  2. right. Well, good morning. Please take

  3. your Bibles and open them up to Job

    Job 2 chapter mention

  4. chapter 2. Please take your Bibles and

  5. open them up to Job chapter 2.

    Job 2 chapter mention

  6. It's just before Psalms, the book of

  7. Psalms, Job chapter 2.

    Job 2 chapter mention

  8. Job is 42 chapters. We will not be going

  9. through it one chapter at a time, but

  10. for these first couple of weeks it will

  11. be and then we'll be looking at bigger

  12. chunks just to let you know. Um

  13. let's pray and ask for the Lord's help

  14. as we consider his word together.

  15. Lord, we thank you, Lord Jesus, for the

  16. song uh that we just sang that our sins

  17. they are many, but your mercy is more.

  18. What a wonderful truth to sing to you

  19. and to sing to one another. What a

  20. wonderful truth to remember that we

  21. stand here because of your mercy. Thank

  22. you, Lord Jesus, for the forgiveness of

  23. sins. Thank you for new life in you.

  24. Thank you that you have promised to

  25. never leave us and never forsake us.

  26. Thank you that you have promised to be

  27. with us wherever we go. And thank you

  28. that you have promised that you are

  29. coming back again. And thank you that

  30. you have promised that one day we will

  31. be with you in eternity. And it is on

  32. that day our faith will become sight.

  33. And Lord Jesus, we cannot wait. But I

  34. thank you Lord that we get to experience

  35. your word even now in these moments on

  36. earth. Teach us. We need to hear from

  37. you. We ask that you Lord Jesus would

  38. speak for your servants are listening.

  39. Amen.

  40. Going to start this morning um not with

  41. an encouraging truth. I would love to

  42. start with an encouraging truth, but I'm

  43. going to start with what might seem as a

  44. discouraging truth, but it is a truth

  45. that we must remember.

  46. And the truth is this.

  47. Satan,

  48. he is real.

  49. And Satan,

  50. he hates you.

  51. Satan, he is real.

  52. And Satan, he hates you.

  53. And when when you open up the book of

  54. Job, you realize this truth. Yes, the

  55. Lord is present and he is sovereign over

  56. it all.

  57. But yes, Satan is real and Satan hates

  58. God's people.

  59. Now, there are two dangers when we're

  60. talking about Satan that we can slip

  61. into.

  62. The one danger is this, that we

  63. exaggerate all of Satan's works. That we

  64. think Satan is behind everything. That

  65. Satan is under every bush. That every

  66. bad thing that ever happens, it's all

  67. because of him and everything is Satan.

  68. Well, the sin in your life mightn't all

  69. be Satan. It's probably because of you.

  70. So we can have the extreme and

  71. exaggerate Satan's work, but we can also

  72. slip into another extreme. We can ignore

  73. that Satan exists and we can ignore his

  74. work. And we can ignore the fact that we

  75. are actually every single day as

  76. Christians, we are in a spiritual

  77. battle.

  78. And there is nothing more dangerous for

  79. you in your Christian faith

  80. to ignore the fact that you are every

  81. day in a battle. So that's the two

  82. extremes. We can exaggerate Satan's work

  83. and we can ignore Satan's work. But what

  84. we need to do, I think, in accordance

  85. with the scripture is recognize, simply

  86. recognize Satan is at work. not go to

  87. either of those two extremes, but

  88. understand and know that he is real and

  89. that he hates you.

  90. And it's important for us to know these

  91. things, especially in the context of

  92. suffering. Peter, when he was writing to

  93. the churches, he wrote to them in the

  94. context of suffering. And he wrote to

  95. them one of the most famous verses about

  96. the works of Satan in the context of

  97. their suffering. Notice what he says to

  98. them. You don't need to turn there, but

  99. listen. 1 Peter 5:8 says this, "Be

    1 Peter 5:8

  100. soberminded.

