  1. Well, good morning. Please take your

  2. Bibles

  3. and open them up to Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  4. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  5. That's where we will start. That's where

  6. we'll begin. Um, if you have your

  7. Bibles, you can follow along in your

  8. Bibles. I would encourage you to do

  9. that. Um, but I'll be moving quite fast

  10. through a number of different verses,

  11. and those verses will also be up on the

  12. screen for you. Um, so please begin by

  13. opening up your Bibles to Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  14. chapter 12. Let's pray and ask the Lord

  15. to help us as we look at his word

  16. together.

  17. Lord, we are thankful that we have your

  18. word in front of us and we pray once

  19. again that you will speak. We pray once

  20. again that you will teach us

  21. this morning as we look at the Bible in

  22. a different way. As we look at a topic

  23. and we teach through that topic, help

  24. us. Help us learn and help us learn for

  25. the glory of your name. We want to be a

  26. people who loves you and we want to be a

  27. people who honors you. And we ask Lord

  28. Jesus that you will speak. I thank you

  29. so much for that song that we have just

  30. sung. Lord, if it was up to us to hold

  31. ourselves, we would be lost. But we

  32. praise your name that you hold us fast,

  33. you hold us tightly, and you never let

  34. go. For that we praise you. Thank you,

  35. Lord. In your precious name, Jesus, we

  36. pray all of these things. Amen. Amen.

  37. So, Romans 12 is where we are going to

  38. begin. And what we're are continuing to

  39. do in this series is ask the question

  40. why. Why do we as a church do the things

  41. that we do? And the really important

  42. reason we are asking that question why

  43. is because sometimes churches get into a

  44. rut and just start doing things. And we

  45. start doing things because it's just

  46. tradition and we forgot why we began

  47. them in the first place. And so we as a

  48. church should always know why we are

  49. doing what we are doing and we should

  50. always be directed by the scriptures.

  51. So this morning we are asking the

  52. question why in relation to membership.

  53. Why do we as a church have and why do we

  54. as a church practice membership?

  55. Why do we do that?

  56. my first members meeting.

  57. I was 18 years old

  58. and I went into the members meeting.

  59. It's kind of embarrassing to say, but I

  60. went into the members meeting and I sat

  61. down.

  62. I was 18 and I was a bit grumpy and I

  63. was a bit cheeky and all th those kind

  64. of things. And I sat in the meeting and

  65. I started chatting with someone. They

  66. were talking to me and I can't remember

  67. what question they asked me. I can't

  68. even remember the conversation we had,

  69. but I remember what I said to that

  70. person.

  71. I said to them,

  72. well, I don't believe that membership is

  73. biblical anyway.

  74. So, here I am sitting in my first

  75. members meeting. I'm 18 years old and I

  76. want to make sure that someone in the

  77. meeting knows I actually don't think

  78. this is biblical. Anyway,

  79. I was a cheeky pup.

  80. And then you would say, "Well, Shane,

  81. why did you do it? Why did you become a

  82. member anyway?" Well, I became a member

  83. for two reasons at that point. I became

  84. a member because I respected the leaders

  85. in the church, and I knew I needed to

  86. follow the directions of the leaders in

  87. the church. So, it's like, well, if they

  88. have it, I'll obey it. And then they

  89. also gave me reasons to believe that we

  90. couldn't actually be biblical as a

  91. church if we didn't have this. And so

  92. that was the reason. But I still wanted

  93. to tell someone I don't think it's

  94. biblical.

  95. I've since changed my view. Uh and I'm

  96. thankful for that. But I understand and

  97. realize and recognize that people here

  98. this morning, you might have different

  99. opinions on that. And that is okay.

  100. There is probably the person visiting

  101. this morning that has never heard of

  102. membership.

  103. And for you, I would say, I have been

  104. there. I don't have a clue what this

  105. person is talking about. That's okay. I

  106. just encourage you and say this is a

  107. different kind of sermon this morning

  108. and you are listening to kind of an

  109. in-house conversation and hopefully you

  110. will get to learn a bit of what this

  111. church is about. So there's the person

  112. who's visiting that has never heard.

  113. Then there is the person probably here

  114. that kind of says,"I actually don't

  115. think it's it's biblical. I don't see it

  116. in the Bible." And I've been there. And

  117. I think that's okay. There are people as

  118. well who are probably in this room

  119. saying, "It's probably biblical. I guess

  120. it is. I'm just going to believe and

  121. trust them anyway. Don't ask me

  122. questions about why I think it's

  123. biblical, but I'm just going to go along

  124. with it." And then there is others who

  125. are totally convinced that this is what

  126. we should be doing. And I reckon there's

  127. probably each of those people in this

  128. room this morning. And I just want to

  129. encourage you and say I've been in all

  130. of those places. And I don't expect us

  131. all to be in the exact same place with

  132. all of what I say this morning. But what

  133. I want to encourage you is to bring you

  134. to the place at least where you say, "I

  135. think this is biblical." And if I don't

  136. get you there, I think I could get you

  137. to the place where you might at least

  138. say we can't be biblical without this.

