  1. from chapter 4 to 14. The second

  2. conversation is from chapter 15 to 21

  3. between Job and his friends. And the

  4. third conversation is chapter 22 to

    Isaiah 22 chapter mention

  5. chapter 27.

  6. And this morning, what I want us to do

  7. is just look at the highlights from the

  8. first conversation between Job and his

  9. friends. The first conversation is

    Isaiah 4 chapter mention

  10. chapter 4 to 14. We're just going to

  11. look at the highlights of this first

  12. conversation. And first, what I want you

  13. to see is just the the shape of the

  14. conversation before we get to what we

  15. learn about in the conversation. Look at

  16. the shape of the conversation. Chapter

  17. 4, verse one, who speaks first. Then

  18. Elephaz the Temonite answered and said,

  19. so Elephaz, he speaks first. He's the

  20. first friend to speak and he speaks from

  21. chapter 4 to chapter 5. And then what

  22. happens in this conversation in chapter

  23. 6? Job replies. Chapter 6:1, Job

  24. answered and said, and Job speaks his

  25. answer to Elephaz from chapter 6 all the

  26. way to chapter 7. And then the second

  27. friend speaks,

  28. Bildad. Chapter 8 verse 1. Then Bildad

  29. the Shouite answered and said, but this

  30. time he doesn't speak for two chapters.

  31. He speaks for one chapter trying to

  32. understand Job's suffering and then

  33. again in this conversation Job answers

  34. back says in chapter 9 verse one then

  35. Job answered and said and Job speaks

  36. from chapter 9 to chapter 10 in response

  37. and then finally there's Zofar the third

  38. friend he speaks in chapter 11 verse one

  39. it says Zofar the Neatite answered and

  40. said

  41. and he speaks for only one chapter and

  42. he says fewer words than any of them in

  43. all the conversation

  44. and then Job replies in chapter 12 verse

  45. one but Job doesn't reply with one

  46. chapter Job doesn't reply with two

  47. chapters Job speaks back with three full

  48. chapters

  49. now there is a reason for that pattern

  50. there is a reason why the friends

  51. conversation gets smaller and Job's part

  52. of the conversation gets bigger. And

  53. we'll look at that for the moment. But I

  54. just want you to see the back and forth

  55. that is happening as they're trying to

  56. understand what is going on with Job's

  57. suffering.

  58. And there's a few things that I want us

  59. to learn as we look at this

  60. conversation. We're going to be flipping

  61. back and forth throughout these

  62. chapters. There's a few things that I

  63. want us to learn as those who experience

  64. suffering. Our friends, they are going

  65. to come and talk to us and they should

  66. and they are going to use words. And the

  67. first thing I think we learn as we look

  68. at these friends conver this friend

  69. conversation is this that when we

  70. suffer, friends will use good words.

  71. So I want you to notice that in this

  72. conversation that when we suffer,

  73. friends will use good words. And I hope

  74. that's the case for all of us as

  75. Christians. We will suffer and hopefully

  76. our Christian friends will come to us

  77. and they will hug us and they will be

  78. with us and weep with us. But we hope

  79. that they will say good words

  80. to us.

  81. A strange thing happens sometimes to

  82. Christians who are suffering.

  83. Sometimes they don't want to hear that

  84. God is sovereign.

  85. Sometimes they don't want to hear that

  86. God is good

  87. because the reaction is I already know

  88. that stuff. Don't tell me.

  89. But it is right for us as Christians to

  90. say good words to people who are

  91. suffering. And I believe as you look at

  92. these these friends speeches now you do

  93. have to look hard for the good words.

  94. But I think you can firstly see good

  95. words in these friends speeches. And the

  96. good words that you see are good words

  97. about God. First turn to Elephaz's

  98. speech. His is the first. Elephas's

  99. speech in Job 5:8.

