. Baptism

  628. is a birth if you like. There's a guy I

  629. was reading called Jonathan Leman and he

  630. gave this image of baptism being like a

  631. birthert. What do I mean by that? That

  632. baptism is like a birtherer.

  633. I remember the day that Talitha was born

  634. and it was a interesting birth story.

  635. You can ask Lana about it. I won't tell

  636. it here.

  637. Talitha is born and we know like she's

  638. part of the family. I mean, straight

  639. away, as soon as she's born, I'm like in

  640. love with her straight away. She's mine.

  641. You know, it's crazy. In normal

  642. relationships, you kind of have to work

  643. on the love and all that kind of stuff.

  644. When you see a child, it just happens,

  645. doesn't it? It's like phenomenal. I know

  646. of no relationship where it just happens

  647. like that. Phenomenal. I see her. But

  648. then you kind of need to make it

  649. official, don't you? I mean, she's part

  650. of the family. Absolutely. And you

  651. celebrate that, but you you need to make

  652. it official. And how how do you make it

  653. official before the eyes of the country,

  654. and the eyes of the law, you have to get

  655. a birthert

  656. to to make sure that everybody knows

  657. this person is really part of this

  658. family. You you got to believe me. She's

  659. beautiful. I'm not. But but here's the

  660. birth to prove it. Like she's part of

  661. the family.

  662. And so you're you're like really nervous

  663. like putting her name down and trying to

  664. say I'm like confirming Willowana. Is

  665. this what we want to call her? Okay.

  666. Yeah. Okay. Grant. And you make the

  667. birth to confirm officially confirm this

  668. one is part of the family. That's what

  669. baptism is. Baptism is the birther that

  670. confirms that this one is actually part

  671. of the family. You'll notice it's not on

  672. the screen, but you'll remember from the

  673. verses that I shared with you in the

  674. great commission where Jesus says,

  675. "Baptize them." And what does he say?

  676. Baptize them in the name

  677. of the father and the son and the holy

  678. spirit. Have you noticed when we get

  679. into water with someone, we baptize them

  680. in the name of the father and of the son

  681. and of the holy sp. Why do we do that?

  682. Because it says it in the scripture.

  683. What's amazing about that statement? It

  684. is is it is a trinitarian statement.

  685. Baptized in the name, one name of the

  686. father, son, and holy spirit. But what's

  687. also amazing about that statement is

  688. this. It tells you something about your

  689. identity.

  690. When you are baptized, you are baptized

  691. into the name of Jesus. You're you're

  692. wearing the Jesus jersey as as you like.

  693. You're you're holding out. You're

  694. identifying yourself with Jesus. I'm a

  695. follower of Jesus. I trust in Jesus. So,

  696. not only in baptism are you identifying

  697. with Jesus, but you're clothing yourself

  698. with Jesus. In Galatians chapter 3 verse

    Galatians 3:26

  699. 26, it says this, "For in Christ Jesus,

  700. you were all sons of God through faith.

  701. For as many of you as were baptized into

  702. Christ have put on Christ."

  703. So in these verses, verse 26,

  704. how do you come to Jesus? You come to

  705. Jesus. Verse 20. How do you how do you

  706. get called a son of God? You get called

  707. a son of God. Not by baptism, but it

  708. says through faith. It is by faith that

  709. you are saved. But then it says this,

  710. for as many of you as were baptized into

  711. Christ, being baptized into Christ Jesus

  712. is another way of being baptized into

  713. the body of Christ, into the church,

  714. baptized into Christ. You then put on

  715. Christ.

  716. So baptism is actually quite

  717. significant. The moment of it is quite

  718. significant. The water can do nothing.

  719. The water cannot cleanse you from your

  720. sin. It's faith and trust in Jesus. But

  721. in the moment of baptism, you are

  722. declaring something really important.

