  1. that in. So what? Yeah. All right. Thank

  2. you. So um yeah, it's just it's just a

  3. privilege uh to be here. Our passage is

  4. Mark chapter 5. Mark chapter 5

Mark 5 chapter mention Mark 5:1–20

  5. verses 1- 20. This is the story of the

  6. Garazine

  7. demoniac. Mark chapter 5:es 1-20.

  8. Um, I I will actually read the passage

  9. as I go. I'm not going to read the whole

  10. thing now, but as as I tell the story,

  11. I'll read each section as we go. So,

  12. we'll get to that in due course. I

  13. should also tell you, I don't know what

  14. version used, but I'm I'm reading from

  15. the Christian Standard Bible. So, it

  16. might be a little bit different from

  17. your Bible, but very very close, right?

  18. All right. Well, let's pray again before

  19. we begin.

  20. Father, we do thank you that you do have

  21. the words of life and and Lord, we thank

  22. you that those words are wonderful and

  23. and and Lord, we just uh repeat the

  24. words of that song. We that you give us

  25. ears to hear and eyes to see. We know we

  26. know we're prone to be distracted. We we

  27. we often

  28. when we're reading your word or hearing

  29. your word, we're our minds wander. So,

  30. help us. Help us by your spirit to

  31. attend to uh these words and uh they're

  32. your words, Lord. So we thank you for

  33. that. Speak speak to our hearts we pray

  34. by your Holy Spirit. Amen.

  35. Well, one of the last recorded songs by

  36. the great country singer Johnny Cash was

  37. the song Hurt. He didn't write that

  38. song, right? But he recorded it. He's he

  39. sings that song before he died. He sang

  40. it with deep uh feeling because uh Cash

  41. himself, I don't know if you all know

  42. Johnny Cash, but he was he was wildly

  43. famous, but he but he battled inner

  44. demons. I'm not speaking of literal

  45. demons there, but he battled inner

  46. demons in his life. He he faced

  47. addictions to drugs. He he fell prey to

  48. sexual sin. I I actually read two

  49. different biographies of Johnny Cash. He

  50. he was a believer, but he struggled a

  51. lot. Well, the first verse of that song,

  52. Hurt, unveils the pain. Here's what he

  53. said. I I hurt myself today to see if I

  54. still feel. I focus on the pain, the

  55. only thing that's real. The needle tears

  56. a hole. The old familiar sting. try to

  57. kill it all away, but I remember

  58. everything. What have I become, my

  59. sweetest friend? Everyone I know goes

  60. away in the end. When I hear this song,

  61. at least in the United States, I don't

  62. know your culture as well, but I think

  63. of I think of our generation. Our

  64. generation in the US, I think it's true

  65. here, too.

  66. It's it's confused.

  67. It's it's anxious. It's angry.

  68. It's distressed.

  69. It's worried. It's it's harried. It's a

  70. it's a wandering generation.

  71. And this is reflected in an American

  72. author uh Jonathan Heaid has written a

  73. book called uh the anxious generation.

  74. That's how he characterizes this

  75. generation. You know, some in the United

  76. States, they're triggered, that's the

  77. word we use over there. I don't know if

  78. you know that word, but they're

  79. triggered by the slightest criticism.

  80. And many in the US, not all, but many in

  81. the US live uh with unhappiness even

  82. though they live in the richest

  83. and most comfortable society really in

  84. the history of the world. They they they

  85. enjoyed luxuries. I think you do too

  86. probably. They enjoyed luxuries even

  87. even the even kings in history did not

  88. enjoy. Still many are miserable. They

  89. they have a a a yawning sense of misery

  90. within and a sense of blame and

  91. accusation to the world without in in

  92. one sense they have everything but but

  93. their lives are meaningless.

  94. Love is love is absent. So that you know

  95. that brings us to our text today because

  96. we see in our story Mark 5:es 1-20 how

  97. Jesus makes a man new. You in the in the

  98. previous story one uh commentator

  99. pointed out in the previous story Jesus

  100. Jesus calms a storm on the sea. He calms

  101. the sea and in this story he calms he

  102. calms a storm in a man's soul.