    Job 5:8

  100. Elephas says good words about God. Job

    Job 5:8

  101. 5:8. He says this, "As for me, I would

  102. seek God, and to God would I commit my

  103. cause, who ha who does great things

  104. and unsearchable, marvelous things

  105. without number. He gives rain on the

  106. earth and sends water on the field. He

  107. sets on high those who are lowly, and

  108. those who are mourn are lifted to

  109. safety. He frustrates the devices of the

  110. crafty so that their hands achieve no

  111. success. He catches the wise in their

  112. own craftiness and the schemes of the

  113. wily are brought to a quick end.

  114. These are true words about God.

  115. Sometimes when people look at the words

  116. of the friends, they say that all of

  117. their words are bad. But actually when

  118. you look at some of their words, you see

  119. they say true words about God. And he

  120. speaks that to Job and his suffering.

  121. You need to know that the Lord, he does

  122. great things. You need to know that the

  123. Lord is marvelous. You need to know in

  124. your suffering that the Lord, he is

  125. unsearchable. And Elephaz says those

  126. good words.

  127. Then you turn to the next friend,

  128. Billad, in chapter 8, and you have to

  129. search a little bit harder for the good

  130. words in in Billad's speech. In chapter

  131. 8:3 he says this, "Does God pervert

  132. justice or does the Almighty pervert the

  133. right?"

  134. In asking those questions, he is

  135. implying something of God, something

  136. good of God, that God is indeed just. He

  137. says, "Does God pervert justice?" The

  138. implied answer is no. God does not per

  139. pervert justice which means he is always

  140. just and good.

  141. And so Alfaz says good words about God

  142. and Bildad says good words about God.

  143. And Zofar as you search his speech in

  144. chapter 11 when Zofar speaks to Job

  145. again you have to search quite hard for

  146. the good things that he says.

  147. But he speaks and he says this in

  148. chapter 11 verse7

  149. when he's speaking of the wisdom of God

  150. he says

  151. can you find out the deep things of God

  152. can you find out the limit of the

  153. almighty

  154. it is higher than heaven

  155. what can you do deeper than shol

  156. what can you know its measure is longer

  157. than the earth and broader than the sea.

  158. God's wisdom, the Almighty's wisdom is

  159. without limit, he says. And so all of

  160. these three friends

  161. speak to Job in his suffering and they

  162. speak good words about God in suffering.

  163. A strange thing happens to Christians

  164. sometimes when they see other Christians

  165. suffering.

  166. We find it hard to speak to them.

  167. And then when we do speak to them, we

  168. forget to speak to them about God.

  169. We forget to speak to them the good

  170. things about God.

  171. It should never be awkward to speak to

  172. another Christian about God.

  173. And for those of you who are suffering,

  174. sometimes we falsely think, I don't need

  175. to hear about God in my suffering. I

  176. know all these things about God.

  177. Oddly enough, this temptation has

  178. happened to me. I preach about God. I

  179. teach about God. I don't need to hear

  180. the words about God. That's wrong. I do.

  181. I need to hear good things about God. I

  182. need to hear truth about God in my

  183. suffering, even though I think that's

  184. not what I need.

  185. So, good friends need to speak those

  186. good words about God to one another. And

  187. this is partly what these friends do.

  188. And some of this, it must be said

  189. that it does encourage us in the church.

  190. It does encourage us to pursue

  191. friendship, doesn't it?

  192. You know, there the books in the Bible

  193. that teach most about friendship

  194. are the wisdom books of the Bible.

  195. Meaning

  196. the wise thing the wisest thing you

  197. could do in life is be a friend of God.

  198. And another wise thing you could do in

  199. life be friends to others.

  200. So as you look at friendship, a big

  201. theme in the book of Proverbs, the

  202. wisdom book of the Bible is friendship.

  203. A big theme in the book of Job is

  204. friendship.

  205. And it is something that we need to

  206. pursue.

  207. Says in Proverbs 27:9,

    Proverbs 27:9

  208. "Oil and perfume make the heart glad,

  209. and the sweetness of a friend comes from

  210. earnest counsel."