  723. It's not just this this random thing

  724. that we kind of have to do and faith is

  725. the main thing. Actually, faith and

  726. baptism are really tied together. And

  727. baptism is really important because

  728. baptism is how you get the birthert.

  729. And the birthert is really important to

  730. you. Here's why it is really important

  731. to you. Have you ever ever once doubted

  732. your faith?

  733. Can I put up my hand first?

  734. And can I imagine that all of you are

  735. putting up your hand at some point that

  736. you've doubted whether you are in Jesus

  737. that you've said to yourself, I don't

  738. really know. Am I part of this family?

  739. or Satan comes to you and he said you're

  740. are you really part of the family do you

  741. know what baptism does in those moments

  742. you go you take out the birth serve and

  743. you say here

  744. yes I am I was baptized and here's the

  745. evidence there was a day in my life when

  746. I made a decision and said in front of

  747. everybody I'm following Jesus

  748. and guess what I didn't make that

  749. decision alone

  750. The church said he's a follower of Jesus

  751. or she's a follower of Jesus and here's

  752. the evidence to prove it. I have put on

  753. the clothes. Get back from me, Satan.

  754. That's what the birthert is. That's what

  755. baptism is. It is so so important.

  756. So baptism is a birthert. Number five,

  757. baptism is also a sign. It's important

  758. for us to know that baptism is a sign to

  759. us. It is not just a birthert that helps

  760. us when we're doubting. It's it's a sign

  761. to us. And it is a sign to us of this.

  762. It is a sign to you and me of the most

  763. important relationship that you have on

  764. this planet. It is a sign of your

  765. relationship with God.

  766. It is a sign of the covenant

  767. relationship with God.

  768. When we think of signs of the covenant,

  769. we did a series on the covenants in the

  770. Bible. When you think of signs of the

  771. covenant, the covenant that we know and

  772. understand in this world is the covenant

  773. of marriage.

  774. And what is the earthly human sign of

  775. the covenant of marriage? Well, one of

  776. the earthly human signs of the covenant

  777. of marriage is the ring.

  778. We put on this ring as a sign of the

  779. covenant. as a sign of my relationship

  780. between me and Lana. This ring is an

  781. outward sign of that relationship that I

  782. have with her. Now, does the ring

  783. actually mean anything? No. But the ring

  784. confirms that I have a deep meaningful

  785. relationship with her. So, what does it

  786. do? The ring, it tells me, reminds me

  787. that I have a relationship. I have a

  788. covenant relationship. And what does the

  789. ring also do? The ring tells everybody

  790. else that I have a covenant

  791. relationship, that I am taken. Not that

  792. anybody cares, but that I am taken.

  793. That's what the ring says. It confirms

  794. the covenant. And so what you have in

  795. scripture, you have signs of the

  796. covenant. The sign of the Old Testament

  797. covenant was the sign of circumcision.

  798. It was the sign given to Abraham in and

  799. through the promise in in Genesis 12,

  800. Genesis 15, and particularly in Genesis

  801. 17. It was the sign of the covenant. And

  802. the sign of the covenant that you,

  803. Israel, are going to be a nation after

  804. me. Whether you're a believer or not,

  805. I'm going to confirm you as my nation,

  806. as my possession. And here's the sign

  807. for you and everybody else to know. It

  808. is circumcision.

  809. physical circumcision for the males

  810. among you. But then that sign

  811. actually was there to point forward to

  812. not physical circumcision, but spiritual

  813. circumcision. That sign was always there

  814. to point forward to spiritual

  815. circumcision. And here's where we see

  816. that in Deuteronomy 30:6. says this,

    Deuteronomy 30:6

  817. "And the Lord your God will circumcise

  818. your heart and the heart of your

  819. offspring so that you will love the Lord

  820. your God with all your heart, soul,

  821. mind, and strength, and that you may

  822. live." So this circumcision sign in the

  823. Old Testament, the Old Covenant, it was

  824. a physical sign. That physical sign was

  825. the point forward to the spiritual sign

  826. that will take place.

