  1. Good morning. Please take your Bibles

  2. and open them up to Job chapter 28.

    Job 28 chapter mention

  3. Please take your Bibles and open them up

  4. to Job

    Job 28 chapter mention

  5. chapter 28.

  6. going to pray and ask that the Lord will

  7. bless his word to us this morning. Let's

  8. pray together.

  9. Lord, we

  10. begin the sermon in the same way we do

  11. every single Sunday.

  12. Please open your Bibles.

  13. And Lord, the reason we say that is

  14. because I know and understand that I

  15. don't have much to say on my own.

  16. But we trust Lord that you will speak.

  17. We trust, Lord, that you have something

  18. to say in your word to us, each and

  19. every single one of us this morning. And

  20. I pray that we prepare our hearts to

  21. hear your word speak to us this morning.

  22. Isaiah 40:8, the grass withers, the

    Isaiah 40:8

  23. flower fades, but the word of our God

  24. stands forever.

  25. And Lord, I pray that as we hear your

  26. word, we would hear it as the truth that

  27. needs to penetrate our hearts and lives

  28. now.

  29. And Lord, as I read it,

  30. may we know what a privilege it is to

  31. have this word, your word, in our hands.

  32. It's in your name, Jesus, that we pray

  33. all these things.

  34. Amen.

  35. As we think of Job chap 28, what I want

  36. to do this morning is read to you the

  37. first 11 verses. And as I read to you

  38. the first 11 verses of this chapter, I

  39. want you to ask, what is he saying?

  40. What is he saying? Let me read to you

  41. God's word. Job chapter 28 verse 1.

    Job 28:1

  42. Surely

  43. there is a mine for silver and a place

  44. for gold that they refine.

  45. Iron is taken out of the earth and

  46. copper is smelted from the ore.

  47. Man puts an end to darkness and searches

  48. out to the farthest limit. The ore in

  49. gloom and deep darkness.

  50. He opens shafts in a valley away from

  51. where anyone lives.

  52. They are forgotten by travelers. They

  53. hang in the air far away from mankind.

  54. They swing to and fro.

  55. As for the earth, out of it comes bread,

  56. but underneath it t is turned up as by

  57. fire. Its stones are the place of

  58. sapphires,

  59. and it has dust of gold. That path no

  60. bird of prey knows, and the falcon's eye

  61. has not seen it. The proud beasts have

  62. not trodden it. The lion has not passed

  63. over it.

  64. Man puts his hand to the flinty rock and

  65. overturns mountains by the roots.

  66. He cuts out channels in the rocks and

  67. his eyes

  68. and his eyes see his eye sees every

  69. precious thing. He dams up the streams

  70. so that they do not trickle and the

  71. thing that is hidden he brings out to

  72. light.

  73. This is God's word and we're going to

  74. look at the whole of chapter 28. But I

  75. wanted us to look at the first 11 verses

  76. and ask the question, what is he saying?

  77. So what is he saying?

  78. That's my job every Sunday to look at

  79. this and say, what is he saying?

  80. And I looked at it and I said, "What is

  81. he saying?" a number of times. What is

  82. he saying?

  83. And as you look at the book of Job, we

  84. think we know and understand the book of

  85. Job. But when you when you look at some

  86. of the chapters in the book of Job,

  87. there's there's complicated images and

  88. pictures and and and it's poetry and and

  89. you're wondering what on earth is going

  90. on. And so what's happened in the book

  91. of Job so far is that we've finished

  92. those three conversations between Job

  93. and his friends where they're trying to

  94. understand Job's suffering and what's

  95. going on there. And then we have this

  96. strange chapter 28 that kind of pops out

  97. in the middle of the book. And you

  98. wonder, people debate, is this even Job

  99. speaking or is it the narrator, the

  100. storyteller who is speaking in this

  101. chapter? There's loads of pages about

  102. that debate. But what I'll say is this.