  103. So we we learn what do we learn from

  104. this story before we begin? We we learn

  105. from this story there's hope there's

  106. hope for every person

  107. and and we learn from the story that

  108. Jesus Jesus is the answer. He's the

  109. answer for for this generation. He's the

  110. answer for every generation. He he's the

  111. hope for you.

  112. He's he's the hope for me. So I I want

  113. to think of four dimensions of the story

  114. as we march through it. So So here's

  115. what they are. First, we see we see the

  116. condition

  117. we see the condition of the demonized

  118. man. Second,

  119. the man and the demons, they encounter

  120. Jesus.

  121. Third, the town's people respond to

  122. Jesus. And fourth we see the new life of

  123. the man freed from Satan's power. So

  124. first

  125. Jesus describes the the state the

  126. condition I mean Mark describes the

  127. state and condition of the demoniac. So

  128. let's read the first five verses.

  129. They that is Jesus and his disciples

  130. came to the other side of the sea to the

  131. region of the Garazines. As soon as he

  132. got out of the boat, a man with an

  133. unclean spirit came out of the tombs and

  134. met him. He lived in the tombs and no

  135. one was able to restrain him anymore,

  136. not even with a chain because he often

  137. had been bound with shackles and chains,

  138. but had torn the chains apart and

  139. smashed the shackles. No one was strong

  140. enough to subdue him night and day among

  141. the tombs and on the mountains. He was

  142. always crying out and cutting himself

  143. with stones.

  144. Uh, one commentator says about the

  145. story, it is one of the most lamentable

  146. stories of human wretchedness in the

  147. Bible. So, this this man was defiled by

  148. by a demon, which which Mark describes

  149. as an unclean spirit. He he wasn't in

  150. his right mind, was he? He he was under

  151. the control of an alien spiritual power.

  152. So as a result

  153. he couldn't live he couldn't live in

  154. human society. He spent his nights and

  155. his days in in cemeteries, tombs, right,

  156. in in the mountains. He didn't he didn't

  157. live a normal life in human society. He

  158. was an outcast. He he he lived a life

  159. that was that was utterly alone and and

  160. and desolate.

  161. So in applying the story, I'm I'm not

  162. saying right hear this. I'm not saying

  163. this generation is demonpossessed.

  164. That's not the application I'm drawing.

  165. I'm not I'm not I'm not suggesting

  166. everyone who suffers

  167. from malades is inhabited by demons.

  168. Although of course demons are real,

  169. right? There is demonic possession. But

  170. I'm not saying that's true of everybody,

  171. right? At the same time, the devastation

  172. happening in our world is the result of

  173. demonic influence. The state of our

  174. world today owes much to Satan's satanic

  175. deceptive power. Human sin is powerful.

  176. If you read Ephesians 2 1-3, I won't

  177. read that right now, but we're told

  178. people are dead in their trespasses and

  179. sins. And they're we're talking about

  180. unbelievers, right? Unbelievers are dead

  181. in their trespasses and sins. If you're

  182. a belie unbeliever today, that's what

  183. the Bible says about you, right? You're

  184. dead in your trespasses and sins. And

  185. and you're under the influence of of the

  186. world, the flesh, and the devil. So

  187. the world, right, there's a sociological

  188. peer pressure dimension to sin. You're

  189. under the influence of the flesh, your

  190. own desires. There's a psychological

  191. aspect of sin. And then under the

  192. influence of the devil, there's a

  193. spiritual aspect of sin. And they all

  194. work together, right? So in this story,

  195. we're focusing on Satan, aren't we?

  196. There's a spiritual aspect. There's a

  197. satanic aspect to sin. And and of course

  198. we see that in the life of this karazine

  199. demoniac. You by way of analogy, right?

