    Job 22 chapter mention

  4. take your Bibles and open them up to Job

    Job 22 chapter mention

  5. chapter 22.

  6. We've been looking for the last number

  7. of weeks at the three conversations

  8. between Job and his friends. The

  9. conversations where Job and his friends

  10. are trying to understand his suffering.

  11. And conversation number one was from

  12. chapter 4 to 14 where we looked at the

  13. wrong words the friends were saying.

  14. And then the second conversation was

  15. chapter 15 to 21 where we looked at

  16. hope.

  17. And now we're in the final conversation

  18. between Job and his friends where

  19. they're trying to understand his

  20. suffering. We're going to look at the

  21. highlights of chapter 22- 27.

  22. And the big word I want us to think

  23. about as we look at this chapter is

  24. relationship.

  25. Not words, not hope, relationship.

  26. Let's pray and ask for the Lord's help.

  27. Great is thy faithfulness,

  28. Lord. We know those words are true.

  29. And if we're honest, some of us are

  30. struggling to even say that

  31. great is your faithfulness.

  32. But we know that in and through all the

  33. ups and downs in life, you remain

  34. faithful.

  35. You remain steadfast.

  36. You never change.

  37. Lord, our lives are up and down. Our

  38. emotions are up and down. Our

  39. relationships are up and down. But you

  40. are steady. You are constant. And you

  41. never change. You are faithful.

  42. And I pray this morning, no matter how

  43. we're feeling or how we come, that we'd

  44. recognize and understand that you are

  45. faithful. and that we'll trust in you to

  46. speak because your word is being open to

  47. us.

  48. Help us to see you this morning.

  49. I pray these things

  50. in Jesus precious name. Amen.

  51. This morning we are going to think about

  52. relationship.

  53. And the reason we're going to think

  54. about relationship is because really the

  55. argument between Job and his friends is

  56. concerning Job's relationship with God.

  57. They think that Job has a bad

  58. relationship with God. And and Job

  59. always thought he had a good

  60. relationship with God. And so Job's not

  61. understanding his suffering because he

  62. thinks his relationship with God is

  63. good, but he doesn't know why God is

  64. doing what he's doing. and his friends

  65. think his relationship with God is bad

  66. because of his suffering.

  67. And so that causes us, I think, to ask

  68. the question of ourselves this morning.

  69. And sometimes we don't ask the question

  70. enough,

  71. how is

  72. your relationship

  73. with God this morning?

  74. How's your relationship with God? And be

  75. honest with yourself. It's only you and

  76. your thoughts right now. God hears.

  77. How's your relationship with God

  78. right now?

  79. Does he feel far away?

  80. Does he feel close?

  81. Do you still believe in him?

  82. trust him.

  83. Are you good with him?

  84. You angry at him?

  85. How is your relationship with God this

  86. morning?

  87. I asked that question because this is

  88. the question in this conversation for

  89. Job and his friends. They're trying to

  90. figure out how his relationship with God

  91. is really going. And as we look at Job's

  92. relationship with God and what his

  93. friends think about his relationship

  94. with God, it's going to force us to ask

  95. a few questions about our relationship

  96. with God.

  97. And the first question I want us to ask

  98. this morning about our relationship with

  99. God is this.

  100. Do you need to return to God?

  101. That's the first question I want us to

  102. ask. Do you need to return to God? And

  103. the reason I asked that question is

  104. because this is exactly what Job's

  105. friends think he needs to do. They think

  106. that Job needs to return to God. And

  107. here's why they think it. Job chapter

    Job 22 chapter mention

  108. 22, Job's friend Elephas, he speaks and

  109. he thinks that Job has a problem. And

  110. here is the problem that Elephaz thinks

  111. Job has in Job 22:5. It says this, "Is

    Job 22:5

  112. not your evil abundant? There is no end

  113. to your iniquities."

  114. Elephaz thinks that Job has a problem in

  115. his relationship with God. And the

  116. problem in his relationship with God is

  117. your evil is abundant.

  118. There is no end to your sins.

  119. You are not blameless.

  120. You are a sinner. And because you are a

  121. sinner. And because you are not

  122. blameless, here is what you need to do,

  123. Job. You need to return to God.

  124. Now what does it mean in the Old

  125. Testament when he uses this word return?

  126. The word return mostly used in the Old

  127. Testament is a word shuv. It's a word

  128. for repentance and turning away from

  129. your sin and turning to God.