  103. It doesn't matter so much as to who is

  104. saying these words, but but what is he

  105. saying? What does he mean when he's

  106. saying all these words? these poetic

  107. words.

  108. Here's what I think.

  109. I think what he is saying is this.

  110. People are amazing.

  111. Stay with me. I think he's saying that

  112. people are amazing.

  113. In the same way that I said this past

  114. week, people are amazing.

  115. Me and Simeon, we visited Manchester

  116. this last week. I won't bore you with

  117. all the stories. It was fantastic.

  118. But you walk up to Old Trafford.

  119. It's a stadium built for 74,000

  120. people.

  121. And I look at that stadium and I say,

  122. "People are amazing

  123. to be able to draw this up, plan this

  124. up, and build this whole thing.

  125. And then the following day we went to a

  126. place called the Trafford Center,

  127. one of the biggest shopping centers in

  128. Europe. Over 200 shops, 60 restaurants,

  129. 10,000 car park spaces.

  130. And I look at this building, I'm like,

  131. people are amazing at what they can do.

  132. And then we walked into a shop in the

  133. Trafford Center. And as I was walking

  134. into the shop, it was this uh watch

  135. shop. And as me and Simeon were walking

  136. in, the guy asked suspiciously, "Can can

  137. can I help you?" I took a bit of offense

  138. to that. I was wondering what what's

  139. wrong with me or whatever. And then I

  140. looked down and I saw one of the most

  141. beautiful watches there. £8,000.

  142. That's why he didn't want me in there.

  143. He knew I wasn't buying. £8,000.

  144. I look at it and I'm saying, "This is

  145. beautiful. People are amazing." We

  146. walked out of the Trafford Center and

  147. you look to the left and I saw this

  148. building kind of this slanted building

  149. stretching out into the sky. I'm like,

  150. "What is that?"

  151. It's this indoor ski slope,

  152. the biggest in the UK.

  153. Like, wow. People are amazing

  154. in terms of what they can build. They

  155. are amazing. And there's nothing wrong

  156. with us noticing that because you would

  157. expect people to be amazing, wouldn't

  158. you? Because people are made in the

  159. image of God. Last week, we heard of a

  160. guy who said, "No, people are just

  161. maggots. They're just worms." No,

  162. they're not maggots. No, they're not

  163. worms. Were made in the image of God.

  164. And you'd expect people to be made in

  165. the image of God to be able to do

  166. amazing things.

  167. And so what I was able to see is that

  168. people are amazing in terms of what they

  169. can build their ingenuity.

  170. What the writer is saying here is that

  171. our people are amazing not specifically

  172. in what they can build but people are

  173. amazing in terms of what they can find

  174. their ingenuity

  175. the technology of the day to to mine

  176. these precious things that are in the

  177. earth. Here's what he says. Verse one of

  178. 28. Surely there is a mine for silver

  179. and a place for gold that they refine.

  180. People are amazing. They they they mine

  181. down into the ground and they find

  182. silver and they find gold. They find

  183. these amazing precious things. And then

  184. in verse two, they find iron and copper

  185. and they're able to smelt the copper

  186. into ore.

  187. People are amazing. They're able to dig

  188. down deep and find these things. And

  189. then verse three, he says, "Man puts an

  190. end to darkness and searches out to the

  191. farthest limit the ore in gloom and deep

  192. darkness." Man is amazing. He's able to

  193. put an end to the darkness and dig down

  194. deep with the technology of the day and

  195. get the ore from the ground.

  196. They're able to not only find silver and

  197. gold and iron and copper and ore and all

  198. these precious things, but in verse six

  199. it says about people, it's stones are

  200. the place of sapphires and it has dust

  201. of gold. So silver, gold, iron, copper,

  202. stones, sapphires.

  203. This is what people are able to find.

  204. They are amazing. They're able to find

  205. all these precious and wonderful things.

  206. And you know what? People are more

  207. amazing than the animals

  208. because in verse 7 it says, "You have

  209. this bird, this falcon." And have any of

  210. you seen a falcon, a bird wearing a gold

  211. necklace? No. Because they can't find

  212. the precious gold that human beings can

  213. find.