  200. Many in our society today, they don't

  201. feel they fit in with the social network

  202. that we have. They're they're alive, but

  203. they're they're downcast and they're

  204. depressed. I I was talking recently to a

  205. college professor in Kentucky. That's

  206. where I'm from in the United States. And

  207. she told me, I don't know if this is

  208. happening over here, some students tell

  209. her, "I can't go to class. I because

  210. going to class, just going to class

  211. fills them with anxiety and with fear.

  212. Those social situations like that they

  213. paralyze them with a sense of dread and

  214. and forboding.

  215. In other words, public any public

  216. encounters, right, coming to a church

  217. like this, that would be that would be

  218. terrifying to them. They they don't go

  219. out into the world, right? They they'd

  220. live their lives alone. And yet even in

  221. their aloneeness, they're they're

  222. miserable.

  223. Well, we continue in the story. Notice

  224. that the demoniac had superhuman

  225. strength. Verse three says, "No one no

  226. one could restrain him."

  227. Mark adds, "Not not even with chains,

  228. not even with feather feathers, right?

  229. He was restrained with shackles and

  230. chains. He tore them apart. He He

  231. smashed them to pieces." When when I

  232. read that I think God God made human

  233. beings he made he made you he made me to

  234. image to God to reflect who God is and

  235. all those love and justice and

  236. beautiness as as Francis Schaefer says

  237. human beings were the crown of creation

  238. and therefore human beings every human

  239. being right every human being is

  240. magnificent right every human being from

  241. a baby to the oldest person even to

  242. someone who's you know experiences u

  243. mental or physical challenges every

  244. human being matters to God every human

  245. being is significant but

  246. we can't fulfill our purpose

  247. we can't fulfill our purpose as human

  248. beings apart from the Lord we're only

  249. strong

  250. in the strength of the Lord when we find

  251. our strength

  252. by depending on him so that we give

  253. thanks to him for for every good work as

  254. as he works in us what is what is

  255. pleasing in his sight. You know David

  256. David reflects on this in Psalm 18:es 1

  257. and two. I love you Lord. Why do you

  258. think David loves the Lord? I love you

  259. Lord. What does he say? My strength. The

  260. Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my

  261. deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek

  262. refuge, my shield, and the horn of my

  263. salvation, my stronghold.

  264. So, the Lord's our strength. But in this

  265. story, we find a man who is strong,

  266. but under an alien power, right? Under a

  267. demonic power. and and therefore his

  268. strength isn't for God's glory or for

  269. his good, right? It was it was

  270. fundamentally

  271. destructive and and that's our story

  272. too, right? Apart from Jesus Christ,

  273. apart from Jesus Christ, the strength we

  274. have actually ends up destroying us. You

  275. know, many in our culture today, at

  276. least in the United States,

  277. they read a story like this and they

  278. say, "But I don't believe in demons. I

  279. don't believe in that. I I don't even

  280. believe in God." But then I say again,

  281. look, look at so many in our society

  282. today. Again, I'm not necessarily saying

  283. they're demonpossessed, right? But

  284. surely Satan is alive and well on the

  285. planet Earth.

  286. He's convinced many people there's no

  287. final judgment. Right? That that's the

  288. work of Satan that after you die nothing

  289. happens. But also we see we see and

  290. maybe it's you today. We're all like

  291. this apart from Christ. We see many who

  292. are many who are broken.

  293. Many who are in despair.

  294. Many many whose lives are ruined and

  295. wrecked by by alcohol,

  296. by drugs, by by deep and profound

  297. addictions, to pornography,

  298. to relationships that are fractured.