  130. That's what it means to return to God.

  131. And that's exactly what Elephas is going

  132. to call Job to do in this speech. Your

  133. sin is abundant. You're continually

  134. walking against God. Elephas is saying

  135. to Job. And then he calls on Job to

  136. return, to repent.

  137. Look at chapter 22 21. Here's the big

  138. call for repentance.

  139. Alfas says to Job, "Agree with God and

  140. be at peace. Thereby good will come to

  141. you. Receive instruction from his mouth

  142. and lay up his words in your heart. If

  143. you return to the Almighty, you will be

  144. built up. If you remove injustice far

  145. from your tents, if you lay gold in the

  146. dust and gold of among the stones of the

  147. torrent bed, then the Almighty will be

  148. your gold and your precious silver.

  149. For then you will delight yourself in

  150. the Almighty and and lift up your face

  151. to God.

  152. You will make your prayer to him and he

  153. will hear you and you will pay your

  154. vows.

  155. You will decide on a matter and and it

  156. will be established for you and the

  157. light will shine on your ways.

  158. For when they are humbled, you say it is

  159. because of pride. But he saves the

  160. lowly.

  161. He delivers even the one who is not

  162. innocent

  163. who will be delivered through the

  164. cleanness of your hands.

  165. Do you hear what Elephaz is saying to

  166. him? Elephas is saying to him, you need

  167. to come to the place where you agree

  168. with God. Verse 21, you need to come to

  169. the place where you are at peace with

  170. God.

  171. And did you notice the key word in verse

  172. 23?

  173. If you return to the Almighty, you will

  174. be built up.

  175. If you turn away from your sin and turn

  176. to the Almighty God, if you repent of

  177. your sin and turn to God, you will be

  178. built

  179. up.

  180. And then he says in verse 30, he

  181. delivers the one who is not innocent.

  182. This is what he thinks of Job.

  183. Job, you're not innocent. But here's the

  184. hope. If you would return to God, God

  185. delivers the one who is not innocent.

  186. Now these words

  187. in this context

  188. they seem true as you look at the words

  189. they seem beautiful and they seem true

  190. but in this context these words they're

  191. not true.

  192. Do you know why they're not true?

  193. Because of their direction and because

  194. of the foundation. The direction of the

  195. words and the foundation of the words.

  196. Who are the words directed to? The words

  197. of repentance are directed to Job.

  198. Job, you need to return to God.

  199. But we were told in the very first verse

  200. of this book something about Job.

  201. Job was a man blameless and upright, a

  202. man who feared God and turned away from

  203. evil.

  204. That phrase turned away from evil means

  205. this. He has repented of his sin. He has

  206. already returned to God. He has turned

  207. away from evil. And two more times in

  208. chapter 1 and chapter 2, the Lord says

  209. the same thing about Job. That Job is

  210. blameless. That Job is upright. That Job

  211. fears God. And that Job turns away from

  212. evil.

  213. So these words are not right in the

  214. context because they are directed to

  215. Job. And Job has already turned away.

  216. And these words of repentance, they're

  217. also not correct because of their

  218. foundation.

  219. What's the foundation upon which Elephas

  220. is saying these words of repentance? The

  221. foundation at which Elephas is saying

  222. these words of repentance is his bad

  223. theology.

  224. The reason he is saying these words is

  225. not because of his good theology. The

  226. reason he's saying these words is

  227. because of his bad theology. And what is

  228. his bad theology? That retribution

  229. theology which is this. Bad things

  230. always happen to bad people. Therefore,

  231. Job, you need to repent.

  232. Bad things are happening to Job.

  233. They always have to hap happen to bad

  234. people. Therefore, Job, you're a bad

  235. person. Therefore, you need to repent.

  236. And so, these words in that sense,

  237. they're not true because of their

  238. foundation. They're not true because

  239. their direction. It's not true of Job.

  240. And they're not true because their

  241. foundation.

  242. But the question for us in relation to

  243. our relationship with God is this.

  244. Are they true for you?

  245. They're not true for Job?

  246. Because Job is blameless. He's upright.

  247. He fears God.

  248. He turns away from evil.

  249. But is that true of you?

  250. The most damaging thing

  251. for our relationship with God is this,

  252. a lack of repentance.