  139. And if I don't get you there, at least

  140. you might say that at least they're

  141. trying to be biblical in doing this.

  142. That's my hope this morning.

  143. So why church membership? First thing I

  144. want to say is this. People are called

  145. members. That's the first reason for

  146. church membership. People are called

  147. members. People are called members in

  148. the Bible. Those who believe and trust

  149. in Jesus are actually called members.

  150. The word members is a very good and

  151. biblical word to use. It's not a wrong

  152. word. It's a really good word to use.

  153. And here's why I say that. Romans 12:4

    Romans 12:4

  154. says this. Romans 12:4, look at it. For

    Romans 12:4

  155. as in one body, we have many members.

  156. And the members do not all have the same

  157. function, so we though many are one body

  158. in Christ and individually members of

  159. one another. Paul is talking to the

  160. church at Rome and he's saying you're

  161. you're all part of one body and you're

  162. you're different members of that body.

  163. You have different body parts. And what

  164. Paul was arguing is you're in the one

  165. body. You're in the one house of God and

  166. each one has different gifts in the

  167. house of God. Each one is a different

  168. member and each one functions as part of

  169. the body. Yes, you are one body, but you

  170. have a hand and you have feet and you

  171. have all sorts of things in order to

  172. serve that body. We are all members of

  173. the one body. That's how he is talking

  174. to the church. So the word member, we'll

  175. get to the concept of membership in this

  176. as well, but we'll talk about the word

  177. member, it is biblical. But then we

  178. understand that what happens with the

  179. church is so interesting. Whenever you

  180. use a common word that's used about

  181. anything in this world, but you attach

  182. it to the church, what happens? It

  183. suddenly becomes really weird, doesn't

  184. it? You take words and you attach it to

  185. the church and then it suddenly becomes

  186. really weird. So you might look at a

  187. group of people and you might say, you

  188. know, that person is is a really good

  189. leader in that group in that team. That

  190. person is a really good leader in that

  191. team. But then you say leaders in the

  192. church and suddenly people start to get

  193. scared and say, "Oh, that's kind of

  194. weird. Leaders." Oh, who's the leader of

  195. this church? Kind of sounds weird and

  196. strange when you attach it to the

  197. church. People look at it that way. Or

  198. you mention money and people might say,

  199. "I'm giving money to charity." And

  200. that's fine. But as soon as you talk

  201. about giving money to the church,

  202. that is actually a registered charity.

  203. As soon as you start talking about

  204. giving to the money to the church,

  205. people start going, "Well, that's weird.

  206. Are they all after your money?"

  207. Suddenly, it becomes strange. So, it is

  208. with members. There's there's members in

  209. every single club on this island. Loads

  210. of people might attend the club, but

  211. there are those who are like committed

  212. to it that are members of it. Seems

  213. normal. No one accuses them of anything.

  214. But as soon as you say members in the

  215. church, oh some kind of secret club or

  216. something going on and it becomes kind

  217. of strange and weird.

  218. But our concern should never be how it

  219. sounds by using the word. Our concern is

  220. is the word biblical and it actually is.

  221. The word member is biblical. And so we

  222. shouldn't be shy of using that word

  223. membership. And as we think of the word

  224. membership, I think it is helpful to

  225. think of membership in two ways.

  226. You are a member of the church in two

  227. ways. And how we can think about it is

  228. kind of like this. When a baby is born

  229. into this world, when a baby is born

  230. into this world, they become a member of

  231. the human race.

  232. The human race that was in the past, the

  233. human race that is in the present, and

  234. the human race that is in the future.

  235. They become a a human being. They're

  236. part of the human race. And that human

  237. being has general responsibilities to

  238. humanity, to everyone in the world.

  239. General responsibilities.

  240. But so that human being has like a

  241. universal family, let's say. But then it

  242. is also true that when that baby is

  243. born, that baby doesn't just have a

  244. universal family. That baby has a local

  245. family, an immediate family.

  246. And that baby gets that birth cert like

  247. we were talking about that confirms

  248. publicly that they are part of that

  249. local family.

  250. And they don't have just general

  251. responsibilities to the universal family

  252. but they have specific significant

  253. intimate responsibilities to their local

  254. family.

  255. And so it is with the church. The moment

  256. you are born again, the moment you have

  257. trusted in the Lord Jesus is the very

  258. moment that you become part of the

  259. universal church.

