  1. Amen. Well, good morning. Please take

  2. your Bibles and open them up to the book

  3. of Job. That is the last time I'm going

  4. to say that. Job chapter 42. Please open

    Job 42 chapter mention

  5. up your Bibles to Job chapter 42.

    Job 42 chapter mention

  6. This moment as you get to the end of the

  7. book is always a bittersweet moment. Um,

  8. it's bitter because I realize and

  9. understand I will probably never teach

  10. through the book of Job again in my

  11. lifetime in the way that I have.

  12. Probably not.

  13. It is sweet because the Lord has been

  14. faithful

  15. through verses and chapters. week after

  16. week we have met with God and he has

  17. spoken to us. And what a privilege it

  18. has been for me uh to be in the study

  19. and prayer and study through this word

  20. and I hope it's been a privilege for you

  21. uh to be here and hear God's word as

  22. well. So let's pray as we look at this

  23. book for the final time.

  24. Lord, we thank you for this great book

  25. that we have.

  26. The book of Job, Lord, that teaches us

  27. who you are, Lord, that shows us your

  28. majesty.

  29. Lo, Lord, that shows us our frailty.

  30. Lord, I pray that you'd use it to

  31. encourage our hearts and all of our

  32. hearts. Lord, I thank you for all of the

  33. adults in the room. And Lord, thank you

  34. for bringing them here and sustaining

  35. them here and know it is not an accident

  36. each one that we have here. Lord, I pray

  37. that you'd speak deeply to their hearts

  38. even now. Lord, I pray for the children

  39. in this room. Thank you for them. Thank

  40. you that we are family and we're all

  41. here in the same room listening. Thank

  42. you for the ups and the downs uh that

  43. the kids might have in and through uh

  44. the sermon. We know that that speaks

  45. life. We thank you for giving them life.

  46. And Lord, I just pray that even one word

  47. from your word might impress into their

  48. small souls that they need Jesus.

  49. Move in their hearts this morning. We

  50. pray. You are a big God. You are a

  51. glorious savior. And you can do far

  52. beyond what we can ever think or

  53. imagine. So I pray that you'd do that

  54. this morning in and through even uh my

  55. weakness and our weakness as listeners.

  56. Help us, Lord. We pray this in your

  57. precious name, Jesus. Amen.

  58. As we think about Job chapter 42,

    Job 42 chapter mention

  59. there's a word that I want us to think

  60. about, and it's a word I think that

  61. every Christian should know. In fact,

  62. without this word, you cannot be a

  63. Christian.

  64. You cannot f fully follow Christ without

  65. this word. And it is repentance.

  66. If you have not repented of your sin,

  67. you are not a Christian.

  68. Coming to church does not make you a

  69. Christian.

  70. Singing songs does not make you a

  71. Christian.

  72. coming to church because your parents

  73. tell you coming to church does not make

  74. you a Christian. If your parents are

  75. Christians, that does not make you a

  76. Christian. What makes you a Christian is

  77. if you yourself have repented of your

  78. sin and have trusted in the Lord Jesus

  79. Christ. Have you done that? I'm not

  80. talking about the people beside you. I'm

  81. talking about you. Have you truly

  82. repented of your sin? Have you truly

  83. trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ?

  84. Because without repentance, you're not a

  85. Christian.

  86. You need repentance.

  87. Your sin has separated you far away from

  88. God. And in order to trust in him and to

  89. live your life for him, you need to turn

  90. from your sin and turn to the Savior.

  91. And I would call on you this morning,

  92. even right now, to do that. Repent of

  93. your sin and trust in him.

  94. This last chapter, it shows us two types

  95. of repentance.

  96. Job's repentance and Job's friends

  97. repentance.

  98. And Job's repentance, I would say, is a

  99. different type of repentance than the

  100. repentance of the friends.

  101. Listen to Job's repentance.

  102. Job 42:1.

    Job 42:1

  103. Then Job answered the Lord and said, "I

  104. know that you can do all things and that

  105. no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Who

  106. is this that hides counsel without

  107. knowledge?

  108. Therefore, I have uttered what I did not

  109. understand, things too wonderful for me

  110. which I did not know.

  111. Hear and I will speak. I will question

  112. you and you make it known to me.