  253. that we continually live in our sin and

  254. pursue it.

  255. It says in verse 23, "If you return to

  256. the Almighty, he will build you up."

  257. Are you walking away from God this

  258. morning?

  259. Because if you are walking away from God

  260. this morning, the scripture tells us

  261. that wide is the path that leads to

  262. destruction.

  263. That's the path you're on. If you're

  264. walking away from the Lord, that's the

  265. path you're on. The path that leads to

  266. death and destruction. And what God is

  267. calling upon you this morning to do is

  268. this. Turn around and go through the

  269. narrow path that leads to life.

  270. That is the Christian life. A life where

  271. we are constantly turning away from our

  272. sin and returning to God.

  273. Yes. The Christian life began with a

  274. one-time moment of repentance

  275. where you said to the Lord, "Lord, will

  276. you forgive me of my sin?"

  277. But do you know what the Christian life

  278. is? At least this is my experience.

  279. Here's what the Christian life is. It's

  280. daily repentance.

  281. Day after day,

  282. I'm tempted to to turn to evil.

  283. And God is calling me day after day.

  284. Shane, be a man of repentance.

  285. And that's what I call on you to be. Be

  286. a man and be a woman of repentance. Have

  287. repentance mark your life.

  288. was talking to a father this week

  289. and he said to me, "I don't want to be

  290. like my dad."

  291. And do you know why he said he didn't

  292. want to be like his dad? He said my dad

  293. was always angry.

  294. My dad was always angry.

  295. And he said, "Shane,

  296. I get angry.

  297. I too get angry

  298. but I don't want to be my like my dad.

  299. Why? Because of this.

  300. He never once

  301. asked for forgiveness.

  302. I want to always

  303. ask for forgiveness.

  304. It's unrealistic to think.

  305. Maybe some perfect parents out here, but

  306. it's unrealistic to think

  307. that parents will never get angry,

  308. but we should always repent.

  309. It's unrealistic to think that we as

  310. friends will never get angry or

  311. frustrated at each other,

  312. but we should always repent.

  313. Return to God.

  314. If your relationship is like this where

  315. you're turned away from God,

  316. you are called this morning to return

  317. back to God.

  318. That's the first question. Do you need

  319. to return to God? The second question

  320. I'm basing on chapter 23 and it is this.

  321. Are you longing to find God?

  322. Are you longing in your relationship

  323. with God? Are you longing to find God?

  324. And the reason I ask this question is

  325. because that is exactly what Job is

  326. longing to do. He is longing to find

  327. God. His friends are saying, "Job, you

  328. need to return to God." And Job is

  329. saying, "No, I don't need to return to

  330. God. I just need to find him."

  331. Chapter 23:3.

  332. Oh, that I knew where I might find him.

  333. That I might come even to his seat. I

  334. would lay my case before him and fill my

  335. mouth with arguments. I would know what

  336. he would answer me and understand what

  337. he would say to me. Would he contend

  338. with me in in the greatness of his

  339. power? No. He would pay attention to me.

  340. there an upright man could argue with

  341. him and I would be acquitted forever by

  342. my judge.

  343. Look at what he says in verse three.

  344. Oh that I knew where I might find him.

  345. Job wants to find God.

  346. Because Job thinks, "If I could find

  347. God,

  348. if I could just find God and show him my

  349. life and show him what I was doing, I

  350. would be acquitted and I would be

  351. counted as right before God." He's

  352. saying back to his friend, Elephaz,

  353. Elephaz, I don't need to return to God.

  354. I just need to find him. And if I can

  355. find him, I can then plead my case

  356. before him

  357. because he is a just judge.

  358. But even as Job hopes that he can bring

  359. his case before God, what does he say in

  360. verse eight? Behold, I go forward, but

  361. he is not there. And backward, but I do

  362. not perceive him. On the left hand, when

  363. he is working, I do not behold him. He

  364. turns to the right, but I do not see

  365. him.

  366. Are you longing to find God?

  367. Maybe that's your relationship with God.

  368. I'm looking for him,

  369. but I can't see him.

  370. Trying to find him, but where is he?

  371. I pray

  372. like I know I should,

  373. but it feels like they're hitting the

  374. wall.