  299. And some of those some of those who say,

  300. "Well, I don't believe in God." They're

  301. turning to astrology,

  302. to to horoscopes,

  303. and to pagan and demonic sources. I this

  304. is a long time ago, but I remember when

  305. President Reagan was president, his wife

  306. Nancy, they got in a difficult situation

  307. and she turned to an astrologer. She got

  308. nervous, right? And she wanted to find

  309. some comfort. When when people turn away

  310. from God, they they often unwittingly

  311. they turn towards the demonic. And but

  312. what they don't realize is they're

  313. actually turning to

  314. forces

  315. agents that will ultimately destroy them

  316. and devastate them. So you know in our

  317. desperation we reach out for some

  318. spiritual reality we we pursue happiness

  319. but any joy and happiness from those

  320. things it's short it's short-lived it

  321. doesn't last in the end

  322. in the end we can feel wretched can't we

  323. as people violate their consciences they

  324. deface

  325. they disfigure they they end up

  326. deforming their own humanity And and we

  327. see this in the life of the Gazine

  328. demoniac, don't we? He was he was he was

  329. despondent. He was he was he was

  330. dejected. He was downcasted. He what did

  331. he spend his days doing? He was crying

  332. out in misery. He didn't know he didn't

  333. know whether to live or to die. As he

  334. cut himself with stones, he was he was

  335. he was living a kind of living death,

  336. wasn't he? He wanted to live and he

  337. wanted to die. And again, I'd say that's

  338. the experience of many in our world

  339. today. That's that's the story. That's

  340. our story apart from Christ. People can

  341. smile on the inside, right? But inside

  342. but on the but on the on the outside, I

  343. mean, but on the inside they may feel

  344. miserable. Not everyone's tempted to

  345. commit suicide, right? But I had a very

  346. dear beloved friend. He told me he was

  347. in Sweden. He spent the whole day with

  348. his friend. a whole day having fun doing

  349. things. The next day his friend got up

  350. and killed himself. Not a clue. The day

  351. before he had no clue this person was

  352. unhappy. People can give you one

  353. impression on the outside, right? But on

  354. the inside, profound things are are

  355. happening often in people's lives often

  356. that they hide from us. So that's the

  357. state. That's the story of the demoniac.

  358. And then Jesus comes to see him. And

  359. that brings us to the second dimension

  360. of the text. The demons and the man

  361. encountered Jesus. So we pick it up in

  362. verse six. And I'll read through verse

  363. 13. When he saw Jesus from a distance,

  364. he ran and knelt down before him. And he

  365. cried out with a loud voice, "What do

  366. you have to do with me, Jesus, son of

  367. the most high God? I beg you before God,

  368. don't torment me." For Jesus had told

  369. him, "Come out of the man, you unclean

  370. spirit. What is your name?" Jesus asked

  371. him. My name is Legion, he answered him,

  372. because we are many. And he begged him

  373. earnestly not to send them out of the

  374. region. A large herd of pigs was there

  375. feeding on the hillside. The demons

  376. begged him, "Send us to the pigs so that

  377. we enter them." So he gave them

  378. permission, and the unclean spirits came

  379. out and entered the pigs. The herd of

  380. about 2,000 rushed down the steep bank

  381. into the sea and drowned there. Well,

  382. the demoniac, he recognizes immediately

  383. he's no match for Jesus. He runs to meet

  384. Jesus. He falls down before him. He

  385. asked Jesus as the son of God, don't

  386. torment me. So, isn't it interesting?

  387. What an interesting thing. He's never

  388. met Jesus before, but instantly he knows

  389. Jesus is the son of God. But he but it's

  390. the demons who know this, right? The

  391. demons know who Jesus is. In Mark's

  392. gospel, they more know more about Jesus

  393. is than Jesus's enemies.

  394. They know more about who Jesus is than

  395. Jesus's family. Jesus' family has

  396. doubts. They know more about who Jesus

  397. is even than Jesus' disciples.

  398. They recognize and acknowledge Jesus as

  399. the son of God. So, what does that tell

  400. us? merely recognizing and believing in

  401. your head

  402. Jesus is God's son, that doesn't save

  403. anyone, right? Too many Christians,

  404. sometimes even missionaries, think if

  405. they can get just get someone to say

  406. Jesus is the son of God who died for

  407. their sins, they'll be saved.

  408. Even more scary, we can run across

  409. people who made a confession of faith, a

  410. profession, right, when they were 5, 10,

  411. 15, 20, 25, who think they're saved just

  412. because they said the right words, but

  413. they haven't been to church and they've

  414. not been following the Lord for years.