  113. I had heard of you by the hearing of the

  114. ear, but now my eye sees you. Therefore,

  115. I despise myself

  116. and repent in dust and ashes.

  117. This is Job's type of repentance.

  118. In this repentance, Job finally

  119. understands who God is and who he is.

  120. Job finally truly knows who God is and

  121. who he is. Because when Job has come

  122. through great suffering, Job has

  123. realized and that he's misunderstood

  124. God. Because sometimes in our suffering,

  125. what happens is uh our minds kind of get

  126. foggy towards what God is doing in our

  127. lives. And Job's mind, it's got foggy as

  128. to what God is doing in his life. And

  129. he's been asking many questions and

  130. wondering why God, why God? Why God?

  131. Have I gone through all this suffering?

  132. And finally, Job comes to the place

  133. where he knows something about God and

  134. he knows something about himself. What

  135. does he know about God? Verse two, he

  136. says this, "I know that you can do all

  137. things and that no purpose of yours

  138. can be thwarted."

  139. Job has come to the place where he can

  140. finally say to God, God, I know that you

  141. can do all things. Now, how did God get

  142. him to that place? Where Job finally

  143. said, now I get it. I've been asking the

  144. question why in this world, but what I

  145. need to focus in in is who is you. Not

  146. my why questions, but what you are

  147. doing, God. I need to keep my focus and

  148. my mind set upon you. And how has he

  149. come to this place? How has Job come to

  150. this place? Well, the Lord asked of Job

  151. over 70 rhetorical questions in the last

  152. number of chapters. I didn't read to you

  153. all 70 of them, but there were 70 of

  154. them. Now, what God could have done is

  155. God could have just blasted Job. Job, do

  156. you not know of I am? I did all this and

  157. I did all this and I made all this. But

  158. Jo the Lord doesn't blast him. And what

  159. the Lord does is he asks him loads and

  160. loads of questions.

  161. Some of the questions were this. Where

  162. were you?

  163. Job 38:4.

    Job 38:4

  164. Where were you when I laid the

  165. foundation of the world? The Lord asked

  166. him. The Lord asked him the have you

  167. questions. Have you entered the

  168. storehouses of snow? Or have you seen

  169. the storehouses of hail? The Lord asked

  170. him the can you question. Can you lift

  171. up your voice to the clouds that the

  172. flood of waters may cover you? And he

  173. asks him the do you questions. Do you

  174. know when the mountain goat gives birth?

  175. It is amazing to think that the Lord

  176. knows the timing of every single birth

  177. on this planet. Every single birth.

  178. Millions and millions and millions born

  179. day after day.

  180. millions of human beings, millions of

  181. animals. He knows every single one and

  182. the moment of their birth. And he asked

  183. Job, Job, do you know that? And Job

  184. says, I don't know.

  185. And finally, Job comes to the place

  186. after all of these questions

  187. and he says this. Oh Lord,

  188. I know that you can do all things. I

  189. know that you understand all things.

  190. And now Lord, even in my suffering,

  191. though the Lord hasn't answered his

  192. question of why my suffering,

  193. Lord, I know you have a purpose and that

  194. Lord is good enough for me.

  195. Sometimes we have to acknowledge, do we

  196. trust God in our suffering?

  197. Do we trust God even when we don't have

  198. the answers?

  199. He knows something about God and then he

  200. knows something about himself. The end

  201. of verse three, he says, "Therefore, I

  202. have uttered what I did not understand,

  203. things too wonderful for me which I did

  204. not know."

  205. The Lord asks him all these questions

  206. for which Job has no answer. I don't

  207. know. I don't know. I don't know. I

  208. don't know.

  209. And finally, Job comes to the humble

  210. place where he says, "Okay, Lord. I

  211. don't understand everything. I don't

  212. understand all your purposes. I don't

  213. understand all your plans. But I, Lord,

  214. I'm going to trust you."

  215. Christian, you will be in that place

  216. sometimes

  217. where you say, "Lord, I don't have a

  218. clue of what you're doing. I want to ask

  219. why. I don't understand, but Lord, I

  220. know you do. I know you have a purpose.

  221. So Lord, I'm going to trust in you.

  222. I'm going to simply live my life turning

  223. my eyes upon you, trusting and obeying

  224. you because you are the king of my life.