  375. I read my Bible

  376. like I know I should,

  377. but nothing.

  378. I come to church

  379. like I know I should,

  380. but I can't even find him there.

  381. Where is my God?

  382. That's Job's relationship. And maybe

  383. it's yours.

  384. It's a very real experience.

  385. We're not perfect as Christians.

  386. Some Christians, you look at them and

  387. they seem all happy, clappy, and close

  388. to God. And sometimes you look at them

  389. with that bit of jealousy going, I wish

  390. I wish I could just have that. I wish I

  391. could find him. I wish I could be closer

  392. to him than I am. So the question is,

  393. what should you do when you're in that

  394. moment of discouragement? When you're

  395. praying and your prayers are hitting the

  396. wall. When you're singing and it doesn't

  397. really seem to mean anything. When

  398. you're coming to church and you're not

  399. really getting anything from the Lord.

  400. What do you do in those moments?

  401. Well, you look at what Job did in those

  402. moments.

  403. Verse 10, he says this,

  404. "But

  405. he knows the way that I take. When he

  406. has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

  407. My foot has held fast to his steps. I

  408. have kept his way and have not turned

  409. aside. I have not departed from the

  410. commandment of his lips. I've treasured

  411. the words of his mouth more than my

  412. portion of food.

  413. Job is saying, I've I've looked

  414. everywhere for God, but I cannot find

  415. him. And the answer that you might give

  416. yourself is this. Well, I've looked

  417. everywhere for God and I cannot find

  418. him. Therefore, what should I do? I

  419. should just give up. But what does Job

  420. do in these verses?

  421. In verse 11, Job says,

  422. "I have not turned aside from his ways."

  423. At the end of verse 12, Job says,

  424. "I have treasured the words of his mouth

  425. more than my portion of food."

  426. Think about that for a second.

  427. What's your favorite food?

  428. Steak

  429. medium rare

  430. chips.

  431. Garlic butter.

  432. Coke. Zero.

  433. No caffeine.

  434. What if

  435. I was to desire his word

  436. like I look at the plate sometimes?

  437. Do you know that feeling? You look at

  438. the plate and you're like, "Oh, this is

  439. going to be good." Do you know that

  440. feeling?

  441. What would it be like

  442. to like love his word that much

  443. to come in on Sunday morning and just be

  444. saying, "I just can't wait

  445. to get his word."

  446. See, Job is in the place where he's

  447. saying,

  448. "I cannot find God. I cannot see him. If

  449. he would just come, he would equip me."

  450. And yet he's still saying in that

  451. moment,

  452. but I'm going to keep going.

  453. I'm going to keep treasuring his word.

  454. Here's what I would say to you, brother

  455. and sister. If you're struggling to find

  456. God, keep going.

  457. Keep treasuring his word.

  458. I may have told you this before. This is

  459. going to happen over the years. I'm

  460. going to tell you stuff that I've told

  461. you before. You just smile and nod and

  462. say yes.

  463. But there's times where you might come

  464. in and I've come in and you feel like,

  465. you know what, I don't feel like singing

  466. this morning. Do you know what my trick

  467. is on that? When I don't feel like

  468. singing in the morning and I come in,

  469. here's my trick. I just sing.

  470. I keep singing. Why? Because he's

  471. commanded me to do it.

  472. So even though my feelings aren't

  473. matching right now at that moment,

  474. here's what I do. I just sing in

  475. obedience.

  476. I don't feel like it, Lord. Kind of

  477. feels hypocritical in this moment to

  478. open my mouth and sing. I've been angry

  479. this morning. I've been greedy this

  480. morning. We've been fighting this

  481. morning. You fill in the gap with

  482. whatever you want. And I just don't feel

  483. like singing, Lord, this morning. What

  484. should you do in that moment? sing. And

  485. here's what I found.

  486. My feelings, they catch up.

  487. And my love for the Lord, it catches up

  488. because it is a glorious thing to obey

  489. him. And when you obey him, in the end,

  490. you will find him.

  491. So that's our relationship with God.

  492. Some of us may need to return to God.

  493. Some of us may be in the place where

  494. we're trying to find God. But the third

  495. question I want to ask based on chapter

  496. 25 is this.