  214. And then he says in verse 8 about the

  215. proud beasts and the lion on the ground.

  216. So you have the falcon in the air and

  217. you never see him wearing a gold

  218. necklace and you have the lion on the

  219. ground and and yet he can't find these

  220. precious things because you've never

  221. seen a lion wearing a diamond ring cuz

  222. they can't find these things. But

  223. people, they can dig down deep and they

  224. can find these precious things.

  225. People are

  226. amazing.

  227. And that is a a good thing for us to

  228. notice that people are made in the image

  229. of God. And that people are amazing not

  230. only in what they can build, but they're

  231. amazing in terms of what they can find.

  232. If if humanity, if people put their mind

  233. to it, they can dig down deep and find

  234. something that is very precious. gold,

  235. silver, iron, copper, stones, sapphires,

  236. more than what any of the animals can

  237. find.

  238. People are amazing.

  239. But we do need to be careful with that

  240. truth, don't we?

  241. We need to understand that we will

  242. recognize that people are amazing made

  243. in the image of God. That God

  244. beautifully and wonderfully created you

  245. and me. And we recognize common grace

  246. that people can do these wonderful

  247. things.

  248. But you know what I also learned in

  249. Manchester?

  250. People are fools too.

  251. We were um standing at the back where

  252. the players would come out of the

  253. stadium

  254. and there were grown men

  255. standing at the railings

  256. pushing children away

  257. to get a signature from another grown

  258. man who kicks a leather ball around a

  259. pitch.

  260. Yes, we should recognize the skill of

  261. these people and it's wonderful and it's

  262. amazing.

  263. But isn't it foolishness

  264. to worship those people

  265. to worship the created thing rather than

  266. the creator?

  267. And so in one sense, yes, we should

  268. recognize that that people are

  269. wonderful, made in the image of God, but

  270. we always need to be careful

  271. that we don't worship people.

  272. The the beauty that we see in people,

  273. the beauty that we see in creation

  274. should always point us forward to the

  275. creator.

  276. So that when we see an amazing goal or

  277. whatever it might be that really tickles

  278. your fancy that you think that is

  279. unreal. I can't believe I've just seen

  280. that. It should lead you and point you

  281. to the one who's created that person and

  282. made that person in that way.

  283. And you know when we see someone, you

  284. know, admiring a player like that and

  285. kicking children away, we kind of Gina,

  286. can you imagine him like worshiping

  287. people like that?

  288. But we're all the same, aren't we?

  289. I mean, think about children for a

  290. second.

  291. Children,

  292. they are amazing.

  293. And I don't want all the children to get

  294. too big heads here now, but you are.

  295. Children are absolutely amazing.

  296. We should acknowledge that. We should

  297. thank God for that.

  298. But they should never be worshiped.

  299. They're amazing as creation,

  300. but they are terrible gods.

  301. They should never be worshiped. They

  302. should be loved and cherished. We should

  303. thank God for them, but we're not called

  304. to worship them. And so, we need to be

  305. careful in our lives. And you know, this

  306. is for parents.

  307. This is for grandparents. This is for

  308. those of you who have nieces and

  309. nephews.

  310. Man, they are amazing, aren't they? The

  311. children that we have in our lives.

  312. But we do our children a disservice

  313. if we worship them

  314. and don't tell them, "Hey, listen,

  315. buddy. Look at me. There's someone far

  316. better than you. It's Jesus.

  317. and you need to follow him and you need

  318. to trust in him and that example for our

  319. children will serve them far better than

  320. us worshiping our children.

  321. So yes, we acknowledge with the writer

  322. that that people are amazing and we

  323. acknowledge that people are amazing in

  324. what they build and people are amazing

  325. in what they find and and the people

  326. around us, even the children and all the

  327. people we have, they are amazing.