  211. We need friends in our time of

  212. suffering.

  213. What can happen in our time of suffering

  214. is this. as a defense mechanism. We

  215. retreat and try and avoid people.

  216. I would encourage you, that is a unique

  217. temptation that suffering people

  218. experience. You retreat and you go into

  219. your shell. I would encourage you push

  220. forward and come towards people. Don't

  221. retreat and walk away from people.

  222. Pursue friendship. And the thing is

  223. people just think friendship just

  224. happens. Oh, friendship just happens to

  225. us. It just happens to us. And then

  226. we'll give out to the young man when the

  227. young man says, "Oh yeah, love will just

  228. happen to me. She'll just find me.

  229. She'll just come and get me. She'll just

  230. land on my front door." No, young man.

  231. She won't land on your front door. You

  232. have to go and pursue her.

  233. Go and get her.

  234. Pursue.

  235. And yet when it comes to our

  236. friendships, we just sit back and we

  237. say, "No one's my friend.

  238. I don't have any friends. I'm all alone.

  239. No, we pursue friendship.

  240. And that's at the heart of the gospel.

  241. Jesus, who is he? Jesus, the friend of

  242. sinners. What did he do? He pursued us.

  243. And so, we need to pursue others in

  244. friendship. And as we do in our times of

  245. suffering, those friends will come to us

  246. and they'll speak good words to us.

  247. So we learn from these conversations

  248. that in our suffering, friends will

  249. speak good words to us. But we also need

  250. to learn that in our suffering, the

  251. friends will also speak insensitive

  252. words to us.

  253. When you are suffering,

  254. people will say insensitive words.

  255. They'll just say the wrong thing. And

  256. when you're suffering, you should not be

  257. so sensitive to those things. It's good

  258. that people say things to you, but you

  259. need to realize and understand that

  260. friends will say insensitive things to

  261. you. And Job's friends, they are experts

  262. at saying insensitive things.

  263. Look at Elephas's speech. Go back to Job

  264. 4 verse one.

  265. Look at Elephas's insensitive words.

  266. Chapter 4 verse one. Then Elephaz the

  267. Timite answered and said, "If one

  268. ventures a word with you, will you be

  269. impatient?

  270. Yet who can keep from speaking? Behold,

  271. you have instructed many, and you have

  272. strengthened the weak hands. Your words

  273. have upheld him who was stumbling and

  274. you have made firm the feeble knees.

  275. But now it has come to you and you are

  276. impatient. It touches you and you are

  277. dismayed.

  278. Is not your fear of God, your confidence

  279. and the integrity of your ways your

  280. hope.

  281. What is Elephaz doing? Actually,

  282. Elephaz,

  283. he is I'm going to say this. It doesn't

  284. sound like this, but he is gently

  285. rebuking Job. And I say gently because

  286. wait for the other speeches. He's gently

  287. rebuking Job and being insensitive. And

  288. what is he saying?

  289. He's saying he repeats this word twice

  290. in verse two and in verse 5. Job, you

  291. are being impatient.

  292. You imagine hearing those words.

  293. I've lost my house. I've lost my

  294. servant.

  295. I've lost my children.

  296. I've lost my health. You've seen me

  297. silent for seven days.

  298. I've cried out and wished I've never

  299. been born.

  300. You're calling me impatient.

  301. They're insensitive words.

  302. And I believe the the friends are saying

  303. insensitive words because they have bad

  304. theology. We'll get to this in a second,

  305. but basically their bad theology is

  306. this. Good people will always get

  307. blessing and bad people will always get

  308. suffering.

  309. And so their conclusion is, Job, you're

  310. just being impatient.

  311. Insensitive words. Friends will say

  312. insensitive words.