  497. Do you feel worthless before God?

  498. Some of us may need to return to God.

  499. Some of us may be searching for God. But

  500. do you feel worthless

  501. before God?

  502. The age that we're in is an age where

  503. everybody everybody looks like they are

  504. having an amazing time.

  505. You look at your own life and you're

  506. like

  507. worthless.

  508. Everybody else on the screen, everybody

  509. else that I look on the phone, they look

  510. amazing,

  511. but I feel worthless.

  512. buildad as he speaks

  513. to Job.

  514. He's not really going to try and

  515. encourage Job.

  516. One friend says, "Return to Job."

  517. Job says, "No, I need to find God."

  518. Bildad says, "Job, you're worthless

  519. before God."

  520. Look at his speech and I'm going to read

  521. the whole speech. Chapter 25:1.

  522. Then Bildad the Shuite answered and

  523. said, "Dminion and fear are with God. He

  524. makes peace in his high heaven.

  525. Is there any number to his armies? Upon

  526. whom does his light not arise? How then

  527. can man be be in the right before God?

  528. How can he who is born of woman be pure?

  529. Behold, even the moon is not bright and

  530. and the stars are not pure in his eyes.

  531. How much less man who is a maggot,

  532. and the son of man who is a worm.

  533. Buildad in this speech, before I get

  534. into the details, do you notice how long

  535. the speech is?

  536. Have you noticed that in the speeches

  537. that the friend's speeches they're just

  538. getting shorter and shorter and shorter?

  539. Bill, his first speech was two chapters.

  540. Then his next speech is one chapter. Now

  541. his third speech is six verses.

  542. And in a literary way, I think there is

  543. something happening here. And you kind

  544. of need to read between the lines, but I

  545. think it's fair to say, do you know when

  546. you're having a fight with someone

  547. and you're getting nowhere in the fight

  548. and the fight starts with loads of

  549. words, but then near the end of the

  550. fight, you start using fewer words and

  551. you start using harsher words.

  552. It might be something like this. You're

  553. fighting with a person and you're near

  554. the end and it's really wamping up. You

  555. know, the fight fight starts and you're

  556. all logical and you're all Christian and

  557. then suddenly it starts building up and

  558. building up and building up and building

  559. up and building up and then someone

  560. says, "Right, just look at me.

  561. Look at me.

  562. I don't care."

  563. And they walk off.

  564. I think something like this is

  565. happening. Frustration is building and

  566. building and building. And so Buildad is

  567. sick of Job and his plea of innocence

  568. and he's saying, "Look, build that."

  569. He's saying, "Look to Job." Buildad is

  570. saying, "Look to Job. God is majestic

  571. and you're a maggot.

  572. Just deal with it.

  573. God is high and mighty and you are a

  574. worm.

  575. Just deal with it."

  576. That's what he's saying. He's looking at

  577. the difference between God and man.

  578. Verse two, dominion and fear are with

  579. God. He makes peace in his high heaven.

  580. Is there any number to his armies upon

  581. whom does his light not arise? Job

  582. remember God is massive. He's big. He is

  583. power. He is dominion. He is he's the

  584. Lord of of heavenly hosts.

  585. But man, in verse six, he says, "How

  586. much less man who is a maggot

  587. and the son of man who is a worm?"

  588. This is what I would call

  589. his maggot theology,

  590. his worm theology.

  591. And unfortunately some Christians

  592. when they look at humans and look at

  593. mankind

  594. they have this type of maggot worm

  595. theology about human beings

  596. and it can stem from this place.

  597. We have to understand on the one hand

  598. that we as human beings are sinners.

  599. We are sinners

  600. from the moment that we're born. The

  601. scripture tells us in Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  602. that we are in Adam in sin, inherited

  603. sin.

  604. But then when we trust in Christ, we are

  605. then changed into Christ. We become in

  606. Christ. We inherit his righteousness.

  607. But we must remember as human beings

  608. this reality that we are sinners.

  609. Ephesians 2:3 says this, "We all once

    Ephesians 2:3

  610. lived in the passions of our flesh,

  611. carrying out the desires of the flesh

  612. and mind, and were by nature

  613. children of wrath.

  614. This is who we are by nature, children

  615. of wrath. This is who we are by nature.

  616. We are sinners. We have inherited the

  617. sin of Adam."