  415. As as James says in his epistle, the

  416. demons confess

  417. that there's one God and they shudder.

  418. Intellectual belief alone that does not

  419. save anyone. True salvation doesn't come

  420. if we agree in our minds with right

  421. doctrine. Of course, that's important,

  422. isn't it? You have to believe Jesus is

  423. the son of God to be saved. But it's

  424. more than that. We must also put our

  425. trust in Jesus

  426. to be saved. We are to give ourselves to

  427. him. And Paul says in 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 1:9

  428. 1:9, "We're converted when we turn from

  429. our idols to serve the living God." When

  430. we put our trust in the atoning death of

  431. Jesus to save us from the wrath to come.

  432. So if you're not a Christian today,

  433. right, that's the word to you to turn

  434. away from your sin, to turn away from

  435. what you've given yourself to and to

  436. turn to God, to turn to Jesus, to

  437. forgive you of your sins if you trust in

  438. him and to have eternal life. Well, back

  439. back to the demoniac. He's tormented

  440. because Jesus had commanded the unclean

  441. spirit to depart. But but is but what's

  442. going on with him is more complicated

  443. than we might think because Jesus asks

  444. the unclean spirit what's your name?

  445. We're expecting well there's one unclean

  446. spirit in him. What's your name? That's

  447. individual, right? But the demon answers

  448. legion. A a legion. You know Jesus asked

  449. what's your name? But do you notice

  450. something in the story? The demon

  451. doesn't say the name because legion

  452. isn't a name. Legion's what? a number le

  453. a legion was in in the ancient world was

  454. 6,000 Roman soldiers. So nothing is said

  455. about a name. Well what we're told the

  456. story surprises us, right? It's not a

  457. name, it's a number, right? What why why

  458. are we told that in the story? To show

  459. that the problem Jesus faced was a

  460. massive problem.

  461. Here here was a man in which there

  462. seemed to be no hope of rescue. This

  463. guy's this guy's beyond help, right?

  464. Everyone in society, right? Everyone's

  465. given up on this guy, right? Uh you

  466. know, we we might think today of people

  467. who come, which is more and more common,

  468. from deeply dysfunctional homes. Uh we

  469. might think of those who prowl the

  470. streets in gangs.

  471. uh or of those who are so

  472. psychologically weak that they don't

  473. ever want to leave home or or maybe

  474. maybe we just think of friends and

  475. family who are hardened to the things of

  476. God. So it seems like they'll never come

  477. to faith that there's nothing that will

  478. ever bring them to God.

  479. But we're reminded from the story,

  480. right? Jesus, Jesus is Lord. And when

  481. when he speaks, his words create a new

  482. reality.

  483. Did you notice Jesus doesn't need a long

  484. exorcism formula, which was common in

  485. the ancient world? He doesn't need a

  486. long incantation.

  487. When he commands legions to depart, they

  488. depart. When Jesus speaks to someone's

  489. heart,

  490. they're set free. they they become new.

  491. What do we learn from this? Never as

  492. long as life lasts, never give up on

  493. anyone

  494. that because Jesus Jesus can save. What

  495. does the story tell us? Jesus can save

  496. the hardest cases. Do you do you have

  497. friends and family that are hard? Don't

  498. give up. You know, you don't have a

  499. absolute promise, but never give up.

  500. Even those whom it seems impossible to

  501. save, this guy's impossible to save.

  502. Right? That's the point of the story.

  503. But the word of Jesus declares and

  504. creates a new reality. I I thought of

  505. the story in Luke

  506. 7 when Jesus says to the sinful woman

  507. who everybody knows, they know she's

  508. sinful. When Jesus says,

  509. "Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace."