  225. And Job has come to this place. I know

  226. that I was speaking as one who had no

  227. understanding. And so Job comes to this

  228. place of a certain type of repentance.

  229. In verse six, he says this, "Therefore I

  230. despise myself and repent in dust and

  231. ashes."

  232. I despise myself and repent in dust and

  233. ashes. And now the question has come on

  234. this verse and I want you to stay with

  235. me because I want us to look at the

  236. words in this verse because sometimes

  237. there is a debate on the words in this

  238. verse and the specific debate is of

  239. repentance.

  240. Is it true to say that Job has truly

  241. repented?

  242. Because repentance means that you're

  243. turning from your sin and you're turning

  244. to God.

  245. And yet people question whether Job

  246. had this type of sin in his life that he

  247. needed to repent. Did Job need to repent

  248. in that way?

  249. The reason people ask this question as

  250. to whether Job needed to repent in this

  251. way is because of this. Three times in

  252. the book of Job, the point is made that

  253. Job is blameless.

  254. In chapter 1 verse one, in chapter 1

  255. verse 8, and in chapter 2 verse three,

  256. it says this of Job that he was a

  257. blameless and upright man who fears God

  258. and turns away from evil. No, he was not

  259. perfect, but he was blameless. So,

  260. continually in the book, he's counted as

  261. blameless, not like the friends.

  262. And then later in the verses that we

  263. will read later, you can see something

  264. of Job when it talks about Job's speech

  265. in verse 7, look at verse 7, the Lord

  266. says this. After the Lord had spoken

  267. these words to Job, the Lord said to

  268. Elephaz, the Timite, one of Job's

  269. friends, "My anger burns against you and

  270. against your two friends, for you have

  271. not spoken of me what is right, as my

  272. servant Job has.

  273. And then later at the second half of

  274. verse 8, he says, "For you have not

  275. spoken of me what is right as my servant

  276. Job has."

  277. So here's what we know about Job. Job is

  278. blameless and Job is upright. And and

  279. the Lord's conclusion about what Job has

  280. said is this is that he has spoken what

  281. is right.

  282. So, is Job repenting here? Well, you'll

  283. notice, stick with me as we look at this

  284. ver word, you'll notice in your Bibles,

  285. if it has the word repent, you'll have a

  286. little number beside that. And that

  287. number is a footnote to another word

  288. that it could be translated.

  289. It says, "Or and am." So, it would read

  290. like this. Therefore, I despise myself

  291. and I am comforted in dust and ashes.

  292. It's hard to read it that way with that

  293. translation,

  294. but I think it's this.

  295. I think Job is not so much in this

  296. moment repenting of his grievous sin. I

  297. think in this moment, what Job is doing

  298. is he's saying sorry for his grievous

  299. ignorance.

  300. He's saying sorry for what he did not

  301. know. He's saying sorry that he actually

  302. forgot what he should have known.

  303. Here's why I say that. There's another

  304. translation called the the CSB and I

  305. think it puts this verse quite well. Job

    Job 42:6

  306. 42:6. It says this. Therefore, I reject

  307. my words and I am sorry for them.

  308. I am dust and ashes.

  309. Job is coming to this place where the

  310. Lord asks him all these questions. The

  311. Lord isn't berating him. The Lord is

  312. wooing him into these answers

  313. and Job has come to the place where he's

  314. saying, "Lord,

  315. I'm sorry.

  316. I really didn't understand.

  317. Lord, I'm sorry. I forgot about who you

  318. were."

  319. That's what I think is happening here. I

  320. don't think it's the same type of

  321. repentance that the friends are called

  322. to. I think it's a a sorrow.

  323. Lord, I forgot.

  324. I do love you.

  325. I do fear you.

  326. Just in my suffering, I forgot about

  327. you. And Lord, I'm sorry for that.

  328. I know that compared to you, I am but

  329. dust and ashes. And so is all creation.

  330. Has that ever happened to you in your

  331. suffering

  332. when you've been hit with the things of

  333. life? Has that ever happened to you

  334. where you forgot about who God is?

  335. Have you forgotten this morning

  336. that he is the heavenly father?

  337. No matter what you're going through,

  338. he cares about you.