  618. And that is true. But what can happen to

  619. Christians is we can get into this kind

  620. of worthless maggot worm type theology

  621. where we say stuff like this. We are

  622. worms compared to God. We we are

  623. nothing.

  624. But that's not quite true. We are

  625. sinners.

  626. But do you remember the first page of

  627. the Bible what it says?

  628. We are made in the image of God.

  629. And when God made you in his image,

  630. he did not make a mistake.

  631. You are beautifully and wonderfully made

  632. warts and all.

  633. And yes, that image of God is distorted

  634. because of our sin.

  635. But it's not done away with.

  636. You are still valuable in in dignity and

  637. value and worth.

  638. We should always remember who we are.

  639. That yes, we are sinners who need to

  640. repent and trust in the Lord Jesus.

  641. And yes, we are deeply valued in the

  642. image of God.

  643. No, Billad, we're not maggots.

  644. We're not worms. Our

  645. God is majestic.

  646. We're sinners

  647. in need of grace.

  648. And this is the problem with the

  649. friends. They have no time for grace.

  650. Just give up, you maggot, you worm. And

  651. think about it. We see the image of God

  652. in people all the time. We know the

  653. image of God. We know the worth of

  654. people all the time. You think in this

  655. church about all the babies that are

  656. born, right?

  657. All the babies that are born in this

  658. church. It's phenomenal. And praise God

  659. for it. Can you imagine walking up to

  660. the crib and saying,

  661. "What a worthless worm.

  662. What a maggot."

  663. We don't say that. Why?

  664. Yes, they're born in sin,

  665. but man, isn't the image of God

  666. beautiful? beautifully

  667. and wonderfully made. They're sinners in

  668. need of grace. They're not maggots.

  669. And so that's what we understand.

  670. And so Job, he responds to this short,

  671. sharp rebuke. And he says these words,

  672. and it's hard sometimes to know the tone

  673. of what people are saying in the Bible,

  674. but I think I've got the tone of this

  675. one right. Here it is. Job 26:1.

    Job 26:1

  676. Then Job answered and said, this is

  677. after Job has just been called a maggot.

  678. Then Job answered and said, "How you

  679. have helped him who has no power. Oh,

  680. how you have saved the arm that has no

  681. strength. Oh, how you have counseledled

  682. him who has no wisdom and plentifully

  683. declared sound knowledge. With whose

  684. help have you uttered such words? And

  685. whose breath has come out from you?

  686. I think all of that is sarcasm.

  687. Oh, how helpful are you? Oh, you're so

  688. helpful to the powerless. Thank you so

  689. much, Build Dad. I'll keep that in mind.

  690. I'm a dirty worm maggot. Thank you.

  691. Oh, how you've saved the arm of the one

  692. who has no strength.

  693. Job comes back and he responds to this

  694. worthless

  695. theology

  696. with some sarcasm,

  697. but he also responds with praise.

  698. He responds with awe.

  699. And that leads us to the fourth question

  700. I want to ask about our relationship

  701. with God.

  702. Are you in awe of God

  703. in your relationship with God?

  704. Are you still in awe of him?

  705. Do you still sit in wonder of him and

  706. what he has done? Because Job in his

  707. suffering and in his heartache.

  708. If I was called a worm and a maggot,

  709. just put yourself in his shoes. You've

  710. lost everything.

  711. your friend comes to you and says,

  712. "You're a worm and a maggot."

  713. I'd forgive Job for using three verses

  714. or four to get back at him.

  715. But the rest of the verses, do you know

  716. what he does?

  717. He speaks in awe of God and his power

  718. and who he is.

  719. Look at verse seven. He talks about

  720. God's power in creation. He says this,

  721. "He, God," look at what he says. all

  722. that God has done. He stretches out the

  723. north over the void and hangs the earth

  724. on nothing. Verse eight, he binds up the

  725. waters in his thick clouds and the cloud

  726. is not split open under them. He covers

  727. the face of the full moon and spreads

  728. over it his cloud. He has inscribed a

  729. circle on the face of the waters and the

  730. boundary between the light and darkness.

  731. The pillars of heaven tremble and are

  732. astounded at his rebuke. By his power he

  733. is still the sea. By his understanding

  734. he is shattered Rahab. By his wind the

  735. heavens were made fair. His hand pierced

  736. the fleeing serpent. Behold these are

  737. but the outskirts of his ways.