  260. You become part of the church that was

  261. past, present, and future. And you have

  262. responsibilities to your brothers and

  263. sisters all around the world. You're a

  264. family. You're part of the universal,

  265. the global church all around the world.

  266. You pray for them. You care for them all

  267. generally. you give may maybe you give

  268. money towards them generally and so when

  269. the scripture says church sometimes it's

  270. talking about the global church or the

  271. universal church so look at Matthew

    Matthew 16:18

  272. 16:18 in Matthew 16:18 it says this and

    Matthew 16:18

  273. I tell you Jesus says and I tell you you

  274. are Peter and on this rock I will build

  275. my church and the gates of hell shall

  276. not prevail against it. Jesus is the one

  277. who builds the church, the global

  278. church, the universal church. And the

  279. global church is on the attack. And and

  280. you know what it says about the verse?

  281. The gates of hell. Hell is defensive. It

  282. has gates. And guess what? The kingdom

  283. is going to blow through those gates. I

  284. will build my church and the gates of

  285. hell will not prevail. And then he also

  286. talks about the universal church. Paul

  287. when he's writing to the Ephesians in

  288. Ephesians chapter 5 verse 25 he's

    Ephesians 5:25

  289. actually talking to husbands and he says

  290. this

  291. husbands love your wives as Christ loved

  292. the church and gave himself up for her.

  293. The encouragement to husbands is husband

  294. love your wives in what way? As Christ

  295. loved the church. Not one specific local

  296. church. all of the church, the global

  297. church, the universal church. Christ

  298. gave himself up for the universal

  299. church. So when we think of members, you

  300. should to think of members in relation

  301. to the whole church, the total church.

  302. And the moment you believe and trust in

  303. Jesus, the moment you're born again, you

  304. are a member of that church. Brothers

  305. and sisters, you're you're part of that.

  306. You're part of that family. But then

  307. there is the local church.

  308. The local church that you should be part

  309. of, that you should be added to, that

  310. you should commit to, that you should

  311. specifically love. You can't love every

  312. Christian everywhere in the same way as

  313. you can love a local particular church

  314. that you have decided to be a part of.

  315. And so Paul in writing to the local

  316. church in Corenth, look at 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 12:12

  317. 12:12. It says this. Paul says to them,

  318. to this church, just as the body is one

  319. and has many members and all are members

  320. of the body, though many are one body.

  321. So it is with Christ. For in one spirit

  322. we were all baptized into the one body.

  323. Jews are Greeks, slaves are free, and

  324. all were made to drink of the one

  325. spirit. Again, he uses that word

  326. members. It is a really good word to use

  327. of the church. We are to be members as

  328. part of one body. He's talking to this

  329. local church. And he gives them

  330. instructions as a body. We'll look at

  331. this next week when we look at the

  332. Lord's supper. But when he's writing to

  333. the Corinthians, he corrects their

  334. practice of the Lord's supper because he

  335. assumes they are a body. They are a

  336. church. He says to them, when you gather

  337. as a body, as a church, here's what you

  338. are to do. And so, they have become

  339. members of this one body. They all have

  340. different gifts. And how did they become

  341. members of that one body? Well, the

  342. scripture says in verse 13, they were

  343. all baptized into that body. And so, it

  344. was baptism, spiritual baptism, um,

  345. physical water baptism. That is the

  346. baptism that Jesus gave and that

  347. connects them to the body that is the

  348. church. So that's the word member. It is

  349. biblical. But then you might say, "Oh,

  350. well the word is biblical, but is the is

  351. the concept biblical? Is the idea of it

  352. biblical membership?"

  353. Well, to that I would say

  354. um let me put it this way. Do you think

  355. that the hypothatical union is biblical?

  356. What is that?

  357. It's not written in the Bible.

  358. But I do believe it's biblical.

  359. It is really biblical

  360. because in that hypothatic union, we

  361. believe that Jesus is fully God and

  362. fully man.

  363. We believe that two natures, one person.

  364. But there is not a verse in the Bible

  365. that says, "Thou shalt believe the

  366. hypothetical union." No. What happens is

  367. we gather all these verses together in

  368. scripture. We gather those verses

  369. together. And as we pull those verses

  370. together, we believe Jesus is fully God

  371. and he is fully man. And I'm going to

  372. believe this.

  373. Do you believe that the trinity is

  374. biblical?