  339. Have you forgotten his loving care?

  340. He cares deeply about what's going on in

  341. your life. He cares about all of your

  342. concerns.

  343. You can talk to him and he will listen

  344. to you.

  345. He is a loving father. Have you

  346. forgotten like Job forgot that God the

  347. Father, he hears you.

  348. He hears every single groan.

  349. He hears every single word. He hears

  350. every single prayer.

  351. Better than any best friend you've ever

  352. had.

  353. He hears you. And Job has forgotten

  354. about that. Why?

  355. Because he didn't hear from God for 38

  356. chapters.

  357. God was silent in his life. And he was

  358. wondering, "God, where are you? I need

  359. you.

  360. speak to me

  361. this morning

  362. if you're listening.

  363. God is speaking to you

  364. and he's saying to you, "I'm your loving

  365. father and I care deeply about you and I

  366. have a plan and purpose for your life.

  367. Come to me,

  368. say sorry, and let's get on with it. let

  369. me lead you in life to live for me.

  370. That's Job's repentance and that's the

  371. type of repentance we might need to have

  372. this morning. But that type of

  373. repentance, I think, is different from

  374. the rep friends repentance that they're

  375. called to. Listen to the friend's

  376. repentance. Verse 7. After the Lord had

  377. spoken these words to Job, the Lord said

  378. to Elephaz, the Temite, "My anger

  379. burns against you and against your two

  380. friends, for you have not spoken of me

  381. what is right as my servant Job has."

  382. Now therefore, take seven bulls and

  383. seven rams, and go to my servant Job,

  384. and offer up a burnt offering for

  385. yourselves, and my servant Job shall

  386. pray for you. And I will accept his

  387. prayer, not to deal with you according

  388. to your folly, for you have not spoken

  389. of me what is right, as my servant Job

  390. has." So Elefaz the Timnite and Bildad

  391. the Shouite and Zofar the Neamothite

  392. went and did what the Lord had told

  393. them. And the Lord accepted

  394. Job's prayer.

  395. Why is their repentance different than

  396. Job's?

  397. Well, they have to offer a sacrifice,

  398. don't they? Job was never called to

  399. offer a sacrifice, but they were because

  400. they were in grievous sin.

  401. And because of their grievous sin, it

  402. says this in the verse, verse 7, "My

  403. anger burns against you."

  404. What does it mean that the Lord has

  405. anger?

  406. If you don't believe that the Lord

  407. Yahweh, the King of the universe, has

  408. anger, then you don't truly understand

  409. who this Lord is. Isn't he a God of

  410. love? Yes, of course, he is a God of

  411. love, but he is also a God of justice.

  412. The great verse of love that we say is

  413. this. For God so loved the world that he

  414. gave his only son. And that is so true.

  415. God is a God of love. For God so loved

  416. the world. And you need to remember

  417. that. But how did he love the world? For

  418. God so loved the world that he gave

  419. his one and only son that whoever

  420. believes in him shall not perish but

  421. have eternal life. You have in that

  422. verse love and you have in that verse

  423. justice

  424. that God will not let sin go unpunished.

  425. that either your sin is crucified with

  426. Jesus on the cross

  427. or your sin will be punished with you in

  428. hell for eternity.

  429. And the question is, how do you want

  430. your sin to be dealt with?

  431. Because those who believe and trust in

  432. Jesus

  433. shall not perish, Jesus says, but they

  434. shall have eternal life.

  435. God when he is angry, when it says in

  436. the scripture that God has anger, it is

  437. always righteous, holy, perfect and just

  438. anger. And this is what we want from a

  439. just judge. You want the murderer, You

  440. want Oh, sorry. You want the murderer

  441. punished, don't you? In judgment.

  442. You want the murderer to be convicted of

  443. their murder. You want them to be

  444. punished in prison. You want them to be

  445. punished in trial. You want justice. And

  446. it is right for God to be a God of

  447. justice. It is right for him to bring

  448. about justice. You do not want a God who

  449. does not bring about justice. Just like

  450. you do not want a judge who does not

  451. bring about justice.

  452. And so it is with God in this moment. He

  453. is angry here in this moment at the two

  454. friends.