  738. And how small a whisper do we hear of

  739. him?

  740. But the thunder of his power, who can

  741. understand?

  742. If you were in a fight, someone called

  743. you a maggot,

  744. wouldn't you just keep talking bad back

  745. at them?

  746. Job turns from his anger

  747. and he turns to the power of God

  748. and he says, "God has stretched out the

  749. heavens." Verse 7 to 11, he talks about

  750. God's power in creation. He's stretched

  751. out the heavens. He's covered the face

  752. of the earth.

  753. In verse 12 to13, he talks about God's

  754. power over his enemies.

  755. He has stilled the sea by his

  756. understanding. He shattered Rahab. Verse

  757. 13, by the wind the heavens were made

  758. fair. His hand pierced the fleeing

  759. serpent.

  760. Job is talking in a way where he has

  761. particular understanding of what God is

  762. doing, but he doesn't know the full

  763. extent of what God is really doing. It's

  764. like when Job said last week, "Oh, my

  765. redeemer lives."

  766. And you want to say to Job, "Yes,

  767. yes, your redeemer truly does live.

  768. He rose from the grave on the third

  769. day." And Job says these words and he

  770. says, "By his power, he's he's still the

  771. sea and he's shattered Rahab." And and

  772. some of that seems to be a picture of

  773. the Egyptians. In Isaiah 30:7, Rahab is

    Isaiah 30:7

  774. referred to as Egypt.

  775. God's power is still the sea. God's

  776. power has shattered the enemies.

  777. And God by his power has pierced the

  778. fleeing serpent.

  779. The serpent is the enemy.

  780. And Job says these words, but he does

  781. not know the full extent of these words

  782. because the serpent crusher came

  783. and crushed the enemy's head

  784. and in him we have redemption.

  785. And Job says these wonderful words,

  786. verse 14,

  787. these

  788. are but the outskirts

  789. of his ways.

  790. These are but the edges of his beauty

  791. and glory.

  792. When you see something amazing and

  793. wonderful and marvelous,

  794. a waterfall, and you stand in awe of it,

  795. you're just on the outskirts.

  796. You haven't seen anything really of

  797. God's glory and awe and power.

  798. Is your relationship with God one where

  799. you still have awe of him?

  800. Do you remember when you were first a

  801. Christian?

  802. when you first became a Christian

  803. and you just loved everything about him,

  804. like you're you're like coming to your

  805. friends. Did you see this verse?

  806. For God so loved the world. Did you know

  807. that? Like he so loved the world.

  808. Remember when you were excited about

  809. that?

  810. That he gave his own. Did you see this?

  811. And then Bible study comes up and you're

  812. like scrambling to get your Bible and

  813. you're rushing to get in because you

  814. can't get enough of God. Do you remember

  815. what it was like?

  816. And you'd sing a new song and you'd be

  817. like, "That's amazing.

  818. Amazing Grace." Did Did you hear this

  819. song? Amazing Grace. Anybody heard this?

  820. Yes. We've been singing it for years,

  821. but don't worry, you'll get bored by it

  822. soon.

  823. How awful it is

  824. when we see a new Christian. and we just

  825. wait for the ah they'll be like one of

  826. us soon. No, I hope they'll never be.

  827. I hope they'll always be in awe of God.

  828. We need to pray that for our lives that

  829. would always be in awe of God.

  830. And this is where Job is at even in his

  831. suffering.

  832. Are you in awe of God?

  833. And that leads to our last question

  834. about her relationship with God.

  835. That last question is helped by chapter

  836. 27.

  837. And the question is this. Are you right

  838. before God?

  839. Chapter 27:E1 Job says these words. And

  840. Job again took up his discourse and

  841. said, "As God lives,

  842. who has taken away my right, the

  843. Almighty who has made my soul bitter, as

  844. long as my breath is in me, and the

  845. spirit of God is in my nostrils,

  846. my lips will not speak falsehood,

  847. and my tongue will not utter deceit.

  848. Far be it from me to say that you are

  849. right.

  850. Till I die,

  851. I will not put away my integrity from

  852. me. I hold fast my righteousness

  853. and will not let it go.

  854. My heart does not reproach me

  855. for any of my days.