  375. You should.

  376. But if you look for the word trinity,

  377. you are not going to find it in the

  378. Bible.

  379. But the concept it is there. If you

  380. gather all the verses together

  381. in the Bible, you must believe in God

  382. the Father, God the Son, God the Holy

  383. Spirit.

  384. We sang blessed trinity. That is what

  385. Christians believe, but we believe it on

  386. the basis of this. Not one single verse,

  387. but as we grab the verses together, we

  388. believe in the context. And so it is

  389. with membership. I believe we have the

  390. word member. We actually have the word

  391. there in scripture. But then as you look

  392. at the verses and you gather them all

  393. together, I believe you will see that

  394. the concept too is there.

  395. And so that brings us to our second

  396. point. People are not only called

  397. members, but people are added as

  398. members. People are added to the church

  399. as members. So as we look at this

  400. concept and bring the verses together,

  401. you will see in scripture that it is

  402. clear that people are added to the

  403. church. Acts 1:14. Look at this. As the

    Acts 1:14

  404. church first gathered together, it says

  405. this. All these with one accord were

  406. devoting themselves to prayer together

  407. with the women and Mary the mother of

  408. Jesus and his brothers. In those days

  409. Peter stood up among the brothers. The

  410. company of the persons was in all about

  411. 120. So here's what happened. The church

  412. they counted their numbers. They counted

  413. the specific members who are part of the

  414. church which means they counted 120 and

  415. they knew this 120 are in and the others

  416. therefore are out. They counted that

  417. number and then Peter began to preach

  418. and he stood up and he said repent of

  419. your sins, believe and be baptized. And

  420. after people repented of their sins,

  421. they believed and they were baptized.

  422. Those people were then added to that

  423. specific number. Acts 2:41 says this,

    Acts 2:41

  424. "For those who received his word were

  425. baptized, and there were added that day

  426. about 3,000 souls."

  427. So there was members, 120. They

  428. believed, they were baptized, they were

  429. added. And then Peter preached and those

  430. received his word. In other words, they

  431. believed the word of the gospel. And

  432. when they believed the word of the

  433. gospel, what happened? They were added

  434. as members to the body that is the

  435. church, 3,000 souls. And then it

  436. continues on. The Lord just kept adding

  437. to their number. Acts 2 46. And day by

  438. day, attending the temple together, and

  439. breaking bread in their homes, they

  440. received their food with glad and

  441. generous hearts, praising God, and

  442. having favor with all people. And the

  443. Lord added to their number day by day

  444. those who were being saved. You see very

  445. early on these these uh people that were

  446. part of the body that were part of the

  447. church. They believed they were

  448. baptized. They were added to the church.

  449. They knew who each other were. And so

  450. what they did was they cared for each

  451. other. They had each other in the homes.

  452. They broke bread together. They did life

  453. together. They knew who was who. They

  454. knew, yes, of course, we're all brothers

  455. and sisters. Paul writes to the church

  456. in Rome that he never met and calls them

  457. brothers and sisters. We all have the

  458. universal church. Were all part of that

  459. family. But there is a specific family

  460. that they were devoted to. And again,

  461. the number increased in Acts 4:4. It

    Acts 4:4

  462. says this, "But many of those who had

  463. heard the word believed,

  464. and the number of men came to about

  465. 5,000."

  466. Now, it counts the men specifically, and

  467. you should know this. In the in the

  468. feeding of the 5,000, one of the ways

  469. they would count back in the day is the

  470. feeding of the 5,000 was actually

  471. probably the feeding of the 20,000. What

  472. they were doing was they were counting

  473. the men. They weren't counting the women

  474. and the children. And so, this was the

  475. way they count. But here is the reality.

  476. The church counted. The church knew who

  477. believed. The church knew who was

  478. baptized. And the church knew who was

  479. added to their number. What I want to

  480. say is this as a church is that you

  481. should understand

  482. that the pattern was this. No gaps.

  483. Someone believed,

  484. they were baptized and then they were

  485. added to the church. There were no gaps.

  486. What I think has happened in our

  487. tradition, in our church specifically

  488. and churches like ours, is somehow we've

  489. inserted gaps.

  490. People believe

  491. and then we wait

  492. for months, maybe years, whatever, until

  493. I don't know what, maybe they get mature

  494. or whatever. And then they get baptized.

  495. And then we wait again for another while

  496. and whatever. And then finally when

  497. they've really made it, they get added

  498. to the church. Being sarcastic there.

  499. They're added to the church.

  500. But the biblical pattern seems to be

  501. that there was no gaps. People believed,

  502. they were baptized, they were added to

  503. the church. Now, I don't say that to

  504. condemn any church or condemn any one

  505. individual.

  506. I understand why people would actually

  507. wait because each one of those things is

  508. significant.

  509. I understand that someone might want to

  510. um hold to believers baptism so much

  511. that that we might wait and and ensure

  512. that the person who believes is actually

  513. being baptized. I get that. But the

  514. pattern seems to be that there are no

  515. gaps.