  101. Be watchful.

  102. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around

  103. like a roaring lion."

  104. So, in the context of their suffering,

  105. what does Peter tell them to do? to be

  106. soberminded,

  107. to be watchful,

  108. to not overexaggerate things, to not

  109. ignore things, but be steady,

  110. soberminded, and watchful for the fact

  111. that the devil prowls around like a

  112. roaring lion.

  113. We need to understand

  114. that Satan,

  115. he also has purposes

  116. in our suffering. Last week in chapter

  117. 1, we focused on the fact that the Lord

  118. has purposes in our suffering. But we

  119. also need to know that Satan has

  120. purposes in our suffering, too. What

  121. does he want for you? He wants you to

  122. fail.

  123. That's his purposes in your suffering.

  124. And so, we see this as we open up to

  125. chapter 2. We see Satan's purposes

  126. in the suffering.

  127. Job chapter 2 verse 1.

    Job 2:1

  128. Again, there was a day. I'm going to

  129. pause there just for a second just to

  130. remind us of where we were. Notice what

  131. it begins with in verse one. Again,

  132. there was a day and chapter 1. What we

  133. heard about last week was that there

  134. were two days that changed Job's life

  135. forever. There was the conversation day

  136. in heaven between the Lord and Satan

  137. when Satan was asking the Lord for

  138. permission to attack Job.

  139. And that conversation day in heaven, the

  140. Lord gave permission. And that

  141. conversation day in heaven led to a

  142. destruction day on earth

  143. where Job's life was turned upside down

  144. and he lost everything.

  145. His animals were destroyed, his servants

  146. were destroyed and his children were

  147. destroyed.

  148. And at the end of that destruction day,

  149. Job said those famous words, "The Lord

  150. gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed

  151. be the name of the Lord.

  152. And then it tells us at the end of that

  153. chapter and Job did not sin. And as you

  154. look at the story of Job, you wish it

  155. would just end there.

  156. He's gone through the worst destruction

  157. day in his life. Surely the Lord would

  158. allow it to end there.

  159. But unfortunately for Job, in chapter 2,

  160. we're going to see another conversation

  161. day in heaven, which leads to another

  162. destruction day on earth.

  163. Chapter 2 verse 1.

  164. Again, there was a day when the sons of

  165. God came to present themselves before

  166. the Lord, and Satan also came among them

  167. to present himself before the Lord. And

  168. the Lord said to Satan, "From where have

  169. you come?" And Satan answered the Lord,

  170. "From going to and fro on the earth, and

  171. from walking up and down on it." And the

  172. Lord said to Satan,

  173. "Have you considered my servant Job,

  174. that there is none like him on the

  175. earth, a blameless and upright man who

  176. who fears God and and turns away from

  177. evil, he still holds fast to his

  178. integrity. Although you incited me

  179. against him to destroy him without

  180. reason.

  181. This is the beginning of the

  182. conversation day in heaven. It is the

  183. conversation between the Lord and Satan.

  184. And as you see this conversation

  185. happening between the Lord and Satan,

  186. you see that the conversation is is

  187. pretty much the same as what happened

  188. before. The council of the sons of God,

  189. the angelic beings come before the Lord.

  190. Satan answers into the present into the

  191. into his presence.

  192. The Lord asks him the question from

  193. where have you come? He says, I've been

  194. going to and fro the earth. What was

  195. Satan doing? I assume Satan was doing

  196. what he always does. He prowls around

  197. like a roaring lion seeking those whom

  198. he may devour. And the Lord once again,

  199. not just the first time, but for the

  200. second time, the Lord brings up Job

  201. and says, "Have you considered my

  202. servant?" And he repeats again the

  203. characteristics of Job. He's blameless.

  204. He's upright. He is one who fears God.

  205. And so for Job, he fears God in this

  206. way. He sees evil. He might be tempted

  207. by evil, but this godly man, every time

  208. he sees evil, every time he he's tempted

  209. by evil, he fears the Lord by turning

  210. away from

  211. evil.