  856. Do you hear the confidence in Job?

  857. Do you hear the confidence that Job has

  858. in how he is going to live rightly

  859. before God?

  860. He makes this oath promise in verse two.

  861. as God lives

  862. and the Almighty who's made my soul

  863. bitter. As long as my breath is mine and

  864. the spirit of God is in my nostrils, as

  865. God lives, he's making an oath here. As

  866. long as I am breathing,

  867. as true as it is that God lives, here is

  868. what I am going to do with my life no

  869. matter what happens to me in my

  870. suffering.

  871. This is what you should say Christian.

  872. No matter what is hurting you in life

  873. right now,

  874. no matter what suffering or pain you are

  875. going through right now, make this

  876. determination by the power of the Holy

  877. Spirit, as long as I have breath in my

  878. lungs, I'm going to serve him.

  879. I may not understand him. I may not know

  880. his ways, but I'm going to keep going

  881. and following him all the days of my

  882. life.

  883. And he says it with such confidence

  884. because he talks in verse four and says,

  885. "My lips will not speak falsehood all

  886. the days of his life." The end of verse

  887. 5, he says, "I will hold on to my

  888. integrity."

  889. And verse six, I will hold fast to my

  890. righteousness and not let it go.

  891. Confidence

  892. in his stand before God.

  893. Now, I must say as I see Job's

  894. confidence here,

  895. I don't know if I share the same

  896. confidence

  897. in my words.

  898. Like, what he's saying is absolutely

  899. incredible.

  900. I commit to not speaking falsehood

  901. for all of my days.

  902. I commit to holding on to integrity for

  903. all of my days.

  904. I commit to holding on to my

  905. righteousness

  906. for all of my days.

  907. I would make that commitment about my

  908. lips and fail on the same day.

  909. So I don't know if I can put my

  910. confidence in the same place that Job

  911. does in relation to my behavior. I don't

  912. know if I can say the same thing that

  913. Job knows of himself that he is

  914. blameless and upright and fears God and

  915. turns away from evil.

  916. I don't know if I can talk about my own

  917. righteousness in this way.

  918. But I know where I can put my

  919. confidence.

  920. My confidence is in this.

  921. He,

  922. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  923. he is righteous.

  924. He is good.

  925. He is just.

  926. And when I trust in him, his

  927. righteousness, it's mine.

  928. Abraham in Genesis 15:6 it says of him

    Genesis 15:6

  929. he believed and God credited to him as

  930. righteousness. Where did Abraham's

  931. righteousness come from? It came from

  932. faith in Christ.

  933. So I can believe and hold fast to my

  934. righteousness in Christ for all the days

  935. of my life. Not because I am strong, but

  936. because he is. And I can say the words

  937. in Galatians 2 20. I have been crucified

  938. with Christ.

  939. And it is no longer I who live but

  940. Christ who lives in me. Therefore, I can

  941. have confidence that I stand righteous

  942. not because of myself but because of

  943. Christ.

  944. If you are a believer this morning,

  945. no matter what you're feeling,

  946. worthless,

  947. angry, whatever it is,

  948. know this believer. Here's your

  949. relationship.

  950. You are in Christ.

  951. You are righteous in him.

  952. And nobody can take that away from you.

  953. That is who you are.

  954. That is your relationship with him.

  955. You are righteous in Christ.

  956. Live for him.

  957. Praise him in those things.

  958. One last random question.

  959. Where's Zofar?

  960. His three friends. Elephas

  961. Bildad Zofar

  962. and the conversations they got shorter

  963. and shorter, didn't they? And the

  964. friends, they got more and frustrated

  965. after more frustrated, didn't they?

  966. How do you get shorter

  967. than six verses of buildad?

  968. How'd you get shorter than that?

  969. Here's what you do in an argument.

  970. you walk away.

  971. That's exactly what Zofar seemed to do.

  972. It's no longer in the pages of scripture

  973. reading between the lines. Why?

  974. Because his theology

  975. has no time for an innocent man who

  976. suffers. His theology has no time for

  977. the gospel. Let's pray.

  978. Lord, we thank you for your word this

  979. morning. We pray that you would impress

  980. it into our hearts and lives

  981. in your name, Lord Jesus. Amen. Let's

  982. stand and sing as we prepare our hearts

  983. for