  516. So I think for us as a church going

  517. forward there probably should be no gaps

  518. and we haven't always practiced it that

  519. way. We're not a perfect church but it

  520. is good to look at the word of God and

  521. say are we doing it right? And this was

  522. the principle of the reformation. The

  523. principle of the reformation was this.

  524. We will always be reforming.

  525. We will always be reforming. And that

  526. didn't mean, hey, we're just going to

  527. change every single day. Let's just

  528. change it up a little bit. That's not

  529. what they meant. The reformers meant

  530. this. We will always be reforming

  531. according to the scriptures because they

  532. knew very cleverly they knew this. The

  533. scriptures never change. But here's what

  534. happens. People do. And so suddenly what

  535. happens when a church gathers together,

  536. they go, "Oh, this might be practical."

  537. They have the biblical practice. And

  538. then they say, "This might be practical.

  539. Maybe this might be practical. This

  540. might be practical. This might be." And

  541. they keep adding on and suddenly they're

  542. doing this practice that has really

  543. divorced away from what the scripture

  544. says. And so we as a church, we want to

  545. be always reforming.

  546. What does the Bible say? And let's do

  547. that.

  548. So going forward as a church as we've

  549. chatted as elders about this we think

  550. simply put people should believe

  551. they should be baptized soon afterwards

  552. and they should be baptized into the

  553. church added to the church. We're going

  554. to talk to the members of the church

  555. about how we we might do this even

  556. practically. But you can see that's the

  557. pattern of scripture and that's where we

  558. want to go. So people were called

  559. members. People were added as members.

  560. But then the difficult reality is this.

  561. People were also removed from the church

  562. as members. This was a biblical

  563. practice. Now the positive side is

  564. really good to talk about. It's really

  565. fun to talk about. People believe,

  566. they're baptized, they're added. I mean,

  567. imagine being part of the church at that

  568. time, lads. We have 120 seats. Amazing.

  569. Amazing. 120 seats. Next Sunday, 3,000

  570. seats. Next Sunday, 5,000 seats. And

  571. that's just for the men. Like, what

  572. would it have been like to be part of

  573. that church? Just growing and growing

  574. and growing and growing and growing. And

  575. it's so good when people are believing

  576. and being baptized and added to the

  577. church. That's really good.

  578. But there is also a part where the

  579. church is not only given authority to

  580. add people into the church. But Jesus

  581. gave the church authority to remove

  582. people from the church.

  583. Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and

  584. earth has been given unto me. Go

  585. therefore and baptize." Jesus gave the

  586. church the authority to baptize. But he

  587. also gave people the church the

  588. authority to remove. And we see this in

  589. Matthew 18. Look at Matthew 18

    Matthew 18:15

  590. verse 15.

  591. These are the words of Jesus. And how

  592. does he instruct us? He says these

  593. words.

  594. If your brother sins against you,

  595. go and tell him his fault before you

  596. between you and him alone. If he listens

  597. to you, you have gained your brother.

  598. But if he does not listen, take one or

  599. two others along with you, that every

  600. charge may be established by evidence of

  601. one or two or three witnesses. And if he

  602. refuses to listen to them, tell it to

  603. the church. And if he refuses even to

  604. listen to the church,

  605. let him be to you as a gentile and a tax

  606. collector.

  607. This is what people will traditionally

  608. call church discipline or what I would

  609. like to call church restoration. There

  610. is a key word that is repeated

  611. throughout these verses. The word is

  612. listen.

  613. The goal in all of this is you want your

  614. brother and sister or sister who is

  615. caught in sin. Your desire is that they

  616. listen.

  617. Your desire, your hope is that they see

  618. their sin and repent and turn back to

  619. Jesus. Your hope is that they will

  620. listen to you. The goal is restoration.

  621. And the pattern is if you see sin in

  622. another person who's a member in the

  623. church, the pattern is this. You would

  624. go to them and you would tell them their

  625. sin and then it would just be solved

  626. immediately. The pattern isn't that you

  627. would go immediately to the elders and

  628. they'll sort it out. The pattern is

  629. actually that as brothers and sisters,

  630. we might help one another live for

  631. Jesus. I want people who see my sin to

  632. help me live for Jesus. I want them to

  633. point that out because I'm not always

  634. going to see my sin. I, Shane Dean, have

  635. blind spots. Do you? I bet you do.

  636. And you need people to point that out to

  637. you. And so this is a really good and

  638. loving thing to do. It is a loving thing

  639. to discipline each other. That's the

  640. point in in Hebrews that is made of of

  641. the father who who loves his child. In

  642. discipline, the father shows love to the

  643. child.