  328. But while people are amazing at finding

  329. precious things like gold and silver and

  330. jewels and stones,

  331. there's one thing, the most precious

  332. thing in the world

  333. that people find it hard to find and

  334. they cannot find on their own. And that

  335. is wisdom.

  336. And this is the point of what he's

  337. saying in this chapter. He says, listen

  338. to verse 12.

  339. But where shall wisdom be found? And

  340. where is the place of understanding? Man

  341. does not know its worth, and is it is it

  342. is not found in the land of the living?

  343. The deep says it is not in me. And the

  344. sea says it is not with me. It cannot be

  345. bought for gold, and silver cannot be

  346. weighed as its price. It cannot be

  347. valued in the gold of oper. It's its

  348. precious onyx or sapphire. Gold and

  349. glass cannot equal it. Nor can it be

  350. exchanged for jewels of fine gold. No

  351. mention shall be made of of coral or

  352. crystal. The price of wisdom is above

  353. pearls.

  354. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it.

  355. Nor can it be valued in pure gold. For

  356. where then does wisdom come?

  357. And where is the place of understanding?

  358. It is hidden from the eyes of all the

  359. living and concealed from the birds of

  360. the air. Abaden and death say we have

  361. heard a rumor of it with our ears.

  362. You see in the first 11 verses, what is

  363. he saying? People are amazing because

  364. they can find these amazing jewels.

  365. But in verses 12 to 22, what is he

  366. saying?

  367. People are amazing at finding things,

  368. but they're not amazing at finding

  369. wisdom.

  370. Wisdom is hard for people to find. And

  371. there's three there's four reasons for

  372. that. Reason number one is people don't

  373. know where to find it.

  374. The reason wisdom is hard to find is

  375. because people don't know where to find

  376. it. Verse 12.

  377. But where shall wisdom be found? And

  378. where is the place of understanding? You

  379. see, people are are amazing. They're so

  380. smart. They can build things. They're

  381. wonderful. They're great. But there is

  382. one thing that they cannot find on their

  383. own. And that is true wisdom. Not

  384. talking about worldly wisdom, but true

  385. wisdom. And the reason they find it hard

  386. to find true wisdom is because what the

  387. word wisdom means.

  388. The word wisdom is the word hma. And

  389. that word hma is this word that brings

  390. order back into the chaos of our lives.

  391. Wisdom in this sense is to have the

  392. knowledge but not only have the

  393. knowledge, you have the wisdom to apply

  394. that knowledge into your life. That's

  395. hma. And when you apply that knowledge

  396. into your life, your life should go from

  397. chaos to order.

  398. So here's what will help us describe the

  399. word wisdom.

  400. Our house right now, it's absolute

  401. chaos. My house, absolute chaos. Why?

  402. because we're getting construction done

  403. in our house.

  404. Now, the builders actually did create

  405. the chaos, but we'll put that aside for

  406. the second. What are the builders doing

  407. right now?

  408. They're using their knowledge and

  409. applying that knowledge, which is

  410. wisdom, and they're going to take that

  411. chaos that is our house, and they'll

  412. hopefully with their knowledge and with

  413. their wisdom bring order to the chaos.

  414. Hopefully.

  415. paid enough money for it to be hope. So

  416. hopefully

  417. and that's what wisdom does.

  418. True wisdom helps bring order back into

  419. the chaos of our lives. What's the chaos

  420. of Job's life right now? The chaos of

  421. Job's life is suffering. And he cannot

  422. understand it. And it's just all over

  423. the place. And what they're trying to

  424. do, Job and his friends with their words

  425. is they're trying with their words to

  426. bring order back into the chaos of his

  427. life. But the problem is though people

  428. are great at finding precious jewels and

  429. all silver and gold. People are great

  430. are making themselves rich. People are

  431. great at building buildings. What people

  432. are not great at is finding true wisdom.

  433. And the reason number one is they don't

  434. know where to find it. And number two is

  435. they do not value it. They do not value

  436. true wisdom. Verse 13, man does not know

  437. its worth. It is not found in the land

  438. of the living. The the deep says it is

  439. not in me and the sea says it is not

  440. with me.