  313. Then we look at the start of Billad's

  314. speech. Turn to chapter 8 verse one and

  315. we'll see his insensitive words. And

  316. these insensitive words, they get kind

  317. of worse. But look at this. Buildadapter

  318. 8 verse one. Then Bildad the Shouite

  319. answered and said, "How long will you

  320. say these things and the words of your

  321. mouth be a great wind?"

  322. Does God pervert justice or does the

  323. Almighty pervert the right? If your

  324. children have sinned against him, he has

  325. delivered them into the hand of their

  326. transgression.

  327. Again, notice the focus on words.

  328. Elephas says, "Will you accuse me of

  329. saying wrong? If I use these words

  330. against you, will you be impatient with

  331. my words?" And Bill Dad, he now

  332. criticizes his words with insensitive

  333. words by saying, "When you speak, Job,

  334. it's just like a great wind coming. Your

  335. words are like wind, Job. You're just

  336. blowing smoke. Job, you're a windbag

  337. when you talk."

  338. Job has lost everything.

  339. These are insensitive words, aren't

  340. they?

  341. And then as you move to the last

  342. friend's speech,

  343. well, just just first of all look at

  344. look at Job's response to this and it's

  345. quite curious. He calls him a windbag

  346. basically in chapter 8 verse 2. And then

  347. Job responds in chapter 9:1. Then Job

  348. answered and said, "Truly,

  349. I know that it is so, but how can a man

  350. be in the right before God?" He doesn't

  351. give out to him for saying he's a

  352. windbag. He just says, "I know that it

  353. is true." Why? Because Job actually

  354. believes that bad theology

  355. that good people get blessing and bad

  356. people get suffering.

  357. But he doesn't understand why he is

  358. experiencing the suffering because he

  359. doesn't believe that he's truly been

  360. bad.

  361. So he doesn't criticize the friends.

  362. And then finally we get to Zofar's

  363. insensitive words.

  364. And Zofar is the worst of them all. It

  365. just gets worse and worse as the

  366. conversation progresses. Zofar 11 verse

  367. 1.

  368. Then Zofar the Neamothite answered and

  369. said, "Should a multitude of words go

  370. unanswered and a man full of talk be

  371. judged right? Should your babble silence

  372. men? And when you mock, shall no one

  373. shame you.

  374. Job, you're just full of talk.

  375. Job, you're full of babble. Why don't

  376. you just be silent, Job?"

  377. He even alludes to the fact that Job is

  378. a worthless man and even stupid in 11.

  379. For he knows, speaking of God, for he

  380. knows worthless men when he sees

  381. iniquity.

  382. Will he not consider it? Verse 12, but a

  383. stupid man will get understanding

  384. when a wild donkey's cult is born a man.

  385. What is he alluding to the fact? You're

  386. just full of words. You're just full of

  387. speak.

  388. In other words, the way his speech goes,

  389. and it sounds awful. No, no, no. Oh, I

  390. lost my children. I lost my house. I

  391. lost my servants. I lost everything.

  392. Job, you're just No, no, no, no. Full of

  393. talk,

  394. awful,

  395. insensitive

  396. words.

  397. Finally,

  398. Job does get really annoyed and this is

  399. why he speaks for three chapters in

  400. response.

  401. Chapter 12:1. Then Job answered and

  402. said, "No doubt you are the people

  403. and wisdom will die with you. But I have

  404. understanding as well as you. I am not

  405. inferior to you. who does not know such

  406. things as these.

  407. Do you notice the way he speaks?

  408. Oh, no doubt. You're the people. Oh,

  409. yeah. Wisdom wisdom is going to die with

  410. you.

  411. It's like he's saying to one of them,

  412. you're the man. Of course, you're the

  413. man. You have all wisdom and wisdom's

  414. just going to go to the grave with you.

  415. Wherever you go, wisdom follows. Oh,

  416. yeah. You're all so great.

  417. And in the end of this conversation,

  418. he's not just addressing Zofar, but he's

  419. addressing all of the friends.