  212. And so you look at this whole

  213. conversation, everything that happens,

  214. and you ask yourself, well, what's the

  215. difference between this conversation and

  216. the one in chapter 1? And one of the

  217. things that helps us as we're reading

  218. the Bible, when it seems like there's

  219. two things that are just very similar,

  220. the question you need to ask yourself is

  221. this. What's different here? It pretty

  222. much repeats it word for word from

  223. chapter 1. So what's different here?

  224. Well, what's different here is what the

  225. Lord says about Job at the end of verse

  226. three. He still holds fast his

  227. integrity.

  228. It's almost like this. The Lord,

  229. he's proud of his boy.

  230. Have you seen my son, Job?

  231. Have you seen my boy? You're you're

  232. you're you're looking across all the

  233. world. Have you seen Job?

  234. He's blameless.

  235. He's upright.

  236. He fears me.

  237. He turns away from evil. And my boy,

  238. he's lost everything. You took his

  239. animals. You took his servants. You took

  240. his children. And look at him. He still

  241. stands with integrity. He still stands

  242. for me. That's my boy.

  243. What a proud father.

  244. As he looks at Job, standing for him.

  245. though Job has lost everything.

  246. And this is part of the Lord's purposes

  247. in our suffering.

  248. See, the Lord allowed

  249. Satan to afflict Job.

  250. And the Lord knew that Job would stand.

  251. But the Lord also had great purposes in

  252. the sufferings of Job. And the purposes

  253. that we said last week were twofold.

  254. to prove his genuiness and to show off

  255. God's glory.

  256. It says this in 1 Peter chapter 1 verse

    1 Peter 1:6

  257. 6. Let me remind you of these verses. He

  258. writes to the suffering church and Peter

  259. says to them, "In this you rejoice,

  260. though now for a little while, if

  261. necessary, you have been grieved by

  262. various trials,

  263. so that the tested genuiness of your

  264. faith, more precious than gold, that

  265. perishes,

  266. though it is tested by fire, may be

  267. found to result in praise and glory and

  268. honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  269. Peter's writing to them and he's saying

  270. to them this, "Your trials are there to

  271. show you your genuiness

  272. and your trials are there to result in

  273. God's glory."

  274. And so when you look at Job

  275. and you look at all that has happened in

  276. his life, he's lost all his animals, all

  277. his servants, all his children. And yet

  278. he stands and says, "The Lord gives and

  279. the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name

  280. of the Lord." As you look at Job, you

  281. say that guy is genuine.

  282. That guy, he is a real godly man.

  283. and you look at all that goes on in his

  284. life. And then when you see that in Job,

  285. do you know what happens?

  286. You say, "Praise the Lord because the

  287. Lord has kept this man."

  288. Genuiness and glory. That's the purposes

  289. that the Lord uses. That's the Lord's

  290. purpose in our suffering.

  291. But then we also need to know while God

  292. is is sovereign over everything and he

  293. is the purpose of genuiness and glory

  294. over over all our suffering underneath

  295. that Satan also has purposes in our

  296. suffering.

  297. And you see that at the end of verse

  298. three,

  299. the Lord is speaking of his boy Job. And

  300. he says, "He still holds fast to his

  301. integrity, although you incited me

  302. against him to destroy him." That's

  303. Satan's purposes in our suffering. God's

  304. purposes in our suffering are genuineess

  305. and glory. Satan's purposes in our

  306. suffering is destruction. And this is

  307. why Satan says what he says in verse

  308. four. Then Satan answered the Lord and

  309. said, "Skin for skin,

  310. all that a man has, he will give for his

  311. life, but stretch out your hand and

  312. touch his bone and his flesh, and he

  313. will curse you to your face."

  314. And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold,

  315. he is in your hand. only spare his life.