  455. And you see who his anger is against.

  456. His anger does not burn against Job.

  457. So that tells us something about the

  458. Lord's questioning of Job. The the

  459. Lord's questioning of Job, he isn't

  460. berating Job. He's wooing Job back to

  461. himself in the questions. So his anger

  462. doesn't burn against Job. His anger is

  463. not burning against Eliu. That's why

  464. some people think all Eliu's words were

  465. perfect because the Lord doesn't anger

  466. doesn't burn against him.

  467. But the Lord also doesn't praise him. So

  468. we just judge Eli who on the basis of

  469. his words.

  470. Who does his anger come against? His

  471. anger comes against Job's friends. Those

  472. three friends who are speaking against

  473. Job. And what was his anger towards

  474. them? It was because of their speech. He

  475. burned with anger at the friends because

  476. of the words that they spoke.

  477. The words that they spoke were

  478. important. God cares about the words

  479. that people speak. And if people speak

  480. wrong words, God can burn with anger at

  481. those words in righteous and holy

  482. judgment and justice.

  483. So that's his anger. That's who he's

  484. angry at. That's what he's angry at.

  485. Their speech. And what is the solution

  486. that he provides?

  487. He's angry at their speech. But what is

  488. the solution that he provides? The

  489. solution that he provides for them is

  490. this. The perfect sacrifice in verse 8.

  491. Now therefore, take seven bulls and

  492. seven rams, and go to my servant Job,

  493. and offer up a burnt offering for

  494. yourselves.

  495. Take seven bulls and seven rams, the

  496. perfect offering, the costly offering,

  497. and go to Job, who's now acting like a

  498. perfect priest,

  499. and have Job, the perfect priest, offer

  500. this perfect offering for the

  501. forgiveness of your heenous sins.

  502. This is what you are called to do.

  503. And so as we look at the sins of these

  504. friends,

  505. we should be reminded

  506. of how God responds to our sin.

  507. Firstly, you need to know this. The Lord

  508. hates your sin.

  509. You might be happy with your sin. You

  510. might be comfortable with your sin. You

  511. might be hiding your sin. You might be

  512. laughing in what you think is freedom,

  513. but the Lord, he hates your sin, and he

  514. burns with anger against your sin.

  515. What type of sin does he hate? Is it the

  516. sin that I think are the grievous sins?

  517. Well, what sin does he burn with in

  518. anger here?

  519. He burns in anger with the sin of their

  520. speech.

  521. He hates

  522. our sinful speech.

  523. He hates it. And what we need to do is

  524. we need to be careful in our speech.

  525. This is a book of conversations.

  526. And all it was, you would think, is just

  527. conversations between Job and his

  528. friends. And sometimes we think in our

  529. conversation with our friends that we

  530. just get a free pass.

  531. That I love it when I talk with my

  532. friends because I can just talk with my

  533. friends about anything. Oh, I love it

  534. when I can talk with them. They don't

  535. just judge me. I can just say whatever I

  536. like and there's no filter and I can

  537. just let it all out there because

  538. they're my close friend and I can just

  539. be open and honest. But when you are

  540. speaking those words with your friend,

  541. you are speaking them in front of God

  542. Almighty.

  543. And he cares about your words.

  544. So we're called as God's people to be

  545. careful and wise in how we speak.

  546. But

  547. we must understand this.

  548. There is hope

  549. for those of us who speak in this way.

  550. Because as I was reading this verse this

  551. week, I was putting up my hand. I don't

  552. know about you, but I was putting up my

  553. hand. I could think about the words and

  554. the conversations I had this week where

  555. I didn't honor him.

  556. And the Lord is saying, I'm angry at

  557. that.

  558. And then the Lord says,

  559. "Come to me. Repent."

  560. Jesus says, "Because I am not only the

  561. perfect priest,

  562. but I am also the perfect sacrifice

  563. who has come for the forgiveness of your

  564. sins, including every single word you

  565. have ever spoken that is wrong." Imagine

  566. that.

  567. Every single word that you have ever

  568. spoken that is wrong, if you come to

  569. Jesus today and repent of those words,

  570. guess what happens to every single one

  571. of those words? Every single one of

  572. those words is what? Nailed to the

  573. cross.

  574. And it does not come upon you as

  575. punishment. It comes upon Christ.