  420. Their words are insensitive.

  421. They're not being careful.

  422. We need

  423. as we speak to people who are suffering,

  424. we need to be careful with our words.

  425. We need to choose our words carefully.

  426. That's what wisdom would say. If you

  427. want to know the books in the Bible that

  428. talk the most about words, where do you

  429. turn? The wisdom books.

  430. The book of Proverbs instructs us be

  431. careful with our words. The book of

  432. James, the wisdom book of the New

  433. Testament, encourages us, be careful

  434. with the tongue. It's like a fire.

  435. So those who would be wise in life,

  436. those who would be good and wise friends

  437. will not only speak good words, but they

  438. will be careful not to speak insensitive

  439. words.

  440. Proverbs 10 11 says this,

  441. "The mouth of the righteous is a

  442. fountain of life, but the mouth of the

  443. wicked conceals

  444. violence."

  445. Your words

  446. can speak life

  447. or your words can speak death.

  448. The answer is not not to speak. The

  449. answer is to be careful when you do

  450. speak

  451. that you speak into people's suffering

  452. with thought and care. Not like these

  453. friends.

  454. often in our suffering, we'd prefer to

  455. crawl up into a little hole and we'd

  456. prefer people just not to speak to us. I

  457. want to be alone. Um, and I've had that

  458. feeling recently.

  459. Don't want people to speak to me. Want

  460. to be left alone.

  461. Um, and I had that feeling when when mom

  462. was getting quite sick just near the

  463. end. this Friday night Bible study.

  464. Guess where I didn't want to go.

  465. You're a pastor. You should want to go

  466. to everything.

  467. Didn't want to.

  468. Don't want anybody to ask me.

  469. Don't want to talk to anybody.

  470. But I know what I would preach.

  471. Push in.

  472. So I pushed in

  473. and I went

  474. and a friend Steve asked me, "How are

  475. you doing?

  476. How's your mom?" Not good.

  477. And there in the Bible study, he said,

  478. "Can I pray?"

  479. Those were good words.

  480. That's exactly what I needed. Someone to

  481. pray, not to teach me what's happening.

  482. not to sit down and give me a theology

  483. lesson,

  484. just to pray.

  485. Standing there at the Bible study, he

  486. put his arm on me and he prayed.

  487. Good words,

  488. good friend, good things to say.

  489. Now, before that, if someone had said,

  490. "He's going to ask you, then in the

  491. middle he's going to stand and put his

  492. hands." I'd say, "No way.

  493. That's exactly what I needed.

  494. We need to be careful with our words

  495. when people are suffering. And it the

  496. answer is not to say no words, but the

  497. answer is to say good and godly and

  498. careful words.

  499. So these friends in one sense they do

  500. say good words about God and in the

  501. other sense we've seen that these

  502. friends they do say insensitive words

  503. that they shouldn't say

  504. but the final thing I want us to look at

  505. is the reason why they say these

  506. insensitive words

  507. and the reason why these friends say

  508. insensitive words is because they have

  509. bad theology. ology.

  510. And what I want you to understand is

  511. that in your suffering,

  512. sometimes people will speak bad words to

  513. you. And when I say bad words, I don't

  514. mean like swear words. Um, hopefully

  515. not. What I mean by bad words is

  516. sometimes people will speak bad theology

  517. into your suffering.

  518. And I've seen this before and you should

  519. prepare yourself for it. Even

  520. well-meaning Christians will speak bad

  521. theology into your suffering.

  522. There was a friend of mine that was

  523. dying.

  524. People were saying they were praying and

  525. people were praying for a miracle for

  526. that friend.

  527. But some people promised that friend

  528. that they would get healing.

  529. Promised

  530. that they will get healing.

  531. Guess what?

  532. The friend died.

  533. Brothers and sisters, we should pray for

  534. a miracle in people's lives. We should

  535. pray for miracles. But miracles are

  536. exactly that. They are miracles.