  316. The Lord, he stands in this conversation

  317. in heaven and he says, "Have you seen

  318. Job? He's lost everything and he still

  319. loves me." And then Satan turns back and

  320. he says, "Skin for skin." Yeah, he's

  321. lost everything,

  322. but let's do this.

  323. Let's touch his body.

  324. Let's afflict his body

  325. and let's see if he's still standing

  326. after that. Let's really test if his

  327. faith is absolutely genuine. And if you

  328. allow me, Satan's saying, if you allow

  329. me

  330. touch his body, his bone and his flesh,

  331. he will curse you.

  332. And the Lord in his sovereignty

  333. says,

  334. "Yes,

  335. what is Satan hoping to do?

  336. Satan is real

  337. and Satan hates this man and Satan wants

  338. to destroy him."

  339. That's what's happening here.

  340. We need to understand this in our lives.

  341. Satan is real.

  342. Satan hates you.

  343. And Satan, he wants to destroy you.

  344. We are in a battle.

  345. And this is not this is not just like,

  346. oh, Old Testament truths, oh that just

  347. happened back in the day kind of stuff.

  348. No.

  349. When Lana read out to us Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  350. chapter 6, what did it tell us?

  351. We are in a battle.

  352. When Paul was writing to the church,

  353. what did he say to them? Stand firm

  354. because you are in a battle.

  355. And in those verses, he tal he spoke

  356. about the attack of Satan. He said this

  357. to the church in Ephesians chapter 6 11.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  358. Put on the whole armor of God that you

  359. may be able to stand against the schemes

  360. of the devil.

  361. Put on the full armor of God, church,

  362. that you may be able to stand against

  363. the schemes of the devil. And what does

  364. it mean to put on the full full armor of

  365. God? Well, he tells us in those verses

  366. to put on truth, to put on the gospel,

  367. to put on faith.

  368. This is what it means to put on the full

  369. armor of God.

  370. Let me ask you the question.

  371. Do you know and understand

  372. that you are in this battle?

  373. You should.

  374. And how you fight this battle is this,

  375. with the truth of the gospel. Putting on

  376. every day the armor of God.

  377. Reminding yourself every day of what God

  378. in Christ has done for you. And

  379. reminding your brothers and sisters

  380. every day of what God in Christ has done

  381. for you.

  382. Satan,

  383. he hates this church.

  384. He hates the fact that you are here this

  385. morning. In fact, he would love nothing

  386. more for you not to be here.

  387. And then now that you are here, do you

  388. know what he wants? To distract you. And

  389. when you leave, do you know what he

  390. wants? To take that word away from you

  391. as soon as you walk out the door. To

  392. distract you with all the things of the

  393. world. Go and love all your stuff. Go

  394. and love all your material. Forget about

  395. this Jesus.

  396. That's what he wants for you.

  397. He absolutely hates you.

  398. He hates your marriage.

  399. He hates he he he hates the fact that

  400. you have children that you're trying to

  401. raise in the Lord. He's he's seeking to

  402. kill and destroy. That's what he does.

  403. And so what do we do? Well, Paul says,

  404. "You stand firm by the power of the

  405. spirit against the schemes of the

  406. devil."

  407. He repeated it again in Ephesians

  408. chapter 6:1 16. "In all circumstances,

  409. take up the shield of faith

  410. with which you can extinguish the

  411. flaming darts of the evil one."

  412. The evil one seeks to attack us

  413. spiritually with flaming darts. And how

  414. do you defend against his attack? Faith.

  415. Faith in Christ Jesus and in what he has

  416. done.

  417. We are so tempted to just have

  418. Christianity be like the cherry on top

  419. of our week. You know, I've come, I've

  420. attended, I've done my bit. And then we

  421. walk out in life in ignorance of the

  422. fact that we are in a battle.

  423. And what I would encourage you as a

  424. church is to continue to fight by the

  425. power of the spirit against the schemes

  426. of the evil one.