  510. His word, his word made her new. That

  511. sinful woman, she was no longer defined

  512. by her sin. And neither are you. If

  513. you're a Christian, you you're no longer

  514. defined by your past sin. She was in a

  515. new and right relationship with God. She

  516. was, we read it today, right? She was

  517. Romans 5:1. She was at peace with God

    Romans 5:1

  518. through our Lord Jesus Christ. Isn't

  519. Isn't that your story, too? I never

  520. ceased to be amazed and thrilled by the

  521. words,

  522. "Your sins are forgiven.

  523. Go in peace." Well, back to the story.

  524. The encounter with Jesus freed the

  525. demoniac, but but the encounter

  526. terrified the demons, right? They begged

  527. Jesus,

  528. "Don't don't don't don't throw us down

  529. into the abyss, down into the

  530. underworld, right? But they ask if they

  531. can go into the pigs grazing on the

  532. hillside. You know, it's difficult to

  533. know what role the pigs play in the

  534. story. The really the first person I

  535. became a Christian when I was 17 through

  536. the person who ended up becoming my

  537. wife, but the first person I ever

  538. witnessed to was he was in my high

  539. school and uh you know he was reading

  540. the Bible. I never read the Bible before

  541. I was saved. So there's I didn't know

  542. much, right? And he asked me when I'm

  543. sharing the gospel with him, he asked me

  544. about these pigs.

  545. Like what? It bothered him that Jesus

  546. let the demons go into the pigs. Well, I

  547. mean, I had no idea, right? I mean, I

  548. was a new Christian and honestly, I

  549. didn't care much about the pigs, you

  550. know? He But he did. He cared about the

  551. pigs. You never know what's going to

  552. bother people. Well, you know what's our

  553. best guess? Well, pigs, right? In Jewish

  554. culture, they're unclean animals, right?

  555. You can read about that in Leviticus 11

  556. and Deuteronomy 14. Maybe maybe that's

  557. why maybe that's why Jesus allows the

  558. demons to go into the pigs. In any case,

  559. whatever whatever the answer is, the

  560. demons Jesus allows the demons to go

  561. into the pigs and and the and the and

  562. the pigs, you know, they they hurdle

  563. down the cliff, right? and they into the

  564. Sea of Galilee and they drown. I think

  565. the point of the story is

  566. demons devastate wherever they go.

  567. Whether it's a person or animals, they

  568. they they bring trouble, right? You you

  569. know, Mark also tells us there are 2,000

  570. pigs. That number is striking. That's

  571. that's a huge number of pigs. Why? Why

  572. does he tell us that? Right? They tell

  573. stories a certain way because the number

  574. 2000 confirms what? There's not just one

  575. demon in this person. There's a legion

  576. of demons. And that therefore so many

  577. pigs are affected. Only only a legion of

  578. demons could inhabit so many pigs.

  579. Jesus didn't just cast out one demon but

  580. many. So the encounter with Jesus freed

  581. the demoniac, right? and uh it routed

  582. the demons. So what what's the lesson

  583. for us as a Christians? As Christians,

  584. we have no reason we have no reason to

  585. fear demons. 1 John 5, greater greater

  586. is he who is in you than the one who is

  587. in the world. or Luke 10:1 19, Jesus

    Luke 10:1

  588. says to his disciples, and it's his word

  589. for us, I have given you the authority

  590. to trample on snakes and scorpions and

  591. over all the power of the enemy. Nothing

  592. at all will harm you. Let's remember,

  593. when we're believers, we are more than

  594. conquerors through him who loved us. He

  595. will give us strength by his power to

  596. make it to the end. Now, that brings us

  597. to the third dimension of the story, and

  598. that's the reaction of the town's

  599. people. So, we're going to read verses

  600. 14-1 17.

  601. The man who tended the pigs, ran off,

  602. reported into the town in the

  603. countryside, and the people went to see

  604. what had happened. They came to Jesus

  605. and saw the man who had been

  606. demonpossessed sitting there dressed and

  607. in his right mind, and they were afraid.

  608. Those who had seen it described to them

  609. what had happened to the demon-possessed

  610. man and told about the pigs. Then they

  611. began to beg him to leave their region.