  441. See what it says in verse 13. Man does

  442. not know its worth. Man does know the

  443. worth of worldly wisdom, but man does

  444. not know the worth. People do not know

  445. the worth of true wisdom, true godly

  446. wisdom.

  447. I often laugh at people when um you know

  448. it gets into the conversation that that

  449. me and Lana lived in Chicago for three

  450. and a half years and it's all great, the

  451. conversation's going really well and I

  452. say all the sites in Chicago and

  453. whatever and then they ask me the

  454. question, "Well, what did you do there?"

  455. And I know what's coming because I'm

  456. going to have to tell them what I did

  457. there.

  458. I say to them, sometimes confidently,

  459. other times I'll admit sheepishly

  460. because you just don't want I just don't

  461. want to get into it again. What did you

  462. do there? I don't I just don't want to

  463. look like a weirdo and a freak again.

  464. What did you do there? I studied

  465. theology.

  466. And I know I'm going to have to help

  467. them through the conversation and get

  468. out of the awkwardness. Oh, that's

  469. great.

  470. I studied theology.

  471. But there's some people who will look at

  472. me and say, they won't say it because

  473. they're Irish,

  474. but they will think it.

  475. What did you do that for?

  476. Three and a half years

  477. studying one book largely.

  478. Three and a half years you spent.

  479. Could that possibly be worth all the

  480. time and the money?

  481. And I would say absolutely yes. His

  482. wisdom is valuable.

  483. But people don't get how valuable the

  484. wisdom of God is. People would rather

  485. have gold and sapphires and stones and

  486. pearls and diamonds.

  487. The scripture would tell us God's wisdom

  488. is far greater than all of that.

  489. People cannot find God's wisdom because

  490. they don't know where to find it. They

  491. also don't know its value. And number

  492. three, people cannot buy the wisdom.

  493. Verse 15, it cannot be bought for gold

  494. and silver cannot be weighed as its

  495. price.

  496. You see, this is the problem with godly

  497. wisdom.

  498. You cannot buy it with your gold. All

  499. the gold that you find, it's actually

  500. worthless when it comes to having godly

  501. wisdom. People think that if I just come

  502. on, there must be a little bit of you

  503. that thinks

  504. if I was Elon Musk and had all that

  505. money, there's a little bit of you that

  506. thinks problem solved, right? Just a

  507. little bit. I could just buy out

  508. everything and my problems are solved.

  509. But the answer is you cannot buy wisdom,

  510. godly wisdom, true wisdom with money.

  511. People

  512. find it hard to find wisdom because they

  513. don't value it. They can't buy it. And

  514. finally, number four, they look in the

  515. wrong place for it. Verse 20, again, he

  516. asks that key question. From where then

  517. does wisdom come? And where is the place

  518. of understanding? It is hidden from the

  519. eyes of all living and concealed from

  520. the birds of the air. Abaden and death

  521. say we have heard a rumor of it with our

  522. ears. He asks that key question again.

  523. Oh, human beings are amazing at finding

  524. gold and silver and all that stuff, but

  525. where does wisdom come from? Can you

  526. find that?

  527. And the problem is people are are

  528. looking in the wrong places. It's hard

  529. to find wisdom in in the land of the

  530. living. It's it's hidden there from from

  531. the eyes of all the living. And it's

  532. hard to find wisdom in the land of the

  533. dead. Verse 22. Even even death says or

  534. abadin, that's the the word for kind of

  535. destruction. It's linked with sh which

  536. is the place of the dead. Even if you go

  537. to the place of the dead, so you go to

  538. the land of the living, you cannot find

  539. it. You go to the place of the dead, you

  540. cannot find it there because there's

  541. only a rumor there in that place. Maybe

  542. there is this thing called wisdom, is

  543. there?