  427. This is his purposes in your suffering.

  428. And so that conversation day in heaven

  429. leads to the destruction day on earth.

  430. Verse 7. So Satan went out with the

  431. permission of the Lord. Satan went out

  432. from the presence of the Lord and struck

  433. Job with a lo with loathsome swords

  434. from the sole of his foot to the crown

  435. of his head. And he took a piece of

  436. broken pottery with which to scrape

  437. himself while he sat in ashes.

  438. Skin for skin.

  439. Let me strike his body. And Satan in

  440. verse 7, he strikes his body with soores

  441. from head to toe.

  442. And they're so bad that he he breaks

  443. pottery and is literally scraping his

  444. skin.

  445. And he sits there on the ashes.

  446. This man who is the greatest man in all

  447. of the east.

  448. He had the perfect family,

  449. the perfect number of animals,

  450. the perfect home. He had life all

  451. together.

  452. And there he sits in the ashes

  453. close to death.

  454. As one writer put it, ashes to ashes,

  455. dust to dust.

  456. He's sitting there

  457. almost dead.

  458. And as he's sitting there almost dead,

  459. another conversation takes place in this

  460. book of Job, the book of conversations.

  461. And it is a conversation between a

  462. husband and a wife which happens to be

  463. the shortest conversation in the whole

  464. book.

  465. Read into that what you will.

  466. Verse nine.

  467. Then his wife said to him, "Do you still

  468. hold fast to your integrity? Curse God

  469. and die."

  470. But he said to her, "You speak as one of

  471. the foolish women would speak. Shall we

  472. receive good from God and shall we not

  473. receive evil?" In all this, Job did not

  474. sin with his lips.

  475. His wife comes to him

  476. and as if she's saying, "We've lost

  477. everything.

  478. We've lost all our animals. We've lost

  479. all our servants. We've lost all our

  480. children.

  481. And yet you still want to hold on to

  482. your little precious integrity.

  483. The very thing that the Lord commends

  484. him for is the thing that she now

  485. condemns him for.

  486. Why are you holding on to this

  487. integrity? Surely it's not worth all of

  488. this.

  489. And she actually believes in God. And

  490. she believes in God's power because she

  491. says, "Just curse God and get it over

  492. with. If you curse him, you'll die and

  493. it'll be done.

  494. Why would you hold on to this?"

  495. He rebukes her lightly and says, "You're

  496. speaking like one of the foolish women.

  497. You're not speaking the ways of wisdom.

  498. you're speaking the ways of foolishness.

  499. And then he almost repeats his words

  500. when he says, "Shall we receive good

  501. from the Lord and shall we not receive

  502. evil?"

  503. See, for Job, his life is this

  504. on his tombstone.

  505. The Lord gives,

  506. the Lord takes away.

  507. Blessed be the name of the Lord. He can

  508. take my children. He can take my stuff.

  509. I'm still going to praise him.

  510. And there he stands or sits in the ash

  511. heap. He is nothing. His body is broken.

  512. And his wife, she's not helping.

  513. And he says,

  514. "Shall we only have good from the Lord

  515. and not take the bad too?

  516. This is what the Lord has for us."

  517. And in that moment, Job sits in the

  518. worst place that he has ever been in

  519. life.

  520. And the passage says

  521. he does not sin with his lips.

  522. He closes his mouth

  523. and all around him

  524. people are speaking, "Give up. Give up.

  525. Give up."

  526. He closes his mouth.

  527. And what we learn, I think, from this in

  528. terms of Satan's purposes

  529. in our afflictions is this. Yes,

  530. Satan does have purpose in our

  531. suffering. Yes, Satan does even

  532. sometimes have power in our suffering.

  533. But we need to remember this. It is

  534. always a permitted power. He is not

  535. omnisient. He is not omnipresent.