  612. So the Gazine demoniac, he's free. He's

  613. liberated from his bondage. They see it,

  614. they report it. We might expect the

  615. people in the town to say, "Praise the

  616. Lord." Right? The demonized man is free.

  617. He's a new person. How exciting. But

  618. instead of rejoicing, they're afraid.

  619. And they say to Jesus, "Please leave.

  620. Please leave. Don't stay."

  621. Why? Why are they struck with fear? And

  622. why do they ask Jesus to leave? probably

  623. because they were more interested in

  624. making money and prospering than

  625. anything else. The loss of the pigs,

  626. that's a financial disaster, right? They

  627. didn't care if a person was transformed

  628. and changed if it meant financial loss.

  629. They they were comfortable in the life

  630. they were living. They didn't want

  631. anything to change it. right before

  632. their eyes. They saw a man impossible to

  633. change. They saw him transform that

  634. someone who was a hopeless case, someone

  635. that no one else could help, right? They

  636. saw

  637. they saw a man made new and they they

  638. just wanted Jesus to go away. Is isn't

  639. that often the same today? Pe people

  640. resist Jesus because Jesus upends our

  641. lives, doesn't he? He turns them in new

  642. directions. We we may be so busy raising

  643. a family, making money, being

  644. entertained. We don't want Jesus

  645. interfering in our lives. We would

  646. rather sometimes, right? Especially

  647. unbelievers, just just go away. Just go

  648. away.

  649. We're fine. Thank you. Just go away.

  650. Don't bother me. I've got my plans.

  651. Right. the the the town's people were

  652. saying, you know, life was better before

  653. Jesus came along and and sadly many

  654. people in society think they're spending

  655. their lives well when they're forgetting

  656. what's most important in life and that's

  657. that's God himself. Well, that brings us

  658. to the last dimension of the story.

  659. That's the new life of the man freed

  660. from demonic power. I want to read verse

  661. 15 again.

  662. They the town's people

  663. came to Jesus and they saw the man

  664. who had been demonpossessed sitting

  665. there dressed and in his right mind and

  666. they were afraid.

  667. What does it look like

  668. when a person is freed by Jesus? Well,

  669. first of all, this is my favorite part

  670. of the story. Jesus puts him in his

  671. right mind. The man, he's now whole.

  672. He's sane. He's sensible. He's rational.

  673. In one sense, it's nothing dramatic,

  674. right? But how wonderful it is to be

  675. what we are created to be. I mean,

  676. what's he doing? He's not doing

  677. anything, right? He's he is but he but

  678. he's he's just sitting there. But he

  679. isn't running here and there anymore

  680. like a mentally unstable person. He

  681. isn't outside living in the cemetery

  682. anymore. He's sitting. What's he doing?

  683. He's just sitting quietly at Jesus'

  684. feet. But guess what else? Is this so

  685. dramatic? But he has his clothes on.

  686. He's just living a normal life now,

  687. right? He's living the life he was

  688. intended to live. He was restored to be

  689. what God made him to be. That's what

  690. Jesus does when he gives us new life. He

  691. makes us He makes us what we were always

  692. intended to be. We become

  693. truly and and fully human when we sit at

  694. Jesus' feet, don't we? As we're restored

  695. to the image of the one who created us.

  696. I think of what Gla1 Pascal, the famous

  697. scientist, right, and believer. He said

  698. this. I love this quote. Perhaps you've

  699. heard it before. All of man's problems

  700. stem from his inability to sit quietly

  701. in his room alone. Isn't that an

  702. interesting statement?

  703. Yes. This this man was alone before. But

  704. that was a different kind of aloneeness,

  705. wasn't it? He was frenetic and he was

  706. frantic. But now

  707. he's at peace with God and he's at peace

  708. with himself. He doesn't need

  709. constant entertainment. He doesn't need

  710. constant noise to be happy. He can sit

  711. quietly,

  712. contentedly,

  713. and restfully

  714. in Jesus' presence. He isn't tormented

  715. by his guilt and his sin.