  544. And this is the reason people in this

  545. world, oh, they can get rich,

  546. but they cannot truly get rich with

  547. wisdom.

  548. And I do believe that people in this

  549. world are looking for true wisdom and

  550. they seek to find it in other places.

  551. I call it um podcast wisdom.

  552. Searching for wisdom with podcast

  553. wisdom.

  554. The most popular podcasts in this world

  555. right now

  556. are wisdom podcasts.

  557. They're really self-help podcasts,

  558. but they know it that won't sell. But

  559. that's what they are. They're trying to

  560. engage with the chaos of people's world

  561. and they're trying to organize that

  562. chaos with wisdom.

  563. Okay? So, you've chaos somewhere in your

  564. life, your money or your marriage or

  565. some kind of relationship, friendship or

  566. whatever, and they'll talk about that

  567. topic, the chaos of your life, and

  568. they'll try and put wisdom to that and

  569. give you order. And those podcasts are

  570. really popular. And it's not that

  571. there's not some truth in what you hear.

  572. Why? Because we know and recognize that

  573. all truth, all real truth is God's

  574. truth. So it's not that you cannot hear

  575. some wisdom from those things.

  576. But that wisdom in those places, what is

  577. it missing?

  578. It doesn't have the foundation of God's

  579. word.

  580. So how powerful is the wisdom?

  581. Not powerful at all.

  582. And unfortunately, I think that we can

  583. get tempted in this way that we spend

  584. most of our time

  585. listening to the podcast wisdom of this

  586. world and very little of our time

  587. listening to God's wisdom for our lives.

  588. And it's God's wisdom that will lead you

  589. home. It's God's wisdom that will

  590. properly fix and help put order back

  591. into the chaos of your life.

  592. That's the wisdom we're to seek.

  593. Are you never to live a listen to a

  594. podcast again? That's not what I'm

  595. saying.

  596. But what I am saying is if that is

  597. replacing the wisdom of God and his

  598. word, you have got a problem.

  599. And if you're not filtering the things

  600. that you hear in this world, the wisdom

  601. of this world through the wisdom of God,

  602. then you are in trouble.

  603. So as God's people,

  604. where do we find wisdom?

  605. We don't find it in the treasures of the

  606. world.

  607. We don't find it in the place of death.

  608. We cannot buy it. Where do we find

  609. wisdom?

  610. True wisdom

  611. is found

  612. in God.

  613. And that's the whole point of this

  614. chapter. That's where he has been

  615. leading us to in this chapter. Verse 23.

  616. God understands the way to it and he

  617. knows its place. God understands the way

  618. to wisdom and he knows the place for

  619. wisdom.

  620. For he looks to the ends of the earth

  621. and sees everything under the heavens.

  622. When he gave to the wind its weight and

  623. a portion the waters by measure.

  624. When he made a decree for the rain and a

  625. way for the lightning of the of the

  626. thunder. Then he saw it and declared it.

  627. He established it and searched it out.

  628. If you want to know the way of wisdom,

  629. where do you go? Verse 23, you go to

  630. God. If you want to put order back into

  631. the chaos that is your life, where do

  632. you go for this wisdom? You go to God.

  633. And someone might say, "Well, why should

  634. I go to God?" And in these verses, what

  635. you've got is is almost a shortened

  636. version of God's CV. This is why you

  637. should go to God. Verse 24. One reason

  638. you should go to God, he sees everything

  639. in every possible way. This is why we we

  640. love these these wisdom podcasts because

  641. these people can can see the world in in

  642. a different way that we don't see it.

  643. But all that they see is a small little

  644. portion of the world. Wouldn't you love

  645. to go to the God who sees everything for

  646. your wisdom and direction in this world?

  647. That's part of his CV. Verse 25, he gave

  648. weight to the wind. Verse 26, he decreed

  649. the rain and the lightning.

  650. And verse 27, he saw it. Wisdom. He

  651. declared it. He established it. He

  652. searched it out. If you want wisdom for

  653. your life, you go to God.