  576. Christ became the guilty one so that you

  577. might walk free.

  578. And yet the scripture tells us that not

  579. a word of sin was uttered from his

  580. mouth. He was perfect in speech and he

  581. set us who are terrible in speech free.

  582. That is our Jesus. And that is the type

  583. of repentance we should have this

  584. morning. And after Job's repentance and

  585. after the friend's repentance, do you

  586. know what happens? Restoration.

  587. Not only restoration for the friends and

  588. the restoration of their relationship

  589. together and the restoration of the

  590. friends relationship with God. Because

  591. the Lord accepted verse 9, the Lord

  592. accepted Job's prayer.

  593. There's restoration now between Job and

  594. his friends. And there's restoration

  595. between Job's friends and God. There's

  596. glorious restoration.

  597. And then God brings about restoration in

  598. Job's life.

  599. Look at verse 10.

  600. And the Lord restored the fortunes of

  601. Job. when he had prayed for his friends.

  602. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as

  603. he had before. Then came to him all his

  604. brothers and sisters and all who had

  605. known him before and ate bread with him

  606. in his house. And they showed him

  607. sympathy and comforted him for all the

  608. evil that the Lord had brought upon him.

  609. And each of them gave him a piece of

  610. money and a ring of gold. And the Lord

  611. blessed the latter days of Job more than

  612. the beginning. And he had 4,000 sheep

  613. and 6,000 camel and 1,000 yolk of oxmen

  614. and 1,000 female donkeys. And he had

  615. seven sons and three daughters. And he

  616. called the name of his first daughter,

  617. Gemma,

  618. and the name of his second, Kaziah, and

  619. the name of his third, Karen Hapuk.

  620. And in all the land there were no women

  621. so beautiful as Job's daughters.

  622. And their father gave them an

  623. inheritance among their brothers.

  624. And after this Job lived 140 years and

  625. saw his sons and his sons sons four

  626. generations. And Job died an old man and

  627. full of years.

  628. What has the Lord restored in Job's

  629. life?

  630. It tells us in verse 10, "And the Lord

  631. restored the fortunes of Job." So what

  632. has the Lord restored for him? Well, the

  633. Lord has restored to him his extended

  634. family in verse 11. Then came to him all

  635. his brothers and sisters. He's restored

  636. to his family. The family who despised

  637. him, the family who wanted to zone him,

  638. the family who wanted to stay away from

  639. him, Job is now restored to his family.

  640. What else is restored to Job? Well, what

  641. is restored to Job is his wealth.

  642. Verse 12, and the Lord blessed him in

  643. the latter days, and then he is 4,000

  644. sheep instead of 7,000 that he had in

  645. chapter 1. He is 6,000 camel instead of

  646. 3,000 that he had in chapter 1. He is

  647. 1,000 yolk oxen instead of 500 that he

  648. had in chapter 1. And he is 1,000 female

  649. donkeys instead of 500 that he had in

  650. chapter 1.

  651. He is double the blessing that he had

  652. before. He's restored all his wealth and

  653. then he has restored all his family. He

  654. has seven sons, the perfect amount of

  655. sons, and three daughters, which is the

  656. perfect family. There's a reason why the

  657. ten commandments are 10 because it is so

  658. very perfect. And here he has seven

  659. sons, the perfect amount of sons and

  660. three daughters. Again, the perfect 10

  661. family.

  662. How many sons and daughters did he have

  663. before? Seven sons, three daughters

  664. fully restored.

  665. So his extended family is restored, his

  666. wealth is restored, his immediate family

  667. is restored. It seems by implication

  668. probably his marriage is restored.

  669. Doesn't say another woman. Doesn't speak

  670. of her at all. But I guess the one who

  671. said curse God and die might be back on

  672. the scene.

  673. So it's a restored marriage.

  674. Finally, it's a restored health. Nobody

  675. who saw Job on the ash heap thought,

  676. "Yeah, I think this guy is going to last

  677. 140 years." You know those people you

  678. just think any day now. I mean, it's

  679. kind of looking like any day it might

  680. happen.

  681. That's what they were looking at Job.

  682. Any day now.

  683. 140 years.