  536. And we need to remember this.

  537. He always loses.

  538. Yes, he is powerful, but he never wins.

  539. And you look at the end of Job's life

  540. here, and he's sitting there, and he

  541. still does not sin. Can you imagine

  542. Satan looking on at that?

  543. I've tried everything,

  544. skin for skin,

  545. and he does nothing.

  546. Satan

  547. always loses.

  548. And we see this in the sufferings of

  549. Christ, don't we? Satan had purposes in

  550. the sufferings of Christ. Satan wanted

  551. to destroy Christ. Satan wanted Christ

  552. to die.

  553. We hear his purposes in John 13:27.

    John 13:27

  554. After Judas ate the piece of bread,

  555. Satan entered into Judas and Jesus told

  556. him, "What you are doing, go and do it

  557. quickly."

  558. Satan entered into Judas

  559. and Jesus says, "What you're doing, go

  560. and do it quickly." You see, Satan had a

  561. plan and a purpose to destroy Jesus.

  562. And all the while, Satan thought, "I'm

  563. winning. I'm winning. I'm winning. He's

  564. being beaten. He's being bruised. He's

  565. being scattered. I'm winning. I'm

  566. winning. I'm winning." And then over it

  567. all, God has his purposes and plans

  568. because it was on the cross that Christ

  569. won. He defeated sin and death. And on

  570. the third day, he rose again. And what

  571. did it do?

  572. It showed his genuiness

  573. and appointed to God's glory.

  574. Because on the cross, one of the

  575. centurions said as he was dead, surely

  576. this man is the son of God.

  577. And when he rose up from the grave, what

  578. did Thomas say to him?

  579. My Lord and my God.

  580. He was the real deal. And all of it

  581. resulted in the glory of God.

  582. Satan is real.

  583. Satan is powerful.

  584. But Satan never wins.

  585. So we fight knowing that the battle has

  586. already been won by our savior.

  587. And so this is Job's life.

  588. It is a conversation day in heaven

  589. followed by a destruction day on earth.

  590. Another conversation day in heaven

  591. followed by another destruction day on

  592. earth.

  593. Satan has lost.

  594. But we need to realize for Job

  595. it still hurts.

  596. It's still painful.

  597. And that's what we see in this next day

  598. in Job's life. These next days in Job's

  599. life,

  600. the conversation day in heaven followed

  601. by the destruction day on earth

  602. finishes with weeping days on the

  603. ground. Verse 11.

  604. Now when Job's three friends heard of

  605. all this evil that had come upon him,

  606. they came each from his own place.

  607. Elephas

  608. the Temonite, Bildad the Shuhite, and

  609. Zofar the Neamothite.

  610. They made an appointment together to

  611. come to show him sympathy and comfort

  612. him. And when they saw him, from a

  613. distance, they did not recognize him.

  614. And they they raised their voices and

  615. wept. And they tore their robes and

  616. sprinkled dust on their heads toward

  617. heaven. And they sat with him on the

  618. ground seven days and seven nights. And

  619. no one spoke a word to him.

  620. For they saw

  621. that his suffering

  622. was very great.

  623. Yes.

  624. Satan didn't win.

  625. Job did not sin.

  626. And yet Job sits there destroyed.

  627. And what Job needs at this moment is

  628. what all of us need in these kind of

  629. moments,

  630. friends.

  631. And what I want to do very practically

  632. is just look at what these friends do

  633. when they see their friend in pain. Look

  634. at their actions.

  635. We'll get to their words. Their words

  636. terrible. Their actions pretty good.

  637. What do we see the friends doing? And I

  638. think we can learn from all of this in

  639. what we see the friends doing.

  640. The first thing Job's friends do in

  641. verse 11, when they see his pain and

  642. when they see his suffering and when

  643. they see his destruction, the first

  644. things his friends do is this. They go,

  645. they hear of the evil that had happened

  646. and come upon their friend and they go

  647. and they come, each one in verse 11,

  648. each one comes from his own town. And

  649. it's very hard to pinpoint where exactly

  650. those towns are. But it seems to be

  651. rough estimates that each one of these

  652. guys are traveling over 200 kilometers

  653. at least.