  644. And so it is with this in church

  645. discipline that not only are people

  646. added to the church, but they're to be

  647. removed from the church. So if this

  648. biblical practice is going to happen,

  649. then what needs to happen in order for

  650. that to take place? Well, at some point

  651. there has to be a gathering of some

  652. people that are called the church. And

  653. they have to gather together and hear

  654. about this person. If it's finally

  655. brought to the church, they need to hear

  656. about this person. And they as a group

  657. need to decide.

  658. And I don't think you can do that unless

  659. you know who is part of the church and

  660. who is out of the church. You can't you

  661. can't remove someone from the church who

  662. has never been added to the church. It's

  663. hard to do this practice without church

  664. membership. And we're called to do it.

  665. So there needs to be some kind of

  666. meeting that happens. And we call those

  667. members meetings.

  668. And in the members meetings, you get to

  669. add people to the church. But there also

  670. might be cases where you remove people

  671. from the church. And there are unique

  672. cases that's that's if things go well,

  673. it's those steps. But if things go

  674. really badly, there's kind of like the

  675. nuclear button. There's the red button

  676. button that you need to press. And this

  677. happened in the church at Corenth. Look

  678. at uh 1 Corinthians 5:es 1:2.

  679. It says this. It is actually being

  680. reported amongst you that there is

  681. sexual immorality among you and a kind

  682. that is not even tolerated amongst the

  683. pagans. For as a man has his for a man

  684. has his father's wife and you are

  685. arrogant.

  686. Ought you not rather mourn. Let him who

  687. has done this be removed from among you.

  688. So the typical case in church discipline

  689. or church correction or church

  690. restoration is this. You would see

  691. someone sin and one person would go and

  692. it would be solved. And if it's not then

  693. two or three. And if it's still not if

  694. they're not repenting then the church.

  695. And if they're not repenting in the

  696. church then they're to be removed.

  697. But there might be a case where the sin

  698. is so bad, it is so grievous

  699. that the elders may lead the church to

  700. say, you know what, this person needs to

  701. be removed. And this is the case. And

  702. you cannot be removed from something

  703. that you've not been added to. And so

  704. you see as you grab all these verses

  705. together,

  706. membership, this concept is assumed that

  707. people are added to the church and

  708. they're also removed from the church.

  709. And that is the church's decision. It's

  710. not an individual's decision. And that

  711. brings us to the next point. Point four.

  712. People make decisions as members. People

  713. make decisions as members. I was reading

  714. a Wall Street Journal article um the

  715. other day. It was about decision

  716. fatigue.

  717. I think usually young parents just get

  718. decision fatigue. I just don't want to,

  719. you know, have you ever had those days.

  720. I don't want to decide anything.

  721. I don't want to decide anything. Leave

  722. me alone. I've made enough decisions.

  723. The reason you feel that is because

  724. according to this article, apparently we

  725. make about 35,000

  726. decisions each day.

  727. Small decisions, big decisions, you

  728. know, and if you think about it, if you

  729. kind of ceue them all up, every single

  730. little thing you do is a decision. So

  731. part of being a human being is to make

  732. decisions. Part of being part of

  733. humanity is to make decisions. And guess

  734. what? The church has to make decisions.

  735. It's part of being human and it's part

  736. of being a church. And every single

  737. church has to decide how are we going to

  738. make these decisions? Is that guy going

  739. to make it? Is she going to make it? Is

  740. he going to make it? Are we going to

  741. make it as a group? Who is going to make

  742. these decisions? What time do we meet?

  743. 10:00, 11:00, 12:00? How many seats do

  744. we point out? Do we have curtains? No

  745. curtains? Do we face this way or that

  746. way or whatever way? Do we meet in this

  747. building or that building? Do we pay

  748. this rent or that rent? There's loads of

  749. decisions that the church has to make.

  750. So how does the church make those

  751. decisions?

  752. I think it is in and through church

  753. membership.

  754. The church gets to make wonderful

  755. decisions

  756. as church members. And the wonderful

  757. decisions is adding people to the

  758. church. That's a wonderful decision. The

  759. church has to make difficult decisions.

  760. that is removing people from the church.

  761. But that's the church's job. It's not

  762. one individual's job. It's given that

  763. authority is given to the church. And

  764. you see that in in Matthew 18 verse 18

    Matthew 18:18

  765. at the end of the verses on church

  766. discipline. It talks about making these

  767. difficult decisions. And you look at

  768. Matthew 18, it says this, "Truly I say

  769. to you, whatever you bind on earth shall

  770. be bound in heaven, and whatever you

  771. loose on earth shall be loosed in

  772. heaven." Again I say to you, if two of

  773. you agree on earth about anything, it

  774. shall be done for them by my father. And

  775. then he says, I left out these verses.