  537. Meaning, they are not the norm.

  538. They're not the norm. Do you know what

  539. the norm is in this broken and and

  540. desperate world? The norm is suffering.

  541. That's the norm.

  542. The norm is one day all of us will die.

  543. That is the norm.

  544. So it's bad theology to come to someone

  545. and promise them healing when that is

  546. never guaranteed.

  547. And that is the reason why these friends

  548. are saying what they're saying because

  549. they believe a bad theology. And the bad

  550. theology is this. Here's their bad

  551. theology.

  552. Good people will always be blessed

  553. and bad people will always suffer.

  554. That's their bad theology. So what's

  555. their conclusion about Job? Job, if

  556. you're suffering, guess what? That must

  557. mean you're a bad guy. That must mean

  558. you're suffering because of sin in your

  559. life. The technical term for this bad

  560. theology is retribution theology.

  561. It's not just you reap what you sow. It

  562. is you will always reap what you sow.

  563. It is their version of the prosperity

  564. gospel. If I live a good life, if I

  565. behave in a good way, I will always get

  566. blessing. If I'm a sinner and live a bad

  567. life, I will always get suffering. And

  568. that's their bad theology.

  569. They're constantly saying in the

  570. conversation, Job, you must be guilty.

  571. And Job, though he knows and understands

  572. the theology, says, "Guys, I don't know

  573. what's going on, but I'm not guilty. I'm

  574. innocent."

  575. And so, you see this theology throughout

  576. their speeches. Look at Elephas's bad

  577. theology.

  578. In chapter 4, verse 7, Elephaz says

  579. this, "Remember,

  580. who that was innocent ever perished?

  581. Or where were the upright cut off? As I

  582. have seen those who plow iniquity

  583. and sow trouble reap the same. Do you

  584. see the theology? It's the bad theology.

  585. It's it's the bad words. It's the

  586. retribution theology.

  587. Job remember

  588. who that was innocent ever perished.

  589. Good people never have bad things happen

  590. to them. This is the theology that we

  591. believe. And remember, the reason he's

  592. saying remember to Job is because this

  593. is the theology that Job preached and

  594. this is a theology that Job believed.

  595. Remember, none of this would be

  596. happening to you

  597. unless you've sinned in some way. He

  598. goes on in this bad theology to say in

  599. chapter 5 6 he says this again for

  600. affliction or trouble does not come from

  601. the dust nor does trouble sprout from

  602. the ground but man is born to trouble as

  603. sparks fly upward. What's he saying?

  604. Trouble isn't just coming from nowhere.

  605. It's not just coming from from the dust.

  606. There's no smoke, Job, without fire. The

  607. reason you're suffering is surely

  608. because of your sin. That's the bad

  609. theology.

  610. But Job replies there, the friends are

  611. saying you're guilty. And Job replies

  612. saying he's not guilty.

  613. And Job's response in chapter 6 verse

  614. 24, he says this to his friend

  615. Elephas.

  616. Verse 24, teach me and I will be silent.

  617. Make me understand how I've gone astray.

  618. Tell me what I've done and I'll be

  619. quiet.

  620. Show me my sin and I'll turn around.

  621. Then he says he's innocent again in

  622. verse 27 of chapter 6. But now be

  623. pleased to look at me for I will not lie

  624. to your place face. Please turn. Let no

  625. injustice be done. Turn now. My

  626. vindication is at stake. Is there any

  627. injustice on my tongue? Cannot my pallet

  628. discern the cause of calamity? Do you

  629. hear what Job is saying? Look me in the

  630. eyes. Look in my face. I've done nothing

  631. wrong. I am innocent.

  632. That's how he defends himself to

  633. Elephas. And then we see this bad

  634. theology with Billad and Billad's

  635. speech. Job, you're only suffering

  636. because you must have sinned. Your

  637. children are only suffering because you

  638. must have sinned. Chapter 8:3.