  827. And then that sign, that spiritual sign

  828. pointed forward to the new covenant sign

  829. that we have of baptism.

  830. The new covenant sign of baptism is

  831. this. Colossians chapter 2 verse 11

    Colossians 2:11–12

  832. to12. It says this, "In him also you

  833. were circumcised with a circumcision

  834. made without hands by the putting off of

  835. the flesh, but by the circumcision of

  836. Christ, having been buried with him in

  837. baptism, in which you were also raised

  838. with him through faith in the powerful

  839. working of God, who raised him from the

  840. dead."

  841. There was a sign of the old covenant and

  842. there is a sign of the new covenant

  843. relationship. They are different signs

  844. and the only way you can get the sign of

  845. the new covenant relationship is if you

  846. have put your faith and trust in Jesus.

  847. And one of the ways you wear that sign

  848. publicly is by getting baptized.

  849. Now, all of that is to say, not sure if

  850. you all followed me there, but all of

  851. that is to say this.

  852. What if

  853. I were to walk into a room

  854. and you were to see me do this

  855. and put this away here nowadays?

  856. And I was to walk in the room like this.

  857. Now, some people, you know, the ring

  858. doesn't fit anymore. I get it. and you

  859. lose it and all that, okay? And it's a

  860. cultural thing, all that.

  861. But if I were to actually choose

  862. not to wear it,

  863. choose to take it off,

  864. what would that say?

  865. That would say this to Lana,

  866. I'm keeping my options open.

  867. I mean, I've made a personal decision. I

  868. love you. Why do I need to wear

  869. something to prove that? Why are you

  870. constricting me to wear something to

  871. prove that I love you? Just let it be

  872. enough for me to personally say I love

  873. you. No,

  874. we have to trust in the Lord Jesus. Say

  875. we love the Lord Jesus and go public

  876. with it. Wear the sign and tell

  877. everybody,

  878. "I'm in a relationship with him and no

  879. other. He's my first love.

  880. That's what baptism does. So, so

  881. significant.

  882. The final thing that we learn of baptism

  883. is this. Number six. Baptism is a theme.

  884. Is a theme. Baptism isn't only a

  885. birthert. Baptism isn't only a sign, but

  886. baptism is a really important theme in

  887. the scriptures.

  888. When you think about the way we baptize

  889. in this church,

  890. I want you for a second to think about

  891. all that happens when we have to baptize

  892. someone. You might have thought about

  893. this, but here's what happens. There's

  894. this broken up pool in a store storage

  895. facility in Middleton.

  896. Okay, the pool is all broken up.

  897. Brendan, usually Brendan gets in the car

  898. and he has to drive to Middleton,

  899. confirm with the guy that we're going to

  900. do this or whatever and take and then we

  901. get the pool. He shoves it into his car

  902. and then he drives up here early morning

  903. on the day of the baptism.

  904. Then it takes a few lads to kind of get

  905. it together and then there's like this

  906. plastic thing that's like I don't know

  907. if you how do you describe it? It's like

  908. if you're putting um like you know those

  909. really annoying swimming hats that are

  910. like you just like have to hold it and

  911. like pull it back. That's what it's like

  912. except a massive one of those that you

  913. need to pull around and and shove around

  914. the pool. Then for hours that morning,

  915. we need to get a socket thing, put it

  916. into the the sink in the kitchen, you

  917. know, with a hose or whatever, put that

  918. hose in, and then it needs to fill up

  919. for hours. And we've even tried to heat

  920. it, but we can't. It's freezing.

  921. Why do we do all that?

  922. Like why do you do it? I'll tell you why

  923. we don't do it. We don't do it because

  924. it's practical.

  925. It is in no way practical.

  926. We do it because we believe it is

  927. biblical.