  684. The average might have been accepted 70.

  685. He gets double that.

  686. Job is restored.

  687. So, what's the message of Job?

  688. Suffer for a while.

  689. Suffer. Grin and bear it and in the end

  690. you're going to get blessing on this

  691. earth. Get twofold blessing

  692. soon. Just grin and bear the suffering

  693. and you will have 14,000 donkeys,

  694. 6,000 camel mansions and the Ferrari and

  695. all that. Just grin and bear your

  696. suffering and God will bless you. Some

  697. people take this passage and say exactly

  698. that.

  699. I don't think it's quite like that. We

  700. laugh because we know the world just

  701. doesn't work like that.

  702. So, what do we need to remember in Job's

  703. restoration here?

  704. First, I think we need to remember that

  705. this restoration of Job

  706. is not your restoration.

  707. Just because Job has been restored in

  708. this way, it's not promising that you

  709. will be restored in this way. This is an

  710. historical account of what happened to

  711. Job. It's not a promise of what will

  712. happen to everybody.

  713. Yes, the Lord decided in his providence

  714. and goodness, the Lord decided to

  715. restore to things some of these things

  716. to Job and his life, but that's not

  717. promised for all of us.

  718. Sometimes life will just be suffering

  719. right until the end. Just like our

  720. savior

  721. suffering right until the end.

  722. We're never promised this kind of

  723. suffering. So Job's suffering we need to

  724. remember is not promised to be your

  725. suffering. And Job's restoration is not

  726. promised to be your restoration. But

  727. also the next thing I want us to

  728. remember about this restoration here is

  729. that this restoration, it's not perfect

  730. restoration.

  731. You look at these verses and you think

  732. that kind of looks like perfect. He he

  733. had half those animals and now he has

  734. double. It kind of looks all perfect.

  735. But you forget in this restoration it's

  736. not perfect. Yes, he was given seven new

  737. sons and three new daughters,

  738. but he wasn't given back his seven old

  739. sons or his three old daughters.

  740. Their gravestones would have still been

  741. in the ground.

  742. If they had graves like that, he would

  743. have probably still visited them every

  744. year. He would have still mourned for

  745. their loss. It doesn't mean that that

  746. everything was restored back to him. No,

  747. the reality of death was still there for

  748. Job.

  749. The restoration wasn't perfect. And we

  750. know the reality of death was still

  751. there for Job. Why? Because how does the

  752. book end?

  753. And he died.

  754. Very end, last verse.

  755. He still suffered like all of us will

  756. one day. and he died.

  757. His sons would have mourned for him. His

  758. daughters would have mourned for him

  759. and he died.

  760. And as you think about that kind of

  761. ending to the book of Job,

  762. it makes you want to think,

  763. surely there's a better ending than

  764. this.

  765. and he died.

  766. There is

  767. the better ending is this. And he died

  768. and on the third day he rose again.

  769. Which gives us the promise that there is

  770. something better that is to come.

  771. There is a place for those who truly

  772. repent today. There is a place where

  773. nobody ever dies again.

  774. What a glorious place that will be. No

  775. one dies.

  776. No funeral homes in heaven. No

  777. gravestones in heaven.

  778. The new heaven and the new earth is the

  779. better day.

  780. That's the day of our hope. That is the

  781. day of true restoration.

  782. That is the day that you should long

  783. for.

  784. So no, you're not promised restoration

  785. in this world, but you are promised

  786. restoration in the world that is to

  787. come.

  788. We want a better story than and he died.

  789. And the better story will be this.

  790. And they lived happily ever after with

  791. their savior.

  792. That's going to be your story if you

  793. trust in Jesus. Let's pray.

  794. Lord, we thank you for the wonderful

  795. news of the gospel that Lord Jesus, if

  796. we repent of our sin and put our faith

  797. and trust in you,

  798. we might be restored in our relationship

  799. with you, forgiven, washed as white as

  800. snow. Thank you, Father, for your deep

  801. love for us.

  802. Thank you Lord

  803. that our story does not end at death

  804. but Lord we reign with you in eternity

  805. and that is our hope through all the

  806. suffering through all the trial we will

  807. say with Job the Lord gives and the Lord

  808. takes away blessed be the name of the

  809. Lord. Amen. Let's stand and sing to the

  810. Lord our father in response.