  639. Does God pervert justice? Or does the

  640. Almighty pervert the right? If your

  641. children have sinned against him, he has

  642. delivered them into the hand of their

  643. transgression. Do you know the awful

  644. thing that he's saying here?

  645. Job, the reason your children died was

  646. because of their sin.

  647. if they didn't sin, they wouldn't have

  648. died. Terrible theology.

  649. And then he goes on to say again in this

  650. bad theology, he says that the that the

  651. you know that the reason you are

  652. suffering is because of your sin. In Job

    Job 20 chapter mention

  653. chapter 20, chapter 8 20, he says this,

  654. "Behold, God will not reject a blameless

  655. man, nor take the hand of evildoers.

  656. If you're blameless, it will all be

  657. good. You're suffering, Job, because of

  658. your sin. And Job comes back and he says

  659. again, I know the theology. I understand

  660. the theology. I believe that theology

  661. before, but I don't know what's going

  662. on, guys, because I am not guilty. He

  663. responds to Bildad in chapter 9 20 and

  664. says this

  665. chapter 9 20 though I am in the right my

  666. own mouth would condemn me. Though I am

  667. blameless he would prove me perverse. I

  668. am blameless. I regard not myself. I loa

  669. my life. It is all the one. Therefore I

  670. say he destroys both the blameless and

  671. the wicked. What is Job saying? I'm

  672. blameless. I'm blameless. I'm blameless.

  673. I'm not guilty. I've done nothing wrong.

  674. And then finally, we get to Zofar. And

  675. Zofar is bad theology.

  676. He says this in in chapter 11 verse4.

  677. For you say, "My doctrine is pure and I

  678. am clean in God's eyes." But oh that God

  679. would speak and open his lips to you and

  680. that he would tell you the secrets of

  681. wisdom. For he is manifold in

  682. understanding. Know then that God exacts

  683. of you less than your guilt deserves.

  684. Job.

  685. God is doing what is right here. You are

  686. suffering because of your sin. You need

  687. to repent. And Job, what you're getting

  688. off lightly compared to your guilt.

  689. Horrible things to say. He's lost

  690. everything.

  691. And Zofar is telling him, "You are

  692. getting less than your guilt deserves."

  693. These are terrible friends, aren't they?

  694. This is why

  695. Job responds and says to them

  696. in Job chapter 13 verse4,

    Job 13 chapter mention

  697. "As for you, you whitewash with lies,

  698. worthless physicians are you all, oh

  699. that you would keep silent, and that

  700. would be your wisdom.

  701. You're liars. You're bad physicians.

  702. You're worthless

  703. because of their bad theology.

  704. Sometimes in your suffering, friends

  705. will speak bad words to you. Bad

  706. theology to you.

  707. The Lord believes that all of the words

  708. that these friends said were bad

  709. theology. Turn just for a second to Job

  710. 42.

  711. Job chapter 42:7.

  712. And here is the verdict on the words

  713. that these friends have said.

  714. Job 42:7.

    Job 42:7

  715. After the Lord had spoken these words to

  716. Job, the Lord said to Elephaz the

  717. Timite, that's the first friend who

  718. spoke. My anger burns against you and

  719. against your two friends. For you have

  720. spoken of me what what is right. For you

  721. have not spoken of me what is right, as

  722. my servant Job has. Now therefore, take

  723. seven bulls and seven rams and go to my

  724. servant Job and offer up a burnt

  725. offering for yourselves. and my servant

  726. Job shall pray for you. For I will

  727. accept his prayer, not to deal with you

  728. according to your folly,

  729. for you have not spoken of me what is

  730. right, as my servant Job has."

  731. Which means as we read these next

  732. conversations, conversation one,

  733. conversation two, conversation three,

  734. and we hear the words of the friends, we

  735. should be saying these words are wrong.

  736. These words are not honoring to God.

  737. These guys

  738. have bad theology.