  928. That's why we do that. That's why we go

  929. to all that effort to fill the pool so

  930. someone can get in so we can actually

  931. put them down into the water and take

  932. them up out of the water. We do it

  933. because we believe it is biblical

  934. and not just because of the word

  935. baptism. The word baptism is the word

  936. baptiso

  937. in the verb form and in the noun form.

  938. It comes up in the Bible about 96 times.

  939. Each time it comes up, it does mean as a

  940. word, it means to immerse or to dip or

  941. fully immerse into water. That's what

  942. the word means. And that's why we

  943. immerse people fully into water. But we

  944. don't just immerse them fully into water

  945. just because of the word. We immerse

  946. them fully into water because of the

  947. Bible's theme.

  948. This is the image and picture in the

  949. Bible. And we get this theme from 1

    1 Peter 3:20

  950. Peter 3 verse 20. 1 Peter chapter 3

    1 Peter 3:20

  951. verse 20.

  952. says this,

  953. "God's patience waited in the days of

  954. Noah while the ark was being prepared in

  955. which a few that is eight persons were

  956. brought safely through the water.

  957. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now

  958. saves you not as a removal of dirt from

  959. the body, but as an appeal to God for a

  960. good conscience through the resurrection

  961. of Jesus Christ.

  962. You're near the end of the sermon. Why

  963. do you bring up that verse? Baptism

  964. saves. And you've just been making the

  965. point that it doesn't.

  966. It's like seriously like when I was

  967. studying this, it's like it's like a

  968. moth to a flame. That's an interesting

  969. verse. What What does that mean?

  970. It says it in the Bible, doesn't it? I

  971. mean, it says it in verse um before we

  972. get to the team, I have to explain the

  973. verse and go the long way around it, but

  974. let's do it. It says in verse 21,

  975. "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now

  976. saves you." Does it not say that? That's

  977. what it says. But you need to remember

  978. the next part of the verse.

  979. Not as a removal of dirt from the body.

  980. In other words, it baptism doesn't

  981. cleanse you. Doesn't cleanse you from

  982. your sin. It doesn't clean off the dirt.

  983. It doesn't remove the dirt. It doesn't

  984. do any of that. What what cleans off the

  985. dirt. What removes the dirt is

  986. repentance and faith.

  987. But baptism is so closely intertwined

  988. with faith. That is the first step of a

  989. Christian after they've believed and

  990. trusted in Jesus is they get baptized is

  991. so tied to that that it says that it's

  992. not the removal of dirt or the removal

  993. of sin but it is an appeal to God for a

  994. good conscience

  995. through the resurrection of Jesus.

  996. You're appealing to the resurrection of

  997. Jesus.

  998. Your clean conscience is this. You're

  999. obeying in in baptism. You're obeying

1000. the command of Jesus. And that's part of

1001. of your conscience being cleansed, being

1002. baptized. That's part of the appeal.

1003. It's not the washing away of dirt. It is

1004. the belief and it is the appeal or what

1005. I prefer, the word I prefer is a pledge

1006. of a clean conscience to the Lord.

  1007. That's what baptism is.

1008. Now you get to the baptism theme.

1009. He says in verse 21,

1010. baptism corresponds to this. Meaning

1011. baptism links to this. Now if I heard

1012. him preaching this, I would say Peter,

1013. you are stretching because he's saying

1014. the water of baptism. Do you know what

1015. the water of baptism reminds me of? And

1016. it's kind of like he's almost making

1017. this stuff up. The water of baptism

1018. reminds me of a story in the Bible. What

1019. story? Remember Noah in the water?

1020. That's what baptism corresponds to. If I

1021. was listening to that sermon, I'd be

1022. like, "Where are you getting that from?"

1023. Where is he getting it from? The Holy

1024. Spirit. He's inspired by the Holy

1025. Spirit. And he's saying, "Baptism

1026. corresponds to Noah and the flood." And

1027. you're like, "How on earth does that

  1028. work?"

1029. Here's how it works. It links in with

  1030. the theme of immersion.

1031. It links in with the theme of immersion

  1032. in the Bible.