  654. So, let me ask you this.

  655. What's your chaos

  656. right now?

  657. What's your chaos?

  658. I think all of us, if we're honest, have

  659. a little bit of chaos going on in our

  660. lives.

  661. I'd love us to be a church. That's okay.

  662. We're telling people, "Guys, I I have a

  663. bit of chaos going on in my life in this

  664. area right now. Will you pray?"

  665. And I'd love us just to be able to say

  666. that.

  667. So, what is your chaos?

  668. Is your chaos

  669. marriage chaos

  670. right now? Is Is that your chaos?

  671. You can't quite figure things out

  672. together.

  673. You're not in a good place and you know

  674. it.

  675. Is that your chaos that you need fixed?

  676. Maybe it's your finance.

  677. Things aren't going the way you want it

  678. to go with your finance. It's all over

  679. the place. Is is that your chaos?

  680. Maybe it's your parenting.

  681. You just feel useless right now.

  682. Every Here's the secret. Every parent

  683. has felt that way. Every parent feels

  684. that way. Inadequate,

  685. useless,

  686. not able to know what we're doing.

  687. Making it up as we go along.

  688. I mean, if there's one time to say amen,

  689. that's the place. But anyway, it's it's

  690. it's chaos.

  691. All of us have some chaos. What's yours?

  692. And when you realize your chaos

  693. and then you look at verse 23,

  694. it's like fresh water to your soul.

  695. God understands the way to it

  696. and he knows its place.

  697. Lord, my life is all over the place,

  698. chaotic.

  699. And that verse comes into you and says,

  700. God says to you, I know the way.

  701. Come with me.

  702. I know the way.

  703. I'll give rest to your weary soul.

  704. I'll make your crooked path straight.

  705. I'll lead you and guide you by my word.

  706. I will sustain you until I take you

  707. home.

  708. Come to me for wisdom, God says.

  709. And then finally, we have this place

  710. where God speaks in this book in verse

  711. 28

  712. and he speaks and he tells us what

  713. wisdom truly is. He gives us a

  714. definition of what true wisdom is.

  715. And in giving us the definition of what

  716. true wisdom is, it is God who speaks in

  717. this verse.

  718. Now, if Job were a mountain,

  719. if Job were a mountain, do you know what

  720. the top of the mountain would be?

  721. Chapter 28.

  722. And do you know what the tippy top?

  723. That's what I used to say when I was

  724. younger. Do you know what the tippy top

  725. of that mountain would be? The very,

  726. very, very, very, very, very, very top

  727. of that mountain. Do you know what it

  728. would be? Be Job 28:28.

    Job 28:28

  729. It's where God speaks. And when God

  730. speaks, we must listen. God speaks at at

  731. the start of the book of Job. God speaks

  732. at the end of the book of Job. And and

  733. in order to understand the book of Job,

  734. we need to listen to when God speaks. He

  735. speaks at the beginning. He's going to

  736. speak at the end. But he also speaks in

  737. this verse in the middle and tells us

  738. exactly what the wisdom is that we need

  739. for the chaos in our lives.

  740. speaks and tells Job, "Here's the wisdom

  741. you need for the chaos of your suffering

  742. in your life."

  743. And what's the wisdom? Verse 28. And he

  744. said to man, "Behold, the fear of the

  745. Lord that is wisdom,

  746. and to turn away from evil is

  747. understanding."

  748. The fear of the Lord. You want to put

  749. order back into the chaos of your life.

  750. The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom.

  751. Turning away from evil is understanding.

  752. Now, put yourselves in Job's shoes

  753. hearing these words.

  754. If I was Job hearing these words, do you

  755. know what I wouldn't be? I would not be

  756. happy hearing these words.

  757. So God, the answer

  758. I've gone back and forth with my I've

  759. lost first I've lost everything.

  760. Then there's seven days of silence. Then

  761. for days we've been going back and forth

  762. with my friends trying to find out this

  763. wisdom. Zofar has ran off away from me.