  739. Sometimes in our suffering, our friends

  740. will say wrong words to us,

  741. bad words to us.

  742. What does that mean for us in order for

  743. us to be a good friend? Here's what you

  744. should do. First, you should pursue

  745. friends. It's a wise thing. Pursue

  746. friendship. The best way to get friends

  747. is to be a friend.

  748. Pursue friendship with others. Second,

  749. seek to speak good words to others.

  750. Seek to speak good words to those

  751. friends. Third, be sensitive with your

  752. words. Oh, I just speak my mind and

  753. people have to deal with it. It's my

  754. personality. I just say what comes out.

  755. It's not biblical.

  756. What's biblical is to be careful with

  757. what you're saying. Not just to speak

  758. whatever your heart says, but watch what

  759. you're saying. Be careful and be wise.

  760. And then also to be a good friend.

  761. Do you know what you need? Good

  762. theology.

  763. You shouldn't just seek to read the

  764. Bible

  765. to be a good friend. You need to study

  766. the Bible. Cuz guess what's going to

  767. happen to your friends when they're

  768. suffering? Your friends when they're

  769. suffering, they're not going to go to a

  770. commentary.

  771. Your friends, when they're suffering,

  772. they're not going to go and try and find

  773. a theologian.

  774. Your friends, when they're suffering, do

  775. you know who they're going to go to?

  776. You.

  777. And in the moment when they turned to

  778. you, my prayer is that everyone in this

  779. church would have good theology to

  780. speak.

  781. So how do you pursue that?

  782. Every time the Bible is taught,

  783. study it deeply.

  784. Don't just listen passively and have it

  785. flash right over you. Study it deeply.

  786. when you go to the men's and the women's

  787. study, actually do the study. Sit down

  788. and do the study. And yes, there will be

  789. nights where you haven't done the study.

  790. Okay? You know, the great sinner walks

  791. in who hasn't done the study. Who cares

  792. about that? Some nights you'll walk in

  793. and you won't have the study done. Fair

  794. enough. But we have an obligation, don't

  795. we? If we're going to be good friends to

  796. speak good theology.

  797. What these friends are speaking is bad

  798. theology

  799. because sometimes it is true that good

  800. people suffer.

  801. This is what happened with Job. At the

  802. be very beginning of the book of Job, it

  803. says of Job, the very first words of the

  804. book of Job, it says of him, he was a

  805. man blameless and upright who feared God

  806. and turned away from evil. And God

  807. speaks of Job in the very first chapter

  808. and says he is blameless and upright and

  809. fears God and turns away from evil.

  810. And then when speaking to Satan, the

  811. Lord said that Job is blameless and

  812. upright and turns away from evil.

  813. He wasn't a perfect man.

  814. He was a blameless man. And yet he

  815. suffered.

  816. Sometimes in this world, good and

  817. blameless people will suffer.

  818. And that's the reality of this broken

  819. world.

  820. It is bad theology to say that they will

  821. never suffer.

  822. It is bad theology

  823. because it is anti-gosspel theology.

  824. The perfect one suffered.

  825. Pontius Pilate was right

  826. when he said of Christ,

  827. "There is no guilt in this man."

  828. And yet people said, "Crucify him.

  829. Crucify him."

  830. An innocent man suffered for you and me

  831. that the guilty ones, you and me, might

  832. go free.

  833. That's good theology.

  834. Let's pray.

  835. Lord, we thank you for your word that we

  836. have this morning. We thank you that you

  837. speak it directly into our hearts. And

  838. we pray, Lord, that as we speak your

  839. word um to one another, that we will

  840. speak truth and good theology to one

  841. another. Help us to be good friends.

  842. Help us to share good words, speak

  843. sensitively to one another, and have

  844. good theology to teach one another. Help

  845. us, Lord, pursue friendship with each

  846. other and friendship most importantly

  847. with you. I pray this in your holy name.

  848. Amen. We might just um instead of

  849. responding with song, we might just