  776. And then he says, wherever two or three

  777. are gathered, there I am in the midst.

  778. We say those verses in general. Wherever

  779. two or three are gathered, Jesus is

  780. there. He absolutely is. We can believe

  781. that. But Jesus actually says this in

  782. the context of church discipline.

  783. When two or three are gathered and when

  784. you are making the decision to remove

  785. people from the church,

  786. there I am with you in the midst. I

  787. won't leave you alone. So the church has

  788. to make wonderful decisions. The church

  789. has to make difficult decisions. But the

  790. early church also had to make practical

  791. decisions. Acts chapter 6 verse one.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  792. Look at these verses. Actsapter 6:1. The

  793. Lord was adding to their number. Those

  794. who believed, they were baptized, they

  795. were added to their number, thousands of

  796. people. And then they come up against a

  797. practical problem. And it says this,

  798. "Now in these days when the disciples

  799. were increasing in number, they ke the

  800. Lord just kept adding to their number. A

  801. complaint came a complaint by the

  802. Hellenists arose against the Hebrews

  803. because their widows were being

  804. neglected in the daily distribution. And

  805. the twel summoned the full number of

  806. disciples and said, "It is not right

  807. that we should give up preaching the

  808. word of God to serve tables. Therefore,

  809. brothers, pick out from among you seven

  810. men of good repute, full of the spirit

  811. and of wisdom who will uh whom we will

  812. appoint to this duty. But we will devote

  813. ourselves to prayer and to the ministry

  814. of the word." So this group that is the

  815. body that is the church who believed who

  816. were baptized who were added to the

  817. church this massive group of the church

  818. they now have a very serious problem the

  819. w the women and the widows are being

  820. neglected from the distribution they

  821. don't have food so how do they solve the

  822. problem apostles say to the church in

  823. verse three brothers you pick out from

  824. among yourselves

  825. you make this practical decision

  826. you think if there's Anybody who should

  827. make the decision here, it should be the

  828. apostles.

  829. I mean, surely they're the ones with the

  830. authority. But no, the authority is

  831. being given over to the church to make

  832. this practical decision. It is a

  833. decision of the church. And so what we

  834. realize with churches is this. Every

  835. single church has to make decisions.

  836. And churches will look at it in

  837. different ways.

  838. But I would suggest to you the only way

  839. that we can make these types of

  840. decisions is if we have church

  841. membership where people say and I would

  842. encourage you to ask questions of the

  843. elders uh in this church if you have

  844. questions but I'd also encourage you to

  845. to this on the 15th of February we have

  846. a membership class where you can ask all

  847. the questions you want. Steve will give

  848. you all of the perfect answers that you

  849. need. In fact, I used some of his notes

  850. from the class for this morning. Uh, so

  851. yeah, copyright to him. Um, but yeah,

  852. I'd encourage you on the 15th of

  853. February, do please go and attend even

  854. if even and you're not committing to

  855. anything. You're just asking the

  856. questions and we would encourage you to

  857. do that.

  858. And when we're making these decisions as

  859. a church, as members,

  860. these are not just decisions that the

  861. whole body makes. These are decisions

  862. that are elderled decisions. That brings

  863. us to the fifth point. People are

  864. pastored as members.

  865. People are pastored as members. So

  866. people not only make decisions as

  867. members, but people are pastored as

  868. members. It's interesting. Paul writes

  869. to Timothy

  870. and it says to Timothy but then at the

  871. end of the letter he says grace be with

  872. you all as in plural. So grace be with

  873. everyone. Meaning yes, he's writing to

  874. Timothy, but he knows that the church is

  875. listening. And Paul, he gives

  876. instructions to the church as to what

  877. elders are to look like. And he gives

  878. them these instructions that elders are

  879. to be above reproach, husband of one

  880. wife, they're to be soberminded,

  881. self-controlled, whatever. So when

  882. you're making a decision about the

  883. elders in the church, guess who makes

  884. that decision? The church decides from

  885. among them who meets the qualifications

  886. of the elder. And when the church

  887. decides who meets the qualification of

  888. the elder, there's responsibilities that

  889. the elder has to the members. And

  890. there's responsibilities that the member

  891. has to the elder.

  892. And those responsibilities are

  893. highlighted in Hebrews 13:17.

    Hebrews 13:17

  894. Look at this. This helps us think about

  895. membership and why we do it. Hebrews 13

  896. verse17.

  897. This is awkward to read, but it is God's

  898. word. So I will read it. Obey your

  899. leaders and submit to them, for they are

  900. keeping watch over your souls as those

  901. who will have to give an account. Let

  902. them do this with joy and not with

  903. groaning, for that would be of no

  904. advantage to you.