  716. So, if you're a believer today, you're

  717. not that different from the demonized

  718. man, right? You you two were alienated

  719. from God.

  720. You were, whether you knew it or not,

  721. you were ruining your life before you

  722. met Jesus. Maybe maybe you weren't

  723. cutting yourself, maybe you weren't

  724. living outside society, but sin, if you

  725. weren't doing those things, it was

  726. slowly devastating you and destroying

  727. you. You know, it's like the frog being

  728. slowly boiled right to death.

  729. So, you know, sin, I'm not speaking

  730. clinically here because sin at the end

  731. of the day, it's insane, isn't it? Sin

  732. doesn't make any sense because it's it's

  733. it's destructive. But praise God. Praise

  734. God. He's made us new. As Augustine

  735. said,

  736. you have made us for yourself, and our

  737. hearts are restless until they rest in

  738. thee. Well, the story concludes in

  739. verses 18- 20, and we'll read those. As

  740. Jesus was getting into the boat, the man

  741. who had been demonpossessed begged him

  742. earnestly that he might remain with him.

  743. Jesus did not let him, but told him, "Go

  744. home to your own people and report to

  745. them how much the Lord has done for you,

  746. and how he has had mercy on you." So, he

  747. went out and began to proclaim in the

  748. decaps,

  749. that's 10 cities, how much Jesus had

  750. done for him, for him. And they were all

  751. amazed.

  752. So this man wanted to follow Jesus and

  753. to be his disciple. Jesus tells them,

  754. "No, go home. Go home and spread the

  755. news about what the Lord has done for

  756. you." So I I want you to see a couple

  757. things about the end here. Notice notice

  758. first that Jesus said, "Tell him how

  759. much the Lord has done for you."

  760. But the man goes and tells what Jesus

  761. has done for him. Did you notice that

  762. Jesus is Lord? Jesus is equal with God.

  763. The Lord here is Jesus. So that's a

  764. subtle shift in the story, but that's

  765. interesting to notice, isn't here's the

  766. second thing. God calls us to do

  767. different things, doesn't he? It's not

  768. all the same. You might think he'd say,

  769. "I want to go be a missionary for

  770. Jesus." And Jesus says, "No, you stay

  771. home." God calls us in various places.

  772. Some he says, "Stay home. You stay home.

  773. You do your work right there." Others he

  774. calls to different places.

  775. It's up to what the Lord tells each

  776. person, right? There's not just one

  777. pattern. There's not just one way of

  778. living a godly life, right? There's lots

  779. of different paths. And your path is

  780. your path. God will make that clear to

  781. you. And in this case, he said, "You're

  782. going to be effective in your home. You

  783. stay." And then what's the other thing

  784. that's remarkable about this? He said,

  785. "Go home." This good word for all of us,

  786. right? Where you live, where you work,

  787. tell other people about Jesus. Right? So

  788. that takes some boldness and courage,

  789. right? Go home where you are, wherever

  790. you are, tell other people about what

  791. the Lord has done for you. That's what

  792. he calls upon him to do. And that's what

  793. he calls upon all of us to do in our

  794. place where we live.

  795. We're called upon to tell other people

  796. about

  797. about Jesus. And we we can tell them,

  798. can't we?

  799. Jesus, what did this man say? Jesus

  800. changed me. Jesus turned my life around.

  801. Jesus turned my life upside down.

  802. And then we can say, and he can do that

  803. for you, too. Jesus' love can turn your

  804. life around. So give praise to his

  805. wonderful name. Let's pray. Father, we

  806. do thank you for this amazing story of

  807. the power of Jesus Christ. How we praise

  808. you for his goodness. Lord, we pray for

  809. for those of us who don't know Jesus

  810. that we would encounter him like this

  811. man. And for those of us who do know

  812. him, Lord, we pray that wherever we are,

  813. we would fulfill what you want us to do.

  814. That we would be your disciples. And

  815. that we would tell other people how

  816. wonderful Jesus is. We pray this in his

  817. name. Amen.