  654. When they see their friend in pain and

  655. suffering, what do they do? They drop

  656. everything and they go no matter what

  657. the distance.

  658. The second thing the friends do is this.

  659. They comfort.

  660. The end of verse 11, they made an

  661. appointment together to come and show

  662. sympathy and comfort him.

  663. They show comfort to their friend. They

  664. sympathize with him. They try and get

  665. into what he is feeling and experiencing

  666. and they seek to bring him comfort.

  667. That's what we need in our pain. Friends

  668. who will seek to bring comfort. Now

  669. later in the book,

  670. Job is going to call them in chapter 16,

  671. I think it is, miserable comforters,

  672. but for now they're okay.

  673. They come, they drop everything and they

  674. seek to comfort.

  675. I think we can learn from these two

  676. things.

  677. I think as sufferers, those who suffer

  678. can learn this.

  679. When you are suffering,

  680. you should tell people that you are

  681. suffering.

  682. The friends only go because the friends

  683. heard. That's the only reason the

  684. friends go. They heard. So all of them

  685. went.

  686. Now they could hear about Job's

  687. suffering. Job didn't have to tell them.

  688. Why? Because Job was one of the most

  689. famous people in all the east and his

  690. suffering spread throughout all the

  691. lands. It was a great suffering.

  692. But the important thing to note is the

  693. only reason the friends go is because

  694. they've heard about the trouble.

  695. And so I would encourage you if you're

  696. ever suffering,

  697. make sure people hear about it.

  698. Tell people

  699. whatever the suffering is,

  700. whether it's big or small,

  701. anxiety, grief, loneliness, depression,

  702. loss, whatever it might be,

  703. the friends may not be able to come

  704. because they just don't know and they

  705. haven't heard.

  706. Tell them.

  707. Can I be really honest with you? I

  708. struggle with this.

  709. I find it hard to just tell people

  710. what's going on. I don't want to make a

  711. fuss.

  712. The encouragement here

  713. is to tell people

  714. they heard. So the sufferer should tell.

  715. And those who hear of the suffering,

  716. what should they do? You should go and

  717. you should comfort.

  718. We live in a very selfish world.

  719. I know people want to point out all the

  720. selflessness that's happening, but

  721. actually we live in a very very selfish

  722. world.

  723. And what people need in their suffering

  724. is not not just a quick text or a phone

  725. call.

  726. They need you to drop the phone

  727. and get in the car and go.

  728. And if needs be, they need you to drop

  729. the phone and get in a plane and go

  730. so you can be with them and comfort them

  731. in their pain.

  732. This is what these friends do. They go

  733. and they comfort. And the third thing

  734. the friends do is they weep. Verse 12.

  735. And when they saw him from a distance,

  736. they could not recognize him, and they

  737. raised their voices and wept, and they

  738. tore their robes and sprinkled dust on

  739. their heads toward heaven.

  740. Now, some people still read the actions

  741. of the friends here negatively, like

  742. that almost they say that the friends

  743. are weeping at him rather than weeping

  744. with him. I don't see that happening as

  745. negatively. I see them partaking in very

  746. traditional uh grieving rituals,

  747. mourning rituals where you would raise

  748. your voice, where you would weep with

  749. the person, where you would tear your

  750. clothes, and where you'd put dust on

  751. your head. And why would you put dust on

  752. your head? Well, from ashes to ashes,

  753. dust to dust. You're experiencing right

  754. now something that's like death.

  755. What I'm going to do is I'm going to

  756. tear all my clothes and I'm I'm going to

  757. put dust on me and I'm going to help

  758. stand with you and experience the death

  759. that you are experiencing.

  760. They go to their friend and they weep

  761. with him.

  762. And the fourth thing they do in verse

  763. 13, and they sat with him on the ground

  764. seven days and seven nights.