1033. Noah was saved through the waters of

1034. judgment. Noah and his family were saved

1035. through the waters of judgment. Though

1036. they weren't saved by the water, who who

1037. were they saved by? They were saved by

  1038. God

1039. through the waters. They were saved out

1040. of the judgment waters. That's what

1041. that's what the waters pictured. The

1042. waters pictured judgment and they were

1043. saved out of that by the grace of God.

1044. They were saved through the waters

1045. and Noah and his family came up out of

1046. the water as it were.

1047. And then you have Moses and the picture

1048. of Moses when he was in this basket

1049. which is tea which is another word for

1050. the ark. He was put in this small ark.

1051. That's the word in the scripture. He was

1052. put in a small ark. And what happened?

1053. He was rescued out of the waters, the

1054. judgment waters. When all the other

1055. babies were killed, he was rescued up

1056. out of the waters. He was saved up out

1057. of the waters. And then you have God's

1058. people. What happens? God's people, they

1059. come to the Red Sea and the Red Sea is

1060. parted and the judgment waters, they

1061. they close over the Egyptians. But God's

1062. people are what? They're rescued up out

  1063. of the waters.

1064. And then you have Noah or Jonah. And

1065. Jonah, he was there in the belly of the

1066. fish in the waters for three days and

1067. three nights. And what happened? He was

1068. rescued up out of the waters.

1069. And all of that points forward to this

1070. moment when this guy Jesus, he walks up

1071. to John and says to John, "John, I want

1072. you to baptize me." John says, "No way.

1073. I'm not going to baptize you. You need

1074. to baptize me." He says, "No, you need

1075. to baptize me." It's like arguing over

1076. who's going to pay. You need to baptize

  1077. me to fulfill righteousness.

1078. We need to complete this picture

1079. because one day I'm going to be buried

1080. and on the third day I'm going to rise

1081. again so that those who believe in me

1082. they might be buried and they might rise

  1083. again.

1084. And all of that story points to our

1085. immersion story. In Romans chapter 6:3

  1086. it says this.

1087. Do you not know that all of us who have

1088. been baptized into Christ Jesus were

  1089. baptized into his death?

1090. We were buried therefore with him by

1091. baptism into death in order that just as

1092. Christ was raised from the dead by the

1093. glory of God the Father, we might too

1094. walk with him in newness of life.

1095. Baptism is a sign and a symbol of that

1096. new creation that we have in Christ. We

1097. died with him in the waters of baptism

1098. and we were raised up again with him to

1099. newness of life. Here's what should have

1100. happened with you at your baptism. Can I

1101. tell you what should have happened with

  1102. you at your baptism?

1103. You should have been put in the water

1104. and you should have been left there.

  1105. You should have been

1106. Just like all of the other people in the

  1107. time of Noah

  1108. left in the water.

  1109. Just like the Egyptians

  1110. left in the water.

1111. But what happened? What's the picture?

1112. We were rescued up out of the judgment

1113. waters just like our Jesus was.

1114. We're brought up to newness of life in

  1115. Christ Jesus.

1116. Baptism is beautiful. I don't see why

1117. any Christian would not ever be

  1118. baptized.

  1119. Obey him.

1120. Live for him. And when you doubt,

1121. go back to that birthert. Remember that

1122. day. Yeah, I'm in Jesus.

  1123. Let's pray together.

1124. Lord, we thank you for your word. We

1125. thank you for this time that we've had

1126. thinking about baptism. Lord, we haven't

1127. gone through all that we could have gone

1128. through in this and yet um we trust that

1129. it was enough for us in your word. So,

1130. thank you Lord for what you have done in

1131. Jesus that you are buried and on the

1132. third day you rose again. In your name,

1133. Jesus, I pray these things. Amen. What

1134. we might do instead of singing our

1135. response song, maybe we'll go straight

1136. into the Lord's supper if that's okay.

  1137. Thank John.