  905. There's responsibilities there. There's

  906. responsibilities of the leader and there

  907. are responsibilities of the member.

  908. The responsibility of the leader is

  909. quite significant.

  910. There is one day

  911. that I will stand before God, my maker,

  912. and I will have to give an account for

  913. me.

  914. And then as a father, I will have to

  915. stand before my maker and give an

  916. account for my family.

  917. And then as an elder I will have to

  918. stand and give an account for the souls

  919. that God has entrusted to my care as a

  920. pastor.

  921. That is weighty.

  922. That's what I'm called to do.

  923. That's my responsibility

  924. to love and to care for the people God

  925. has put under my care.

  926. Now the question is who do I give where

  927. are you to obey them or maybe you're to

  928. obey every elder in cork or may who are

  929. you to obey?

  930. You're to obey and submit to and follow

  931. to the leadership of the church that you

  932. have committed to of the elders that you

  933. have committed to.

  934. And I say all that remembering

  935. that as a pastor and elder in Passage

  936. Baptist Church, whoever walks through

  937. that door,

  938. they should feel loved,

  939. cared for, welcomed.

  940. Whether they are a believer, not a

  941. believer, whether they are a member, not

  942. a member, we as elders when we meet, we

  943. pray for everybody who comes into this

  944. room. We do.

  945. We pray for believer non-believer.

  946. We pray for member non-member. We want

  947. to care for member non-member

  948. but we believe that we have a particular

  949. responsibility to those who have said

  950. this is my church.

  951. So that helps us in why we have this

  952. thing that we call membership.

  953. My last point is this.

  954. People are not only pastored as members,

  955. but they are cared for as members.

  956. What you're committing to when you

  957. believe, when you're baptized, when

  958. you're added to the church, you're

  959. committing to caring specifically

  960. for the people within that local church.

  961. That's what you're committing to. In

  962. Acts chapter 2 42, it says this about

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  963. the early church. And they devoted

  964. themselves to the apostles teaching and

  965. to the fellowship and to the breaking of

  966. bread and to prayer. Those who believed,

  967. those who were baptized, those who were

  968. added to the church. How would you

  969. describe them? They were devoted.

  970. They were devoted.

  971. They were devoted to the Lord and they

  972. were devoted to one another. They were

  973. devoted to teaching. They were devoted

  974. to fellowship. I am going to devote

  975. myself to meeting up with these people

  976. in their homes, breaking bread together.

  977. They weren't meeting like once or twice

  978. a week. They were actually meeting

  979. daily. They were devoted

  980. to the breaking of prayers. They were

  981. devoted to prayer.

  982. And so my question to you, and I'm going

  983. to ask this specifically of the members

  984. because this is what you've committed

  985. to. Are you devoted?

  986. Are you devoted to the people in this

  987. church?

  988. Are you devoted to caring for one

  989. another, bearing one another's burdens,

  990. loving one another well,

  991. praying for one another?

  992. Are you devoted?

  993. because that's what the Lord is calling

  994. you to do.

  995. And here's why I think we should do

  996. church membership.

  997. Here's the real reason I think we should

  998. do church membership is this.

  999. I want every single person in this room,

1000. I want each and every one of you, I want

1001. you to finish the race. I want you to

  1002. make it home.

1003. I want you specifically to make it home.

1004. I want you to believe and trust in

1005. Jesus. I want you to be added to this

1006. church. And I want us to commit as a

1007. church to saying we are going to help by

1008. the spirit's power. We are going to help

1009. bring everyone home. We don't want to

1010. leave anyone behind. I don't want any of

1011. you to be left behind. I want all of you

  1012. to come with me.

1013. Let's go together. Let's run this race

1014. together and finish the line. And there

1015. will be ups and there will be downs. And

1016. there will be sadnesses and there will

1017. be grievous sin. But we should commit

1018. together. Let's make it home. Let's see

1019. Jesus and let's praise him together. And

1020. when we praise him together, guess what?

1021. We will be that day with the universal

1022. church, past, present, and future

1023. worshiping and honoring the Lord. Let's

  1024. pray.

1025. Lord, we thank you for the gift of your

1026. word. And we pray, Lord, that you would

1027. help us as we think through church

1028. membership. Help us know and understand

  1029. what we're doing, what we're thinking

1030. through as we think through church

1031. membership. Lord, we want to honor you

1032. in and through your word. We want to

1033. believe. We want to be baptized. And

1034. then we want to be added to the number.

1035. Lord Jesus, help us as a church honor

1036. you and follow you and be always

1037. reforming in our thinking on the basis

1038. of what your word says. We don't tell it

1039. what to do. It tells us. So Lord, help

1040. us be obedient to your word. We pray in

  1041. your name, Jesus.