  764. He doesn't want anything to do with me

  765. anymore. And I'm searching for this

  766. wisdom. And you are going to tell me

  767. that the tippy tippy top of the

  768. mountain, the thing I need to have

  769. is this.

  770. What I'm doing already,

  771. what I've been doing for my whole life.

  772. How did the book of Job describe Job?

  773. Three times.

  774. He is one who fears God and turns away

  775. from evil. He is one who fears God and

  776. turns away from evil. He is one who

  777. fears God and turns away from evil. And

  778. now he is in the place of his suffering.

  779. And he finally comes to God. And he's

  780. looking for the answer in his suffering.

  781. And what's the answer?

  782. Job.

  783. Fear God.

  784. Turn away from evil.

  785. And that is going to put order back into

  786. your chaos.

  787. You see, we want practical answers

  788. in the chaos of our lives.

  789. We want actual tangible practical

  790. answers to the chaos of suffering.

  791. Practical tangible answers to the chaos

  792. of our marriage. Practical tangible

  793. answers to the chaos of our finances,

  794. you put in the blank. We want those

  795. answers.

  796. And whatever chaos you've named in your

  797. life, here is what God would say to you

  798. this morning. Whatever is frustrating

  799. you, whatever is angering you, whatever

  800. is turning you away from God and his

  801. people right now, here is what God would

  802. say to you this morning. Here's what

  803. you're to do. This is the wisdom of God.

  804. Fear him.

  805. Turn away from evil. His answer to your

  806. chaos

  807. is, "Bow your head, my child

  808. and repent of your sin,

  809. and keep going for me."

  810. That's the wisdom of God.

  811. Sometimes

  812. God doesn't give us the answers that we

  813. want, but he gives us the answer that we

  814. need in our lives.

  815. And all of this wisdom is pursued and

  816. found in God

  817. because God came down in the flesh

  818. and his name is Jesus

  819. and we are told that he is the wisdom of

  820. God.

  821. If you want to find wisdom,

  822. bow before him, fear him, and turn away

  823. from your sin.

  824. I want to read to you some verses as we

  825. close.

  826. Feel free to just listen to them or

  827. close your eyes if you'd like. But I

  828. believe that this these verses in the

  829. New Testament tell us where wisdom may

  830. be found.

  831. 1 Corinthians 1 verse 26. This is God's

    1 Corinthians 1:26

  832. word.

  833. For consider your calling, brothers.

  834. Not many of you were wise according to

  835. worldly standards.

  836. Not many of you were powerful. Not many

  837. of you were of noble birth. But God

  838. chose what is foolish in the world to

  839. shame the wise. God chose what is weak

  840. in the world to shame the strong. God

  841. chose what is low and despised in the

  842. world, even the things that are not, to

  843. bring to nothing the things that are,

  844. so that no human being might boast in

  845. the presence of God.

  846. And because of him,

  847. you are in Christ Jesus

  848. who became to us

  849. wisdom from God,

  850. righteousness, and sanctification, and

  851. redemption,

  852. so that as it is written, let the one

  853. who boasts boast in the Lord. Let's

  854. pray.

  855. Lord, we thank you for the wisdom that

  856. you give us in our lives. And I pray,

  857. Lord, that we will not seek to embrace

  858. wholeheartedly just the wisdom of this

  859. world, but we'll seek to embrace your

  860. wisdom, how you lead and guide us, and

  861. how you call us home. And your wisdom is

  862. simply this.

  863. Fear you. Live our lives in reverence

  864. and in awe of you.

  865. and turn away from evil. Help us by your

  866. spirit live that life. Help us by your

  867. spirit pursue Christ who is the

  868. personification of the wisdom of God. In

  869. Jesus precious name I pray these things.

  870. Amen.

  871. We're going to stand and sing as we

  872. prepare our hearts for the Lord's

  873. supper. When I survey the wondrous

  874. cross. Let's stand. prepare our hearts

  875. for the Lord's supper.