  765. They go and they don't just look at him

  766. in his pain.

  767. They go

  768. and they get down on the ground

  769. and they weep

  770. and they stay with them for as long as

  771. it takes.

  772. Seven days,

  773. seven nights.

  774. The perfect amount of time

  775. to weep with their friend.

  776. That's what I would encourage you to do.

  777. Go

  778. be with people in their pain.

  779. Go and sit with them. And guess what?

  780. Going and sitting with someone, it's

  781. never convenient.

  782. Suffering never kind of fit. Have you

  783. noticed that about suffering? It doesn't

  784. fit our schedule. Usually suffering just

  785. happens.

  786. which means

  787. we may have to put the schedule aside

  788. and go and just sit with the person,

  789. weep with those who weep and mourn with

  790. those who mourn.

  791. And the final thing that the friends do

  792. is probably the best thing they did

  793. is they did not speak a word.

  794. It's probably the wisest thing these

  795. friends did in the whole book.

  796. They did not speak a word.

  797. Sometimes

  798. no words are the best words.

  799. Sometimes people are in such pain

  800. that they'll know God is in control. You

  801. know, I actually believe he's in

  802. control,

  803. but telling them

  804. that at that moment

  805. mightn't be the very best thing at that

  806. moment.

  807. Might just be being with them.

  808. Sometimes we say words to help us more

  809. than to help them.

  810. But the reality is of course that what

  811. they are doing here is a traditional

  812. mourning grieving experience for seven

  813. days and for seven nights.

  814. And obviously it's not going to be

  815. helpful for the Christian if someone

  816. doesn't speak to them for seven days.

  817. But the principle is still there.

  818. Sometimes

  819. all a person needs in that moment is

  820. just for you to keep the mouth quiet and

  821. give them a hug.

  822. And then when the time is right, what

  823. should you do in their suffering?

  824. I think you should tell them all about

  825. the suffering servant.

  826. What do they need at that moment? They

  827. need Jesus. And in those moments, they

  828. don't often think about Jesus.

  829. So tell them about the suffering servant

  830. who suffered for them. Tell them about

  831. him in their suffering.

  832. And so as I look at the life of Job, it

  833. says this about him at the end of

  834. chapter 2. His suffering was very great.

  835. Job's life

  836. always points to the suffering servant.

  837. And what I want to do is just read to

  838. you the suffering that our savior

  839. experienced.

  840. Isaiah 53:2.

    Isaiah 53:2

  841. We'll end with this.

  842. He had no form or majesty that we should

  843. look at him. He had no beauty that we

  844. should desire him.

  845. He was despised and rejected.

  846. A man of sorrows and familiar with

  847. grief.

  848. And as one who men hid their faces from,

  849. he was despised,

  850. and we esteemed him not.

  851. Surely he has borne our griefs, and he

  852. has carried our sorrows.

  853. Yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by

  854. God, and afflicted.

  855. But he was pierced for our

  856. transgressions.

  857. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  858. Upon him was the chastisement that

  859. brought us peace.

  860. And by his wounds we are healed.

  861. All we like sheep have gone astray. We

  862. have turned everyone to his own way. And

  863. the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of

  864. us all. He was oppressed

  865. and he was afflicted.

  866. Yet he opened not his mouth.

  867. He kept his lips shut. This is our

  868. savior. Let's pray.

  869. Lord Jesus,

  870. we thank you that you are the one who

  871. opened not your mouth,

  872. but were bruised for our transgressions

  873. and pierced for our iniquities.

  874. And we thank you that in our suffering

  875. and in our grief, we have a suffering

  876. savior who we can turn to, who knows our

  877. grief, who knows our sorrows, who knows

  878. our pain,

  879. and who can truly as a good friend

  880. give us comfort.

  881. We pray all this in your name, Jesus.

  882. Amen.

  883. Let's stand and sing
